Parasol New Arrivals • August 10, 2008

Well folks,

What’s this? An update on Sunday? Have you completely lost it, bros? Of course we haven’t lost it. You see, every once in a while even we Parasolians need to take a week off to get our hair done, our nails did and to just take it easy and relax in the sun. So that’s what Ol’ Roy is doing. In return you get to peruse the new goodies a couple of days ahead of schedule. Fret not because everything will be back to normal, sort of, because upon my return Paul will be embarking on a spiritual sojourn of sorts. Again, rest assured, you’ll still be in good hands at all times.

All right. Enough chatter and now on to the newly unleashed releases. That’s right folks, we’ve done let the dogs out of the kennel early this week.

Oh, to be home again,

Roy & Paul

Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

Crystal Antlers "EP" CD5 $5.50 (self-released)
Highly recommended debut EP from much-drooled-over San Fran freak-prog-garage-rock tribalists. Echoing, orgasmic soul-psych epiphanies exploding in "an expansive soundworld", favoring acid-fried melodies over outright noise-for-noise-sake. A joyous, evangelical, space-rock bong-dream slathered across six stupendous tracks. A majorly righteous kicking-out-of-the-jams going on here, think Stooges, Union Carbide Productions, Les Savy Fav, Comets On Fire, Wooden Shjips and A Place To Bury Strangers. And, this is what it's come to: the hyphen key just melted_down, again.

Bongripper "Hate Ashbury" Cassette $4.50 (Scab On My Brain)
Chicago's BONGRIPPER offers their newest cut 'HATE ASHBURY'; right here in tape form. 60 minutes of instrumental, experimental doom metal. Heavy like a downpour of cinderblocks. With experimental parts that keep it interesting. Rip your bong or don't; but play this tape loud for the full experience! Hand numbered to 100 copies. (Scab On My Brain)

Parasol Label Group News
NEWS: We expect the new Tractor Kings album, Homesick, to finally arrive at Parasol HQ this month and look for early 2009 releases (that we'll probably give you a head start on later this year) from Unbunny (an amazing singles/rarities collection), Mazes (The 1900s’ Ed Anderson solo), Richard Lloyd (fingers crossed) and The Green Pajamas.

VENUES: Chicago psych-pop troupe The 1900s have been invited to Vancouver by none other than The New Pornographers for the two-day Stanley Park Singing Exhibition featuring The NP, Neko Case, Black Mountain, Andrew Bird, Destroyer, Deerhoof, Stevie Jackson and more. The 1900s play Sunday, September 1st, the fest continues through Monday (Labour Day). Beforehand they’ll play at The Lucky Bar’s Rifflandia Fest in Victoria BC on Saturday, August 31st and afterwards they’ll head south to Portland OR for a show at Berbeti’s on Tuesday, September 3rd. More dates there and back likely, maybe? Meanwhile, ex-Television guitarist Richard Lloyd, wraps up his Summer Tour 2008 with his band The Sufimonkey Trio, playing the Pour House Music Hall in Raleigh NC Monday 8/11, Gravity Lounge in Charlottesville VA Tuesday 8/12, Poe’s Pub in Richmond VA 8/13 and The Velvet Lounge in our nation’s capitol Thursday 8/14.

13th Floor Elevators
Going Up: The Very Best Of The 13th Floor Elevators
PS, UK 2004 release, single CD best-of collection. "The 20 greatest mind-blowing highlights recorded for the International Artists label between 1966 and 1969 by the pioneering psychedelic rock group. Featuring the groundbreaking single, 'You're Gonna Miss Me,' other classics such as 'Fire Engine,' 'Slip Inside This House' and 'May The Circle Remain Unbroken,' plus the recently discovered nugget 'I Don't Ever Want To Come Down' and a manic version of Van Morrison's garage classic, 'Gloria.' Fronted by the truly eccentric and iconic Roky Erickson, The 13th Floor Elevators produced some of the most inventive and memorable music of the era. Their often-menacing drug-fuelled songs with a potent combination of R&B, folk-rock and Kinks/Stones punk and stoned lyrics based on a nihilistic hippy philosophy have brought them cult status ever since."

Action Biker
Hesperian Puisto
PS, SWEDEN It really is time for Action Biker's first solo album! It has now been six years since she emerged as an artist doing fun and popular live shows and releasing CD-R's in the indie pop scene of Gothenburg, Sweden, which included people like Jens Lekman and The Honeydrips. Since then, Sarah Nyberg Pergament has been involved in other projects, such as Flow Flux Clan, Kissing Mirrors and The Dreamers, whose record "Day For Night" has received great acclaim from different places around the world. Over the years, Sarah has also performed lots of Action Biker shows (some, as an opening act for Le Tigre and The Embassy), contributed to recordings with Lars Blek (The Field), Differnet and The Honeydrips, and all this time, new recordings with Action Biker have popped up on compilations and singles. In brief, when "Hesperian Puisto" finally is released, it means the début of someone with a lot of experienceŠ The record is named after the Hesperian park in Helsinki, Finland, where Sarah lived for a while. She describes her music as baroque on synthesizers. It is pop music built on complex naivety - altogether very accessible music with distinct vocals and a crispy, sweet, analogue sound. Two great-looking videos are also included on the CD. References and Influences: Young Marble Giants, Broadcast, Dislocation Dance, Moondog, Virna Lindt, BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Antena, Francoise Hardy, Saint Etienne, Brian Eno, Ghost Box, Stereolab, Fred Astaire, Maurice Ravel, ESG, Komeda, Cluster, Flying Lizards, Syd Barrett, The Passions, St Christopher, John Barry, Can, Human League, Colleen, Marine Girls, Eric Dolphy, Telex, George Delerue, The Wake, Kraftwerk, Lori & The Chameleons, Differnet.

All That The Name Implies
S-T
PS, US This mellow collection of communal U.S. hippie folk was recorded in 1968 and went undiscovered for decades. Featuring male and female vocals, strummed 6 and 12-string acoustic guitars, congas, flute and tambourine, it's a lost gem that's bound to appeal to fans of stoned rural psychedelia. The songs range from touching ballads to whimsical ditties and a highly unusual medley in tribute to folk giant Fred Neil. It makes its CD debut here, and comes complete with all four sides of their equally-rare and obscure 45s.

Alla
Es Tiempo
PS, US Pronounced ay-ya, this Chicago-based Mexican-American three-piece are laying the blueprint for a new brand of Latin psychedelic pop. As vocal melodies chime, discreet electronic effects swirl around the mix & strings arc across the skyline at the subtlest of angles. The group has forged a distinctive sound encompassing some of their favorite styles from the last four decades: German Krautrock experiments, Motown flourishes, Brazilian Tropicalia, cosmic jazz & symphonic 60's pop of Brian Wilson & Phil Spector- all while paying homage to their Mexican musical heritage.

Ambarchi, Oren
A Final Kiss on Poisoned Cheeks
PS, US There is a vivid breadth to the guitar deconstructions of Australian OREN AMBARCHI. Sometimes his work takes a delicate lilt; it can also dive into dark and deep pools of sound when he joins cowl-core ensembles Sunn O))) (with Stephen O'Malley) and Burial Chamber Trio (with Greg Anderson). Whether with those bands, solo, or in collaboration with luminaries ranging from Mike Patton and John Zorn to Christian Fennesz, he consistently reroutes his instrument into zones of arch, alien abstraction. "A Final Kiss on Poisoned Cheeks" offers a dizzying gaze straight into a chasm of extreme frequencies - paint-peelingly high and bowel-churningly low - all set atop a sub-strata of menace, angst, and contemplative beauty.

