A Flock of Seagulls
S-T [re-issue]
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The Liverpool quintet A Flock of Seagulls
first gained attention in the dance clubs with "Telecommunication,"
included on this debut release. The band benefited from heavy play
on MTV and quickly became known for their outrageous fashion and lead
singer Mike Score's waterfall-like haircut. However, their self-titled
debut is an enjoyable romp that was set apart from other synth-heavy
acts of the time by Paul Reynolds' unique guitar style. The kinetic
"I Ran (So Far Away)" became a video staple and a Top Ten
radio hit. "A Space Age Love Song," with its synthesizer
washes and echo-laden guitar, also managed to score at radio. The
rest of the album consists of hyperactive melodies, synthesizer noodlings,
and electronic drumming. The lyrics are forgettable. In fact, they
rarely expand on the song titles, but its all great fun and a wonderful
collection of new wave ear candy."

Anderson, Jason
The Hopeful and the Unafraid
PS, US This album takes a stab at capturing some of the energy JASON
ANDERSON loves putting into every show he plays, whether there are
five or fifty people present. For the most part it succeeds, but to
say that these are the "definitive" or "final"
or "best" versions of these songs would be unrealistic,
it would be straight-up false, actually. Jason says he's come to grips
with the fact that it can never be just the way he wants in the studio;
that the passionate, in-the-moment rush of doing these tunes in a
basement full of singing, sweating friends is where his affection
really lies. This is a bittersweet notion, but maybe explains why
someone would spend half a decade on the road, trying to connect with
people anywhere and everywhere, wanting to make them happy, to make
them feel alive.

Balaam & The Angel
Live Free Or Die
PS, UK Staffordshire's Balaam & The Angel were at the forefront
of the 80s Goth movement, playing alongside some of the biggest bands

1988, has been beautifully remastered and repackaged with the direct

Balaam & The Angel were also hugely popular with rock critics.

Beatundercontrol
Cosmic Repackage
PS, UK Since bursting into the world in the late 70s as a punk-driven
bass evangelist, Sweden's Ulf "Rockis" Ivarrson has since
been on a relentless voyage of musical discovery while paying his
dues to pay the rent. Through early 80s bands like The Quiet, playing
the blues with the Eivon Boogie Band, backing up Swedish guitar hero
Clas Yngstrom in his group Sky High or a host of sessions, Ulf nurtured
a growing desire to uncork an inner vision which sounded nothing like
any of these lucratively-popular positions. After a stint with world
music-techno marauders Hedningama, where he pioneered a new instrument
called the bass mandora, Ulf took the plunge in the late '90s and
started Beatundercontrol. Conventional song structures went out the
window as he explored his fixations with the mighty dub, noise and
experimental music that knew no boundaries, emerging with widely acclaimed
first album The Introduction in 2003. 'Instead of writing banal three-minute
songs with mindless expressions and meaning, I rather try to challenge
myself through textures, noises and basslines,' he explains. This
philosophy is explored with often stunning results on Ulf's second
Beatundercontrol album, Cosmic Repackage, a colossal aural menagerie
of space-jazz brass themes and solo flights, subterranean pulses and
darkhued banks of strings which dart between European avant textures
to late 60s hypno-drone alchemists the Third Ear Band. It's a heady
brew, ranging from the nocturnal back alley jazz of "Neighbourterror
Blues" to the intense freeform scattershots and coruscating atmospherics
of "Departure". If dub's shadow looms over the album, notably
on tracks like the bottomless fizz-bombs of Interruption, it steps
out and flashes its glorious sonic stiffie on the alien skank of "Subversion
Dub", albeit lashed with dissonance and howling winds. From punk
rock to the outer limits, Ulf Ivarrson has cause to celebrate quite
a remarkable musical journey and does so with one of the year's most
intoxicatingly uncompromising aural statements.

Bulbs/Wobbly
Div/orce Series # 7
PS, CANADA The seventh installment of our DIV/ORCE series, a split
7" series devoted to transcending the trivial boundaries of genre,
pairs up two Bay Area acts. Wobbly, a San Franciscan with a vigorous
back catalog, including releases on Tigerbeat6, and collaborations
with MATMOS. His track, Tiny Tongue, features guest vocals by Kevy
B (AKA Kevin Blechdom) and, as a first in the series, guest instrumentation
by his 7" partners, BULBS. It's a wiggly road, teeming with wet
noodle guitar waver, elastic drums, and the type of vocal manipulation
that evokes DAT POLITICS references; a beautifully dizzy track. Bulbs,
a two piece of live-processed guitar and drums (although you'd never
guess it), assemble a marvelously composed mélange of harmonious
static. The track lazily transitions from various degrees of dynamics,
eventually locking into a rhythm led by ghost drums. Best listened
to at loud volume. Another delightfully clumsy addition to the DIV/ORCE
SERIES.

