A Flock of Seagulls
S-T [re-issue]
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The Liverpool quintet A Flock of Seagulls
first gained attention in the dance clubs with "Telecommunication,"
included on this debut release. The band benefited from heavy play
on MTV and quickly became known for their outrageous fashion and lead
singer Mike Score's waterfall-like haircut. However, their self-titled
debut is an enjoyable romp that was set apart from other synth-heavy
acts of the time by Paul Reynolds' unique guitar style. The kinetic
"I Ran (So Far Away)" became a video staple and a Top Ten
radio hit. "A Space Age Love Song," with its synthesizer
washes and echo-laden guitar, also managed to score at radio. The
rest of the album consists of hyperactive melodies, synthesizer noodlings,
and electronic drumming. The lyrics are forgettable. In fact, they
rarely expand on the song titles, but its all great fun and a wonderful
collection of new wave ear candy."

Anderson, Jason
The Hopeful and the Unafraid
PS, US This album takes a stab at capturing some of the energy JASON
ANDERSON loves putting into every show he plays, whether there are
five or fifty people present. For the most part it succeeds, but to
say that these are the "definitive" or "final"
or "best" versions of these songs would be unrealistic,
it would be straight-up false, actually. Jason says he's come to grips
with the fact that it can never be just the way he wants in the studio;
that the passionate, in-the-moment rush of doing these tunes in a
basement full of singing, sweating friends is where his affection
really lies. This is a bittersweet notion, but maybe explains why
someone would spend half a decade on the road, trying to connect with
people anywhere and everywhere, wanting to make them happy, to make
them feel alive.

Balaam & The Angel
Live Free Or Die
PS, UK Staffordshire's Balaam & The Angel were at the forefront
of the 80s Goth movement, playing alongside some of the biggest bands

1988, has been beautifully remastered and repackaged with the direct

Balaam & The Angel were also hugely popular with rock critics.

Beatundercontrol
Cosmic Repackage
PS, UK Since bursting into the world in the late 70s as a punk-driven
bass evangelist, Sweden's Ulf "Rockis" Ivarrson has since
been on a relentless voyage of musical discovery while paying his
dues to pay the rent. Through early 80s bands like The Quiet, playing
the blues with the Eivon Boogie Band, backing up Swedish guitar hero
Clas Yngstrom in his group Sky High or a host of sessions, Ulf nurtured
a growing desire to uncork an inner vision which sounded nothing like
any of these lucratively-popular positions. After a stint with world
music-techno marauders Hedningama, where he pioneered a new instrument
called the bass mandora, Ulf took the plunge in the late '90s and
started Beatundercontrol. Conventional song structures went out the
window as he explored his fixations with the mighty dub, noise and
experimental music that knew no boundaries, emerging with widely acclaimed
first album The Introduction in 2003. 'Instead of writing banal three-minute
songs with mindless expressions and meaning, I rather try to challenge
myself through textures, noises and basslines,' he explains. This
philosophy is explored with often stunning results on Ulf's second
Beatundercontrol album, Cosmic Repackage, a colossal aural menagerie
of space-jazz brass themes and solo flights, subterranean pulses and
darkhued banks of strings which dart between European avant textures
to late 60s hypno-drone alchemists the Third Ear Band. It's a heady
brew, ranging from the nocturnal back alley jazz of "Neighbourterror
Blues" to the intense freeform scattershots and coruscating atmospherics
of "Departure". If dub's shadow looms over the album, notably
on tracks like the bottomless fizz-bombs of Interruption, it steps
out and flashes its glorious sonic stiffie on the alien skank of "Subversion
Dub", albeit lashed with dissonance and howling winds. From punk
rock to the outer limits, Ulf Ivarrson has cause to celebrate quite
a remarkable musical journey and does so with one of the year's most
intoxicatingly uncompromising aural statements.

Bulbs/Wobbly
Div/orce Series # 7
PS, CANADA The seventh installment of our DIV/ORCE series, a split
7" series devoted to transcending the trivial boundaries of genre,
pairs up two Bay Area acts. Wobbly, a San Franciscan with a vigorous
back catalog, including releases on Tigerbeat6, and collaborations
with MATMOS. His track, Tiny Tongue, features guest vocals by Kevy
B (AKA Kevin Blechdom) and, as a first in the series, guest instrumentation
by his 7" partners, BULBS. It's a wiggly road, teeming with wet
noodle guitar waver, elastic drums, and the type of vocal manipulation
that evokes DAT POLITICS references; a beautifully dizzy track. Bulbs,
a two piece of live-processed guitar and drums (although you'd never
guess it), assemble a marvelously composed mélange of harmonious
static. The track lazily transitions from various degrees of dynamics,
eventually locking into a rhythm led by ghost drums. Best listened
to at loud volume. Another delightfully clumsy addition to the DIV/ORCE
SERIES.

Smoke
PS, UK Since impressing far and wide with their Beats for Bars project
Patrick Bird and Martyn Savigar have now expanded their range of collaborators
to weird, wonderful and sometimes audacious effect. In the immediate
vicinity, there's former Specimen and Siouxsie & the Banshees
guitarist Jon Klein, drummer Chris Bell [also Specimen but a bevy
of 80s giants too] and, showing up in the course of this hallucino-genic
journey, Billie Holliday, Catatonia, Marc Bolan and even the young
John Peel, whose unmistakable and always welcome tones talk about
woodland creatures on 'Deaf Aid' amidst another calming space-shuffle
before singer Anna Jacyszyn wafts in. The concept is mash-up taken
to diverse extremes creating slow motion symphonies which plant some
familiar voices in fields of dreams where the mood is deep, dubbed
and drenched in ghosts as Billie Holliday looms in "Trav'lin'
Light" to spine-melting effect, "Soul Clapp" creates
a new hiphop hybrid, "White Space" is an orchestral treatment
of goth-glamsters Specimen and there are tracks like "Deuteronomy"
where the players stretch out after the guests have left. This is
an opiated aural delight from start to finish, by which time you might
be stroking the ceiling like a long-lost friend, satisfied that now
the world's a better place and wondering why they don't make them
like this any more.

Rose/Thorn
PS, US "Long-, long-, long-, loooooong-awaited and singular entry
in the Charalambides and Klang Industries discographies; one of those
'does it really exist?' items that's finally seeing daylight, or moonlight.
A stark, unsettling and beautiful slice of duo Charlambides invocation/incantation,
taken from the period between Jason Bill and Heather Leigh Murray's
tenures with the band and featuring extraordinary chord organ and
vocal work from Christina and some signature lap steel mastery from
Tom. Fans of the band's most recent, more song-based work will find
this relevatory, long-time listeners will say 'ahhhh' and settle in
for the flight. Heavy vinyl, limited pressing, cover handiwork by
Tom, the first release in years from Klang and a sign perhaps of a
truly epic revival." "Long-awaited Klang debut of Charalambides.

heavy fuzz guitar and truly wasted vocals, one of the absolute cornerstones
of Japanese psychedelia. In fact, to many people, this is the ultimate

songs about drugs and girls. Tracks such as 'Requiem of Confusion,'

Drift, The
Memory Drawings
PS, US In the nearly three-year gap between their debut album, "Noumena",
and this follow-up, THE DRIFT have toured extensively throughout North
America and Japan. All that tripping did wonders for their songwriting
process, inspiring efficiency with their structures while maintaining
the intoxicating song lengths they are known for. Though the music
on "Memory Drawings" is familiar, there is a depth to both
the performance and production that feels new all over again. Recorded
directly to analog tape with longtime producer Jay Pellicci at Tiny
Telephones in San Francisco, the mix is used as another instrument
to help shape each song, channeling the mythos of late 60s jazz and
late 70s dub classics. As The Drift have narrowed their focus, they
have expanded their influences. Nowhere is this more obvious than
"Uncanny Valley," with its shades of Afro-beat and disco-soul;
or the dramatic, deserted ballad "Lands End." With "Memory
Drawings", they have truly found their groove - and the deeper
they dig, the more curious we become.

Egg
Self-Titled
PS, UK This now legendary debut album by Egg featured the talents
of Dave Stewart on Keyboards, Mont Campbell on Bass and Clive Brooks
on Drums. Egg were associated with the so-called "Canterbury"
style of rock music pioneered by artists such as Caravan and Soft
Machine. The trio produced music of startling originality and energy,
drawing on influences ranging from rock to jazz to psychedelia to
classical. This fusion resulted in one of the most enduring releases
to appear on Decca's short lived Nova imprint and is now critically
regarded as one of the more unique albums of the early 1970's. Re-mastered
from the original tapes, the Esoteric Recordings reissue includes
three bonus tracks, including both sides of the bands only single
and "Movement 3" from the albums notorious opus "Symphony

Explorers Club, The
Do You Love Me? / Carry Me
PS, US In the age of the MP3, flavors of the "month" circulate
far faster than Baskin Robbins can rotate their cooler. It is refreshing,
then, to hear something timeless every now and again, and the EXPLORERS
CLUB is just that. This is sunny psychedelic pop replete with lush
arrangements and cushy four-part harmonies that harken back to a decade
long ago, when kids turned on their FM radios to find the cool new
thing. These boys are not indie-rockers thieving from the vaults of
the classics - the Explorers Club writes pop songs that sound as authentic
as if they had actually just been unearthed for a new Nuggets collection
or Sundazed reissue. The band draws on the soul-satisfying vocal style
made famous by the Beach Boys and the Association, and pairs it with
arrangements patented by the likes of Phil Spector, the Left Banke
and the Zombies. And like their musical heroes, the Explorers Club
understands the meaning of a great single. With that in mind, we are
pleased to share "Do You Love Me" - the first jewel from
their forthcoming album, "Freedom Wind". "Do You Love
Me" dabbles in Brian Wilson-esque majestic pop, while the exclusive
B-side, "Carry Me" has flourishes of doo-wop and soul amidst
its choral pop.

Fairport Convention
S-T
PS, US Reissue of the 1st Fairport album, originally released by Polydor
in 1968. "The best British folk-rock band of the late '60s, Fairport
Convention did more than any other act to develop a truly British
variation on the folk-rock prototype by drawing upon traditional material
and styles indigenous to the British Isles. While the revved-up renditions
of traditional British folk tunes drew the most critical attention,
the group members were also (at least at the outset) talented songwriters
as well as interpreters. Released in 1968, FC's debut album owes more
to The Byrds than to Pentangle, with soaring harmonies and psychedelic
guitars. Recorded pre-Sandy Denny, Judy Dyble sang like a siren and
then left to form Trader Horne."

For Against
Shade Side Sunny Side
PS, US Signposts: Factory Records, Joy Division, Section 25, Interpol,
My Bloody Valentine. WORDS ON MUSIC is proud to release "Shade
Side Sunny Side," FOR AGAINST's seventh full-length record and
first studio album since 2002. As the Lincoln, Nebraska trio approaches
their 25th anniversary on the independent music scene, FOR AGAINST
has reemerged with an exclamation point: "Shade Side Sunny Side"
is a landmark record for the band, boasting FOR AGAINST's darkest
(and loudest) material to date. The post-punk roots of FOR AGAINST's
early years are firmly in place, but presented throughout 9 new songs
with a more expansive and atmospheric sonic palette. "Shade Side
Sunny Side" also marks the notable return of original FOR AGAINST
guitarist Harry Dingman III, who formed the band with vocalist and
bassist Jeffrey Runnings back in 1984. Dingman left FOR AGAINST after
1988's seminal dream pop record, "December." For the new
album, the prolific Runnings-Dingman songwriting team picks up right
where they left off 20 years ago, when they wrote the classic post-punk
material that comprised "Echelons," "December,"
and "In The Marshes" all within a 2- year span. "Glamour,"
the album's opening track, is a fierce proposition that tours the
early FACTORY RECORDS sound before segueing into a cold post-punk
stomp coated by Runnings' icy vocals. Songs like "Underestimate"
and the album closer "Irresistible" sparkle with a pop grandeur
hinted at by 2002's "Coalesced" album, but infused with
unmistakable guitarwork revealing the fingerprints of Dingman's return:
searing feedback, atmospheric chord-play, and inspired hooks are coaxed
together to form a musical backbone that is both furious and gorgeous.
"Aftertaste" is a blistering song that melds the musical
sensibilities of JOY DIVISION's early WARSAW years with production
by MARC OSTERMEIER (SHOULD) hinting at WIRE's "154." "Shade
Side Sunny Side" also includes a cover version of "Friendly
Fires," written by Factory Records' SECTION 25, from their 1981
debut "Always Now." "Shade Side Sunny Side" also
includes some of the most heartrending accounts by Runnings to date.
The album reveals itself as a confessional and therapeutic musical
diary, with several songs recounting the tragic life and loss of a
close family member, from the acerbic "Glamour," to the
haunting ballad "Why Are You So Angry?," and culminating
in "Game Over," where Runnings is at his most defenseless,
singing nakedly on piano through the first verse and chorus. FOR AGAINST's
musicianship on "Shade Side Sunny Side" is in top form,
reflecting a maturity befitting their quarter century of songwriting
and performances and a freshness that has drawn together an interesting
union of dream pop enthusiasts in the USA and a strong dark wave following
in Europe.

