Parasol New Arrivals • November 06, 2007

Hey folks,

Well, it’s Tuesday again but unfortunately most of us here at Parasol are nursing a gigantic sugar induced hangover from last week’s door to door bell ringin’. But the perfect remedy consists of Sigur Ros’s “Hvarf/Heim”, Levon Helm’s “Dirt Farmer” and The recent Neko Case re-issues courtesy of Anti Records.

With that said, take a look at the rest of the update at your leisure and hit us up if anything catches your eye.

Until then,

Royal/Paul

Anna Ternheim "Self-Titled" CD5 $6.25 (Decca)
Grammi Award-winning Swedish songstress' domestic debut is here, in EP teaser form (album due March 2008), highly recommended for Cat Power, Frida Hyvönen and Imogen Heap fans. Six mostly-acoustic songs include the Naked Version of her recent single “Lovers Dream”, a cover of Bowie/Iggy's "China Girl", plus an enchanting live video of her worship-worthy Broder Daniel cover, “Shoreline”, a song so good I've posted the studio version of her intimate piano version along with BD’s bombastic original on our front page. Check it out.

Producer John McEntire ups the harmonic density in their sound, creating a rich tapestry of harmelodic color that owes as much to jazz masters like Mingus & Coltrane & maverick bands like Can as it does to Fela Kuti. Arp
In Light
PS, US Arp is the most recent project of Alexis Georgopoulos, formerly of Tussle & The Alps. As an emblem of Alexis' commitment to "natural electronic music" (bridging the natural and electronic worlds),nearly all of In Light was recorded live.Very few loops were used -in fact, only one. This gesture was meant to bring back some of the rough (re:natural) edges that have been lost in so much "Electronic Music" today. In Light is a luminous album of warm, pulsing music. Like dreams or rich, saturated moments that make one lose sense of time, they are grainy snapshots, like old films of one's own experiences, elevated moments. Call it Pop Minimalism.Call it Cosmic Pop. Call it Cosmic Minimalism. Call it what you will.

Barzin
Barzin
PS, UK "Barzin's self-titled debut album is a gorgeous marriage of mood, minimalism and melancholia. Imagine Slint's quieter moments or Hayden's more gothic opuses and you'll have an idea of Barzin's approach... This is a morose masterpiece, an exercise in understatement that leaves the listener wanting more..." "... a sad beauty worthy of entry among the slow-core canon of Red House Painters, Cat Power, Low, et al". These are some of the many praises showered on the eponymous debut album of Toronto singer/songwriter Barzin, which was originally released in North America on Where Are My Records (2003), and also had a short-run release in France and Italy on the French label Ocean Music. Since 2004, it has been out of print in Europe, and will now be available for the first time worldwide. The follow-up album, 'My Life In Rooms' was released in Europe in 2006 and was similarly acclaimed, leading to a demand for the re-issue of the S/T debut. A new album is scheduled for release in 2008. "This eponymous CD boasts ripe writing skills, delicate arrangements, and exquisite production. Barzin's songs originate from the melancholic indie rock of Low, with hints of the American neofolk current...There is no weak moment on this album". Recommended (4/5) - All Music Guide.

Bear In Heaven
Red Bloom of the Boom
PS, US AMG REVIEW: "Starting with a scraggly shimmer that sounds like a cross between a dying keyboard and an alarm drone from the robot wars (whenever they'll be fought), Red Bloom of the Boom gets this much right at the start -- it's not another tunefully epic guitar production for indie rock dreamers, and for that listeners should all be duly grateful. If anything, Bear in Heaven sound enjoyably out of place, with their obvious love for whatever post-rock became in the late '90s transmuted into immediate but not dumbed-down catchiness; lead figure Jon Philpot's soft register doesn't sound like a wistful waif so much as an underrated figure like Butterfly Child's Joe Cassidy (if at times crossed with Doug Martsch's reflective dreaminess..."

Better Friends Than Lovers
Great Loves
PS, CANADA Vancouver's Better Friends Than Lovers Formed in 2005. They quickly gained fans and respect with their self released EP, touring and unpretentious DIY attitude. Great Loves is the bands first full-length album. It is a diverse album crossing various musical boundaries. The dual vocals of Eli Leary and Jeremy Pellard are impressive and the harmonies soar from start to finish. From desperate ballads to gritty dance tracks, the bands chemistry and talent shine. Bones, Mike
The Sky Behind The Sea
PS, US MIKE BONES is New Jersey-born songwriter MIKE STRALLOW, who lives and works in New York City. Of his pseudonym, Strallow offers: "Bones is a nickname a friend gave to me when I was a kid. Making records as Mike Bones removes my voice from the song, at least in my own mind and leaves a song's meaning and intention ambiguous. I don't have to show my cards." Although Bones has been writing songs for years, worked as a guitar player for The Mighty Flashlight, Damon McMahon, and Lizzie Trulie, and is a member of cult favorites Soldiers of Fortune (a band featuring members of Oneida, Home, and Oakley Hall), "The Sky Behind the Sea" marks his debut solo recording.