Smoke
PS, UK Since impressing far and wide with their Beats for Bars project
Patrick Bird and Martyn Savigar have now expanded their range of collaborators
to weird, wonderful and sometimes audacious effect. In the immediate
vicinity, there's former Specimen and Siouxsie & the Banshees
guitarist Jon Klein, drummer Chris Bell [also Specimen but a bevy
of 80s giants too] and, showing up in the course of this hallucino-genic
journey, Billie Holliday, Catatonia, Marc Bolan and even the young
John Peel, whose unmistakable and always welcome tones talk about
woodland creatures on 'Deaf Aid' amidst another calming space-shuffle
before singer Anna Jacyszyn wafts in. The concept is mash-up taken
to diverse extremes creating slow motion symphonies which plant some
familiar voices in fields of dreams where the mood is deep, dubbed
and drenched in ghosts as Billie Holliday looms in "Trav'lin'
Light" to spine-melting effect, "Soul Clapp" creates
a new hiphop hybrid, "White Space" is an orchestral treatment
of goth-glamsters Specimen and there are tracks like "Deuteronomy"
where the players stretch out after the guests have left. This is
an opiated aural delight from start to finish, by which time you might
be stroking the ceiling like a long-lost friend, satisfied that now
the world's a better place and wondering why they don't make them
like this any more.

Rose/Thorn
PS, US "Long-, long-, long-, loooooong-awaited and singular entry
in the Charalambides and Klang Industries discographies; one of those
'does it really exist?' items that's finally seeing daylight, or moonlight.
A stark, unsettling and beautiful slice of duo Charlambides invocation/incantation,
taken from the period between Jason Bill and Heather Leigh Murray's
tenures with the band and featuring extraordinary chord organ and
vocal work from Christina and some signature lap steel mastery from
Tom. Fans of the band's most recent, more song-based work will find
this relevatory, long-time listeners will say 'ahhhh' and settle in
for the flight. Heavy vinyl, limited pressing, cover handiwork by
Tom, the first release in years from Klang and a sign perhaps of a
truly epic revival." "Long-awaited Klang debut of Charalambides.

heavy fuzz guitar and truly wasted vocals, one of the absolute cornerstones
of Japanese psychedelia. In fact, to many people, this is the ultimate

songs about drugs and girls. Tracks such as 'Requiem of Confusion,'

Drift, The
Memory Drawings
PS, US In the nearly three-year gap between their debut album, "Noumena",
and this follow-up, THE DRIFT have toured extensively throughout North
America and Japan. All that tripping did wonders for their songwriting
process, inspiring efficiency with their structures while maintaining
the intoxicating song lengths they are known for. Though the music
on "Memory Drawings" is familiar, there is a depth to both
the performance and production that feels new all over again. Recorded
directly to analog tape with longtime producer Jay Pellicci at Tiny
Telephones in San Francisco, the mix is used as another instrument
to help shape each song, channeling the mythos of late 60s jazz and
late 70s dub classics. As The Drift have narrowed their focus, they
have expanded their influences. Nowhere is this more obvious than
"Uncanny Valley," with its shades of Afro-beat and disco-soul;
or the dramatic, deserted ballad "Lands End." With "Memory
Drawings", they have truly found their groove - and the deeper
they dig, the more curious we become.

Egg
Self-Titled
PS, UK This now legendary debut album by Egg featured the talents
of Dave Stewart on Keyboards, Mont Campbell on Bass and Clive Brooks
on Drums. Egg were associated with the so-called "Canterbury"
style of rock music pioneered by artists such as Caravan and Soft
Machine. The trio produced music of startling originality and energy,
drawing on influences ranging from rock to jazz to psychedelia to
classical. This fusion resulted in one of the most enduring releases
to appear on Decca's short lived Nova imprint and is now critically
regarded as one of the more unique albums of the early 1970's. Re-mastered
from the original tapes, the Esoteric Recordings reissue includes
three bonus tracks, including both sides of the bands only single
and "Movement 3" from the albums notorious opus "Symphony

Explorers Club, The
Do You Love Me? / Carry Me
PS, US In the age of the MP3, flavors of the "month" circulate
far faster than Baskin Robbins can rotate their cooler. It is refreshing,
then, to hear something timeless every now and again, and the EXPLORERS
CLUB is just that. This is sunny psychedelic pop replete with lush
arrangements and cushy four-part harmonies that harken back to a decade
long ago, when kids turned on their FM radios to find the cool new
thing. These boys are not indie-rockers thieving from the vaults of
the classics - the Explorers Club writes pop songs that sound as authentic
as if they had actually just been unearthed for a new Nuggets collection
or Sundazed reissue. The band draws on the soul-satisfying vocal style
made famous by the Beach Boys and the Association, and pairs it with
arrangements patented by the likes of Phil Spector, the Left Banke
and the Zombies. And like their musical heroes, the Explorers Club
understands the meaning of a great single. With that in mind, we are
pleased to share "Do You Love Me" - the first jewel from
their forthcoming album, "Freedom Wind". "Do You Love
Me" dabbles in Brian Wilson-esque majestic pop, while the exclusive
B-side, "Carry Me" has flourishes of doo-wop and soul amidst
its choral pop.