Fred
Live at the Bitter End
PS, GERMANY Who or what on God's earth is Fred? In Swedish, Fred means
'peace', a good idea for any decade. In music, Fred is an upstart
band of pseudo-bumpkins (aka hippies) from the hills of central PA
(really just kids from mid-Atlantic suburbia lost in the purple haze)
who took Greenwich Village by storm in 1974. Recorded over the summer
of 1974 while Fred was headlining at NYC's world famous nightspot
The Bitter End, these are raw, in your face live performances that
will lift you up and blow you away. It is high octane, aggressive
electric instrumental music with a pulse pounding beat, wailing gutsy
guitar, and wild violin pyrotechnics. Live at the Bitter End features
all new original music, ranging from tender to tortured, demented
to delirious, always energetic, edgy, enigmatic, and full of surprises.
With strong melodic themes over innovative rhythms, six pieces of
the puzzle are carefully arranged into a seemingly endless variety
of combinations, and then each is set loose over elegant structures
for solo flights in the twilight zone of improvisation. Influenced
by Mahavishnu, Zappa, Jethro Tull, Yes, Spirit, King Crimson, Bartok,
and Stravinsky, as well as inspired by musicians like Jean-Luc Ponty,
Jerry Garcia, Bill Bruford, Herbie Hancock, John Bonham, Jerry Goodman,
Robin Trower, Joe Zawinul, Chris Squire, and Stephane Grappelli, Fred
had by 1974 assimilated and fused a staggering array of disparate
elements into their sound.

Hinterland
Pan Pan Medico
PS, CANADA FILE UNDER: moody, new wave-flavoured dreampop. FOR FANS
OF: Cocteau Twins, the Cure, Ladytron, Sigur Ros, Mew. Pan Pan Medico,
the third album by Vancouver's Hinterland, is a study in contrasts.
From the new wave-flavoured synth-rock propulsion of "Detwiller
Pavilion" and "Somatoform" to the haunting ambiance
of "Future Ghost" and the jangly dreampop of "You Speak
< I'm Silent", the album is anything but predictable. What
holds the whole thing together is the confidence with which the band
swings from distortion-saturated rock to ethereal layers of electronic
sound. Working again with Caleb Stull (who also produced 2006s The
Picture Plane), Hinterland explores both darkness and light on Pan
Pan Medico. The album takes its title from a nautical distress call,
and the lyrics of singer Michaela Galloway more often than not express
a strong desire to escape - from obsessive thoughts, from earthly
bonds, and from deep-seated resentments. The band bolsters these themes
with a signature sound that critics have described as "epic"
(Vancouver Courier), "intelligent, thoughtful indie rock"
(Columbia Journal), and "nearly flawless" (See Magazine).

Hornet Leg
Blood Trilogy
PS, US HORNET LEG, the new Northwest fuzz harbingers in tune with
the "heavy", identify the primal symbolisms of blood as
fear, death and paradoxically, life. The "Blood Trilogy",
condenses the full length concept album into three potent tracks of
pure unsentimental, raw energy. Expertly engineered by CALVIN JOHNSON
at the Dub Narcotic Studios, these recordings are an immediate grab
to the throat but leave a haunting grip to the ears. Chapter 1: "Bleed
The Blood", a groovy mid tempo churn, represents the immediate
loss of spirit that occurs when love is lost and never regained. To
bleed the spirit is to bleed the blood and thus the spirit is bled.
Chapter 2: "Covered In Blood", has the pounding scream and
scrape when one is exposed to the blunt force of brutality. Anger
and fear become intertwined and fused into the "bad" parts
of the subconscious and the ensuing detriment can make vibrations
that sound very similar to the distorted electric guitar. Chapter
3: "Bloody Hands", is a requiem for the (un)dearly departed
sung in the style of a ghostly lullaby. A melodic question is posed
- Is consciousness tethered to the physicality of blood? The arterial
guitar and voice of Chris Sutton (Dub Narcotic, C.O.C.O) is the jugular
vein carrying the sound of this group's unique garage punk. The heart
pumping rhythm is the bash and thrash of one Claudia Meza (Japanther,
Thunder Thunder Thunder). Joel Brazzel (K Records darling), a full-fledged
ghost member, contributes shaker and tambourine work in the session
that produces just the right amount of evil.

Incredible Vickers Brothers, The

PS, US Hailing from the wooded coastal community of Felton, California,
The Incredible Vickers Brothers have crafted a kind of music as familiar
as the seasons and as unpredictable as the weather. Having honed their
skills in apprenticeships with legendary California bands Cerebral

time was right to strike out on their own. Setting up camp with producer

Vickers Brothers want nothing less than to take their place among
the great brother acts of history! Influenced by the zany surrealism
of the brothers Marx plus the yin-yang/love-hate relationships of
Phil & Don Everly and Ray & Dave Davies, the Vickers Bros.
aim to mix a myriad of ingredients, musical and otherwise, into the
forever boiling pot of rock music. * "Gallimaufry" hash,
stew [15-th Century French] 1. a mixed-up jumble / 2. a ridiculous
medley / 3. a promiscuous assemblage.

Karmic Society
Journey
PS, GERMANY The quartet was founded in 2005, in Heidelberg (Germany)
and plays with a great level of proficiency and on authentic equipment
to get their analog 70's sound. Mostly instrumental jams, the Karmic
Society reflects the traditional Krautrock jam-spirit of Kraan, Message,
Epitaph, combined with US west coast influences, but also progressive
fusion rock elements like Mahavishnu's McLaughlin, Chick Corea or
Keith Emerson. Besides a unique rhythm section, you can look forward
to beautiful melodies and varying compositions fitting perfectly to
a festival sunny afternoon. A massive, swirling Hammond organ by Winnie
Rimbach-Sator (also plays keys with Treacle People) is in communication
with excessive Stratocaster guitar solos melting into unexpected orgies
of sounds. This album contains 4 originals and 4 improvised covers
tunes which are 'Dark Star' (Grateful Dead), 'Witches Moon' (Quicksilver
Messenger Service), a heavy 'Spacepatrol Orion' version (authorized
by Peter Thomas -- sci-fi sound from the mid-60s) and 'Yoo Doo Right'
(Can) as a 17 min. version with stunning moog space parts and tribal
voodoo percussions. The production sounds natural and grew from a
free concept to a strong compact album of 65 mins intense music. (btw:
3/4 of the band support the US group Dragonwyck at live shows). The
CD contains nice artwork and an 8 p. booklet. Highly recommended to
sophisticated rock/fusion/jam listeners who like intense organ vs.
guitar battles and to those who like to enjoy well produced experimental
sounds to test their audiophile stereo equipment.

Leyers, Dirk
Alma
PS, GERMANY Dirk Leyers presents his first record for Klang Elektronik.
"Azul" is an impulsive track, with an anxious, meandering
bass line and bright synthesizer sounds, while the beat unerringly
gallops directly towards dancer's heaven. On the B-side, Dirk calms
down a little bit and begrudges us with a conveniently laid-back,
almost ambient piece of music called "Azur" before he relieves
us with the spheric, whispering "Alma."

The Outside
PS, US ELIOT LIPP continues his impressive retooling of analog infused
electro-funk with his latest full-length, "The Outside",
his first for MUSH RECORDS. Techno and hip-hop in their earliest,
formative stages have inspired Eliot throughout his career, and form
the common thread running through the album. Slick analogue synth
work and tight drum programming abound, as Eliot deconstructs his
influences to create something that is both recognizable and completely
futuristic. For listeners who remember a time when electronic music
had a little dirt under its fingernails, "The Outside" will
truly capture your imagination.

utilize a variety of more traditional instruments (accordion, Moog,
xylophone) along with such noisemakers as soup pots, shoes, squeaky

coast to coast and with a kinetic stage presence, Man Man are a musical
contagion waiting to happen. They've toured with Cat Power, Arcade

Park Avenue Music
By Hearts + Horses
PS, US Sacramento couple Wes Steed and Jeannette "Juju"
Faith got a shiny new piano - really shiny. So up went the mics and
out came the music. Flowing pieces of raw improvisation from Juju
were recorded and then dressed, bit by bit, by Wes in layers of modular
synth distortion; some for the fun of making soundtracks for short
films by New Zealand artist and web designer Fuyuko Akiyoshi; some
for the fun of mixing 10 minutes of piano music down to 3; or making
3 minute songs out of 4 measures of sometimes bluesy, sometimes ethereal
use of the 88s. When one mic picked up off-the-cuff vocals for several
tracks, another picked up the team's beloved cat Harrison's collar
bell ringing in the background for what seems the sweetest topping
to the already honeyed instrumental "Norway Kitty", the
opening track on what has become park avenue music's loveliest accomplishment
yet. Befriending cellist Gretchen Lehtonen in time to add her touch
to that first track (even if recorded backwards) was a lucky move.
The trio has played a handful of boutique performances, each one unique
and special as they improvised in the dark while streams of Akiyoshi's
imagery served as backdrop. They have also brought a crowded house
of listeners to silence - even when equipment failed, piano and cello
went on to duet without the noise of synthesizers, drum machines,
and Unix-based applications. "by hearts + horses" may seem
an odd title, but given that the band has morphed over the years and
is indeed changing their name to "hearts + horses", this
last effort as park avenue music seemed only fit to be thusly titled.
(File under Park Avenue music and/or Hearts + Horses.) "While
many artists are using a Moog, Roland, or Juno for bouncy pop, Park
Avenue Music approaches the unique instruments as if they were gentle
as flowers. It could be Jeannette Faith's concert pianist training
or simply a love for exquisite sounds. Either way, To Take With You
is an alluring ensemble of downtempo and quiet, sophisticated pop."
-Kenyon Hopkin, All Music Guide "Mixing very nice programming
of lush electronics with soft, breathy female vocals, it manages to
sound somewhat like several different things...without really sounding
too much like anyone." - Almost Cool "I'm starting to think
that this sort of electronic pop is the new shoegaze for me-no matter
how many times I hear these wispy, glitchy sounds, I never seem to
get tired of them. And that's especially true when a band like Park
Avenue Music does it this well." - Opus Zine

Portico
Progeny Blues
PS, CANADA Progeny Blues was recorded in the fall of 2006 at Vancouver's
Mushroom Studios and co-produced with Shawn Penner and Aaron Nordean
(Hot Hot Heat) and mastered by Alan Douches (Sufjan Stevens, Mastadon,
Ben Folds Five) of WestWestSide Music NYC. "Portico are simply
one of the best Canadian bands working today. Even if lead singer
Lyn Heinemann wasn't a husky sweet powerhouse vocalist, the rest of
the band have mastered the art of mixing delicate musical phrasing
with mid-tempo urgency. Whether they function as a standard four-piece
or flesh out the material with epic gang vocals, or a surprisingly
effective horn section, there isn't one note out of place on Progeny
Blues." FFWD "This release is a rock solid recording of
a band that just has it. The songs are big and modest at the same
time, and the vocals and lyrics are engaging and mysterious. This
album has everything I love about top shelf independent music."
Zunior's Top Picks 2007 "This is a confident-sounding sophomore
release that is quite the thing of beauty when it connects. Although
there is energy, it crackles just under the surface, only making overt
appearances on some occasions. The band are going for atmosphere and
they succeed quite nicely, as this album has a great consistent feel
that makes it one of those listens that actually gets better if experienced
as an album. Something great is indeed brewing." -!Exclaim "In
a week with a plethora of record releases, Vancouver-based pop band
Portico will have a tough time getting noticed. And that will be a
shame, since the group's second full-length is definitely worth a
trip to the record store. Standouts include All You Daughters and
the relatively upbeat Stand Down, but all the songs, despite being
mostly dark and serious, definitely deserve your attention."
NOW Toronto (NNNN Critic's Pick) "This Vancouver band's sophomore
album boasts some of the most understated, husky and unique female
vocals I've heard-add to that some captivating melodies and just enough
lyrical feistiness to lend some edge (take the previously featured
scorcher, "Sincerely," for instance), and you've got the
recipe for an enticing and highly recommendable album." Wolves,
Hawks, and Kites' Top Unsung Albums of 2007 From winters of horribly
cold snow and small-town grumpy relatives to boarded up downtowns
and decaying infrastructure, Portico's sound and lyrics are a living
soundtrack. The combination of Greg Murray (drums), Mimi Mahovlich
(bass), Trent Hopton (guitar and keys) and Lyn Heinemann (guitar and
vocals) creates "a blend of spectral melodies, tricky time signatures,
and expertly intertwined guitar lines which is entirely it's own"(The
Georgia Straight).

