Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

The 1900s "Medium High EP" Mini-CD ON SALE: $5.00 (Parasol)
Medium High, the 28-minute new mini-album from Chicago psych-pop troupe The 1900s, is a collection of outtakes, b-sides and radical re-imaginings. Darker, less poppy and looser than previous releases, the mix of songs was recorded at various times, places and with various people, and manages to form a surprisingly cohesive and unique addition to the 1900s catalog. The majority of these songs were written long before the debut EP, Plume Delivery, was ever released. With a couple rosters shake-ups since then and now, Medium High finds the band purging its sometimes dark past – making way for a new direction and new album, which they are currently in the process of recording. Accordingly, the songs deal with characters who find themselves in uncertain, in-between moments in their lives. Medium High again finds The 1900s proving to never be in short supply of surprise. Check out the release page for more info, sound samples, links to digital downloads, etc.

Wavves "S-T" LP $13.00 (Woodsist)
Primordially lo-fi, So Cal fuzz-pop and acid-punk that is so incredibly wanton and wooly that it becomes otherworldly, or you become weightless, or grow fur and claws, or something! Intoxicating naivety and alarming production values cram this big square peg into a small round hole somewhere between Times New Viking, The Beach Boys, and, fuck it, Flying Saucer Attack.

Blank Dogs
The Fields
PS, US "Blank Dogs are actually singular: it's the insanely prolific one-man Brooklyn-based band of Mr. Blank Dog. We don't know too much about the biography of the guy behind the bedroom new-wave pop/punk and he's usually covering his face with masks or bedspreads, but that's fine. The aura of anonymity allows you to focus on the sounds -- and, really, he might be releasing a ton of things, but there's definitely a higher jam-to-crap ratio. It's like Joy Division vocal lines with The Cure's synth and guitar melodies filtered through ancient submerged keyboards and eroded recording equipment. And that voice? All the feedback in the world can't hide his knack for melody. Blank Dogs have been making plenty of rumbles in the noisier and more secretive outposts of the underground (half his discography's sold out), but Troubleman Unlimited's just repressed his very recommended full-length On Two Sides (on yellow vinyl in an edition of 500) and In The Red's releasing a 20-song double LP (or single CD) called Under And Under . It's all new material. He's also playing his first shows in NYC, so if you want to take a peek, you can. All this to say: seems like Blank Dogs is on his way out of the basement." --Stereogum

Bob Corn/Larry Yes
Love Calls
PS, US An international collaboration of artists and labels. A 7" vinyl memento released between North Pole Records (American) and Fooltribe Dischi (Italian). This sweet collaboration of native Oregonian music / love channeler, Larry Yes, and Italian farmer / wanderer, Tiziano Sgarbi, aka Bob Corn. Each artist performs an original song and then covers a song by the other. Bob Corn sings in poignant accented english with an acoustic guitar, soft beats, and, songs of longing, memory, and love. His grammar may be incorrect but his observations are unique descriptions of transatlantic truths. Larry Yes continues the strumming as well as bringing swooning horns and suitcase drums along for some moments of stoned wandering. LIMITED to 500 copies in letterpress covers.

Bogner, Ursula
Recordings: 1969-1988
PS, US Debut release on JAN JELINEK's label FAITICHE: a collection of unheard electronic experiments from an unlikely source. URSULA BOGNER was a pharmacist, wife & mother, & she was obsessed w/ electronic music - an obsession that drove her to build her own studio for extensive recording & experimentation. Throughout her early 20s, she followed activities of Cologne-based Studio Für Elektronische Musik, attended seminars, explored musique concrète &, later on, shared her children's enthusiasm for British new wave pop. The whole time she created here own music at home, never made public until now. Nearly everything here is taken straight from the original reels. Covering a fairly short period of her creative career, this conveys a peculiar coherence in both form & content. A coherence that reflects her accessible, rhythmic & sometimes even "poppy" side. An exhilarating find from a truly undiscovered electronic artist.

Bookish, Simon
Everything/Everything
PS, US Vinyl Version! An unpredictable and dramatic "big band song cycle about science and information", Everything/Everything is a new departure for Simon Bookish, being his first album for TOMLAB. Additionally, whilst previous Simon Bookish releases have been informed by the sounds of digital synthesizers, Everything/Everything does away with them entirely to focus on live instruments. Scored for an ensemble dominated by saxophones, brass, piano, harp and Far sa organ, it features luminaries from both the jazz and experimental classical music scenes. Whilst this is almost certainly his most pop oriented release to date, Everything/Everything, as it's name suggests, nds room for moments of racing Philip Glass minimalism, lop-sided disco, expressionist cabaret, and even an eery ambient interlude. Lyrically, the album's concept is "the - good of information" in our modern age, taking in chemistry and ecology, language and art, sometimes surreal, sometimes humorous, sometimes provocative, a weird blur of fact and action, delivered in Bookish's distinctive English eccentric vocal. It's only natural that Simon Bookish would want to tackle this chaos of stuff, since 'Simon Bookish' is the pseudonym of London-based composer Leo Chadburn, whose diverse recent work has included everything from sound-art installations in Bregenz, Austria, improvisation and guest spots with Leafcutter John and Polar Bear's Seb Rochford, and computer music for contemporary dance at the Royal Opera House to an acclaimed appearance with the National Theatre as "The Singer" in Brecht's "Caucasian Chalk Circle".

PS, PORTUGAL Chico Magnetic Band's eponymous album, released by French Vogue subsidiary Box Office label in 1971, defines the term 'heavy Psychedelia.' These bunch of freaks, lead by Algerian born Mahmoud 'Chico' Ayari were clearly influenced by the Jimi Hendrix Experience but somehow they created a song of their own: violent, trashy, stoned as hell heavy psych featuring demented vocals, furious guitars, loud rhythm section and mindblowing studio effects including phasing, backward tapes, weird and groovy electronics. Eight killer tracks including their insane fuzzed-out deconstruction of Hendrix's 'Crosstown Traffic' and cult classics like 'Pop Pull Hair,' 'Explosion,' 'Pop Orbit.' PS, US The 1st full-length release from the collaborative project of Berlin producers/DJs CHRIS DE LUCA (ex-Funstorung) & PHON.O - together called CLP. Here their instrumental-tracks are bombarded by underground rappers from the U.S. & South-Africa. The result is an explosive mixture of styles - from dirty techno to ghetto beats. Truly supercontinental, indeed. Feat. guests incl.: TUNDE OLANIRAN, YO! MAJESTY, KOVAS, MOCHIPET & HUSTLE HEADS, ZION I & DATA MC, RAYZAFLO, many more!

Cola Jet Set
Contando Historias
PS, SPAIN First COLA JET SET album, a collection of 12 classic guitar n' drum pop rubies. Superbly produced by Guille Milkyway (LA CASA AZUL), main singer here in "Nuba". Born of some ashes of LOS FRESONES REBELDES (Spanish one hit wonders in 1997) they finally top their Pop Crusade with a solid and mature recording. COLA JET SET are a melting pot of the "B sound": BEATLES, BEACH BOYS, BYRDS, Brill Building, Brigitte Bardot, BLONDIE, you name it! Then add a little Soul touch Southern and Northern, and play all this with that New Wave fresh approach. Not much noticed when it came out in 2004, since their "comeback" in 2007 (playing all over Spain and at Liverpool's International Pop Overthrow) is almost sold out.

Dinky
May Be Later
PS, GERMANY This is Dinky's third album and her first full-length release on Vakant, after the Move In EP (VA 020EP). Dinky has brought with her a welcome infusion of freshness and bloom to the otherwise dank locker room. May Be Later, like the artist, is the prototypical combination of beauty and brawn. Dinky's long journey began in her native Chile, growing up playing piano and experimenting with modern dance and choreography. As a teen, she listened to artists as diverse as Brian Eno to Prince, before finding electronic music from Plastikman, Aphex Twin, and Carl Craig in the mid-'90s. She made lifelong connections in the Santiago scene with Ricardo Villalobos, Dandy Jack, and Luciano, and was soon sharing stages with them. In the late '90s, Dinky moved from Santiago to New York City to join the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance and was also introduced to American house, the evolution of techno, and parties like Body and Soul, NASA raves, and Twilo. Soon, at 23 and armed only with an MPC 2000, her original productions began. Dancing during the day, she was making a name for herself as a DJ by night, eventually hosting regular underground parties with Magda until she was forced to leave the States for Berlin due to post-9/11 visa restrictions. With her new home came chart-topping productions, mega-club residencies, live performances, and international recognition. May Be Later bridges sound and mood from the summery and sublime to the dark and throbbing. While "Mars Cello" floats and warms, "Burdelia" chugs somewhere between Chicago and early NYC house. "Fade Me In" zips along with furious kink and dubious vox by Dinky's longtime friend Jorge González. "Seven 2 Seven," when aimed at 8am Berlin ravers, massive freakouts ensue. "She Is Moving" features minimal vocalist extraordinaire Big Bully, attaining a vital equilibrium of naughty and nice. The album closes with "Mind," an electronic fusion -- moving, looming, eerie, and reassuring. This album shows Alejandra Iglesias' development, exposing the paths, connections and influences that brought her here. The beach, NYC underground in all its flavors, Berlin, the stage, Detroit, electronic waves from all directions, Chicago, mega-clubs... it's all here and it's all her own.

DM Stith
Curtain Speech
PS, US The music calls to mind contemporaries Antony & the Johnsons, Grizzly Bear, & sometimes the explosiveness of Animal Collective. However, a handful of other influences cloud the comparison as hints of the dissonance of Sonic Youth & Henryk Gorecki, expressive vocal techniques of Caetano Veloso & Mary Margaret O'Hara, & the romance & textures of Benjamin Britten & Edward Elgar underpin even the simplest of gestures. Stith's delicate yet confident voice sits amongst lush arrangements of piano, guitar, strings, electronics, choir, percussion, & a penny whistle or two.

Dylan, Jakob
Seeing Things
US, PS When the songwriter from a songwriter-driven band steps out on his own the question always hangs in the air: did he need to forsake his band in order to cut this set of songs? In the case of Seeing Things, the first album Jakob Dylan has released outside of the confines of the Wallflowers, he most certainly did. Quiet, reflective, based almost entirely on acoustic guitars, Seeing Things is intimate in a way the road-ready Wallflowers never were, although the tunes are as sturdy and plainspoken as Dylan's songs for the band. Indeed, there's always been a modesty at the core of his writing, so he benefits greatly from this humble setting, masterminded -- as so many big-budget down to basics departures are in the 2000s -- by Rick Rubin, known for his stripped-down reinventions of Johnny Cash and Neil Diamond. Seeing Things isn't nearly as spare as American Recordings or 12 Songs; anchored on acoustics though he may be, Dylan isn't on his own, as bass, harmony vocals, and keyboards are gently woven into the fabric. This gives the music warmth, but the simplicity of the setting helps focus on Dylan's unassuming, well-crafted songs, songs where melodies are gently insinuating and words are so carefully sculpted it's easy to overlook how nicely he turns a phrase. Like many of his peers, Dylan is casting a wary eye on a war-ridden new millennium, but these aren't protest songs, they work on an emotional level and are appropriately balanced with lighter moments, like the lazy shuffle of "All Day and All Night." All through his career, Jakob Dylan has never pushed too hard; he simply lays it out there, so he's uncommonly suited to Rubin's unadorned production. In Rubin's hands, Seeing Things plays like a songwriter playing his newest songs in your living room -- a seductive feeling that no Wallflowers record ever captured, which is an excellent reason for Dylan to step out on his own. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Fennesz, Christian
June
PS, US th installment in the Guitar Series Vol. 3 & 4. As much as any artist, he is responsible for establishing the laptop computer as both a compositional tool & concert instrument. Subsuming electro-acoustic strategies into a bedrock of pop, he terraforms vast new worlds of sound, within which both AMM & the Beach Boys can cozily coexist. His Guitar Series contribution, is a suitably lush transformation, as electric guitars flow into deep streams of sound.

