Heaton, Angie & The Gentle Tamers "The Rumor Mill" CD (ON SALE) $9.00 (Spur)
The Rumor Mill’ is the new album by Illinois songstress and Parasol Retail Queen Angie Heaton, former member of The Tractor Kings, Corndolly and Liquorette. On this, Angie’s 4th album, she’s joined by a country band, The Gentle Tamers, including veteran Nashville session player, Bobby Watson, on guitar, banjo and pedal steel. This album take Angie's songs and sounds from the rock club to the barn dance, with her trademark vocal phrasing falling comfortably behind the beat like Willie Nelson, and a voice that brings to mind Neko Case, Lucinda Williams, and Kasey Chambers. In ‘The Rumor Mill’, Angie gives us 10 more songs about crushes, death, and being crushed to death; including a Tex-Mex-ed version of the Trembling Blue Stars’ classic “Sometimes I Still Feel The Bruise”
. Check out the release page for more info and sound samples.

1990s, The
Cookies
PS, US Much-hyped debut album from Scottish act featuring former Yummy Fur folk. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "There are a few reference points for the 1990s debut album that you need to forget right away. It doesn't matter that Bernard Butler produced, or that two of the band's members were in a band with the drummer from Franz Ferdinand. It does matter that the band in question was Yummy Fur because if you were a fan of their off-kilter and jagged brand of post-punky pop, you'll like Cookies. Of course that covers a couple hundred people at best, so let's say if you're a fan of off-kilter, spunky and often laugh-out-loud hilarious post-punk influenced pop that ropes in the best elements of Art Brut, the Libertines, Comet Gain and the B-52's, then there's a good chance you'll fall for the 1990s in a big way..."

Anemones
Come Down Like A Cloud
PS, US Grounded and propelled by the boom and tick of a lazy yet indefatigable old-school drum machine, albeit augmented by occasional percussive crash, rattle and stick of a genuinely human kind, ANEMONES are all deep throb, jangled buzz, ambient drone, shiftless mumbling and, perhaps most importantly, rolling waves of reverberation so pronounced and significant as to be structurally necessary. Collected and combined, these elements make a warm, oceanic, somewhat totalizing music that operates inwardly, directed towards the uniquely fertile, semi-liquid quasi-agriculture of the mind. Activated this way, mind as such is here suspended, ala Descartes, as a kind epiphenomenal hazy feeling, a ghost between the ears. Both in and out of the body, this half-consciousness invokes a persistent, low-key dream-like psychedelic break in which the normal world itself becomes hypnotically elusive and mysterious, a pleasantly dislocating transformation enhanced by Anemones' minimalist, somewhat lock-groove languorousness and nonchalantly sardonic theatricality. But although often performatively 'druggy' in character, Anemones' music isn't therefore 'about drugs' in the sense of being 'about being made by means of drugs' or even 'about being made for or on behalf of drugs', as if simply copying such important stylistic and conceptual precursors as the Velvet Underground, Suicide, Spacemen 3 and the Jesus and Mary Chain. Rather, Anemones produce a kind of 'post drug' music, which here refers to a state of 'after-ness' and not prudish abstention or dumbbell reform. In fact this is a specific aesthetic strategy: after the drugs and drinks are long done and gone, sound itself remains the psychotropic trigger par excellence. Hence, altering perception, Anemones aim to turn listeners on ears first.

Appleseed Cast
End of the Ring Wars
PS, US Limited pressing of 1000 on gold vinyl. Subtlety is not a word in (AC's) musical vocabulary. Whether expressed through aggressive, post- hardcore riffs, woeful guitar interludes or frontman CHRISTOPHER CRISCI's strained, yet powerful vocals, the band's message remains crystal clear. The Kansas quartet distinguishes itself by using dynamic song structures, hurricane-force rhythms & ultra-vivid lyrics to paint bold portraits of Crisci's pain. (M Tye Comer, CMJ)

Arbors, The
Symphonies For Susan
PS, UK The Arbors are the last great 'lost' vocal harmony act of the 1960s. Formed by two sets of brothers at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1965 (and you thought the MC5 were the first cool Ann Arbor act!), the quartet were signed to Columbia's Date imprint and scored their first hit with "A Symphony For Susan" in 1966. Indeed, it's the symphonic nature of many of their recordings that singled The Arbors out as being that little bit different from their 'cooler' peers. Then in 1969 the group semi-re-invented themselves with their third LP which spawned further hits in their mind-blowing, Djbaiting versions of The Box Tops' "The Letter" and Blood, Sweat & Tears' "I Can't Quit Her". The album also featured stunning readings of Beatles, Dylan, Doors and Simon & Garfunkel tunes and should now be regarded as a bona fide soft pop classic. Shifting once again, in the early '70s the band moved away from pop and into the lucrative world of advertising jingles where they forged a 30-odd year career cutting ads for the likes of McDonalds, Texaco, Green Giant and United Airlines. Rev-Ola is proud to present Symphonies For Susan, the first definitive retrospective of this largely overlooked and hugely talented band, featuring tracks from all three of their albums, many of which appear on CD for the first time.

