Parasol New Arrivals • July 10, 2007

Hey there,

We are on the up and up today and let me tell you why. Our fearless leader, Geoff and Jim “Leatherman” Kelly have somehow miraculously (if momentarily) resurrected our coffee maker. It looks like all of the episodes of Macgyver and Red Green they've been watching have paid off.

As you know, today’s the 10th and we warned you in last week’s update that this is a heavy release day to say the least. So instead of typing we’re going to pack Spoon and Iron and Wine orders.

Below we’ve constructed a map to ear-pleaserville. Enjoy the view and visit often.

Until then,

Royal & Paul

Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

St. Vincent " Marry Me" CD $13.25 (Beggars)
Debut album of widescreen pop wonderment from Sufjan Stevens' band multi-instrumentalist and Polyphonic Spree guitarist and elfin-pixie goddess Annie Clark, in heavy rotation at Parasol HQ for months (we've all got a huge crush on her). Outside of being indescribably delicious there certainly are moments of Kate Bush/Bjork-ish sonic oddballery and some Sufjan-esque arch-orchestralness, but Clark's cinematic pop epics blaze away with her own astonishing candlepower fueling the engines. Check out sound samples on our front page.

Prefab Sprout "Steve McQueen" [expanded UK remaster] DCD $25.00 (Epic)
Jim says: A milestone purchase for me in my formative years as music fan and record collector, this 1985 album of oh-so-virtuoso soft-rock romance resonated with a certain splendor that kept my scrawny teenage self from blushing too pinkly when pulling this glossy, jazz-inflected masterpiece from between my Pop Will Eat Itself 12"-ers (hey, I liked them when they were a fuzzy guitar band) and Public Image Limited LPs (oh, there’s that die-cut Pylon record too)… The Sprouts looked pretty tough that misty morn, sleeved in leather upon yon immobile motorcycle, but whom were they kidding? Called Two Wheels Good in the US Steve McQueen was the lightest light rock, but the songwriting caught my ear, at that tender, impressionable age, and my trend line skewed "wimpy" for years after. In this essential expanded DCD set you get original producer Thomas Dolby’s meticulous re-mastering of the original classic UK album plus a recently recorded set of astounding acoustic arrangements of 8 of Steve McQueen's 11 songs by Prefabs frontman Paddy McAloon. Check out sound samples on our front page.

New Releases

African Music Machine
Black Water Gold
PS, US 8 piece New Orleans funk outfit that got their start as the house band for the Jewel/Paul label axis, playing on records by Fontella Bas, Little Johnny, Rosco Robinson, Ted Taylor, Tommie Young & singer/producer Bobby Patterson. From '72-'74 they cut several singles for the Patterson owned Soul Power subsidiary, most done in a heavy, JB vein, sometimes with a bit of creole influence thrown in. They now fetch outrageous prices on the collector market. Now all here in digital glory & a good price point.

Alex Ogg Reynolds & Hearn
No More Hereos : Complete History of UK Punk 1976-1980
PS, US A detailed & definitive history of British punk music. In '76, music changed forever. Punk arrived offering an electrifying alternative to the bloated, sterile rock music of the day. This chronicles not only the icons of the punk movement, but also looks at the lesser known bands & music of the era. Here are detailed accounts, often at variance w/conventional wisdom, about the careers of groups like the Sex Pistols, the Clash, the Damned, the Buzzcocks, the Stranglers, & Siouxsie & the Banshees. Based on 200 interviews w/some of punk's key players, this is an exhaustive A-Z overview of the subject, incl. extensive biographical notes, complete discographies, a buyer's guide, & many never before seen photos. 700 pgs.

Ariel Kill Him
Named After You
PS, JAPAN "Named After You" is the first new full-length album by Ariel Kill Him (aka David Lehnberg of Gävle, Sweden) since 2003's successful "In The Pyramid" (10,000 copies sold in the US, Japan and Europe). Although more electronic than AKH's three previous albums, "Named After You" feels more organic; an effect which Lehnberg achieved by keeping his arrangements stripped down and spontaneous. The Quince release features two bonus tracks, "It's Christmas" and "With Celesta." Lehnberg was the singer for Lelah (3 albums) and currently sings and writes songs with the band Ikaros (1 album so far). For fans of Mum, Sagor & Swing, Mew, Jeniferever, Stina Nordenstam and The Gloria Record.

Beatallica
Sgt. Hetfield's Motorbreath Pub Band
PS, US Internet metalic darlings who combine the best band of the 60's with the best band of the 80's. Beatallica is a parodic band that plays music made from combinations of songs of The Beatles and Metallica. A Beatallica song is typically a blend of a Beatles song and a Metallica song with a related title (e.g. "The Thing That Should Not Let It Be", combining The Beatles' "Let It Be" and Metallica's "The Thing That Should Not Be"), though sometimes just a Beatles song will be used as a basis with modified lyrics. The lyrics slip back and forth between the two songs-occasionally neither in lieu of original lyrics comically referencing Metallica, heavy metal music or the heavy metal community-while the scansion and melody are usually Beatles-based, the music is played metal style with some Metallica riffs and solos thrown in. Consistent quirks made in the lyrics also criticize glam metal much in the fashion that thrash metal fans would do (bands like Poison, White Lion, Dokken, Warrant, Winger and Scorpions are examples). A hoot!