Feat members of THE CUTS, PARCHMAN FARM, GHENGHIS TRON & others, this is simply a band of 4 dudes. Athletic Automaton/Made In Mexico
Split
PS, US This split is the audio debut of ATHLETIC AUTOMATON and MADE IN MEXICO. This pressing sports a fashionable cover designed by none other than MATT BRINKAMAN. The songs? ATHLETIC AUTOMATON delivers "Death On An Escalator" (with guest vocals by J RYAN of SIX FINGER SATELLITE) and "Sweatpants No Underwear," while MADE IN MEXICO contribute the debut recordings of "Infrared Eye," "Wounded Knees" & "International Zombie." Athletic Automaton features STEPHEN MATTOS (ex-ARAB ON RADAR) and provide two tracks of droning, distortion-sopped lapsteel guitar set to a repetitive battery of seasick lurching rhythms. Made in Mexico features JEFF SCHNEIDER (ex-Arab On Radar). Made in Mexico provides the listener with scratchy riffs accompanied by REBECCA MITCHELL's dispatch-from-the-edge shrieks. Meanwhile the percussion and bass remain loose and limber enough to tackle the arrangements dynamics with no wave jazz-like focus.

Aughra
Proof of Dark Matter | Light the Lights
PS, US Instrumental in nature, the album succinctly captures the duality Eyestone's solo work has steadily become known for:
equal parts of both eerie, creeping horror-movie-inspired isolationist chillers & soaring, feel-good, dynamic melody. The end result is an engrossing foray into a world of instant nostalgia, haunting introspection, & intangible inspiration from shadowy sources.

Baker, Aidan
Green & Cold
PS, US Green & Cold is the strength of strings proved by AIDAN BAKER (NADJA). Yes, when gazed upon, these patent leather shoes really do reflect up. However, G&C accomplishes much more than throwing loveless lights back up to heaven. Baker's six strings ring out like Echoes in a Shallow Bay in the year 4 A.D., but vox and drone are couched in subtly weird production. Baker's voice is calmly pleasing, and like Vini Reilly or Henry Frayne (Lanterna), his vocals often seem more like another frequency/rhythm than specific words. Edition of 300 numbered copies.

Bellafea
Cavalcade
PS, US BELLAFEA call Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The rich, independent music history and their subsequent Southern upbringing play obvious roles in structuring their individuality. Bellafea teems with the punk spirit of local townies Superchunk, while the trialing dissonance of Polvo shine through in their string parts. There is an earnest aggression in their music, perhaps channeled from their struggles with the vastly conservative Southeastern United States-the patriarchal, Bible-belt countryside where they grew up. There is resistance, and there is also a secular nod to their heritage and its inevitable and inspiring impact on their songwriting.

Belong
Same Places (Slow Version)
PS, US With "Same Places (Slow Version)," BELONG evinces a slow-motion transformation - plate tectonics, wired for sound. Aural mountains melt into seas; yet icy barrens yield to breathing jungles of detail. The single, sprawling track may evoke decay, dissolution and destruction, but underfoot are tendrils of inexplicable joy. Belong sings a lullaby of obliteration, and the paradox it embodies would make both Kevin Shields and Tony Conrad proud: crushing melancholia and shuddering euphoria, inexorably intertwined.

Bitcrush
Shimmer and Fade
PS, US Originally released in 2005, 'Shimmer and Fade' was a limited time download EP from n5MD's sub-label En:peg Digital. Within its forty-eight minutes, bass and guitar arose from the background to a place of prominence and carried the EP's melodic content. This change in form represented an important period in the natural evolution of the Bitcrush sound, a time that found Mike Cadoo transitioning from his post-industrial and IDM beginnings found on Enarc to the more ambient/post-shoegaze direction of 'In Distance.' After years of requests to bring Shimmer and Fade back, n5MD has chosen to re-release it as a re-mastered CD which contains four extra tracks not found on the original EP. Limited to 1000, this release will serve as a time capsule of what was yet to come.

Bruni, Carla
Comme Si de Rien N'Etait
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The title of Carla Bruni's 2008 album, Comme Si de Rien N'Etait (As If Nothing Had Happened), is a good joke. After all, since her last album Bruni fell into a whirlwind romance with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and ended up marrying him and becoming the "First Lady" of France. That's a pretty big "something," and indeed it isn't often that the romance of a singer and a president is chronicled on record as it is here -- though you need to be fluent in French to catch the details, since only her cover of '50s pop classic "You Belong to Me" (which is a witty nod to a semi-scandalous trip the couple took to Egypt and other exotic locales before they were wed) is in English. You don't need to know exactly what's going on lyrically, because the intimate-sounding arrangements on the ballads and the light and breezy sound of the more uptempo tunes clue you in that there is romance in the air. Along with the nice arrangements, the best thing about the album is Bruni's intimate and sultry singing. She can purr like a Gainsbourg girl, strut sassily, or croon quite tenderly -- sometimes all within the same song. Most of the time she sounds like you always hoped a '60s French bombshell would sound but never quite did (think Bardot or Birkin). Not surprisingly, Bruni appears totally in control throughout the album, which could be down to her having written almost all of the songs herself, or could be down to her new position in the world. Whatever the reason, it makes for quite an improvement over her previous album, No Promises, and fulfills the promise of her charming debut, Quelqu'un M'a Dit. It is probably the best album released by a "First Lady," but beyond that, it's a pleasant, sometimes compelling album by a singer/songwriter with some stories to tell and a lovely way of telling them."

Byrds
The Notorious Byrd Brothers
PS, US Re-issue with 6 bonus tracks. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The recording sessions for the Byrds' fifth album, The Notorious Byrd Brothers, were conducted in the midst of internal turmoil that found them reduced to a duo by the time the record was completed. That wasn't evident from listening to the results, which showed the group continuing to expand the parameters of their eclecticism while retaining their hallmark guitar jangle and harmonies. With assistance from producer Gary Usher, they took more chances in the studio, enhancing the spacy quality of tracks like "Natural Harmony" and Goffin & King's "Wasn't Born to Follow" with electronic phasing. Washes of Moog synthesizer formed the eerie backdrop for "Space Odyssey," and the songs were craftily and unobtrusively linked with segues and fades. But the Byrds did not bury the essential strengths of their tunes in effects: "Goin' Back" (also written by Goffin & King) was a magnificent and melodic cover with the expected tasteful 12-string guitar runs that should have been a big hit. "Tribal Gathering" has some of the band's most effervescent harmonies; "Draft Morning" is a subtle and effective reflection of the horrors of the Vietnam War; and "Old John Robertson" looks forward to the country-rock that would soon dominate their repertoire. [The CD reissue adds six bonus tracks, including different versions of "Goin' Back" and "Draft Morning," a few instrumentals, and David Crosby's controversial "Triad"; unlisted on the sleeve is a rehearsal outtake which captures comically vitriolic arguments among the band.]" (Richie Unterberger)

Cristal
Re-Ups
PS, US JIMMY, ANTHONY, GREG DARDEN, and BOBBY DONNE (LABRADFORD, AIX EM KLEMM) play out infrequently , are unprolific in their release schedule and spend their time refining and recording their abstract electronic music. Their seclusion and deliberation produce remarkable results. Re-Ups is their second full length release. CRISTAL use computers to mutate and stretch sound spectra into long forms balanced against tenuous, implied melodies. The barely perceptible abuts the overwhelming. Placid soundfields are lacerated with incisions of digital fragments and static on the opening track. Sonic reductions boil and release evaporated melodies on the track "Xicifu," and then are decimated by the scouring noise of "Left of Swept." All across Re-Ups, disorienting and comforting elements sit side by side. When so many noise and experimental artists seem to be hemorrhaging releases, Cristal's compositional rigor is refreshing. One time pressing of 500 copies on 180-gram vinyl in gatefold jackets. Comes with digital download code.