Flaherty, Paul
Aria Nativa
PS, US "Aria Nativa" is more than PAUL FLAHERTY'S third solo saxophone album; it merges rhapsodic avant garde music, patriotic dream verse, and mortality into a frighteningly pure work of audio, visual and literary sledge. Recorded during a pair of 2007 performances, its four pieces capture lifeblood in stunning detail from foot stomps to gut hollers and crowd roars as Flaherty's free power blues dips into the well of wretchedness and raises with fists of mirth. It's the sorta record that splays naked the artist for all: equal parts wise ass and universal vision. From his early 1970s woodshedding through a dozen plus albums each with drum buddies Randall Colburne and Chris Corsano, and collaborators Bill Nace, Wally Shoup and Sunburned Man of the Hand, Flaherty remains a total wildcat - on and off the alto/tenor horns. For this LP his massive tonal craft is equally matched by Ken Hill's gorgeous cover shot of a snow blown grave and "No More America" - Ken DelPonte's epic poem that spans nearly five decades and fills the back jacket, framing the atmosphere the music was recorded under. Each 500 copies contain a download coupon for MP3 version of the album that includes a bonus track of "No More America" read by the author.

Fleischmann, B.
Angst Is Not A Weltanschauung
PS, GERMANY Morr Music releases another record by their old Viennese friend B. Fleischmann. Two genuine and touching farewell songs are the beacons of light on this record, and, even more than The Humbucking Coil, Angst Is Not A Weltanschauung! has made its way from sound to songwriting. Still the sounds come tumbling out of the hard disk and one can hear fingers screwing on regulators. And yet these nine tracks are of a distinct corporeity and spatiality; for instance, when Marilies Jagsch or Sweet William Van Ghost lend their voices for two wonderful moments each. The productive feedback between Vienna and Berlin, between Bernhard Fleischmann and Thomas Morr started with Pop Loops For Breakfast nine years ago. With Angst Is Not A Weltanschauung!, Bernhard Fleischmann arrives at a carefully-set wooden table, arranged in a warm and glowing sunset. The aromas are darker and more wholehearted now. The groove box of former times has vanished almost entirely -- only within the congenial embrace of Bernhard Fleischmann's "Phones & Machine" (The Humbucking Coil) and Daniel Johnston's "King Kong" can it still be traced. Regardless of the change in tune, these sounds won't pass you by -- they swing on to the next morning, stroll through the streets with you, drift as an echo from the houses' walls; sometimes as a slow dub, sometimes as an intimate ballad. These are sounds that tumble and dance.

Guild League, The
Speak Up
PS, US EXCLUSIVE. Long-awaited third album from Australian pop collective The Guild League, comprised of frontman Tali White (also of The Lucksmiths), lead-cellist/bassist Cressida Griffith, sax prodigy Gus Rigby, drummer about town Phil Collings, trumpet from Roger Clark, and guitar magic from Basic Shape's Gerry Eeman. The follow-up to the celebrated 'Inner North' album in 2004, new album 'Speak Up' is the sound of a band full of optimism and new ideas. There's a little bit for everyone, from the insanely catchy guitar pop of 'Suit Fits' and 'If Not Now...' to ska-tinged swingers 'Mouse vs. Mountain' and 'Where's The Colour?' to stunningly beautiful and poignant vocal showcases 'Dead Hour' and 'Incandescent.' The album mixes guitars with strings, keyboards, bursts of trumpet and saxophone, wonderful female backing vocals, and handclaps, all complemented by Tali's crystal clear and perfectly pitched vocals. Imagine the younger brothers of Australia's legendary Summershine Records roster (The Rainyard, The Sugargliders, Tender Engines) mixed with early 80s British pop staples (The Jam, Madness) and you're nearly there. A refreshingly diverse and confident set from a band that only gets better with time.

Hardin, Tim
1
PS, US HARDIN's 1st album, originally released in 1966, is an accidental classic. The album is comprised of a number of demos, & feat. string arrangements on many tunes that the artist himself knew nothing about. Yet, despite this the album remains a folk-rock-blues classic of the highest order. Though his work is often known more through other artists' interpretations of his songs, his own versions are almost always superior, incl. such classic songs here as "Reason to Believe," "Don't Make Promises," & "Misty Roses." Reissued on CD in the US for the 1st time ever.

Hermit Crabs, The
Correspondence Course
PS, US Splendid new EP from heralded Scottish band The Hermit Crabs! Following impressive debut single 'Feel Good Factor' and album 'Saw You Dancing' last year, the Glasgow band spent a year sharpening its live set with shows across the UK plus an appearance at the New York City popfest. The four new songs on this EP accentuate the rich instrumentation present on earlier recordings with a diverse mix of acoustic and electric guitars occasionally embellished with distortion and present a more upbeat, poppy side to their sound. Lead track 'About You Before' is a swinging number about summer relationships that boasts melodic vocals, nice orchestration, a soaring chorus and great bursts of percussion. 'Correspondence Course', driven by superb violin arrangements and distorted guitar bits, is another tale about the china girl mentioned on their debut single. 'Turn The Clock Back' is a beautifully pensive one about a breakup and the little things you miss when you're not going out with someone, while 'I Don't Know How' is a classic case of saving the best for lastan upbeat hit with a sixties vibe, surf guitars and a great singalong chorus. It'll even have the indie hipsters dancing by the end so don't fight it, feel it! Well written and perfectly produced, 'Correspondence Course' pops and crackles in all the right places and is a fantastic step forward for the band. Limited to 1000 copies in custom minijacket sleeve.

Holland, Jolie
The Living And The Dead
PS, US On her three previous offerings, Jolie Holland mined the deep well of Americana, from classic pre-war blues and country sources to the feel of speakeasy-era popular and parlor songs and originals that echoed all of the above while being caught in the whirlwind restlessness of millennium-edge America. Her songs and instrumentation were like lovers; they represented the iconic places they held in her life as an artist. The Living and the Dead offers a different side of Holland. Where her own sometimes loose and ranging compositions were influenced by those early styles to the point of poetic obsession, the songs here reflect a tighter, more focused musical view while ratcheting up their emotional intensity. Perhaps this is because parts of it were recorded in various cities such as Portland and Brooklyn, with guests who include Marc Ribot, M. Ward, Colin Stetson, Kenny Wollesen, and Jim White; they play alongside her regular collaborators such as engineer, multi-instrumentalist, and co-producer Shahzad Ismaily and drummer Rachel Blumberg. Production aside, it's the songs that reflect the greatest change here, beginning with the opener "Mexico City," where beat generation heroes Jack Kerouac, wife Edie Parker, and Joan Vollmer (the wife of William S. Burroughs whom he accidentally shot and killed in the infamous "William Tell" incident) lay across the protagonist's bed as she strums through a jangly rock tune and asks: "What's that black smoke rising, Jack? Is the world on fire? What's that distant singing? Is it a heavenly choir of the living and the dead?" "Corrido por Buddy" is a gentle yet harrowing memorial narrative about a man she barely knew who went from "beautiful young man on the streets of Austin," to "...a ghost-faced junkie on the streets of New Orleans..." Beginning with strummed electric guitars, drums kick up the emotional verve in the tune though Holland's voice remains relaxed in its drawling delivery. But she implicates herself as culpable too, and wishes she'd not been so shy with this man who treated her with kindness and compassion in her own needy circumstances. She asks with devastating honesty: "What if they only gave you love when you lied? Everything minus one is everything..." The songs could end right here, but Holland is unflinching as the album tenses up even more with "Palmyra," a meditation on the frailty of human relationships and failings of love. Ribot's guitar work here is biting, warm, and razor-wire sharp, contrasting itself with Holland's steely yet world-weary voice. All of these songs reflect the shortcomings of human beings dealing with one another in an honest, intimate, dependable way, and how it's sometimes impossible to endure -- as one is both victim and perpetrator. There are two covers on this set also: the eerie, stripped, disembodied reading of the traditional "Love Henry," (which wouldn't seem out of place on a Tom Waits record), and the set-ending standard within a standard, "Enjoy Yourself," a late-night back porch reading. But even these songs are haunted by something almost dreadful on Holland's shoulder, making her look back at the road in sorrow, and at the present with the kind of resignation and acceptance that true regret brings. Though her Americana roots still shine through in patches, for The Living and the Dead they are stretched to the breaking point. This is a spooky yet beautiful offering by one of our best musical poets; a true outsider trying to come in from the cold. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide

HTRK
Ha/Panties (Live
PS, UK A mysterious three-piece from Melbourne, HTRK (pronounced "Hate Rock") exercise sublime tension and beauty, calling to mind David Lynch, The Birthday Party and Pita. "Ha" is the lead song off their forthcoming album, a 21st century tribal disco lament that signals the shape of things to come. "Panties" is a visceral outpouring recorded live in Belfast at the end of their 2007 European tour supporting the Liars.

Human Greed
Black Hill: Midnight At The Blighted Star
PS, UK This is the third release from the UK's finest exponents of melancholic experimentalism, Human Greed. In addition to the band's core membership of founder Michael Begg and his main collaborator Deryk Thomas, Black Hill: Midnight At The Blighted Star features well-poised contributions from special guests Julia Kent (Antony & the Johnsons, Blind Cave Salamander), Fabrizio Palumbo (Larsen, Blind Cave Salamander), David Tibet (Current 93) and Clodagh Simonds (Fovea Hex, Mellow Candle). Although in many ways far gentler than previous Human Greed albums, Black Hill packs a significant punch. Part nightmare train journey to a bruised and foreboding underworld, part voyage beyond the alluring tails of shooting stars to an aching void of longing, this album may prove to be the band's sullen masterpiece. Processed electronics, treated acoustic and electric instruments and numerous field recordings are eloquently arranged to present a composition as satisfying in its formal arrangement as it is breathtaking in its emotional impact. Although possessed with a very individual sound, Human Greed's sounding notes may draw comparisons to the timeless, stretched melancholia of Stars Of The Lid, Black Light District-era Coil, Nurse With Wound's less whimsical moments, William Basinski's evocations of lost time and romantic despair and even Brian Eno's ambient work. None of this, of course, accounts for the ever-present, unsettling air of cruelty and, occasionally, latent violence, that adds a singularly dark note to their work.

Jazzfinger/Culver/Fordell Research Unit
Killed In A Clear Sky/Octodog
PS, UK Split LP featuring heavy-hitting UK bleak dudes. The A-side is Jazzfinger's 'Killed In A Clear Sky,' one solid slab of fucked-up tapped guitar drone and a distant, eerie whir, like a storm of electric feedback, slashes and cuts. Far out, and a real killer -- 20 odd minutes to make you lull out. The B-side is a collaboration between Culver and Fordell Research Unit, another side-long piece that starts off with some bassed-up doom chugs and slogs that sound like fucking something that could be set down by some Southern Lord brutality, but then it punches you in the face with its distorted, churning hell. Limited to 275 white label LPs in black sleeves with hideously brutal artwork by French.

