Parasol New Arrivals • May 06, 2008

Hey Everybody,

Oh boy! We here at Parasol are all stoked on the new offering from the multi-instrumentalist dude, Sunset. It could very well be the perfect spring record of 2008.

Other than that, as summer comes creeping we’re happy to have the likes of No Age, (upcoming) Notwist, Awesome Color, Dillard and Clark re-issue, Tape and a slew of other releases to guide us through until mean old winter comes a-knockin’.

Work your way through the list and we’ll leave the light on for you.

Perfect form,

Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

{{{Sunset}}} "Bright Blue Dreams" (Auto Bus) CD $9.75
Initially intrigued by the band name bracketing once we actually got to hear this astounding record we were officially haunted by ex-Sound Team/Austin music scene dude Bill Baird’s wyrd, new, lo-fi discombobulation. {{{Sunset}}}’s stupendously sweet, gothic-ghost-folk, echoing daydream bong-pop and ambient, quaalude serenity is laced with lullaby chanting and high-lonesome drones. A collection of actual songs and mesmerizing interludes with knowing, nodding nods to Warm Jets-era Eno, Syd’s dirigible Pink Floyd, The Beta Band's kitchen-sink mantras, the Kranky Records roster circa 1997 (Jessamine, Stars of the Lid, etc), and even the ambient codas found on Love & Rockets' Seventh Dream of a Teenage Heaven. Yum.

In Case You Missed It, Angie's PLG Sale Artist Of The Week

16 Horsepower
Live: March 2001
PS, US While live albums are often fodder for completists, 16 Horsepower's intoxicating material becomes even more potent on stage, making 16 Horsepower Live a must-have release. Their instrumentation transforms the usually lighthearted banjo and squeezebox into the loneliest choir that accompanies the smoldering voice of David Eugene Edwards. Often likened to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, 16 Horsepower definitely has that laudanum-soaked aura, but is firmly rooted in Americana. Unlike their contemporaries, however, they aim beyond popular music in the key of sad and delve right into the human condition for something weighty and substantial. The way 16 Horsepower pours themselves into writing and performing, Live March 2001, the third installation of their live material, will surely be welcomed with open arms, not with snipes about bludgeoning dead equines.

PS, US Water Curses sees the band's capacity for re-imaging their constituent parts into ever more interesting and saturated shapes go up by a giddy notch. All four tracks have a more stripped down feel than their recent work, opener "Water Curses" takes an unexpected rhythm and throws it up, down and sideways to produce the sound of a smile. A technique that Animal Collective are now in a position to call their own.

If you love the Stones and the soundtracks to films investigating the liminal period that the 60s and early 70s represented, Chasing Rainbows should find its way into your collection."

Blows Your Mind! (2001)
PS, DENMARK Special orders welcome. 2001 debut from Danish retro-stoner-rock giants featuring members of On Trial. STONERROCK.COM: "The music is very different from Lorenzo's main band On Trial, this is 60´s sounding psychedelic rock with a strong pop vibe. If you have (and love) the Nuggets box you'll love this as well, if you also like The Wellwater Conspiracy and bands like Farflung and ST 37 you gotta buy this disc as well. ...Lorenzo has a great voice that at times reminds me of Dave Wyndorf's, on top of that he handles all the instruments himself on this CD. ...You simply can't go wrong with a record filled to the brim with acid guitars, trippy lyrics, great vocals and extremely catchy melodies with a strong pop vibe (which is an art that seems to have been more or less forgotten since the heydays in the 60´s)."

Baghiri, Amir
Ghazal
PS, POLAND A sterling piece of work from Germany based Iranian Amir Baghiri, a proliftic Ambient composer. For this release on Polish label Vivo, Baghiri plays a shopful of Middle Eastern instruments: oud and saz lutes, flutes and the Turkish sipsi reed pipe. But it's in the drums that his heart lies, and a panoply of percussion from Egypt to Azerbaijan is pressed into service to create dense, danceworthy workouds. Like a warmer version of the late Muslimgauze, Baghiri layers and manipulates textures, drones and fragments of voice in his dark-hued, mesmerising tracks. Often it's like listening to the crackle of a beach bonfire laid over drumming. Baghiri's trump card is his deployment of field recordings to thicken the mix, especially a heady desert wind that seems to blow straight out of a Paul Bowles novel set in Morocco. The whole of "Emamzadeh Hashem" is a soup of wind, street noise and distant music, while on "Eshragh" a pondful of frogs get involved with the beats. Baghiri's musical vision is impressive, and by dedicating the album to Ali Asghar Bahari, an early 20th century master of the bowed kemancheh, he unexpectedly underlines his music's place in the Iranian tradition. Clive Bell / The Wire [252].