Crystal Antlers
EP
PS, US Ballsout psych-rock-garage-soul from Long Beach long-hairs: rips, shreds, thrashes... Fans of Wooden Shjips' mind-numbing dayglo-ness and A Place To Bury Strangers' visceral intensity will find this majorly mandatory. PITCHFORK: "Merging psych, garage, lo-fi, prog, and countless other influences, the group easily maintains consistency despite a complete inability to be pinned to any specific movement or trend... It's tempting to be patient and call this disc a stopgap on the way to a triumphant debut full-length. But EP is plenty substantial as is; at 25 minutes, it's only a few shy of Nouns or, more to the point, any number of psych-rock classics from decades past."

PS, US Singer/songwriter, designer and actor David Wiley Rennick, best known for producing two internationally celebrated albums as part of Dappled Cities, has turned his hand to a blend of myth, music and storytelling with his least democratic work to date, The Curse of Company. THE MUSIC draws on Rennick's multi-platform artistic practices to convey story on a massive scale, mixing the psychedelic influence of The Velvet Underground with Neil Young's scalding alt-rock and folk, and drawing on classic, coming-of-age storytelling that recalls a dizzying mix of The Odyssey, Blade Runner, 2001 and Apocalypse Now.

The pounding rhythms get down into your bones, making it impossible to sit still. And those melodies...they stick with you for days. "Baby, you've got me talking words..." There's a new sheen at play here, courtesy of studio guru, Dave Cooley (Silversun Pickups, J Dilla), allowing the sunburnt harmonies to part through the sonic squall like an indie rock Moses. Disciplines, The
Smoking Kills (ON SALE)
PS, NORWAY PRE-ORDER @ $15.00, regular price $17.00. New band featuring KEN STRINGFELLOW. The Disciplines--a razor sharp, fuel efficient jet machine blending a full-on, rock blast worthy of AC/DC with anthemic melodies as sweet and singable as ABBA; a place where indie-level humility and charm meets a stadium-sized musical reach. Formed by American indie icon Ken Stringfellow (the Posies, R.E.M., Big Star, Lagwagon etc.) and the three instrument-wielding members of Norwegian chart successes Briskeby, the Disciplines have just released their first album, SMOKiNG KiLLS (Voices Music & Ent., Norway/Denmark). The album has already drawn rave reviews in the Norwegian national media; the singles "Best Mistake" and "Oslo" are bona fide chart hits; the band has been the subject of its own TV special and is on most of the major festivals in Norway this summer. The band was asked by Snow Patrol to support their London show last year; R.E.M. included the track "Yours for the Taking" on their Q magazine mix CD and has tagged the band to support their Scandinavian stadium shows in September. Coming up: a feature on Ken in Elle Scandinavia; festival and club dates in Netherlands, Spain and France; and a partnership with Chess Mobile that will put the band on screens large and small this summer (Chess will release a limited edition Disciplines phone that will come pre-loaded with the album and other features specific to the band). The band has played in Helsinki & Berlin and is looking at hitting both North and South America in the next year.

Dry Rib
Whose Last Trickle
PS, US DIY with a guitar-genius/nonsense poet only begins to explain DRY RIB and the projects that followed, but they were one of a tiny handful of DIY/post-punk-era groups who'd probably have sounded the same whether punk had happened or not. And things only got cooler, odder, and more idiosyncratic as ROB VASEY's audio insurgency progressed. Ed Ball of O Level (and later the Times and Teenage Film Stars) saw Dry Rib first in late 1978 and promptly signed them to his new Clockwork label. He writes, "Dry Rib were a late '70s three piece group of some indefinable power-not Powerful in the obvious sense, as in everyone slugging out the same riff... More the power of musical and lyrical imagination... Rob Vasey's guitar style of blurred chord stylings coupled with continuous tremolo arm pre-empted My Bloody Valentine (or anyone else) by the best part of a decade." Twenty songs packaged with photos, lyrics and extended notes.

Faint, The

PS, US Their 1st album in 4 years through their own, newly-formed label. In certain ways, the album is the most mechanical & precise of the band's work: the vocals sound less human than ever before; the bass lines are more mangled, keyboards spiral & squeal out of control; electronic pings & stabs invade the melodies; the lyrical anxiety & disdain of previous albums pervades almost every song.

Final Solution
Brotherman OST
PS, US He was a pusher that became a preacher. A gangster pimp serving soup from the trunk of his Coup Deville. A mutant cross between Robin Hood and Friar Tuck. Everyman, our man on the street, Brotherman. Continuing a tradition that began with Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, and culminated with Shaft and Superfly, Brotherman was a blaxploitation film set to hit screens in 1975. Prior to the script being finished, the producers commissioned an original soundtrack to be performed by THE FINAL SOLUTION, a fledgling vocal group from Chicago's west side. The ten-song album draws deeply from Curtis Mayfield's well, certainly, but the proof in the pudding is CARL WOLFOLK's unique guitar style-a combination of flamenco and funk-that stabs around the four part harmonies. In classic Numero fashion, before even one foot of film was shot, the plug was pulled and the movie was canceled. Dragged around for 30 years by songwriter and arranger Wolfolk, the tapes of his life's work have finally been mixed, and the soundtrack album has been augmented to include two orchestrated instrumentals intended for the film. Having no stills from the film to work with, the Numero Group tasked Minneapolis' Burlesque of North America to paint a cover that could withstand the scrutiny of any blaxploitation poster geek. The deluxe single disc set is housed in our standard slipcase, with a plush booklet detailing the known history of the film and the group that created the music.

Guerrero, Tommy
Return of the Bastard
PS, US A brand new album from professional skater, artist, musician, producer and businessman TOMMY GUERRERO (JET BLACK CRAYON). Tommy's music, like his graphic design, is beguilingly simple. He sounds like a guy fucking around on his front stoop-and maybe that's exactly accurate-but the results touch you down to your toes. His melodies dance lightly around your head while the rhythms build under your feet. His is soul music, made by a street kid raised on Santana and Bill Withers, with more than a little nod to The Clash and Public Enemy in there, too. Features guest appearances from CURUMIN (Quannum Records), FREDO ORTIZ (percussionist for the BEASTIE BOYS), and CHUCK TREECE (BLKTOP PROJECT, MCRAD, BAD BRAINS). Previous releases on Mo'Wax, Galaxia, Function 8, Rush [Japan] and Quannum. Human Eye
Fragments of the Universe Nurse
PS, US Watching HUMAN EYE onstage is like being attacked by space aliens. They are like something dreamed up by Philip K. Dick during an acid flashback, a science fiction sound world with rock and roll roots assaulting all of the senses. Their second full-length release, Fragments of the Universe Nurse, continues their musical mission with more mind-derailing time changes, laser-beam synthesizer blasts, hallucinatory overdriven echoplex, and a generally brutal assemblage of disparate elements from a sonic palette that ranges from mid-'70s punk rock to psychedelia, prog, free jazz, and Sci-Fi movie sound effects. Writhing giant robot snakes, huge illuminated plastic eyeballs, flying T.V. sets, and exploding flourescent paint-filled balloons only heighten the atmosphere of transformed reality and universal anxiety suggested by Human Eye's music. The musical structures whirl and explode in an entangled storm of opposites fusing together and colliding with strange precision. On first listen, you might think you're hearing traces of Beefheart, Germs, Chrome, Soupy Sales, the Residents, Hendrix, Gentle Giant, and the Boredoms. By the second or third listen, you'll (hopefully) be too disoriented to think, analyze, etc. Singer/guitarist TIMMY V. was previously in the CLONE DEFECTS."-Matthew Smith (Outrageous Cherry)

