Parasol New Arrivals • March 06, 2007

Hello friends,

We’re really excited to announce that we are stocking hand picked titles from the ultra-cool RPM label! They have consistently put out stellar re-issues, so do yourself a favor and checkout some of the titles listed below, in the update.

In other news, I finally got my grubby little paws on an LP copy of Midlake’s “Trials of Van Occupanther” courtesy of Ebay but unfortunately, it was quite the pricey little item. And as my luck would have it, it will probably be back in print by the time the post person delivers it to me. But hey, what are you going to do?

All right then. Get comfortable, and get ready to visit the Parasol site because there are so many great new releases that you’ll be beside yourself.

For those about to order, we salute you,

Roy & Paul

Perishers "Let There Be Morning" CD $13.00 (Nettwerk)
The Swedish band's American debut, Let There Be Morning, is a blend of emotional wandering, poetic insight and stark, yet inspirational surroundings. As equally seductive as their acclaimed debut you will rarely hear music as exquisite and as heartbreaking as The Perishers´& Seductive 70s pop delicacies, ultra-lush arrangements, and Ola's demonstrative vocals make for an alluring collection of songs, equal parts rootsy Arctic Circle romancing and glimmering, ghostly baroque-pop brilliance& The lyrics describe love and friendships lined with betrayal, loneliness and the fear of being abandoned. Ola's deep rich voice reassuring you that there is still a certain joy within all this melancholy. For fans of Starlet, Ronderlin, Travis, Kevin Tihista, The Blessed Light, Todd Rundgren, The Doves, Jeff Buckley, and The Tindersticks.

Moonbabies "War On Sound" [2007, 3-song import single] CD5 $2.00 (Startracks)
The Concretes "Kids EP" CD5 $6.00 (Licking Fingers)

We got a two-fer this week, advance EP teasers from two of Sweden's finest pop acts, The Concretes and The Moonbabies!
Moonbabies' new album, Moonbabies At The Ballroom, will be released by our own Hidden Agenda label in May (we'll offer it to you early, in April, of course), but we've got a stack of their import three-song single from their new Swedish label Startracks to whet your appetite. Meanwhile, on the other side of town... Sure, The Concretes are minus vocalist Victoria B, but that hasn't stopped them from putting together a new album of orchestral girl-group orchestral folktronica, sonic enchantment that sounds a bit like Heikki and El Perro Del Mar, and not as sleepy as their last outing. The new four-song EP on their label Licking Fingers features "Kids" (from the upcoming album Hey Trouble, due pretty soon) plus three exclusive non-album b-sides. Sound samples for both titles on the front page later this week. Check out more new Swedish/Scandinavian/Nordic music here.

+/- (Plus/Minus) vs. Bloodthristy Butchers
Split
PS, US +/- specializes in dynamic, loud, Radiohead-ish indie-rock & simultaneously laptop-pop. Experimentation with interesting time signatures & negative space within a hooky hard pop structure. Here, they take on three Bloodthirsty Butchers songs & make them their own. BB was formed in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan in 1987. With their ultra loud almost emo, heavy alterna-rock, transparent & melodious sounds, they are now one of the best band that Japan can boast to the world. The two bands became fast friends while touring Japan & decided to record this split EP. Each band covers three of the others songs. Artwork by famous Japanese illustrator Yoshitomo Nara. Enhanced with live video footage of both bands on stage in Japan.

31Knots
The Days and Nights of Everything Anywhere
PS, US The best music is always truly indefinable. Words can't truly describe Tom Waits'caterwaul the same way they can't explain what it feels like to experience thedeafening volume of a J. Mascis guitar solo. Portland, Oregon's prolific 31Knots have described their sound as "post-apocalyptic Vaudevillian punk," and whilethat's an apt description, it doesn't begin to express the level of demented-popbrilliance on the band's latest full-length, The Days and Nights of EverythingAnywhere. Thanks to an expert mixing job by Deerhoof's Greg Saunier and engineering byJay Pellicci (Deerhoof engineer), 31Knots have transformed their musical landscape into a skewed fantasy world located somewhere between Alice In Wonderlandand Cursive's Happy Hollow.

PS, US Building from the revolutionary blueprint of afrobeat, the dozen-strong members of Brooklyn's Antibalas weave Latin, jazz, funk, and horn-laden soul into a blend that's both polyrhythmic and political, independent and infectious. Produced by John McEntire (Stereolab, Tortoise, Sea and Cake, Tom Ze) who has upped the harmonic density in the band's sound, creating a rich tapestry of harmelodic color that owes as much to Mingus and Coltrane and Can as it does to Fela Kuti.

Apostle of Hustle
National Anthem of Nowhere
PS, CANADA Andrew Whiteman (BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE) describes the album as follows: Its a long Hitchcockian zoom-in, the omniscient clouds part, the sleazy waterfront scene is set... Everyone who feels theys they have no voice or cant be heard, they are suddenly united. They meet strangers in nowhere places & will never forget those meetings. They wander out into the suburban, in-between zones & there are welcomed.

