40Winks
Sound Puzzle Sampler
PS, US Vinyl 12" sampler from the second full length from the
Belgian duo known as 40winks. They've been making and releasing music
for over 4 years and have previously released on several underground
Japanese labels, as well as a few in Europe, and we are proud to say
this will be their first appearance on a US label, Merck Records.
Sound Puzzle is a smooth storybook like collection focused on the
aesthetics of raw jazzy hip hop and the complex layering and arrangements
of samples from a variety of sources. The vinyl has a careful selection
of about half of the cd release tracks, cutting out some interludes,
but getting straight to the meaty bones of some delicious hiphop.
This collection of beats and instrumentals was composed and polished
in 2006 with a strong influence of early 90's hip hop production and
excessive crate digging. Merck DJ's should feel right at home mixing
this in with some Aphilas or Malcom Kipe. Limited to 600. Portion
on colored vinyl.

Alps, The
Jewelt Galaxies / Spirit Shambles
PS, JAPAN The ALPS are Jefre Cantu-Ledesma (aka Tarentel), Alexis
Georgopoulos and Scott Hewicker, a loose-knit collective of atists/musicians/writers
very active in San Francisco's vital underground scene. The group
specialize in spontaneous compositions of the out-limits variety,
offering a SOUND that is ancient and new, intimate and enormous, ecstatic
and expansive, and illuminated with white light. And JEWELT GALAXIES/SPIRIT
SHAMBLES is their 1st full album collecting the first two CDR releases
from The ALPS. Following a specially tuned internal compass that leads
them from open meadows and rushing rivers to urban chaos and decay,
The Alps use a variety of sound sources (Wooden Flute, Tabla, Orchestra
Bells, Electric Guitar, Omnichord, Microphone, Clarinet, Violin Bow,
Acoustic Guitar, Organ, Shakers, Mixer, Voice, Cassette Tape, Sleigh
Bells. This was recorded with one microphone in Scott Hewickers's
living room mostly in one session on November 14, 2005 and a bit in
August earlier in the year. Of their debut JEWELT GALAXIES, the good
people at AQUARIUS RECORDS had this to say : "Glistening meditative
soundscapes well-suited to gazing at frosty mountain peaks such as
those of their namesake. Squeaky clarinets and alien flute melted
into whirls of swish and whoosh, all laid over drones and instrument
hum and tape hiss. Quite beautiful." The group are currently
working on a follow-up record with engineer/producer Philip Manley
(The Fucking Champs, Trans Am, Oneida). In the coming months, the
group will release a 12" on visual artist Chris Johanson's new
imprint Awesome Vistas. The group will also contribute a song to Devendra
Banhart's forthcoming tribute compilation devoted to the works of
the Clive Palmer. (Text by Jefre Cantu-Ledesma / The Alps).

Audiofly X
4 Play
PS, GERMANY Upcoming UK duo Anthony Middleton and Luca Saporito aka
Audiofly X make their debut on Get Physical with a three-tracker that
sounds fresh and entertaining. Lead track "4 Play" does
what its title suggests, teasing the listener and moving in a number
of different directions. Just when you think that you've got used
to the cold, skeletal drums, Audiofly X seduce with haunting chords,
and by the time that the reconstituted trance riff drops, the listener
will be ready to explode with passion. "Are We There Yet?"
is a real hands in the air, smiley-faced moment, combining old-school
rave samples with ultra modern metallic drum sounds, powerful bass
pulses and austere chords.

Buffalo
Mother's Choice
PS, AUSTRALIA "The final 2 Buffalo albums have long been unjustly
underrated when compared to the 1,2,3 punch of Dead Forever..., Volcanic
Rock and Only Want You For Your Body. Management's decision to sack
'uncontrollable' original guitarist John Baxter and pursue a more
commercial direction was also borne of the frustration of the constant
grind of the road, declining record sales and no support from radio
or TV. It was probably a mistake; Buffalo never really recovered from
the change in dynamic, and the next 2 years saw a revolving door of
replacement guitarists. However, to write this period off is also
a mistake. Both albums contain terrific tracks that can sit proudly
amongst any of Buffalo's earlier classics. Mother's Choice: The band
wanted to call the album Songs For The Frustrated Housewife or Thieves,
Punks, Rip-Offs & Liars but were overruled by their record company.
Norm Roue (Band Of Light) joined as a second guitarist, but before
the twin guitars of Roue and John Baxter could gel, Baxter was ousted
and replaced by Karl Taylor. The band's sound changed immediately,
with a more predominant rock 'n' roll edge, songs like their cover
of the Chuck Berry classic 'Little Queenie' and 'Lucky' were perfect
vehicles for Roue's boisterous slide and the southern rock-like 'Taste
It Don't Waste It' was positively funky! Unfortunately, before Buffalo
could build on the momentum of their new direction, Roue left and
was followed soon after by Taylor. New guitarist Chris Turner joins
before the album is released. Both titles are presented in 6 panel
digi-paks with 20-page booklets filled with rare photos & liner
notes by Ian McFarlane. They have been digitally remastered, and each
release has 2 bonus tracks."