"Do you get nostalgic shivers down your spine when someone mentions the word punk? Are you a real geek when it comes to record collecting? Have you ever wondered what was out there -- deep in the underground of the Swedish punk scene? Then this book is for you! Find out everything you want to know about leading acts such as Ebba Grön, KSMB, Attentat, Anti Cimex, Mob 47, Asta Kask and Strebers. But also about every other band that ever released a record during the first ten years of punk music! In this book you will find all the facts: line-ups, home towns, biographies and complete, fully illustrated discographies with all sleeves depicted in full color. The discographies detail variations in vinyl pressings and covers, colored vinyl existence -- and just about everything else of interest for any serious collector of Swedish punk records. Finally, you get to see the full output from legendary bands such as Vicious Visions, Shas, Absurd, Kriminella Gitarrer, 57 KEZ, Kessler Jugend, Bad Boo Band and other similar acts. Over the years, early Swedish punk has obtained a cult reputation among music fans all over the world and some records will fetch ridiculously high prices at auctions. Those records were often pressed in a very small series by private labels. This book includes Premium Publishing's established price guide indication ratings, showing the current status among collectors for each and every entry! It has taken the author some ten years to collect the massive amount of information contained in this book. Premium Publishing is now very proud to present the definitive reference guide to all the recording acts during the first ten innovative years of the Swedish punk era!"

Kid Montana
Temperamental + Singles
PS, UK LTM is pleased to announce a double CD set from Kid Montana, the Belgian electronic pop duo who recorded a string of acclaimed releases for chic label Les Disques du Crépuscule between 1984 and 1987. Temperamental + Singles gathers together the Temperamental album from 1986 with six track mini-album The Las Vegas Gold Rush and singles such as Revisiting Yalta, Spooky, Love May Be Blind and Still Colour Waiting. Featured producers include Marc Moulin and dan Lacksman (of Telex) and Gilbert Lederman (Berntholer). Digitally remastered, the 31 track, 2 hour 2xCD compilation also includes all tracks from the rare debut ep Today from 1982, and three tracks from a final unreleased demo recorded in 1987. The CD also includes MPEG versions of the video clips for Still Color Waiting and Spooky, directed by Serge Bergli. Artist biography: Kid Montana was initially the nom de guerre of Jean-Marc Lederman, formerly keyboard player with Digital Dance and Fad Gadget. After an experimental debut EP on Sandwich Records in 1982, Lederman spent time in London playing with The The and Gene Loves Jezebel, before recruiting American-born singer Dudley Kludt for the second Kid Montana single, Revisiting Yalta, in 1984. The following year the duo signed with Les Disques du Crépuscule, releasing a run of sophisticated electro-pop records, although mainstream success eluded them. The duo split in 1987, Lederman afterwards recording several hard electronic albums with The Weathermen, and with Julianne Regan as Jules et Jim.

Lights Out Asia
Eyes Like Brontide
PS, US Once a band has developed a sound that is undeniably theirs it can be difficult to push beyond those confines and expand the sound into new territory. Lights Out Asia set out to do just that and have succeeded in writing a record that was as much a sign of the times as it was an expansion of their aural bubble that has been their watermark. They have been called ethereal, post-shoegaze and sleep-rock, but on their third full length "Eyes Like Brontide" the band slides into a darker more ominous and less lucid dream than on previous efforts. The release is a stylistic shift from the sweet lullabies of their debut "Garmonia" (Sun Sea Sky) and the electronic drum driven post-shoegaze of 2007's "Tanks and Recognizers" (n5MD). The song dynamics on the album deserve special attention. For the first time in Lights Out Asia's history they have gone for broke with some of the most epic drum machine driven post-rock this side of the Pacific along with solemn disconnected passages of dream nourished sonic. The occasional floating vocal and dusty winding guitar they are known for are still present, but "Eyes Like Brontide" brings a whole new dimension to the Lights Out Asia ethos. Most importantly, the band has expanded upon its sound without throwing away the original blueprint or alienating its fan base. "Eyes Like Brontide" is recommended for fans of Hammock, Bitcrush, Robin Guthrie and Manual.

Manhattan Love Suicides
Burnt Out Landscapes
PS, US "This Leeds foursome's fuzzed-out dream-pop recalls not only JAMC, but also the willowy female vocals of C86 alumni the Shop Assistants. However, rather than revive the sexualized gore of the 80s movie underground-- or the black-leather tropes of recent retro noise-poppers like the Raveonettes-- the Manhattan Love Suicides' elf-titled debut throbs with the giddy vulnerability of the scene that the NME's C86 compilation helped spawn." Pitchfork. The Manhattan Love Suicides have a mission. They want to write, record and release songs on their own accord. The DIY ethic is in their blood. The idea of getting their name out there by writing, recording, and releasing as many songs as you can as a way of promotion is old fashioned at best. This collection of songs is taken from the 4 singles they released over last year with additional unreleased songs as well as some live recordings. The Manhattan Love Suicides wear their influences on their sleeves and never has Phil Spector's Wall of Sound met so cohesively with Jesus and Mary Chain's. The hypnotic noise and feedback are highlighted with a pounding beat and heart breaking female vocals. Just when you are thinking the shoegaze drone will go on the hooks come in and you hear the girl group sounds to keep you from zoning out. For influences think Jesus and Mary Chain, Galaxie 500, The Velvet Underground, The Rosehips, The Golden Dawn, Meat Whiplash... that kind of stuff. Basically these are the bands that every hipster /record store clerk covets in their own collection. The Manhattan Love Suicides feature former members of the much buzzed about Leeds's band Pop Threat. A much talked and written about band that sparked Sonic Youth and Velvet Underground comparisons that released several singles, eps, and tracks that ended up on compilations. Who's songs played by John Peel landed them releases on Fierce Panda and Mook Records.

Music Go Music
Reach Out
PS, US Like a bolt from Zeus, MUSIC GO MUSIC have struck again with their new 12" single, 'Reach Out.' This outing finds them exploring a darker side of pop music; the place where Deep Purple's brute force meets the Carpenter's tragic wistfulness, where Blondie's power-hooks cross melodic swords with Meat Loaf's drama-rock theatrics. They've expanded their palette considerably, yet the sound is unmistakably theirs, and the magic of it points the way to the light at the end of the tunnel. 'Reach Out' is the monologue of a would-be savior, offering to lift us from the pit of despair. It treks from Logan's Run ambience to proto-metal riffing to disco-gallop to TV detective funk and back again.

Near The Parenthesis
L'Eixample
PS, US Near the Parenthesis follows up 2007's "Of Soft Construction" with "L'Eixample," Tim Arndt's most focused work to date. L'Eixample draws on inspiration gained during travels through Barcelona, Spain. Of particular interest was the innovative and sometimes peculiar modernist architecture of the L'Eixample district. In Catalunyan, L'Eixample literally means an extension, a strong symbolic parallel to the music found on Arndt's latest work which itself reflects an extension of the Near the Parenthesis' sound. While this collection begins where "Of Soft Construction" left off, it quickly migrates to an even calmer and more atmospheric experience. Through L'Eixample, Arndt has moved closer to an emotional apex and provides even greater melodic rewards.