Baikal
S/T
PS, US New burner from BARDO POND brothers John & Michael Gibbons along with fellow members Clint Takeda & Jason Kourkonis. This time they ventured down the route of heavy free-improvisation & a Last Exit style hard rock approach coupled with a hard psych bend. With two tracks each weighing in at over 30 minutes in length it's clear that Baikal is a deep voyage underseas with yet another mindblowing side project.

Banksy
Wall & Piece
PS, US Artistic genius, political activist, painter & decorator, mythic legend or notorious graffiti artist? The work is unmistakable, except may be when it's squatting in the Tate or New York's Metropolitan Museum. Witty & subversive, his stencils show monkeys w/ weapons of mass destruction, policeman w/ smiley faces, rats w/ drills, & umbrellas. His identity remains unknown, but his work is prolific. This feat. old & new work in a fully illustrated color volume.

Bark Haze, The
Total Joke Era
PS, US This exclusive CD release is entirely different from the LP release on Important, which is also untitled. The Bark Haze is primarily a guitar duo of GOWN (nom de plume of one Andrew Macgregor) and Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth, etc). Auxiliary members have been know to include Pete Nolan (Magik Markers, Virgin Eye Blood Brothers, Cops et al). Their name came from a mishearing of the radical early 70s R+B group the Bar-Kays and from that moment the concept of mishearing and allegiance to presenting the mishearing as some open-ended musical course became The Bark Haze's identity. So far all concerts have taken place in Western Massachusetts and once in the confines of Cambridge, MA's Twisted Village record emporium. They anxiously await their debut gig in the UK at the Nightmare Before Christmas event curated by Moore. As the heroic and potentially bonkers Carpenters refrained We've Only Just Begun. Damn straight.

Beaulieau, Emil
Moonlight In Vermont
PS, US Nom de plume of Ron Lessard, long regarded as the most significant arbiter of American noise music. His performances are legendary. W/ bizarre turntable machinations, a sweater-vest, tie & table-lamp his live show is a possessed demon dance to the relationship of normality & not-rightness. This has long been considered one of his most masterful documents. The details are ridiculous in retrospect but his original cover concept of a minimal white lettering on black jacket got skabibbled & resulted in him creating hand-made cut n' paste collage covers. Every LP is it's own work of art & each is stunning.

Big Business

PS, US Big Business feature members of The Melvins. This is their second full-length and it's harder, faster, and catchier than the first, unfurling all the mammoth riffs, furious vocals, and blazing drum work you've come to expect from this LA band. "Some of the most relentless, unyielding, and profound music in heavy metal today" - Thrasher Magazine. "These guys manage to deconstruct, reinvent, and then rebuild the typical noise rock formula" - Chord.

PS, US The legendary Boston guitarist and drummer for Come, Codeine, Pullman, Consonant, Kahoots, and then some, offers up his first solo 7-inch. Coming on the heels of two critically acclaimed solo records, "Incredible Love" and "Red Cities", this EP showcases another side of Chris's work. It features three instrumental outtakes from his score to Leslie McCleave's feature film "Road", as well as a drum-heavy dub mix from a Kahoots recording session. Gorgeous glossy cover images photographed by Brokaw himself and ultra high-quality transparent green vinyl make this a package worthy of wall display.

Burning Star Core
Blood Lightning 2007
PS, US Full of creeping drones, strange mutilated vocal incursions, and compositions full of unidentifiable sounds both acoustic and electronic. Another classic in organized sound and idea from the mind of Mr. C. Spencer Yeh. Blood Lightning is the third in a series of very particular BxC works in theme and scope, beginning with "Three Sisters Who Share an Eye" (No Fun limited LP series), and then "Everyday World of Bodies" LP (Ultra Eczema.) Ideas of drone, 'minimalism,' and human themes are heavily a concern, and unlike other recent and upcoming major works, BxC on these albums is kept intimate, primarily operated by C. Spencer Yeh. Instrumentation includes the current BxC trinity of voice, violin and electronics, surrounded by a whole host of other methods. In recent years the BxC line-up both live and in-studio has included Robert Beatty and Trevor Tremaine (of Kentucky/Michigan-based maniacs Hair Police) and solo sound artist Mike Shiflet- Who all appear on the last track of this release. Burning Star Core began in 1993 in Cincinnati, Ohio where it currently resides with primary member C. Spencer Yeh. It is considered a project and not a pseudonym. Not married to any traditional line-up, method or sound, Yeh's eclecticism separates him from his peers. BxC will be appearing live throughout the first half of 2007, including a tour of US and Canada with Carlos Giffoni and Prurient, a weekend of festivals in Germany, a collaborative appearance with Zaimph at No Fun Fest 2007, and other individual events.