Secret Shine
All Of The Stars
PS, US "All of the Stars" is Secret Shine's second studio
album, and their first in 14 years. The band took an unscheduled nine
year break before returning in 2004 with the release of their back
catalogue (After Years) on Clairecords, followed by two emphatically-received
EPs of new material in 2006, and live shows in Europe and America.
"All of the Stars" encapsulate the passion of Secret Shine's
live power pop in the heart-thumping 'Oblivion', 'Voice of the Sea'
and 'The Sound of Light' but is both delicate and beautiful in 'All
that's left' and 'Last Leaves'. Secret Shine has lost none of the
sumptuous boy/girl harmonies and celestial melodies (never more evident
than in the heavenly 'Stars in the Sky') that made their debut album
Untouched such a classic that is still revered in shoegazing circles
today. Secret Shine dedicated 2007 to write and record All of the
Stars and demo'd twice the amount of songs they needed for the album
so that only the finest would survive. The band have grown on this
record - the sound is stronger and more confident, expertly produced
and directed by Shine protagonist Jamie Gingell. The band drift effortlessly
between the epic, orchestral arrangements of 'Café Crash' and
the sparse, haunting piano-led 'Another Day'. All of the Stars would
sit comfortably alongside shoegaze classics like Slowdive's Souvlaki,
My Bloody Valentine's Loveless and The Pale Saints' The Comforts of
Madness, but Secret Shine have created their own unique treasure and
possibly the new wave of 'stargaze'.

Swift, Richard
Richard Swift as Onasis
PS, US The double-EP "Richard Swift as Onasis" is as creatively
fortifying as it is unhinged and unpolished, a primal slab thrown
into the fire for dancing and merriment during the chilly months while
we await RICHARD SWIFT'S second full-length. Once upon a time, the
idea of a record was to capture a performance, to grab the those undulating
wavelengths from the air and stick them to this thing that went round
and round, so later on that performance could be heard and felt and
experienced again. Before the beloved studio trickery of our beloved
Beatles or Beach Boys, cats gathered around a couple microphones,
plugged into that thing that went round and round, and let at it.
So it's no surprise Swift, a long-in-the-tooth impresario of all not-a-computer,
would jangle and stomp out this tangent of jams that tape-echo a generation
of pioneers who believed Rock and Roll and the Blues a celestial calling
and not a lifestyle choice. Now most listeners won't think about how
Swift did this on a cheap four-track; they won't immediately see his
nods to Link Wray and Howlin' Wolf; it doesn't matter. The songs stand
up. The songs get in your belly and wiggle your hips and stomp your
foot and bob your head. They got vibe and atmosphere. They act like
great harmony, making whatever they're accompanying richer and wider
and thicker.

Tears Run Rings
Always, Sometimes, Seldom, Never
PS, US When members of Tears Run Rings didn't play well with a big-shot
producer, they threw away the old material and set off to create an
album on their own. There was only one dilemma: they were now living
in three different cities. This Portland and Seattle by way of L.A.
collaboration was accomplished in the style of the Postal Service;
occasional weekends together produced the frameworks for songs that
took shape as they swapped tracks using CDRs and the good 'ole internet.
Three years and one self-released EP later, Tears Run Rings presents
its debut full length, Always, Sometimes, Seldom, Never. Tears Run
Rings features ex-members of The Autocollants, Laura Watling, and
both of the masterminds behind Shelflife Records. These pop veterans
have abandoned their twee roots and traded it for dense, wall-of-sound
arrangements and aggressive distorted guitars -- but that's not to
say they have forgotten their pop sensibilities. TRR distances themselves
from 90's shoegazers with upfront vocals and catchy singlenote guitar
riffs. Their creation is melodically rich, brimming with layers of
boy-girl vocals inspired by the harmonies of 60s groups such as The
Lennon Sisters and The Caravelles. One of the album strengths is its
flow through a range of different tempos. It begins with a lulling,
almost hypnotic "Happiness (part one)", explodes with the
hard-driving kick of "How Will the Others Survive," then
regresses into the atmospheric and melancholy "Beautiful Stranger."
TRR demonstrates their affection for Moose's "Live a Little,
Love a Lot" by splicing tracks together with ambient noise: church
bells ring out of the end of "Mind the Wires" introducing
the danceable "Run Run Run"; a cappella voices and the tap
of an organ unite "The Weight of Love" and "World Upside
Down." Still, the most powerful element of Always, Sometimes,
Seldom, Never is the deep, heartfelt (and occasionally heartbreaking)
conviction heard here. But maybe this comes natural for band members
who spend most of their time wishing they could just be together.

#132 (May 2008) [Magazine + CD]
PS, UK Editor's Letter: What I most wanted to talk to Robert Plant
about when I met him last August was Raising Sand, the album of what
he called "dark, sexy Americana" he'd recorded in Nashville
with bluegrass singer Alison Krauss and producer T Bone Burnett. That
album was unlike anything Plant had done previously and seemed to
me the best thing he'd put his name to in the long years since the
demise of Led Zeppelin. Of course, by the time we meet again in Birmingham
five days later to talk in more detail about the album, there's something
else looming. Plant, not wanting to be misleading or evasive, eventually
confirms in confidence that, yes, Led Zeppelin would be reforming,
for one show, at London's O2 Arena. The eventual official announcement
provokes an incredible reaction, an absolute frenzy for tickets. The
gig itself - delayed once, by an injury to Jimmy Page - turns out
to be by general consent a triumph. Surely, it was argued, the taste
they'd had of being Zeppelin again would prove irresistible to everyone
involved, including Plant, whatever his commitments to a tour with
Krauss and T Bone. Ever since, the speculation about what they might
do next has continued, as they say, unabated. Will they tour? Make
a new album? What had it been like for them, back together at the
O2, and what would it take for them to do it again? In this month's
exclusive Uncut cover story, you can find out what Plant, Jimmy Page
and John Paul Jones have to say about the reunion, each other, what
it was like to be Led Zeppelin again and where they go from here.
It starts on page 36.

Winston Tong
In A Manner of Speaking (Best Of)
PS, UK LTM are pleased to present In A Manner Of Speaking (Best Of),
a collection of outstanding tracks by Winston Tong, the songwriter
and performance artist best known as front man of the group Tuxedomoon.
Recorded between 1982 and 1990, the twelve tracks gathered on In A
Manner of Speaking include five tracks from Winston's acclaimed 1985
solo album Theoretically Chinese, produced by former Associate Alan
Rankine and featuring a stellar cast of guest musicians including
Jah Wobble, Steven Morris, Simon Topping and Dave Formula. Two are
in the form of dance remixes previously only available on an Italian
maxi single. This Best Of CD also features representative tracks from
Winston's other two solo albums Like The Others and Miserere, as well
as rare compilation tracks: covers of Duke Ellington's Prelude to
a Kiss, witty festive ditty The Twelve Days of Christmas, and Syd
Barrett's Late Night. Also included are two especially memorable Tong
songs recorded with Tuxedomoon, Albert Camus tribute The Stranger
and In A Manner of Speaking, the 1985 song later covered by Martin
Gore of Depeche Mode and more recently by Nouvelle Vague. As a result
of the Nouvelle Vague cover version, IAMOS has now become a standard,
featuring in the soundtracks of several high profile movies and television
shows, including A Mighty Heart, Sugar Rush, Fragile and Riviera.
The booklet features a detailed biography of Winston Tong, as well
as archive images. Winston Tong is alive and well and living in San
Francisco, where he continues to perform in live and theatre events.

casket of scorched earth sounds, the remains of the cracks at the

Yard
Detrit
PS, US After dropping some serious science on European labels, Yard
turns stateside to Binary Dilemma with a 12" of transcendent
organic techno. Detroit grinds and resonates with 909, breaks and
aquatic washes of sound bringing to mind gritty Detroit streets. As
the beats pound, cascading melodies flood the field and take this
to Neo-Detroit next level shit. Squeekr is an aquatic sexy grind of
groovy techno reminiscent of an urgent meeting between Pan Sonic &
Mark Pritchard while a monster bass line drives hallucinogenic synths,
as if they've been dubbing around the dancefloor by Lee Scratch himself.
On the flip we're treated to a deep acid remix of Detrit by the legendary
Dutch brothers of Funckarma aka CANE. Dropping the ones and zeros
as they've never been spun before, sending 303 sequences ricocheting
against the chopped beats of the original. Anders Ilar's remix finishes
the 12" out with a lush rendition of Detrit that croons and swoons
in all the right places. LUSH.

(Well You Know) Stuff Is Like We Yeah! [regular version] (ON SALE
/ PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 22ND)
PS, FINLAND New 2008 album from Finnish psych-pop phenoms! The fab
three, back with guitar-based spaced-out bohemian blues-rock and proto-garage-psychedelia,
produced by Kramer (Galaxie 500, Daniel Johnston, Ween, Bongwater).
Recorded in just 10 days at the band's own Altai studios 22-Pistepirkko
step forward with their idea of impressive simplicity, lively trio-playing
and good melodies. After periods of heavy experiments in electronic
production work, their current concept of keeping things simple was
already their approach for the Drops+Kicks (2005) album sessions.
Now, with the new album one can hear it in full bloom. P-K Keränen's
vocals and guitar playing have gathered depth that one doesn't hear
too often. Additionally, drummer Espe Haverinen simplified his playing
to a great effect and sings more touching songs then on any other
album. Asko Keränen's sonic bass, weird organs and effects add
a room with a view, so specific 22pp and just right for producer Kramer
to play with those bits and pieces in a most gentle and subtle way.
Chris Bailey of The Saints heard it and wrote: "From the first
bars of the opening track you know you are in for a treat, this record
is MAGIC. Each song has its own personality and reference point which
should defy inclusion on the same album yet all combine to create
an astonishing journey through all that is glorious about pop music.
...a stupendous piece of work!"

cages of plunging rhythms and blurting stabs, and when the keys afford
them some space, the whole feels crisply open. However, just as often

Arc Lab
The Goodbye Radio (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 22ND)
PS, US Medard Fischer returns with his rather cryptically-titled third
album, "The Goodbye Radio". Representing a large step forward
for Fischer's Arc Lab project, the album is structured as a musical
reinterpretation of the sonnet form in which field recordings, organic
instrumentation, radio noise, candid male vocals and snippets of old
public domain recordings meet with the FM synthesis, female vocals
and signature beatwork that made previous Arc Lab efforts so special.
Thematic reference points include the Russian space program, relativity,
female serial killers, and being separated from a soulmate. This diverse
collection of influences gives the album a more personal feel than
previous efforts as there are now human stories attached to Fischer's
Arc Lab scheme. Genre specific sign-posts or "this-meets-that"
descriptors are really of little use in describing "The Goodbye
Radio" as Fischer has now taken Arc Lab to places where the synthetic
only aid him in the preservation of great music and ideas. But, as
the title may allude to, this may be Fischer's final offering. Let's
hope not. An artist capable of such alchemy would be a significant
loss for all of us. Let's hope the Arc Lab radio stays on and at its
full volume.