Birthmark
The Layer
PS, US Under the appellation Birthmark, Nate Kinsella has embraced restraint in spite of the compositional boundlessness typically borne by musical virtuosity. On his debut album The Layer, the inventive and often byzantine drum set/Wurlitzer style he developed over the past four years in the band Make Believe is all but absent, revealing a quiet and uncanny tension of minimalist focus. And while Kinsella performed all of the music on The Layer, recalling his multi-instrumental duties in the band Joan of Arc, the listener is more awestruck by the attention to integration and score than by a whirlwind of prowess. The Layer represents an effort that began over eight years ago with the song "Flightless Bird," which was originally written for a friend's unfinished film project. Over time, the songs transitioned through amorphous forms until their ideal structures were achieved, further revealing The Layer to be a product of discreet process. In fact, two sharply contrasting songs on The Layer "A Solitary Angle on the Confinement of Doom" and "The Layer" started as the same tune, and the piano throughout was recorded in Minnesota over two consecutive Christmas vacations. While the recording of the album spans four years and numerous locations, it is bound by an elegant and earthy lyrical form that is telling of Kinsella's ardent atheism and wonder at the natural world. The Layer further bears witness to his growth as a recording engineer, which ostensibly began with his former band decembers architects' only LP and progressed to collaborating on multiple recordings by Joan of Arc, Sharks and Seals, Owen, and most recently the soundtrack to Tim Kinsella's debut film, Orchard Vale. As Birthmark, Nate Kinsella's The Layer is a remarkable album that rewards both the casual and attentive listener alike.

Blank Blue
Western Water Music, Vol. II
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Experimental DJ and producer Nobody has long established his ability to work with a variety of different artists. He's collaborated with rappers and remixed songs for all sorts of bands, and so his transition to working with singers in 2003 with Pacific Drift: Western Water Music, Vol. 1, proved to be seamless enough. In 2008, for the second volume, Nobody decided to have only one vocalist, Niki Randa, a colleague of his from the same Long Beach record store. The result, Western Water Music, Vol. II, is a conceptual album based around the idea of a giant flood that sinks California, and the instrumental arrangements do a good job of reflecting this, bending and swelling and retreating like the water they're inspired by. This is not a destructive, terrifying flood; instead, it's one that envelopes and calms and changes, and this kind of mystical quality is heard in the intricately layered guitars and keys, the swirling percussion and samples, the whole thing very ethereal, very lush and lovely with only the occasional hints of unrest."

This collection is a wide range of sound works from the ultra-minimal whispers of "composition09.01" to the subtle harmonics and musicality of "how things change" to the loud violent distortion of "tempt" (a piece only performed a handful of times for noisy spaces, for example this was one was in attempt to drown out Akufen's set filtering from an adjoining area). Many of these original compilations are out of print or hard to find editions and "untitled" making its debut on CD from its original vinyl appearance. Desolation Wilderness
Horizon Star
PS, US "Desolation Wilderness is the musical result of an American middle class spilling out of the suburbs and turning into light." -Aphonia Recordings Desolation Wilderness is Nicolas Zwart. Originally hailing from Marin County and the plastic outskirts of Sacramento, CA, he is now living in Olympia, WA working on a variety of musical projects and interning at world-renowned indie label, K Records. A musician of many disciplines, his solo electronic work took precedence in his late teens after playing with a variety of bands. With a few releases under his belt on various net labels such as Audiotoning, Test Tube, and Aphonia Recordings, we now present Desolation Wilderness's first official CD release on FKDP Records: "Horizon Star". The album "Horizon Star" by Desolation Wilderness offers a melancholy and personal soundscape for the listener. Poetic melodies and electronic tones comfort your soul, while Desolation Wilderness weaves a cozy gray blanket of warm synths and fallen beats for the winter inside.

Deupree, Taylor
Northern (Re-issue)
PS, US Expanded reissue CD package w/ 24 page booklet. Due to continued demand for this title and the fact that the initial pressing of 1,500 copies sold out in less than 6 months, 12k is re-issuing "Northern" in an expanded package with re-mixed and re-mastered audio. The audio: Not content to merely order a re-pressing of the same masters on hand at the Cd manufacturer, Taylor Deupree set out to create what he calls the "director's cut" of one of the most important Cds in his catalog. The idea was to open the now-2-year-old computer files to re-mix and re-master the tracks. Of course over the course of years computers change, formats change, and Deupree found himself faced with missing plug-ins, errored sound files and other oddities that made working with the files difficult. What first seemed like roadblocks turned into a mission to work with what was there and re-do what was not. The result is a "Northern" that will, on the surface, seem quite similar to the original, however listeners will hear new sounds, extended endings, shortened endings and most of all, an overall mix that presents these works with a new clarity and spaciousness. Mastering in the analog domain has given the work a new found sense of delicacy and detail. the package: A heavyweight cardboard wallet with debossed typography on the front cover. Inside are two pockets, one for the CD and one for a 24-page booklet of photography, credits, and lots of white space. All printing, as with the original, is in black and white.