Armour, Douglas
Prince of Wands/Away
PS, US Hailing from Los Angeles, California, DOUGLAS ARMOUR is our first proper signing to reside outside of New York City. He is a prolific songwriter and for this 7-inch Douglas provided us with two tracks, "Prince of Wands" and "Away." "Prince of Wands" first left an impression on us, and an indelible one at that, when associates of the label began DJing the track. It is a damn near perfect pop song that has had people jumping up to the dance floor upon first hearing.. Moving in a different direction with the kind of indie pop reverie that hasn't been heard for a long time.

Art In Manila
Set The Woods On Fire
PS, US After Azure Ray disbanded, member Orenda Fink put her energies into a solo record in 2005, called "Invisible Ones". Upon touring in support of that album with various revolving band members, she chose the cream of the crop and formed a new group called Art Belle, then changed it to Art In Manila (a nod to radio host Art Bell's exodus to the Phillipines). On this release, the band flirts playfully with genre wanderlust without ever abandoning cohesion. Moody slow-burners follow four-to-the-floor rockers that butt up against serene ballads. A powerful debut.

Ash
Intergalactic Sonic 7"s [expanded singles collection]
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "While the last two LPs have been pretty damn great, Ash has often seemed like a punky 2000s version of a '60s pop group, where each song takes over your radio for weeks. One sugar-rush melody melts into another wall-of-guitar burner with Tim Wheeler's "infectious" happy-go-lucky vocals, and you wonder why they never had a singles LP collection before this! Really, if Northern Ireland-bred and London-based Ash is like a lesser cross between the Buzzcocks' big power and their Ulster forebears the Undertones' "chocolate and girls" sunny disposition, then who put out better singles LPs way back when than those two bands? ...Anyone still undecided or unenlightened about this delightful quartet is well served by this consistent 19-song, big-hook collection... And if all that isn't enough, there's a bonus disc of 22 B-sides going back a decade, including some highly unusual picks for covers. This serves the fans and newcomers equally..." (Jack Rabid)

Association, The
Waterbeds In Trinidad
PS, UK Hey, everybody loves The Association! "Along Comes Mary", "Windy", "Never My Love", "Cherish". Their lush harmonic pop provided an alternative soundtrack to the late '60s and their string of nine Warner Brothers albums between 1966 and 1971 represent a body of work unsurpassed by their peers. It might be surprising to discover, therefore, that as late as 1972 they were still making top quality music, albeit for a new label, Columbia. Their version of "Darling Be Home Soon" may have failed to crack the US charts after a run of 12 hit singles but it's probably the best Lovin' Spoonful cover of them all (and that's saying something!). The accompanying album, Waterbeds In Trinidad, was the last long-player cut by the original group and has an undeniable elegiac quality to it. They tackle John Stewart's "Little Road And A Stone To Roll" and Goffin & King's "Snow Queen" alongside the usual array of original compositions, mostly composed by returning prodigal son and founder member Jules Alexander. An overlooked jewel in the Association's crown, it's about time this album was recognized by a wider audience overlooked gem from these archetypal Californian soft pop legends!

Bat For Lashes
Fur & Gold
PS, US U.S. release with bonus track "I'm On Fire" and yes, that's a Springsteen cover! Thom Yorke's a big fan. STYLUS MAGAZINE: "Khan's music is usually quite bare and doesn't stray too far from regular song structures but is still rarely straightforward, full of unusual sounds and ambiguous meaning. There are some hints of Kate Bush and particularly Björk here, "Bat's Mouth" is most obviously like the latter, working itself up to an extended, ecstatic whoop of joy set to music. Khan's vocals share much of Björk's naïve otherworldliness throughout as well, if not quite the elastic emotional range. But looking past the inevitable female singer-songwriter comparisons, there are closer kindred spirits. Fur And Gold's galloping, commanding opener "Horse And I" is a less harsh cousin to Patrick Wolf's "The Libertine." "