Fairport Convention
S-T
PS, US Reissue of the 1st Fairport album, originally released by Polydor
in 1968. "The best British folk-rock band of the late '60s, Fairport
Convention did more than any other act to develop a truly British
variation on the folk-rock prototype by drawing upon traditional material
and styles indigenous to the British Isles. While the revved-up renditions
of traditional British folk tunes drew the most critical attention,
the group members were also (at least at the outset) talented songwriters
as well as interpreters. Released in 1968, FC's debut album owes more
to The Byrds than to Pentangle, with soaring harmonies and psychedelic
guitars. Recorded pre-Sandy Denny, Judy Dyble sang like a siren and
then left to form Trader Horne."

For Against
Shade Side Sunny Side
PS, US Signposts: Factory Records, Joy Division, Section 25, Interpol,
My Bloody Valentine. WORDS ON MUSIC is proud to release "Shade
Side Sunny Side," FOR AGAINST's seventh full-length record and
first studio album since 2002. As the Lincoln, Nebraska trio approaches
their 25th anniversary on the independent music scene, FOR AGAINST
has reemerged with an exclamation point: "Shade Side Sunny Side"
is a landmark record for the band, boasting FOR AGAINST's darkest
(and loudest) material to date. The post-punk roots of FOR AGAINST's
early years are firmly in place, but presented throughout 9 new songs
with a more expansive and atmospheric sonic palette. "Shade Side
Sunny Side" also marks the notable return of original FOR AGAINST
guitarist Harry Dingman III, who formed the band with vocalist and
bassist Jeffrey Runnings back in 1984. Dingman left FOR AGAINST after
1988's seminal dream pop record, "December." For the new
album, the prolific Runnings-Dingman songwriting team picks up right
where they left off 20 years ago, when they wrote the classic post-punk
material that comprised "Echelons," "December,"
and "In The Marshes" all within a 2- year span. "Glamour,"
the album's opening track, is a fierce proposition that tours the
early FACTORY RECORDS sound before segueing into a cold post-punk
stomp coated by Runnings' icy vocals. Songs like "Underestimate"
and the album closer "Irresistible" sparkle with a pop grandeur
hinted at by 2002's "Coalesced" album, but infused with
unmistakable guitarwork revealing the fingerprints of Dingman's return:
searing feedback, atmospheric chord-play, and inspired hooks are coaxed
together to form a musical backbone that is both furious and gorgeous.
"Aftertaste" is a blistering song that melds the musical
sensibilities of JOY DIVISION's early WARSAW years with production
by MARC OSTERMEIER (SHOULD) hinting at WIRE's "154." "Shade
Side Sunny Side" also includes a cover version of "Friendly
Fires," written by Factory Records' SECTION 25, from their 1981
debut "Always Now." "Shade Side Sunny Side" also
includes some of the most heartrending accounts by Runnings to date.
The album reveals itself as a confessional and therapeutic musical
diary, with several songs recounting the tragic life and loss of a
close family member, from the acerbic "Glamour," to the
haunting ballad "Why Are You So Angry?," and culminating
in "Game Over," where Runnings is at his most defenseless,
singing nakedly on piano through the first verse and chorus. FOR AGAINST's
musicianship on "Shade Side Sunny Side" is in top form,
reflecting a maturity befitting their quarter century of songwriting
and performances and a freshness that has drawn together an interesting
union of dream pop enthusiasts in the USA and a strong dark wave following
in Europe.

Fred
Live at the Bitter End
PS, GERMANY Who or what on God's earth is Fred? In Swedish, Fred means
'peace', a good idea for any decade. In music, Fred is an upstart
band of pseudo-bumpkins (aka hippies) from the hills of central PA
(really just kids from mid-Atlantic suburbia lost in the purple haze)
who took Greenwich Village by storm in 1974. Recorded over the summer
of 1974 while Fred was headlining at NYC's world famous nightspot
The Bitter End, these are raw, in your face live performances that
will lift you up and blow you away. It is high octane, aggressive
electric instrumental music with a pulse pounding beat, wailing gutsy
guitar, and wild violin pyrotechnics. Live at the Bitter End features
all new original music, ranging from tender to tortured, demented
to delirious, always energetic, edgy, enigmatic, and full of surprises.
With strong melodic themes over innovative rhythms, six pieces of
the puzzle are carefully arranged into a seemingly endless variety
of combinations, and then each is set loose over elegant structures
for solo flights in the twilight zone of improvisation. Influenced
by Mahavishnu, Zappa, Jethro Tull, Yes, Spirit, King Crimson, Bartok,
and Stravinsky, as well as inspired by musicians like Jean-Luc Ponty,
Jerry Garcia, Bill Bruford, Herbie Hancock, John Bonham, Jerry Goodman,
Robin Trower, Joe Zawinul, Chris Squire, and Stephane Grappelli, Fred
had by 1974 assimilated and fused a staggering array of disparate
elements into their sound.