Castanets/Dirty Projectors
Unusual Animals, Vol. 2
PS, US Volume 2 of ASTHMATIC KITTY's Unusual Animals limited edition vinyl series finds Brooklyn residents CASTANETS and DIRTY PROJECTORS splitting sides. Castanets offer up "BlackWater," a bloody and muddy dubbed-out blues track, penned while on their epic and catastrophic sailboat tour with Jana Hunter and Peter & the Wolf in the Summer of 2006, and recorded upon the first day of final harbor. After a deep idiosyncratic investigation of electronic music and classical orchestration on "The Getty Address" and the "New Attitude" EP, Dirty Projector's DAVE LONGSTRETH turns to the live band as his compositional tool with the nine-minute epic "Silence in the Lands."

Coltrane, John
Giant Steps (Deluxe Edition)
PS, US Personnel: John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Tommy Flanagan, Wynton Kelly, Cedar Walton (piano); Paul Chambers (bass); Art Taylor, Lex Humphries, Jimmy Cobb (drums). Recorded at Atlantic Studios, New York, New York on April 1, May 4 and December 2, 1959. Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff. John Coltrane's maiden voyage for Atlantic Records was the fulfillment of all the potential he'd demonstrated with Miles, Monk and on his own Prestige recordings. Recorded in May 1959 (one month after completing Davis' KIND OF BLUE), GIANT STEPS is Coltrane's first recital to feature nothing but his own original compositions, and is the culmination of his obsessive foray into harmony. By taking all of the notes in a chord--and trying to find every possible inversion and relevant substitution--the saxophonist was forced to develop a complex new form of melodic phrasing that enabled him to rhythmically crowd every permutation into a single phrase. The effect is not only technically impressive, but an emotional marvel as well. On equestrian events such as the up-tempo title tune and "Countdown," Coltrane blazes through the changes with a torrential effusion of ideas, each phrase connected to the next with unerring logic and a sublime sense of symmetry. Every note in the lower, middle and upper register of his horn is articulated with power, precision and a variety of expressive timbres. His manipulation of overtones and multiphonics imparts a hair-raising vocal immediacy to his cry, and each solo culminates in a stirring emotional catharsis. This is bebop to the tenth power. But the joy of Coltrane's art is not predicated on its intellectual dexterity. The charming stop-time cadences of "Syeeda's Song Flute" depict an upbeat, child-like disposition, inspiring a particularly celebratory Coltrane solo. The vamping figures of "Cousin Mary" and "Mr. P.C." lead to solos permeated with blues fervor. And of course, there's "Naima" (written for John's first wife), one of the saxophonist's tenderest, most enduring themes, with a melody that floats above Tommy Flanagan's serene chordal colors like a solitary cloud at dusk.

Hee Haw Hell
PS, US The undisputed kings of Southern country punk. This blows any stereotypes about Red staters, punks, & country rockers out of the water w/ the genius of its conceit: it's a country punk opera based on...Dante's Inferno! With spoken parts & good ol' rock-n-roll, they tell the story of Donkey's tour of Hell (populated by ghosts of Lynrd Skynrd and hippie jam bands) with Ol' Virg. Davis, Ben/Des Ark
Battle of the Beards
PS, US The slow builds & soft confessionals of AIMEE ARGOTE's (DES ARK) tracks play perfect counterpoint to DAVIS' pulsing songcraft. Themes weave in & out of infidelity, botched love affairs, & late night rolls in the hay. She belts wherein he whispers, a single piano or acoustic guitar is butted up against a lush orchestra, & by the last note of these 12 tracks you begin to realize the potential of alliance & the unspoken compliments of friendship.

Dawn of Man
In the Bronze Age
PS, US Brian Clancy (BLUETIP) has been grinding his teeth on his fretboard since the old Balt./DC basement punk days where he met producer David Sitek (TVOTR). Destroy All Dreamers
Glare/Halo EP
PS, US 180g BLACK VINYL 12". Destroyalldreamers captivated us to no end with their gorgeous debut album in 2004 (the year's best shoegaze record, handsdown!) We were ecstatic to have them record a special limited record just for us, and we are quite excited to present it to you. LIMITED to 100 red vinyl copies (mailorder-direct only), and 200 black vinyl copies, all pressed on heavy audiophile-quality 180-gram virgin vinyl. Housed in a gorgeous die-cut jacket in the Claire's Echo series by Aaron Winters, with a slip-in full color heavy card cover image, backed with a beautiful close-up shot of a guitar in b&w. Destroyalldreamers does destroy indeed, with their beautiful and intense sonic landscapes. The instrumental outfit from Montreal keeps you on the edge of your seat as they weave through tapestries of billowing, effected guitars to create massive layers of beauty and noise. Fans of Slowdive, Explosions in the Sky, Paik, etc. definitely fall in love with Destroyalldreamers the moment they hear them. The EP is kicked off with the incredible "Her Brother Played the Riot" - a monumental side-long track eclipsing 20 minutes that had to broken into 3-parts on the forthcoming album. Here it appears on vinyl exclusively. On the flip, we are treated to three shorter but equally powerful tracks: Dead on Arrival (100% exclusive to this release), A Summer Without You (another taster from the forthcoming album on WAMR), and A La Guerre Comme A La Mer (another 100% exclusive track that will not appear elsewhere).