Big Star
Columbia: Live at Missouri University
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "With the Posies' Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow standing in, on Stephens' recommendation, for the uninterested Hummel and the deceased Bell, the foursome run through a collection mostly drawn from #1 Record and Radio City. Chilton's in good voice throughout, the blend of sweetness and melancholia of the band's original days present and fine as ever... Everyone else gets at least one vocal turn as well, a nice way of signaling the group effort that went into the show. Stephens handles "Way Out West" and "For You," Auer sings Bell's solo single "I Am the Cosmos," while Stringfellow takes over on no less than three songs, "Back of a Car," "Daisy Glaze," and a smashing rip on "Feel." A few interesting surprises are thrown in along the way, though anyone familiar with Chilton's way around unexpected covers in performance won't be too taken off guard. T. Rex's "Baby Strange" gets a straightforward take, glam sass fully intact and suiting the band perfectly, while Todd Rundgren's "Slut" closes out the set with a final appropriate blast... Blumm, F.S.
Meets Luca Fadda
PS, GERMANY For this record FS Blumm has written some of his most light-hearted tunes, accompanied by NY trumpeter Luca Fadda. Wonderful guitar and double bass lines are accompanied with processed toy instruments and found objects. The new dimension of this album is the collaboration with Luca Fadda who places digitally processed trumpets on top of Blumm's material. These improvised elements add a new live feeling to F.S. Blumm's music and creates a less melancholic mood than previous records released on labels like Morr, Staubgold and Plop. There are two 15 minute pieces on this album: one is `Ricke and Dina`, the other is `Giorgi and Lucy´. `Giorgi and Lucy´ was inspired by the last piece of a live set at the `epistrophy´ in New York on December 1st 2006 where Luca Fadda and F.S.Blumm met on stage. ‚Ricke and Dina' is based on a performance done in front of a childrens-audience during the presentation of a Peruvian fair trade collection of children`s wear at the belleville-store in Berlin on the afternoon of Oct. 1st 2005. This 3 hour live set has been carefully recorded by Lupo.

Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John
PS, US After helping to define power pop with The Nerves and The Plimsouls, Peter Case has released several solo albums. Peter Case is back with Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John, his most raw, direct work in nearly a decade. This album of politically-fueled and personally-visionary songs about now finds America's golden troubadour in his finest form, laying down intricate and driving finger-style guitar with his uniquely delivered dusty road-poetry. Sleepy John is yet another volume in the career of one of the most storied singer/songwriters of his generation.

Christy & Emily
Gueen's Head
PS, US Take a crafty pop music guitarist who knows how to come up with hooks and have them team up with a trained avant-garde classical musician and you get the Velvet Underground. Move that same combo from the Lower East Side across the river to northwest Brooklyn and tack on 40 years and you get CHRISTY & EMILY. This duo present their version of this mixture of elements with their debut CD "Gueen's Head." An octet of pieces that explore modern classical techniques grafted with pop songs. This alchemy produces a string of highly catchy ascetic tunes combined with undercurrents of discordance and dissonance. Add to this lyrics that take from the history of pop and modernist mid-20th Century poetry.

Connors, Loren
The Hymn of the North Star
PS, US Even before his 1978 debut guitarist LOREN CONNORS has been continually redefining the American blues and folk guitar. "The Hymn of the North Star," a 180 GRAM 500 EDITION LP, is the first full-length vinyl release solely under Connors' name since 1990. Though in the years since he has recorded over two dozen solo and collaborative albums with Jim O'Rourke, John Fahey, Alan Licht, Christina Carter, Jandek, Suzanne Langille, Thurston Moore, Keiji Haino, Darin Gray, and others. Connors creates a tapestry of transparent and haunting melodies that transform the Delta blues into a ghost-like apparition that never settles as it pours from the soul. These six pieces show Connors contemporary elegiac style at its peak of romantic minimalism. Self recorded in his Brooklyn apartment "The Hymn of the North Star" is saturated with subtle details and the barely there multi-tracks of guitar and bass floating in the background. Guitarist ALAN LICHT appears on one equally opaque piece recorded in Glasgow, Scotland.

Cope, Julian
You Gotta Problem With Me
PS, UK Julian Cope's new album YOU GOTTA PROBLEM WITH ME (no question mark) is another protest album in the tradition of his previous releases PEGGY SUICIDE, JEHOVAHKILL, AUTOGEDDON, CITIZEN CAIN'D and DARK ORGASM. Unlike most records by Cope's head-in-the-sand punk rock contemporaries (almost all of whom he believes to be shirking their primary rock'n'roll responsibility as cultural mouthpieces), YOU GOTTA PROBLEM WITH ME deals primarily with such currently controversial, nay taboo issues, as religion (our own and other peoples'), and the West's latest wave of xenophobia and self-doubts brought on by a combination of the war in Iraq, the so-called 9/11 bombings and the EEC's latest huge wave of migrants from former Communist countries. YOU GOTTA PROBLEM WITH ME also addresses all of Cope's other long-term gripes: corporate greed and the destruction of Mother Earth, misogyny and homophobia, and our apparent inability to address such essential matters due to cultural ignorance and the glaring faults in our education system. Yes, Lenny Bruce and Bill Hicks are dead, but Cope's still pissed off enough to fly the flag for all three! However, while the songs of YOU GOTTA PROBLEM WITH ME are even more lyrically hard-hitting than those on DARK ORGASM, musically this new record ploughs a far more traditional Copean furrow, returning the listener to insidiously melodic post-punk songs in the JEHOVAHKILL style, many sparsely orchestrated with Mellotron, wah-wah guitars, orchestral percussion and even lush harmonies. Released on double-CD and 12" vinyl gatefold sleeve LP, the 13 songs are split into two sections, and are accompanied by a 16-page booklet of insights, hard-hitting information, and a very epic poem: all designed to shake us from our post-everything stasis.