Esquivel, Juan Garcia
Mexico Days
PS, UK MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!! The King of Space-Age Pop, the genius of Mexican composer-arranger Juan Garcia Esquivel lay in his audacious instrumentation; his blending together of exotic sounds from other cultures and experimentation with the new tonal palettes that were becoming available in the mid-fifties period from which these, his earliest commercial recordings, derived. Esquivel has been proclaimed by Brian Wilson and by Simpsons creator Matt Groening, "Who'd have thought that out of a genre as debased as easy listening would come something so mind-curdling bizarre and beautiful." This set comprises the first digital release of Esquivel s impossibly rare first album Las Tandas de Juan Garcia Esquivel from 1957 coupled with To Love Again; a collection of singles and 78s recorded in Mexico between 1954-57. Tracklist: Tracklist: Collar De Perlas, Poupurri Curiel, Medley, Goya Universidad, Una Y Otra Vez Sketch Glenn Miller, Tren Nocturno, Nereidas, No Seas Asi, Capullito De Alheli, Bailando Sabras, Politecnico Rock And Roll, To Love Again, Port-Au-Prince, Amor, Moonlight Enchantment, Nightingale, Nocturnal, Jungle Drums, Vereda Tropical, Hornblower's Serenade, Besame Mucho, Siboney, Nothing Ever Changes My Love For You.

Everest
Ghost Notes
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Ghost Notes is the perfect moniker for this album, Everest's first. The group may be new, but the members have been kicking around the L.A. indie scene forever, finally coming together in this amalgamation to resurrect the sounds of the past. Recorded mostly live in the studio entirely on analog tape, the entire set has an early-'70s feel, as well as a glow to the sound that reflects Mike Terry's expert engineering and production. The album divides rather nicely into two halves, just like a vinyl set, with the first half a bit brighter with pop undertones, the second more shadowed and pushing into jam and prog rock territory... If you distilled Dark Side of the Moon, Pet Sounds, and Revolver into a glass and poured it over the California surf, it would probably sound like this... The music throughout is sublime, the sound extraordinary, the arrangements inspired, and Russell Pollard's lyrics capture the style of the past while feeling as fresh as today. Classic sounds make for a classic album, which is precisely what Ghost Notes is."

Fair Ain't Fair
PS, US PREFIX MAG: "Yes, it's an unfair world we live in. And Tim Fite sings about injustice and insecurity on songs like "Trouble," "Big Mistake," "Rats and Rags," and "Heaven is War." The greedier side of the soul is familiar territory for Fite; past albums of his include Over the Counter Culture and Gone Ain't Gone. Like Jens Lekman or the Avalanches, Fite crafts his music by incorporating samples of rare recordings by other obscure artists. My Brightest Diamond and folks from Sufjan Stevens' backing band guest on Fair Ain't Fair."

Four Tet
Ringer
PS, US A 32-minute, four-track excursion into the kind of wide-open spaces you might find if you set out to make techno with an Afro-beat / krautrock sensibility. These are tracks that make you think of Berlin - Dakar - Detroit - but they could only have been made in London. All four are headphone epics, but are mixed in such a way you have to hear them at Plastic People or The End. "Ringer" carries that minimal pulse over into Four Tet, and while Kieran Hebden's trademark recuttings of jazz breaks may be less in evidence, his feel for harmony and melody is, as always, unmistakable.

Freitas, Nik
Sun Down
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "For his fourth album, Sun Down, Nik Freitas creates an incredibly intimate atmosphere, a gentle setting for his musing, mostly introspective songs. The consummate singer/songwriter, Freitas can deftly conjure up a wealth of nuanced and carefully shaded moods, agilely incorporating a diverse range of influences and styles into his soft sound. "Sophie," the most upbeat number on the set, romps with R&B tossing bright brass into the mix. The downbeat "Oh My God" gently rocks on R&B of a very different flavor, edging simultaneously towards the blues and space rock, while "All the Way Down" swings towards jazz. If Ray Davies and Randy Newman co-wrote a song, it would probably sound a lot like this... Freitas' lyrics are just as complex, the set's themes variously optimistic or fatalistic by turn. Ending with the lullaby strains of "Shhhh," Sun Down is deliberately understated, but gloriously so. A gorgeous album."