Buffalo
Average Rock 'n' Roller
PS, AUSTRALIA 'My brief from the management was to sort 'em out and
make a commercial record,' Chris Turner declares. The first thing
the band did was to record 'Rollin'' and 'Hotel Ladies' as a single.
The A-side in particular was an enticing effort, a loping slice of
country-soul replete with Tice's heavily echoed vocals, a sing-a-long
chorus, hand-claps and female backing vocals: perfectly suited for
radio airplay. There are no two ways about it, Buffalo was a commercial
entity by then yet the radio networks still refused to give their
singles a spin! 'Hotel Ladies' on the flip side, with its slow-burning
build up and rousing, guitar-heavy climax, held promise for an interesting
album to come. Colin Stead joins as second guitarist, but leaves midway
through his first tour. Pete Wells, frustrated by the new direction,
leaves to form Rose Tattoo and is replaced by Ross Sims. Soon after,
Buffalo break up - a sad end to one of Australia's greatest-ever bands,
but one whose legend has grown over the years. Finally, with the release
of these 2 titles, all 5 studio albums have now been reissued in deluxe
versions by Aztec Music." Digitally remastered, includes 2 bonus
tracks.

Bun Hunga and His Combo
Relax
PS, SPAIN "Limited repress of this little known gem by Dutch
Hammond king Roland Thyssen under his Bun Hunga pseudonym which has
already been tipped as one of the best exploited albums of the continent.
Bun Hunga and his Diplomatic Music (as it appeared in early 7"s
and some issues of the album) recorded this killer exploitation album
which, unlike many of its counterparts, is a solid killer from start
to finish (not a single dumb filler in sight!). Originally released
in Belgium, and licensed to Spain and Argentina, some of the tracks
were later repackaged in a couple of albums (Trumpet Prayer and Music
in Transit) by the mysterious Golden Music Orchestra. Thyssen's organ
dominates the album all over, an 11-track selection covering a wide
array of moods, grooves and tempos: from the classic Euro sounds of
'Happy Starting' and 'Privilege For Organ' to the the exotic influenced
grooves of 'Play For Suzy' and the incredible 'Bangala' via the mysterious
jazz of 'Quiet Ballad' or the relaxed 'Cabal In The Night.' A mixture
of go-go Latin rhythms, funky arrangements, masterful studio trickery,
exotic atmospheres, top band action and screaming fuzz parts. Think
The Underground Set, La Formule Du Baron, Jungle Obsession, Mandingo
and other groovers of the era... this is European exploitation as
its best."

Cantu-Ledesma, Jefre
The Garden of Forking Paths
PS, JAPAN Jefre-Cantu Ledesma is a San Francisco based artist and
musician. He is a founding member of Tarentel and since 1995 has recorded
and toured in the US, Europe & Japan with the group. In 2000 after
a much needed break from the band schedule he began making solo music
under the name Colophon. In 2003 Love Loops was released on the Temporary
Residence label as part of their mail order only Travels In Constance
series. In 2004 he started the Root Strata label and has released
recordings from a wide variety of musicians such as Yellow Swans,
Grouper & My Cat is An Alien. The Garden Of Forking Paths is the
first full length solo CD by San Francisco based musician Jefre Cantu-Ledesma.
Eschewing the laptop processing of his earlier work as Colophon, the
album was created with an assortment of tape recording mediums (Cassette,
Micro-Cassette, Reel to Reel tape machine) and a small arsenal of
guitar stop boxes used on wide variety of instruments from electric
guitar to bowed gong. In addition to recording at his home studio,
various sites found in the near by Marin Headlands just north of San
Francisco were used for live outdoor site specific recording. With
its title taken from a short story by Jorge Luis Borges, the album
is overtly concerned with dreams, memory, death, birth, infinity and
the possibility of a labyrinth like approach to music making, where
songs are not written as much as they slowly emerge out of the process
of music making.