DJ Hidden
After Before
PS, GERMANY The vinyl companion to the CD "The Later After" (adn73), DJ Hidden's "After Before" gathers on a 12" two of the most club-oriented tracks from the album. A deadly tool for any DJ and a sign of many packed dancefloors, these two loud, slowly building, insidious and agile tracks demonstrate DJ Hidden's ability at twisting the very roots of drum'n'bass and fusing them with his own high-fi production and melodic skills. Active since the mid-90s, Noel Wessels has over the years become an essential actor of the Dutch electronic music scene. Best known for his productions and shows under the DJ Hidden moniker as well as founding member of the gabber unit The Outside Agency, this untiring producer has been active in all genres of electronic musics, signing records and CDs of countless side-projects (along which the very remarked, laid back Semiomine one). Starting in 2000, Noel Wessels's DJ Hidden drum'n'bass-focused act has been taking this scene by storm. A pioneer of the current mixture of hard, dark drum'n'bass and sudden break(core), his records for Outbreak, Evol Intent, Ruff-Teck or Killing Sheep (among others) have quickly become classics for DJ and fans. "After Before" is the vinyl pendant to "The Later After", the long awaited first full length album by DJ Hidden, coming out on Ad Noiseam at the same time as this records. It contains slightly reworked version of two of the album tracks, edited and mastered with DJ and clubs' PA in mind. The two tracks on this well cut, loud 12" are among both the most club-friendly and the hardest of the material written by DJ Hidden, and sees his productions and recording skills take yet one more step forward.

DJ Hidden
The Later After
PS, GERMANY After 25 releases on vinyl over the course of seven years (not counting the ones of his Outside Agency and Semiomime monikers), for such labels as Ruff Teck, Outbreak, Killing Sheep or Sub/Version, here comes finally the first full length album by DJ Hidden. "The Later After" presents a hour long of new material ranging from the hardest and most twisted drum'n'bass to more downtempo, atmospheric tracks. At the same time a long due crowning for this musician and a perfect introduction for people who have been missing out, "The Later After" is the most accomplished and unequalled achievement by this impudently skilful producer. "The Later After" is a wide-ranging display of the various styles that this musician has touched over the years, combined in twelve tracks written specially for this release. "The Later After" could finally not be a DJ Hidden release if there wasn't anything hidden in it. From the complex artwork (designed by DJ Hidden himself) to the flawless and intricate audio productions, this album might turn into a treasure-hunt, are many details, messages and surprises lay there for the attentive listener to find.

Elastik Band, The
S/T
PS, US Known almost exclusively for their extremely politically incorrect 1967 Nuggets cult favorite "Spazz" (track #2), the Elastik Band was actually a highly talented group that could play just about any popular style in vogue during the mid-to-late 60s, much like the Knickerbockers. Thus, at times they sound like the Byrds with vibraphone ("Mixed Emotions," #3), the Mamas & the Papas ("All I Need," #10), the Syndicate of Sound ("Lose Yourself," 19), and even what sounds like a parody of the Zombies ("Fire and Desire," #9). But the group excelled at the 12-string guitar and multipart harmonies of groups like the Byrds and Beau Brummels, as many tracks on the disc attest. They also had a few curiosities besides "Spazz": "Popcorn" (#7) being the closest, though "Mrs. Pig" (#17) would also qualify. The last track is from an Australian radio broadcast in 1968 in which the DJ begins playing the song "Spazz" but cuts it off before completion and calls it "offensive." This disc, released on lead singer David Cortopassi's private label, represents the band's complete output of their own compositions (they also recorded a Jimmy Webb tune at one point), some never before released. Hopefully the release, though belated, will show that the Elastik Band was far more than a novelty one-hit wonder.

First Class, The
Summer Sound Sensations
PS, UK Bob Stanley writes: Beach Baby was possibly the fullest flowering of the John Carter Sound - constantly shape shifting, the harmonies, the strings, and more hooks than any four minute pop single should have by rights. John Peel raved about it in 'Sounds' and it was no.4 in the US in the summer of '74. In Britain it stalled at 11 but felt much bigger- it's been a radio staple since. This studio group, including luminaries such as Tony Burrows, Chas Mills, Spencer James (from the Searchers), and Clare Torry (of Pink Floyd fame), released two LP's and recorded tracks for a third that remained unreleased. All continued in the vein described above of hook laden /harmony driven /string backed perfectly produced pop. All recorded 1974 -1977, plus a bonus track from 1985 when Carter recorded a throw back single for possible release in Holland when Beach Baby became a reissued hit, that totally captures the Beach Baby excitement and gives it the hi-production wall of sound.