On Ne Distinguait Plus Les Tetes (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 29TH)
PS, FRANCE Arca is a French project initiated by Joan Cambon and Sylvain
Chauveau at the beginning of the year 2000. Arca is inspired by music,
cinema, literature, photographs, every day life sounds. Arca uses
"warm" electronic sounds, mixed with organic instruments,
rainy guitars and Sylvain's voice (since the third album) to draw
melancholic landscapes not so far from David Sylvian masterpieces.
Most of the songs are recorded and mixed at home by Joan Cambon. Sylvain
Chauveau made five solo albums: instrumental music based on sweet
harmonies of piano and strings. The latest one is "Down to the
bone", a record of Depeche Mode covers. He was also part of the
former projects Micro:mega and Watermelon Club.

Autumns, The
Fake Noise from a Box of Toys (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 15TH)
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Previous albums like In the Russet Gold
of This Vain Hour were full of shimmering, slowly unfolding dream
pop soundscapes directly influenced by the likes of My Bloody Valentine
and the Cocteau Twins, whose Simon Raymonde signed the Los Angeles
band to his Bella Union label some time back. There are intermittent
flashes of that sound on Fake Noise from a Box of Toys (notably on
"The Midnight Knock" and "The Beautiful Boot"),
but this is a far more immediate album overall. Points of comparison
this time aren't the wall-of-effects-pedals wash that Robin Guthrie
or Kevin Shields specialized in, but the self-consciously epic likes
of Simple Minds, U2, Radiohead, or even Coldplay: singer Matthew Kelly
tends to favor the highest end of his range à la Chris Martin
or Thom Yorke. Anthemic singalong choruses, catchy guitar riffs, and
layered harmonies -- things the Autumns never had much truck with
on their earlier albums -- are the focus of songs like "Boys,"
"Glass Jaw," and "Clem," any of which could conceivably
be mainstream alt-rock radio hits. That may sound like the Autumns
have abandoned themselves to the wider pop marketplace, but what's
most impressive about Fake Noise from a Box of Toys is that the group
maintains enough of their own musical personality on songs like the
swirling closer "Oh My Heart" and the dramatic high point
"Killer in Drag" that the more accessible songs sound like
evolution, not sellout."

Bailiff, Jessica & Annelies Monsere
Untitled EP (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 15TH)
PS, BELGIUM Numbered limited edition of 310 in an LP like sleeve.
Annelies Monseré (Belgium/Bluesanct records) and Jessica Bailiff
(US/Kranky) met back in 2002, during Jessica's first European tour.
They've been frequently doing shows together since 2005. They've often
joined each other on stage, but recording together didn't happen until
they did a duo-tour in October 2007. On this occasion, they've totally
reworked two rare tracks of Jessica, and two yet unreleased songs
by Annelies. Although it's just the two of them, this ep has a very
built-up sound, which is reminiscent of Jessica's earliest output
and Annelies' most recent live shows. Vocals, guitars and cello- and
keyboard drones get a very prominent role on these recordings, which
were made entirely in the analog domain. The ep is limited to 310,
and comes in a mini-lp jacket. All copies are hand-numbered and have
hand-written liner notes by Annelies.

Calypso Shakedown (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 15TH)
PS, US Not the Bus Stop Label's pop-obsessed artist, but a Chicago
18-piece boasting avant-rock pedigress harnessing their collective
powers for this breezy soul-funk de force. Although Calypso Shakedown
is in some respects a throwback to a lost era - an era characterized
by saccharine enforcement of smooth passion - one is impressed more
deeply on each listen by an irresistibly genuine quality, unmistakably
contemporary. Think Elliott Smith meets Lionel Richie, it's a little
bit like peanut butter and bananas. Now pour on some honey. There
is uncommon depth within these songs. Say whatever else you will about
it, but unfettered by convention and without affectation, there is
no denying Calypso Shakedown has loads of soul. Trombones flirt with
flutes atop the warm sonic glow of a Fender Rhodes, guitars mingle
with vibraphone and violin and cello soar over elaborate vocals. Throughout,
an uncommonly adept rhythm section (think rhythm and blues) forms
the backbone that speaks volumes and could move mountains.

Chandeliers
The Thrush (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 15TH)
PS, UK Chandeliers are a Chicago_based quartet that represents a phenomenon
of unclassifiable modern music. Comprised of multi-instrumentalists
from Chicago's blossoming young avant-rock scene, they have created
a unique, and live, electronic sound. Adopting the collective spirit
of krautrock bands like Can and Faust, the Chandeliers function as
a unified whole, with no dominant members. This approach gives the
band a more intuitive and unpredictable approach to composing. the
sessions for The Thrush were overseen by Bablicon's Diminisher and
Blue Hawaii at the Shape Shoppe and at Mahjongg's west-side studio
in Chicago. Its nine songs feature guests musicians from Bablicon,
Icy Demons, and Mahjongg and includes 3 videos by filmmaker TJ Hellmuth.
Believing that colour can exist in harmony with timbre, the Chandeliers
pride themselves on their synaesthetic live performances: a non-stop
high-energy show, augmented with dual projections of Brakhage-esqe
visual rhythm. Chandeliers bring the energy of a super-live party
to their cerebral synth interplay. An obvious reference is Kraftwerk,
but with influences ranging from Burmese and Arabic melody, to the
sonically dirty rhythmic propulsion of Konono no.1, and the crunked-out
psychedelic hip-hop of J-Dilla, Chandeliers always keep the listener
on their toes. An album with the flow of a mix-tape, the Thrush is
at home bangin' in your trunk or hypnotizing on your headphones.

garage-punk racket. The title cut and "Contaminated" are
definitely 'Teenage Hate'-esque. B-Side has an Oblivians cover &
a slower-style Fatals-ish long-titled bloozer. Recording is pretty
rough. Scums stats: 600 copies on baby- blue swirled vinyl.

PS, US The Red Hand Mark closely mirrors the Crow Tongue live sound.
The bones of this sound are guimbri-banjo (a bass banjo based on a
Morroccan lute), hand-drums & vocals. Their live sound has been
called everything from "a more tribal Neurosis" to "Appalachian
Doom." Crow Tongue worships the groove, plowing out raw and primitive,
dark tribal earth & spirit songs. Featuring members of Stone Breath.

Cud
Showbiz (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 13TH)
PS, UK Having departed the independent world and signed with A&M
in 1991, CUD proceeded to pursue the commercial success their previous
releases had hinted at with 1992's Asquarius. Following this, their
first hit album, proved to be the band s longest break between releases
(largely the result of some inter-label disharmony), but they eventually
emerged in 1994 with Showbiz. Recorded primarily in Scotland (at a
studio owned by Fish of Marillion fame, no less), this record saw
their sound mature and showcased a broader range of songwriting styles
than previous efforts. It was well received on its release in April
1994, garnering favorable reviews, and spawned two UK hit singles
in Neurotica and One Giant Love. Sadly, though, the album proved to
be the band's last officially released effort as the pressures of
life on a major and all that it entails took their toll on the band.
This remastered version also includes a number of B-Sides from the
album's single releases, as well as some unreleased out-takes and
demo versions, including material
intended for their next album, which hasn't seen the light of day
before now. This release (along with two more Cherry Red CUD Reissues)
comes hot on the tails of 2006's Rich and Strange The Anthology compilation
and 2007's well received re-issues of two more of the band's albums,
all of which reminded the world just how great this band were. A UK
tour is also scheduled for March to promote this and it's accompanying
releases. TRACKS: 1. SOMEBODY SNATCHED MY ACTION 2. ESP 3. WAVING

Leggy Mambo (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 13TH)
PS, UK Following the release of their debut When In Rome, Kill Me
and 1990 s Elvis Belt compilation (CDMRED355), Leeds indie heroes
CUD set to work on their next album for Imaginary Records. Recorded
during the Summer of 1990, Leggy Mambo proved to be a step in all
the right directions, cementing the sound developed over their previous
releases and capitalizing on the band s pop sensibilities to provide
their most immediately accessible collection of songs to date. Produced
by XTCs Dave Gregory and released in October 1990, the album spawned
the well-received singles Robinson Crusoe and Magic (both of which
might have achieved greater success had they been released on a larger
label) and generated a huge amount of industry interest, eventually
leading to their signing with A & M the following year. This Cherry
Red Gold top Copy version of the album features the newly remastered
original disc, as well as a collection of demos and alternate versions,
all of which have been hand picked by the band themselves. This release
(along with two more Cherry Red CUD Reissues) comes hot on the tails
of 2006 s Rich and Strange The Anthology compilation and 2007's well
received reissues of two more of the band's albums, all of which reminded

resurgence in interest. A UK tour is scheduled for March to promote

Elvis Belt (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 13TH)
PS, UK Formed in Leeds in 1986, CUD went on to forge one of the more
interesting and indefinable sounds of the late 80s / early 90s indie
scene. Fusing a catchy pop sensibility with danceable grooves and
intelligent and often humorous lyrics, they soon became firm independent
favorites and began releasing records on Leeds based Reception Records
in 1987, very quickly catching the ear of John Peel and becoming a
regular fixture of his broadcasts. Three quality singles into their
career, the band secured a deal with Imaginary Records, where they
continued a fine run of singles and eventually released their debut
album. Capitalizing on the band's underground success, in June 1990
Imaginary followed this with this fantastic compilation of their early
releases, topping several independent charts in the process and further
establishing an already strong reputation. Some eighteen years later,
Elvis Belt is updated and reissued here by Cherry Red, together with
a wealth of rarities and unreleased tracks from those formative years
and beyond. This release features the original album in its entirety,
carefully remastered and now sitting comfortably alongside Elvis Handbag,
an additional disc conceived by the band as a sister album to the
original release and containing a number of further B-Sides, Peel
Session recordings and cover versions (including the band's legendary
take on Bohemian Rhapsody, previously only available on the ultra-rare
Alvin Lives in Leeds compilation). This release (along with two more
Cherry Red CUD Reissues) comes hot on the tails of 2006's Rich and
Strange The Anthology compilation and 2007s well received re-issues
of two more of the band's albums, all of which reminded the world

Drowned in A Sea of Sound (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 13TH)
PS, US A year in the making, The Daysleepers return with their full
length Clairecords Debut! "Drowned in a Sea of Sound" takes
nothing but the best elements of the band's highly acclaimed EP's
and blends them with some entirely new experimental soundscapes. The
Daysleepers trademark sound of mixing Dreampop, Post-Punk and New
Wave styles is still very much present, and at times pushes even beyond
those boundaries. Imagine the sounds of the Cure, Cocteau Twins, The
Chameleons and Slowdive rolled into one. These 10 tracks touch on
a wide variety of sounds and emotions ranging from spacey ethereal
drones to blissful up-tempo dreampop beauty. For fans of the early
out-of-print EP's, "Hide Your Eyes" and "The Soft Attack",
"Drowned in a Sea of Sound" is a must have. It is proof

DJ Hide/Dupuy & Bererian
Oumupo 5 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 29TH)
PS, FRANCE Charles Berberian has already proved his love for music
in the recent "Playlist" (Naive) and "Night Buzz"
(Nocturne). The duo he's been making with Philippe Dupuy since the
mid-80s (they gather their talents for drawings and scenarios, an
uncommon distribution of tasks) has become a must in the world of
illustration, cartoons and comics, with the "Monsieur Jean"
series (Dupuis) but also with odder projects like "Le journal
d'un album" (L'association). They took on the Japanese DJ Hide
as a partner on this volume. As the "protégé"
of his fellow countryman DJ Krush (to be heard on OuMuPo 6!), he only
has a single solo album to his name ; and yet in this mix based on
short samples he offers a splendid deconstruction/reconstruction of
the numerous tracks he completely appropriates... to eventually create
a very personal work.

Oumupo 6 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 29TH)
PS, FRANCE Abstract hip hop Japanese master DJ Krush offers a wonderful
opus. Using almost only instrumental parts, progressively introduces
his so characteristic own beats, and slowly makes us forget the rules
and original songs. He uses the most exotic sounds from the label
catalogue (E. Aldéa, Narcophony, T. Belhom, Bästard, D
Petitgand) and manages to develop his proper language to offer a record
that sounds like his own ones. Freedom by the constraints for our
great lessoning pleasure! The booklet is signed by Killoffer, one
of the creators of the independent publisher l'Association and of
the OuBaPo. He transcribes in 64 squares, and the same number of oubapian
collages, the chess game between the surrealist Marcel Duchamp and
the promoter of the Belgian chess association during the first Belgian
championship in 1923.