Deathprod
Deathprod (4XCD BOX)
PS, NORWAY Repressed! What was once one of the most acclaimed releases
of 2004 will be available one last time. Beautifully-packaged 4CD
boxset (4 digipaks in a heavy-duty box, nearly all black packaging).
Includes the 2004 album Morals And Dogma (which is also available
separately), plus reissues of the 3 prior albums: Reference Frequencies,
Treetop Drive, Imaginary Songs From Tristan de Cunha, with 32 pages
of liner notes, all eloquently designed by Kim Hiorthøy. These
four CDs here document the period from 1991 to 2001. Treetop Drive
from '95 and Imaginary Songs From Tristan Da Cunha from '94, both
remastered and included here in full, were originally released in
limited editions of 500 copies. In his music laboratory in Oslo, Deathprod
(Helge Sten) works at the threshold between the latent potential of
musical technology and the forms of life that sound assumes: the life
of vibrations; the life of imagination. Deathprod is suggestive of
last and first things, physical decay and the processes of production,
decomposition and composition, the breaking down of sound that precedes
fresh musical creation. A guiding principle in Deathprod's laboratory
work is that his music should have the capacity to evoke images without
becoming excessively programmatic. He references the soundtracks made
by Florian Fricke and his group Popol Vuh to accompany films by Werner
Herzog. The Reference Frequencies series of nine live electronic improvisations
was made in 1991, recorded to cassette using unpromisingly basic electronic
equipment. Loops mysteriously slide from the groove of repetition
into swirling forms and cryptic atmospheres. Layers thicken, some
congeal and sink as others thin and evaporate in glistening spray.
Figures stalk through clouds; strange topographies form from molten
matter then dissolve in crystalline streams; curious stories in remote
languages cry out to be deciphered. Imaginary Songs from Tristan da
Cunha is an extraordinary adventure in ethnographic surrealism that
began when Sten graduated from the Trondheim Art Academy. Tristan
da Cunha is the most remote island in the world, a volcanic mound
in the distant reaches of the South Atlantic. Treetop Drive, from
1993 and 1994, opens with a symphonic ending, a dying fall severed
from some massive structure and reanimated as another music. Last
and first things; the afterlife of a final chord; classical closure
reversed by means of sampling and a homemade feedback device.

Fennesz
Endless Summer
PS, AUSTRIA This reissue of Christian Fennesz's breakthrough classic
Endless Summer has been remixed, remastered, and re-released with
two extra tracks. Originally released in 2001 by Mego, Endless Summer
brought his name and music towards the first steps of mainstream recognition
with its micro sounds and warm guitar, harkening the dreamy serenity
and quick-fading sentimentality of a California sunset. Following
on from the more experimental Hotel Paral.lell and the Beach Boys
homaged Plays single, Endless Summer brought the guitars more to the
front, the electronics shimmered more, and the melodies shined more
brightly. It went on to be a classic of its time, topping many end
of year polls. This new definitive edition is newly mixed by Fennesz,
resulting in a more open-sounding version of the tracks, especially
the marimba driven "Caecilia" and the hypnotic "Before
I Leave," and the towering "Happy Audio." It is also
re-mastered by Denis Blackham at Skye, and has beautifully photographed
artwork by Jon Wozencroft. In addition to the original 8 tracks, it
contains 2 extra titles: "Badminton Girl," originally released
in 2001 as part of the Split Series #15 12" with Main on Fat
Cat Records, now out of print, and "Endless," which is previously

Frost, Thomas and Richard
Visualize
PS, UK 2002 release. "Of all the known or rumored 'lost' albums
from the odd pop era when everyone wanted a go at a super-pop classic
a la Brian Wilson, this is perhaps the most thoroughly lost...as the
only essay in this style by the artist, it was a case of never before
and never again! Richard and Tom Martin were mainstays of The Art
Collection aka Powder, America's closest shot at the pop-art sound
of The Who or The Creation. After a number of classic (and now ruinously
expensive) singles failed to set the charts alight, a change of direction
was clearly called for. Calling themselves Thomas and Richard Frost,
the brothers signed to Imperial Records and made a number of classic
pop singles, some of which indeed hit the lower reaches of the charts,
all in preparation for their masterwork, Visualize unfortunately,
reorganization at Imperial after their acquisition by Liberty Records
meant the album was cancelled: at such a late stage that production
masters complete with catalog number and half-completed artwork have
languished in the vaults until now. Tom and Rich's next project was
an accomplished country-rock album for UNI Records, the breathtaking
pop experiment of Visualize remaining a closed chapter...until now."

Fumi, Satoshi
Peak
PS, GERMANY Satoshi Fumi is one of the most exciting house producers
from Japan. During the mid-1990s, he grew interested in the Detroit,
Chicago and New York house movements, and absorbed the different sounds
of electronic music throughout that period, helping him to shape,
develop and influence his own unique style. Satoshi's production skills
have matured enough today, allowing him the freedom to create, and

Gaiser
Neural Block
PS, CANADA Gaiser ups the ante with his second Minus EP. Following
on his And Answer EP, Jon Gaiser cements his growing reputation with
another finely-crafted selection of tunes, demonstrating a deep understanding
of the intimate mechanics required for minimalist sound sculpture.
"Neural Block" employs a subtle use of reverse snares, scuttling
percussive bleeps and subliminal samples, while "Half Life,"
with its séance-like voices and liquid grooves, swells to the
maximum. Then there's the nocturnal landscape of "Seepage,"
complete with sliding delays that slowly space out before giving way
to moody synth-pulses and a rocking metallic snare solo.