PS, US Essentially a special one-off live set. He's concocted a work of such stunning intricacy, verve & substance that it will surely be amongst the favorites when this year's highlights are assessed. What is so memorable about this collection of tracks is the way it strikes the perfect balance between abstract experimentation & full-on techno nirvana w/ out ever breaking stride or losing focus. There's nothing brash or over-blown here, all the real action is nestled between the beats, enticing yet unreachable, while the grooves he concocts are all so earthy & raw that the kick drum functions as an alternative rather than a necessity.

Fleeting Joys, The
Despondent Transponder
PS, US Repress. Flavors of My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver, The Cocteau Twins and Sonic Youth are there, but don't fully explain this shimmering anomaly. Their debut album Despondent Transponder was written, performed, recorded and mixed by the band. Brilliant Californian drummer Matt McCord lends his skills to the project. After hearing Despondent Transponder, legendary Swervedriver drummer, Jez, has pegged the duo for collaboration on their next release. While appreciating the comparisons to My Bloody Valentine, it has never been the goal of Fleeting Joys to imitate what they admire. "It is merely a starting point to expand from, experiment with, and go from there. We simply love the experience of being drenched in crashing waves of beautifully distorted chords!" It's from this love that the song-crafting of despondent transponder answers the pop vs. noise riddle with catchy, at times - even happy - melodies and crashing instrumentals that rip through like a cyclone tearing up a trailerpark. "Of recent things to cross this desk, Fleeting Joys is a real delight. The epiphanic Spectorian fog works best on "The Breakup," which plays Rorika's gossamer vocals and symphonic synth lines against John's My Bloody Valentine-style guitar sturm und drang over a stellar melody. - Jackson Griffith, Sacramento News & Review

Year of the Pig is an 18 minute 34 second long prog-punk masterpiece featuring lush piano and organ arrangements by Max Danger (The Deadly Snakes) and guest vocals by Toronto's Jennifer Castle. Year of the Pig starts with gentle guitar and soothing organ before heading into darker territory with gruff male vocals offset by Castle's angelic singing and a meandering bass line. It's not until a full 7 and a half minutes in that the track explodes into a keith moon-esque drum workout, which is followed by a one note neu trick that builds up to a thrash attack. It's 'The Wall' as written and recorded by Poison Idea.

AMG: " Tom Waits, the Pogues, the Sex Pistols, a hundred surf bands, the Kingsmen, the Troggs, the Stranglers, and a half-dozen drunk Irish poets -- Gallon Drunk have elements of all the above, with the result that the sound veers from repulsive to crazily attractive in a very primitive way... This is wild-eyed primitive rock & roll in no uncertain terms... There aren't too many bands as seriously deranged as this one."

Gandalf
S-T
PS, US With spellbinding, atmospheric songs which spin from soft dreamscapes into blistering fuzz guitar breaks, Gandalf casts a powerful spell. Led by singer/guitarist Peter Sando, the group was signed by Lovin' Spoonful producers Charlie Koppelman and Don Rubin and conjured their sole, self-titled album for Capitol in late 1967. One of the rarest major label psychedelic releases, Gandalf features swirls of Hammond B3 organ, caressing vibraphone runs and electric sitar on Sando's originals as well as imaginative recastings of songs by Tim Hardin, Gary Bonner/Alan Gordon, and Eden Ahbez. First-ever domestic compact disc reissue! Released 2002.

Gandalf
Gandalf II
PS, US The exotic, mindbending sounds of Gandalf have long been one of the great lost treasures of the first psychedelic era. Featuring the breathy vocals and lysergic guitar of Peter Sando, the band's only album, a delight from start to finish, has generated a fervent demand for more of the same. Gandalf 2, is a return trip to the band's garden of earthly delights. A thorough search of Sando's tape vault revealed a fabulous stash of spellbinding demos and acetates, unheard for decades! Grapefruit
Around The BBC
PS, UK Around the BBC collects all of the known radio session recordings that Grapefruit made for the BBC in 1968 and 1969. These BBC radio session recordings - in which several songs were generally cut in a single four-hour session with minimal overdubbing - provide a previously of unheard side of Grapefruit. Most of the 1968 studio recordings that were issued by RCA and Stateside Records can be found on Grapefruit's "Around Grapefruit" LP that was issued in early 1969. But due to some unsympathetic remixing and overdubbing by producer Terry Melcher during the compilation of the album, the versions found on "Around Grapefruit" were not representative of the group's true sound. Around the BBC lets you hear Grapefruit as nature intended, offering stripped down, high-energy versions of the singles Dear Delilah, Elevator, C'Mon Marianne, Round Going Round and more. But best of all, Around the BBC contains several tracks that were never officially recorded or commercially issued by Grapefruit. Highlights include the George Alexander compositions Somebody's Turning On the People, Breaking Up A Dream and Trying to Make It To Monday, all prime early 1968 Grapefruit, which could have easily found a home on the "Around Grapefruit" LP. RPM's Grapefruit Around the BBC provides an alternative look at a group that had so much more to offer than simply being known as 'the band formed and backed by the Beatles'.