Elliott, Matt
Failing songs (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 29TH)
PS, FRANCE Matt Elliott has rather an atypical course... He used to
work under the pseudo third eye foundation - emblematic figure of
the English electronic scene recognized for his atypical electro tinted
by drum' N bass. Since his first albums: "the mess we made"
(domino records) and "drinking song" (Ici d'ailleurs...),
Matt Elliott turns to compositions much more folk, forsaking the laptop
and the machines - which go until disappearing on "failing songs",
to return to more traditional instruments (guitar, piano, violin...).
To succeed to "drinking songs", because it's really about
songs, "failing songs" turns Matt Elliott into a true songwriter.
He assumes completely his voice and sings very personal and dark texts.
Songs whose subtle melodies contrast with the hardness of the words
because "Failing songs" is a hard failure report. Between
despair and cold anger, the texts talk about the liberal military
evolution of the world that the author rejects. The Titles are as
sublime as melancholic, bitter and sad, impressed by Slavic music,
Greek, and besides, sometimes punctuated of Spanish guitars, sometimes
close to Dimitri Chostakovitch or Pascal Comelade's sonorities at
his beginnings an artist that Matt however reveals not to know).

Exciters, Thee
Spending Cash, Talking Trash (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 15TH)
PS, UK When their "Dial 'E' for Excitement" (Dirty Water)
was released, NME said: conforming to the rule that any band who spell
"The" with two "e"s will always be beer-soaked
garage rockers, the second single from Thee Exciters comprises four
songs, each more beer-soaked and garage-rockin' than the last. Fittingly
for a band whose singer has a reputation for on-stage nudity, the
likes of "Ugly Face" and "Things Ain't Right"
are the kind of songs that in the unlikely event that they woke up
one morning as dogs would be muzzled, or at the very least made to
wear one of those funny plastic cones around their heads to stop them
chewing their own balls. An oblique recommendation, yes, but we're
standing by it. Mojo magazine, meanwhile, declared that: ...this band's
four tracker is shot through with a raging garage scuzz that is only
properly realised on black plastic. Songs tell of being driven wild
by young women, wanting to start a riot and, on "Ugly Face",
a lousy attitude. When vocalist Paul Le-Brock howls "I hate your
ugly face" you know the band mines the Nuggets motherlode. If
this is your kind of thing, a deep sense of well-being awaits. This
is a groovy, hip-shaking bastardization of the first Them album that's
been copulating with the energy of The Shadows of Knights. "Things
Ain't Right" is the Count Five reborn - psychotic reaction indeed!
But they're not completely lost in the art of retrofication since
they infuse a whole lotta punk attitude in their tunes. Yes! It's
righteous, strip-me-naked- and-paint-me FUZZ RAWK! Forget the Arctic
Monkeys or whoever is flavor of the month this month - dial "E"
for Exciters if you want your rock'n'roll party to kick some booty,
baby! This album includes both their soldout EPs and eight brand new
tracks - plus a complete live set recorded at the Dirty Water Club
as an added extra on the CD version - with fab cover art by renowned
Danish artist Niels Ejnar Rust.

Hammock
Maybe They Will Sing For Us Tomorrow (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 13TH)
PS, US After four well-loved and critically lauded recordings, Hammock
returns with a new full-length, special release, Maybe They Will Sing
for Us Tomorrow, which features eleven new songs and original artwork
by Riceboy Sleeps (Jonsi Birgisson of the Grammy-nominated Sigur Ros
and Alex Somers of Parachutes). At the invitation of Birgisson and
Somers, Hammock gave their first-ever live performance at the after
party celebration of the Riceboy Sleeps overseas debut art exhibition,
held in Hot Springs, AR in August 2007. Maybe They Will Sing for Us
Tomorrow is the studio recording of the original music written and
played by Hammock for the occasion. "Studio performance"
is a more accurate phrase; as the guitars for these songs were recorded
live, just as the band performed them, later rounded out by Matt Slocum's
expansive, emotive cello. This is Hammock reduced to an essence-a
core. There are no intrusions. No beats. No lyrics. There is nothing
to break the spell, or jar the listener out of the moment. "
Maybe They Will Sing for Us Tomorrow" has all of the vulnerability
and spontaneity of a performance, yet all of the rich, cinematic beauty
of a Hammock studio recording. Hammock's self-imposed minimalism is
expertly merged with their hallmark melodic songwriting, resulting
in the most focused, mesmeric and deeply personal album in their catalog
to date. "...music in the spirit of Japanese art-simple by form,
but it's full of complexity in its tone and its timbres." --Bob
Boilen, NPR, All Songs Considered. "Hammock continue their ascent
to godhead status among the drone-rock underground." -All Music

3. This Kind of Life Keeps Breaking Your Heart, 4. Mono No Aware,
5. Three Sisters, 6. Maybe They Will Sing for Us Tomorrow, 7. Elm,

HECQ
Night Falls (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 22ND)
PS, GERMANY Those who are familiar with Ben Lukas Boysen's 5 year
catalog of work will notice an important change while listening to
this album. His former creations can be seen as explorations of different
sound facets transforming Boysen's feelings into music. it took time
for this artist to subordinate the innumerable technical possibilities
to become implements of his inner self, and he already began to walk
this new path with '0000'. Now, Boysen qualifies 'night falls' as
a turning point in HECQ's personal and musical history, and also as
a conclusion of what HECQ stood for until now. Artistic expressions
of personal experiences are often difficult because these experiences
often block the artist's creativity. In exceptional cases it is possible
to do, one of these cases is 'night falls'. The predominant mood of
the twelve tracks which were recorded as one continuous opus ranges
from teariness and melancholy up to beauty and puissance, unleashed
by discontent, the assurance to need a change, or even a stroke of
fate. Never before has HECQ's music implied such melodic and compositional
richness. Comparing the music on 'night falls' with romantic classical
music seems imaginable; majestic strings interact with electronic
soundscapes to bring sentiments into being. This is a manifestation
of a person who is aware that changes happen, and that changes have
to be made. As Boysen says: the sixth HECQ album will be much more
different - this fifth one is the first of many new steps to follow.

styles with a sure ease. Like in his preceding albums, we finds in
slow eater a lot of instruments (clarinet, piano, machines, guitars,
percussions...) and compositions alternating between pop and electro,
passing by the folk music with some winks to the hip hop... Each title
is definitely produced with a smoothness and a rare elegance. I&Fused
is a typical example of what the alternative music is still able to
offer to us in France... I&Fused reveals us a personal and talented
vision of a universal sound, with his thousand and one facets, subtle,

Judys, The
Land Of Plenty [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 2008)
PS, US First ever official release for The Judys last album, recorded
but never released! In 1990, The Judy's set out to record a new album
with a new Judy's sound. Featuring the lineup that had been established
over a number of years the band, including Barbara Donaho (keyboards/guitars),
Lee Malone (bass), and Darwin Keys (drums), set out to explore new
horizons musically and thematically. Land of Plenty injected multi-layered
keyboards and guitars, stacked vocals, a gospel choir, and even a
bit of banjo into the band's palatte and sought to realize Bean's
vision of a new Americana musical landscape. Broad in its scope and
daring in its expansion of the band's definition of itself, Land of
Plenty was shelved when the group disbanded before the CD's release.
While a handful of copies have been given out, this is first time
this long sought-after project has been available to the general public.

Judys, The
Moo [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 2008)
PS, US The original 'Moo' album finally re-issued on CD for the first
time! CD sports seven bonus tracks, mainman David Bean's "Modomusic"
EP. Released almost four years to the day after Washarama and following
an eighteen month hiatus, The Judy's Moo album has a slightly more
progressive sound: richer production values, fuller arrangements and
thicker harmonies. As the band returned to the stage in 1985, this
was the album that showed the band's maturity and development as songwriters
and musicians. The twelve songs on Moo, laced with solid-state irony,
well-placed cynicism and standard issue Judys' wit, show the band
at the peak of their creativity and acted as a springboard for their
live extravaganzas. The album was released with The Moo Tour - a month
of live performances across the state which included giant cereal
boxes, moving conveyer belts of milk cartons, and a dancing cow while
the band donned milkman uniforms. Critically acclaimed and fan-revered,
The Moo Album continues to be a milestone in Texas pop music.

In 1966, The Tomcats went to Spain with a new line-up (one which become

four EPs, one of which was all in Spanish! They then returned to the
UK in 1968, still basing themselves in Ealing and changed their name
to July. As July, they recorded what later became one of the most
sought-after British psychedelic sixties albums of all time. One that
was originally released in the UK on Major Minor (MMLP/SMLP 29) in
1968 and also issued in USA/Canada on Epic (BN- 26416) and even released
in Brazil (Musidisc Hi Fi 2.177). The album s main appeal is its haunting

Kettel
Myam James Part 1 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 22ND)
PS, NETHERLANDS Myam James is maximal electronic music. Kettel manages
to squeeze uplifting, warm, cheerful and enjoyable music out of his
kettle and pottery factory, which is sad, melancholic and sensitive
at the same time. See here the paradoxical twist in much of his work.
Beauty lies in the melancholy. Add to this Kettel's profound knowledge
of composition and we guarantee you'll be chained to your speakers
or earphones for the next months. Probably even longer, because Myam
James part II, the sequel, will also be out by then. The album series
is in the vain of his very successful earlier work here on Sending
Orbs, where Kettel lays claim to the title of Duke of Melody and Count
of Charisle, staying surprisingly, but refreshingly true to the roots
of the Warp sound from the 90's. For the Kettel newbies who wonder
how electronic music like this is possible, some background information
comes in handy. Little Kettel was classically schooled on the piano
to exploit his early-discovered musical talent. He loved to listen
to classical music, especially Bach. Pianist Glenn Gould was his first
idol. Because of his brother Kettel joined the electronic music fanbase
in the mid-1990s. A few years before the millennium Reimer started
producing electronic music himself and within no time he put out releases
on pretty labels as Planet Mu and DuB. He also managed to explore
different sub genres of electronic music and to produce remarkable
crossovers. His ambient album Volleyed Iron (2004, U-Cover) became
an instant ambient classic and the Whisper Me Wishes album (2007,
Dub) was critically acclaimed for a fantastic crossover of jazz, classical
music and electronic music. Remixes for artists as Depeche Mode and
Dash Berlin and a Japanese Kettel tour in 2007 are some examples of
his growing recognition and popularity. The Myam James series on Sending
Orbs denotes the next and absolutely greatest highlight on his discography.
Myam James part I is 9 tracks of Kettel ecstasy, a brilliant "My
Dogan" (title track of the My Dogan 2006 album) remix by early
influencers Phoenecia (Schematic/Warp), as icing on the cake, 7 minutes
of remix synthesizer-madness by Secede (putting on his Vangelis-clothes
once again), and as Eising on the icing an immensely surprising digipack
artwork by Jeroen Advocaat inspired by Kettel's current mental condition.

Myam James Part 1 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 22ND)
PS, NETHERLANDS After two magnificent Sending Orbs albums (Through
Friendly Waters 2005, My Dogan 2006), another brilliant album on Clone/Dub
(Whisper Me Wishes 2007) and a handful of releases in the early 2000s,
Kettel (Reimer Eising) completely forgot how to play the piano, arrange
his compositions, let alone have a reasonable conversation with his
label. He is constantly blathering about "De Spreeuw", a
prune eating lamb, a drunken motorist fish (?) called "De Baars".
Can you follow us? Fortunately, he rolled out and finished the plans
for a new release before all this happened. Maybe it is even our fault,
because we stimulated Mr. Lunatic to release an album series: good
things come in twos, right? Anyway, we hope that Kettel will recover
soon. In the meantime we will keep you occupied with the Myam James
albums. Myam James is maximal electronic music. Kettel manages to

La Monja Enana
Humo y Espejos (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 15TH)
PS, SPAIN LA MONJA ENANA is not your typical group with a defined
path. Throughout their long, and at times, slower than usual career,
they have played in Sweden, Russia, Paris and they put out a compilation
in France and Mexico. The band has also been Single of the Week in
Melody Maker. All of this happened without much effort from the group.
LA MONJA ENANA is relaxed because they know that every once in awhile,
without having to move a finger, something un-heard of happens and
changes their career. Perhaps its largely due to their scientific-literary-paranormal
theme in their music or it could simply be that when you listen to
their music without preconceived notions, you appreciate all of the
wonderful tunes with a catchy melody, a crystal and natural voice,
together with surprising sounds. The fact is, LA MONJA ENANA has numerous
fans in Spain anxiously waiting for the release of their album, "Humo
y Espejo." We are folks who sell out their concerts, sing along
to their songs and know the perfect gestures that go along with each
line. We understand the references of Philip K. Dick and Jack Clayton
in their older songs and with their brand new songs, we'll catch on
to the references of Lemony Snicket in "Café Kafka"
and of Jorgen Leth in "Humano Perfecto." We are people who
admire how all of this may convert into a song and sound so great,
catchy and melancholic at the same time. We are people who are elated
that a group like LA MONJA ENANA exists, because, someone finally
has written a song like "Heróes del Pasado" about
the glorious oldies and because they dare with one of the most unusual
songs by Jonathan Richman, "I'm a Little Dinosaur," offered
as a bonus track on the album. I have the amazing luck to have heard
and learned all of the new songs and that's why I must recommend,
a part from the previous new songs mentioned, the catchy "Canción
de Amor nº 3"- a musical story about the things a technopop
musician would do for love, with Battiato style guitars. The song
"Ciencia Cotidiana" is about all of the scientific phenomena
produced in our daily lives and is also another fine choice. Don't
miss out on "Trucos de Salón," "Raccord,"
"Nomeolvides" or "Veinte Preguntas" all of these
are fantastic songs about love, science and strange phenomena. This
is one of the amazing things about LA MONJA ENANA: their terrific
ability to speak about the rare stuff in life in a very simple and
down-to-earth way.