Another Miserable Day
PS, BELGIUM "San Francisco's most German electronic creeper Hans
Grüsel does it again, after seeing their amazing performance
at No Fun this year I couldn't wait to do a record with these weirdos!
Amazing layered synth madness!! Using a mountain of instruments I
never heard of, these 2 long compositions give you the worst melancholic
Sunday afternoon feeling, the party is over, and all you're left with
is a horrific hangover that will never leave you, thinking of the
carnival the night before, this is another miserable day indeed, you'll
have to wear the hottest costume again, your head is made of wood
and nothing makes sense anymore... this is beautiful analog electronic
composer/concrète madness with an old piano trumpet sauce,
every time you'll find new sounds!!! Also, be sure to find them live
somewhere, the only band that can actually play music while wearing
huge wooden houses on their heads... the cover for this record is
the second in a series of 5 LPs with 6 panel fold out covers by Snotyfus!
This one has a huge green wooden house raster on the outside and a
full color village krank on the inside! Limited to 500 copies!"

are: Organism (1975), 9 Variations (1966), Highway (1958), Longhorn
(1951). "Organism is Academy Award(TM)-winning film maker Hilary
Harris' epic vision of New York City, shot over 15 years (1959-1974)
during which time he pioneered and contemporized time-lapse film making
techniques to achieve a unique experiential view of the world we inhabit.
Hilary Harris is one of the few really interesting film makers in
the country... keen and penetrating visual perception... a search
for the understanding of the complex world about us... a rare combination
of qualities necessary to making great films." -Leo Hurwitz,

Hayleck, Andy
Two Gong/Wire Pieces
PS, US "Baltimore-based sound artist Andy Hayleck has worked
primarily with field recordings and bowed metal over the past seven
years in improvised settings, installation and solo composed works.
His previous recordings include The Disappearing Floor (Recorded),
a suite of edited field recordings and vibrating metal sounds; Various
Recordings Involving Ice (Fairfield/HereSee), a set of field recordings
of crystallized H2O; and his bowed saw and cymbal performances with
fricative free music collaborative group Trockeneis (Ehse). Two Gong/Wire
Pieces presents side-long live-to-tape performances using a special
system which Hayleck has invented and with which he has performed
widely - bowing a long wire attached to a Chinese gong, allowing for
special control of the irrational vibrations of the metal plate through
careful control over the tension of the wire and place and style of
bowing. The resulting masses of beating tone-forms are lakes and pools
of eddies or whirlpools born from a deceptively simple and carefully
considered system and a seemingly enormous pair of ears."

Howlin' Magic
Howlin' Magic
PS, US "With no discernible connection to any current micro-scene
or music-making community, Howlin' Magic, aka California free-blues
guitarist Jesse Rakusin, works in relative isolation, laying down
impossibly heavy blues licks, amp noise, and expressionistic drum
tracks at a breathless clip. In early 2006, Rakusin began circulating
a self-titled CD-R of twelve private, four-track recordings. Those
fortunate to hear it were fairly astonished. This was the sort of
record that might have emanated from Siltbreeze or PSF in the early
'90s, a devastating set of home-recorded, white-hot splatter-blues,
at once formally way-out and ultra-primitive in its execution; and
its chief 'architect' was this kid from Santa Cruz whose influences
included Hendrix, Muddy Waters, Simply Saucer, White Heaven, and Stevie
Ray Vaughn. Holy smoke! Rakusin's command of the blues, combined with
his seemingly insatiable appetite for psychedelics, has yielded one
of the most scorching records to issue from the U.S. underground in
years. There's nothing ponderous or 'searching' here - the hippie
affectations and inchoate mysticism that infect our current cultural
environment are all but absent from Rakusin's purview. Instead, what
we've got here is a successful marriage of raw garage-psych and highly
advanced freeform noise."

Isles, The
Summer Loans
PS, UK This is a CD single and 7" release by NYC's The Isles
(Benjamin Haberland, Chris Bordeaux, Andrew Geller, Tim McCoy). It's
been a good stretch of success for the New York foursome, with their
debut album Perfumed Lands ("A slow burn album for all seasons..."
(8/10) -NME) prompting positive reviews, and so it's no surprise they
want to extend it for as long as possible. The new single "Summer
Loans" has an unmistakably East Coast groove but such an intrinsically
familiar tapestry of woven guitar parts and vocal melody, you'll swear
you've been getting up to dance to it for the last ten years. Lovingly
put together in their self-made studio, Summer Loans manages to capture
the echo of the great New York outdoors as well as the claustrophobia
of the great New York sprawl. They're a curious distillation of Brit-pop
and East Coast punk and honorary Mancunians in spirit and sound.

