Parasol New Arrivals • October 9, 2007

Hey Friends,

OK, I’m a late bloomer but can someone tell me how in the world I slept on The Band’s – Music From Big Pink? I’ll go so far to say that the audio gods are shining down on me today. I know, I know, this update is supposed to be about hot new releases but today there's just something about this record that’s tripping my trigger! While on the topic of classic records, The Move’s Self Titled and Shazam albums have just been re-released along with Move/ELO founder Roy Wood’s – Boulders. All re-mastered, of course, with bonus material and all that. Super cool, Ladies and Gents.

Well then, down yonder there are plenty of (new) amazing releases to scroll through such as: Band Of Horses, Jens Lekman, C-U natives The Fiery Furnaces, Sunset Rubdown and Rockfour.

It’s all around you,

Royal and Paul

Askew, Ed
Little Eyes
PS, US Recorded in one continuous take in NYC, 1970. Made with little more than magnetic tape, Ed's voice, and the stunningly modern arrangements of his beloved Martin Tiple, "Little Eyes" is as grand, sad, and beautiful a statement as can be expressed. His off-key lilt hangs like a seductive pink mist, and settles deeply; you'll hear these songs long after they're over. Attempting to publicize an unreleased record, Ed did a string of radio gigs between NY and New Haven, and the best of them are collected here. Lovely and wild.

Band Of Horses
Cease to Begin
PS, US For a lot of reasons, Cease to Begin is the perfect title for this new record. Though they worked with producer Phil Ek again, as they did on Everything All the Time, much has changed for Band of Horses between the fairly recent then and now. Band members have come and gone, including Mat Brooke, who left to pursue other interests and his own band. Core members Ben Bridwell, Rob Hampton and Creighton Barrett moved from Seattle to Mt. Pleasant, SC, to be closer to their families. And, close friends and family have come and gone-some far too early. Necessarily shot through with these experiences, the songs on Cease to Begin are strikingly beautiful, if less elliptical and more straightforward, dealing with the reconciliation of attachment and detachment, the strength that's found through suffering, and the understanding that we are as significant as we are insignificant. It's also a great rock record.

Banton, Pato
Never Give In (20th Ann)
PS, US His second album remains his best-selling album to date & the most celebrated by the numerous American musicians who have come to proclaim him among their greatest influences. The Beastie Boys famously sampled his lyrics on their Pauls Boutique record, and Queen Latifahs biggest hit, "U.N.I.T.Y.", was a direct interpolation of his original lyrics as well. This 20th anniversary edition has updated special packaging & bonus tracks.

Bevel
Phoenician Terrane
PS, US Phoenician Terrane, BEVEL's first release for Contraphonic, is a record of densely orchestrated American wonder. This is the Great American Songbook as discovered by the descendants of Harry Partch and Charles Ives upon a rock in the sand. As a whole, Phoenician Terrane evolves over a cinematic arc, leading the listener across pages of a sonic story, a historical journey parlayed through a personal lens. Languidly plucked guitar lines pave trails amongst violin and flute embellishments, transient Gypsy-laden tones swash about warm synthesizers, with everything cast in a soft, psychedelic haze. Further buttressed by Nuon's haunted vocal delivery, the songs create a tapestry of tales related in the realm of the surreal. Assembled with a cast of contributors featuring members of Califone, Boxhead Ensemble, and Manishevitz, among others, Phoenician Terrane is BEVEL's finest work to date.

Blakes, The
Self-Titled
PS, US Pitchfork has praised the band's "swampy guitars, twitchy rhythms, and power-pop vocal harmonies" of their self-titled debut album. The Blakes recall the stinging catchiness of early Who, Kinks, and other spitfire rock bands. Thirteen tracks full of chaotic and sensuous rock and roll.

Celebration
The Modern Tribe
PS, US The second record by this Baltimore-based three-piece is an album of sublime colors, rich textures, and glorious, ascending melody. Guest appearances by TV On The Radio, Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), and members of Antibalas. "Nothing sounds like The Birthday Party. Sadly, not even Nick Cave. Yet Celebration has just enough holy chaos and free-flung tribal drumming to warrant the much-hyped comparison...nothing short of brilliant" - Magnet.