PS, US This combines the music created by MIRAH & SPECTRATONE INTERNATIONAL w/the stop motion films created by BRITTA JOHNSON to animate the live performance that first debuted at the Seattle International Children's Festival in May 2007. The music is full, subtle, & meticulously rendered, moving easily among a wide range of influences, from early music to folk to psychedelia. Johnson has created luminous stop-motion animated films for each of the songs. Kirkegaard, Jacob
Labyrinthitis
PS, UK This is Jacob Kirkegaard's third album for Touch, after Eldfjall (2005) and 4 Rooms (2006). Born in Denmark, now living and working in Germany, Labyrinthitis was commissioned by Medical Museion in Copenhagen, summer 2007, and was first presented at the international conference "Art and Biomedicine: Beyond the Body." Jacob Kirkegaard has turned his ears inwards: His new work Labyrinthitis is an interactive sound piece that consists entirely of sounds generated in the artist's auditory organs -- and will cause audible responses in those of the audience. Labyrinthitis relies on a principle employed both in medical science and musical practice: When two frequencies at a certain ratio are played into the ear, additional vibrations in the inner ear will produce a third frequency. This frequency is generated by the ear itself: a so-called "distortion product otoacoustic emission" (DPOAE), also referred to in musicology as "Tartini tone." By arranging the tones from his ears in a composition and playing them to an audience, the artist evokes further distortive effects in the ears of his listeners. At first, each new tone can only be perceived "intersubjectively": inside the head of each one in the audience. Kirkegaard artificially reproduces this tone and introduces it, "objectively," into his composition. When combined with another distorting frequency, it will create another tone -- until, step-by-step, a pattern of descending tonal structure emerges whose spiral form mirrors the composition of resonant spectra in the human cochlea. Paradoxical as it may sound: we can listen to our own ears. The human hearing organ -- still often perceived as a passive unidirectional medium -- does not only receive sounds from the outside, it also generates its own sound from within itself. As a matter of fact, it can even be "played on" just like an acoustic instrument.

If you aren't instantly in love the second this hits your stereo, I'm afraid there isn't a fun bone in your body or a human heart in your chest. These people have this to say about this... THE L.A. Oliveros, Pauline
Four Electronic Pieces 1959-1966
PS, BELGIUM Sub Rosa presents Pauline Oliveros' early and definitive tape and electronic music of the late fifties and sixties -- all released for the first time ever! Born in Texas in 1932, Pauline Oliveros is more than ever an important American composer. Her accomplishments speak to an array of disciplines: her pieces for accordion; the creation of the Deep Listening Institute, a center dedicated to fostering artistic creativity through workshops, performances, and new technologies; her approach to improvisation in relation to meditation; and her numerous and varied collaborations with, among others, John Cage, Morton Subotnick, Terry Riley, Sonic Youth, Erold and Andrew Deutsch. Each piece on this release exemplifies her systematic exploration of electronic sounds, which was fundamental to this period. "Mnemonics" prefigures her meditative and breathing pieces. "V of IV" structures sound as noise. "Time Perspectives" is among her first variations on silence. Finally, "Once Again" develops a wild energy that out-strips itself, a frenzy the likes of which is hard to find even to this day. As Oliveros explains, the detailed methodology behind her work offers a unique inquiry into the process of artistic invention itself. "My work with electronic music began in 1959. My first tape piece was an ambitious four channel work called 'Time Perspectives.' The piece was made by recording small sounds from objects resonated on a wooden wall and changing the tape speed. I used cardboard tubes as filters by inserting the mic into the tube and recording sources through the tubes. I used my bath tub as a reverberation chamber. Sections of the piece were improvised and then subjected to speed changes. When the San Francisco Tape Music Center was established together with Ramon Sender and Morton Subotnik there was a pool of equipment to use and I began to work with electronic sound. Rather than cut and splice small pieces of tape together to make a composition I chose to work in real time. I used two tape machines with the tape running across both machines to make a delay system. I used two or more oscillators at high frequencies to produce different tones. These tones would also interact with the bias frequencies of the tape recorders. I would play the oscillators into the tape recorders improvising my way through the piece. My system of composing in this manner was my own invention." --Pauline Oliveros

Pallers
Humdrum
PS, SWEDEN Labrador proudly present Swedens newest band - Pallers. "Humdrum was produced in Spain with a view over over the Mediterranean. During one week of constant sunshine they created the darkest and finest electronica we've heard in a long time. This is dance music for the lazy, the blazers and for the slightly depressed "When creating we pour everything out that has been collected in the head during decades of intense listening. One leg is always standing in the green grass of pop while the other leg is out on its own, wandering between places such as dance floors, sandy beaches, cold concrete and a weightless existence in a bed or a hammock." PALLERS the band's musical visions are clearly reflected in the music and after each listening new details appears. Endless layers of sounds come together, travel around the soundscapes and fades in- and out of the songs. Desolate choirs floats by, dark arpeggio-synthezisers are constantly changing shape while swirls of treble-ish percussion and echoing guitar figures sounds as if the sun was trying to break through thick clouds. The working process: 1. Record vocals, 2. Upload vocals to the other member, 3. Other member builds the song, 4. Members leave the country, 5. Pallers return home with the finalized record. PRESS: "The melodies are as vibrant as you'd expect from this indie-pop-oriented label, but there's a lot to admire in the production, too, from little details like the rattling percussion or murmured half-words at the intro, to the shuffling snares on the verses. "PITCHFORK "...lush colours and arms without muscles come to mind, when you're listening to 'humdrum'. Androgyny galore. it's a brilliant track." DISCODUST "Dark and dreamy throughout, Humdrum explores a territory between Junior Boys and the more atmospheric moments of M83." HYPERBOLE "Sweden's famous indie label Labrador is blessing us with yet more of this kind of dreamy dance music by releasing the debut EP from Pallers on December 3rd." BIZARRELOVETRIANGLES "There's a haunting pulse of melodrama throughout and we're pretty sure it's going to consume you for the minutes you listen to it. You'll press repeat for sure. " THE CULTURE OF ME "Latenight beach jam, perfect for a chilly October evening..." GROOVE COOKIE "Continuing my current run of Nordic and Swedish music I've found a new love, Pallers." Pop Levi
Never Never Love
PS, US 2008 sophomore album from this Pop (no pun intended) singer/songwriter and former Ladytron member, probably the only contemporary musician in the world beloved of both Jarvis Cocker and Noel Gallagher. Recorded entirely in Hollywood at Quincy Jones' old studio, Westlake, where both Thriller & Off The Wall were laid down, Mr. Levi has returned with an album about the madness of love - 100% autobiographical, 100% clever, 100% dumb, 100% unique. And that's giving 400% already. From transitional rockers like 'Wannamama' and 'Oh God,' Pop spreads his wings, relying on a production flare, which makes the record feel fresh and slick as well as charmingly hi-lo-fi. 'Never Never Love' shows that while he hasn't abandoned the dynamics of the Rock group he has also been steeping himself in contemporary R&B. Flamboyant, utterly self-confident, completely his own man and so uninterested in the back and forth of fashion that everything he makes is an instant classic, Pop Levi is in the building. Bow down and give thanks.

Rebel, Miss Lana
All I Need
PS, US Real-deal American country music has its roots in the anti-government encampments of born-disaffected Scots Irish settlers in Appalachian America. Those dark hills & hollers are where folks immigrated in order to get away, to not participate in the sorts of activities that most folks thought they should as part of civilization. When these folks picked up instruments the stories & poems of loss, freedom, often death & once in a while hope began to flow like corn whiskey from an earthenware jug. In that way, we daresay real country's more punk than punk. LANA REBEL & her band continue in that authentic tradition of Spartan, Appalachian/Western country, w/out the political endorsements (real county's as apolitical as you can get), dumb hooks or the need to participate in a genre fronted by a qualifying adjective ("new", "alt" or otherwise). Get ready to have some stories told to you. 'All I Need' will get tears in your Coors, & a lump in your throat.

Scene Is Now, The
Tonight We Ride
PS, AUSTRALIA Between the years 1984 and 1988, The Scene Is Now released three magnificent albums which have been out of print for a dog's age and have never seen the light of day on compact disk -- until now. This exclusive Lexicon Devil CD reissue of the band's third album, Tonight We Ride, has been fully remastered from original tapes by the band. Some folks compared them to the Red Krayola or Pere Ubu, some to SST outfits such as the Meat Puppets and Slovenly, and some people even hail them as the world's finest no wave jug band. The Scene Is Now (TSIN) were formed at the dawn of the 1980s by Philip Dray and Chris Nelson, a band born from the ashes of no wave trio Information (the third partner of that outfit being Rick Brown). The beauty of TSIN lies in their deceptive simplicity. What at first appears to be a straightforward, rootsy rock tune twists and turns throughout its lifespan into something completely different, keyboard lines and guitar licks darting out to and fro and seemingly pulling in different directions. The Scene Is Now remain -- as indeed they still exist -- one of the great post-Beefheart harmolodic American pop bands. Influenced equally by the ragged avant-folk sounds of the Holy Modal Rounders and the Fugs, the screech of DNA and Mars, and the traditional Americana of Bob Wills and Hoagy Carmichael, TSIN instantly set themselves apart from the pack. If you like the music of their fans -- Sonic Youth and Yo La Tengo (who covered an old TSIN track on their Fakebook LP) -- the music of their peers -- Mofungo, Pere Ubu, dBs, Fish & Roses, The Feelies -- or the sounds of their acknowledged influences -- Sun Ra, Red Krayola, Minutemen -- you'll love the music of The Scene Is Now. Their music was an indefinable mixture of the old and new, the impenetrable and the accessible and the weird and wonderful. Certainly the most accessible of the three, this album features the added talents of ex-dBs Will Rigby and Pere Ubu wunderkind Tony Maimone, expanding the TSIN clan to a family of six. Playing it 20 years after its original release, it still stands tall as one of the great, virtually unknown albums from 1980s underground America.

Shackleton/Appleblim/Peverelist
Soundboy's Gravestone Gets Desecrated By Vandals
PS, UK The final chapter in the Skull Disco story has arrived, in the shape of a 2CD compilation, Soundboy's Gravestone Gets Desecrated By Vandals. Shackleton and Appleblim have decided to call time on the label, which over the past three years has acted as a platform mainly for their own productions, with one-off contributions from Bristolians Gatekeeper and Peverelist. Although Skull Disco will be sorely missed, massive respect to Shack and 'Blim for quitting while they're ahead and leaving behind a small but perfectly formed body of work that helped evolve and re-define bass music for the 21st century. Disc one of Soundboy's Gravestone Gets Desecrated By Vandals collects all the tracks from SKULL006 to SKULL010, except Ricardo Villalobos's groundbreaking remix of Shackleton's Blood on My Hands (SKULL007), which found its way onto the first Skull Disco CD compilation, Soundboy Punishments. Highlights include Appleblim's dub-techno masterpiece 'Vansan' and brooding Peverelist collaborations 'Circling' and 'Over Here,' as well as Shackleton's 'Death Is Not Final' and the previously unreleased original mix of 'Shortwave.' Disc two is dedicated to remixes of Skull Disco tracks. Some have been released before, like the Pole remix of 'Shortwave' (originally out on -scape), Brendan Moeller's 'Over Here' version and T++'s frankily terrifying re-work of 'Death Is Not Final'; but others, by the likes of DJ/Rupture, Geiom, Badawi and Bass Clef, are new. T++'s long-awaited mix of 'Vansan' also finally sees the light of day here. As with all Skull Disco releases, Soundboy's Gravestone is packaged in terrific artwork by the inimitable Zeke Clough.