Hinterland
Pan Pan Medico
PS, CANADA FILE UNDER: moody, new wave-flavoured dreampop. FOR FANS
OF: Cocteau Twins, the Cure, Ladytron, Sigur Ros, Mew. Pan Pan Medico,
the third album by Vancouver's Hinterland, is a study in contrasts.
From the new wave-flavoured synth-rock propulsion of "Detwiller
Pavilion" and "Somatoform" to the haunting ambiance
of "Future Ghost" and the jangly dreampop of "You Speak
< I'm Silent", the album is anything but predictable. What
holds the whole thing together is the confidence with which the band
swings from distortion-saturated rock to ethereal layers of electronic
sound. Working again with Caleb Stull (who also produced 2006s The
Picture Plane), Hinterland explores both darkness and light on Pan
Pan Medico. The album takes its title from a nautical distress call,
and the lyrics of singer Michaela Galloway more often than not express
a strong desire to escape - from obsessive thoughts, from earthly
bonds, and from deep-seated resentments. The band bolsters these themes
with a signature sound that critics have described as "epic"
(Vancouver Courier), "intelligent, thoughtful indie rock"
(Columbia Journal), and "nearly flawless" (See Magazine).

Hornet Leg
Blood Trilogy
PS, US HORNET LEG, the new Northwest fuzz harbingers in tune with
the "heavy", identify the primal symbolisms of blood as
fear, death and paradoxically, life. The "Blood Trilogy",
condenses the full length concept album into three potent tracks of
pure unsentimental, raw energy. Expertly engineered by CALVIN JOHNSON
at the Dub Narcotic Studios, these recordings are an immediate grab
to the throat but leave a haunting grip to the ears. Chapter 1: "Bleed
The Blood", a groovy mid tempo churn, represents the immediate
loss of spirit that occurs when love is lost and never regained. To
bleed the spirit is to bleed the blood and thus the spirit is bled.
Chapter 2: "Covered In Blood", has the pounding scream and
scrape when one is exposed to the blunt force of brutality. Anger
and fear become intertwined and fused into the "bad" parts
of the subconscious and the ensuing detriment can make vibrations
that sound very similar to the distorted electric guitar. Chapter
3: "Bloody Hands", is a requiem for the (un)dearly departed
sung in the style of a ghostly lullaby. A melodic question is posed
- Is consciousness tethered to the physicality of blood? The arterial
guitar and voice of Chris Sutton (Dub Narcotic, C.O.C.O) is the jugular
vein carrying the sound of this group's unique garage punk. The heart
pumping rhythm is the bash and thrash of one Claudia Meza (Japanther,
Thunder Thunder Thunder). Joel Brazzel (K Records darling), a full-fledged
ghost member, contributes shaker and tambourine work in the session
that produces just the right amount of evil.

Incredible Vickers Brothers, The

PS, US Hailing from the wooded coastal community of Felton, California,
The Incredible Vickers Brothers have crafted a kind of music as familiar
as the seasons and as unpredictable as the weather. Having honed their
skills in apprenticeships with legendary California bands Cerebral

time was right to strike out on their own. Setting up camp with producer

Vickers Brothers want nothing less than to take their place among
the great brother acts of history! Influenced by the zany surrealism
of the brothers Marx plus the yin-yang/love-hate relationships of
Phil & Don Everly and Ray & Dave Davies, the Vickers Bros.
aim to mix a myriad of ingredients, musical and otherwise, into the
forever boiling pot of rock music. * "Gallimaufry" hash,
stew [15-th Century French] 1. a mixed-up jumble / 2. a ridiculous
medley / 3. a promiscuous assemblage.

Karmic Society
Journey
PS, GERMANY The quartet was founded in 2005, in Heidelberg (Germany)
and plays with a great level of proficiency and on authentic equipment
to get their analog 70's sound. Mostly instrumental jams, the Karmic
Society reflects the traditional Krautrock jam-spirit of Kraan, Message,
Epitaph, combined with US west coast influences, but also progressive
fusion rock elements like Mahavishnu's McLaughlin, Chick Corea or
Keith Emerson. Besides a unique rhythm section, you can look forward
to beautiful melodies and varying compositions fitting perfectly to
a festival sunny afternoon. A massive, swirling Hammond organ by Winnie
Rimbach-Sator (also plays keys with Treacle People) is in communication
with excessive Stratocaster guitar solos melting into unexpected orgies
of sounds. This album contains 4 originals and 4 improvised covers
tunes which are 'Dark Star' (Grateful Dead), 'Witches Moon' (Quicksilver
Messenger Service), a heavy 'Spacepatrol Orion' version (authorized
by Peter Thomas -- sci-fi sound from the mid-60s) and 'Yoo Doo Right'
(Can) as a 17 min. version with stunning moog space parts and tribal
voodoo percussions. The production sounds natural and grew from a
free concept to a strong compact album of 65 mins intense music. (btw:
3/4 of the band support the US group Dragonwyck at live shows). The
CD contains nice artwork and an 8 p. booklet. Highly recommended to
sophisticated rock/fusion/jam listeners who like intense organ vs.
guitar battles and to those who like to enjoy well produced experimental
sounds to test their audiophile stereo equipment.

Leyers, Dirk
Alma
PS, GERMANY Dirk Leyers presents his first record for Klang Elektronik.
"Azul" is an impulsive track, with an anxious, meandering
bass line and bright synthesizer sounds, while the beat unerringly
gallops directly towards dancer's heaven. On the B-side, Dirk calms
down a little bit and begrudges us with a conveniently laid-back,
almost ambient piece of music called "Azur" before he relieves
us with the spheric, whispering "Alma."