Cherry, Don
Live at Cafe Montmartre
PS, US More than any other artist in the jazz of his era,Cherry pioneered the music's internationalist nature that has now come to be commonly accepted as an integral part of its character. The individuality of Cherry's contribution to the history of jazz has often been unfairly obscured by his admittedly important association with the music of Ornette Coleman. While the (pocket) trumpeter's position as Coleman's front line partner in the altoist's first revolutionary quartet was indeed a major one,Cherry's role as one of the founders of the genre that is known today as "world music" is equally significant. -Russ Musto.Incl bonus DVD w/ selections of almost every ESP artist. Durutti Column
Idiot Savants
PS, UK The Durutti Column follow-up 2006's Keep Breathing with a brand new album, Idiot Savants. Written and played by Vini Reilly, with drums and percussion from the Guru himself, Bruce Mitchell. The Durutti Column emerged from the late 70s Manchester punk scene and has remained one of the most intriguing, enigmatic (and arguably under appreciated) acts in the country. The band name is derived from a 60s anarchist movement. - an anarchist group in Europe who published a book with a sandpaper cover so that it would destroy all the other books on the shelves. He borrowed the practice of using sandpaper as a packaging medium, until record shops forced him to stop, fed up of the stock surrounding the Durutti Column being destroyed. Despite the tremendous critical acclaim that greeted his music, Vini Reilly seldom performed live during the early 1980s. The days of gigging with Joy Division were over and Vini became a virtual recluse. However his reputation grew and by the 90s Durutti Column's legendary status made them a cult attraction all over the world, a position they maintain to this day.

Elastik Band, The
S/T
PS, US Known almost exclusively for their extremely politically incorrect 1967 Nuggets cult favorite "Spazz" (track #2), the Elastik Band was actually a highly talented group that could play just about any popular style in vogue during the mid-to-late 60s, much like the Knickerbockers. Thus, at times they sound like the Byrds with vibraphone ("Mixed Emotions," #3), the Mamas & the Papas ("All I Need," #10), the Syndicate of Sound ("Lose Yourself," 19), and even what sounds like a parody of the Zombies ("Fire and Desire," #9). But the group excelled at the 12-string guitar and multipart harmonies of groups like the Byrds and Beau Brummels, as many tracks on the disc attest. They also had a few curiosities besides "Spazz": "Popcorn" (#7) being the closest, though "Mrs. Pig" (#17) would also qualify. The last track is from an Australian radio broadcast in 1968 in which the DJ begins playing the song "Spazz" but cuts it off before completion and calls it "offensive." This disc, released on lead singer David Cortopassi's private label, represents the band's complete output of their own compositions (they also recorded a Jimmy Webb tune at one point), some never before released. Hopefully the release, though belated, will show that the Elastik Band was far more than a novelty one-hit wonder.

Four Freshman
Graduation Day
PS, UK The greatest vocal group of all time. one whose influence on both contemporary jazz and rock is impossible to overestimate. Their unique style of harmonizing was established by the recordings on this very collection. French Impressionists, The
Fete
PS, UK 22 tracks. LTM is pleased to announce a brand new CD album by The French Impressionists, the cult Glasgow 'new jazz' combo associated with Postcard Records and Les Disques du Crepuscule. The French Impressionists first emerged in 1981 via the Postcard Records school, when founder/pianist Malcolm Fisher made his first recordings with members of Aztec Camera and The Jazzateers. A more permanent line-up released A Selection of Songs on Les Disques du Crepuscule, as well as the Christmas single Santa Baby, and found lasting success in Japan. More recently, Malcolm Fisher has based himself in Milan ( Italy ), releasing three albums of solo piano music, and pursuing parallel careers in teaching and photography. Malcolm has now gathered together a new group of French Impressionists, including singers Cressida Jenkins, Sara Cicenia and Alberto Antoniazzi, as well as multi-media artist Sally Titterington. The resulting album, Fête, recorded during 2006 and 2007, offers a beguiling mix of jazz, lieder, tone poems and modern composition. Several lyrics are texts by poets Amelia Rosselli and William Blake. Stand-out tracks include A Pretty Rose Tree, The Chimney Sweeper, Se Per Un Canto, Lips and the charming instrumental title track. The deluxe booklet featuring a selection of colour images by Malcolm Fisher, and cover art by designers Moderne. Also available: The French Impressionists A Selection of Songs (LTMCD 2415), Malcolm Fisher Dream, Malcolm Fisher Dress, Malcolm Fisher Seeds.

Frisbie
New Debut
PS, US Salon.com once called Frisbie, "One of the best & most ambitious pop bands in America." One listen to "New Debut" re-affirms that praise. "New Debut" is the long awaited follow up to "The Subversive Sounds of Love", a critical darling that cast Frisbie as power pop saviors. (The Chicago Tribune's Greg Kot called it "the power pop album of the year.") . While "The Subversive Sounds of Love" was rooted in the pop of the 60's, "New Debut" reveals a love for the guitar rock of the 70's. So much happens in these 3 minute tunes as producer Matt Thompson breaks out the harmonic density of every song. Frisbie still boasts 2 of the finest singers anywhere, yet the emotions of their soaring vocals are more deeply revealed in the unexpected rhythms & timbres of the music. In short," New Debut" will kick you in the head & the pants.