Sigur Ros
Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust
PS, US This album glows with the perfect imperfection of live takes, the sounds of fingers playing guitar strings, cracked notes, and a stark, up front presence not found in previous recordings; moving away from reverb-soaked guitar sounds towards something altogether more affecting. It also contains some of the most joyous music Sigur Ros has ever recorded. "Old fashioned psychedelic grandeur...is revived with otherworldly majesty and inexorable crescendos¿a typically majestic but uncharacteristically summery album, with jolts of percussive energy and connotations of sunlight and air" - NY Times. Silent Land Time Machine
Hope Still
PS, US Digital version of the sold out LP. Pretty hard to pin this one down, but its a trip for sure. A rather mysterious one man band solo outing from Texas, who builds up layer upon layer of violin, viola, acoustic guitar, slippery electric slide, percussion, electronics, accordion, buried vocals, & found sounds into haunted, rollicking, thick sonic blankets of sound. Many simple parts entwined, looped, & orchestrated into an undulating whole, like naive bedroom folk rock filtered through some blissed out minimalist phase experiment. Ecstatic, post-psychedelic chamber rock maybe? Edition of 500

Sin Fang Bous
Clangour
PS, GERMANY This is the debut release by Reykjavik's Sindri Mar Sigfusson (Seabear) as Sin Fang Bous. Clangour is an album and a project that was a total surprise to Morr Music and to himself. Gravitational processes, drifts, accumulations, miniatures, a voice, a guitar, changing textures and re-colored leaves -- these are pocket symphonies in the vein of Brian Wilson. Songs, sounds and samples are crystal-clear and yet able to raise a storm. For example, "Advent In Ives Garden" is a greenhouse paradise of melody miniatures and sound pieces, and "Catch The Light" showcases Sindri's voice in choir-form. In this project there is a direct, intuitive sound that recalls Seabear, but that also embraces a pop naivety without embarrassment. Electronic squiggles, rallying percussion and a mishmash of guitars and vocals, this is a euphoric release in the spirit of Animal Collective, Caribou or Panda Bear, all wrapped up with a charming homemade pop bow.

Skeletons
Money
PS, US VINYL VERSION! Already up so early in the morning of 2008, SKELETONS were hibernating in the safest, quietest, warmest place in the world: Times Square, New York. In a haunted WWII-era ballroom they recorded through the wintry nights when the studio was on fire. Taking breaks at 5am, standing under heat lamps listening to Hot Jazz outside the Time Warp Hotel, soaking up the empty streets with the leftover creeps while the tourists sleep. It's just the same struggle any old human has to go through to make anything: make it to work on time, make an excuse, make babies, make war, make breakfast without getting into a fight. The child of this struggle is "Money", pre-made, for you, entering the world October 7th in the USA, and October 28th in the UK and Europe via TOMLAB.

Keep Breaking Down
PS, US LIMITED TO 500. A collection of songs dead-set on producing equal parts smirks & shouts. Like a thunderous roar, the groups has been leveling venues around the US w/their brand of gleeful roar since 2005. An uncompromised blend of crushing sounds, limitless energy, & childishly defiant persona, led by the death-by-riff, face-smashing bass of Adam Luksetich (NETHERVOID), the exasperated bleat & laugh-'til-you-cry lyrics of Kevin Koppes, & the drum fury of Joe "The Madman" Ross (WEATHER IS HAPPENING, SWING BY SEVEN). In terms of sound, we think they closely resemble The Jesus Lizard & Rapeman aping Motley Crue's Too Fast For Love. Elements of Lighting Bolt, Mission of Burma, The Fall, DFA1979, & Sleep are all present. Fun, catchy, & seriously rocking

Till The Old World's Blown Up & A New One Is Created
S-T
PS, US From out of nowhere comes this very interesting collaboration between CHRISTIAN FENNESZ, WERNER DAFELDECKER (of Polwechsel) & MARTIN BRANDLMAYR (of Radian, Trapist, Kapital Band 1, etc) that has been 4 yrs in the making. Tools consist of electric & acoustic guitars, computer, double bass, tape delay, drums, percussion, vibes, piano. The process: several improvisations are reworked into 3 brief trks, one edited by each member of the trio. Then the pieces are mined for a few very short fragments. In turn, these form the core of a much longer piece, painstakenly assembled around repeated motifs salvaged from the wreckage. Moments remind of Talk Talk, GodspeedY!BE, Angelo Badalamenti, Fennesz, etc. Deep, moody & well done! Comes in DCD (CD full length + CDEP) jewel case w/ vellum booklet & traycard

Mechanic Side Of Nature Part 1 of 4
PS, GERMANY With the first Circle Music compilation The World Of Circle the label presented itself as a community of artists, as a family, that proclaimed continuous movement, pure power and brilliant soundscapes in various styles which have these three attributes in common. With the new Circle compilation Mechanic Side Of Nature, now released as compilation EP series, the dualism of nature and life is represented in the mechanic character of electronic music art. By that it is possible to give the issue of Circle Music the face of its music: Reflecting life consequently with electronic music and digital sound poems in all its facets. On the first part Valentino Kanzyani, Toni Rios, Stryke and Audio Injection are presenting their tracks. A1 -- Valentino Kanzyani 'Valkanizateur': The co-founder of Recycled Loops and label head of Jesus Loved You created a very techy and dark dancefloor smasher with filtered synthesizer sounds squaring the listener with sharp sound design. The vocals come directly out of hell and the percussions are washing every clear thought out of the brain. This track is a killer. A2 -- Toni Rios 'Old Man's Chord':Toni Rios' track 'Old Man's Chord' convinces with deep and sensual vocals as well as with strong beats and nice synthesizer structures. There is no breathtaking while the track is not overloaded with effects or too many elements that would close the room for any possibility to move in it. The German techno legend shows one more time he is having everything under control. B1 -- Stryke 'Little Miracles': DJ Stryke, famous for his releases on labels like Monoid, Droid, Circle of course, Ovum or Strictly Hype since the early nineties, this man from Florida creates a sound army of robots that are in a very bad mood. Stomping everything down that stands in their way they are reaching far into the sky to grab every single star out of it. B2 -- Audio Injection 'Droid Attack': Out of L.A. Audio Injection brings the next 'Droid Attack' to the dancefloor. Releasing on labels like Monoid, Droid Recordings, Stimulus or Tyrisia, David F. is home at every style of techno music one could imagine. His androids are the more computer like beings. With weird ringing sounds of changing organic stuff into electronic they are showing, the machines are coming.

Fading Yellow Volume 9
PS, SWEDEN Subtitled: 'The Other Side of Life: Timeless UK Pop-Sike & Other Delights, 1966-1972'. Limited Edition ninth installment of this very fine compilation series that collects the best Pop/Folk/Psyche sounds from the UK circa 1968-75. If you dig the sound of Fairport Convention, early Bee Gees, The Moody Blues, the psychedelic Beatles... 21 tracks available on a compilation for the very first time. SHINDIG MAGAZINE: "Here we are squarely back in singles territory. Pop Workshop's 'Fairyland' is a good starter and manages to be both brash and gentle at the same time. Suzi Klee's 'Punch And Judy Girl' is a plaintive and tremulous pop ballad by this 'Swiss Miss' (I've always wanted to use that somewhere!); it comes across like Jan and Lorraine produced by Mike Batt (only it was produced by Georgio Gomelsky!). Dave Christie's 'Penelope Breedlove' makes its commercial compilation debut (and is also included on Psychic Circle's Fairytales Can Come True comp also out this month); a fabulous and atmospheric pean to the object of his affections, this is NOT the same version as the 6AX acetate compiled on Syde Tryps Vol.7. Although it's the same song, the two versions are markedly different in arrangement and timing, so you certainly need both. Pussyfoot's 'Hasty Words' is another beauty with its lilting 3/3 waltz timing and a lovely choral vocal job to boot. Mike Leslie's 'Office Girl' has been a long time want of mine in the original, a delightful ode to a lonely clerical worker lost in the urban crowd as the singer puckers up the courage to approach her. It deserved to be more than a B side too. Rodney Bewes' 'Dear Mother Love Albert' is the topside to the already compiled and much sought after 'Meter Maid' and it has a similar vibe - was this the actual TV series signature tune or was it written as a single in its own right I wonder? It sounds way too magically bendy for 1970 television! Christian's 'Other Side Of Life' is another restless orch popper with more than a passing reminder of The Apple's 'Other Side' as well. A good string arrangement adds a lot to it. Tony Ritchie seems to have recorded quite a few sides in Europe including the excellent 'Rain On My Window' included here with its urgent "loner" vibe that would have suited Paul & Barry Ryan for instance c.1967. Maybe it's about time a Tony Ritchie anthology was compiled? This is another excellent collection of emotionally challenging sides. You may encounter some of these sides individually occasionally but it is only when they are compiled with this level of aesthetic skill that they fully bloom."

Fading Yellow Volume 8
PS, SWEDEN Subtitled: 'Hymns for Today: UK Pop-Folk-Sike Sounds 1968-1975'. Limited Edition eighth installment of this very fine compilation series that collects the best Pop/Folk/Psyche sounds from the UK circa 1968-75. If you dig the sound of Fairport Convention, early Bee Gees, The Moody Blues, the psychedelic Beatles... 21 tracks available on a compilation for the very first time. SHINDIG MAGAZINE: "It's been a long hiatus but at last here are two excellent new volumes of the cult Fading Yellow series. Vol. 8 is collection of British artist album tracks of the period 1968-75... A beautiful confection of pastoral shades and cotton wool clouds floating in a hazy Summer sky. Predominantly mid-paced and lightly orchestrated, these are often acoustic based songs with electric underpinning. A few, in the interval, have become more familiar, notably the two fine selections by Jan & Lorraine from their recently reissued Gipsy People album. The majority however will be new to your ears. The track selection and flow is pretty much faultless as one track melts effortlessly into the next, working its magic on the ears. In some instances, tracks are surprising reworkings of the most unlikely songs. For instance Raw's (aka New York Public Library) rendition of 'What To Do', from their US and Germany released only Raw Holly album consists of covers of Buddy Holly songs - this one is an orchestrated tabla and sitar version! There are the short sharp spurts like the enigmatic (because there is nothing known about him) Michael Blount with 'Acorn Street' from his 1971 Patchwork album, which at 1.58 leaves you wanting a lot more of the same. P.C. Kent's 'After Dark' is from their self-titled Deram Nova album and is pleasingly pop (think a lighter version of Blossom Toes's 'Postcard' for instance) whilst Vigrass & Osborne's 'Ballerina' (which was also a single or a B side I think) has all the atmosphere, heavy with pathos of Mike Batt's series title track 'Fading Yellow' from Vol.1. Storyteller's 'Alice Brown', Fuchsia's 'Me And My Kite' and Evensong's 'The Smallest Man In The World' are also excellent. Overall, the FY signature brand of soundscape is very much perpetuated here and fans of the series will lap this up. There are as usual liner notes and band pics in the booklet which help contextualise the music nicely. Buy with confidence."