Javerling, Rickard
The Three Sisters EP
PS, UK Swedish travelling minstrel Rickard Jäverling presents
further moments of heartfelt, folk-inspired beauty. With banjo, drums
and guitar, "Three Sisters" (which also featured on his
Two Times Five Lullaby) distills a Tortoise-inspired post-rock intelligence
blended with traditional folk. "Västbacken" is a hazy
instrumental piece of folk poetry bringing to mind bubbling streams
and the beauty of a childish midsummer adventure. The EP's defining
moment is the 7-minute epic "Sultan," which takes the Chicago
post-rock formula and re-contextualizes it for 2006, giving us something
both reflective and quietly jubilant. Yesternow artists Shoreline
finish off with a remix that injects the original track with a sense
of fun and playful abandon.

Last of The Real Hardmen
10,000 Miles
PS, UK . "Chris Summerlin's debut album under the boastful, ironic
pseudonym Last of the Real Hardmen follows six years of releasing
lathe-cut vinyl and hand-crafted CD-Rs that received tiny circulation
to no more than a small circle of fans. The quality of the tunes on
offer suggest this is a third or fourth album rather than an excitable
first. Summerlin is a virtuoso guitarist and lays down electric guitar
patterns with drums, field recordings and the occasional bottleneck
to provide depth and variation. Instrumental music can be hard to
keep interesting and this is where Summerlin's skill really kicks
in, injecting his form of purist instrumental music with nods towards
inevitably John Fahey merged with the full-bodied widescreen emissions
of Tortoise. The lovely folks at Birdwar have also included 6 tracks
from Summerlin's ultra-limited lathe cut 10" originally released
on Lone Hand recordings and this faultlessly adds to the mass of an
almost worryingly beautiful album. Despite costing 30p to make on
a cassette 4-track, this is otherworldly and timeless music."

Magic Whispers, The
Carousels and Music Boxes
PS, SPAIN Ana Laan (Rita Calypso) and Natalia Farrán (Bathing
Beauty) are indeed The Magic Whispers and they return with 17 sublime
songs: a perfect combination of acoustic and electric guitars and
gorgeous vocal harmonies with blissful pop melodies. A world without
The Magic Whispers? It's just too horrible to comprehend. Their private
rooms and secret chambers were divulged at Yin yang (2003), and now
there is a second chance to penetrate their soul through Carousels
and music boxes, an amazing collection of superb pop music. Song for
song, this record is one of the most satisfying Siesta discs in the
last five years thanks to the sophomore momentum. With their infallible
knack for pop melodies, and the winsome charm of their voices, they
are on the cusp of naivety and sophistication. The Magic Whispers
are a little ray of sunshine in our otherwise barren lives. After
their acclaimed debut album, The Magic Whispers did not want to rest
on its laurels and were anxious to bring another platter of peerless
musical treasures. Only the deaf could resist the exquisite tunes,
fertile romanticism and the ingenious arrangements combined with those
voices to create something remarkably fresh and pure. Their appeal
should catapul them to microfame. The Magic Whispers are a great group
that never goes out of style. This record will solidify themselves
as one of the best girl groups (Strawberry Switchblade, Ephemera,
Pipettes, Siddeleys, Girls at our best, Carousel, Popinjays, Marine
Girls, The Would-be-goods, Sambassadeur, Dolly Mixture...). They resemble
the traditional pop of the 1960s and 1980s added a modern twist. There
are coquettish songs that are refined with playful intonations and
light instrumentation, romantic anthems to love, and different flirts
that are meant to bring joy, light and inspiration to the pop scene
of the present days. Every generation, of course,
has its invigorating progenitors of taste. For nerds here is a list
of the original songs and legendary and obscure bands behind them:

Martinez
Restructured Layers
PS, DENMARK This is the Out of Orbit label's first CD release, providing
a comprehensive and exciting mega-mix of their musical catalog, mega-mixed
by DJ, producer and label-boss, Martinez. Techno has always been a
musical genre driven by novelty and technology. Fast kicks and new
sounds, feelings and experiences are what we cherish. The ability
to project the listeners "out there" into the final frontiers
of space and sound has always been the goal of all extraordinary techno
music. To simply make a "normal" mix CD was never an option
for Out of Orbit. Using cutting edge technology and displaying in
what direction the future of mixing might take, Triple-O presents
Restructured Layers, for people who have been looking for a way to
enjoy their music in a comfortable way without getting into vinyl.
Perfectly geared to fit in between both a sweaty club experience and
a nice home listening session, this CD brings out the best of both
worlds. This CD is an extension of Martinez' acclaimed DJ gigs, bringing
you a world-class mix experience. With all their releases cut up into
loops and pieces, Martinez has woven a beautiful and intricate carpet
of sounds, putting two and two together in order to create something
bigger and more beautiful than its mere parts: pure alchemy, in other
words, with the full CD as a constant mix throughout the full 76 minutes.
Blending pieces of up to 7 or 8 different tracks at the same time,
you've never heard anything exactly like this, although Richie Hawtin's
DE9|Closer To The (R)Edit would be the closest in terms of mixing
technology. Triple-O has put down a lot of effort in order to bring
you this next-step experience to and they are damn proud of what they
have created. Featuring artists Phil Stumpf, Willie Graff & Kyle
Errison, Martinez, Nima Gorji, Reynold, Lowtek Soundsystem, Zvukbroda,
Dibaba, Mars Fellows, Felix Houzer, Jussi Pekka, Robert Babicz, Trentemøller,

with a great new single on Audiomatique. The title-track is an amazing
deep space track built up on a heavily dark bass and some extraterrestrial