Grainer, Brian
Eight Thousander
PS, US Attacknine Records is proud to present Brian Grainger's debut solo release "Eight Thousander". The first solo release from Brian Grainger (Milieu, Free Festival, VCV) comes in the form of another set of eight warm, blissed-out pieces. Completely improvised on guitar and organ with no overdubs, Eight Thousander is a hazy, crackly record that evokes thoughts of a mountain hike towards the end of the Summer. Melodic guitars overlap with still-life organs in an aged collage wrapped with brittle paper - the sound that Brian's music has come to be known for. Brian currently resides in South Carolina and jointly runs the Second Sun Recordings label with David Tagg. Track List: 1. Drowned, 2. Whitecaps, 3. Oceanic, 4. Above the Sky, 5. Graves
Seldom Slumber
PS, US The band revolves around songwriter Greg Olin's unique vision, blending accessible, melodic songwriting with skewed lyrics, breezy arrangements, a mid-fi production aesthetic, and Olin's earnest guy-next-door vocal delivery. On this outing, Graves spices up the mix with tints of soul, Latin & Cambodian rock. There's percussion in spades, pop-ballad female backups, and organ flourishes, but the secret weapon may be the cache of mellow grooves. The rhythm section hits an appealingly amateurish Motown stride & rides it through much of the track list. The band includes Cory Gray (Norfolk & Western, Desert City Soundtrack) and Nate Ashley (Left Handed,Knw-Yr-Own) as well as the usual smattering of Portland indie ninjas: Amanda Lawrence (Norfolk & Western, Loch Lomond),Kyle Field (Little Wings), Brian Wright & Tommy McDonald.

Harnetty, Brian
American Winter
PS, US American Winter = holler musics woven with archival field/radio recordings, meeting the 21st century. The Berea College (Kentucky) Sound Archives holds non- recordings documenting more than 75 years of Appalachian history and culture. In late 2005, the Berea College Appalachian Music Fellowship Program was made possible by a grant from the Anne Ray Charitable Trust, established by the late Margaret Anne Cargill. The Fellowship program supports scholarly research in Berea's collections of traditional music. "Brian Harnetty was among the first Appalachian Music Fellows. Initially overwhelmed by the collection's richness, he quickly immersed himself in field recordings, radio programs, and oral history interviews. We conversed daily about what he'd heard, the concept of tradition, and collections as a type of composition. The resulting pieces take the known, unknown, and forgotten, reworking them into new cloth and exposing new layers of humanity."-John H. Bondurant, Sound Preservation Archivist, Berea College.

Hermit Crabs, The
Saw You Dancing
PS, US Rich with instrumentation and recorded with notable guest musicians including members of Teenage Fanclub and Camera Obscura, 'Saw You Dancing' is one of those classic debut albums that impresses right from the start. The album kicks off with 'Tonight', a folk-tinged indiepop song with prominent violin and percussion, and 'Goodbye My Friend,' a bouncing jangle pop hit with great harmonies. 'Closet Fan' is a country-tinged pop masterpiece with great lyrics, hypnotic percussion, splendid violin and more exquisite harmonies, while 'Lean Free Summer' is straightforward pop that swings along nicely with keyboards, handclaps, and violin. Meanwhile, 'Bad Timing' adds depth to the album with impressive percussion and a bit of a soulful twist. 'Friend's Folk Festival' makes a case as one of the album highlights with splendid guitar work and a sprightly melodica, while 'Secrets and Lies' is a brooding folk pop song that is captivating in its simplicity. 'Feel Good Factor'-the song that first got the band noticed as one of the winners in Scotland's Burnsong song writing competition-shows that The Hermit Crabs are indeed worthy of the accolades suggesting they are next in line to join the Scottish pop elite currently fronted by fellow Glaswegians Belle and Sebastian and Camera Obscura. 'Third Time Lucky' is lilting guitar pop with exquisite vocals, and the album concludes with the multi-layered and hauntingly beautiful 'Soul Mate.' A remarkable debut album from new Scottish pop favorites, 'Saw You Dancing' is another dazzling
success for Matinée!

Love Fluxus
PS, US Trevor Kampmann, creator of the project hollAnd, is somewhat musically prescient. As proof, you need only give hollAnd's 1997 album Your Orgasm a cursory listen & then jump ten years hence & listen to anything by The Postal Service. Jettison the rough sonic edges on that early disc & trade out his sexually explicit lyrics for some saccharine 'emotional' ones & you're on to the recipe. Love Fluxus is musically agnostic at a level few artists are capable of achieving; a genre-blending anachronism.