M83
Saturdays = Youth (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 15TH)
PS, US New album! For M83's chief star-gazer Anthony Gonzalez, his
youth is something he looks back upon with affection, something that
has become the defining theme of his enchanting new album, Saturdays=Youth.
The idea of youth - wasted, gilded or otherwise - has featured prominently
in M83's music. From early fumblings like At The Party on 2001's self-titled
debut to the bliss-fuzz of Teen Angst from 2005's breakthrough album
Before The Dawn Heals Us, the French producer's dramatic space-rock
tends to evoke the innocence and wonder of this hormonally charged
time. But Saturdays=Youth is his most explicit celebration yet of
how it feels to be dazed, confused and 15 years old. "Saturday
is definitely the coolest day of the week for a teenager and that's
the reason Saturday is in the title," he says, as if it needed
explaining. "Saturday always reminds everyone of their youth".
The eighties styling extends to the artwork, featuring a host of characters
including a red-haired Molly Ringwald lookalike on the sleeve. Gonzalez
states his main influences as 80s English bands and classic John Hughes
teen movies such as The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles. "On
this record I wanted to have the feeling of a teenager mixed with
this period of the Eighties," he says. "I also wanted 11
different-sounding songs on the record - none of the songs sound the
same." That might be true, but they each sound distinctly, unmistakeably
M83. Recorded with Ken Thomas (Sigur Ros, Sugar Cubes, Cocteau Twins,
Suede) and Ewan Pearson (Tracey Thorn, The Rapture, Ladytron) Saturdays
= Youth delivers the rich sonic textures for which M83 is well known
-this time with a more focused approach to song structure and form.
M83 is Anthony Gonzalez. He lives in Antibes, France.

For this occasion, the guitarist and singer Christian Quermalet, the
bass player Philippe Lebruman, the saxophonist Etienne Jaumet and
the new drummer Nicolas Courret (Bed, Headphone), who are playing
during representations, have prepared a soundtrack which is alternating
exhilarating songs and transitions spoken by the show's actors. Incomparable

Millimetrik
Northwest Passage's New Era (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 2ND)
PS, UK Pascal Asselin is a founder member of French Canadian dreampop
outfit Below the Sea and half of Anglo-Canadian duo Glider. Pascal
began recording under the name Millimetrik in 2003, uniting his love
of atmospheric ambient (Biosphere, Murcof) with hip-hop rhythms and
breaks. With his background as a drummer, Millimetrik's earlier albums
"Variety is the Spice of Life" and "Deeper Transmissions"
and "The Last Polar Bear on Earth" (all Statik Rek) featured
intricately programmed beats with the music creating an otherworldly
and often unsettling and chilly backdrop. Over the course of recent
releases, such as "Cities EP" and "I Am You Are Me;
Remixes and Unreleased" (both Make Mine Music), the atmospheres
have slowly thawed and melody has come increasingly to the fore. On
the new album "Northwest Passage's New Era", Pascal has
ventured even further down this path and the music has a sense of
emerging from darkness into the light. The intricately programmed
beats are still present, but the emphasis is firmly on melody and
structure, and the sound is rooted in hip-hop rather than ambient
music. Featuring guest appearances by Ulrich Schnauss and Port-Royal
amongst others, the album also sees the first vocals on a Millimetrik
release courtesy of Sean Heenan of Auburn Lull and Marie Jorge, whose
beautiful vocals grace the album's final track. With this new album,
Millimetrik has exceeded the already very high standards of previous
releases. "Northwest Passage's New Era" is a consistently
enjoyable, engaging and varied listen that Make Mine Music is proud
to release.

Monochrome Set
The Independent Singles Collection (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 13TH)
PS, UK Suave; debonair; sophisticated. Haughty, perhaps, for those
who favor the pejorative. Aristocratic in more than one sense, classy
in at least as many. The Monochrome Set were effortlessly inventive,
literate, poised and immaculate of tuneage, possessed of an internal
dialogue as a band that allowed them to surf their own narrative.
They were just unlike anything else, in layman s terms. Instead, their
sound harked back to a golden era of British pop songwriters. But
there was nothing retrogressive about their endeavors. Instead they
wrote songs that recreated the drama and promise of a Pearl &
Dean interval theme, veering from lullaby to mambo to harmonic pop,
accompanied by lush melodies and irresistibly playful lyrics that
embraced morbidity at one extreme, and pitch-perfect satire at another.
Because they could. Brand new release of Monochrome Set's complete
independent singles collection including b-sides and rare tracks Norman
Cook aka Fatboy Slim, a long-term fan of the band, has recorded a
cover of He's Frank with guest vocals by Iggy Pop and indeed this
version has already been broadcast in Heroes. And the word is that

Motorpsycho
Little Lucid Moments (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 15TH)
PS, NORWAY With four long, energetic and evolving tracks ranging from
11 to 21 minutes, Little Lucid Moments is in every way what many hardcore
fans will consider to be classic Motorpsycho in full flight. The album
was recorded by Helge Sten and mixed by Jørgen Træen
(Jaga Jazzist, Sondre Lerche). Mastered by U.S. mastering guru, Bob
Katz. Motorpsycho was founded in 1989 in Trondheim, Norway's third
biggest city, when mainstays Bent Sæther (bass, vocals) and
Hans Magnus "Snah" Ryan (guitar, vocals) were joined by
drummer Kjell Runar "Killer" Jenssen. The first album, Lobotomizer,
was released in 1991 after which Killer quit and Håkon Gebhardt
took over the drums for many years to come. Gebhardt left in 2005
before the recording of Black Hole/Blank Canvas where Bent and Snah
did most of the drumming themselves. With Little Lucid Moments they
have a new, permanent drummer. Kenneth Kapstad is also a member of
Animal Apha and Monolitich and has played with Dadafon, Gåte,
Cucumber and Soundtank. Helge Sten, aka Deathprod, is back as a co-producer
of Lucid Little Moments, and Kim Hiorthøy also returns to design
the album sleeve. With 1993's Demon Box, Motorpsycho were already
laying down the blueprint for much of the stoner psychedelia that
would spawn a number of bands many years later. Since then, and several
albums later, they have developed their personal style to sometimes
include delicate use of brass, strings and other instrumentation,
even flirting with pop structures and shorter songs, but never abandoning
the original spirit of Motorpsycho and the long classic epics like
"Demon Box," "The Wheel," "The Golden Core,"
"Un Chien D'Espace," "Vortex Surfer" and "Radiator
Freak."

Mt. Wilson Repeater
S-T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 15TH)
PS, US After ten-plus years fronting Los Angeles' favorite sons, the
RADAR BROS., Jim Putnam now brings his acclaimed talent for composition,
melody and command of the studio to his new project Mt. Wilson Repeater.
Recorded in his renowned backyard studio in Atwater Village, CA, Mt.
Wilson Repeater is the sound of late nights at the piano, bourbon
in hand, after a day spent watching his dog Hal eat freshly fallen
grapefruit from the adjacent tree. Playing multiple instruments on
the album and utilizing many of the techniques learned from his father,
Bill Putnam, Jim delivers masterful recordings of his trademark aesthetic.
This self-titled debut expresses that warm southern California sun
worshipped by Putnam, the Radar Bros. and their fans yet the similarities
between Mt. Wilson Repeater and the Radar Bros. suddenly come to an
abrupt end. Vocals take a backseat to music on this album-if they
get in the car at all-serving more as an integral part of the sound
and instrumentation rather than as a point of focus. Jim creates lush,
psychedelic arrangements swimming within an intimate bedroom ambience
- a seamless welding of electronic and acoustic worlds. The experiment
that is Mt. Wilson Repeater sits comfortably in the backyard along
with tradition, sharing drinks until tradition passes out, allowing
him to sneak back into the studio.

PS, FRANCE Narcophony is not done with visiting houses, haunted by
the memories of these last thirty years most frantic musicians. After
Nurse With Wound, they are getting down to the mind-expanding work
of the most phenomenal San Francisco pop combo: The Residents. Armed
with a number of musicians balanced around the duet made by Eric Aldéa
and Ivan Chiossone, with Christine Ott (collaborations with Radiohead,
Yann Tiersen... - Martenot's waves) , François Cuilleron (ex-Bästard-
guitars and violin) and Hasmig Fau (cello), Narcophony recycles 13
tracks chosen among the very first works of The Residents (from 1974
to 1985) with the same characteristic unrestrained energy of the avant-garde
band. Reached by the playfulness of contemporary Kraftwerk, the band
turns on an amazing switch from analogical to acoustic. Keeping most
of the patterns for the timeless Ondes Martenot (father of electronic
music), the band takes up the mischievous orchestrations with impulsive
strings and other intrusions of rare instruments. A weird masterstroke
that intensifies the most resourceful period of The Residents.

Occasional Keepers, The
True North (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 29TH)
PS, UK LTM present True North, the second album from The Occasional
Keepers, an ongoing studio collaboration between songwriters Bobby
Wratten (Field Mice, Trembling Blue Stars) and Carolyn Allen and Caesar
(The Wake). True North was recorded and produced by the Keepers with
Ian Catt (St Etienne) in London in February 2008. Guest musician Beth
Arzy (Aberdeen, Trembling Blue Stars) features on The Life Of The
Fields. Retaining plenty of acoustic, reflective elements from the
previous album, this release adds experimental, song-based pop touches
to great effect. Track listing: If The Ravens Leave/The Cricket Laced
Midnight/Town Of 85 Lights/Leave The Secret There Forever/The Life
Of The Fields/Factory Records/I've Realized/Snow And Feathers/Elsinore/A
Distant Piano On A Foggy Night. Praise for The Occasional Keepers:
"This Sarah supergroup lives up to the expectations that come
from such an important meeting of musical minds, and there's a real
synergy here" (Exclaim!); "Often the smallest touches have
the greatest impact, like dropping a bomb on a calm hillside"

Pia Fraus
After Summer (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 13TH)
PS, US Clairecords is extremely proud to present Pia Fraus' new album
"After Summer". After 5 long years, we welcome the Estonian
pop geniuses back to the Clairecords label with open arms. "After
Summer" is produced by legendary Glaswegian Norman Blake (Teenage
Fanclub, BMX Bandits, The Pastels etc). Pia Fraus and Norman Blake
kept file transfer programs busy for months to exchange soundfiles;
this relationship has created something magical. "After Summer"
is the 4th proper album from the Pias, and quite possibly their best
album to date. No wonder, if your idol takes producer's chair! The
album also features some guest musicians: Estonian electronica stars
Galaktlan and Pastacas guest on two of the album's tracks. Moreover,
"After Summer" has the well-known and well-loved Pia Fraus
sound, quality songwriting, a lot of studio tricks and layers of guitars,
synths, and boy/girl vocals. This album will bring huge grins to the
mouths of Pia Fraus fans, yet at the same time it is a perfect introduction
to Pia Fraus for the uninitiated. For fans of My Bloody Valentine,
Stereolab, Chicago Underground Quartet, The Pastels, The Beatles,
and - of course - Pia Fraus!