Dig these primal studio demos of NY Dolls original classics like 'Looking For A Kiss' and 'Personality Crisis' and wild covers like Gary US Bonds' 'Seven Day Weekend' and Chuck Berry's 'Back In The USA,' all served up as only the Dolls ever could -- with enough raunchy romp and stomp to start a riot! These spring '73 sessions showcase the young band for the first time with drummer Jerry Nolan and feature the mauling antics of late, great guitar legend Johnny Thunders. Never issued until now and packaged with never seen photographs, boss notes, tons of class!"

Normanoak
Estra
PS, US NORMANOAK has another piece of vinyl to share with the world, a true follow up to last year's "A Double Gift of Tongues". This new album is called "Estra", named after a powerful horned goddess whom Normanoak has been busy invoking recently in small performance spaces around the country. Everything was recorded in his bedroom in Bloomington, Indiana, on three different tape machines. The music on "Estra" shows more variety than any of his previous efforts. Chugging rock songs burn up into soft, dark dirges that feature a uniquely made-up language code. Screaming minute-long hardcore songs fade into freaky, fucked instrumentals. There is even a song which curses the current state government, and their excessive logging of Normanoak's home forests of Southern Indiana. Throughout these 14 pieces, Normanoak takes on many personalities, such as his alter-ego Poisonoak. Over time the listener can begin to notice the shifts in perspective that the singer makes. Normanoak is more than just another musician. His work is pure sorcery at its most successful.

Noyes Brothers, The
Sheep From Goats
PS, UK The Boutique Label presents the first ever CD reissue of Sheep From Goats by The Noyes Brothers, originally released in 1980 on the highly collectible Object Music label. The Noyes Brothers were Steve Solamar of cult band Spherical Objects and Steve Miro, who also recorded as a solo artist for Object. The album (a double set) as recorded between October 1979 and May 1980 at Graveyard Studios, and contain 100 minutes of experiments and improvisations, ranging from Eno-esque electronics to improvisation and side-long excursions such as A Good Question and It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time. Released in July 1980 in a limited edition of 1000 copies, it sounds like little else recorded before or since. Pioneering Manchester label Object Music ceased operations in 1981, after Steve Solamar resolve a lifelong contradiction by becoming a woman. As part of this process Solamar even destroyed his own master tapes, and since then the Object catalogue has languished in undeserved obscurity (with the exception of The Passage). However an Object anthology has now been released as part of the Auteur Labels series on LTM, as well as the complete Spherical Objects back catalogue on CD. The artist formerly known as Steve Solamar is alive and well, and lives a happy spiritual and musical life. Steve Miro resides in Glastonbury.

Performing Ferrets
No One Told Us
PS, US Twenty-eight songs from one of DIY's iconic bands, including most of their astonishingly scarce LP, which music-historian/journalist/DIY enthusiast JOHAN KUGELBERG described as "the most seminal LP to come out of DIY... Fantastic over-enthusiastic juvenilia of an almost supernatural beauty." Whether or not the name was ironic, THE PERFORMING FERRETS were very much a performing band-whose songs clearly grew out of the way they interacted. A curious rhythm, an engaging riff, an arresting lyrical snippet, and frequently a Melodica tumble and writhe, ferret-like, into song / groove / experiments that stood unique on the UK indie post-punk scene. There's a touch of The Fall and the TV Personalities, a little garage and Beat, and a dry wit that had more to do with the Ferrets' favorite authors and comedians than anyone from the class of '77, but the Ferrets' response to D.I.Y. was all their own. Include's a 12-page booklet, along with photos, artifacts, and almost 80 minutes of the Ferrets' finest on the CD.

Prints
Just Thoughts
PS, US Quickly following their debut full-length, PRINTS return to stir the pot with a little more pop, their usual dose of psychedlia and an intoxicating amount of dance. Once again produced at home by multi-instrumentalists Zac Nelson and KENSETH THIBIDEAU, the songs here were originally conceived as b-sides for a proposed single for "Too Much Water" from the group's eponymous debut. By the time three new songs were completed, they stood too strong on their own to be pushed out as b-sides, so the decision was made to forfeit the single and instead offer the songs as a stand-alone EP. Meanwhile, DFA cofounder and Hercules and Love Affair producer Tim Goldsworthy fired up his new alter-ego Thee Loving Hand for an epic super-funk remix of a pair of Prints tracks, "Pretty Tick" and "Meditation" (featuring, among other things, the funk bass skills of !!!'s Tyler Pope). To top it off, acclaimed visual artist Toben Seymour directed an eye-popping video for "Too Much Water," which is included here on the Enhanced CD portion of the disc.

Qua
Silver Red
PS, AUSTRALIA "Silver Red" has been an evolving piece of music from Qua aka Cornel Wilzcek. Over the course of two years Silver Red began to take shape, with the piano and guitar source material originally recorded in 2005 at a live performance in Melbourne. This source material was loaded into an ever-growing custom software patch controlled by a French invention, the Lemur - a multi-touch, programmable screen - that eventually became the backbone of the composition. While it evokes ideas from Steve Reich, Philip Glass and other rhythmic minimalist composers, it also owes much to colorful explorations of artists such as Moondog and Roberto Cacciapaglia. In 2007, Laurence Pike, of Sydney bands Pivot (Warp Records) and Triosk (Leaf Records), took to the drums performing with Qua live and in the studio. As well as playing on Qua's upcoming pop album, Laurence played a one take drum part that was then loaded into the custom Qua software patch and re-performed by Cornel, thus lending it the same treatment as the other source material. "One Second" is a reaction to "Silver Red". It felt necessary to somehow resolve the album and boil it down to a few simple sounds. It looks at Silver Red from the view point of artists such as Ennio Morricone, Kristoff Komeda and Scott Walker and somehow extrudes one second of time from Silver Red.

Rosebud
Discoballs: A Disco Tribute To Pink Floyd [re-issue]
PS, US Back in 1979, way before the flood of tribute albums swamped your local record store's bins, this curiosity featuring disco versions of Pink Floyd songs came out on Warner Bros. Now, usually when you put the words 'disco' and 'tribute' together in the same phrase, the result is not going to be pretty. What does, however, make this album reissue-worthy is that two of the folks behind this, Claude Engel and Jannick Top, were members of the legendary French prog group Magma, and they were no doubt instrumental in the adventurous choice of tunes on this record. Sure, 'Money' and 'Have a Cigar', which was a minor hit, are not such a stretch, but disco versions of 'Interstellar Overdrive', 'Arnold Layne' and 'One of These Days'?! Not even Syd Barrett in his wildest dreams could have imagined such a thing! It's easily the most danceable Pink Floyd album ever!