Their midwest AM bubblegum roots are apparent in the likes of GARY CHARLSON, THE SECRETS, ARLIS!, GEMS, MILLIONAIRE AT MIDNIGHT, THE BOYS, J.P. This is a unique story of a teenage part-time prostitute who spends her earnings buying ice cream for neighborhood children, & of the man who obsesses over her from afar, told from both angles, & spanning their lives. However, the approach of this story intends to transcend taboos & judgment to offer the listener a vast spectrum of the emotion & ideals of the characters, setting & circumstance. Why Are We Building Such A Big Ship?
No Blood, No Blooms
PS, US New wax from Mississippi Records! After a return from Hurricane Katrina's exodus, 9 folks took their knowledge (or lack thereof) of instruments & put together ""Why Are We Building Such A Big Ship?"". With an accordion & upright bass supporting the musical backbone, a 6 piece horn section appears and drops out, playing layered melodies with minimalist percussion as glue. Beautiful, as well as scrappy, six songs measuring in at 37 minutes, wonderfully recorded by Don Godwin in November of 2007. We are happy to put this record out into the world. This limited pressing of 800 comes in hand silk screened covers w/ an insert.

Windsurf
Coastlines
PS, US Debut album by San Fran producer duo, WINDSURF (aka SORCERER's Daniel Judd and HATCHBACKs Sam Grawe). W/ a plethora of critically-acclaimed releases already under their own respective belts incl. their own solo debut albums for Tirk (as Sorcerer) & Lo Recordings (as Hatchback), Coastlines could well be hailed as a modern day "cosmic disco/slo-mo house" classic. Described as "Tangerine Dream's Edgar Froese meets Steely Dan" says Internasjonal/Full Pupp label boss & Lindstrøm collaborator, PRINS THOMAS. In fact, Thomas was already doing remixes for both Daniel and Sam's solo projects before he even realized they were Windsurf. He put out their previously-digital Windsurf EP & more tracks & ideas led to this full release.

XELA
In Bocca Al Lupo
PS, UK This is the fourth full-length release from Manchester-based Xela (John Twells), and his second release on his own Type label imprint. In 2006, he released the horror-flecked epic The Dead Sea. Taking influence from the movies of Dario Argento and Umberto Lenzi and fusing them with a Lovecraftian concept, he created the perfect tribute to his obsession. Every good horror movie has a sequel, and for this full-length follow-up, John has used the dark corners of the Christian religion as his guide. Composed initially for a fear-themed Chicago art installation, the 60-minute piece gradually took shape as a celebration of desolate cellars and distant church bells, the things that truly scare him. Researching further took him to Spain and Italy as he explored basilicas, cathedrals and crumbling churches in search of inspiration. Ancient stories, whispered histories and sounds drifting through generations became the basis of the recording, which is split into four distinct parts. Beginning with metallic scrapes and haunting industrial soundscapes, we drift among fluidly dense drones, electrical hums and crumbling noise. Like a doom-laden take on the crunching assault of Hair Police or a noisy version of David Lynch's Eraserhead soundtrack, the music is stripped down to the bare bones of what is necessary. Before long, we hit the record's central piece, "In Deo Salutari Meo" which takes an almost funereal tone, using religious bells as the primary sound source. Eventually the album climaxes on the longest piece, "Beatae Immortalitatis," which features Heavy Winged's Jed Bindeman on drums. Bindeman was last seen lending his percussive skills to "Calling For Vanished Faces" which appeared on the Xela/MGR split earlier in 2008, and here his pummeling beats accompany John's icy oscillator tones. Like a freeform Pan Sonic, this takes heavy electronic music into a frightening new place, ending in a thick cloud of screams and crackle. One might even call it a religious experience.

Zs/Child Abuse
Split
PS, US Another in ZUM MEDIA's split 7" series (following their popular split w/ Abe Vigoda/Mikaela's Fiend). This split pairs NYC prog brutalists Zs & CHILD ABUSE. Child Abuse feat. members of Dig That Body Up...It's Alive, Optimists International, Murder Murder, Meths, ABK, & Sheath. Their contributions incl. a version of a Dolphy tune "Hat & Beard," along w/ the synth squak of "Conversations." Zs have enchanted & confounded many since their 2000
conception in Manhattan. Output by the band has found homes on labels such as Troubleman Unlimited, Planaria, Gilgongo, & 31G. "In My Dream I Shot A Monk" harkens to the vintage sextet formation that dovetails nicely w/ their current output, an aggro vocal workout of epic man-angst. Cover artwork by John Dwyer (Thee Oh Sees)

Antony & The Johnsons
The Crying Light (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US Antony and the Johnson's breakthrough second album "I Am a Bird Now" won the UK's prestigious Mercury Prize in 2005. The success that followed introduced many to a pioneering soul singer unafraid to explore themes that traversed darkness and light, life and death, male and female. Antony's inimitable voice sparked the interest of artists ranging from Bjork to Hercules and Love Affair, resulting in a series of critically acclaimed collaborations. "The Crying Light" is the highly anticipated full-length follow-up to "I Am a Bird Now". Here, Antony shifts the thematic focus and explores his relationship with the natural world. The intimacy of the Johnsons' sound is enveloped by avant-classical composer Nico Muhly's symphonic arrangements. The record's centerpiece, "Another World" traces the singer's dispair in the face of a vanishing landscape. Antony and the Johnsons' music bridges the gap between avant-classical music and the blues, and the band's sold out performances have resulted in standing ovations from Carnegie Hall to the Apollo. "The Crying Light" is a soul-stirring new work with its daring compositions and captivating vocal performances. Antony and the Johnsons have created a subtle and timely work that brings a magical and yet changing world to the forefront of our consciousness.

Blackout Beach
Skin of Evil (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20th)
PS, US Blackout Beach is the solo nom de guerre of Carey Mercer (FROG EYES/SWAN LAKE). Skin of Evil is remarkable in the sense that a. it contains a story, and b. that it sticks to the story; a rare occurrence in these free times. "Donna" is the subject, and each of her lovers (past & present) say their peace in song (Donna gets her song, too). Composed, played & recorded entirely by Mercer alone, these songs revel in the proto-punk darkness of the heady Cleveland axis (e.g. Peter Laughner, David Thomas) with a minimal, textural & almost Suicide-ish sense of pop form & the experimental nature of contemporary Scott Walker works.

Bon Iver
Blood Bank (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US The four-song Blood Bank collection continues down the path forged by 2008's critically acclaimed For Emma, Forever Ago. While still tied to the identity of the place where it was born, Bon Iver is no longer an unplanned entity synonymous with Justin Vernon. It is an idea, a place and sentiment that has now become as international as it is timeless. From the title track's remembrance of the winter warmth we seek, to the summer love tribute of b-side gem"Babys," Bon Iver's snow-blanketed harmonies live across the seasons. Still, there is a reverence for sabbatical, solitude and the winding down of time. As much as Emma is about the cold, the Blood Bank collection is about the warmth that gets you through it. You can feel the air move. Like a fire you've been stoking for hours and finally got to sustain itself, the heat blisters your face while your back is frozen solid. Bon Iver has grown to include more than what was available at the much-fabled Wisconsin cabin, such as piano, slide guitar, and vocoder. As Justin layers on harmonies in the meditative R&B a capella "The Woods," he declares "I'm building a still to slow down the time." It is as poetic as it is necessary. Both expansive and intimate, these four songs explore the darker and lighter natures of the seasons and what they signify, and offer a dynamic glimpse into the Natural energy and refined craftsmanship that characterize Justin Vernon's music.

Clue To Kalo
Lily Perdida (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US Satisfyingly schizophrenic, Clue To Kalo's third full-length release Lily Perdida is ten voices in one, all of them a different branch off the same electric folk tree. Amidst jangly guitar, mod ribbons of flute, and the voices of mastermind Mark Mitchell and duet partner Ellen Carey, ten musical perspectives on fictional character Lily Perdida emerge, each song from the point of view of a different person in her life. A post-modern frolic of keyboards, harpsichords and laptops, Lily Perdida is a gorgeous and sonically sprawling commentary on the nature of history and identity. Each succeeding track reinterprets, misreads or conflicts with the accounts that came before to collectively create an anti-portrait of the main character. The music ebbs and flows with the changing characters but never strays from the utterly satisfying sound we have come to expect from Clue To Kalo. Hailing from Adelaide, Australia, Clue To Kalo mastermind Mark Mitchell blends a lo-fi acoustic-folk aesthetic to computer-based production in which the technology is the means rather than the end. A generous use of layered melodies, elemental textures, and multi-tracked vocals highlight a vast range of influences and solidify the fact that Clue To Kalo is first and foremost a songwriter. In addition to many shows in Australia and Japan, Clue To Kalo has toured throughout the US and Canada, was a featured artist at the Mush 2003 CMJ and 2005 SXSW showcases, and has shared the stage with luminaries like the Greenhornes, Willowz, Death Cab For Cutie, Caribou, and many more. Inventive without being inaccessible, Clue To Kalo has established himself as a singular artist of extraordinary scope and depth.

Color Cassette
Forever Sparrow (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 13th)
PS, FRANCE Color Cassette was initially the project of a single musician, Jason Corder (aka OffTheSky): an old guitar and one four track recorder went head to head in their home studio of Lexington, Kentucky. But this solitary project quickly evolved into a collaborative one, in the course of casual meetings that became veritable musical interventions. In the course of four years, 14 musicians worked at the home studio. Today, Color Cassette is Jason Corder and Matt Yarington (aka Set In Sound), with various guests such as Clint Colburn (vocals), Colin Campbell (drums, vibes), Anna Hess (violin) and Jordan Munson (textures, field recordings). After Small Town Smoker, the first EP in 2008 ('single of the week' at Boomkat, reference for online mail orders), Color Cassette is now releasing their first concept album, Forever Sparrow. It tells the story of a little boy who gets lost in a magic forest, and when he is transformed into a sparrow, he chooses to stay in this extraordinary world forever. This musical journey, which evokes the themes found in Peter Pan and Alice In Wonderland, takes the shape of an acoustic collection in outlines deformed through an electronic prism. Sketched during the sunny summer afternoons of 2007, this handful of ideas metamorphosed into song-format fragments, which put forth the best part of a sound digression. They form a record that is a miniature, moving, and sometimes disturbing, odyssey. COLOR CASSETTE: Jason Corder : vocals, lyrics, vibes, melodica, drums, guitar, bass, production... Matt Yarington : production, drums, programming. Guests: Clint Colburn: vocals Colin Campbell: drums, vibes Anna Hess: violin Jordan Munson: textures, field recordings. Epic 45
Bracken / Bibio Remixes (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 13TH)
PS, UK Tracks : A : 'You Are An Annual' remixed by Bracken B : 'Stars In Autumn' remixes by Bibio. 2 track 45rpm heavyweight 12" vinyl. "Epic 45 are those cooler than thou post-post-rock chaps who wang an album or EP out occasionally to be consumed rabidly by you, the hungry music vulture. Now they've a limited remix 12" in a variety of sleeves, one for each season of the year. I remember when we used to actually have seasons in this country rather than the schizo mulch of conditions we get these days! Bibio & Hood's Chris Adams AKA Bracken are the prizefight contenders here, Bibio's re-jig of 'Stars in Autumn' being an atmospheric brooder reminiscent of later period Boards of Canada. Building up from fractured astral wildlife effects into a spaced clanky ambler of a tune, I can also hear bits of Intricate in there, a reassuringly old skool electronic vibe, full of drifting twinkles & a shuffling phat beat. Very cinematic in places, it really sets the mood for a lazy sunny afternoon's loafing! Bracken re-shapes 'You are an Annual' into a pastoral and blissed out journey full of hesitant bass thrums, shifting, morphing effects that slip in and around the serene vocals and some impressive dubbed-out delay and phasing action! This sounds closer to his later Hood vision rather than the sonic tinkering and future pop of his solo Bracken material and should just be the icing on the cake for fans of both Hood & Epic 45! A real treat this one & we're proud to be giving it the coveted SOTW" spot!