Cowardly Traveller Pays His Toll
PS, US Omaha, Nebraska's Joyner has been writing about the dizzy and dark aspects of the human condition since 1992. This is the re-issue of the long out-of-print 1994 seminal LP. John Peel famously played it in its entirety on his BBC radio program and Joyner's underground cult status was solidified. Long Blondes
Couples
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The Long Blondes' second album, Couples, avoids the clichéd sophomore slump by taking some chances and leaving behind the joyous clatter and clutter of their debut for a more emotionally powerful, sonically adventurous approach. With producer Erol Alkan behind the boards, the group removes the punk from its post-punk sound and adds more post. That is, more icy detachment, more space, and careful arrangement of instruments and more of an eye to the disco-punk dancefloor. Where the songs on Someone to Drive You Home were almost giddily peppy and bursting with energy, the songs here feel like they were taken right from the studio, stored in a freezer for a month, and then mastered onto disc. (Think the Blondie of "X Offender" versus the Blondie of "Heart of Glass" for a quick and relevant comparison.)"

Manfred Mann
Up The Junction OST
PS, UK Based on Nell Dunn's controversial novel, the 1968 film Up The Junction pulled few punches in dealing with contemporary London working class life. With a cast featuring Suzy Kendall and Dennis Waterman, the certificate X movie was also notable for a strong score performed and written by Mike Hugg and Manfred Mann. Not their first foray in film music, it nevertheless remains one of their strongest works of the period and is hugely enjoyable in its own right. Director Peter Collinson was more than pleased with the outcome: The result was incredible; they captured the heart of the picture. Their music belonged to the picture, it was not super imposed. The tunes will exist long after the picture has been forgotten! Up The Junction (Vocal) / Sing Songs Of Love / Walking Round / Up The Junction (Instrumental) / Love Theme (Instrumental) / Up The Junction (Vocal And Instrumental) / Just For Me / Love Theme (Instrumental) / Sheila's Dance / Belgravia / Wailing Horn / I Need Your Love / Up The Junction (Vocal) / Bonus Track / Sleepy Hollow.

Marxy
Forty Years From Now
PS, US Marxy (W. David Marx) is an American living in Tokyo, Japan. His second album Forty Years From Now was recorded over the span of three years in Japanese apartments, Tokyo rehearsal spaces, a Manhattan living room, an Astoria, Queens's bedroom, and the legendary Brooklyn recording studio Studio G. As in his critically lauded debut album Kyoshu Nostalgia, Marxy surrounds his catchy pop melodies with musical references to classic sounds refracted through modern musical technology. The songs built around baroque harpsichord riffs ("Broke Into Our Hearts", "Slouching Towards Bethlehem") and transistor organ solos ("To Save Ourselves") make Forty Years From Now often reminiscent of The Zombies and other psych pop of the late 1960s, but the digital edits, prominent analog synth lines, pulse bass, and chopped up beats drive the tracks into new territory, where past and future intersect. Forty Years From Now quickly jumps between glitch influenced pop ("See Saw"), lo-tech garage pop ("Cotillion"), campfire sing-a-long ("Dippy Dave"), gritty synth rock ("Tachikogi"), and powerhouse rock anthem ("To Save Ourselves"). The synth-squelch-breakbeat jams of "Cat vs. Mouse" features a guest lead vocal from U.T. - singer of Japanese art-pop girl band Kiiiiiii - and intricate production work by Pandatone.

Matmos
Supreme Balloon
PS, US This record finds the band skipping sampling antics in favor of a lighthearted "cosmic pop" record made entirely out of synthesizers. The exotic and antiquated synths used here heavily spotlight the classic 60s/70s/80s consumer electronic rigs of Arp, Korg, Roland, Waldorf, and Moog. But there are also one of a kind curios present. Double LP in heavy duty Stoughton gatefold, pressed in HQ 180-gram vinyl. MP3 coupon. Vinyl includes four extra tracks. CD in digipak with 8-page booklet. PREFIX MAG: "The concept is straightforward: record an album using only synthesizers and no microphones. But for Matmos, a group that built its reputation on found sound and sampling loopholes, the decree is a considerable challenge. However, for a group that can bridge whoopee cushions with Björk, you can expect a certain amount of quality control."

Meho Plaza
S-T
PS, US The experimental pop group has earned its share of love for its buzzing, energetic, yet oddly dreamy approach to synthesized minimalism. This will have you reliving your days of Daydream Nation w/all its angular psyche-pop bliss. Includes a song that was featured on the Pitchfork Infinite Mixtape Series #005. RIYL: No Age, Health, Deerhoof, Crystal Castles. PREFIX MAG: "Go ahead and add noisy, frenetic, underground-rock bands to the list of things that define Los Angeles, alongside palm trees, traffic jams, and the occasional race riot. With its self-titled full-length, Meho Plaza seems set to take its place next to No Age and HEALTH in a lineage that stretches back to older touchstones like the Minutemen and Fear. Meho Plaza has built up a good buzz through a series of limited-edition EPs and copious praise from the L.A. music press. A tight trio, Meho Plaza whip up a lot of racket for a mere three musicians."