Heaton, Angie & The Gentle Tamers
The Rumor Mill (ON SALE)
PS, US 'The Rumor Mill' is the new album by Illinois songstress and Parasol Retail Queen Angie Heaton, former member of The Tractor Kings, Corndolly and Liquorette. On this, Angie's 4th album, she's joined by a country band, The Gentle Tamers, including veteran Nashville session player, Bobby Watson, on guitar, banjo and pedal steel. This album take Angie's songs and sounds from the rock club to the barn dance, with her trademark vocal phrasing falling comfortably behind the beat like Willie Nelson, and a voice that brings to mind Neko Case, Lucinda Williams, and Kasey Chambers. In 'The Rumor Mill', Angie gives us 10 more songs about crushes, death, and being crushed to death; including a Tex-Mex-ed version of the Trembling Blue Stars' classic "Sometimes I Still Feel The Bruise". I Cantori Moderni Di Alessandroni
The Modern Singers
PS, UK Though Ennio Morricone revolutionized the art of movie soundtracks during the golden age of Italian cinema, for most people his trademark sound is the combination of haunting whistling, wordless choirs and plangent, Duane Eddy-style guitar that formed part of the aural landscape of Sergio Leone¹s so called spaghetti westerns. And it is impossible to imagine these works existing in all their atmospheric, multi-textured splendor without the extraordinary talents of Alessandro Alessandroni and his remarkable choir I Cantori Moderni. During the sixties, Cantori established a reputation for almost infinite versatility, regardless of the demands made by some of Italy's most prestigious film composers and this set showcases their fantastic ability.

Jennifer Gentle
New Astronomy
PS, ITALY This album is dedicated to Giovanni Paneroni, amateur astronomer and misunderstood genius (earth flat, sun small, etc). "A New Astronomy" is probably the most eccentric and out-there JG release to date, the imaginary soundtrack for some of their most bizarre, vivid dreams - obviously interspersed by the occasional nightmare. It's made by grainy, hallucinated musical scores trying to depict the beautiful, the scary, the annoying and the simply absurd inhabiting dreams. It runs the gamut from ghostly ambient drones to brain-damaged acoustic sketches, covering everything in between - furious guitar freak-outs and a hommage to British 60's producer Joe Meek included. (Note: this is the official release of the ultra rare cd-r released by Sub Pop in 2005 in a 100 copies limited edition).

Jesu/Eluvium
Split
PS, US ***LIMITED***For the second installment in the collaborative series of split albums between TEMPORARY RESIDENCE LTD. and HYDRA HEAD RECORDS, we find a match made in heaven with the ethereal, grandiose dirge-pop of JESU splitting sides with stately, deserted majesty of ELUVIUM. Already fans of each other's music, the two artists sought to compliment each other and in the process stretched their individual sounds to their outermost limits. Jesu shoots for the moon with a trio of fuzzed-out tunes that owes more to first-wave British shoegaze groups like SWERVEDRIVER and RIDE than Broadrick's own roots in GODFLESH and NAPALM DEATH. It's a beautiful and brilliant evolution in Jesu's already accomplished career. Eluvium aims for the heart of the sun with his magnum opus, a three-part collaboration with JEREMY DEVINE that stretches Eluvium's contemplative drones to a staggering twenty-one minutes, in which time the song transforms from a lonely rattle to a seismic, swirling storm of sound that grinds the piece to haunting quiet. As with all records in this series, this is Strictly Limited To 4,000 Copies - 2,000 Hydra Head versions and 2,000 Temporary Residence Ltd. versions. The music and the artwork is the same on all copies, but the vinyl colors, label colors, and outer sticker colors will vary. We live to comfort you with our music, and confound you with our methods.

He soon came back as Júpiter Maçã, his current name, with which he develops his personal version of a 60's inspired psychedelic sound in cult albums that don't cross the Brazilian borders, but do find an echo among an elite who whisper his name in each other's ears: among his following we find Tom Zé, Caetano Veloso, Arnaldo Baptista, Rita Lee, Sean Lennon, Tim
Gane, Sean O'Hagan or Dean Wareham.

Lee, Peggy
Moon Flowers
PS, UK The very first cool, blonde, sexy and happening female singer-songwriter, opening the door for everyone from Jackie De Shannon to Gwen Stefani, it's Miss Peggy Lee! Originally the featured vocalist in the Benny Goodman Big Band in the 1940s, the lovely Miss Lee launched a series of solo hits in 1942 beginning with her first # 1, 'Somebody Else Is Taking My Place', followed by 1943's 'Why Don't You Do Right?' which sold over a million copies and secured her fame! Many more hits followed for the next umpteen years, of which many were self-penned. Her many songwriting collaborators, in addition to husband/guitarist Dave Barbour, included such notable as Laurindo Almeida, Harold Arlen, Sonny Burke, Cy Coleman, Duke Ellington, Dick Hazard, Quincy Jones, Marian McPartland, Lalo Schifrin, Hubie Wheeler, and Victor Young, to name just a few! On this collection we focus on her hits, of the 1940s and 1950s. The sexy, bluesy and assured tones of the woman who brought you such heart-stopping moments as 'Fever' and 'Is That All There Is?'