Japan (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 13TH)
PS, US This Melbourne, Australia act plays thundering, spacious metallic sludge. This is a LTD ED, silk screened 1st run of only 200 copies on COLOR vinyl. Aquarius Records sez of the band: "Aussie noise rockers the Grey Daturas had been telling us forever about some killer band called Fire Witch, who they played w/ all the time. FW are another band who traffic in the slooooooooow & heavy, but they definitely give it their own twist. Not sludgy like SUNNO))) or their legions of followers, & not really noisy like many of their countrymen. Instead they're some sort of strange downtuned slowcore mathrock. Massive basses (that's right. no guitars!) churn & throb, the drums a crushing pound, over the top, drawn out wailing 'leads', all the makings of a proper rock band, but instead they fuck it all up... laced w/ all sorts of killer melodies, making it sound like a doomed version of June Of 44 or Engine Kid"

Jeremy Jay
Love Everlasting (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US 4 songs: Love Everlasting · Lite Beam · Jet Stream · Love Everlasting (Winter Version) It was winter outside and something was happening in the storybook world of Jeremy Jay's psyche. While working on his upcoming full-length Slow Dance [KLP197] (to be released in spring '09), there was an icicle-caked excitement that resulted in a snow-flurry of extra recordings. The cozy, insulated vibe of Olympia, Washington and Dub Narcotic Studio took hold and Jeremy, along with Ilya Malinksy (guitar), Nick Pahl (drums) and Derek James (bass) crafted "Love Everlasting" [KLP202] a separate 12" single. These extra songs, recorded with a fiery compulsion, were written in Jeremy's Los Angeles apartment and expanded in studio. The song "Lite Beam" took shape with a solarized hi-hat and synth bass - a real disco dance cut; "Jet Stream," has that special synth bass that propels it to a dance floor climax, and the single itself, "Love Everlasting," twinkles magnificently with a sensual glide. Jeremy Jay and his band have toured extensively across the U.S.A., Europe and Australia in support of his recent album A Place Where We Could Go [KLP187] and will be reacquainting the U.S. with their icy soundscapes after the release of this 12" single. "Part poet, part '50s teen idol and part ghost, Jeremy Jay [takes listeners to] a place where girls have fairytale looks and candied apples are served for lunch, where dreams, fantasies and movies collide, and where Gene Vincent, Buddy Holly, Morrissey and Alan Vega are loved equally. It's no surprise that Jay calls his hometown of Los Angeles 'the City of Angels' -- he's a true romantic and sensualist, transforming his surroundings into a glamorous, magical reality." - All Music Guide

Judys, The
Land Of Plenty [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE ????)
PS, US First ever official release for The Judys last album, recorded but never released! In 1990, The Judy's set out to record a new album with a new Judy's sound. Featuring the lineup that had been established over a number of years the band, including Barbara Donaho (keyboards/guitars), Lee Malone (bass), and Darwin Keys (drums), set out to explore new horizons musically and thematically. Land of Plenty injected multi-layered keyboards and guitars, stacked vocals, a gospel choir, and even a bit of banjo into the band's palatte and sought to realize Bean's vision of a new Americana musical landscape. Broad in its scope and daring in its expansion of the band's definition of itself, Land of Plenty was shelved when the group disbanded before the CD's release. While a handful of copies have been given out, this is first time this long sought-after project has been available to the general public.

Judys, The
Moo [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE 2008)
PS, US The original 'Moo' album finally re-issued on CD for the first time! CD sports seven bonus tracks, mainman David Bean's "Modomusic" EP. Released almost four years to the day after Washarama and following an eighteen month hiatus, The Judy's Moo album has a slightly more progressive sound: richer production values, fuller arrangements and thicker harmonies. As the band returned to the stage in 1985, this was the album that showed the band's maturity and development as songwriters and musicians. The twelve songs on Moo, laced with solid-state irony, well-placed cynicism and standard issue Judys' wit, show the band at the peak of their creativity and acted as a springboard for their live extravaganzas. The album was released with The Moo Tour - a month of live performances across the state which included giant cereal boxes, moving conveyer belts of milk cartons, and a dancing cow while the band donned milkman uniforms. Critically acclaimed and fan-revered, The Moo Album continues to be a milestone in Texas pop music.

PS, US Rutger and Stephen sort of accidentally met through e-mail. A simple note regarding an ordering question for a CD led to an enthusiastic e-mail conversation and climaxed in a musical collaboration. This all happened in a very short period, both musicians being very inspired by the concept of "exchange," as a means to cross space and time -- Rutger living in the Netherlands and Stephen in Virginia. Most of the time, when (electronic) musicians work together it's a matter of swapping digital files. In this case they decided to do something different and sent each other a box full of (mostly non-musical, or musically non-functional) objects and recordings, with the "assignment" to make music with those objects and all as source materials. As the titles tell, we're talking about an egg cutter, thumb piano, a broken kraakle box, rice, chocolate sprinkles, old cassette tapes, a broken 7" record, etcetera, etcetera. Both musicians made two of their own solo tracks with the box they received, and the last track was done together by Rutger adding sounds and processing to a piece started by Stephen. For Rutger/ Machinefabriek this is part of his most delicate work. For Stephen, it was a new and extremely enjoyable form of long-distance collaboration. Machinefabriek: Rutger Zuydervelt, better known as Machinefabriek, lives in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Started as Machinefabriek in 2004, he released 40+ small run home-made cdr's as well as work for Type Records, Lampse, Digitalis, Staalplaat (Mort Aux Vaches) and now 12K. A double remix cd was released in 2007, with interpetations by Alva Noto, Pita, Mitchell Akiyama, Xela, Gert-Jan Prins and many more. Collaborations (live or recording) include Steinbrüchel, Jasper TX, Wouter van Veldhoven, Simon Nabatov, Frans de Waard, Aaron Martin and Peter Broderick. Stephen Vitiello: Stephen Vitiello is a sound and media artist based in Richmond, VA. CD releases include Bright and Dusty Things (New Albion), Listening to Donald Judd (Sub Rosa) and Untitled/Exchange, a collaborative CD with Michael J. Schumacher (A Question of Re-Entry). Solo exhibitions of Vitiello's sound installations, photographs and drawings have been presented at The Project, NY, Museum 52, London, the Texas Gallery, Houston, TX and Diapason, NYC. Group exhibitions include the 2002 Whitney Biennial and the 2006 Biennial of Sydney. Over the last 18 years, Stephen has collaborated with numerous musicians and artists including Scanner, Pauline Oliveros, Andrew Deutsch, Julie Mehretu and Tony Oursler.

Marhaug/Feiler
No More Drama (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 16th)

A Picture of this record should be next to every definition of Noise music. Lasse Marhaug plays in Jazkamer and has at least 300 other great projects solo and with other people. Dror Feiler served as a paratrooper in the Israel Defense Forces, and refused to serve in the occupied territories in the early 70's. He is now a Swedish-Israeli musician and artist and has been living in Stockholm, Sweden since 1973. He is active as a composer of modern music and enjoys giving ear problems and headaches to classically trained musicians. The most brutal vinyl record you will hear this year.

In cahoots with fellow 1900s vocalist (and Ed's significat other) Caroline Donovan and their comrade Charles D'Autremont, Mazes is not so much departure fro his hitherto verdant psych-pop meadow as a vehicle for Edward to explore further musical flora and fauna.

Music Go Music
Warm In The Shadows (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US Warm in the Shadows rounds out the trio of three-song 12" singles that Music Go Music have released over the course of 2008-09. It's both a fitting end-piece to the trilogy and a remarkable expansion of the group's sonic and emotional breadth. There is a casual but undeniable magic to these songs, and it flows around and out of each note of every melody. Title song "Warm in the Shadows" is dance music, as envisioned by a group with a greater allegiance to pop archetypes than to the hymns of the dance-floor. It's a step in a different direction; an invitation to shake, coupled with a gentle evocation of the pain of wrecked love ("what kind of heart would break so easy as my own"). It's a case history and a cure for both the lovesick and the lovesick-to-be. The B-side offers up stories of exotic depravity consuming itself in ways both savage and deceptively elegant. The gypsy rhythms of "Thousand Crazy Nights" undergird a tale of dog piled revelers instructed to "feel with your face, let eyes be your hands" whilst "trapped in desire's aggro dance.""Love,Violent Love" is a psychedelic voyage through a land of raving mobs who "spiral past control" once their love is at last requited. This collection of songs is further proof of the power of the transformative embrace in which Music Go Music holds what is dear to them, and the singular vision that they impart to it.

Cats and Babies (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, JAPAN Nomad (Cavemen Speak, Gunporn) finally comes back with his 2nd album called "Cats and Babies" . His debut album called "Lemon Tea" (2006) was critically acclaimed as "bedroom hip hop folk". He was doing between rapping and singing so he was described as "rapper songwriter". With this album, he's become a singer songwriter. He did all by himself in his small bedroom, like songwriting, recording and playing all the instruments (guitar, piano, drums, glockenspiel etc. ) as well as the artwork. Beautiful melodies and fragile fairy voice and witty but intelligent lyrics. You will never forget his voice when once you listen. His music has magic.

Ocean
Pantheon Of The Lesser (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 11TH)
PS, US 2xLP to follow in about one month. Following their acclaimed breakthrough debut album that caught the ears of critics and fans worldwide, and became Important's highest selling album, Ocean has returned with their forward thinking, brutally heavy and purely minimalist sophomore album Pantheon Of The Lesser. Pantheon Of The Lesser was composed over a period of two years in Ocean's home studio in Portland, Maine. As the seasons passed each track was written, re-written, played and then re-played as layers were slowly stripped away until the true essence of the song was revealed. Once Ocean entered the studio it took another two years to deconstruct Pantheon Of The Lesser until they had found the essence of their writing. This disciplined deconstructionist approach to songwriting is how Pantheon Of The Lesser is how Ocean takes it to the next level of the abyss. The result of this compositional technique is over an hour of strictly bare instrumentation and a kind of natural heaviness that slowly rises and falls in a pure organic fashion. Everything in it's own time. Simply profound. Heavy like Schoenberg. While Ocean continues to explore and expand upon their "less is more" approach of profound musical minimalism and sheer heaviness, Pantheon Of The Lesser is a bit more musical than its predecessor. The Beacon, the opening track on Pantheon Of The Lesser, was played as Ocean's complete set on a recent US tour and on dates with Mono and Boris. Clocking in at 41 minutes on record and over an hour live; The Beacon evolves in 3 distinct movements with fleeting moments of hypnotic melody and earth shaking heavy dirges creating an all-encompassing tone of pure misanthropy. The second and final track on Pantheon Of The Lesser, titled Of The Lesser, carries a similar theme of misery. Written as an ode to distraction, chemical and otherwise, it is Ocean at their most personal: a pure sonic stream of consciousness in slow motion. Packaged in a deluxe foil printed heavy-duty cardboard jacket with art by renowned Maine illustrator Bruce Hutchison. The vinyl version is packaged in double 200 gram vinyl, packaged in deluxe letter pressed covers and limted to 500 copies.