No Age
Nouns
PS, US This is succinctly all-encompassing, from the faux-simplicity of the title to the beautiful distortion of its sound, to the packaging that incl. a 68-pg full-color bk packed w/ photos & art pieces. The record opens w/ a symphony of noise & sometimes creeps, sometimes smashes through a sonic headlock befitting Daydream Nation-era Sonic Youth, Kiwi pop, My Bloody Valentine, & experimental noise. PITCHFORK: "No Age follow their 2007 EP compilation, Weirdo Rippers, with an ambitious Sub Pop debut: Nouns is gorgeously thick-- a hazy, delirious expanse that's friendly and warm and, best of all, unpredictable... Nouns is so cacophonous, so fertile, and so ripe with sound that parsing out the samples and effects and various layers of guitar is nearly impossible; besides, it's way more satisfying to just close your eyes and just enjoy it. Ultimately, it's part of No Age's allure that Nouns is so difficult to figure out, that it manages to be so big while coming from a place so small: All you'll know for sure is that you want to listen longer. Maybe forever."

Pattern Is Movement
All Together
PS, US Andrew Thiboldeaux and Chris Ward are a two-man wall of sound. "The combination of Thiboldeaux's swooning, near-operatic singing style and Ward's fierce yet deconstructive drumming, surrounded by flurries of shimmering keys and sometimes strings, makes Pattern Is Movement more unusual than ever. The only band one could rightly compare them to is Radiohead, what with the jaunty song structures and opaque, repetitive lyrics" - Philadelphia Weekly.

Saville, Robin
Peasgood Nonsuch
PS, UK Lugubrious and minimal. Melodic and otherworldly. Hot on the blistering heels of his debut solo single (VAN 145) comes this full-length outing from the social worker turned gardener. Double digging over unlikely boundaries is something of a habit for Robin, and this record characteristically lurches between moods; from elegiac to wistful, and from meditative to bouncy, this record runs the full gamut. Creaking synths, loping bass and a succession of chimes seep from the nimble textures pressed tightly together. Lush and filmic, the nine tracks here cultivate and harvest a twinkling yet intense arc, with strange and alien sounds nestling snugly next to crumpled rhythms and gurgles, all peppered with tinges of acoustic guitar and eerie tones. 'Peasgood Nonsuch' works over nutrient-rich electronica soil, germinating an earthy hybrid of intricately woven melodies and pulses, stewed and heated to perfection. An organic journey from the pesticide-free plot to the kitchen table, it's a recipe full of beat-tastic ingredients ripe for picking from the orchard. As one of half of the duo which comprises Isan, Robin Saville has long been part of that seminal act - masters of slow flow electronica, bridging the gap between different boundaries and atmospheres, not to mention untangling messy knots of wires and cables all around the world. With its roots closer in feel to Isan's earlier, more sprightly offerings, 'Peasgood Nonsuch' is light and warm but with an underlying dark center, so the audible tranquility is imbued with an altogether tougher edge. Next to using a digital pipette to suck up the leaked new Portishead album this gunk of electronic DNA is ripe for unspooling and analyzing in the Petri dish of your own home laboratories. A must for fans of Isan, Inch-Time, Harold Budd, and all things Type Records ; Morr Music and Eno's Obscure label. Edition of 1000 copies in card gatefold.

Sawako
Bitter Sweet
PS, US New York/Tokyo based Sawako is a musician, software designer, and multimedia artist whose multi-disciplinary works intermix and pollenate her music with inspiration ranging from nature, science, academia and poetic motion. Following releases on Anticipate and And/Oar, Bitter Sweet is Sawako's 2nd release on 12k after the critically acclaimed Hum (12k1035) in 2005. Her music is fragile and intimate, delicate, ephemeral and resonant. Bitter Sweet is unmistakably Sawako but finds it moving into much, much deeper territory than her previous works. Building on her past forays into experimental pop, she uses low and mid-frequency drones and soft, melodic highlights to shape beds of stripped-down, shifting into hypnotic and very linear tracks that fill the space they exist. Bitter Sweet is more drone and tonal based than Sawako's previous works. However, these gentle movements are punctuated by field recordings and acoustic instrumentation with cello provided by Jacob Kirkegaard and guitar by Radiosonde and Ryan Francesconi who also co-write two of the pieces on the album. In what has become a bit of a signature, Sawako lends her own voice to the ending lullaby "A Last Next." These combinations produce rich results. Bitter Sweet's diffuse and hazy soundscaping is Sawako's most mature work to date, relying less on her previous child-like melodies while remaining feminine and tender. She has come into her own after having established herself for a number of years as a New Yorker where she has tirelessly performed, studied and created as an important member of the city's electronic music community. Bitter Sweet is packaged in a 6-panel digipack with photography throughout by Brooklyn-based artist and photographer Maki Kaoru.