Boat
Let's Drag Our Feet!
PS, US BOAT is back with their second LP entitled, "Let's Drag Our Feet!". Recorded in the basement in Seattle, Washington, the trio has improved upon the lofi sound of their debut. This time out, each song is an anthem. Slightly fuzzy vocals collide with simple guitar lines, start stop drumming, handclaps, la las, ba bas, ooh oohs, slippery theremin, some 8 bit Nintendo keyboard sounds, electronic kazoo, double trumpet, and enough energy to make you play air drums or shout out lyrics in the car /office/deli/wherever you spend your days. Seattle's BOAT proudly takes it's place along side the ranks of the rejected with it's debut LP - Corey duBrowa Magnet BOAT's somehow able to rein all those elements in to create playful, catchy-as-hell pop jams that will lodge themselves into your heads and your hearts and refuse to come out. - GorillavsBear [SLOPPY POP] BOAT's ridiculously charming pop songs have burrowed into my psyche, and I don't think they're leaving anytime soon. The Seattle trio's hand-clappin' clunky pop tunes come off as ultra-fun, but D. Crane's half-sung, half-shouted lyrics prove him not only a great smart-ass, but a thoughful and sympathetic narrator, too. - AMY MCCULLOUGH Willamette Week Boat's songs are great: part solid and charming melodic pop drenched with narratives and part goofy but endearing indie rock laced with the sounds of a drunken orchestra. So thanks for the warning, Boat, but next time, don't be afraid to put yourselves out there. You're pretty fuckin' rad. - MEGAN SELING The Stranger.

Buffalo Tom
Three Easy Pieces (ON SALE)
PS, US New album from one of Boston's finest, their first album in 9 years, welcome to the new millennium! KEXP: "Aside from a handful of shows in their hometown of Boston, Buffalo Tom has kept a low profile this decade, which makes their new album a welcome surprise. Their 1st record since '98's Smitten sounds like prime Buffalo Tom - passionate, melodic, roots-tinged alt-rock alternating between catchy anthemic rockers and heartfelt ballads."

Cleandenim, Patrick
Baby Comes Home
PS, US Baby Comes Home is the extraordinary debut album by 22 year old PATRICK CLEANDENIM. Combining a love of classic songcraft with a mountain of charisma, Cleandenim is just at the start of a highly promising career. After playing with Kansas favorites CLOCKWORK, Patrick began performing under his own name with help from his brother ANDREW and Clockwork drummer JIM PILLAR. Shows opening for bands like The Decemberists and John Vanderslice followed until Patrick moved to New York to attend the prestigious Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Arts. Two years later, in December of 2005, Patrick returned to Lawrence to record Baby Comes Home. Booking an armful of sessions at Black Lodge Recording Studio (co-owned by local heroes the Get Up Kids) and with a killer rhythm section in tow, Patrick expanded the band to orchestra size by enlisting the help and goodwill of music students from University of Kansas to serve as string and horn sections. The sessions took place in the graveyard slot of 12.00 - 4.00 am. On the last day of recording, Patrick turned 21. Baby Comes Home inhabits a lush world of its own. From the opening drum beat crack of "Baby Comes Home" to the dying seconds of "Hollywood," there's a sense of identity to the album that's rarely achieved these days, like a great novel or film rather than just a collection of songs. While prime time Scott Walker may be an initial point of comparison, Baby Comes Home also features a strong jazz influence on many of its tracks alongside the footprints of Phil Spector, Elvis Presley, David Axelrod and a Tin Pan Alley approach to classic pop song structures.

DJ Mayonnaise
Still Alive
PS, US The rumors are true. DJ MAYONNAISE is, indeed, Still Alive. Eight years after the release of his debut-Anticon's inaugural instrumental LP, 55 Stories-Mayo has returned in more ways than one. First, to his hometown of Portland, Maine-where he rediscovered inspiration amongst the dusty vinyl bins and damp seascapes of his youth-and now, to the waiting world with sophomore album in hand. Still Alive is both a fitting follow-up to Stories and a reinvention of sorts. While DJ Mayonnaise is still a master of sample and scratch, he's turned his attention to the art of composition and the subtlety of details. And though Still Alive has its moments of quiet, rainy-day beauty, these serve as counterpoints to a brightness that permeates the songs. Simply put, this album, too, is alive.