"EYES OF LOVE" Recording very much with the spirit of Two-Tone in mind and the energy of early Kinks, this uplifting summer groover is sung by Belle & Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch & Sarah Martin. "IT'S IN THE HEART OF EVERYONE" Simple mathematics with former Lydia Lunch /Swans/Current 93 collaborator Joe Budenholzer with harmonies from Karine Polwart -minus 4 equals 7 indeed. "BOOMERANG" Slight return-the second coming of our man Joseph Budenholzer. "THE CITY OF LIGHT" The Go-Betweens Robert Forster & Grant McLennan do a 'reading' of this miniscule pop gem, 58 seconds of undiluted Pop to spring clean your mind! "NUCLEAR WAR" Members of Sonic Youth (Thurston Moore/Kim Gordon), The Fire Engines (Davy Henderson) and Stooges/Minutemen bass legend (Mike Watt) pay homage to the spirit of jazz giant Sun Ra ,on this one of his minimalist compositions from the 70's.This track also features a rare recording of the 'fu-horn' performed by iconic radio producer Stewart Cruickshank. "SHENANDOAH" This haunting folk song features chilling vocals and waterfall piano by Karine Polwart alongside young Glasgow improv percussionist Alex Neilson on loan from Scatter/Glasgow Improviser's Orchestra. "FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS" This historic track documents a genuine piece of 'instant composing' featuring a live jam across the telephone exchange, Sushil K Dade performs on acoustic guitar in Glasgow whilst Damo Suzuki (Can) listens to the chords 'down the line' from his Cologne HQ and responds with his hauntingly poignant, crackly telephone vocals.

Gants
I Wonder
PS, UK A band from Mississippi who weren't Delta Bluesmen but a white frat-rock group who developed, through the writing of their own leader Sid Herring, into a stirring US pop/rock band. They lasted from 1963-1967 recording 3 albums and 7 singles for Liberty, and "I Wonder" presents the definitive collection from across that catalogue. The band toured the US with The Animals and Dave Clark, then played with homegrown outfits such as Sam The Sham and the Swinging Medallions. They recorded at Muscle Shoals and Nashville, the music beginning with American Mersey Beat and progressing to the kind of harmony pop/rock that was a blend of Paul Revere and the Beatles "Rubber Soul".

PS, UK Limited CDR only release. Over the last four years, Make Mine Music - a collective of musicians and independent label - has established a name for itself for its catalogue of beguiling and varied music, from the wistful nostalgia of July Skies and Epic45 to the ambient dreamscapes of Yellow6 and Portal. Jatun
S/T
PS, US Jatun is Alan Grosvenor (guitar, keys, bass, loops) and Scott Worley (vocals, keys, guitars, laptop). Alan and Scott met in Portland,OR circa '04, and started writing the songs that would slowly form into the mish-mash of cables, circuits, ivory and alcohol known as Jatun. They began recording their self-titled debut album in September 2005, and it's been engineered/mixed by Scott & Alan and mastered by Carl Saff. The first recorded Jatun song was "Ion Crush," which was featured in a Nike SB promo video for the Zoom Tre shoe and is also featured on the Signal Snowboards webpage. The songs "Ghost and Grey", and "The Temptation of Joy" have been used by Norwegian company Helly Hansen, accompanying snowboard and ski team imagery on two videos. Additionaly the video clips are being used on the Helly Hansen website as a part of their HHTV program. Influenced by an expansive range of artists, genres and styles, Alan and Scott have learned to interpret and appreciate sound from a broad perspective. Such open ears have facilitated an understanding of sonic interplay, and acute attention to arrangement and detail. Armed to the teeth with an arsenal of quality, vintage gear and a penchant for capturing the resultant noises, they craft music thoroughly and thoughtfully. Lush, enveloping and hyper-textured, Jatun's songs blanket themselves around your ears and saturate your head with warm and intoxicating, Orange-tinged tones. Jawbone
S/T
PS, UK Jawbone was born from the ashes of The Mirage and Turquoise, two of the UK's greatest cult pop-psych bands (and both recently anthologized on RPM and Rev-Ola respectively) and their lone 1970 album rounds off their stories perfectly. They were thrown together after guitarist Ray Glynn and drummer Dave Hynes decided to re-form The Mirage after a short stint in The Spencer Davis Group came to an end in 1969 (they appear on the excellent "Short Change" single and ill-fated Funky album). Vocalist Pete Hynes and former bassist Dee Murray was swiftly poached for Elton John's band so they recruited keyboard player and former Mirage sidekick/songwriter Kirk Duncan who called up another former colleague, Jeff "Gus" Peters of the recently defunct Turquoise to handle bass duties. Dave Hynes secured the band a deal with Merv Cohn's newly minted Carnaby label and they changed their name to The Portebello (sic) Explosion for a single coupling the dreamy, Beatlesque pop-sike of "We Can Fly" and a tough, hard-edged cover of Bubble Puppy's minor US hit "Hot Smoke And Sassafras". The single went nowhere but album sessions began regardless in late 1969 with the re-recording of three old Mirage tunes - "How's Ya Pa?", "Chicago Cottage" and "Jeremiah Dreams" (mis-titled "Jeremiah's Dream" on the eventual album), a suitably demented re-working of their unreleased 1967 psychedelic opus "Ebeneezer Beaver". When "How's Ya Pa?" was released as a single in early 1970, it was credited to yet another new moniker, Jawbone. Typically for this period, Dave Hynes had become obsessed by The Band and set about remodeling the group in their image. Consequently, titles like "Honeysuckle Redwood Cabin", "Homestead" and "Mister Custer" came thick and fast, bearing the distinct influences of The Band and The Byrds.