Hot Gossip
Geisha Boys and Temple Girls
PS, UK Having previously scored a UK hit in 1978 with 'I Lost My Heart To A Starship Trooper', dance troupe Hot Gossip took the brave move of recruiting British Electric Foundation's Martyn Ware and Ian Marsh - recent ex-members of Sheffield electronic synth-pop pioneers Human League - to produce their debut album "Geisha Boys & Temple Girls" in 1981. Ditching most of the material that had already been recorded with producer Richard Burgess, Marsh and Ware decided to utilize material they had co-written for The Human League (Morale, The Word Before Last and Circus Of Death from their debut album Reproduction); their latest project Heaven 17 (Soul Warfare and Geisha Boys & Temple Girls); a song from an offshoot of The Human League called The Men, who had released one single on Virgin (I Don't Depend On You) - and a couple of other cover versions which included a song from the seminal Brian Eno produced Talking Heads album Remain In Light (Houses In Motion) to create this electronic curiosity which is reissued for the first time on Repressed. Howard, Norman
Burn Baby Burn
PS, US Thought to have been lost, ESP recently recovered this master tape by Norman Howard (once side man to ALBERT AYLER), & is now releasing this exceptional studio album for the first time. Despite the profound obscurity of Norman Howard's music, and that of his mate Joe Phillips, it's crucial as a window not only into the influence that Albert Ayler carried in creative music, but into how the Aylers affected the musicians of their hometown. Most importantly, this reflects on how vital free music has been at the local level, where it remains so to this day.-Clifford Allen

You wouldn't think so from the folky, acoustic intro to "The Show Tonight," which opens their eponymous debut album, not, at least, until Engelbert's electric guitar storms in and kicks the song toward hard rock. But Johnossi delight in bashing around genres, from the bluesy ballad "The Lottery," which slams into Southern rock and boasts a "Free Bird"-styled soaring guitar solo, to the porch picking blues of "Man Must Dance," which slides surprisingly into sharply angular post-punk. "Dance" is irrepressible and "Execution Song" equally so, an insatiable slab of '60s garage. "Rescue Team" positively swaggers around British Invasion territory with a fabulously infectious singalong chorus, mod for the modern age, Engelbert's Little Richard's "oohs" adding to the fun. Less catchy but more intense is "Press Hold," a superb mix of late-'60s-styled rock with an indie inflection and a Western flair. "Santa Monica Bay" also slides between genres, a supple shift from coursing R&B into '70s-styled hard rock, while "Glory Days to Come" is equally driving, a Western with gloom-pop overtones and hard rock underpinnings. The music may shift dramatically, but the pair's themes rarely do, with most revolving around soul-searching and/or angsty situations. Some are poignant, like the wishing-for-a-happy-home "Family Values"; some are reassuring, like the self-explanatory "There's a Lot of Things to Do Before You Die"; although (uniquely) the pretty, yearning "Summerbreeze" is outright nasty. With plenty to chew over lyrically and music to knock your socks off, Johnossi prove the power of two's might." (Jo-Ann Greene)

Jones, Sharon & The Dap Kings
100 Days, 100 Nights
PS, US Soulful new album! ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The album is much smoother, even gentler, than her previous releases, and though the Dap-Kings still power their way through the ten songs with bright horn licks, inspired drumming, and staccato guitar lines, there's a deeper, bluesier edge to the record, heard in "Let Them Knock" or the slower "Humble Me." "Don't let me forget who I am," Jones croons in the latter, her voice rising to a sweet falsetto at the end of the phrase. It's a very clean record, not over-produced but well produced, with a lot of great pop moments tucked in between the brassier, funkier bits. The title track relies on a sultry organ and a minor vamp to make its point, while "Something's Changed" uses strings and punctuated sax and bass as the singer drops a bit of her lungs out, bringing a kind of immediacy to her words, as if the actuality of the situation around her hasn't quite set in enough for her to wail about it, as if she's just realizing it and listeners are right there to hear about it. But that's the magic and power of Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings: their ability to convey passion and pain, regret and celebration, found in the arrangements and the tail ends of notes, in the rhythms and phrasing, and it is exactly that which makes 100 Days, 100 Nights such an excellent release."

Jonesy
Masquerade: The Dawn Years Anthology
PS, UK Recently cited by "CLASSIC ROCK" magazine as "The Best Prog Band You've Never Heard", Jonesy were one of the most innovative British bands of the early 1970's. Placing a Mellotron at the center of their sound and taking influences from the worlds of jazz, rock, classical music and folk, Jonesy recorded a single and three albums ("No Alternative", "Keeping Up" & "Growing") for Pye's progressive Dawn imprint. Drawing comparisons to KING CRIMSON and YES, Jonesy were more that. Classic Rock's Malcolm Dome declared recently; "Jonesy were more than mere mimics of any Fripp-ery. They made some fascinating records". Now, for the first time, ESOTERIC gathers all of Jonesy's recorded output for Dawn Records and gathers it on this deluxe 2CD set, with all tracks remastered from the original master tapes. "Masquerade" is certain to attract an excellent response.