Sanguine Piss
No Horse Shit (Cassette)
PS, US Saw these dudes for the first time as a cohesive unit at a recent wiese / wether gig in philadelphia. i've been seeing mat perform as newton for a minute, and known jared for what seems like a decade. in recent years i've been floored by some one-off collabs he has done with matt franco and skeleton warrior, so i was way interested in finding out what those two dudes plus cohort marc zajack (deep fried tapes) had in store. their setup was fairly minimum... some mixers, pedals, and a couple of guitars tuned to untuned. from second one though the most enormous sounds ruptured through the room. i mean, shit was gigantic. every once in a blue moon you could think to yourself "oh, i think that sound is coming from that", but usually it was just a vulgar mess. asked to do a tape while smoking weed out of an apple in the back of the store, even though i remember there being a pipe earlier. i guess that just fit. Scharber, Quinn & The...
Being Nice Won't Save Milwaukee
PS, US "Being Nice Won't Save Milwaukee isn't an album about saving Milwaukee, which is exactly why it will..." Straight from the mouth of Quinn Scharber, a take on what it's like to be in a band in a city that can either say 'yay' or 'nay' in a heartbeat. A very fickle nest in which to drop your album into if you're the sort of band who are frail of heart. Fortunately, this isn't the case for the members of Milwaukee's proprietors of a particularly engaging blend of garage, blues and power pop: strong hearts, worn on sleeves. The band's ideals and sound has influences wrought by Teenage Fanclub, Big Star, The Replacements, Wilco and even The Jesus and Mary Chain. Having honed their songwriting skills in Milwaukee bands such as The Nice Outfit, The Static Model and Menlo, The Quinn Scharber's have brought these experiences to the practice space and used them to form a solid set of songs. Stories about latest flames, drinking and giving life a fighting chance are all storied along by Scharber's young Paul Westerberg vocals.

Vandervelde, David
Waiting For The Sunrise
PS, US Just as there are albums that artists were born to make, there are albums that labels were born to release. "Waiting For The Sunrise" is one of those albums for both DAVID VANDERVELDE and SECRETLY CANADIAN. Upon first laying the needle down, the listener is greeted by a warm wash of sounds that seems to breeze in from decades back. Vandervelde's singular voice emerges from the drums and keys with "When the morning comes, I will be fine, I will be fine, I will be fine" and you're pretty damn sure he will be. The tones may be familiar, but his voice as an artist is his own, new and wholly contemporary, and you feel lucky to be here to watch the emergence. Critics marveled at Vandervelde's songwriting on his debut "Moonstation House Band", the mini-album which had the aesthetic wherewithal to hold its own side-for-side with the classics as a late night jam record. Spin magazine remarked that "at a pipsqueakish 22 years old, David Vandervelde is already generating the kind of indie-net whispering that musicians twice his age pine for." And on songs such as "California Breezes", "Someone Like You" and "Lyin' In Bed", it's clear that the material on this first long-player from Vandervelde is of a higher order - lyrically more personal and stripped down. "Waiting For The Sunrise" is the beautiful result of having extended himself both musically and emotionally.

Wether & A Snake In The Garden
Split (Cassette)
PS, US Head to head harshness from two solo east coasters. this split is kind of like a replay of a show in hartford, ct many moons ago. snake killed the dining room, then wether immediatly brawled the living quarters. if i could remember anything from that night, i would share it here, but it's all pretty much a brain musher. one burner a piece, both 10 minutes of steady pedal pummeling. three different covers.

Widow Babies
The Mike Watt EP
PS, US This 6-song, 13-minute concept album features a brilliantly conceived story that pits Minutemen bassist & erstwhile folk hero Mike Watt against a world domination-minded vampire who looks like Abraham Lincoln. The album features tightly focused songs that expand into Brazilian & West African rhythms while the raw energy hints at early influences of The Urinals, Die Monitr Batss, & yes, the Minutemen.

Wilson, Phil
Industrial Strength (2X7")
PS, US As main songwriter and singer of mid-'80s English pop legends the JUNE BRIDES, PHIL WILSON's influence looms large over nearly all UK guitar pop since. A bridge between early '80s groups like Josef K and the later Creation scene, Phil and the June Brides kept the flame burning for earnest, tuneful pop underpinned by fiercely strummed, jangly guitars. Though their career was a brief three years, their achievements are notable: all four of their singles and their sole LP topped the UK indie charts, they recorded several BBC sessions, including one for John Peel, and they toured with such heavyweights as The Smiths, Go-Betweens, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Mekons, Alternative TV, The Television Personalities and The Wedding Present. As a path to getting back into songwriting, Phil has decided to learn other people's songs, "pulling them apart, seeing how they worked and putting them back together in the wrong order." Industrial Strength is the first fruit of those experiments. Recording at home, totally solo, using acoustic guitars, mandolin and banjo, Phil has re-worked four songs from Throbbing Gristle, Kraftwerk, Faust and contemporary German band S/T. While guitar folk/pop and experimental rock might not seem like the most obvious combination, Phil has dug deep to expose the melodic roots of these songs. The layered acoustic instruments and skeletal programmed beats lay down a mesmerizing drone-folk groove, and the result is a wonderful, hypnotic record that reveals fresh nuances on each listen. It's a very auspicious new beginning for Mr. Wilson that points to more fascinating music yet to come.

PS, US Plainly stated, 31Knots hasn't moved in a new direction so much as they've ripened tofull maturity, evolved into the creature they're meant to be. Previous efforts are just astightly wrapped, just as fierce and incendiary. But something is different. Something here is new. It deserves to be called out as thought provoking and well written music in a time when substance is quickly giving way to music of commerce and palatability. There is no band like 31Knots and Worried Well finds them at the full height of their powers.

PS, AUSTRALIA Beautiful 2005 album from now defunct British troubadours. Mike now plays in LTI band Co-pilgrim. At just under 5 years since the inception of the band, Black Nielson has established an impressive reputation, both on record and as a live act. The modest level of success achieved by the band can be traced in a steady trajectory from noble beginnings on the south coast of England, formed by principle songwriter Michael Gale... And that trajectory shows no sign of abating.

Bound Stems
Family Afloat (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)
PS, US This expresses a crucial personal transition & a collective one. While BOUND STEMS quit their day-jobs to tour relentlessly throughout 2006 in support of their previous album (one that garnered praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, The New York Times, Alternative Press, URB & Chicago Tribune), the band returned home ready for new challenges, & made the communal decision to return to the more stable life of work weeks & strong roots. It was a choice that also ultimately made the concept of home central to this 2008 album. The songs sound like preparation: the family has grown now, to include new ones being formed in Chicago. But there's no settling down in these songs: family life is raw & confusing, as uncomfortable & unexpected & rewarding as crucial.

Clientele, The
That Night, A Forest Grew (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)
PS, SPAIN This is the third, and last, of a trilogy of E.P.s the Clientele have recorded for Acuarela. They have always used the Acuarela E.P.s as a way to stretch out between albums, to create a through-the-looking-glass version of the band that shadows the better-known history of their albums. 'Ariadne' experimented with drones and minimalism; 'The Lost Weekend' stretched the foggy sound of their debut to epic proportions. In contrast "That Night, a Forest Grew' is the most commercial and -shockingly- danceable thing they've ever recorded. Part Bacharach, part Television, part Orange Juice, the E.P. shares the pristine clarity, light and shade of 'God Save the Clientele', but adds a new element of summer pop perfection. This is The Clientele as a hazily remembered 1970s cartoon series, all distanced off-key colors; imaginary summer hits, radio waves beamed in from a dream-discotheque.