Ponies In The Surf
See You Happy (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 29TH)
PS, US Ponies In The Surf is quietly one of a kind. Siblings and self
proclaimed indie music nerds Alex & Camile live in Cambridge,
MA though they're originally from Bogota, Columbia. The Ponies build
perfect soft pop songs with elements Samba, Beatles, the more sophisticated
folk set, the Pop Vocal traditionalists and they're very much akin
to The Violent Femmes and Johnathan Richman in terms of song craft,
a subtle humor and vulnerability. The Ponies' work is uniquely comforting
and highly addictive. It is served with a rare passion and grace.
It evokes nostalgia for the above mentioned while remaining firmly
planted in its own special, almost timeless place. "After playing
in rock bands for some time, Alexander McGregor decided at some point
that he simply wanted to make some music that could even appeal to
his grandmother. Joined by his sister Camille, the duo plays stripped-down
folkish type music that sounds like it could have been created at
any point in the past 40 years yet still feels fresh." --ALMOST
COOL. "These powerfully quiet traditionalists perform folk songs
with a pan-American touch. It's only a shame that music this delicate
and warm doesn't garner more notice." -POPMATTERS

may spark a memory of 60s & 70s psychedelic rock or 80s synth-pop,

Transfer (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 22ND)
PS, GERMANY Never before has a TRG album been as self-contained as
'transfer'. Compared to their previous albums one will notice a significant
wave influence and a turning towards contemporary songwriting; here,
the Bielefeld based trio present a mixture between state-of-the-art
electro pop and instrumental tracks which are a perfect invitation
to listen deeply and to 'lift-off' as well. The opener 'move myself'
already points out the direction: catchy melodies, P. Münch's
unmistakable vocals, driving beats and moods perfectly balanced between
joy and melancholy - once again TRG present the perfect connection
between vogue and sophistication - a trademark they are well-known
for since 'state protection'. Contemporary, inspiring electronic songs,
a guaranteed aural pleasure - which also explains the verve of the
'Japanese friends' from Korg who dedicated an extra website to TRG.

Saville, Robin
Peasgood Nonsuch (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 6th)
PS, UK Lugubrious and minimal. Melodic and otherworldly. Hot on the
blistering heels of his debut solo single (VAN 145) comes this full-length
outing from the social worker turned gardener. Double digging over
unlikely boundaries is something of a habit for Robin, and this record
characteristically lurches between moods; from elegiac to wistful,
and from meditative to bouncy, this record runs the full gamut. Creaking
synths, loping bass and a succession of chimes seep from the nimble
textures pressed tightly together. Lush and filmic, the nine tracks
here cultivate and harvest a twinkling yet intense arc, with strange
and alien sounds nestling snugly next to crumpled rhythms and gurgles,
all peppered with tinges of acoustic guitar and eerie tones. 'Peasgood
Nonsuch' works over nutrient-rich electronica soil, germinating an
earthy hybrid of intricately woven melodies and pulses, stewed and
heated to perfection. An organic journey from the pesticide-free plot
to the kitchen table, it's a recipe full of beat-tastic ingredients
ripe for picking from the orchard. As one of half of the duo which
comprises Isan, Robin Saville has long been part of that seminal act
- masters of slow flow electronica, bridging the gap between different
boundaries and atmospheres, not to mention untangling messy knots
of wires and cables all around the world. With its roots closer in
feel to Isan's earlier, more sprightly offerings, 'Peasgood Nonsuch'
is light and warm but with an underlying dark center, so the audible
tranquility is imbued with an altogether tougher edge. Next to using
a digital pipette to suck up the leaked new Portishead album this
gunk of electronic DNA is ripe for unspooling and analyzing in the
Petri dish of your own home laboratories. A must for fans of Isan,
Inch-Time, Harold Budd, and all things Type Records ; Morr Music and
Eno's Obscure label. Edition of 1000 copies in card gatefold.

School, The
All I Wanna Do (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 15TH)
PS, SPAIN Limited edition - Pink colour vinyl. It may be possible
that you may have never heard of them, but this is totally understandable-
they have only played four different concerts since signing to Elefant
at the beginning of the summer of 2007. Since then, their live shows
have increased in number and the group toured throughout the United
Kingdom in October and November with THE LOVES. Skipping about on
stages throughout Great Britain, from Scotland to the south of England
and of course, London, this group has played on numerous occasions
to their fans who come out in the plenty. Before the extensive tour,
in September, they entered the studios with producer Ian Catt (SAINT
ETIENNE, TREMBLING BLUE STARS, SHAMPOO, THE BOO RADLEYS, Kahimi Karie,
THE FIELD MICE) to record two songs which will be a part of their
debut single, "All I Wanna Do," among other songs. This
special edition pink vinyl single will be the waiting room for the
second single and their posterior LP debut, which will be out at the
end of 2008. The fact is that this group of seven, led by the peppy
Liz offers a well-rounded presentation (Amen to the delicious "Kiss
You in the Snow" which came out on our holiday single!), where
their handwriting marks are above and beyond excellent. More importantly,
the pop tunes are filled with emotion. "All I Wanna Do"
reminds us of CAMERA OBSCURA and embraces passion with the legacy
of Phil Spector, with a chorus filled with moving romanticism and
a song that grows with the intensity as each compass is played, embellishing
the melancholy until it stops and it leaves you shivering. "Valentine"
has something else in store for the listener, as it is on the other
side of the single, with a tight chorus (a must to dance to!), an
agile rhythm and Diana Ross thinking that THE SUPREMES never ended.
An amazing B side! Pitchfork, Plan B and Under the Radar have all
spoken highly of them, comparing them to classic bands such as THE
BEATLES, ELO and THE BEACH BOYS and more modern groups like SATURDAY
LOOKS GOOD TO ME, BELLE & SEBASTIAN and LUCKY SOUL, among others.

Way Better Now (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 15TH)
PS, SPAIN Limited edition - white colour vinyl. SPEEDMARKET AVENUE,
a Swedish group with a refined atmosphere, will prove to be, without
a doubt, one of the most talked about musical references in 2008 for
all POP lovers in capital letters. In "Way Better Now" they
leave a good mark of their roots, as an advance to their second album,
titled "Way Better Now" as well. On one hand, the title
song is electric and fast-paced, finished off with a glorious chorus,
in a more distorted THE ESSEX GREEN kind of sound, while "The
New Idea" emanates a certain air of the songs that Nancy Sinatra
and Lee Hazlewood played, offering a more innocent facet of the group,
yet elegant at the same time. Two songs produced by Jari Haapalainen
(producer of ED HARCOURT, INTERNATIONAL NOISE CONSPIRACY, THE CONCRETES
and CAMERA OBSCURA, among others) which gives us one of the best virtues
of the group; their all-terrain inspiration covers multiple styles
and sounds, but has always embraced the pop and melody flag. Groups
such as THE AISLERS SET, THE LUCKSMITHS, LADYBUG TRANSISTOR guide
us to their sound but SLOWDIVE, THE CURE and TREMBLING BLUE STARS
do as well.

Music for Lamping (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 29TH)
PS, US Strategy's Paul Dickow has been a longtime cornerstone player
in Portland, Oregon's electronic and experimental music community.
He was once a drummer in the punk group Emergency, a keyboard player
in jazz/post-rock's Fontanelle, played drums and electronics in Nudge,
DJs eclectic disco and techno sets, and also remixes and produces
dance floor bangers as well as ambient, abstract pop expressions under
his solo moniker Strategy. He has built up a name releasing acclaimed
albums for Kranky and 12"s for labels such as ORAC (Seattle)
and Dreck (London) and also by founding the premier Cascadian freedom
music record label known as Community Library. For years Paul and
Audio Dregs have been comrades and collaborators and now we are proud
to bring you his latest offering that collects Strategy's rain-soaked
chill out recordings and slow motion filtered dubscapes. These are
the tracks rescued from the mornings after the dance parties and longer
compositions collected from his studio in moss covered corners of
green Cascadian forest caverns. "Music for Lamping contains six
years' worth of music that can roughly be called ambient - perhaps
"meditative" is a better word. All of this music combines
my interest in blurring/expanding/clouding processes--such as granular
synthesis, vocoding, and bucket-brigade delay--with happenstance sound
sources, such as field recordings or a favorite record sitting around
the studio. The earliest music dates to a 2002 CD that was never released,
entitled Strategy At Beacon Rock, which was intended as a 'gentle'
or 'atmospheric' treatment of plundered audio. The material from 2004
onwards dates to a period of soundwalks in my neighborhood of Northwest
Portland (a perfect strolling zone). Taken altogether, these pieces
form a traceable thread through my work where I use my usual raw materials
to reach a more liquid, spontaneous end result." -Paul Dickow

Ternheim, Anna
Halfway to Fivepoints (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 22ND)
PS, US Anna Ternheim's first official full-length release in the U.S.,
Halfway to Fivepoints is something of a journey through her already
successful international career. A critical darling in her native
Sweden--where her debut album, 2004's Something Outside, earned her
a Swedish Grammy(r) for Best New Artist--Ternheim has included some
of her oldest and newest material on this album. The lone cover song
on the disc is an exquisitely strippeddown and slowed cover of Fleetwood
Mac's eighties hit "Little Lies." Together, this collection
features quickly-written love stories, tales of loneliness, messy
lives, stalkers and therapeutic kiss-offs to formers lovers. In tracks
like "Lover's Dream," she sought to bring the listener into
another realm, one akin to the grainy, black-and-white world found
in the memorable 1922 film Nosferatu. It's appropriate, as Ternheim's
voice lends a cinematic quality to the disc, at times conjuring Orton's
contemplative alt-folk and even the timeless wisdom of Joni Mitchell--sometimes
within the same song (as on the album-ending title track). Throughout
it all, there's a class to these songs, a beauty to them, and to the
transportative quality of Ternheim's sometimes breathy, sometimes
sweet voice.

Bluff, Wait 'Til You Get 'Em Up in the Air Boys by Harry Fay, and
No More Bully Beef & Biscuits and Plum & Apple, both bemoaning
the monotony of rations at the Front. Spoken word selections include
the somewhat brutal descriptive sketch Capture of a German Spy, and
a rare 1917 recording of a British prisoner of war singing Tipperary,
recorded in Germany. An appeal made by the Prince of Wales on behalf
the British Legion in 1930 closes the album Oh! It's A Lovely War
Vol 4 is a must-have collection for anyone with an interest in the
Great War, as well as military and social historians, and vintage
music buffs. Featured artists include Peter Dawson, Stanley Kirkby,
Harry Champion, Courtland and Jefferies, Harry Lauder, Robert Carr
and Zona Vevey. The booklet includes detailed historical and recording
notes by CD41 editor James Hayward.

Moving Soundtracks (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 15TH)
PS, UK LTM is pleased to announce a CD reissue of the classic compilation
album Moving Soundtracks, recorded for chic Belgian indie label Les
Disques du Crepuscule. Originally commissioned in 1983, Moving Soundtracks
gathered together cover versions of movie music by various Crepuscule
artists and associates, including Paul Haig (The Persuaders), Antena,
Blaine L. Reininger (Le Mepris), Virna Lindt (The Thomas Crown Affair),
Wim Mertens, Steven Brown (Chinatown), Quando Quango, Virginia Astley
and The Pale Fountains (a Bond theme). The overall project was produced
by Tuxedomoon mainstay Blaine L. Reininger. Some interpretations are
faithful, others not! The project was eventually released in 1991,
by which time tracks by Alan Rankine, Peter Hook, La Muerte (Experiment
in Terror) and others had been added. Curiosities include Seabirds,
a charming but obscure Pink Floyd song from the 1969 movie More, and
a splendidly offbeat Godfather cover from Tuxedomoon. Other artists
added to this new CD edition include Thick Pigeon, Tot Taylor and
a former Resident, the late Philip Lithman (aka Snakefinger), with
an amazing interpretation of Fellini's 8 1/2. This new CD edition
has been digitally remastered from the original master tapes, and
features 75 minutes of material. Many of the tracks featured here
remain unavailable elsewhere. The artwork features an original image
by Crepuscule founder Michel Duval, in homage to an Ennio Morricone
album cover from 1964.