Welles, Orson
Your Obedient Servant
PS, UK Orson Welles is a titantic figure in popular culture. Before Kane, before Ambersons, The Lady From Shanghai and The Third Man; Before Touch of Evil, his astounding Othello, Chimes At Midnight and F for Fake, Welles created the sensational War of the Worlds broadcast that terrified a nation of American radio listeners. While Hollywood beckoned, Welles and his company, The Mercury Theatre continued to produce compelling radio drama that still sounds extraordinary. Make no mistake, if radio held sway over us like it did during its Golden Age, much of Welles' work in the medium would be as venerated as Kane or any of the other creative triumphs that were to follow. The Hitch-hiker and the chilling Search for Henri Le Fevre were written by Lucille Fletcher. ASS (Andreas Soderstrom Solo)
My Get Up And Go Just Got Up And Went (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 27TH)
PS, UK Very limited! Peering out between the mass of strings, hanging like vines, there must have been a spark of childish curiosity. From the giddy playfulness of youth all the way to the folk hinterland, Andreas Soderstrom has been surrounded by instruments, exposed to the sounds of his father's bazouki factory - an extraordinary mélange of clattering noise and metallic melody. That natural inquisitiveness has obviously paid off, and it surely can't be a coincidence that a career in music beckoned. Trading under the pseudonym Ass - it stands for Andreas Soderstrom Solo - for more than a decade he has been the hitherto unknown man of Swedish pop, having played with the likes of electro-pop priestess Jenny Wilson, digital folk stalwarts Tape, offbeat folk-pop minstrel Blood Music, and Taken By Trees, the latest incarnation of former Concretes singer Victoria Bergsman. All that will change with the release of 'My Get Up and Go Just Got Up and Went', the second full-length album from Soderstrom under his Ass moniker. Soderstrom plays all of the instruments found on this quietly intoxicating 10-track record, the follow-up to his astonishingly assured, eponymous debut - both released on Headspin Recordings. It finds him hacking through the folk undergrowth, his fluid dynamic underpinning a stark melancholy that simmers throughout. It's a real treat, and a chance to hear the whispered charm of a subtly disarming performer. To paraphrase George Clinton - free your mind, and Ass will follow...Very Limited vinyl Edition of 500 copies in thick cardboard stock, lyric insert and on purple wax.

"Baghdad Batterie" is a fabulous piece of laptop psychedelia, and certain to delight fans of Curtis and Elliott's previous collaboration, the exhilarating SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS EP, "Face to Face" on HIGH PLACES. The packaging of this vinyl-only release is similarly spectacular. It's a one-sided, 12-inch LP, PRESSED ON CLEAR VINYL; the REVERSE IS LASER ETCHED with an original illustration by acclaimed UK artist Savage Pencil, whose credits include album art for The Fall, Big Black, and Sonic Youth. New member Pelvis joins Carrie and contributes sounds and backing vocals to the album. 1981 was produced by Rubén Tamayo (Fax). TRACKLISTING: 1. Take One 2. Feeding Little Dogs 3. Stumble 4. Castanets
Tendrils (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 20TH)
PS, US This video document, created by MIA FERM, serves as a snapshot of a particular moment in time surrounding RAPOSA and CASTANETS. It is a meditative reflection on the mesmerizing motion of water, the beauty of natural light, and the spontaneity of friends. Responding to the thickness of the songs on "In The Vines", here the songs are stripped bare and presented by new voices that further reveal the lyrical beauty of Raposa's songwriting. It is equal parts home movie (ala Jonas Mekas), Downtown 81, Pull My Daisy, and audio-visual collage.

Cluster
Berlin 2007 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 13TH)
PS, US Berlin 2007 was a monumental performance for Cluster as it marked the first time that they had peformed live in Berlin since their 12 hour concert in the Galerie Hammer in the Europacenter in 1969. The performance was a massive success as a sold out crowd cheered loudly for Cluster to return to the stage. Fortunately, the concert was preserved for posterity & is proudly presented here. Both Dieter Moebius & H.J. Roedelius play synthesizers & objects.