Girl Talk
Feed The Animals (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 23TH)
PS, US Pittsburgh artist Gregg Gillis (a.k.a. Girl Talk) has scrupulously created music from samples for over eight years. His fourth album on the Illegal Art label, Feed the Animals, continues his sonic evolution towards his party-infested live show and steps even closer towards a creation that is centered on pop musicality rather than attention-deficit sample splicing. Girl Talk has been known to underground audiences for several years, but it wasn't until 2006 that Gillis crossed over and caught the attention of a larger audience. With Rolling Stone, SPIN, Blender, Pitchfork, and even Beck including Night Ripper in their "best albums of 2006" lists, Girl Talk has gone on to be booked by major festivals (Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Virgin, All Points West, Pitchfork, DEMF, etc.), and solicited for remixes (Beck, Thrill Jockey, Tokyo Police Club, Grizzly Bear, Simian Mobile Disco, Peter Bjorn & John, TeddyBears, and Of Montreal). And with roughly 200 live shows over the last couple of years, Gillis has consistently played larger venues to capacity crowds (every date on his 2007 North American tour with Dan Deacon sold out). PRESS QUOTES: "One endlessly entertaining mega mash-up" - Rolling Stone "Gillis' craft is stunning and his tastes are exquisitely diverse" - Blender "A masterpiece that employs an estimated 300 samples" - SPIN "Massively recommended ... the voracious music fan's dream" --- Pitchfork "Media assassins Illegal Art come forth with yet another brilliant Girl Talk record." - XLR8R "Sounds like your favorite mash-up DJ after about 11 espressos" - Entertainment Weekly "Mashes together booty-shaking rap, iconic indie rock, and, uh, ABBA" - MTV.com.

Judys, The
Moo [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE 2008)
PS, US The original 'Moo' album finally re-issued on CD for the first time! CD sports seven bonus tracks, mainman David Bean's "Modomusic" EP. Released almost four years to the day after Washarama and following an eighteen month hiatus, The Judy's Moo album has a slightly more progressive sound: richer production values, fuller arrangements and thicker harmonies. As the band returned to the stage in 1985, this was the album that showed the band's maturity and development as songwriters and musicians. The twelve songs on Moo, laced with solid-state irony, well-placed cynicism and standard issue Judys' wit, show the band at the peak of their creativity and acted as a springboard for their live extravaganzas. The album was released with The Moo Tour - a month of live performances across the state which included giant cereal boxes, moving conveyer belts of milk cartons, and a dancing cow while the band donned milkman uniforms. Critically acclaimed and fan-revered, The Moo Album continues to be a milestone in Texas pop music.

Land Of Plenty [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 2008)
PS, US First ever official release for The Judys last album, recorded but never released! In 1990, The Judy's set out to record a new album with a new Judy's sound. Featuring the lineup that had been established over a number of years the band, including Barbara Donaho (keyboards/guitars), Lee Malone (bass), and Darwin Keys (drums), set out to explore new horizons musically and thematically. Land of Plenty injected multi-layered keyboards and guitars, stacked vocals, a gospel choir, and even a bit of banjo into the band's palatte and sought to realize Bean's vision of a new Americana musical landscape. Broad in its scope and daring in its expansion of the band's definition of itself, Land of Plenty was shelved when the group disbanded before the CD's release. While a handful of copies have been given out, this is first time this long sought-after project has been available to the general public.

Lindstrom
Where You Go I Go Too (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 19TH)
PS, US Well known for his epic & ultra melodic disco, it might come as a surprise that this album only contains three long tracks,
with the opening track being almost 29 minutes long! But when you listen to this album, you hear that it is still very much Lindstrom... just more Lindstrom-- bigger, longer, more epic & more melodic. Lindstrom says, "I realized that working within 30 minutes instead of five minutes frames forced me to think very differently to what I was used to... when working on longer tracks, there's so much more time to develop different themes & to let them evolve"

Machine Fabriek & Stephen Vitiello
Box Music (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US Rutger and Stephen sort of accidentally met through e-mail. A simple note regarding an ordering question for a CD led to an enthusiastic e-mail conversation and climaxed in a musical collaboration. This all happened in a very short period, both musicians being very inspired by the concept of "exchange," as a means to cross space and time -- Rutger living in the Netherlands and Stephen in Virginia. Most of the time, when (electronic) musicians work together it's a matter of swapping digital files. In this case they decided to do something different and sent each other a box full of (mostly non-musical, or musically non-functional) objects and recordings, with the "assignment" to make music with those objects and all as source materials. As the titles tell, we're talking about an egg cutter, thumb piano, a broken kraakle box, rice, chocolate sprinkles, old cassette tapes, a broken 7" record, etcetera, etcetera. Both musicians made two of their own solo tracks with the box they received, and the last track was done together by Rutger adding sounds and processing to a piece started by Stephen. For Rutger/ Machinefabriek this is part of his most delicate work. For Stephen, it was a new and extremely enjoyable form of long-distance collaboration. Machinefabriek: Rutger Zuydervelt, better known as Machinefabriek, lives in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Started as Machinefabriek in 2004, he released 40+ small run home-made cdr's as well as work for Type Records, Lampse, Digitalis, Staalplaat (Mort Aux Vaches) and now 12K. A double remix cd was released in 2007, with interpetations by Alva Noto, Pita, Mitchell Akiyama, Xela, Gert-Jan Prins and many more. Collaborations (live or recording) include Steinbrüchel, Jasper TX, Wouter van Veldhoven, Simon Nabatov, Frans de Waard, Aaron Martin and Peter Broderick. Stephen Vitiello: Stephen Vitiello is a sound and media artist based in Richmond, VA. CD releases include Bright and Dusty Things (New Albion), Listening to Donald Judd (Sub Rosa) and Untitled/Exchange, a collaborative CD with Michael J. Schumacher (A Question of Re-Entry). Solo exhibitions of Vitiello's sound installations, photographs and drawings have been presented at The Project, NY, Museum 52, London, the Texas Gallery, Houston, TX and Diapason, NYC. Group exhibitions include the 2002 Whitney Biennial and the 2006 Biennial of Sydney. Over the last 18 years, Stephen has collaborated with numerous musicians and artists including Scanner, Pauline Oliveros, Andrew Deutsch, Julie Mehretu and Tony Oursler.

Moondoggies
Don t Be A Stranger (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 19TH)
PS, US Seattle's Moondoggies play timeless American music. Warm three-part harmonies, gothic Rhodes organ, and wanderlust guitar mark a sound rooted in boogie blues and cosmic country. Whipsmart songwriting leads to hook-heavy tunes that bristle with originality. Shades of gospel, blues, rock, and country commingle, and wall-of-sound harmonies radiate joy and passion. The influences of The Band, The Byrds, and especially early Grateful Dead are evident, though The Moondoggies' lyrical economy and compositional sensibility render these tracks fresh and unique.

Owl Service, The And Alison O'Donnell
The Fabric of Folk EP (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 2ND)
PS, UK If you thought social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook were just devices which sucked you into an unstoppable vortex of wasted time, then think again. A chance discussion between Steven Collins and Alison O'Donnell, formerly of legendary Irish prog-folk troupe Mellow Candle, took place on such a website and out of that conversation came the first fruits of this collaboration. The Fabric of Folk is a 5-track EP featuring Collins' in his guise as main man of the Owl Service, one generation of folk-rock crashing head-long into an earlier, glorious era represented here by the considerable vocal talents of Alison O'Donnell. Capturing the many different faces of folk-rock, the five songs here - two are original compositions by the pair, one of which was written with the Straw Bear Band's Dominic Cooper - are perfectly formed, heartfelt and touching but with more than a hint of darkness. This follows on from the Owl Service's previous release for Static Caravan, the Cine 3" CD (VAN 140), and arrives alongside their debut album A Garland of Song, which is being released on Southern Records. Meanwhile, Alison's former band Mellow Candle have returned to prominence on the back of the newly repackaged Swaddling Songs - their solitary album release - which has been remastered and reissued by Esoteric/Cherry Red. Inspired by a mutual recognition and respect, the pairing of Collins' band with O'Donnell is a dreamy combination. Imbued with a sense of revivalism, The Fabric of Folk is far from backward-looking and instead concocts something incredibly new which, while referencing the production techniques and masterful storytelling of Brit-folk's heyday, is bubbling with new ideas and an inherent knack for crafting sublime arrangements.