"Woodenbox" on the B-side is as far out as the A-side, but
a bit less dark. A cool sliding groove spreads a deep but slightly
progressive feel. Two excellent tunes from Captain Martinez' spaceship

Mecki Mark Men
Marathon
PS, Sweden "This is the 3rd album by Mecki Mark Men. Recorded
in the CHESS studio in Chicago while Mecki Mark Men was on a North
American tour in 1970. Basically it is the same heavy acid space rock
as on their previous Running in the Summer Night album. Mecki Mark
Men was (together with Hansson and Karlsson) Jimi Hendrix's favourite
Swedish band. When Jimi came back from his Swedish tours he probably
told the tales about the wild Swedish Hammond organ tormentor Mecki
Bodemark, who did the same things with his grinding organ as Jimi
did with his guitar. For those of you who yet have not heard MMM I
can tell that they sound like a mix of Teargas, High Tide and Jimi
Hendrix but with a wild organ player and the mighty Kenny Hakansson
on lead guitar, with lots of fuzz and wah-wah, and sitar! After this
album Mecki quit and the band changed their name to Kebnekajse. This
CD includes their Sonet album from 1970 plus a commercial jingle.

Mops, The
Psychedelic Sounds In Japan
PS, US "The Mops are one of Japan's best known 'Group Sound'
(GS) bands, particularly noted for their psychedelic period. The group
was founded in 1966 by high school friends Mikiharu Suzuki (drums),
Taro Miyuki (guitar), Masaru Hoshi (lead guitar) and Kaoru Murakami
(bass), playing mostly instrumental rock like that of the fabulously
popular Ventures. The Mops album Psychedelic Sounds in Japan, released
in April of 1968, was full of flower power flourishes, including cosmic
artwork, ethnic clothing, fuzz guitars and sitar playing. It included
covers of the Airplane's hits 'Somebody To Love' and 'White Rabbit,'
The Doors' 'Light My Fire,' Eric Burdon's 'San Franciscan Nights'
and The Animals' 'Inside Looking Out,' as well as the super Mops theme
song 'I Am Just A Mops' (which later became a cult favorite after
being included on the obscurities album Nuggets 2). Despite being
widely considered a psychedelic band, the Mops' original songs were
more garage band sounding. They also had a dark side that was very
much not a hippie vibe. While most bands were playing love songs,
The Mops album had a song called 'Blind Bird' about a terrible dark
world, which contained the lyrics 'please kill me,' This led to the
song being left off some reissues (but it is included on this one.)

style of vocals and composition has earned her critical acclaim around
the world. After cutting her teeth as a member of the jazz avant garde

she made further history for her pioneering work with the Moog synthesizer
(she was the first to use it live and to use it to electronically
modify vocals). Her critically acclaimed X-Dreams, released in 1978
after her move to the UK, is an emotionally and sexually charged voyage
through minimalist 'free form' musical environments. An oneiric journey

tells itsself. Dirt mixed with crunchy melody and excitement, makes
this mix of bouncing bubbly blobs an irresistible must-have. Low end
sub-loving bass lines and analog riffs all together with a voice that
tells it like it is, 'Uh Hugh.' This side also holds the fort as far
as the old-school is concerned. Deep, lush and full-on non-stop madness.
Jump in and roll in it. 'Viography': this vibrant electro pumper is
another one of Pig & Dan's more positive good time tracks that
has made the duo's name more present in the boxes of the less techno
oriented DJs. Its feel and vibe still hold the electronic imprint
to be expected of their previous works, but with a melodic edge that
is unique and has a smile appeal that reaches peaks of musical bliss.

years that has been finely tuned and polished this fall, it has worked
itself out to over 60 minutes of music. Uniquely nostalgic, it rises
up to overtly dense 8-bit pop, and down into off-world colony lounge
music. It continues the timeline and progression of his work into
more sophisticated production methods and complex sounds and beats.