The Outside
PS, US ELIOT LIPP continues his impressive retooling of analog infused
electro-funk with his latest full-length, "The Outside",
his first for MUSH RECORDS. Techno and hip-hop in their earliest,
formative stages have inspired Eliot throughout his career, and form
the common thread running through the album. Slick analogue synth
work and tight drum programming abound, as Eliot deconstructs his
influences to create something that is both recognizable and completely
futuristic. For listeners who remember a time when electronic music
had a little dirt under its fingernails, "The Outside" will
truly capture your imagination.

utilize a variety of more traditional instruments (accordion, Moog,
xylophone) along with such noisemakers as soup pots, shoes, squeaky

coast to coast and with a kinetic stage presence, Man Man are a musical
contagion waiting to happen. They've toured with Cat Power, Arcade

Park Avenue Music
By Hearts + Horses
PS, US Sacramento couple Wes Steed and Jeannette "Juju"
Faith got a shiny new piano - really shiny. So up went the mics and
out came the music. Flowing pieces of raw improvisation from Juju
were recorded and then dressed, bit by bit, by Wes in layers of modular
synth distortion; some for the fun of making soundtracks for short
films by New Zealand artist and web designer Fuyuko Akiyoshi; some
for the fun of mixing 10 minutes of piano music down to 3; or making
3 minute songs out of 4 measures of sometimes bluesy, sometimes ethereal
use of the 88s. When one mic picked up off-the-cuff vocals for several
tracks, another picked up the team's beloved cat Harrison's collar
bell ringing in the background for what seems the sweetest topping
to the already honeyed instrumental "Norway Kitty", the
opening track on what has become park avenue music's loveliest accomplishment
yet. Befriending cellist Gretchen Lehtonen in time to add her touch
to that first track (even if recorded backwards) was a lucky move.
The trio has played a handful of boutique performances, each one unique
and special as they improvised in the dark while streams of Akiyoshi's
imagery served as backdrop. They have also brought a crowded house
of listeners to silence - even when equipment failed, piano and cello
went on to duet without the noise of synthesizers, drum machines,
and Unix-based applications. "by hearts + horses" may seem
an odd title, but given that the band has morphed over the years and
is indeed changing their name to "hearts + horses", this
last effort as park avenue music seemed only fit to be thusly titled.
(File under Park Avenue music and/or Hearts + Horses.) "While
many artists are using a Moog, Roland, or Juno for bouncy pop, Park
Avenue Music approaches the unique instruments as if they were gentle
as flowers. It could be Jeannette Faith's concert pianist training
or simply a love for exquisite sounds. Either way, To Take With You
is an alluring ensemble of downtempo and quiet, sophisticated pop."
-Kenyon Hopkin, All Music Guide "Mixing very nice programming
of lush electronics with soft, breathy female vocals, it manages to
sound somewhat like several different things...without really sounding
too much like anyone." - Almost Cool "I'm starting to think
that this sort of electronic pop is the new shoegaze for me-no matter
how many times I hear these wispy, glitchy sounds, I never seem to
get tired of them. And that's especially true when a band like Park
Avenue Music does it this well." - Opus Zine

Portico
Progeny Blues
PS, CANADA Progeny Blues was recorded in the fall of 2006 at Vancouver's
Mushroom Studios and co-produced with Shawn Penner and Aaron Nordean
(Hot Hot Heat) and mastered by Alan Douches (Sufjan Stevens, Mastadon,
Ben Folds Five) of WestWestSide Music NYC. "Portico are simply
one of the best Canadian bands working today. Even if lead singer
Lyn Heinemann wasn't a husky sweet powerhouse vocalist, the rest of
the band have mastered the art of mixing delicate musical phrasing
with mid-tempo urgency. Whether they function as a standard four-piece
or flesh out the material with epic gang vocals, or a surprisingly
effective horn section, there isn't one note out of place on Progeny
Blues." FFWD "This release is a rock solid recording of
a band that just has it. The songs are big and modest at the same
time, and the vocals and lyrics are engaging and mysterious. This
album has everything I love about top shelf independent music."
Zunior's Top Picks 2007 "This is a confident-sounding sophomore
release that is quite the thing of beauty when it connects. Although
there is energy, it crackles just under the surface, only making overt
appearances on some occasions. The band are going for atmosphere and
they succeed quite nicely, as this album has a great consistent feel
that makes it one of those listens that actually gets better if experienced
as an album. Something great is indeed brewing." -!Exclaim "In
a week with a plethora of record releases, Vancouver-based pop band
Portico will have a tough time getting noticed. And that will be a
shame, since the group's second full-length is definitely worth a
trip to the record store. Standouts include All You Daughters and
the relatively upbeat Stand Down, but all the songs, despite being
mostly dark and serious, definitely deserve your attention."
NOW Toronto (NNNN Critic's Pick) "This Vancouver band's sophomore
album boasts some of the most understated, husky and unique female
vocals I've heard-add to that some captivating melodies and just enough
lyrical feistiness to lend some edge (take the previously featured
scorcher, "Sincerely," for instance), and you've got the
recipe for an enticing and highly recommendable album." Wolves,
Hawks, and Kites' Top Unsung Albums of 2007 From winters of horribly
cold snow and small-town grumpy relatives to boarded up downtowns
and decaying infrastructure, Portico's sound and lyrics are a living
soundtrack. The combination of Greg Murray (drums), Mimi Mahovlich
(bass), Trent Hopton (guitar and keys) and Lyn Heinemann (guitar and
vocals) creates "a blend of spectral melodies, tricky time signatures,
and expertly intertwined guitar lines which is entirely it's own"(The
Georgia Straight).