Luminous Orange
Sakura Swirl
PS, US The Yokohama-based band Luminous Orange has been around since 1992, and their new album Sakura Swirl is a perfect showcase of the expertise and talent accrued over the last 15 years. Formed and fronted by female auteur Rie Takeuchi, LO clearly take great inspiration from the first wave of UK shoegaze as well as the guitar pop and electronic music from Cornelius and his contemporaries in the Shibuya-kei movement. (In fact, Cornelius' Trattoria label released some of Luminous Orange's first material right before it dissolved in 2002.) But Luminous Orange are not stuck in recreating the past: they have radically altered their genetic material to form a brand-new sound. At points, the new album Sakura Swirl sounds like a respectful tribute to My Bloody Valentine: airy vocals float above heavily-layered wall-of-sound guitars drenched in a bog of resonant reverb.

PS, US Limited! The four CDs that are included in the boxset are from four distinct recording sessions that MAGNOLIA ELECTRIC CO. recorded following the release of their debut studio album "What Comes After The Blues." The session known as "Sun Sessions" was recorded at the legendary SUN STUDIOS in Memphis, Tennessee. The session known as "Black Ram" was recorded by DAVID LOWERY at his SOUND OF MUSIC studios in Richmond, Virginia and features an entirely different cast of characters including Lowery, RICK ALVERSON, ANDREW BIRD, MOLLY BLACKBIRD, MIGUEL URBIZTONDO and ALAN WEATHERHEAD. The session known as "Shohola" was recorded by JASON MOLINA alone, with a guitar and microphone. "The Road Becomes What You Leave" is a documentary film produced by TODD CHANDLER and TIM SUTTON. Michael Yonkers Band
Grimwood
PS, US When considering "Grimwood", one must give thought to the Michael Yonkers Band's "Microminiature Love". Originally recorded in 1968, it languished until it was released in 2002 (and later re-issued as a Sub Pop CD). Called the greatest psych record of the 60s by more than a few, it's no stretch to say that had it materialized, it would've altered the lay of the land. But the deal fell apart and the band split, which led to Yonkers retreating and recording "Grimwood". This is intensely private music. Collectors have had a run on it for some time and it's been impossible to affordably attain, until now. Here it is, re-mastered, digitized, and priced for the people.

Mirah And Spectratone International
Share This Place: Stories and Observations
PS, US In "Share This Place: Stories and Observations," LORI GOLDSTON and KYLE HANSON of BLACK CAT ORCHESTRA acclaim team up with K RECORDS recording artist MIRAH to deliver a sweeping song cycle inspired by the tragic and triumphant lives of insects. Inspired in part by influential French scientist/poet J.HENRI FABRÉ, Mirah's lyrics smartly humanize the trials and pleasures of the insect world, touching on themes of villainy, seduction, self-sacrifice and love. Shining a light on the epic complexity of the insect world, the songs imply an inescapable comparison with our own. A concept album of sorts, "Share This Place" is a score written by GOLDSTON, HANSON and Mirah for a suite of twelve stop-motion animated short films by BRITTA JOHNSON. One of the films, "Credo Cigalia," is included on the album, along with an illustrated lyric booklet.

Nadler, Marissa
Song 3: Bird on the Water
PS, US A dark and atmospheric record and Nadler's most personal to date. Thematically she relates to characters living on the fringes of society. The songs revolve around the demise of a love relationship as well as eulogies and dirges. It was inevitable that Marissa would rise from the underground to reach a wider audience someday. Her music is dreamy and spectral: an amalgam of traditional folk, paisley underground, shoegaze, and dream pop. Almost all of the songs are very sad - about broken hearts, death, or simple burdens. Her voice is what most people immediately respond to, with the writing and playing yielding a slow burn subtlety. Excelling at a Fahey-esque finger-picking technique, she plays homage to some of the great early American blues players. The Basho like 12 string guitar movements are also quite lovely. MOJO:

Greatest Living Englishman [reissue]
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "As it was produced by XTC's Andy Partridge (who also plays most of the drums), this was Newell's first project to receive any semblance of mainstream media attention in the U.S. What he was presenting, however, differed little in essence from what he'd been doing since Cleaners From Venus started in the early '80s: tuneful pop with heart and clever lyrics that could be joyfully optimistic, whimsically satirical, or dourly cynical...such as "Home Counties Boy" and the very Kinks-like "A Street Called Prospect" and "Christmas in Suburbia." ...Playing, as always, like a snapshot of English life, it's the most suitable introduction to Newell's work..."