Dolour
The Years in the Wilderness
PS, JAPAN The fourth and strongest album to date by Shane Tutmarc's Dolour, "The Years in the Wilderness" is an ambitious 19-song set split up into two parts: the bombastic, occasionally dark rock of Storm & Stress and the lighter, but moody, jazz-pop of Hell or Highwater. The new album is a departure from Dolour's previous albums, New Old Friends (2004) and Suburbiac (2002), which were very manicured, production-heavy albums, featuring hundreds of over-dubs performed by Tutmarc himself. On this album, Tutmarc looked to the past to find a fresh way to record; inspired by Miles Davis's recording sessions, he gathered his favorite musicians and let the songs come together live in a Seattle studio over two very full sessions. Storm & Stress combines the grandeur of Led Zeppelin's more ambitious tracks with the pop-noise of the Pixies and Nirvana. Hell or Highwater showcases Tutmarc's love for traditional American songwriting, with nods to gospel, country, Americana, and Tin Pan Alley. Themes of love, spiritual yearning, and self-doubt lend a warmth and depth to this music that is beyond Tutmarc's years.

Gogol Bordello
Super Taranta!
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Album after album, show after show, Eugene Hütz and his group of enthusiastic, disheveled gypsies continue to make fantastically inventive, provocative, smart, raucous music that refuses to be categorized or confined...his ability to convey the common human experience, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, or even language. Hütz, like every great vocalist -- and he is one, although not in the traditional sense -- doesn't rely on only the safety net of words to communicate his message, so even when he sings in Ukrainian or English or whatever else, his intent, his ideas, his passion (and needless to say those of the band, who combine rustic folk progressions with modern punk stylings seamlessly) is always comprehensible. Super Taranta! is the culmination of superb musicianship, endless energy, and an inborn sense of fun and a dedication to progression and innovation, and if that's not something to celebrate and dance to, it's hard to know what is." Monolake
Interstate
PS, GERMANY The second Monolake record, originally released in 1999, now newly digitally remastered. Monolake is an open project dedicated to computer-generated music, founded in 1995 by Berlin-based Robert Henke and Gerhard Behles. If you are looking for German minimal techno done with maximum attention to detail and true dedication to sound, Monolake is one of the first projects to look at. After being highly influenced by the exploding minimal dub techno scene of Berlin during the mid-'90s and after early releases on Chain Reaction, the project soon started to develop its own trademark sound, a more complex and rich flavor with an abundance of minimal while still keeping a constant rhythmical pulse as the main force behind every track. Interstate offers a lovely bouquet of deep flowery textures, floating around complex grooves, embedded in all sorts of atmospheric background noises and field recordings. Interstate is light and summery, breathing the warm air of happiness and its musical density and abundance makes it an outstanding release even ten years later. The CD has been out of print for a couple of years and this re-release is housed in a newly-designed digipack and with a new mastering. The mastering, executed with outstanding dedication by Rashad Becker, is more than just a technical process, it is an aesthetic statement. While the album itself is very digital and clean, the new mastering has been done entirely with selected analog equipment, resulting in a crunchier, darker and warmer atmosphere. Monolake - Interstate, an essential release and a must-have item for everyone into electronic music.

Monstrance
S/T
PS, US Monstrance is the name given to a trio comprised of XTC's resident guitarist, songwriter, and figurehead Andy Partridge; Shriekback keyboardist (and way-back XTC member) Barry Andrews; and drummer Martyn Barker, also of Shriekback. Any expectations that the self-titled Monstrance might sound like either of those venerable outfits can be tossed right out the window, though. This is two discs of purely improvisational music: no overdubs, no composition or rehearsal -- just three exceptional musicians heading into the studio and playing what their minds and hands tell them to, with little regard for accessibility, form, or mood. One might expect it to resemble free jazz, and Partridge has made no secret of his affection for same. But Monstrance sound nothing like Ornette Coleman or Cecil Taylor either. Like free jazz, it's often difficult music -- no place more so than the lengthy, meandering, tentative opening track, "I Lovely Cosmonaut" -- but stick it out and accept it on its own terms, and it bears more riches than it has a right to. That is, when it doesn't get mired in its own muck, unable to find a way out. Monstrance, for better and worse, never stays in one place for long. "Ur Tannoy" is a screech-fest of explosive noise, swirling, cacophonic bursts of feedback, roiling drums, and hypnotic (OK, annoying) loops. "Tagoda Tailfin" is faux ambient, suggestive of, though not really akin to, Partridge's 1994 collaboration with Harold Budd, Through the Hill. But where that music was composed and manicured, this is freewheeling and often out of control -- exhilarating at times, compelling, but undeniably indulgent, too. "Torturetainment" -- great evocative title, that -- not unpredictably, filters from metallic/prog rocky to vaguely soothing, while the album-closing "Priapple," 16 minutes of noodling in search of a song, feels like an abandoned soundtrack to a B horror flick. Will die-hard XTC fans take to it? That depends on whether they come to XTC for the band's quirky, angular pop and Partridge's finely crafted songs or for that seemingly now-defunct band's more experimental, edgy efforts. Suffice to say if it's solely for the former, this lengthy exercise in free-form won't win their hearts. Shriekback people will feel the funk, but shouldn't expect Monstrance to incite them to dance. In the end, only those with a great tolerance for ambling, off-the-cuff music-making will likely take the ride all the way through. Monstrance -- though there is no denying the intelligence and probing inquisitiveness that went into it -- is not for casual listening, it's not party music, and it isn't a whole lot of fun. But stick with it, give it a chance to take hold, really pay attention, open up, and as the music finds its way deep within your cranium you may just find yourself marveling at its nuanced shifts, inspired sound clashes, and ability to challenge its own makers at every turn.