Secret Shine
All Of The Stars
PS, US "All of the Stars" is Secret Shine's second studio
album, and their first in 14 years. The band took an unscheduled nine
year break before returning in 2004 with the release of their back
catalogue (After Years) on Clairecords, followed by two emphatically-received
EPs of new material in 2006, and live shows in Europe and America.
"All of the Stars" encapsulate the passion of Secret Shine's
live power pop in the heart-thumping 'Oblivion', 'Voice of the Sea'
and 'The Sound of Light' but is both delicate and beautiful in 'All
that's left' and 'Last Leaves'. Secret Shine has lost none of the
sumptuous boy/girl harmonies and celestial melodies (never more evident
than in the heavenly 'Stars in the Sky') that made their debut album
Untouched such a classic that is still revered in shoegazing circles
today. Secret Shine dedicated 2007 to write and record All of the
Stars and demo'd twice the amount of songs they needed for the album
so that only the finest would survive. The band have grown on this
record - the sound is stronger and more confident, expertly produced
and directed by Shine protagonist Jamie Gingell. The band drift effortlessly
between the epic, orchestral arrangements of 'Café Crash' and
the sparse, haunting piano-led 'Another Day'. All of the Stars would
sit comfortably alongside shoegaze classics like Slowdive's Souvlaki,
My Bloody Valentine's Loveless and The Pale Saints' The Comforts of
Madness, but Secret Shine have created their own unique treasure and
possibly the new wave of 'stargaze'.

Swift, Richard
Richard Swift as Onasis
PS, US The double-EP "Richard Swift as Onasis" is as creatively
fortifying as it is unhinged and unpolished, a primal slab thrown
into the fire for dancing and merriment during the chilly months while
we await RICHARD SWIFT'S second full-length. Once upon a time, the
idea of a record was to capture a performance, to grab the those undulating
wavelengths from the air and stick them to this thing that went round
and round, so later on that performance could be heard and felt and
experienced again. Before the beloved studio trickery of our beloved
Beatles or Beach Boys, cats gathered around a couple microphones,
plugged into that thing that went round and round, and let at it.
So it's no surprise Swift, a long-in-the-tooth impresario of all not-a-computer,
would jangle and stomp out this tangent of jams that tape-echo a generation
of pioneers who believed Rock and Roll and the Blues a celestial calling
and not a lifestyle choice. Now most listeners won't think about how
Swift did this on a cheap four-track; they won't immediately see his
nods to Link Wray and Howlin' Wolf; it doesn't matter. The songs stand
up. The songs get in your belly and wiggle your hips and stomp your
foot and bob your head. They got vibe and atmosphere. They act like
great harmony, making whatever they're accompanying richer and wider
and thicker.

Tears Run Rings
Always, Sometimes, Seldom, Never
PS, US When members of Tears Run Rings didn't play well with a big-shot
producer, they threw away the old material and set off to create an
album on their own. There was only one dilemma: they were now living
in three different cities. This Portland and Seattle by way of L.A.
collaboration was accomplished in the style of the Postal Service;
occasional weekends together produced the frameworks for songs that
took shape as they swapped tracks using CDRs and the good 'ole internet.
Three years and one self-released EP later, Tears Run Rings presents
its debut full length, Always, Sometimes, Seldom, Never. Tears Run
Rings features ex-members of The Autocollants, Laura Watling, and
both of the masterminds behind Shelflife Records. These pop veterans
have abandoned their twee roots and traded it for dense, wall-of-sound
arrangements and aggressive distorted guitars -- but that's not to
say they have forgotten their pop sensibilities. TRR distances themselves
from 90's shoegazers with upfront vocals and catchy singlenote guitar
riffs. Their creation is melodically rich, brimming with layers of
boy-girl vocals inspired by the harmonies of 60s groups such as The
Lennon Sisters and The Caravelles. One of the album strengths is its
flow through a range of different tempos. It begins with a lulling,
almost hypnotic "Happiness (part one)", explodes with the
hard-driving kick of "How Will the Others Survive," then
regresses into the atmospheric and melancholy "Beautiful Stranger."
TRR demonstrates their affection for Moose's "Live a Little,
Love a Lot" by splicing tracks together with ambient noise: church
bells ring out of the end of "Mind the Wires" introducing
the danceable "Run Run Run"; a cappella voices and the tap
of an organ unite "The Weight of Love" and "World Upside
Down." Still, the most powerful element of Always, Sometimes,
Seldom, Never is the deep, heartfelt (and occasionally heartbreaking)
conviction heard here. But maybe this comes natural for band members
who spend most of their time wishing they could just be together.