Last Days
These Palaces Are Now Ruins
PS, US Last Days' follow up to 2006's "Sea" "These Places Are Now Ruins" is by the artist's admission a personal journey about revisiting the past and accepting the present is something we can all truly identify with. The album tells, strictly through feelings, of expectations, disappointments, distance, and the futility of attempting to reclaim lost memories. "These Places Are Now Ruins" is not so much a concept as "Sea" but instead a loosely chronological album documenting thoughts and emotions experienced when returning home after having moved away. The result is often dark and abstract when recalling fears or memories we can't forget but also touching on moments when one explores hopes for the future and the impact loved ones and special times have had on our lives. Last Days' sound remains at times cinematic yet slightly lo-fi and now features more live instrumentation giving "These Places Are Now Ruins" a wider diversity and more fullness of sound. Few things stay the same and those things we wish would change never do. "These Places Are Now Ruins" examines theses themes and over its duration accepts that it is sometimes best for us all to leave the past where it is...

Lekman, Jens
Night Falls Over Kortedala
PS, US Like a modern day Chet Baker, Jens loves to sing about heartache. This is his first album in over three years, and Kortedala refers to a neighborhood in his hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden - "a depressing suburban hell". It also refers to a vague musical pop sound with hints of tropicalia that has been coming out of Gothenburg's clubs the last few years. "Night Falls Over Kortedala" features cushy studio versions of many previously unreleased live favorites and guest vocals from label-mate Frida Hyvonen and El Perro del Mar.

Math And Physics Club
Baby I'm Your's EP
PS, US Fantastic new EP from Seattle hipsters Math and Physics Club featuring four exclusive new songs! Lead track 'Baby I'm Yours' is a swinging pop hit on which MAPC drummer Kevin was encouraged to break out the drumsticks instead of brushes so it's really cooking! It's a brilliant little number with jangling guitars and great vocals that will have you singing along from the very first listen and reaching for the replay button just as it ends. 'Nothing Really Happened' is a special one as it is allegedly the first original Math and Physics Club song and was (in different form) one of the four songs on the original demo tape sent to Matinée back in 2004. This newly recorded version features expanded percussion and a strong violin part from Saundrah that provides a lovely counterpoint to Charles' vocals. A long overdue release for an early classic! 'In This Together' began taking shape around the time of the 'Movie Ending Romance' EP in the spring of 2005 and was featured in live sets almost immediately. Its arrangement evolved over time and the intertwining melodies of the vocals, guitar, and violin on this recording are superb. Think early Beautiful South and you're nearly there. 'Do You Keep A Diary' finishes off the EP with a bit of a surprise. The song was written around the time of the album recording sessions last year but didn't seem to fit on the album for some reason. MAPC bassist Ethan snuck into the recording studio one day and muted everyone's tracks, turning it into a little synth-pop number that evolved over time into this brilliant version balancing electronic and real instruments along with superb vocals and a bit of a John Squire guitar explosion from James. New songs from Math and Physics Club are always instant classics and this EP is perhaps the strongest one yet!

Most Serene Republic
Population
PS, CANADA Another Canadian troupe sharing traits of genius with Broken Social Scene. AMG: "At this point in time in the new millennium, Toronto rock might as well be considered its own subgenre. The success of the Arts & Crafts label and the group Broken Social Scene (and artists like Feist, Amy Millan, and Kevin Drew) has cemented the sound and idea of the city in the minds of indie rock fans across North America, even the world. The second full-length by the Most Serene Republic only helps to confirm that this is no fluke. Sporting intricately laid instrumental parts, none of which stay consistent throughout an entire track, anthemic, sometimes obscured or impenetrable male and female vocals, and an aggressive rhythm section, Population is a record that refuses to sit and meditate upon one particular thing for too long, instead approaching a theme (both musical and lyrical) from as many different angles as possible."

Ravens & Chimes
Reichenbach Falls
PS, US Grown from the halls of NYU, Ravens & Chimes' debut introduces a youthful, optimistic lightness in the form of eclectic, ear-grabbing tunes. CMJ called it "beautiful" and "unique", evoking comparisons at times to either Wolf Parade or Voxtrot - a sound urging youth to grow up to be young again - no justifications necessary. Lead vocalist Asher Lack repeatedly asks himself, "Is it possible to change without abandoning the person you were?" "Reichenbach Falls" encompasses the raw quality of youth in a split open-heart combination of first lust, disappointment, and self-doubt.