Packard, Morgan
Airships Fill the Sky/Unsimulatable (CD/DVD)
PS, US Morgan Packard's debut solo full-length, Airships Fill the Sky, finds him folding cello, accordion and saxophone into a decidedly digital context - involving fragmented elements of techno, house, breakbeat-oriented microsound and post-ambient tendencies - retaining his acoustic sensibilities in earnest, while taking advantage of his long-time immersion in a variety of electronic genres. While he has further honed the melodic, textural meanderings from some of his past work, here Packard returns to his rhythmic roots, and continues to filter his jazz and classical background through everything he does. Deftly using his self-made software techniques, he puts these pieces together with a view towards the hypnotic power of the loop, coupled with a distancing from it. From the opening title track's accordion lines to house bumps, to "Mink Hills" - with its symphonic clusters sitting harmoniously in layers of horizontal sound and clattering percussion pops - to the unabashedly funk-filled synth movements of "Waterbugs" - Packard manages to span a variety of musical choices and retain a coherence throughout. The accompanying Unsimulatable DVD provides a snapshot into the collaboration between Packard and Joshue Ott. Ott uses his homemade software, entitled SuperDraw, to wield a flexible, visual instrument. The collaboration between Ott and Packard (which includes almost exclusively different music from the CD) is the culmination of two years of playing live shows together and consistently honing their interaction and the means by which their computers communicate with each other. The DVD portion is in NTSC format, region 0, 36:59 minutes long; the music featured on the DVD is exclusive to this format.

Prefab Sprout
Steve McQueen [re-issue, remastered, expanded]
PS, UK Upon the UK release of Steve McQueen in 1985 frontman Paddy Mcaloon explained "I'm probably the best songwriter on the planet... Seriously...on my day, who are my rivals?" Though assuredly just stirring up the press, the fact is, he was right. It remains one of The Best Pop Albums EVER... This is a 2007 digitally-remastered double-disc expansion of the popular UK band's much loved second album, originally released in 1985. Original producer Thomas Dolby did the remastering Job, ensuring that all the band's original artistic sound and intent remains intact. Include a second disc with eight of the album's 11 tracks in re-arranged acoustic form, beautiful versions that prove the songs' genius, recorded by Paddy in 2006. MOJO: "The ultimate album [of the era]...as sublime as pop can be." UNCUT: "Music steeped in the classics - Lennon & McCartney, Bacharach & David, even pre-rock'n'roll types such as Gershwin - but rich in emotion as well as intelligence." PS. This album was released in the US under the name 'Two Wheels Good'.

PS, US Pumice's rollicking brand of loner DIY - precariously devoid of gratuitous pose - is a colorful, desolate sound world unto itself. Pebbles offer the unlikely marriage of astute refinement & wild abandon, with songs uplifting & sincere, yet dark with oddball substance to spare. Self-recorded, committed to 8 track tape & mastered by Pete Swanson (YELLOW SWANS), resulting in the biggest-sounding record in the Pumice canon. The small silver guitar remains at the fore, only now that signature of the Pumice sound is presented in startling clarity, augmented by Neville's booming drums, piano flourishes & tape manipulations.

Saint Joan
Wrecker's Lantern
PS, AUSTRALIA Album title alludes to the 19th century practice of luring a ship onto the rocks by faking the beam of a lighthouse with a swinging lantern, causing the ship to run aground, its treasure to be plundered. It continues the bands interest in all things maritime...the sea as the subconscious as Carl Jung would have it. The band takes inspiration from Hieronymus Bosch in "The Four Last Things" and The Tempest in "Singing Bowl". They conjure love & loss, seasick sailors & freight trains, hills & mountains, rivers & fading street lights. Epic, psychedelic stream-of-consciousness psychodramas about loss like 'December' contrast with the more fragmented, melancholy of "Gone" with its looping guitar & lush strings. The wide screen folk-rock drive of "Singing Bowl", place it alongside vintage Walkabouts. Recorded in an old warehouse in the autumn "The Wrecker's Lantern" evokes time & place at every turn and yet seeks to transcend them. It is the sound of beauty, timeless & incarnate.