Brother Kite, The
Moonlit Race
PS, US Over a year in the making, The Brother Kites Moonlit Race EP has undergone several conceptual changes as time has moved on. The final product is one to cherish. Originally conceived as a single for Get On, Me - arguably the catchiest song on their masterful sophomore album Waiting For The Time To Be Right the EP stays true to form by leading off with that track. From there on, the listener is treated to five exclusive tracks. We are treated to alternate versions and mixes of two album tracks from WFTTTBR, including the title cut and Hopeless and Unsung. A never-before-released live version of Never in Years from a WERS 88.9 radio session in Boston is also included. Sandwiched in the middle of the disc are two solid non-album tracks. Unearthed/Digging in the Dirt is taken from DJ Potters creepy child-zombie short film Of All That Is Unearthed. The track Half Century appears here in hard-copy format for the first time. The track was originally recorded for the most recent Adult Swim download compilation entitled Warm and Scratchy, and saw the band sitting comfortably alongside an impressive array of indie notables such as The Rapture, TV On The Radio, The Raveonettes, Fennesz, Broken Social Scene, The Liars, Asobi Seksu, Amusement Parks on Fire, Les Savy Fav and more. In addition to the six audio tracks, the CD has enhanced content featuring three videos! The alternate version of Hopeless and Unsung gets paired with an artistically shot video. I'm Not The Only One has been a fan-favorite over the past year, having been downloaded off the band's website and YouTube more than 5,000 times. The video is beautifully and professionally shot, and appears here on an official format for the first time. The disc is wrapped up with a funny, behind-the-scenes, home-shot video by the band about the recording of the penultimate album track Get On, Me.

Buddyrevelles
Don't Quit
PS, US After almost ten years since their formation and seven years since their last full-length release, The Buddyrevelles have emerged from the shadows with a carefully-crafted album full of driving rhythms, subversive melodies, and thoughtful songs about life, death, love and the pursuit of middle-aged happiness. Don't Quit represents the refinement and subsequent augmentation of a band that has been under the radar for a bit too long. PITCHFORK: "The band sounds like a cross between Chicago post-rock, the best Galaxie 500 material, and the hope of a better future... these guys'll rock your house with just over an hour's worth of the sweetest, most hummable pop this side of perfection." Score: 9.1!

By The End Of Tonight/Tera Melos
Complex Full of Phantoms
PS, US Coming off the heels of the scarcely limited 3" CD series - and a full two years after the release of their debut album - BY THE END OF TONIGHT has finally dropped the anvil of badass on us with six new jams. In the two years since the release of their brilliant "A Tribute To Tigers", BTEOT have toured almost non-stop, playing every rock club, living room (or even barn) that would have them. Their relentlessness has paid off, as their half of this split album with good friends and like-minded power jammers TERA MELOS is far and away their most accomplished work to date. Not to be outdone, Sacramento's Tera Melos have also been on the road more than they've been home this year, touring with the likes of Fall of Troy and Horse the Band. Their frantic, absurdly complex songs are the perfect compliment to By the End of Tonight's darker, more sinister instrumental metal. Though both bands play a hyper-catchy, addictive form of spastic punk, Tera Melos brings to mind a hybrid of fellow Sacramento speed freaks Hella and Cap'n Jazz, while BTEOT draws an unfathomable arc between Blink 182 and The Jesus Lizard. The combination makes this by far the strongest release to date from either band.

Canola Tenderfoot
Winning Is For Losers
PS, UK After many years recording and gigging around the UK with other Bristol bands Viki and Owen Shirley got married, retreated to their Bristol home studio and in 2004 began work on a very special and personal project. They called it Canola (the Celtic Goddess of music) Tenderfoot (a novice). And now, three years down the line, Canola Tenderfoot's first album is complete and ready for release on Malicious Damage. With no agenda other than to make the best music they could, Canola Tenderfoot utilised electronics, ambience and real life instruments to create highly addictive beats, deep melodic grooves and tunes that haunt, heal and uplift. Viki's delicious vocals soar above this musical soundscape with delicately crafted lyrics about love, loss, hope & frustration, tales of joy, of friendships and of getting wasted. Apart from their own music, Canola Tenderfoot have worked with Jon Kennedy, Sweet Laredo and The Porcupine, while Viki has lent her charismatic vocals to artists ranging from Bristol's Beard of Meats to the legends that are Sly & Robbie.

Certain Breeds
S-T
PS, CANADA This is the debut CD by Vancouver's Certain Breeds. Recorded in July, 2007 by Colin Stewart at The Hive Recording Studio. A Perfectly strange mix of Gothic, Psychedelic and Punk the albums uneasy urgency may leave some people wondering what they've just witnessed. Jennifer Riego's haunting vocals accompanied by Leanne Chapman's sombre cello playing create a creepy vibe. Howling dogs and twisted synths add to the offbeat darkness. A great addition to Global Symphonic's already twisted roster.