Savvas Ysatis + Taylor Deupree
The Sleeping Morning
PS, US The collaborative efforts of Athens native Savvas Ysatis and New Yorker Taylor Deupree were well known in the early and mid 1990s through their work as SETI, Futique, and Arc, as well as their soundtrack to Japanese architect Toyo Ito's famed Tower of Winds building in Yokohama, Japan. After going their separate ways - Ysatis to recording for Tresor in Berlin, and Deupree to founding the 12k label - they have united again for their first project in nearly 10 years. Almost all of Ysatis and Deupree's projects were founded not only on conceptual ideas, but on technical processes as well, setting rules and restrictions on themselves to help focus their creative energies in the endless playground of the studio. Whether it was the complex sound design of SETI or the cassette-tape-sourced sample manipulation of Tower of Winds, Ysatis and Deupree continually reinvented themselves, moving from ambient, to lounge, to minimal techno. Their new EP, The Sleeping Morning, was created during a week-long visit from Greece to the US. Ysatis and Deupree wanted to freely create and see what came naturally after a 10-year hiatus from working together in the studio. However, their session quickly turned into an album guided by a select set of instruments and methods which led to their most unique work to date. The music flowed naturally, and the 10 years disappeared into a day.All of the instrumentation; acoustic guitar, autoharp, various bits of percussion, and analog synthesizers, were performed directly to multi-track with very little editing (they preferred to re-take rather than edit). The duo recorded much of the sound with with microphones to capture roomtone which created a warm, organic and often playful mood. Loose drums, the squeak of a monosynth and lush pads from the Jupiter-8 make The Sleeping Morning appear at first as an experiment in micro-folk but when vocal tracks are added a whole new world of songstructure and post-something is created. The four tracks they recorded hint at a variety of new avenues that Ysatis and Deupree can explore. Their extensive music careers and long history of collaboration and friendship have given them experience rich with insight and experimentation - and with the low price of airfare and the affordability of decent grappa, there will certainly be a chance to continue what they began 14 years ago. a note on this release's package: the sleeve for The Sleeping Morning is printed on 100% recycled stock with 3 different biodegradable inks. Even though stores demand cds to be shrinkwrapped (a still non-ecofriendly process) the use of safe materials in the package itself is our attempt at reducing the amount of un-needed waste on our planet.

Sleeping States
There the Open Spaces
PS, UK Sleeping States is the evolving musical project of Markland Starkie, a Midlands born artist who has spent the first half of his twenties living, working and studying in London. Having grown up with classical music training, Markland became enamored with the possibilities of noise in a musical context and so began his playful experiments with noise in various bands, including noise pop outfit Kaito. After moving to London and feeling a subsequent sense of dislocation, Markland began a series of home recordings of short songs from the heart that were more minimal in both volume and arrangement, with melodies taking more of a central role. Sleeping States was born. Armed with an electric guitar, found sounds, vocal samplers and a four-track recorder, Markland transformed his experiments with sound in to a fully-fledged body of work. Ever prolific and true to his DIY punk rock roots, Markland set up his own label, Kontra Punkte. Sleeping States had an instant outlet. With a self recorded and completely self released CDR album 'Distances are Great' in 2004, followed by a number of cassette and CDR EP releases on his own and other DIY labels, Sleeping States becomes a live entity with the addition of drums and guitar, firmly expanding and shaping the musical identity of the project while totally kicking ass live. In May 2006, TOME released the debut 7" single 'Rivers / London Fields' and so followed a busy year of critical acclaim, and jaw_dropping live shows with the likes of Blonde Redhead, Electrelane, Viking Moses, Casiotone For The Painfully Alone and Archie Bronson Outfit, among others.

Suishou No Fune
The Shining Star (Live)
PS, US Suishou No Fune [soo-ee-sho no foo-nay] was formed in 1999 by guitarists Pirako Kurenai and Kageo. They were quickly acknowledged in Japan for their unique take on Japanese psychedelic traditions but it wasn't until their inclusion on PSF's Tokyo Flashback Volume 5 they became that their international prominence began to grow. Heavy lyrical emotion transcends linguistic barriers and Pirako's blown out fuzzy free-dream guitar work is an alternate universe psychedelic Japanese shoegaze. They are a forest at night drenched in echoing reverb and soaked with deeply spiritual/emotional melodies. Awash in waves of fuzz Suishi No Fune's control of detail amidst chaos and heavy emotions is their deepest asset. Here's to the past. Here's to the future. Somewhere between Fushitsusha and Windy & Carl there is Suishi No Fune. "The group's sound runs from massively distended nod-outs that recall parts of the first Fushitsusha album through weird duo tracks that orbit a parallel universe where late-period John Fahey was the prime influence on Charalambides, infernal Dead C/Gate style guitar abuse and achingly beautiful comedown ballads. The twin vocalists are massively different in their approach, with Pirako singing in a high wayward style that's all throat and no lungs while Kageo works from the other end of the pipes with a ripped Father Yod/Jim Morrison/Keiji Haino polyglot. Simply one of the greatest out-of-nowhere groups to come out of the Tokyo underground in years and the undisputed stars of PSF's recent Tokyo Flashback 5 compilation." --Volcanic Tongue