Santa Dog
Kittyhawk
PS, JAPAN Santa Dog play sparkly, sassy, summer-soaked pop with chiming guitars and a sinister fringe. Think Blondie going two rounds with the Throwing Muses on the edge of a cliff with a stiff breeze whipping up skirts and mischief and you're still nowhere near capturing the band's distinctive sound and uniquely English charm. This Bristol-based four piece's debut album, Kittyhawk, comes on the heels of their three self-released EPs that captivated audiences and press alike. Santa Dog are 'perfect pop' (Lostmusic), 'more addictive than opium' (Whisperin' & hollerin'), and play 'the kind of classic guitar pop that exists in its own universe, mercifully free of the shackles of hyperbole & trend' (Norman Records). Also look out for the debut single, released in the UK in May on 7" vinyl and digital download through new London indie label, SoundsExperience.

Sonic Youth
Daydream Nation (4XLP)
PS, US Daydream Nation was SONIC YOUTH's sixth album, their first double LP, and their last for an indie label before signing with Geffen. Widely considered to be their watershed moment, Daydream Nation catapulted them into the mainstream and proved that indie bands could enjoy wide commercial success without compromising their artistic vision. The original 1988 album has been remastered under the band's supervision. The bonus platters begin with previously unreleased live performances from the Daydream Nation Tour. Culled from performances at CBGB in New York, The Paradiso in Amsterdam, and several other primo venues, Live Daydream includes live versions of every song on the original album. Added to that are four studio bonuses: "Within You, Without You" (a Beatles cover from the NME-sponsored charity Beatles tribute album Sgt. Pepper Knew My Father), "Computer Age," from the Neil Young tribute album The Bridge, "Electricity" from the Captain Beefheart tribute album Fast And Bulbous, and a cover of Mudhoney's "Touch Me, I'm Sick," originally released as a Sub Pop 7-inch single. LEE RANALDO's original demo of "Eric's Trip" concludes the album. Includes a 16-page booklet with liner notes and unpublished photos. The album to be performed in its entirety at select shows in North America and Europe.

The album quickly moves into uncharted territory with the atmospheric "The Ghost Of You Lingers" and moves through several different stylistic changes from the explosive "You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb" to the wall-of-sound horns of radio single "The Underdog". Their most heartfelt batch of songs since 2001's "Girls

St. Vincent
Marry Me
PS, US St. Vincent is the band of singer-multi-instrumentalist, Annie Clark. The 23- year old is a veteran guitarist for two musical armies, The Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Steven's touring band. On Marry Me we see a smartly crafted deluge of guitar, bass, and beats pulsing forward with warmth and immediacy alongside Annie's classy soprano. Her lyrics can be weird or tongue-in-cheek or dead serious, capturing verily what it feels like to be 23 years old in America and caught up in the delirium of love blues and wartime blues and the various swashbuckling adventures of existence. She's been compared to everyone from Bjork to Kate Bush to Jeff Buckley, and her beautiful voice melds perfectly with her intricate guitar work. Horns and strings cry out brassy and full-bodied over digital keyboards. Songs rock out vigorously, break down into squiggling post-noise-rock deconstructions, roll out mellow and slow-flowing as a river. Backing harmonies and kiddie choirs loom in the distance, rise, and lilt above the stately grandiosity. And she keeps good company. David Bowie's longtime pianist Mike Garson shows up on two songs, as does Brian Teasley from Man or Astro-man but, mostly, it's just Annie, a multi-instrumentalist for a new era.

Steinbecks
Far From The Madding Crowd
PS, US On Far From the Madding Crowd Steinbecks' songwriters, brothers Josh & Joel Meadows, team up with their cousin Tali White (Lucksmiths, Guild League) to craft one of the first shining pop gems of the post-Candle Melbourne pop scene. The Meadows brothers have been writing and singing songs about things that matter to them for longer than either care to remember, but Far From the Madding Crowd marks the first time the brothers have written and recorded with their cousin. Two songs on the album - 'The Doppler Effect', a powerful pop punch that dissects the city/country relationship, and the gorgeous 'Have You Ever Looked After a Song?' - are sung and co-written by White. Other stand-outs include opener '1987 + 1994 = 2007', in which the 'becks somehow manage to blend the sensibilities of the Pet Shop Boys with the sensuality of Pavement, and the angsty nature hymn, 'Moon & Stars'. Musically the record has echoes of Nick Drake, Lloyd Cole, My Morning Jacket, The Chills and Big Star. Lyrically, the 'becks tackle questions as diverse as: what happens to modern society when the oil runs out? Why is compromise not a dirty word when you're in love? will we ever learn to learn from the past? And, if you could go back to being a teenager, would you? The world is in a mess, The Steinbecks seem to acknowledge, but faith, hope and love remain. Far From the Madding Crowd exists within this reality and tries to tell the story of it through the only medium The Steinbecks know: the pop song.