Collections Of Colonies Of Bees
Six Guitars (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 20TH)
PS, US COLLECTIONS OF COLONIES OF BEES generated quite the (forgive us) buzz, following the January release of their CD "Birds", and deservedly so. Their sound is expansive, vast, and billowing; full of ringing guitars, soaring in the best traditions of the Chatham/Branca standoff; meanwhile, beneath the clouds sprawl dewy meadows of gently rolling electronica. "Six Guitars" is just what its title states, yet so much more. Wildly versatile drummer Jon Mueller follows the rules by hammering on an electric guitar with mallets, enhancing the Steve Reichian vibe (compare this with Mueller's face-melting solo onslaught Metals, also released in January). The band sparkles accordingly, lifting to a dazzling climax. It's epic minimalism in exquisite registration, and the perfect selection to introduce the TABLE OF THE ELEMENTS GUITAR SERIES (fans will be happy to hear that Mueller is on deck with a solo contribution to the series as well). Beyond the music, there's the similarly spectacular packaging. It's a LIMITED-EDITION PRESSING, so get it while you can - disks from the label's original Guitar Series in 1993/1994 are now some of Collectorville's must coveted treasures.

PS, US Fourth album-but the first with wide distribution-by this amazingly assured & swinging "free-bop" collective quartet, who have been developing their unique take on modern jazz for a decade. The group initially incorporated interpretations of music by Ornette, Dolphy, Coltrane & others into their performances, but quickly moved towards playing only original compositions. Central to the group's sound is a commitment to developing challenging & original compositions. The result is a band that pushes the envelope while remaining accessible for over a decade. Cud
Elvis Belt (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 13TH)
PS, UK Formed in Leeds in 1986, CUD went on to forge one of the more interesting and indefinable sounds of the late 80s / early 90s indie scene. Fusing a catchy pop sensibility with danceable grooves and intelligent and often humorous lyrics, they soon became firm independent favorites and began releasing records on Leeds based Reception Records in 1987, very quickly catching the ear of John Peel and becoming a regular fixture of his broadcasts. Three quality singles into their career, the band secured a deal with Imaginary Records, where they continued a fine run of singles and eventually released their debut album. Capitalizing on the band's underground success, in June 1990 Imaginary followed this with this fantastic compilation of their early releases, topping several independent charts in the process and further establishing an already strong reputation. Some eighteen years later, Elvis Belt is updated and reissued here by Cherry Red, together with a wealth of rarities and unreleased tracks from those formative years and beyond. This release features the original album in its entirety, carefully remastered and now sitting comfortably alongside Elvis Handbag, an additional disc conceived by the band as a sister album to the original release and containing a number of further B-Sides, Peel Session recordings and cover versions (including the band's legendary take on Bohemian Rhapsody, previously only available on the ultra-rare Alvin Lives in Leeds compilation). This release (along with two more Cherry Red CUD Reissues) comes hot on the tails of 2006's Rich and Strange The Anthology compilation and 2007s well received re-issues of two more of the band's albums, all of which reminded the world just how great this band were and generated a well deserved resurgence in interest. A UK tour is scheduled for March to promote this and its accompanying releases. TRACKS: ELVIS BELT 1. SLACK TIME 2. MAKE NO BONES 3. TREAT ME BAD 4. PUNISHMENT REWARD 5. RELATIONSHIPS 6. Cud
Leggy Mambo (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 13TH)
PS, UK Following the release of their debut When In Rome, Kill Me and 1990 s Elvis Belt compilation (CDMRED355), Leeds indie heroes CUD set to work on their next album for Imaginary Records. Recorded during the Summer of 1990, Leggy Mambo proved to be a step in all the right directions, cementing the sound developed over their previous releases and capitalizing on the band s pop sensibilities to provide their most immediately accessible collection of songs to date. Produced by XTCs Dave Gregory and released in October 1990, the album spawned the well-received singles Robinson Crusoe and Magic (both of which might have achieved greater success had they been released on a larger label) and generated a huge amount of industry interest, eventually leading to their signing with A & M the following year. This Cherry Red Gold top Copy version of the album features the newly remastered original disc, as well as a collection of demos and alternate versions, all of which have been hand picked by the band themselves. This release (along with two more Cherry Red CUD Reissues) comes hot on the tails of 2006 s Rich and Strange The Anthology compilation and 2007's well received reissues of two more of the band's albums, all of which reminded the world just how great this band were and generated a well deserved resurgence in interest. A UK tour is scheduled for March to promote this and it's accompanying releases. TRACKS: 1. NOW! 2. HEART 3. HEY, BOOTS 4. LOVE IN A HOLLOW TREE 5. LOVE MANDARIN 6. NOT EXACTLY D.L.E.R.C. 7. Cud
Showbiz (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 13TH)
PS, UK Having departed the independent world and signed with A&M in 1991, CUD proceeded to pursue the commercial success their previous releases had hinted at with 1992's Asquarius. Following this, their first hit album, proved to be the band s longest break between releases (largely the result of some inter-label disharmony), but they eventually emerged in 1994 with Showbiz. Recorded primarily in Scotland (at a studio owned by Fish of Marillion fame, no less), this record saw their sound mature and showcased a broader range of songwriting styles than previous efforts. It was well received on its release in April 1994, garnering favorable reviews, and spawned two UK hit singles in Neurotica and One Giant Love. Sadly, though, the album proved to be the band's last officially released effort as the pressures of life on a major and all that it entails took their toll on the band. This remastered version also includes a number of B-Sides from the album's single releases, as well as some unreleased out-takes and demo versions, including material intended for their next album, which hasn't seen the light of day before now. This release (along with two more Cherry Red CUD Reissues) comes hot on the tails of 2006's Rich and Strange The Anthology compilation and 2007's well received re-issues of two more of the band's albums, all of which reminded the world just how great this band were. A UK tour is also scheduled for March to promote this and it's accompanying releases. TRACKS: 1. SOMEBODY SNATCHED MY ACTION 2. ESP 3. WAVING AND DROWNING 4. STICKS AND STONES 5. MYSTERY DEEPENS 6. Dead Man
Euphoria (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 13TH)
PS, US Dead Man mine the birth of stoner rock, from the Grateful Dead to Iron Butterfly, trippy and heavy in qual doses, and now they've signed to Meteor City... Euphoria is much darker and heavier than their debut self-titled album while maintaining a thoroughly vintage vibe. There are bluesy up-tempo rockers alongside melodic folk-pop masterpieces and an unexpected turn into dark and psyched-out heavy rock. While their debut Self Titled album made a huge impact on the stoner/prog rock fanatics, Euphoria will establish Dead Man with cult-status like their contemporaries Witchcraft and Black Mountain have achieved.