Citay
Little Kingdom
PS, US Welcome to CITAY'S "Little Kingdom." It's an otherworldly place, full of psychedelic swirl, soaring harmonies and grandiose jams. "Little Kingdom" is the second album from San Francisco's Citay. It's an epic journey, and an album that sounds out of place in 2007 - a classic in the purest sense. Like Citay's 2006 self-titled debut, the '70s rock sensibility is intact; Thin Lizzy, acoustic Led Zeppelin, Big Star and the Byrds all remain touchstones. But "Little Kingdom" moves further into ambitious composition, referencing Popul Vuh, Animals-era Pink Floyd, the Fripp-Eno collaborations, and early Mike Oldfield. The twin leads are still huge, the ballads still sweet, but Citay is reaching for more on "Little Kingdom." "Little Kingdom" is lush and beautiful; a grand, epic work that harkens back to day when studio excess was encouraged and a premium was placed on composition. To borrow a line from Arthur's review of Citay's debut, "this is an album without a sell-by date, with a song for every season."

Clipd Beaks
Hoarse Lords
PS, US Influenced by hobo culture, the drugged-up hyphy sounds currently dominating Bay Area airwaves & underground "Neu San Francisco" warehouse parties where techno bangers fade into tribal noise jams, everything on Hoarse Lords is turned up to 11. Harsh & distorted, its a fitting new sound for a band that references "clipping" in their name, and feels every bit as sick & violent as a severed, bleeding beak.

Connors, Loren
As Roses Bow: Collected Airs 1992-2002
PS,US "As Roses Bow: Collected Airs 1992-2002" is a 2xCD set of Loren Connors' most melodically rich and stunning miniature compositions. Inspired by O'Carolan's airs and other Irish airs of the past these works, recorded from 1992-2002, are melded with Connors' distinctly personal adaptation of the blues. He considers these 43 pieces his complete airs. The collection is culled from 10 albums (eight of which are out of print) and one single, including his groundbreaking "Hell's Kitchen Park" (BLACK LABEL, 1993), "Moonyean" (ROAD CONE, 1994), as well as obscure titles like "St. Vincent's Newsboy Home" (ITEM RECORDINGS, 1998) and "Lullaby" (CARBON, 2001) plus four unreleased airs. Nearly the entire critically heralded "Airs" (Road Cone 1999) is remastered and included as well. A timeless collection of the most gorgeous and accessible work from one of America's most iconoclast artists. Also includes pieces from "Five Points" EP (TABLE OF THE ELEMENTS, 1994), "9th Avenue" (BLACK LABEL,1995), "Calloden Harvest" (ROAD CONE, 1997), "Evangeline" (ROAD CONE, 1998), "Standing Upright on a Curve" (SUB ROSA, 1998), and "Sails" (TABLE OF THE ELEMENTS, 2006). Cops, The
Free Electricity
PS, US AVERSION.COM REVIEW: "With a shuffled and expanded lineup, the Seattle act returns with Free Electricity a rock-minded record that owes every bit of its existence to punk's founding fathers without getting stuck in the genre. Where the band's debut, last year's Get Good or Stay Bad (Mt. Fiji) channeled the better parts of The Clash and Radio Birdman through a filter of fiery modern punk, Free Electricity pulls the band into worlds of straight-up rock'n'roll as it uses its punk foundations to rattle some danger and desperation into the formula."

Digital Dance
Treatment
PS, UK 16 tracks. The definitive anthology by cult Belgian post-punk band Digital Dance, a group often name-checked but seldom heard. One of the first and best new wave bands in Belgium, Digital Dance formed in Brussels in July 1978 by singer/guitarist Jerry WX and guitarist Stephan Barbery. The group, which also included keyboard player Jean-Marc Lederman, released their first single on Disques Vogue in late 1979. Digital dance recorded four singles - Radio-Activity, Faulty, Treatment and Three Meanings - as well as a self-titled cassette album, and another single under the name Jung. Although John Peel championed Faulty in the UK, and the band played several high profile live shows (including a residency at the Gibus Club in Paris and a support slot with Joy Division at Plan K in January 1980), Digital Dance failed to break through and split early in 1982. Various members subsequently played in groups as diverse as Fad Gadget, Marine, The Revenge, Kid Montana, Snowy Red, The Weathermen, The Names and Ink. Sadly singer Jerry died in 2000. As well as new artwork, the 70 minute CD also includes detailed sleeve notes and an assortment of period images and graphics.