Library Tapes
Feelings For Something Lost
PS, UK Second album from the Swedish contemporary classical duo, a year on from their acclaimed debut 'Alone In The Bright Lights Of A Shattered Life'. Once more, sparse, bleak compositions take centre stage on "Feelings For Something Lost", with the piano more prominent and the overall sound more stripped down than was the case with its predecessor; dark atmospherics echoing the work of Rachels, Set Fire To Flames, Sylvain Chauveau et al. Once again the album is the work of David Wenngren and Per Jardsell, with guest appearances from Cecile Schott (COLLEEN) on the stunning "Leaves Abstract In A Village Plunged Into Mourning" and Erik Skovdin (DEAF CENTER) on "Departures (Burning Saints For Your Own Sins)". The album features twelve tracks, recorded between November 2004 and January 2006, all of which have lengthy titles that convey the feeling of the music perfectly.

Library Tapes
Alone in the Bright Lights of a Shattered Life
PS, UK Library Tapes are a Swedish dup whose work echoes the likes of Max Richter, Lunz, Sylvian Chaveau, Rachels and A Silver Mt Zion. Comprised of piano, acoustic/electric guitars, balalaika and the a trusty laptop, 'Alone In The Bright Lights...' seems to exist in a distant tundra, with the listener coaxed into embarking on a hugely rewarding journey. Whilst the stiff melodies of opening composition 'Broken Piano Pt.2' are draftily satisfying, it is '...in a safe place...somewhere near your heart...' that really establishes their sound. Not unlike a William Basinski piece, 'In a safe place...' takes an emotionally wrought piano and allows it to languidly meander over a stirring landscape of half-glimpsed sonic sturctures and soundscapes that can't help but make an emotional impact on this listener. Gorgeous.

London, Julie
Lonely Girl
PS, UK Yes the girl who single handedly launched the Torch Singer genre...and opened the door for every imperfect but sexy vocalist since..... The most remarkable thing about Julie London is remarkable indeed: that she used her erotic persona not so much to interpret songs as to change the nature of them to become something other than when sung by anyone else. She used her breathy, sexy, sultry voice not to sing a version of a song that could compete with someone else's on a scale of good to better to best, but to change it's meaning. This, her second album, carries on from where her first left off...soft eroticism and single entendre...songs of yearning and loneliness in Julie's own bedroom whisper...just try to resist! The acclaim and success enjoyed by our issue of her first album legendary "Julie Is Her Name" tells you all you need to know....what a woman, what a record...I'll go and lie down now... Low Low Low La La La Love Love Love
S/T
PS, US Low Low formed in March 2004 when Kelly Dyson met Natalia Brightmore in the George over a pint, two days after he'd split from his long-time partner and moved from Carlisle to Buxton with a handful of songs. The pair clicked and work began on turning Kelly's rough acoustic songs into rough acoustic songs with a female harmony. The album was quite a sparse thing for the main part, though Ellis Dyson expanded a few tracks with drums and electric guitars. The process from there was pretty quick - the album was polished (to Low Low's standards) within a few months was released on the *Birds and the Rodents Label (UK)*. Through their earnest, stripped-down approach to song writing, Low Low taps into your head and heart before you've even noticed; and by then it's too late to turn back (not that you'd want to anyway). The vulnerability and undeniable necessity of love, loss, heartache and hopefulness abounds in each affected lyric, and is further evoked by every subtle bend and pull. "As acoustic documents of the breakdown of a long-term relationships go, this is up there. Recorded lo-fi style - in a bedroom apparently - this affecting release combines breathless harmonies and fragile tunes to achieve a strange warmth. Also makes Belle & Sebastian sound like Motorhead." - The Crack "Rooted firmly in the world of low/no-fi folk, this is a charming record that recalls the same juxtaposition of fragility and strength of character that suffused the early Elliott Smith albums." - Tangents. For Fans Of: Devendra Banhart, Iron & Wine, Six Organs of Admittance, Songs of Green Pheasant, Nick Drake.