Okkervil River

PS, US OKKERVIL RIVER'S "Black Sheep Boy" was one of the most acclaimed releases of 2005. Kelefa Sanneh wrote in the New York Times that "Will Sheff, leader of the Austin indie-rock band Okkervil River, writes like a novelist." With their newest release, "The Stage Names," Okkervil River dynamite the walls of "Black Sheep Boy's" gothic, moss-walled castle from the inside to let in the glaring sun. Where "Black Sheep Boy" presented a fairytale of dark babbling streams and high distant towers, "The Stage Names" takes place in an unmistakably modern world, where snowy televisions blast into cheap hotels the spectral images of soap stars endlessly betraying each other, where losers in late-night bars languish to the beat of their favorite songs, where broken-down actresses place their final cell calls from lonely mansions high in the hills. Riddled with characters real and fake, with true-life biography and brazenly fabricated autobiography, with the relics of high culture and the crumpled-up trash of low culture, "The Stage Names" is a cinemascopic take on the meaning of entertainment. And, crucially, it entertains. Reverberant with echoes of Motown snap and girl-group pop, redolent with ripe whiffs of dirty rock 'n' roll, shining with the shimmy of BO DIDDLEY, with the shimmer of the VELVETS, with the swagger of the FACES, and with a glittery sprinkling of cheap perfume over the top of it all to disguise the stink, "The Stage Names" is a relentlessly-paced and ruthlessly thrilling journey.

This fuses weary w/ vicious, punk w/ hillbilly, the farmer in the city w/ the electro-magnetic aura of tape hiss &amp crackle. Recorded in the manic confines of Vancouver's Profile Studios amid the plume of smoke, sweat & heavy Pacific laced air.

Wind & the Swell
PS, US The songs showcase the paradox between the band's ferocity & its tenderness. The male/female vocal counterpoint & the urgent rushes of instrumentation mid-song meet w/ the gentle strum of acoustic guitars & wistful imagery of the sea. These songs present music as a document of experience, shot through w/ pathos, imagination, enthusiasm & warmth.

Prayers
God Save The Prayers
PS, US Comes out swinging like 1st wave NYC punk w/Motown vibe. Guitars, harmonies, drums & bass surge forward like a big oily rouge wave, backing up lyrics about trouble & horsin' around in the grand theater of absurd. Next a sinister track full of damaged characters, skeezy fashion & denial. Then a girl group pop song done by boys. An ode to gossipy shit talking w/ reverby 50s guitars. Ending w/a greaser rumble w/ vertical slashes of guitar & backing vocals that are pure doo wop.

Rouse, Josh
Country Mouse City House
PS, US New album. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Beginning with 2003's 1972, he's been cranking out sweet and sophisticated albums influenced by his love of soft rock and filled with lyrical gems, smooth performances and his wonderfully rich and intimate vocals, and Country Mouse City House is no different. Again recorded in his new home country of Spain, this time out Rouse handles the production himself and proves that he learned quite a bit from his former partner Brad Jones as the album is just as lushly layered and as filled with aural candy (like the funky clavinet on "Hollywood Bass Player" or the horns that bolster "God, Please Let Me Go Back") as on the last three albums. The songs on Country are a nice mix of the last three albums, too; some have the lazy, relaxed feel of Subtitulo ("Snowy Night," "Pilgrim"), some have the indie pop glow of Nashville ("God, Please Let Me Go Back," "Sweetie") some have the soft rock groove of 1972 "(Italian Dry Ice," "Hollywood Bass Player"). Whatever it is, the sound they all have in common is Rouse's first-rate songcraft, and there are few modern singer/songwriters who can approach him."

Spokane
Little Hours (LP/CD)
PS, US "Little Hours" is the patient sheen of stillness after a short, violent burst of intention. The lingering, resonant decay of a nail being hammered into wood. A piano laden marriage of small hopes and quiet violence. In Church Hill, a borough of Richmond, Virginia, there is a small yellow cottage. Next to the cottage is an austere replica of a mid-nineteenth century, white Federal period house. The members of SPOKANE hand built the structure over the course of 2006 while recording and revising their first new album in four years, "Little Hours." The record is both a document of and an aural parallel to that difficult, meticulous process. In the emotional vein of folk singer Jackson C. Frank with the textural emaciation of composers Zbigniew Preisner and Morton Feldman, the songs themselves are hinged on concepts of failure and stillborn ideas, on the conflicted process of building or birthing a cerebral image into the world. There are the echoes of insistent cats running through the skeletal frame of the house, pillaged, infant birds in their mouths, left half-dead at the foot of the hole where the stair would be. "Little Hours" is packaged in A VINYL SLEEVE WITH BOTH RECORD AND CD INSIDE, 50 of which are handmade and numbered. It features the core ensemble of 2003's "Measurement," which MOJO magazine called "a uniquely enthralling treasure", along with contributions from members of Brooklyn's orchestral, minimalist band GREGOR SAMSA.