Juegos Olimpicos (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 15TH)
PS, SPAIN The fifth volume in the "Teoría y Práctica
Melódica" series. A slightly delayed release, as the series
was conceived as an annual release, but one which has allowed us to
relate it to one of the most relevant 2008 events: ladies and gentlemen,
the Jabalina Olympic Games are officially open! And we're doing it
just some months before the media inundate us with stories about the
Beijing Olympics. Which, of course, have little to do with our own,
more down-to-earth Games - they started as a project with an eclectic
spirit, and the results speak for themselves. Maybe that's why "Juegos
Olímpicos" has actually broken some records: number of
contestants and total length. 23 olympic artists are featured on the
record, some from our roster and some special guests, some Spanish
and some foreign (Pinkie -UK-, heirs to the best British pop of the
90s and the sound of Sarah Records and Soulavki -Chile- one of the
greatest exponents of Andean indietronica, with a touch of 60s flavour).
Together, they've taken this collection to the limit duration for
a CD (79:03 minutes), which makes for one of the best sports-inspired
indie pop compilation ever. The artists in the Jabalina team include
Souvenir, J'aime, Montevideo, Polar, Nadadora, Uke, AMA and Apenino,
and the team of guests features artists such as Francisco Nixon, Flow,
La Costa Brava, La Estrella de David, Pumuky, Travolta or Prin Lal_.
The junior team is full of promising athletes like the alluring Olivia
de Happyland, one of the most promising acts of the new Spanish folk
scene, Nebulosa (which might be the ultimate alias of Charlie Mysterio),
who again oozes the best essence of the 80s songwriters, Llum (the
solo project of Jesús Sáez, from Polar), slowly reaching
maturity and the appreciation he deserves, eclectic DJ Aldo Linares,
who croons his way to become the 'Elvis of Arequipa', Colorado (the
solo project of Modesto, from Zipi Zape) or Linda Guilala, heirs to
the energy pop of Juniper Moon. All in all, a 5th Volume to be proud
of, and which establishes the series as the most prestigious of the
Spanish indie scene. The power of the olympic spirit works miracles,
so something special must have happened to make these twenty-three
independent artists find an unexpected connection between their art
and the heat of the olympic flame. It proves that you need not be
an elite athlete, or even a sporty person, to feel the call of the
olympic flame and reinterpret it musically in your own spirit. Let's
not forget that the universal multi-sport competition from which this
compilation takes its name was originally conceived as an amateur
event, and not for professional sportspeople, a fact that really relates
to the indie spirit of this series and the artists taking part in
it. This is the strongest link there is between the actual definition
of Olympic Games, and the reason that has moved our own celebration
of the amateur spirit that this worldwide event should have. What
we intend to show with this collection is that by applying the olympic
postulates to the independent music, a discipline which is anything
but orthodox, the results featured here, no matter how surrealistic
they might seem, are as legitimate as what the official image of the
Olympic Games might be. As they say, it is the taking part that matters,
and for us it is. But not just that - entertaining and showing a different
take on such an emblematic event was our aim too. But let's get back
to the facts. These are the most relevant figures of "Juegos
Olímpicos": the majority of the songs (16 of a total of
23) are unreleased tracks, and they make up a CD chock full of killer
tunes and eclectic fun which will fascinate the listener. For the
most valuable aspect of this collection is probably the unorthodox
range of interpretations of the same event. Some of the artists focus
on specific Olympic sports, like Nebulosa and his song dedicated to
badminton ("Ba-ba-badminton"), Souvlaki and swimming ("Nadadora"),
Aldo Linares and boxing ("Soy el mejor") and Uke and table
tennis ("Tenis de mesa"). Others champion a sport to become
olympic (Souvenir and "Les surfeurs"). Then there are other
artists who adopt a social point of view (Montevideo and "Olimpiadas
sin medallas") and build a metaphor around the 'other' Olympics
we fight for every day, or a more critical one, like La Estrella de
David's "El parking más grande de Europa", their
ironic take on the Barcelona 92 Olympics, or Pinkie and their bucolic
"Dirty old town". Other songs are dedicated to the personal
sacrifice of athletes (Olivia de Happyland's "Si existe cielo"
or Pumuky and "Lobo estepario contra caballos desbocados en JJ.OO.",
complete with a reference to the work of Herman Hesse). You will also
find songs about sports celebrities (Polar's "Requiem for B.
Johnson", Nadadora's "Evelyn Ashford", and two songs
dedicated to the same athlete - Francisco Nixon's "Nadia"
and Linda Guilala's "La fuga de Nadia Comaneci"). There
are even some artists who have written about personal experiences
from a sports point of view, like Colorado and "El último
partido", La Costa Brava ("Olímpicos"), Travolta
("El día que más corrí de mi vida")
and AMA ("Hasta el ultimo instante"). Last but not least,
the eclectic bunch: Suze's remix of a Flow song ("Se va el avión
a Pekín"), or the lyrical "Naves que dan vueltas
a un balón" by Prin' Lalá. There's room for instrumental
tracks too: "After the game", J'aime (Jaime Cristóbal)'s
cover version of a Brian Wilson's obscure bside from a 1964 single
by The Survivors (a Brian Wilson fake band which only released that
record, with the song "Pamela Ann" on the a-side) and "Ceremonia
de clausura" ("Closing Ceremony") which appropriately
closes the collection. We cannot finish these notes about the 5th
Volume in our "Teoría y Práctica Melódica"
series without mentioning one of its defining features: the artwork.
The series maintains the template that Javier Aramburu designed for
it, and features the work of Nacho Olivares, who has created the beautiful
cover illustration that accompanies this digipack CD. TRACKS: 1. Olivia
de Happyland "Si existe cielo" 2. Nebulosa "Ba-ba-badminton"
3. Souvenir "Les surfeurs" 4. Llum "No more races"
5. Francisco Nixon "Nadia" 6. J'aime "After the game"
(Brian Wilson) 7. Souvlaki "Nadadora" 8. Flow "Se va
el avión a Pekín" Suze remix 9. Aldo Linares "Soy
el mejor" 10. Montevideo "Olimpiadas sin medallas"
11. Colorado "El último partido" 12. La Costa Brava
"Olímpicos" 13. Linda Guilala "La fuga de Nadia
Comaneci" 14. La Estrella de David "El parking más
grande de Europa" 15. Polar "Requiem for B. Johnson"
16. Pumuky "Lobo estepario contra caballos desbocados en JJ.OO."
17. Travolta "El día que más corrí de mi
vida" 18. Nadadora "Evelyn Ashford" 19. Uke "Mesa
de tenis" 20. Prin' Lalá "Naves que dan vueltas a
un balón" 21. Pinkie "Dirty old town" 22. AMA
"Hasta el último instante" 23. Apenino "Ceremonia
de clausura".

A Million Shades Of Blue (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 2ND)
PS, UK Yes indeed! It's Sweet Gene Vincent! Do we need say more? What
else do you need to know? Oh, OK then! Back in the dear dead days
when singers of 30-ish weren't just about to form their first indie
band, GENE, the man who had wowed America, challenged Elvis, launched
Rock n Roll in Britain and France and inspired a generation, was seen
in his native land as a bit of a has-been...his audience was the French
arty intelligentsia and UK Teds...but there were still those who believed
in Gene...one was Kama Sutra, the New York label who brought us The
Lovin' Spoonful and Gene fanatics The Flamin' Groovies (and obliquely
The Shangri-Las too, but that's another story...) In 1969 and 1970
they put Gene in their newly acquired LA studio with the cream of
young session men to produce an album. Taking a cue from The Band,
Bob Dylan, The Sir Douglas Quintet, and possibly fellow not as old
as you might think rocker Dale Hawkins (who had just had an amazing
album out himself!) Gene rose to the occasion bigtime! Possibly one
of the
most unexpected and astonishing albums of roots rock and Americana
is what we have here...with Gene as on good form as ever! ** Another
rediscovered forgotten classic from RevOla! ** Beautifully remastered
By the lovely Nick Robbins...in true RevOla style! ** Ditto goes for

Wedding Present, The
El Rey (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 20TH)
PS, US El Rey - the first new album in over three years from The Wedding
Present - was recorded in early 2008 in Chicago by Steve Albini. The
band returned from an eight-year hiatus in early 2005 with the release
of Take Fountain. This long-awaited album brought them back into the
spotlight with all the style and sophistication associated with a
legendary group, but fans were also pleased to see the band had lost
none of the growling angst with which they had burst onto the scene
with their 1985 debut, George Best. That intensity has been turned
up even further for the new album, El Rey, The Wedding Present's first
collaboration with the legendary Albini since the renowned Seamonsters
in 1991. Written while David Gedge was living in Los Angeles, El Rey
burns with West Coast sunlight; Hollywood seen through the eyes of
a gritty Northerner. Speaking about El Rey in Mojo magazine recently,
Gedge said: "I've been living in West Hollywood for the last
year or so, and while I'm not going to claim that this is my 'L.A.'
album, there are some references. I suppose the themes are lust, jealousy,
betrayal, regret, and obsession, super-heros the usual. We chose to
record with Steve this time because the new songs were sounding very
guitary and quite dark. It's been good. As you'd imagine, really;
Albini knows his stuff". The Wedding Present will be touring
North America in Fall 2008 with the line-up of: David Gedge (guitar
& vocals), Terry de Castro (bass), Graeme Ramsay (drums), and
Chris McConville (guitar).

Yellow6
When The Leaves Fall Like Snow (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 15TH)
PS, UK "When The Leaves Fall Like Snow" is the latest release
by the remarkably talented Leicestershire guitarist Jon Attwood (aka
Yellow6), following ten years of extraordinary creativity, both in
terms of quality and productivity (over 30 hours of music on labels
such as Resonant, Ochre, Darla, and many more). This double album,
bearing the unmistakable and highly personal Yellow6 melodic sound,
was conceived and crafted in Stockholm in the autumn and winter of
2007. Reflecting its place of origin, it showcases Yellow6 at its
most minimal, each of the two CDs providing the listener with a different
way of experiencing the grey and white landscapes of Scandinavia.
The first CD takes you on a sweeping journey through tranquil yet
incredibly deep soundscapes created by Jon Attwood's effortlessly
complex layering of sounds. Nocturnal incursions into the cold and
dark realms of Swedish winter... With the sense of isolation and nostalgia
one experiences when immersed in a vast alien environment. Jon Attwood's
drifting and looping guitars so sonorous and versatile that it feels
at times that you're listening to a full orchestra. The second CD,
with shorter tracks and a less ambient feel, bears the same beautiful
and melancholy qualities in a more intimate way. Imagine the same
landscapes but with a fragile light glimmering in the distance or
with the warmth of sunlight shimmering on the snow. You feel gently
yet irresistibly drawn into the quiet intensity of Yellow6's sonic
world, and Jon Attwood's sound invests silence so totally that it
is difficult to listen to anything else after this album has finished
playing. With "When The Leaves Fall Like Snow", Yellow6
takes you on a wondrous musical voyage without any pre-defined destination.
Just press "play" and let yourself be taken over by the
enchantment of the journey. (V. Martin).

He wasn't the last old guy I saw riding around on a bicycle w/ a giant
musket. One day I asked my friend, What about those old men riding
around on their bicycles w/ the big guns? He whispered behind his
hand: Donsos. Chausseurs. Hunters. This is their music. It is played
before hunts & is meant to both harden the heart & excite
it."

Joke Box (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 29th)
PS, FRANCE Obviously, Zëro's music has more to do with creativity
than with staying in the beaten path of rock with a specific identity.
It's as much Jack Berrocal and Gene Vincent playing a "Drag Queen
blues" under ecstasy and classic Devo's envigorating "Automotown
/ Space girl blues" as it is the krautrock by Can and Kraftwerk
in "Luna Park", an entertaining song which provokes an addictive
cerebral experience. You can also sense Neurotic Pavement, Eternally
Young Wankers Sonic Youth, and a bunch of other freaks, who, all off
the beaten path have constantly re-written the language of rock with
intelligence and singularity. Each title escapes from the previous
one, unclassifiable, escaping from the routine, leaving the listener
with a smile and a chuckle. The "Joke Box" is like the smirk
of an illusionist about to open his magic box. Pleasure and surprise
are always present. The name Zëro, perhaps without the humble
group member's realizing it, is well suited to the fact that their
music is at the origin of this genre of music. "Joke Box"
is a superb anthology.