Drift, The
Ceiling Sky
PS, US When "Noumena" was released, critics and audiences were polarized. It would seem that "Streets" and "Nozomi" - less than twenty minutes of music combined - had provided enough for THE DRIFT to already have expectations to live up to, whether they liked it or not. At times glacially paced, "Noumena" ventured into the darker, lonelier regions of jazz, dub, and ambient rock, where "In A Silent Way" and "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" coexist in sinister harmony. The trumpet freak-outs and Beefheart-inspired guitar stabs were fondly missed, while the increased attention paid to atmosphere was applauded. What critics and most fans didn't get to hear were the two extra tracks included only on the 2xLP vinyl edition of "Noumena" (including, ironically, the title track from the album). These two tracks sprawled to lengths and depths only alluded on their debut 12". "Ceiling Sky" collects these previously rare, vinyl-only tracks onto CD for the first time. In addition, the limited edition (rmxs) 12" released earlier this year - featuring remixes by FOUR TET and SYBARITE - is included to complete the collection. In total this is an hour's worth of enchanting, haunting music that only a handful of people have had the pleasure to hear until now. That should be just enough to get us through the wait for the next proper full-length from The Drift, due in spring 2008.

Eskiboy
The Best of Tunnel Vision
PS, UK Eskiboy aka Wiley aka Richard Cowie is one of the original founders of what is now known as "grime" music. Originating in the massive Pay As U Go Cartel, Wiley went on to start up his own crew with the Roll Deep entourage. His debut album Treddin On Thin Ice, released through XL, brought his unique "Eski beat" sound to the world and has cemented him as one of the most innovative producers ever in British electronic music. The Best of Tunnel Vision is compiled by the grime scene's number one DJ, Logan Sama and encapsulates all the best from the stream of updates from Eski's Tunnel Vision series of mixtape CD styles - made swiftly and fired out frequently beneath the radar. This is Wiley rising to clashes - a notepad for his freshest beats - freestyles and war dubs alike. Simply check the vital Eskiboy version "I'm a Sinner" to Various Production's urban classic "Hater." As craftsman, mentor, motivator - it's impossible to underestimate Wiley's influence - his chill vision mapped out with acid blips, machined rhythms - a brilliant alien terrain for an entire generation of new vocal and MC talent to shine over. Matching significant production innovation with a rapacious appetite for delivery 'pon microphone - yet managing to describe an unparalleled range of emotion - from haunting self-doubt to aggrandizing battle talk, all modern life is here.

PS, US FINAL FANTASY'S OWEN PALLETT returns triumphant after the universally acclaimed "He Poos Clouds" with a pair of tracks newly recorded in Montreal with BEIRUT'S ZACH CONDON. Both songs pre-date the Polaris- winning full-length but have come to be known as staples of Mr. Pallet's live performances. "Hey Dad" begins in an unassuming dream- state only to build to a gorgeous drum-roll and tambourine march. "What Do You Think Will Happen Next?" seeks a life sans cigarettes with a tight rock drum, nearly synth-sounding violins, and the help of Mr. Condon's signature horns. Frantic, The
Audio and Murder
PS, US Like hometown pop-punk heroes ALKALINE TRIO, THE FRANTIC'S music has found that fragile balance between pop and punk that can simultaneously cause a nose bloodying circle pit and mass sing-a-longs. Like the hair metal bands of the 80's, of which The Frantic sound nothing like, these guys are set on enjoying life as a rock 'n' roll band. They're not here to make a fashion statement and their main goal is to play for as many people as possible. After playing the same venues in their same small town for 4 years, they're bursting to get on the road and take on the world. Well, here they come.

Goldmund
Two Point Discrimination
PS, US "Two Point Discrimination" marks GOLDMUND (aka KEITH KENNIFF)'s 3rd release after his highly praised debut "Corduroy Road" and followup 7" "The Heart of High Places" for TYPE RECORDS. Part of WESTERN VINYL'S "Portrait Series", this collection features 11 short pieces for solo piano focusing on the sensation of touch and its relationship to sound. In the spirit of composers such as Howard Skempton and Morton Feldman, composition and sound culminate together as space is something that is dealt with directly. And interpretation along with improvisation are both tools that blur the lines between composer, performer and listener.

Hepburns, The
Something Worth Stealing
PS, US CD digipak with 24 page booklet in English & Japanese. Pearly guitar pop in the finest UK tradition, albeit skewed sideways by cinematic caprices and elliptical narrative. Probably the Hepburns' lightest album, "Something Worth Stealing" was written as a romantic fling with no skeletons in the closet...well, unusually few skeletons by Hepburns standards, discounting the up-tempo duet with the dead guy who comes back to woo a former lover, the ghostly coal mine choir in the jazzy shadows on the ditty about the strongman's cape, and, perhaps, the ode to Scooby-Doo's Velma. This album is more a celebration of joyrides, spring storms, dinosaur incisors, winter fashions, boho wannabes, humdrum and conundrum, the occasional poisoned dart, and the use of the word "penultimate." SWS showcases the blossoming of the Hepburns' association with White & White (brass and flute, respectively) which started halfway through the sessions for the last album. In addition to the Hepburns' trademark organ and vibraphone riff-laden, jazz- and ska-tinged jangle, topped with words that could have only been penned by Matt "all Welshmen are Liars" Jones, the new album features the song everyone has been waiting to hear since the last album: "The Last Thing I Saw Before I Said Goodbye." Digipak plus 24 page illustrated booklet with lyrics and commentaries by Jones in English (with Japanese translations by the esteemed Jun Kurihara). File under fiction. For fans of: el Records, The Lucksmiths, The Monochrome Set, The Smiths, The Specials, Momus and Jake Thackray. The Hepburns tour the US in November 2007 and Scandinavia in December 2007.