Desolation Wilderness
Until Forever (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 20TH)
PS, US DESOLATION WILDERNESS is the primary musical project of Nicolaas Zwart. "Until Forever" was written, played, and recorded by Nic in Summer of 2007, at DUB NARCOTIC STUDIO in Olympia, Washington; during the late night sessions for his self- released full-length album "Hey Someone". Nic played almost all the instruments including the vibraphone, clarinet, glockenspiel, guitar, computer, and synthesizer. On "4/4 Love Song" he enlisted his friends Andrew Dorsett and Adam Oelsner to play Hammond Organ and Accordion, respectively. "Goodbye Summer Girl" is the end of a story. Saying a sudden goodbye to someone new to you who you were in love with, and seeing her disappear out of the rear view mirror of your car as you drive away; getting lost in the shimmering heat of a California summer day. "Gloria" and "4/4 Love Song" have no words, but they capture a mood you can get when watching fireworks over a lake during twilight on the Fourth of July: everything you see and do is imbued with the magic of fate and destiny.

Explorers Club, The
Freedom Wind (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 20TH)
PS, US Great indie rock bands have long made a habit of recasting the music of our parents' youth. Turn on Dr. Dog, Olivia Tremor Control, or the Black Angels for just a few examples of bands who make glorious new music in classic molds. Now take the idea a step further. Take the homage just far enough that you can imagine yourself experiencing, say, THE BEACH BOYS in their prime, but with fresh songs not tempered by a generation of Sweatin' to the Oldies. This is elation without irony. This is THE EXPLORERS CLUB'S debut album, "Freedom Wind." The Beach Boys are the obvious touchstone, but dig a bit deeper and you'll hear flourishes of Paul McCartney, the Byrds, Emitt Rhodes, ELO and doo-wop. Embracing a pop blueprint from a time when great songs were played on the radio and everybody loved them all, the Explorers Club has recorded the sweetest pop record you are likely to hear this year. The Explorers Club are doing for the summer beach song what Amy Winehouse has done for R&B or Sharon Jones for funk and soul, what Antibalas have done for Afro-beat. They're reclaiming the classics as their own, injecting them with life, and making music that that transcends any era. This is how pop music is supposed to sound. Prepare yourself. "Freedom Wind" is the soundtrack to the summer of 2008.

PS, US Limited Edition of 700 hand-numbered, die cut. Zachary Okun & Raj Gadhia met in a quiet summer of college unemployment. Raj recognized Zach as the guy in the back of the dusty university anthropology lab who diligently slept through monkey documentaries, waking
from deep sleep only to angrily protest discernable differences in the skull specimens forced upon the class every week. In this manner things came to a head and they were graduated, just as they decided to have a good run at actually thinking. Reeling in denial, the two began recording together in 2002. Yo Recuerdo is dreamier, closer to the sounds of Guthrie and Budd, but retaining the minimal electronic feel Fax is known for. And for those missing Fax dancier techno moments, there is a remix of one of the most memorable tracks on the album "Cuarto Para Tres". Album mastered by Fernando Corona (Murcof) with guest vocals by Florencia Ruiz and Uriel Villalobos (Perdutto). TRACKLISTING: 1. Intro 2. Cuarto Para Tres 3. Concreto 4. Cielo Rojo 5. Rota 6.