Mandelbrot Set
All Our Actions Are Constantly Repeated
PS, UK Mandelbrot Set is a loud band. They like their drones and their converse-gazing, they like to use sample pedals and to change instruments during sets, but mainly they like to be loud, and they like to do it differently. Formed by Keung, from the ashes of his previous band, Hentai, of whom Drowned In Sound remarked "It's a relief to know that not all angsty teenagers listen to Radiohead and spend the rest of their adolescence trying to emulate Muse. Some of them stick Boards Of Canada stickers on their guitars, acquire DD-5 sample pedals and violin bows, and proceed to work the Mogwai-esque quiet / loud / louder / apocalyptic dynamic till their ears bleed." Mandelbrot Set take their love of all things on the Constellation label, their penchant for electronics, effects pedals and live sampling, their Shellac-esque rhythmic aggression, and combine it all into a wall of noise, melody and epic structure that would make Kevin Shields envious.

Mary Onettes, The
Void
PS, SWEDEN Sweden's finest is back with a three amazing new songs that makes us remember the days of The Smiths - when every song on every single was equally important. "Void" sounds somewhat like a modern version of A-ha dressed in black mixed with early The Jesus and Mary Chain on an arena. The EP contains two brilliant, exclusive tracks that will not appear on the album. Inspired by indie bands from the 80's, a singer sounding like a Swedish relative to Ian McCullough or Bryan Ferry, and the talent to write the most heartfelt, emotional pop songs imaginable The Mary Onettes is a dream come true for any pop lover. McWilliams, David
The Days of David McWilliams
PS, UK An Irish folk rock artist who in 1967 released three albums of his own material on the Major Minor label. An amazing period of productivity matched by the amazing consistency of quality throughout all the material he wrote and recorded. Musically he backed himself on 6 and 12 string guitar with further arrangements and orchestration provided by the then wunderkind producer Mike Leander. The combination of McWilliams heartfelt lyrics and songstyle with Leanders evocative arrangements of the simple melodies still sound bewitching today. 'The Days Of Pearly Spencer' was covered by Marc Almond in the early 90's and 'Three O'Clock Flamingo Street' is another radio favourite. There has only been one other McWilliams compilation, released by EMI when the Almond single was a hit in 1992. That collection has long since been deleted and this RPM collection only repeats four tracks from the EMI set. For McWilliams fans and 60's folk/rock fans the idea is to follow up this present collection with a Volume two later in the year. The RPM collection presents a range of subject matter, some of their time such as Hiroshima and Harlem Lady, others love songs that transcend time. The English had Donovan, the Americans had Dylan, the Irish had McWilliams.

Microphones
Don't Smoke/Get Off The Internet
PS, US It has been a while since the last album or concert by "the MICROPHONES". Lately "MOUNT EERIE" has been taking up that space. Now we have this new miniature record out of nowhere (actually out of Anacortes, Washington, the awkward town up on the edge of Canada where Phil Elverum, the originator of all this music and hubbub, runs the family record label and publisher). These 2 songs are a 2007 modifi cation of punk directness. "Do as I say"-style lyrics and "feel as I feel"-style music. It s quite different from the introspective metaphorical state park parking-lot songs the Microphones have become known for. Over moden grunge, these songs say "There is no God. Deal with yourself. Clean up your mess. Take responsibility."

Ministry of Sound
Midsummer Nights Dreaming/Men from the Ministry
PS, UK Upon its release in 1966, Men from the Ministry received heavy promotion on pirate radio. Disc jockey Kevin McKew was particularly fond of the record and played it five times through on his show, declaring the album "the breakthrough record of 1966." Because McKew had a 2:00 AM slot his promotion did little to help sales. Inspection of the back cover of the LP reveals that the disc jockey had a vested interest in the record; he had written the sleeve note.

Moaners
Blackwing Yalobusha
PS, US North Carolina-based garage-blues duo decided to revisit their Mississippi roots & record their latest album with former Squirrel Nut Zippers founder & producer Jimbo Mathus. Amid the thousand-pound heat the female duo churned out a slow burning collection of songs that chant & spit their way through the spirit world of the old south. The songs tell tall tales of barstool black belts & monkey tongues while tuned-down slide guitar tumbles through the delta landscapes of Faulkner & O'Connor.

Mouthus
Follow This House
PS, US Perhaps appropriately, Follow This House was recorded following a European tour in a state of profound limbic haze and completed and finalized during the unforgettable heat wave of July 2006. These facts make a whole lot of sense since Follow This House sounds like your entire record collection melting in the trunks of a hundred junkyard cars on a hazy, steamy, sweltering hot summer afternoon. Follow This House by Mouthus is a companion piece to their 2005 full length for Important titled The Long Salt. Picking up right where The Long Salt left off, Follow This House is a record chock full of manic bad mood energy, crunching resin-soaked jams and hundred year old instrumentation emerging from the soggy mire only to be slowly pushed back in by poison clouds of delayed-out vocal groan. Mouthus are on a stated mission to incorporate new sounds and new instrumentation into their recordings. Never repeating themselves Follow This House is less fractured and more minimal, embracing the Mouthus sludgefest like a settling foundation.