Sweet Earth Flower: A Tribute to Marion Brown
PS, US Originally conceived as a free concert at the University of Michigan Museum of Art in 2004, recording for Sweet Earth Flower began shortly after that successful evening. HNIA has chosen to honor the music of Marion Brown-saxophonist, composer, and one of the great innovators of New Music. Although Brown appeared on John Coltrane's Ascension; performed alongside Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders, and Archie Shepp; and recorded albums for IMPULSE!, ECM, Black Lion, and ESP-Disk, he remains a largely unsung hero of avant- garde jazz.

Hisato Higuchi
Butterfly Horse Street
PS, US Tokyo-based guitarist/singer HISATO HIGUCHI has shaped an inimitable sound sphere of solitary electric notes that drape across his unearthly moan during the course of two full-lengths and an EP. Channeling loneliness and desires as elegant six-string tone poems, Higuchi has reached the heights of fellow travelers from Meredith Monk to Charalambides. Though Butterfly Horse Street adds an unexpected snarl as Higuchi erupts into free/noise, wall of sound guitar style that echoes the most ecstatic string manipulation of Masayuki Takayanagi or Donald Miller (Borbetomagus). Ferocious and howling, Higuchi still paints desolation whether bleeding into the red or as hushed beauty.

PS, US Hologram makes its North American debut via the n5MD imprint with their album "hologram +." "hologram +" melds together detailed post-rock instrumentation, subtle electronic textures, and thoughtful, yet meaningful, female vocals. While their carefully crafted songs may seem a bit out of place on a label founded on emotional electronics, upon further listens one finds that they are right at home amongst such kindred spirits as labelmates lights out asia and bitcrush. Hologram's direction reflects an original take on familiar genre themes, but pushes way beyond specific genre trappings by tossing aside the clichés and commonality to focus on the raw emotion involved in creating music. Hologram is exclusively licensed outside of Japan via Zankyo Records.

Hussy's, The
We Expected
PS, JAPAN Glaswegian sextet The Hussy's boasts catchy, punchy songwriting with tinges of Madness, Cardigans, and Kirsty McColl. Fronted by 21-year-old ex-folk vocalist Fili and former Supernatural, James McColl, they released their debut EP "Tiger" in September 2005, and a second EP in March 2006, both on their own Fat Cheerleader records. Their May 2007 single "We Expected" reached number 22 on the UK indie charts. "Each song the Hussy's play is pop par excellence, dipping into whichever musical genre they feel like and wrapping it into a bona fide contemporary pop song a la Scissor Sisters." - Alex McCann, Designer Magazine. This "We Expected" mini album is a perfect introduction to their burgeoning cargo of hits. The Hussy's recently licensed an unreleased new song "Rock Concert" to American shoe company, Payless

Ifwhen
We Will Gently Destroy You
PS, US Formed by Merc a founding member of the post-shoegaze band All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors - Ifwhen has been spreading their somewhat noisy, especially melodic and oddly structured music throughout NYC and beyond. ANL+LF had worldwide acclamation with 3 LPs released in the US, Europe and Japan. Their sound was considered unique to their peers due its complexity both sonically and compositionally. That band disbanded in the early 2000s and Merc rose from the ashes to form Ifwhen, taking the complexity and sonic attitude to the next level. With a live show including a real time visual artist creating live projections and an immense arsenal of sound, Ifwhen are not meant to be merely listened to ~ they need to be experienced. We Will Gently Destroy You was mixed by Däleks Oktopus at Deadverse Studios in early 2007. The album marks the first US release from Ifwhen. Sounding like very carefully orchestrated chaos, dense walls of sound create multiple rhythms. Melody lines intertwine while the bass and drums often find pleasantly awkward, unexpected grooves ~ and those grooves take the foreground when time signatures and key signatures seem to change at any given moment and usually without warning. At times, it almost sounds as if all the band members are playing separate songs. It can be somewhat disorienting. Although it can mess with your head a little if you let it, it's not all about discord. Gentle vocals and melodic hooks float about the songs, managing to consistently keep them slightly pretty around the edges. Amidst the commotion, somehow it all makes just enough sense - convincing you to find that normalcy is just another part of their equation. Influences and elements are certainly present, though difficult to put an exact finger on. Not quite as twisted as Syd Barrett, not as monstrous as Glenn Branca, not as abrasive as the Velvet Underground and not as technical as King Crimson but its certainly all in there. Clairecords vinyl-only sister label Claires Echo will be releasing a split 12 of Ifwhen and Dälek in early 2008.