O'Malley, Stephen
Keep an Eye Out! (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US Table of the Elements continues to celebrate its 15th anniversary with the tenth installment in its Guitar Series Vols. 3 & 4. It's a 12xLP romp of deviant fretnoise by some of experimental music's most prominent players, including Christian Fennesz, Thurston Moore, and Sunn O)))'s Stephen O'Malley. Sunn O))) founder Stephen O'Malley summons a mesmerizing drone, absorbing the listener into an aural tar pit of deep, inexorable oblivion. He wears a cloak of post-metal allegiances with behemoths like Earth, but beneath that, there is a vibrant body of work that owes as much to the heady minimalism of Tony Conrad and Steve Reich. Constantly pushing at the extremes of volume and duration, O'Malley's sound is a physical phenomenon, infused with an intimidating power - and possessing, at its core, an oddly meditative tranquility. "The supremacy of Table of the Elements for the past decade as an unwavering outpost of ultra-experimental strains can be attributed to its concomitant adherence to valiance. Most of the Table of the Elements catalogue has no broad commercial appeal, and many of its projects - scores for films directed by early-60s Conrad associate Jack Smith or a 3xCD box set by an unknown two-guitars-and-drums trio from Atlanta - are risky ventures, even with respect to the experimental marketplace. Yet, this philosophy of risk works because everyone associated with the label feels like they're doing important work releasing important records, and they're willing to go for broke to make it happen." -PITCHFORK

One More Grain
Scarborough Fair (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 16th)
PS, UK OMG formed in the summer of 2006; with their first album 'Pigeon English' being released on that bellwether of independent labels Victory Garden. 'Isle of Grain' followed in January 2008 on White Heat grabbing album of the week in the Sunday Times (5 out of 5 stars) and the band needing a wheelbarrow to carry the positive reviews. The single 'Having a Ball' was unlikely championed by Radio One tosser Zane Lowe. Scarborough Fair' has the village fair fancifulness of Paul Simon's tinkering arrangement replaced by a both haunting and decidedly enchanting yet darker and more forthrightly trippy affair; a mind-warping, dream-like dub collage. Either a lysergic haven located deep in the mindset of Sun Ra, or a hazily atmospheric, drugged feel as if It's Immaterial were produced by Martin Hannett. It's a deeply engaging and crafted reclaiming of a folk foundation stone. 'Giriama Wedding' another traditional arrangement but this time a Kenyan wedding song which apparently was stumbled upon by way of a release on the legendary Nonesuch Explorer imprint, entitled 'Witchcraft and Ritual Music'. A dizzyingly up-tempo and frenetic gem that provides for a hot thick stew of wired, squirreling ska-like brass arrangements, all woven into an acutely vibrant and weirdly sultry ethnic pop song. If we weren't any the wiser we'd have hedged our bets by saying it was the Contortions in a grueling stare-down with Pigbag Edition of 500 on 7" vinyl. For fans of Early Factory Records, Martin Carthy, The Fall, Martin Hannett and Terry Riley.

PS, US The One Up Downstairs is members of American Football, Owen, and Very
Secretary. For years The One Up Downstairs was discussed on message boards and became the frequent recipient of questions sent to the Polyvinyl info e-mail account: were they actually a band, did they sound like American Football, did they ever record? The answers to all of these questions are a resounding "yes." In an effort to make the songs available to fans Polyvinyl released the band's only recorded output a few years ago, which led to another question: would the songs ever see a proper release as a 7"? Long sought after, these songs are now available as a 7" that includes a digital download code for the entire release.

O'Rourke, Jim & Loren Connors
Two Nice Catholic Boys (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US These two nice Catholic boys, Loren Connors and Jim O'Rourke, met at the crossroads each night during a 1997 European tour. By this time O'Rourke had reissued Connors' seminal heartbreak album In Pittsburgh on his Dexter's Cigar label and was preparing to produce the guitarist's big-band mash-up Hoffman Estates with Alan Licht. Together, Connors-O'Rourke unravel slow motion Venusian style blues across three extended pieces to thundering, feedback splattered grooves. The spontaneous melodies shift from devastating, country road intimacy to hypnotic over-amped rock. It's ferocious, epic, and an utter beauty capable only from two who know themselves and each other all too well. This live CD is only the second duo release by these musical partners despite performing together since the mid-90s. During the past decade, O'Rourke has repeatedly returned to hours of recordings captured across Europe to select these 47 minutes.

Parenthetical Girls
Safe As Houses (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US "THERE'S BLOOD BETWEEN MY LEGS, AND IN THE GRASS OUTSIDE YOUR HOUSE I CAME." With this goose-pimplingly visceral couplet begins the fragile journey of Safe As Houses, the second album from experimental Northwestward pop band Parenthetical Girls. Though some two years past between the initial release of the (((GRRRLS))) LP (Parenthetical Girls' debut album, recently reissued on Slender Means Society), Safe As Houses' narrative begins precisely where that album left off-on the same sweat-and-menstrual-blood-soaked summer lawn that so tenderly concluded their debut-but this time from a harrowingly different perspective. "Love Connection, pt. 2" cements the somber, ostensibly sinister narrative tone that shrouds much of Safe As Houses, while simultaneously establishing the tremendous sonic leap the band undertook in their two years of relative quiet. From there, the record leaps into an altogether different sort of narrative-one anchored in the surprising confidence of words-singer Zac Pennington's plainspoken and startlingly corporeal apparitions. Unsettling and beautiful in equal measure, Pennington's a-linear narrative weaves the surprisingly evocative mythology that cradles the record's kitchen-sink experimentation. Recorded with the band's previous three-piece configuration (an ensemble made up of Pennington and Dead Science members Sam Mickens and Jherek Bischoff-a regular contributor to Xiu Xiu and Casiotone For the Painfully Alone, who also served as producer for the record), Safe As Houses embraces the group's shrewd attention to the awkward confluence of experimental and pop musics-creating a record that is at once more difficult and more intrinsically palatable (not to mention significantly darker) than anything so far bearing the Parenthetical Girls name. Which is to say, it's much better.

Parenthetical Girls
(((GRRRLS))) (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US The cumbersome history of the (((GRRRLS))) LP begins sometime in 2002, when two childhood friends began a home recording project in a failed milltown of Everett, Washington. Compiling an innocent assortment of equipment (bass synthesizer, ill-tuned guitar, analog tape delay, and glockenspiel), Pennington and thencollaborator Jeremy Cooper embarked on a course to emulate the spirit of their mutual musical interests, which at the time primarily included the likes of Brian Eno, Pete Kember, Phil Spector, and the early Rough Trade catalog. Over the following year, the clunky results were compiled onto a low bias cassette tape (split into a strained eight tracks) and labeled "Parenthetical Girls". This cassette was mixed down to a single copy, the original tape promptly lost. A year or so later--with the help of considerably more capable hands (namely the Dead Science's Jherek Bischoff and Xiu Xiu's Jamie Stewart- Pennington set about digitally (and heavily) retrofitting the original recordings into seven proper compositions. To further complicate matters, Pennington commissioned Bischoff and Stewart to complete two radically different sets of mixes for the songs-which have since become respectively known as the "O" and "X" versions of the record. But now it's four years on. In that time, Parenthetical Girls have released two more critically-acclaimed full lengths (2006's Safe As Houses [Slender Means Society] and this year's Entanglements [Tomlab]), toured the US and Europe with the likes of Deerhoof, Xiu Xiu, Los Campesinos!, Evangelicals, and Casiotone For the Painfully Alone (whose album Etiquette, incidentally, features a rather lovely cover of (((GRRRLS)))' closing track "Love Connection"). We are pleased to finally present (((GRRRLS))) with the wide distribution that it deserves for the first time. In an attempt to maintain the distinct duality of the LP release, the CD version of (((GRRRLS))) features both editions of the album-but in two different, enhanced CD formats: version "O" (as mixed by Jherek Bischoff) plays on any standard CD player like your average CD should, while the "X" version (as mixed by Jamie Stewart), takes advantage of the near ubiquity of the iPod revolution by offering its tracks as super high quality MP3s, accessible via any computer. (Confused? Me too. Just put it in your computer-you'll figure it out). Additionally, the enhanced materials feature "Inspirational Shortpants (avec paroles)," a track not available on the original vinyl release.

Psychic Ills
Mirror Eye (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US "Psychic Ills have that dance band by accident thing going for them in a big way. Everything about them is bewitching, really, evacuating, an unlikely future-primitive grind." - Village Voice "This NYC quartet set their stall somewhere between oceanic guitar abstraction and the brittle crunch of psychedelic guitar rock, feeding their extended chugging jams through a thick fog of fuzz." - The Wire Mirror Eye, the second full-length album from Psychic Ills, is an altogether heady affair and as its title suggests, a perspective reflection. Through the course of eight tracks, Elizabeth Hart, Jimy SeiTang, Brian Tamborello and Tres Warren journey through a unique amalgamation of electronic explorations, improvised jamming and various sonic experiments that yield a record at once familiar and otherworldly - and unlike anything happening right now. Sprawling opener "Mantis" sets the record's tone with modulating synths and hand drums that give way to a loose groove, terrestrial guitar patterns and shamanic vocals. If you are still around when it rolls into its ending nearly 11 minutes later, its safe to say that you're on board. Following that, the open-ended trance rock of the second track, 'Meta' fades up as if the band has already been jamming on it long before the listener has been let in. It departs in a similar fashion, save for a brief reprise of reversed tape and whatever remnants of the chorus' "Meta, Meta, Meta" are hanging around in the listener's head like a contact high. "Sub Synth" is an off-the-cuff synthesizer splice that descends into the improvised space raga of "Eyes Closed." I Take You As My Wife Again" continues deeper into the abstract with metallic synths and improvised electronics transitioning into organic percussion and whistles before ultimately arriving at its minimal techno inspired ending. Fingernail Tea" is the most straight forward song and vaguely harkens back to elements of their previous full-length, Dins. The hallucinatory next track, "The Way Of" is the album's last burst of energy, forming out of spinning synths and clatter, and riding an eastern bass line and watery guitar riff before unravelling under percussion and goat scream mania. final track "Go to the radio" is a come down of sorts combining two main processed loops, an electronic tambura with a circular dubbed-out field recording of a man's voice repeating the song's name and message, and perhaps the album's for that matter. Mirror Eye is the imaginative culmination of a period of exploration for Psychic Ills. A transcendent combination of musics that symbolizes how far the band has and continues to evolve beyond genre - and a fun listen too. This release will be followed by a mini-lp in the winter of other unheard material from this period.

Schaeffer, Janek
Extended Play [Triptych for the child survivors of war and conflict] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US LIMITED EDITION 600. LINE is proud to release the latest audio work from British composer and installation artist Janek Schaefer based on his installation of the same title. Installation Reviews: "a piece to return to again and again... haunting and lulling" [The Wire, UK] "so inspirational, and in many ways very spiritual" [Gerry Turvey] "I was so deeply touched by your piece" [Mandeep Kaur Samra] Red is the colour of Life, of Death, and of Love. Scarlett, my first child, was born in 2005, and since then I have been very aware of how lucky we all are. have been constantly comparing this to the fact that my mother was born in Warsaw in 1942 - the epicenter of World War II. How opposite can two beginnings be? This inspired me to produce the Extended Play installation, which continuously and positively celebrates hope and new beginnings, for child survivors in all situations around the world. The original idea for the composition came from learning about the 'Jodoform' system of secret musical messages that were broadcast by the BBC Service, during music they played was given a particular meaning, which was interpreted by Polish Underground. Discovered from the original Jodoform logbook, that the lovely Polish folk song 'Tango Lyczakowskie', was broadcast on the day my mother was born. Song describes how children in 1918, had been forced to take up arms, in defense of their town. From this tune, chose a short rising musical phrase, and with my arranger Michael Jennings, developed a ten-minute score. Each of the three solo parts was then recorded separately, edited, and cut onto vinyl. In the gallery, 3 x Cello EP's, 3 x Piano EP's, and 3 x Violin EP's are played at either 33, 45, or 78rpm using nine retro record players. These play continuously, and each was modified to stop playing briefly in response to the audience moving around the exhibition. This has the effect of changing and extending the composition, so that it is never the same again.