#132 (May 2008) [Magazine + CD]
PS, UK Editor's Letter: What I most wanted to talk to Robert Plant
about when I met him last August was Raising Sand, the album of what
he called "dark, sexy Americana" he'd recorded in Nashville
with bluegrass singer Alison Krauss and producer T Bone Burnett. That
album was unlike anything Plant had done previously and seemed to
me the best thing he'd put his name to in the long years since the
demise of Led Zeppelin. Of course, by the time we meet again in Birmingham
five days later to talk in more detail about the album, there's something
else looming. Plant, not wanting to be misleading or evasive, eventually
confirms in confidence that, yes, Led Zeppelin would be reforming,
for one show, at London's O2 Arena. The eventual official announcement
provokes an incredible reaction, an absolute frenzy for tickets. The
gig itself - delayed once, by an injury to Jimmy Page - turns out
to be by general consent a triumph. Surely, it was argued, the taste
they'd had of being Zeppelin again would prove irresistible to everyone
involved, including Plant, whatever his commitments to a tour with
Krauss and T Bone. Ever since, the speculation about what they might
do next has continued, as they say, unabated. Will they tour? Make
a new album? What had it been like for them, back together at the
O2, and what would it take for them to do it again? In this month's
exclusive Uncut cover story, you can find out what Plant, Jimmy Page
and John Paul Jones have to say about the reunion, each other, what
it was like to be Led Zeppelin again and where they go from here.
It starts on page 36.

Winston Tong
In A Manner of Speaking (Best Of)
PS, UK LTM are pleased to present In A Manner Of Speaking (Best Of),
a collection of outstanding tracks by Winston Tong, the songwriter
and performance artist best known as front man of the group Tuxedomoon.
Recorded between 1982 and 1990, the twelve tracks gathered on In A
Manner of Speaking include five tracks from Winston's acclaimed 1985
solo album Theoretically Chinese, produced by former Associate Alan
Rankine and featuring a stellar cast of guest musicians including
Jah Wobble, Steven Morris, Simon Topping and Dave Formula. Two are
in the form of dance remixes previously only available on an Italian
maxi single. This Best Of CD also features representative tracks from
Winston's other two solo albums Like The Others and Miserere, as well
as rare compilation tracks: covers of Duke Ellington's Prelude to
a Kiss, witty festive ditty The Twelve Days of Christmas, and Syd
Barrett's Late Night. Also included are two especially memorable Tong
songs recorded with Tuxedomoon, Albert Camus tribute The Stranger
and In A Manner of Speaking, the 1985 song later covered by Martin
Gore of Depeche Mode and more recently by Nouvelle Vague. As a result
of the Nouvelle Vague cover version, IAMOS has now become a standard,
featuring in the soundtracks of several high profile movies and television
shows, including A Mighty Heart, Sugar Rush, Fragile and Riviera.
The booklet features a detailed biography of Winston Tong, as well
as archive images. Winston Tong is alive and well and living in San
Francisco, where he continues to perform in live and theatre events.

There Is a Part of Me That You Will Never Know
PS, US This is not haphazard but a symbiotic
collaboration bridging distant roads. This full length LP is a dark
casket of scorched earth sounds, the remains of the cracks at the
after shock of discovery. Reminding us of the peaks in either artists'
catalog, this processes the deepest sounds of these 4 masters in a
haze of lone atmosphere & true noise. This is not a terror shock,
this is the end.

Yard
Detrit
PS, US After dropping some serious science on European labels, Yard
turns stateside to Binary Dilemma with a 12" of transcendent
organic techno. Detroit grinds and resonates with 909, breaks and
aquatic washes of sound bringing to mind gritty Detroit streets. As
the beats pound, cascading melodies flood the field and take this
to Neo-Detroit next level shit. Squeekr is an aquatic sexy grind of
groovy techno reminiscent of an urgent meeting between Pan Sonic &
Mark Pritchard while a monster bass line drives hallucinogenic synths,
as if they've been dubbing around the dancefloor by Lee Scratch himself.
On the flip we're treated to a deep acid remix of Detrit by the legendary
Dutch brothers of Funckarma aka CANE. Dropping the ones and zeros
as they've never been spun before, sending 303 sequences ricocheting
against the chopped beats of the original. Anders Ilar's remix finishes
the 12" out with a lush rendition of Detrit that croons and swoons
in all the right places. LUSH.

22 Pistepirkko
(Well You Know) Stuff Is Like We Yeah! [regular version] (ON SALE
/ PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 22ND)
PS, FINLAND New 2008 album from Finnish psych-pop phenoms! The fab
three, back with guitar-based spaced-out bohemian blues-rock and proto-garage-psychedelia,
produced by Kramer (Galaxie 500, Daniel Johnston, Ween, Bongwater).
Recorded in just 10 days at the band's own Altai studios 22-Pistepirkko
step forward with their idea of impressive simplicity, lively trio-playing
and good melodies. After periods of heavy experiments in electronic
production work, their current concept of keeping things simple was
already their approach for the Drops+Kicks (2005) album sessions.
Now, with the new album one can hear it in full bloom. P-K Keränen's
vocals and guitar playing have gathered depth that one doesn't hear
too often. Additionally, drummer Espe Haverinen simplified his playing
to a great effect and sings more touching songs then on any other
album. Asko Keränen's sonic bass, weird organs and effects add
a room with a view, so specific 22pp and just right for producer Kramer
to play with those bits and pieces in a most gentle and subtle way.
Chris Bailey of The Saints heard it and wrote: "From the first
bars of the opening track you know you are in for a treat, this record
is MAGIC. Each song has its own personality and reference point which
should defy inclusion on the same album yet all combine to create
an astonishing journey through all that is glorious about pop music.
...a stupendous piece of work!"