Etched within the grooves, listeners will find epic, guitar-drenched songs about aliens, hallucinogenic psych numbers that turn on you & crush you when you least expect it, drunken brawling garage rock, heavy & dense guitar stomps,a country ode to 40 oz.malt liquor, a punk tribute to cuisine best not discussed in mixed company, and a sprawling sword metal epic; this concluding piece being inspiration for some brilliant insert art from Mike Gunn alumnus John Cramer.

Mannequin Men
Fresh Rot
PS, US Chicago yahoos debut full-length, think Stones and Stooges... PITCHFORK REVIEW: "Chicago's Mannequin Men swear by rock music's most basic essentials; take two guitars, a bass, and drums, mix with intractable sexual energy/angst, and let sit for 18-24 years. The four-piece's sophomore album, Fresh Rot, offers nothing more and nothing less than this rock fundamentalist recipe. With their unpolished assault on hard-to-get girls, crusty establishments, and the 9-to-5 lifestyle, many have slapped the "proto-punk" tag on the band, a label accurate only in the sense that these guys don't care to advance the rock genre, they just want to harness the carnal passion that made cavemen start banging things together in the first place."

Monster Magnet
4-Way Diablo
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The longtime mustachioed leader of Monster Magnet, Dave Wyndorf, is pretty darn lucky to be alive, as he nearly succumbed to a drug overdose in early 2006. But he's made a full recovery, and has returned to the driver's seat for the group's seventh full-length overall, 2007's 4-Way Diablo. While known primarily as a molar-rattling biker metal band to many, ol' Wyndorf has never covered up his admiration of garage rock and psychedelia -- but kicking off a Monster Magnet album with a track that oozes lava lamps and paisley (the title track) is a bit unsuspected. But have no fear, the trademark Monster Magnet roar soon reappears, as evidenced by such good old-fashioned ass kickers as "Wall of Fire" and "You're Alive." However, the group refuses to get one-dimensional, as evidenced by a trippy cover of the Rolling Stones obscurity "2000 Lightyears from Home," as well as tracks that would sound dandy to those who like to live in an "altered state" -- especially "Freeze and Pixelate." Much to the delight of concerned longtime fans, 4-Way Diablo signals a strong return to form for a band that came very close to being cut short." (Greg Prato)

Of Soft Construction
PS, US San Francisco based musician Tim Arndt brings his Near the Parenthesis project to n5MD with the release of his second album "Of Soft Construction." This sophomore effort finds Arndt luring his potent song writing capabilities to the forefront yielding something truly exceptional. Spiraling piano sonnets are juxtaposed against sweeping cascades of grainy synthwashes and agile, yet carefully executed, beat-work. Add in an occasional mid radio station listen-in on a seemingly unfinished conversation and you have an idea of "Of Soft Construction's" perfected audible DNA. Near the Parenthesis has proven that he is yet another artist to capture the n5MD ethos in its truest most honest form.

Outrageous Cherry
S-T
PS, CANADA We are happy to present to you the official re-mastered and extended re-issue of Outrageous Cherry's 1994 debut album. It was in 1996 that we discovered their second album Stereo Action Rent Party, an amazing collection of covers that achieved the unlikely in actually not denigrating, but in fact making their own, an eclectic set of material by Scott Walker, Brian Eno, 10CC, The Incredible String Band, Television, the Smiths, and beyond. Not many bands can do respectable and unique versions of such venerable material, yet Outrageous Cherry pulled it off. We've been fans ever since, and have loved every single one of their original albums that followed...EXCEPT the first album from 1994. Yes, it is a great album-We just couldn't find copies anywhere. Indeed, the first album proved so impossible to find, we had to re-issue it just to get copies for ourselves. Therein lays our admittedly selfish motivation. Thankfully, we made enough for you too. Discover where things started for arguably the finest band to come out of Detroit since the SRC and the Bob Seger System. What is this Outrageous Cherry circa 1994? Well, you have primal VU style drumming, noisy guitars, catchy hook after catchy hook, a certain individual psychedelic sheen, and great songs, songs, songs. Matthew Smith and co started here, and we invite you to see what we're all worked up about.

You, Me & Everyone
PS, US Fresh off the triumph of MUSH'S 2006 re-release of his self-titled debut (where he took the 2003 Melodic version back to the studio for a sonic overhaul), London's mighty PEDRO returns with "You, Me & Everyone." While comparisons to artists like Four Tet and Minotaur Shock have been natural on his past releases, Pedro approaches this latest set of compositions in a way that continues to establish his unique take on folk and jazz based electronica. Free-jazz horn blasts ring out with new vigor, drums hit a bit harder, and Pedro continues to forge new elements into his song craft, even raising the ghosts of Liquid Liquid and A Certain Ratio on a track or two. "You, Me & Everyone" will surely be the album that secures Pedro a position among the game's elite.