Shearer, Rachel
Fakerie (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US Fakerie is a digital séance of aural and visual sculptures by the New Zealand artist Rachel Shearer, formerly known as Lovely Midget. Filmed in an environment to facilitate focused listening, Fakerie is as much for the ears as the eyes. Glowing white lights ebb and expand from darkness in shifting series - like clustered stars - as penetrating resonances of acoustic and electronic overtones decompose into the tiniest sand-like components. Traces of Mary Lucier's mid-1970s burn films and Francois Bayle's musical investigation into the physical and psychical world is present. Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin/Puzzle
Split (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 27TH)
PS, US Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin is a critically acclaimed, blog-adored band that have shared the stage with Mute Math, of Montreal, Sound Team, Catfish Haven, Chin Up Chin Up, and more. They've headlined in Europe and even made their way to their namesake's homeland of Russia. Spin declared them the band that "could succeed The Shins," and enthusiastic press rolled in. After releasing their sophomore album, Pershing, earlier this year, the band has raised the bar even higher and gained the attention of many listeners, drawn to their massive hooks and quirky melodies. Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin entered the studio yet again to record these two exclusive 7" songs, and asked their friends from the band Puzzle to do the same. Puzzle is a four-piece band from Liverpool, England that ShoutandTwist.com calls "feel-good indie pop but in a really amazing magical way." Every 7" includes a free digital download code. Spencer, Angelo
Music Is My Sweat b/w Great Salt Lake (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US 2 songs: My Music Is My Sweat b/w Great Salt Lake "My Music is My Sweat" began with a conversation between Karl Blau and Angelo Spencer about how music is similar to body odor and, like everyone's stench, one's music is also unique and identifiable. Angelo's music is as raw as sweat. Recorded in one day, on one take by Blau, this 7" is a puddle of twitchy urgency. Generally a one-man band, this recording is fleshed out with frantic drum fills and fidgety keys by L'Orchidee d'Hawaii soon after they finished a tour with Spencer. "My Music is My Sweat" is the sprint and "The Great Salt Lake" is the cool-down, exasperated pause needed to sprint and sweat again; embellished with distant whistling - like the playful intermission of a spaghetti western - and Spencer is the wandering hero. "Music should always be like that." featuring L'Orchidee d'Hawaii

Szajner, Bernard
Some Deaths Take Forever (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, UK LTM presents the second in a series of expanded CD reissues by visionary French electronic composer Bernard Szajner. Originally released in late 1980, Some Deaths Take Forever is a deeply emotional, sometimes disturbing musical account of the feelings of a prisoner on death row, conceived as the soundtrack to a short film by Amnesty International. The album mixes dark, angular and unnerving electronic textures with dynamic rock arrangements, guest musicians including Bernard Paganotti of Magma. Reviews rated the album highly: 'A modern electronic masterwork - one of the most exciting and innovative piece of electronic music to be released this year' (Melody Maker); 'Frantic, outraged music shames the bulk of oscillator nuts peddling their dodgy little repetitions around' (Sounds); 'Unquestionably one of the decade's most accomplished fusions of sophisticated electronics and driving rock' (NME). The expanded 60 minute CD features three previously unreleased bonus tracks, recorded in 1982.

Szajner, Bernard
Superficial Music (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 13TH)
PS, UK LTM presents the first in a series of expanded CD reissues by visionary French electronic composer Bernard Szajner. Originally released in late 1981, Superficial Music incorporates elements of his previous album Visions of Dune played backwards at half speed and treated digitally, as well as the three-part suite Oswiecim, an imagining of the Holocaust informed by the experience of his own family. Sometimes harmonious, sometimes unsettling, Szajner's music is never less than extraordinary. Reviews rated the album highly: 'Superficial? No, superlative music! If you care at all for soundscapes that eschew cheap escapes, this album will do far more than tickle the surface of you mind' (NME); 'A significant success - a wholly involving and frequently disturbing blanket of continually contorting synthetic sound' (Melody Maker). The expanded 65-minute CD features three previously unreleased bonus tracks, recorded in 1982. Bernard Szajner biography: Born in Grenoble in 1944, Szajner first made his name as a lighting designer for Magma, Gong and the Who. Having invented new instruments such as the laser harp used by Jean-Michel Jarre, Szajner began to record experimental, conceptual albums of his own, including Visions of Dune (1979), Some Deaths Take Forever (1980), Superficial Music (1981) and Brute Reason (1983). He has also recorded as Zed, and was one half of The (Hypothetical) Prophets. Since the mid 80s, polymath Szajner has worked as a painter, filmmaker and theatre director.

Tallest Man On Earth, The
Shallow Grave (PRE-ORDER: DELAYED, SALEABLE TBA)
PS, SWEDEN Incredible new album, Pitchfork approved. If you thought the EP was great, just wait until this arrives. Folk album of the year? Price to be confirmed, it might be better, it won't be worse. PITCHFORK: "While it's understandable to be skeptical of another skinny dude with a mustache, a guitar, and a worn-out copy of The Anthology of American Folk Music, the more time you invest in Shallow Graves, the more you'll realize how unusually memorable it is. Ultimately, Shallow Graves transcends comparison-- which is saying an awful lot, given the popularity of its prototype-- and Matsson is a natural-born folksinger, earnest, clever, and comforting."

PS, US VINYL VERSION of TTMOE's first album and his debut EP! Limited to 1000! Whether it's The Tallest Man on Earth's lo-fi tape recording technique or penetrating vocal stylings, Shallow Grave authentically represents a tradition of Americana folk rock that was popularized during the 50s and 60s. PASTE MAGAZINE: "The Tallest Man on Earth, like Dylan before him, grounds his songs in Son House- and Blind Willie McTell-inspired guitar work, lofting tempestuous vocals overhead and garninshing liberally with "babe"s and "honey"s." The Mexican Summer release follows his critially acclaimed 2007 five-song self-titled EP and a well deserved Pitchfork 8.3 album rating for Shallow Grave. The Tallest Man on Earth, will be playing to North American audiences this December alongside genre companion Bon Iver.

Tillman, J.
Vacilando Territory Blues (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US Since 2004, J. Tillman has quietly been releasing records, some of limited quantity, some mostly available in Europe, but for the most part, unheard. The borderline-alienating starkness and well lived-in narratives of his first two records, I Will Return and Long May You Run, J. Tillman (released in limited runs of 150) endeared him to fans of and drew comparisons to the likes of Nick Drake, Will Oldham, and Jason Molina. In 2006, after three months in Europe touring on his third and most accessible album, Minor Works, Tillman recorded his fourth collection of songs at home with his brother and roommate. Cancer and Delirium struck a perfect balance between the intimacy of his earlier releases with the nuanced, melodic sense of Minor Works. Each song imbued with the same strikingly disconsolate singing and devastatingly poignant prose that Tillman is known for and accented with some of his most gorgeous, spare arrangements. Vacilando Territory Blues, Tillman's fifth and first with Western Vinyl, came as the result of three different recording attempts in 2008, in which entire sessions were scrapped, and ultimately the majority of the final material would surface and be recorded days before mastering. The push and pull of this record veers sharply from the tone of Tillman's previous releases, which for the most part, adhere to a singular mood and stylistic execution. The tension dynamically between songs like "Firstborn" and "New Imperial Grand Blues" is hard to reconcile, but the way the songs are framed herein belies a cohesion not dissimilar to classic oddball albums such as After The Goldrush. Sacrifcing a stylized album, the breadth of Tillman's abilities as a songwriter emerge on VTB, in an array of musical personalities bound by his lyrical existential dread and economical arrangements. In 2008, Tillman joined longtime friends and musical collaborators, Fleet Foxes. Casey Wescott and Christian Wargo both appear on VTB, along with several regular contributors who were willing to adapt to several idiosyncratic recording obstructions. Vacilando Territory Blues is far and away Tillman's most collaborative effort, and the most striking moments here are those seemingly stumbled upon, without resorting to second-takes or microphone re-adjustment. This album casts a strange perspective on what people have come to expect from Tillman's music, but these songs, though oddly untethered, reveal the process of someone coming to terms with the prospect of making music in the void.

The Airing Of Grievances (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US Patrick Stickles, lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter, launches his insights across a wall of defiant, triumphant rock anthems, which have earned comparisons to Bruce Springsteen, The Pogues, and The Replacements. "Patrick Stickles howls with anguish way beyond his 22 years, often cramming lyrics into tight spaces just to make sure he gets the last word in. The drama's more Boss than Bright Eyes, fueled by blue collar frustration and, most notably, beer" - Pitchfork.

Week That Was, The
S-T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 26TH)
PS, US 2008 debut album from the British Electro Pop outfit, chiefly Field Music dude David Brewis' big brother, and featuring contributions from Field Music colleagues. Musically the record is an expansive tribute, paying direct (and indirect) homage to the wildly ambitious Linn Drum and Fairlight experiments of Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, and Tin Drum-era Japan. Fused with typically detailed arrangements and a sense of drama, this makes The Week That Was a brain-shattering, 32-minute epic, straying far outside the conventions of most indie-guitar music.

Welcome Wagon, The
Welcome to the Welcome Wagon (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US This debut album by The Welcome Wagon unveils a ramshackle sing-a-long enterprise of a Presbyterian pastor (the Rev. Vito Aiuto) and his wife (Monique) wrestling out the influences of folk music, religion, popular culture, and church tradition in a collection of songs that is as soulful as it is good-humored. This gorgeous brew is reflected in the group's repertoire, which unflinchingly consolidates a vast history of "sacred" song traditions: from old Testament psalms, to Presbyterian Psalters of the 17th century, to iconoclastic pop innovators of the 1960s (The Velvet Underground), to charismatic catholics of the 1970s (Lenny Smith), and even into the melancholy lovelorn pop of the 1980s (The Smiths). Recorded, produced, and arranged by Sufjan Stevens.

Woolson, Raymond Scott
Broken Things Mended (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 10TH)
PS, US Raymond Scott Woolson has been creating guitar-driven ethereal music for many years now. Broken Things Mended is his fifth full-length album of celestial shoegaze sound-scapes. A long year in the making, and several more months of perfecting during the mixing and mastering process, this release continues Woolson's exploration of soaring guitar epics and pastoral mood meanderings. A fair amount of variety went into the mix. Here a shimmer of dreampop, there a buzz of psychedelia. A brush of piano, a burst of drums, and on several occasions even a very commendable imitation of a string orchestra. Those are in fact guitars. An ocean of guitars. The songs of Broken Things Mended are bright and uplifting. There may be a passing touch of melancholy, a brief wistful feeling, but absolutely no doom and gloom. Woolson will not add to the burden of darkness in the world. His is the music of light and love, of faith and hope. These songs look forward and upward. Victories are won, promises are kept, and broken things are mended.