Stewart, John
California Bloodlines
PS, UK Cult artist John Stewart first came too the attention of the public when his folk group The Cumberland Three issued their pair of acclaimed concept albums featuring songs of the American Civil War. Shortly afterward in 1961, he joined their mentors the Kingston trio leading them through changes in style and continued hit singles and albums in the volatile period 1961-67. As the Trio slowly ran down operations, as John wrote songs for outside acts such as "Daydream Believer" by The Monkees, which of course was, a worldwide smash hit in 1967! John then made the eccentric country-psych "Signals Through The Glass" with his wife Buffy Ford, though even John himself joked that foreign language albums outsold them! Immediately afterward, he would go to Nashville, where he would join Nik Venet, Vince Martin, Fred Neil, and the Nashville master musicians who made "Blonde On Blonde", "Nashville Skyline", Vince Martin's amazing first solo album and Bergen White's "For Women Only". This is where John cut his first real solo album, "California Bloodlines" and where his real cult begins, as music loving cliques from Rolling Stone to Zig Zag to Omaha Rainbow (a Brit magazine named after John's song) raved over the album!

Tarentel
Ghetto Beats on the Surface of the Sun
PS, US Immediately following the release of their acclaimed 2004 album, "We Move Through Weather," TARENTEL built on their forward momentum by recording another several hours worth of material, its fate to be determined at a later date. Tarentel don't follow up their albums so much as follow through them. To that end, "Ghetto Beats On The Surface Of The Sun" is more of an exploded view of the world the band has built and un-built for over a decade, each track acting as a map to an increasingly cosmic landscape. Originally released as a limited edition series of vinyl albums, "Ghetto Beats" is collected here onto two CDs - a full two and a half hours of music. It is a sun-baked cluster of ragged rhythms, splintered sound and scorched shimmer. The production is a caustic mix of hi- and lo-fi, creating a strange sense of timelessness, like discovering a black and white photograph of the future. AVAILABLE IN A NUMBERED, LIMITED EDITION QUADRUPLE GATEFOLD JACKET, "Ghetto Beats On The Surface Of The Sun" is a widescreen projection of unspeakable charm and unlikely beauty.

Trent, Jackie
The Magic of Jackie Trent
PS, UK Alongside Scott Walker and Dusty Springfield, Jackie Trent was one of the most distinctive pop voices of the sixties. With Tony Hatch, she co-wrote hits for Walker and Petula Clark and enjoyed major success of her own when 'Where Are You Now?' ousted the Beatles' 'Ticket To Ride' from the number one spot in the spring of 1965. Complimented by some memorable Hatch arrangements, the restored Magic of Jackie Trent and the superb material with which it has been augmented here are testament to her brilliant artistry.

PS, US New to the WYR? family, Tyvek-- Kevin (guitar/vox), Heath (guitar),Larry (bass/the law), and Matt (drums)-- hail from Detroit, MI; you can probably hear it in the music. Tyvek's songs are a product of trying to understand their city: the empty spaces, poisoned ground, burnt-out building shells. In spite of all that, Tyvek love the land, the city, the infrastructure, and the sound... the sound of turning it up and then having your friends turn it up too, until you're all wired into some cheap frequencies and feeling some real buzz in the air.

Woelv
Le Niveau de la Mer
PS, US "Le Niveau de la Mer" and "Bete a Cheval" are two songs inspired by American imperialism, but that could also speak of many different places around the world. "Le Niveau de la Mer" was written shortly after the passage of Hurricane Katrina and took shape while I imagined the scene. I read somewhere that with global warming, we would be facing this kind of storm more and more often and it terrified me. It seemed to me as though people here preferred not having to change anything about their lifestyles, even though we have no other option left. "Bête à Cheval" is a song that is slightly comical which tells the story of the passing of a violent scape-goat who stomps on everything along its way. Played on the drums by HEATHER DUNN (DUB NARCOTIC SOUND SYSTEM), and yelled by the voice, the effect is similar to a very small punch in the face. Both songs were recorded in the big room at DUB NARCOTIC STUDIO by CALVIN JOHNSON in Olympia in January 2006.

Yeasayer
2080/Sunrise
PS, US 2080/Sunrise is the single for the forthcoming YEASAYER full-length debut, due out the fall of 2007. Soothsayers, crystal-gazers, and time travelersŠthey have all seen the future. Spilling words of Armageddon, the apocalypse, and the second coming of Christ they speak of man's impending doom. With countries on the warpath and our decaying world growing inhabitable it is easy to succumb to the voices of these scholars. YEASAYER have also been witness to the future. "2080/Sunrise" documents their visions and experiences in the years that lie ahead. Discern what you will from the lyrics, but YEASAYER'S songs flow with posi-vibes that will make you dance and trumpet. It is optimism, it is joy. "It's a new year, I'm glad to be here, it's a fresh spring, so lets sing. In 2080 I will will surely be dead, so don't look ahead, never look ahead."