The 1981, second, and final, Slits studio album, featuring the same line up as their first album "Cut", Ari Up, Tessa Pollit and Viv Albertine. This record has often been overshadowed by the more controversial 1979 "Cut" album. It represents their natural development as artistes by focussing more on their interests in dub and "world music" sound eclecticism (featuring Steve Beresford and ex Pop Group drummer Bruce Smith ) that is well suited to their, by then, more accomplished playing style. Sun City Girls
Jacks Creek
PS, US The Sun City Girls' Jacks Creek was originally released in 1995, now reissued here on CD for the first time since the limited edition vinyl original went out-of-print 12 years ago. As Robert Dayton reviewed the LP version: "This album was reviled by the more avant-hipster snob crowd. As time passes, its reputation surely grows to put it right up there with the finest of The Sun City Girls' diverse canon. And that is saying something! Being an act that can already alienate the unready, what caused this record to alienate their more uptight fans? Maybe it's because it was their hillbilly album. Maybe it's because the album opens during a still evening on a back porch with them talking about a mysteriously colored smell that predates an Indian burial ground and moaning 'He wore red to keep the devil away' and distant howling and warnings that get more and more spooked out, gradually turning into a disfigured, slackjaw, downhoe preying on urban fears over its thirteen-plus minutes running time. Then follows a percussive piano-based swamp chase led by a gnarled stick shaker which turns over into improperly distilled moonshine chants. Side two contains lots of little musically inventive snapshots and curios. A good time jamboree on termite wood called "Useless Stillborn." A Civil War call to arms for people way too rot gut broken down to ever pass the draft. And oh so much more to offer from this trio who go above and beyond the call of duty of what could have been (but not in their hands) a one (or thirty) joke premise. I take it that you are already musically adventurous, well, give this a try! Feels like they're shrinking (expanding) your head and preserving it in a jug.

Tupelo Honeys
Tupelo Honeys Salute You + 2
PS, JAPAN Stockholm-based boy/girl duo of twins Joel and Linn Edin have played music more or less all their lives, and finally released their debut "Tupelo Honeys Salute You" this summer. After their passion for making fresh and unpretentious music was re-ignited by none other than Lily Allen, Tupelo Honeys concocted a mournful but optimistic, lush but intimate album, brimming with allusions to Eggstone, Camera Obscura, Arcade Fire, and The Kissaway Trail. Sub Pop artists Loney, Dear guest on a few songs, along with other friendly cohorts who also lend their talents. The Japanese version has different artwork and two great bonus tracks.

B9 bis: Brussels Cold Wave 1979-82
PS, UK 18 tracks. B9 bis, a definitive compilation CD tracing the development of post-punk and new wave music in Belgium between 1979 and 1983. Originally released on indie label Sandwich Records in May 1981, the compilation album B9 featured ten exclusive tracks by a range of diverse Belgian new wave, electronic and underground artists, including Digital Dance, Polyphonic Size, Kid Montana, Pseudo Code and Prothese - the latter the first recording project by Daniel B of Front 242. Although Sandwich was destined to be overshadowed by better-known Brussels labels such as Les Disques du Crepuscule and Crammed Discs, founder Michel Lambot soon afterwards formed European indie empire PIAS. Now digitally remastered and available on CD for the first time, B9 now features an extra eight bonus tracks in order to provide a more comprehensive snapshot of new wave music in Belgium between 1979 and 1983. Mostly taken from rare singles, the extra tracks include songs by The Names, Marine, Front 242, Siglo XX, Allez Allez, Berntholer, Jung and Isolation Ward. As well as revised artwork, this expanded 70 minute edition of B9 also includes detailed sleevenotes and an assortment of period images and graphics.

Youngs, Richard
Autumn Response
PS, US VINYL VERSION!!!
LP
$11.50

Youngs, Richard
Autumn Response
PS, US "Autumn Response" is a spartan folk-"pop" record filled with tinder-box intimacies, composed of some of the shortest songs ever recorded by RICHARD YOUNGS. The simplest form of trickery comes from Richard Youngs' restrained use of an acoustic guitar, bringing it back to Youngs basics. Twenty-six seconds into "I Need the Light", the first track off the album, the listener is confronted with the pivotal element of the record, the drawing line between the hardcore Youngs purists and fairweather fans: the track, like others on the record, features Youngs' double-tracked voice splitting in two - as one overlaid performance veers away from the other. This gesture warrants such a title "King of the Progressive Minimalists" - which is often used beside his name by critics - as the confident inclusion of such an effect grants it legitimacy. Youngs' voices slipping away from one another is on par with other intense representations of singularity such as Donald Judd and Malevich's Suprematist Composition: White on White. Pop is a gesture, a stance, a pose. "Autumn Response" is a singer-songwriter album, as Youngs' fingers slip over the steel strings with little feet and whispery toes, his gently prophetic songs evoke Roger Waters and the folk phase play is sure to appeal to fans of Animal Collective's "Sung Tongs."