Teaneck
Masters of Achievement
PS, JAPAN California three-piece, Teaneck, flaunt a confident rock sense and eminently hummable pop melodies on Masters of Achivement, their first full-length album. Known for their energetic live performances, Teaneck formed after lead singer, Loren Isaac, was hit by a car and realized the time to rock out was 'now or never.' The fast-charging trio developed an international following through the magic of MySpace, and eventually recorded with the producer of power pop faves, Ozma. The resulting songs fuse past and present, pungent and pleasant, with the taut simplicity that only a three-piece can generate. Skipping along through sunny, country-tinged rock, alt-pop catchiness, and triumphant rock and roll, Masters of Achievement certainly lives up to its title. For fans of Weezer, Fountains of Wayne, and The Foo Fighters. Initial release features limited edition special packaging.

Torske, Bjorn
Feil Knapp
PS, NORWAY First album in six years! In many ways "Feil Knapp" (Norwegian for wrong button) represents a sound that sits somewhere in between "Trøbbel", 1999's seminal "Nedi Myra" on Ferox and his underground cult hit "Søppelmann" on Svek. With influences ranging everything from Count Ossie & The Residents via 22 Skidoo to Idut Boys, Torske has created his very own & characteristic signature sound, a unique blend of warm & melancholic house, quirky avant-disco, leftfield electronica & dark, heavy psychedelic dub. In other words; this album has everything that we have learnt to love Bjorn for. Weirdly melodic & wonderfully groovy.

Grand Cru 2007
PS, GERMANY This 2CD compilation is the beginning of a yearly series and is a representative selection of established Connaisseur artists as well as up-and-coming new members of the label's roster. "Grand Cru" is a term used in the wine business and normally denominates a special wine, which is made from the best grapes of both one wine-producing area and one vintage. The stylistic diversities featured on this compilation aren't less refined and versatile. CD1 features artists such as Afrilounge, with an elegantly lowered house groove and Jochen Trappe, setting the benchmark with his glitch-rock tech. Daso teams up with his ingenious partner, Pawas to make even the most lame couch potato taste their own very special Beaujolais and freak out on the dancefloor. Furthermore, Ripperton bares his Detroit soul with a special track that makes everyone's heart beat and the legs boogie. Needless to say, Connaisseur's old school techno preachers Plasmik are also on board with a crunchy and massively deep groover while Girrèsse & Erb and Estroe & ZoëXenia manage to come up with tracks interwoven with smooth vocals. Pele is a highly promising producer talent who had his debut on Connaisseur with a compact gem. CD2 is a joyous melding of all these sounds and more, mixed by the inimitable Patrick Chardronnet. Other artists include: Kollektiv Turmstrasse, Sebastian Roya, Simon Baker, Shokh and Rekleiner.

Art In Manila
Set The Woods On Fire (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 7TH)
PS, US After Azure Ray disbanded, member Orenda Fink put her energies into a solo record in 2005, called "Invisible Ones". Upon touring in support of that album with various revolving band members, she chose the cream of the crop and formed a new group called Art Belle, then changed it to Art In Manila (a nod to radio host Art Bell's exodus to the Phillipines). On this release, the band flirts playfully with genre wanderlust without ever abandoning cohesion. Moody slow-burners follow four-to-the-floor rockers that butt up against serene ballads. A powerful debut.

Tropism (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 24TH)
PS, US "Many of the songs have this feeling that's hard to describe but so satisfying to hear: like a sadness that's been buried and you're soldiering quietly on, and not making a show of it. The spare, lovely melodies swell and recede, all with perfect precision and tremendous understated feeling. How this music can be so emotional without ever getting sentimental or corny is completely beyond me" - IRA GLASS, "This American Life"

Bishop Allen
The Broken String (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 24TH)
PS, US 2006 was a big year for BISHOP ALLEN - The band recorded and self-released an EP every month of the year. Fifty-eight songs later, they completed one of the most ambitious recording projects in recent memory. Their 2003 debut, "Charm School," was a hooky indie-pop gem, but Bishop Allen's EP material proves far more sophisticated and addictive. With the EPs, Bishop Allen's pop smarts sound timeless, escaping the indie-pop idiom and revealing a language informed by the Kinks, Dylan, and the Zombies. While it was in motion, the EP-a-month project was the toast of the blogosphere, but it wasn't just an online phenomenon; it garnered the band attention everywhere from the Wall Street Journal to NPR's Song of the Day. This adulation all happened without the benefit of a record label or publicist. Bishop Allen was truly DIY, recording and releasing their own records and booking their own tours. In early 2007, the band struck a partnership with DEAD OCEANS and the first fruit of this relationship is Bishop Allen's sophomore album, "The Broken String." If Bishop Allen made a huge musical jump from the 2003 debut to the 2006 EPs, the band made a quantum leap on "The Broken String." If Ed Sullivan were alive today, Bishop Allen's story-songs would be ripe for prime time. "The Broken String" is not just a great record by Bishop Allen standards. It is poised to be the pop soundtrack to the summer of 2007.