The mood is darker, more epic, grander and even more beautiful than
ever. "Pet grief" is the best songs Pet Shop Boys never
wrote and the album you'd hoped My Bloody Valentine did after "Loveless".
The key to what makes it so special, what makes it all sound so much
like The Radio Dept. might be the ever present melancholy that permeate
everything they write. It's been three years since the debut album
"Lesser matters" was released (two since it was released
by XL in the UK) and even if the band has released two Eps, "Pulling
our weight" (2003) and "This past week" (2005) since
that "Pet grief" is definitely the most anticipated Swedish
album in a very, very long time.

prog-rock with forays into jazz territories. Well-structured and punctuated
by interesting time changes and a skillful use of wind and string
instruments, they are definitely at least on par with labelmates Leaf

the remarkable vocal timbre of the singer also places the album a

Schnerider, Guido
Transmission
PS, GERMANY After his groundbreaking debut album Focus On, Guido Schneider
returns with a new stunning EP on Poker Flat. Transmission is even
more proof of Guido's great production skills, presenting two excellent
tracks which explore his signature sound even further. The title track
"Transmission" is a pure rhythmic and percussive affair,
showcasing a vast array of drums from kongas to bongos, and sticks
to shakers to build a hypnotizing, highly energetic soundscape. A
buzzing chant by Florian Schirmacher adds a sacral atmosphere to the
track. "Halo" manoeuvers through mainly percussive terrain,
but contains more impulsive and funky elements. Check the well-timed
cue of the deep bassline - this is ace and gives this track an extra
claim to fame.

Star You Star Me
Simple Things
PS, GERMANY This is the debut full-length release from Finland's Star
You Star Me, the electronic dance music band for the 21st century.
Jani Lehto had been playing around with computers and synths his whole
life when the deep house boom of the mid-'90s struck his home town
of Turku. His house collective DSE reached for that warm New York
sound, but with Star You Star Me, a new path was chosen. Tatu Metsätähti
has already gained worldwide reputation in underground electro circles
with his band Mr Velcro Fastener and Mesak solo project. His synth
programming skills and musical ideas and visions double the creative
potential of the duo. In late 2001, Tatu and Jani started swapping
their unfinished tracks: if Jani had an idea for a track he gave it
to Tatu, and then Tatu would continue the process, or vice versa.
The first tracks were called "Disco Dancer," "Antidis,"
and "Loveletter," and two out of three were later released
on Slip 'n' Slide Blue and Moodmusic Records, to impressive reviews.
The sound of SYSM is a combination of minimal house grooves and emotional,
high fidelity electronic soundscapes. It's easy to recognize a Star
You track - fat retro disco drums beating on top of the most crisp
and wide synth sounds, ever. Their vision of sound is coupled with
the concept that music should always be momentous and not just entertaining
- music should make people cry or laugh and give reasons to survive
through the reality of day-to-day living. Star You Star Me is a return
to the coolest disco sound re-energized for today's clubs, living
rooms, media players and iPods. Includes a guest vocal appearance
by Erlend Øye.

Starving Weirdos
Father Guru
PS, US "In 1998, Starving Weirdos began crafting a body of staggeringly
beautiful, unsettling freeform soundscapes, unbeknownst to all but
a tiny circle of friends and neighbors in their native Humboldt County,
California. The duo's recorded works had not surfaced until very recently,
in the form of extremely limited CD-Rs on such labels as Jyrk and
Root Strata and on the group's own imprint. They have, without exception,
met with resounding critical praise and intense curiosity from the
experimental music community. At the core of Starving Weirdos is the
duo of Brian Pyle and Merrick McKinlay. The pair weave intricate tapestries
of sound from strands of electroacoustic improvisation, ambient noise,
free-folk, and musique concréte. The density of these works
is matched only by their clarity of purpose and execution - each piece
brings into existence a distinct sound-world, rendered with a pointillistic
attention to sonic detail that belies the duo's economy of means.
The result is a profoundly disorienting music that thrives on the
tension between artificiality and organicity, stillness and constant
mutation. Starving Weirdos' music sits uneasily beside that of their
contemporaries in the free-drone/noise/improv underground. While the
group undoubtedly has something in common with such outfits as Sunburned
Hand of the Man or Double Leopards (the two groups with whom they
are most often compared), SW's expansive, understated approach to
improvisation and recording more closely resembles an amalgam of early
AMM, Taj Mahal Travellers, Basil Kirchin, and Pauline Oliveros' deep
listening experiments - as filtered through the crisp night air of
California's redwood forest."