Zookeeper
Becoming All Things
PS, US On this release, Chris Simpson (MINERAL, GLORIA RECORD) moves away from his influential brand of emotionally captivating indie rock to a brighter but equally expressive folk/pop/rock sound. There is a feeling of freedom, new birth & joy in these tracks as Simpson & his band Zookeeper quite literally let loose. Hotly anticipated, the ten tracks take the listener on an eclectic expedition. Raucous slices of acoustic jangle-pop align in epic form. At times tender & cathartic, discordant & melodic, the album lyrically & sonically reveals an influential artist in his prime.

Birchville Cat Motel
Seventh Ruined Hex (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 20TH)
PS, US A further step out in Birchville Cat Motel's ruminations on time space distortion featuring the additional mystical talents of fellow gravity destroyer, Matthew Bower (Hototogisu/Sunroof!). Seventh Ruined Hex presents like a lonesome planet, occasionally struck with super-sized fragments of space detritus, but for the most part just hangs around, spinning on its axis and doing fuck-all. Strangely emotive for 'a buncha noise'. Like the deepest love, its warm yet tenuous, and filled with the ever-present potential for loss and brutality. More in line with the estranged love-tangle of the Birchville classic 'Chi Vampires' than the most recent befuddling hyperspace rock-overload of recent albums like 'Our Love Will Destroy the World' and 'Birds Call Home their Dead'. Features Matthew Bower who has been known to put out a good album or two on a regular basis. Powerful. Beautiful. Masculine. Girly. Loud. Tender. Heavy. Soulful.

Bryars, Gavin
Hommages (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 13TH)
PS, UK Remastered. Originally released in November 1981 on Les Disques du Crepuscule, Hommages was recorded in Leicester in February 1981 and produced by noted Belgian new music composer Wim Mertens. The album was conceived as a series of diverse homage's to other composers, which include Bill Evans (My First Homage), Ferruccio Busoni and Gustav Holst (The English Mail-Coach and The Vespertine Park) and Percy Grainger (Hi-Tremolo). Featured musicians included Andrew Bilham, Ronald Reah, Andrew Renshaw, Nigel Shipway, Dave Smith, John White and Marie Wilson, as well as Gavin Bryars himself on piano and vibraphone. The album is the only one that documents the important period between Bryars' early experimental music and later works from Medea onwards, as well as his enthusiasm for small composer/performer ensembles. The new 63 minute digital remaster of Hommages now includes two bonus tracks composed and recorded by Bryars during the same period: Danse Dieppoise, and the lengthy piano piece Out of Zaleski's Gazebo. The booklet features extensive notes by Gavin Bryars on the origin and performance of all six pieces, and preserves the original album cover artwork by Marc Borgers.

Cline, Nels/Carlos Giffoni/Alan Licht/Lee Ranaldo
Nothing Makes Any Sense (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 20TH)
PS, US A constantly shifting and engaging long-form piece of developed drone, foreboding melody, and harsh grit, Nothing Makes Any Sense finds Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Nels Cline (Nels Cline Singers, Wilco), and Alan Licht pushing their guitars into a cacophonous state that bears much influence from the post-jazz fields they've all cut their teeth in, but also bearing down a forceful brutality that has sometimes eluded their past material. While Carlos Giffoni uses his analog Synth mastery to adequately contend and mesh seamlessly with the trio of strings, letting his analog noise pulsate and pierce with its own sense of contained stampede. This collaboration was recorded in February of this year at the sadly defunct NYC venue Tonic and was mixed and mastered by the ubiquitous James Plotkin. Included with the packaging are ink drawings from Lee Ranaldo and a review of Lou Reed's live classic Rock N' Roll Animal by cult musician/Creem scribe Peter Laughner, which includes a line which bestowed this album with its title.

Club 8
The Boy Who Couldn't Stop Dreaming (ON SALE/ PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 13TH)
PS, SWEDEN Club 8 is finally back with their long awaited sixth album. "The boy who couldn't stop dreaming" is everything we'd ever hoped it would be - it's pop music at it's most profound, balancing perfectly between sunshine and melancholia. Twelve songs that'll make you sing along about death while dreaming of summer days. A glorious return to say the least. After having released three albums in just over two years time, very few expected they'd have to wait over four years for a new Club 8 album. Some even started to assume the band had split up. In May 2007 the band returned with the amazing Tropicalia-influenced "Whatever you want" which rapidly became a huge blog hit - top 10 most blogged songs according to music blog aggregator Elbo.ws The waiting's been so long we can almost, but just almost, talk about a comeback album. However, waiting's not always a bad thing. Not only has songwriter Johan Angergård released three albums with The Legends and one with Acid House Kings in the time in between - Club 8 has evolved in to one of the most personal and emotional bands around today. Not that previous albums have lacked emotional depth, that's far from the truth, but "The boy who couldn't stop dreaming" is truly different and a very very special album. The fleeting of life and time, and the nearness of death arrives in the shape of twelve perfect pop songs in a summer dress. It's mix of sunshine and melancholia is just as unique as it's profoundly moving.

A tiny treasurebox from a lost garden, this album finds Robin further exploring his unique world; one of delicate harp compositions, glissando & deep drones. Soundscapes for daydreamers of this & other worlds.