Carta
The Glass Bottom Boat (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 21ST)
PS, UK The fruits of a lengthy process involving an ever-changing line-up featuring a revolving door of San Francisco musicians, this is the long-awaited debut from Carta, now with settled personnel surrounding core member Kyle Monday. Engineered by Beulah's Eli Crews and featuring Sacha Galvagna and Jared Matt Greenberg (Charles Atlas) and Alexander Kort (Subtle) amongst others, 'The Glass Bottom Boat' is a remarkably accomplished album, as one might expect considering the pedigree of those involved. Having found a home on eclectic UK label Resonant, Carta's audience should be broad and widespread, with their overall sound avoiding pigeonholes. The album is mostly instrumental, predominantly downtempo but with constant emphasis on melody. The title track features full vocals from Sarah Bell, and sounds like the best thing Espers have ever recorded. Packaged in lavish six-panel digipak. Early review from US site www.thesilentballet.com: 'It's rare that we see an album that is so grounded in reality, yet simultaneously this is immaculately breathtaking.'

Crow, Rob
Living Well (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 24TH)
PS, US NOW AVAILABLE IN LIMITED EDITION VINYL FORMAT WITH FIVE NON-ALBUM BONUS TRACKS!!! Somewhere between the breakneck touring to support PINBACK'S breakthrough TOUCH AND GO debut, "Summer in Abaddon", and the release of THE LADIES' debut album (his collaboration with ZACH HILL of HELLA/TEAM SLEEP), the impossibly prolific Rob Crow had an epiphany: SLOW DOWN. Not coincidentally, this revelation occurred shortly after the birth of his first child (named Robertdale Crow III, of course). Crow's time at home was suddenly more important than ever. His family is all over "Living Well", his third solo album: in the album title, the artwork (layered with dozens of family photos), and the intensely personal lyrics which document Crow's courtship with his wife, their marriage, and the subsequent birth of their first child. Not only is "Living Well" Crow's finest solo album by a country mile, it also transcends many of Pinback's most canonic moments. It has the hooks and heart that he is famous for, with a refined focus not seen in Crow's other projects.

Drift, The
(rmxs) (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 24TH)
PS, US Following the 2005 release of their debut album, "Noumena," THE DRIFT set out to tour relentlessly in support of the album. Two years later, the band is still on tour, and to keep up we're rolling out a limited edition 12" compiling two side-long remixes from FOUR TET and SYBARITE. Side A is a nine-minute jazz exploration, launching The Drift's spacious, atmospheric compositions into deserted, zero-gravity territory. Four Tet's remix is a stone cold classic, rich in the virtues of patience and the payoff. Side B, conversely, is a dense, rhythmic reworking of "Noumena's" most immediately accessible track, "Invisible Cities." Sybarite gets to the point quick, and fleshes out the deliriously funky details over the course of its emphatic 11-minute runtime. This 12" is strictly limited to 1,000 copies. Each copy is housed in a beautiful full-color chipboard jacket, and has been individually assembled by the tireless hands of the TEMPORARY RESIDENCE staff.

Durutti Column
Idiot Savants (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 17TH)
PS, UK The Durutti Column follow-up 2006's Keep Breathing with a brand new album, Idiot Savants. Written and played by Vini Reilly, with drums and percussion from the Guru himself, Bruce Mitchell. The Durutti Column emerged from the late 70s Manchester punk scene and has remained one of the most intriguing, enigmatic (and arguably under appreciated) acts in the country. The band name is derived from a 60s anarchist movement. - an anarchist group in Europe who published a book with a sandpaper cover so that it would destroy all the other books on the shelves. He borrowed the practice of using sandpaper as a packaging medium, until record shops forced him to stop, fed up of the stock surrounding the Durutti Column being destroyed. Despite the tremendous critical acclaim that greeted his music, Vini Reilly seldom performed live during the early 1980s. The days of gigging with Joy Division were over and Vini became a virtual recluse. However his reputation grew and by the 90s Durutti Column's legendary status made them a cult attraction all over the world, a position they maintain to this day.