Sunset Rubdown
Random Spirit Lover
PS, US The woven lyrics and singular songwriting style heard in Sunset Rubdown invoke a mythological world, where magical narratives and tiny metaphors give shape to ordinary objects in the room; sometimes beautiful, sometimes beastly. The moniker was first born to bear the solo bedroom recordings of Spencer Krug, but has since evolved into a full-fledged band, involving the vital contributions of fellow Montreal residents Jordan Robson Cramer, Michael Doerksen, and Camilla Wynne Ingr. Random Spirit Lover" was recorded in early 2007 at Breakglass Studios in Montreal with Jace Lasek (also of The Besnard Lakes) and Dave Smith. A prolific and talented musician, Krug is also a member of Frog Eyes and Wolf Parade, and, in the fall of 2006, he collaborated with Dan Bejar of Destroyer and Carey Mercer of Frog Eyes to form Swan Lake, recording their first album for Jagjaguwar called "Beast Moans". Jordan Robson-Cramer is currently the brain behind Magic Weapon as well as a member of Miracle Fortress, and Michael Doerksen produces his own solo work under the name of Deep Sleepover.

It's about the corruption of an idea that is at first welcomed & later destroyed. Feat. Jehna Wilhelm, guitar/vocals & Mark McGee, electronics/sound manipulation. They've been involved w/ this project for 4 yrs & been supported by an ever-changing cast of players & musicians.

Trembling Blue Stars
Beautiful Blank (DELAYED)
PS, SPAIN White vinyl. Limited edition 1000 copies. TREMBLING BLUE STARS have always featured many previously unreleased tracks on their non-album releases (only with the extra tracks included on the two singles taken from their first album on Elefant Records they could have released a full album), and this EP is again a deliberate attempt by the band to stand up for the single in an age when they can be little more than trailers for the album, which is seen as the main event. We think that, in the age of the internet and digital downloads, it's the song that is important again; and we have always loved singles anyway, so this release is for us as dear as the previous album. So, the "Exploring the shadows" EP features four exclusive songs that were recorded as part of the album sessions, and were treated with as much care and given as much time. The lead song, the sunny and melodic "Beautiful blank", is sung by Beth Arzy. In the form of an infectious, radio-friendly guitar pop song, it tells of an Edie Sedgwick-esque character and is titled after a phrase in Andy Warhol's book "From A To B". After a start with a rather optimistic sound, Bobby takes the lead vocal on another upbeat guitar pop track, "As easy as being alone", which goes back to the more melancholic and dreamy indie-pop style we have learnt to love from him. The EP is complete with the introspection meets experimentation of "Outside looking elsewhere", and the more experimental pastures of "And then silence", with its gloomy atmosphere and reverberated vocals. This last song ends up so abruptly ("and then silence") that you can't help but press 'play' and start again. And then again, and again. You're under the spell of the best pop music. The 7" has a radio edit version and a new version of "Say Goodbye To The Sea" original version of "Say Goodbye To The Sea" was on "the last holy writer" album. Tracklist: 01. Beautiful blank [Radio Edit] 02. Say Goodbye To The Sea II.

Tulsa
I Was Submerged
PS, US As comforting & timeless as the songs are, they retain a melodic eeriness that could leave the listener feeling unsettled were they not so impeccably crafted. A dreamy concoction of reverberated vocals & sepulchral guitars layered upon fervent percussion & the defining touch: the asymmetrical tones of a Fender Rhodes, which cascade throughout the recordings. Its often the Neutral Milk Hotel or Neil Young tag that is pinned to Tulsas sleeve, and they wont deny that. But theres actually much more that they try to accomplish. If theres a middle ground between the Carter Family & Can, Tulsa has discovered it.

Valentina
La Valentina (ON SALE)
PS, MEXICO Valentina González is probably one of Mexico's most intriguing vocalists. A songstress who possesses a beautiful and soulful voice that recalls the mannerisms of Jeff Buckley, Sidsel Endresen or Camille. Her debut album takes Jazz, Gospel, Mexican Folkloric influences and filters them through a minimal polyphonic prism. The result merges the traditional influences into a contemporary sound that is sparse and elegant - much like David Sylvian's Secrets of the Beehive or Nico's The Marble Index updated old musical forms into new ones. Singing in both English and Spanish, Valentina takes us across a lush collection of songs that benefit from her exquisite taste and adventurous foray into experimental song crafting. "La Valentina" is the third release of the Mexican label Verdigris a sub-label of Static Discos.