PS, US POPMATTERS: "Forgoing lead guitar for shambling, sinister
organ licks, DC post-punk outfit the Apes strike a strange middle-ground
between minimalism and maximalism. Lacking guitar accompaniment, Jeff
Schmid's drums and and Erick Jackson's bass tend operate in spare
cages of plunging rhythms and blurting stabs, and when the keys afford
them some space, the whole feels crisply open. However, just as often
as organist Amanda Bynes allows herself to be constrained by the others'
rhythms, she surges past and breaks free, letting her organ swell
to fill every gap with psychedelic squeal."

Arc Lab
The Goodbye Radio (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 22ND)
PS, US Medard Fischer returns with his rather cryptically-titled third
album, "The Goodbye Radio". Representing a large step forward
for Fischer's Arc Lab project, the album is structured as a musical
reinterpretation of the sonnet form in which field recordings, organic
instrumentation, radio noise, candid male vocals and snippets of old
public domain recordings meet with the FM synthesis, female vocals
and signature beatwork that made previous Arc Lab efforts so special.
Thematic reference points include the Russian space program, relativity,
female serial killers, and being separated from a soulmate. This diverse
collection of influences gives the album a more personal feel than
previous efforts as there are now human stories attached to Fischer's
Arc Lab scheme. Genre specific sign-posts or "this-meets-that"
descriptors are really of little use in describing "The Goodbye
Radio" as Fischer has now taken Arc Lab to places where the synthetic
only aid him in the preservation of great music and ideas. But, as
the title may allude to, this may be Fischer's final offering. Let's
hope not. An artist capable of such alchemy would be a significant
loss for all of us. Let's hope the Arc Lab radio stays on and at its
full volume.

On Ne Distinguait Plus Les Tetes (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 29TH)
PS, FRANCE Arca is a French project initiated by Joan Cambon and Sylvain
Chauveau at the beginning of the year 2000. Arca is inspired by music,
cinema, literature, photographs, every day life sounds. Arca uses
"warm" electronic sounds, mixed with organic instruments,
rainy guitars and Sylvain's voice (since the third album) to draw
melancholic landscapes not so far from David Sylvian masterpieces.
Most of the songs are recorded and mixed at home by Joan Cambon. Sylvain
Chauveau made five solo albums: instrumental music based on sweet
harmonies of piano and strings. The latest one is "Down to the
bone", a record of Depeche Mode covers. He was also part of the
former projects Micro:mega and Watermelon Club.

Autumns, The
Fake Noise from a Box of Toys (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 15TH)
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Previous albums like In the Russet Gold
of This Vain Hour were full of shimmering, slowly unfolding dream
pop soundscapes directly influenced by the likes of My Bloody Valentine
and the Cocteau Twins, whose Simon Raymonde signed the Los Angeles
band to his Bella Union label some time back. There are intermittent
flashes of that sound on Fake Noise from a Box of Toys (notably on
"The Midnight Knock" and "The Beautiful Boot"),
but this is a far more immediate album overall. Points of comparison
this time aren't the wall-of-effects-pedals wash that Robin Guthrie
or Kevin Shields specialized in, but the self-consciously epic likes
of Simple Minds, U2, Radiohead, or even Coldplay: singer Matthew Kelly
tends to favor the highest end of his range à la Chris Martin
or Thom Yorke. Anthemic singalong choruses, catchy guitar riffs, and
layered harmonies -- things the Autumns never had much truck with
on their earlier albums -- are the focus of songs like "Boys,"
"Glass Jaw," and "Clem," any of which could conceivably
be mainstream alt-rock radio hits. That may sound like the Autumns
have abandoned themselves to the wider pop marketplace, but what's
most impressive about Fake Noise from a Box of Toys is that the group
maintains enough of their own musical personality on songs like the
swirling closer "Oh My Heart" and the dramatic high point
"Killer in Drag" that the more accessible songs sound like
evolution, not sellout."

Bailiff, Jessica & Annelies Monsere
Untitled EP (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 15TH)
PS, BELGIUM Numbered limited edition of 310 in an LP like sleeve.
Annelies Monseré (Belgium/Bluesanct records) and Jessica Bailiff
(US/Kranky) met back in 2002, during Jessica's first European tour.
They've been frequently doing shows together since 2005. They've often
joined each other on stage, but recording together didn't happen until
they did a duo-tour in October 2007. On this occasion, they've totally
reworked two rare tracks of Jessica, and two yet unreleased songs
by Annelies. Although it's just the two of them, this ep has a very
built-up sound, which is reminiscent of Jessica's earliest output
and Annelies' most recent live shows. Vocals, guitars and cello- and
keyboard drones get a very prominent role on these recordings, which
were made entirely in the analog domain. The ep is limited to 310,
and comes in a mini-lp jacket. All copies are hand-numbered and have
hand-written liner notes by Annelies.