To Rococo Rot
Taken From Vinyl
PS, US Taken From Vinyl is comprised of 12 rare, vinyl-only tracks
taken from To Rococo Rot's out-of-print releases on Fat Cat, Sub Pop,
Domino and City Slang, plus the video for "Telema" directed
by Sebastian Kutscher. Maybe it was just a coincidence that the first
artistic statement from To Rococo Rot in 1995 had been a sound installation,
in which record players were driven by power drills. The dubplates
specially produced for this occasion were played both ways. A short
time later, their first album was released by Kitty-Yo as a picture
disc. Like many others, To Rococo Rot have approved of and used all
kinds of existing sound storage media. As their music is addressed
to everyone everywhere, it requires many different formats to transport
the music to the diverse places and to make it audible there. For
example, in the '90s, they produced tape editions of their albums
for the Eastern European countries. Some of the tracks you will hear
on this CD are taken from 12" EPs, which had been produced for
experimental and ambient-oriented clubs (many of which have since
ceased to exist, and the remaining clubs no longer possess the vibrancy
they had in the '90s). Also, the role of the single as the "herald"
announcing an album has substantially changed. This compilation CD
is an assortment of out-of-print-tracks, which hitherto had been available
only in vinyl format. Mostly, they are exclusive, one-off contributions
to compilations and commissioned by labels such as Fat Cat, Sub Pop,
Domino or City Slang. During the last years, the number of requests
for this material has steadily increased, which led to the decision
to make some of those tracks available again. The majority of the
tracks on this CD have been remastered from vinyl in order to retain
a few traces of the original's sound, where possible. This is a view
of the last eleven years during which To Rococo Rot played together.
It provides the opportunity to re-visit things said a long time ago,
to listen to them in the present and to see, what it is that this
music -- which creates itself within the moment -- rears itself on
today. So please feel free to draw no line between the past and the
future, between the music that has been made and the music that is
to be. All is constantly moving.

Who Will Buy These Wonderful Evils
PS, SWEDEN The Swedes are taking over and are hitting the music scene
all over the world. But this is not really a new story. In Sweden,
as many other countries, the appearance of the Beatles in 1964 brought
a reaction against the stagnant music scene of the past. Literally
thousands of pop groups appeared from nowhere and the music scene
changed forever. Sweden soon became one of the greatest pop hotbeds
of the world and this compilation is the solid proof. On these two
sizzling discs the cream of the 21st century's Swedish pop/rock/psych
wonders are matched with the unquestionable pioneers of the Swedish
60s. Disc one offers a initiated peek at what's happening in the Swedish
rock, pop and psych scene right now. Known and unknown material from
current heroes such as the Soundtrack of Our Lives, Hakan Hellström
(selling platinum in Sweden), Nicolai Dunger, Jose Gonzales, Broder
Daniel, Silverbullit (aka Citizen Bird), International Noise Conspiracy,
Sagor & Swing, and Caesars Palace to hungry up-and-coming debutantes
like Dungen, the Whyte Seeds and Franke, amongst others. On disc two
we take a swirling ride through a time machine and encounter rare
gems from the sinfully swinging Swedish 60s. Amazing fuzz psych head
twister by the Shakers and Pugh. Swinging mod pop anthems by the Wizards,
stellar harmony pop by the Jackpots as well as a groovy sitar psych
nirvana with Charlie and Esdor, plus lots more compiled here for the
first time ever. 2 CDs containing 33 Swedish top tunes housed in a
mind expanding sleeve cram filled with pictures and informative liner
notes.

Magritte, le groupe Surréaliste de Bruxelles, Rupture Volume
2 (1926-1938)
PS, BELGIUM This second volume aural document is devoted to the Brussels
Surrealist Group, 1926, following in the surrealist footsteps that
Dada, Pansaers et Correspondance Volume 1 (1917-1926) established.
On this compilation you can hear rare documents, including the voice
of Magritte explaining why it's impossible to answer the questions
of journalists. As a nucleus started forming in 1924 around Magritte,
Nougé, Lecomte, etc., dissension arose, spawning Correspondance
(1924-26). This release documents the editorial activities of Magritte
and Mesens, the only issue of Sophage (1925), and the obvious influence
of Dada (Schwitters was a contributor). The avant-garde is stateless,
but this release, along with the other two releases in the series,
limit themselves to the geographical space comprised between France,
Germany and The Netherlands, where the main language is French. This
region's experiments and discoveries are missing in French and international
anthologies. This compilation, and the project as a whole, is an urgent
attempt to document an important aspect of surrealism that most surely
would have disappeared into dusty archives, if not released to the
world. Other artists include: Louis Scutenaire, Marcel Mariën,
Paul Colinet, André Souris, Paul Delvaux, Constant Malva, Achille
Chavée and Fernand Dumont.

Volcano The Bear
The Birth of Streissand
PS, UK "Second release from the new Newcastle-based No-Fidelity
label, after the first recording from scene-legend Sir Richard Bishop
(of the Sun City Girls) sold out in a whistle. Something a bit special.
Having built their career upon a reputation for incendiary live appearances
and a heap of self-released CD-Rs and cassettes, Leicester's Volcano
The Bear have slowly been gathering steam, becoming one of this country's
most exciting experimental improv outfits. This startling new 7"
for No-Fi showcases the group at their most abstract, the A-side a
sinister brew of creaking violin and string plucks. It sounds something
like No-Neck Blues Band collaborating with Wolf Eyes on a re-take
of the Saragossa Manuscript soundtrack. The B-side goes further down
the path paved by Olsen and co. with some metallic clanking and utterly
gnarled noise eruptions."