Love Goes On! : A Tribute To Grant McLennan
PS, US Regarded as the quintessential cult band, the Go-Betweens' rich songbook has stood the test of time better than essentially all of their contemporaries. While Robert Forster brought edginess to the Go-Betweens' art, it was the perfectly complimentary melodic sense and inherent sweetness of his songwriting partner Grant McLennan that represented the "pop" side of the band. In Grant's solo recordings, especially, both heartbreak and hooks abound. His sudden and tragic loss last year due to a heart attack stunned fans worldwide and compelled Rare Victory Records to compile a heartfelt tribute to Grant's legacy. Love Goes On: A Tribute to Grant McLennan is presented in full-color digipak with insert booklet containing never before published images of Grant and The Go-Betweens as well as tribute liner notes by The Big Takeover founder and editor, Jack Rabid. Love Goes On features 17 artists from around the globe, each well aware of Grant's tremendous influence on their own music, as well as on the contemporary indie music scene. The artists contributing exclusive tracks are a "who's who" of the worldwide community of indie artists, with legendary and emerging talents, alike, paying tribute to Grant: The Bats (stalwarts of New Zealand's jangly pop music), Brookville, The Clientele, Future Pilot AKA (The Soup Dragon's Sushil Dade's collaborative project, featuring his former bandmate Duglas T. Stewart of BMX Bandits on vocals), GB3 (The Underground Lover's Glenn Bennie's collaborative project, featuring Angie Hart of Frente on vocals), Luke Haines (The Auteurs, Black Box Recorder, Baader Meinhof), Paul Handyside (Hurrah!), Ivy, Kelman, Ed Kuepper (The Saints, The Laughing Clowns, The Aints), Mellow Drunk, The Orchids, Portastatic (Mac McCaughan of Superchunk), Private Eleanor, Stars, Trembling Blue Stars (the newest project of The Orchids' fellow Sarah Records labelmate, Bob Wratten of The Field Mice and Northern Picture Library), and Phil Wilson (The June Brides). The love for Grant and his body of work courses through this disc, resulting in a collection of songs that are timeless. Contributing Artists and Tracks: The Bats: Right Here Brookville: Haunted House The Clientele: Orpheus Beach Future Pilot A.K.A.: Dusty in Here GB3 (with Angie Hart): Devil's Eye Luke Haines: You Won't Find it Again Paul Handyside: Bachelor Kisses Ivy: Streets of Your Town Kelman: Apology Accepted Ed Kuepper: Finding You Mellow Drunk: Boundary Rider The Orchids: Magic in Here Portastatic: Bye Bye Pride Private Eleanor: Love Goes On Stars: Cattle and Cane Trembling Blue Stars: Coming Up for Air Phil Wilson: Black Mule.

Walker, Scott
And Who Shall Go to the Ball? And What Shall Go to the Ball?
PS, US Instrumental mini-album from The Dude Himself. PITCHFORK: "The most dramatic aspect of the piece, however, involves reconciling the fact that Walker doesn't sing a single note from start to finish. If the absence of a voice when you're expecting it can play games with the mind, then the absence of Scott Walker's-- a tremendous, trembling voice that sounds deep, eerie, gorgeous, and terrifying all at once-- arouses a special kind of dramatic tension. For its voicelessness alone (as well as its short 25-minute running time), And Who Shall... can't be classed as a Walker album proper. But it goes a long way toward revealing the strengths of an artist who has established himself as a serious composer as well as a monumental presence-- even when he's not there to be heard."

PS, US Wyatt's career began forty years ago drumming and singing for Soft Machine, a post-psych outfit tied to the "Canterbury Scene" of the late 60s that yielded Pink Floyd and Gong, among others. On this, his ninth album, he collaborates with Brian Eno, Paul Weller, Phil Manzanera, and a small orchestra of string, woodwind, brass, and percussion players. Divided into three acts, "Comicopera" is an epic genre-bending allegory told through Robert's fragile tenor voice.

A Taste Of Ra
Morning of My Life (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 23RD)
PS, SWEDEN This is the third and final album in the A Taste of Ra trilogy. Nicolai Dunger, and the cloak of mystery behind the Taste of Ra project has captivated many with its various incarnations of free-folk meanderings, Tim Buckley jazz-howl and Swedish pastoral indie-hum. Dunger describes Morning of My Life as follows: "When we moved to the tent and the light was golden and we were young, and the magazine was all there was to bring, and you woke in the night when the birds were singing just for you and the smell of soil and the warm breath over through you, ohh it moved you. All there was to it, was the morning of my life." He also describes that the overall idea behind the first two A Taste of Ra records was for pure vocal and instrumental experimentation -- using recording techniques on a more personal level. On this final record in the trilogy, he takes a different approach, starting off with one song that he developed together with Swedish musician, songwriter and producer, Jari Haapalainen. The song naturally broke up into six movements, creating a film-like, dramatic pattern, and Johan Berthling made some beautiful arrangements for three of the movements. Starsailor-esque vocals, jazzy horns and loose, clattering drums mix with piano, harp and guitar arpeggios -- just as much of an Impressionistic song cycle as Van Morrison's Astral Weeks.