Rodriguez
Cold Fact (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 19TH)
PS, US It's one of the lost classics of the '60s, a psychedelic masterpiece drenched in colour & inspired by life, love, poverty, rebellion, and, of course, "jumpers, coke, sweet mary jane". The album is Cold Fact & what's more intriguing is that its maker - a shadowy figure known as Rodriguez - was, for many years, lost too. A decade ago, he was rediscovered working on a Detroit building site, unaware that his defining album had become not only a cult classic, but for the people of South Africa, a beacon of revolution. Co-produced by Beastie Boys/Mos Def sample heavy guitarist Dennis Cofffey. Featuring legendary Motown players The Funk Bros. PS, AUSTRALIA As completely incidental as it may seem, the acronym for Sailboats Are White is in fact SAW. Coincidence? Perhaps, but it's also a pretty accurate musical description. Schaeffer, Janek
Extended Play [Triptych for the child survivors of war and conflict] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US LIMITED EDITION 600. LINE is proud to release the latest audio work from British composer and installation artist Janek Schaefer based on his installation of the same title. Installation Reviews: "a piece to return to again and again... haunting and lulling" [The Wire, UK] "so inspirational, and in many ways very spiritual" [Gerry Turvey] "I was so deeply touched by your piece" [Mandeep Kaur Samra] Red is the colour of Life, of Death, and of Love. Scarlett, my first child, was born in 2005, and since then I have been very aware of how lucky we all are. have been constantly comparing this to the fact that my mother was born in Warsaw in 1942 - the epicenter of World War II. How opposite can two beginnings be? This inspired me to produce the Extended Play installation, which continuously and positively celebrates hope and new beginnings, for child survivors in all situations around the world. The original idea for the composition came from learning about the 'Jodoform' system of secret musical messages that were broadcast by the BBC Service, during music they played was given a particular meaning, which was interpreted by Polish Underground. Discovered from the original Jodoform logbook, that the lovely Polish folk song 'Tango Lyczakowskie', was broadcast on the day my mother was born. Song describes how children in 1918, had been forced to take up arms, in defense of their town. From this tune, chose a short rising musical phrase, and with my arranger Michael Jennings, developed a ten-minute score. Each of the three solo parts was then recorded separately, edited, and cut onto vinyl. In the gallery, 3 x Cello EP's, 3 x Piano EP's, and 3 x Violin EP's are played at either 33, 45, or 78rpm using nine retro record players. These play continuously, and each was modified to stop playing briefly in response to the audience moving around the exhibition. This has the effect of changing and extending the composition, so that it is never the same again.

Souls On Board
Blood Face (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 19TH)
PS, AUSTRALIA Like some unholy breeding ground, SOULS ON BOARD are loyal to an ever-evolving matrimony - beauty and dirt, ugliness and invention, dumb and smart, mind-blowing power and grace. BLOOD FACE is the new EP, the Melbourne group's second release after their "hurtling and assured" self-titled EP debut of 2005. Released by wunderkinds Low Transit Industries, the EP saw the band draw comparisons to The Pixies & Sonic Youth. BLOOD FACE picks up the hazardous extremes of that first rugged EP and beats them into a new shape. A shape with pointed edges, electricity in the veins and a wall of psychedelic sound bubbling under a whip-smart guitar bleed section. While the tunes bulge with shining phrases & stirring twists, lyrically BLOOD FACE grapples with dark visions and uncomfortable realities - these ills given some respite by the pop playfulness of the 6 tracker.

Sweet, Matthew
Sunshine Lies (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 26TH)
PS, US SPECIAL PRE-ORDER PRICE! New album from Matthew Sweet joined by Susanna Hoffs, Ric Menck and Richard Lloyd. Pretty Parasolly, dontcha think? Without warning, this consummate artist just may have made the album of his life, not by consciously trying to recapture the brilliance of his three milestones, Girlfriend, Altered Beast and 100% Fun, but simply by following his big heart, while hot-wiring the process between inspiration and execution so that there's no longer any distance between them. With tongue only partly in cheek, Matthew describes the new record's sound as "power-pop-folk-rock-psychedelic-melodic-singer-songwriter-type stuff." That turns out to be an accurate general description, but the real intrigue is in the details. By turns achingly melodic and drivingly visceral, Sunshine Lies swirls with relatable emotion and bad-ass attitude, seamlessly incorporating the artist's expansive aesthetic from one end (poetry) to the other (noise). On Sunshine Lies, Sweet intermixes his distinctive brand of shimmering folk rock ("Byrdgirl," "Daisychain," "Around You Now") and signature goosebump ballads ("Feel Fear," "Pleasure Is Mine," "Back of My Mind"), with the album's primary impulse, what he refers to as "the crazy songs." These are heady, arrangement-based pieces where anything goes in terms of tone, texture and performance-the mindblowing "Time Machine," the balls-to-the-wall "Room to Rock," the brawny "Flying" and the Who-like "Let's Love."

Splendid Isolation (Pre-Order)
PS, SWEDEN A collection of exclusive tracks from the Radio Dept., Testbild!, Most Valuable Players, Differnet, Action Biker, Viktor Sjöberg, VED, Peter Jackson, Peter Nilsson, Redmalm, Enheten för musik och melodi, Malkovic, Erik de Vahl, Band in a Box, Flow Flux Clan, Robotboy, and Jian. Between January and December 2007 Friendly Noise released 18 mp3 singles offered as free downloads from www.friendlynoise.se. From the start it was intended to be a one-year-long project. The idea was simple: contributions chosen by us from our extended family of old friends and new discoveries, usually two songs, together with an introduction by the artists themselves and a picture to illustrate and enhance, once or twice a month. This was meant as a complement to our CD releases, and a chance to easily distribute great songs, in cases where the album context isn't necessary. These two ways of distribution aren't contradictory, they're related, as we stated on our website. Soon we realized the series had become a success, both when it came to the quality of the output and the amount of interest generated. So "Splendid Isolation" - our third compilation after "Friendly People Making Noise" (2003) and "Are You Scared To Get Happy?" (2006) - is our way of documenting the series through a selection of the songs and thus giving them a more official kind of release. The record is also a celebration of five years of Friendly Noise as a label. The order of the songs on the record isn't chronological, it's instead our attempt to make the record sound as good as possible as a whole. TRACKLIST: 1. Bognor Regis (Peter Jackson) 2. (Jack) Lullaby (Viktor Sjöberg) 3. Rondo (Most Valuable Players) 4. Stratoscope (VED) 5. Get Nowhere (Peter Nilsson) 6. Hultviksvägen 7 (Peter Jackson) 7. The Bravest Person I Know (Redmalm) 8. PS, US W/his new album he reaches back into the past & profoundly reclaims many of his most classic songs. While preparing the album, he saw that the quality & breadth of the tunes were undiminished & decided to rework the songs to add color to the previously spare material.

Woodhands
Heart Attack (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)
PS, US An electro-pop duo w/ a retlentlessly energetic live show & a total disdain for anything but balls to the wall, dirty,
sexy dance parties. The buzz has been built almost entirely on their live show, and have been dubbed "as close to a two-headed indie Timberlake as it gets.

Zomes
S-T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 26TH)
PS, US Debut solo from former LUNGFISH/ PUPILS guitarist. This album is full of beautiful Seesselbergsized chunks of loop-like melodies that effervesce while Osborne brings them to life. There is a cinematic quality to the material here that recalls "library music," East German Indianerfilmen soundtracks, & even Blues Control at their most humid.