Fine Arts Showcase, The
Sings Rough Bunnies (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 2007)
PS, SWEDEN Third album from Gustaf Kjellvander's Fine Arts Showcase, and the follow-up to his 110% brilliant. The short version: TFAS covers 11 song by Swedish cult-twee-punk-lofi duo The Rough Bunnies. Highly recommended. The long version: This is an album of many stories. Gustaf Kjellvander and his friends in The Fine Arts Showcase have made a covers album, entirely based on songs from the Swedish, rather unknown, jangly, lo-fi band Rough Bunnies. Why is that? Let's make Gustaf himself explain: "I was first introduced to Anna Vermina and her cousin Frida, the founding members of Rough Bunnies and Inside Riot, through mutual friends. Frida gave me a CD-R just days before they were about to move to Berlin. About six months later I was looking for someone to rent my spare room. I bumped into Frida by chance, who told me she had moved back from Berlin to Malmö and needed a place to stay - so she moved in. I was already smitten by Inside Riot at this time, and when Frida played me the songs they had recorded in Berlin, along with the Rough Bunnies record C-sides, it blew me away. I played it to everyone who came over to my house. They became an obsession that carries on to this day. I knew I wanted the Fine Arts Showcase to cover their songs. The problem was that with a catalogue of songs as amazing as theirs it was hard to pick just one, so I came up with the idea that we should do an entire record instead (in the Merle Haggard sings Jimmy Rodgers tradition). And here it is: a musical love letter to two of my favorite songwriters, a celebration of the pop geniuses of the Vermina family. Rough Bunnies (and their twin group Inside Riot) have inspired me more than any other band this side of the millennium and this record is my way of thanking them. Rough Bunnies Saved My Life" - Gustaf Kjellvander

Frank, Bob & Murry, John
The Gun Play EP (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 17TH)
PS, UK "The Gunplay EP", released in Europe on Decor Records in May 2007 during Bob Frank and John Murry's month-long tour there in support of "World Without End", was originally meant to be recorded as a supplement to the full length album mentioned previously. Instead, this "EP", if a ten-song record can truly be called an EP, is filled with the work of the same musicians who participated in the recording of "World Without End" and was once again produced and recorded by Tim Mooney of American Music Club. "The Gunplay EP" resurrects 4 old murder ballads from stagnation and gives them back their original lyrics, sanitized to suit broader audiences through the years. In addition, it includes the newly-penned "Gary Gilmore, 1977", written by Bob and John specifically for this EP. It also includes two live recordings, both songs from "World Without End": "Joaquin Murietta, 1853" and "Boss Weatherford, 1933". "..and then they immediately record a stunning EP in addition. The work of Frank and Murry is filled with ferocity and brilliance." -- Allan Jones, UNCUT Magazine "..beautifully dark and depressing. This is sure to become an underground hit." --Whitney Matheson, USA Today "4/5 Stars" --Joe Breen, The Irish Times "Oppressive, claustrophobic, and extraordinary. Just make sure you listen with the lights on." --Brian Denny, Morning Star, Britain.

Garland, David
Noise in You (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 24TH)
PS, US "Noise In You" is an album of gorgeous music about noisy emotions: our desires and distractions, anxieties and passions, love and loss, and the living hum of our bodies. It is DAVID GARLAND'S 8th album since entering New York City's downtown scene in the 1980s, and it's the first to receive the wide distribution and attention his music deserves. Garland is a multi-instrumentalist currently exploring the sumptuous jangle of a 12-string guitar; he sings with a voice that's deep, honest, and intimate. "Noise In You" is unclassifiable: pop music that's both experimental and accessible, and is rich with intricate layered harmonies and startling colors and textures. It features the beautiful, sometimes mystical voices of a younger generation of musicians -- SUFJAN STEVENS, MIRA ROMANTSCHUK (of MI AND L'AU), DIANE CLUCK, VIKING MOSES, and DAVID DEPORIS -- together with guitars, flute, piano, clarinet, sarode, oboe, and more. Noise In You unfolds into a wondrous, subtly interconnected song cycle that sweeps you up in its imaginativeness, drama, and sensual pleasure.

Green Pajamas, The
Box of Secrets: Northern Gothic 2 (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 31ST)
PS, US New album of psychedelic pop from Seattle veterans The Green Pajamas, mining childhood nostalgia on their new album... Box Of Secrets is a conceptual album, a follow up if you will to 'Northern Gothic' (Camera Obscura, 2002), with three intertwining themes running through it: local legends, characters, and personal mythology. Inspired less by arcane literature and more by The Green Pajamas three songwriters' own childhood experiences: 70's TV movies dealing with gothic themes of murder, secrets, the supernatural; along with small town life in the Pacific Northwest, the vague setting for many of the songs is the Washington coast. The mostly fictional stories enclosed within this 'Box of Secrets' evoke a shared memory or that spooky sweet nostalgia, whether lived or not. Though the subject matter is dark, the music and songs themselves promise to be a bit more rocking and psychedelic, moreso than their last true studio album '21st Century Séance', which explored more mellow moods... CITY BEAT REVIEW: "File the Green Pajamas under 'the best band you've never heard'. The Seattle collective, led by Pop mastermind Jeff Kelly, routinely releases jaw-dropping albums that melt in the ear like a lysergic caramel from the Sgt. Pepper chocolate sampler."