They experimented w/a system of live sampling & processing of JM's playing on top of a layer of prerecorded sound materials, with the sample triggers being caused by the performance as it happaned. This resulted in a ensemble that is partly responsive & partly autonomous.

My Teenage Stride
Ears Like Golden Bats
PS, UK "Ears Like Golden Bats" is the third album by Brooklyn-based My Teenage Stride and the follow-up to 2005's "Major Major" (Becalmed KLECD 103). The heart of My Teenage Stride is multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter Jedediah Smith. Jed grew up in Massachusetts and at age 14 started playing guitar, soon adding bass, piano and drums to the mix. As soon as he could steal his older brother's Tascam 4-track, he was writing and recording songs as a one-man band, and by age 18 he had compiled several boxes of tapes and had already written 400 songs. Just over a decade later, he's written hundreds more, with no signs of slowing down. Although previous releases were mainly the work of Jed alone in the studio, many tracks on "Ears Like Golden Bats" have been recorded with the help of a stable band. The current My Teenage Stride line-up is Jedediah Smith instruments, vocals), Jenny Logan (bass), Brett Whitmoyer (drums) and Dakkan Abbe (guitar). At just under 40 minutes, "Ears" gathers a collection of captivating guitar pop gems that manage to combine fatalism with not-yetdefeated hope, which seems to be an inherent quality of many of Smith's compositions. The references to Phil Spector, the Jesus & Mary Chain and Television Personalities are still present in well-crafted and immediate tracks like 'We'll Meet At Emily's', 'That Should Stand For Something' and 'Terror Bends'. They're hookladen songs that will have you humming all day long - you might clap your hands or snap your fingers too. Titles such as 'Reversal' or 'Genie Of New Jersey' and 'To Live And Die In The Airport Lounge' expand on those influences, sounding more atmospheric, reminiscent of the Chills and the pop side of John Cale and Brian Eno. They are catchy in a non-obvious way, loose recordings that let space for moods and ideas to bleed through the album, like the apparent dark tone that seems to permeate 'Reception', the jangly 'Heartless & Cruel' or 'Depression Kicks'.

Odawas
Raven and the White Night
PS, US Like watching an avalanche crushing a Bavarian cottage or a man being attacked by a lion, listening to ODAWAS while nestled safely in your phono-womb is an exercise in tuning into sublime frequencies from safe carriage. That huge dial has never made your hands so child-like, that cookie jar so high. Odawas skirt the cliff's edge like JACK NIETZSCHE hanging Christmas lights on the shark cage, NEIL YOUNG stoking the campfire in his babylon treefort, or a JANDEK aria in a black armband march. Odawas' 2005 debut on JAGJAGUWAR, "The Aether Eater," was a fiery space oddity detailing the brave, the lost, and the maligned. The journey was epic. But the obstinate darkness and disastrous side-effects of space travel are getting lost, and thus turning inward on their follow-up album "Raven And The White Night." This LP package ALSO COMES WITH A GRATIS COMPACT DISC VERSION OF THE ALBUM.

Orb, The
Orbsessions v.1

Now after the resounding success of the earlier limited edition, Malicious Damage is proud to re-release this glorious first volume of Orb treasures from Alex Paterson's spherical archives. Gran Poder
PS, US An amazing debut that is just the first stone of the sonic monolith they're going to build step by step. In this first recording, their musical influences (Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Melvins, Earth, Sleep) get mixed w/ their peculiar perception of the south-spanish religious folklore. The result is a lethargic music with obsesive repetitions, minimalism, feedback, distortion and end-less
drones creating a primitive trance inducing atmosphere. Feat. one exclusive bonus track- cover of Venoms' classic "Genocide."

Parkins, Zeena
Nightmare Alley (reissue)
PS, US Step right up and meet the astounding ZEENA PARKINS, the world's greatest electric harpist. Forget about angelic choirs; Zeena cites Jimi Hendrix as a major inspiration, and her harp work is similarly explosive, often blurring into fuzz-distorted terrain. Parkins is a lightning bolt of a performer, and a much sought after collaborator; she works frequently with SONIC YOUTH'S THURSTON MOORE, LEE RANALDO and JIM O'ROURKE, has performed with COURTNEY LOVE and YOKO ONO, and has recorded extensively and toured the world several times with Icelanic avant-pop diva BJÖRK. Recorded in 1992, "Nightmare Alley" was Zeena's first solo release and the first CD on TABLE OF THE ELEMENTS. A hypnotic classic, it lures the listener into a parallel world of sensations, one that is disorienting and surreal, strangely pleasurable and more than a little dangerous. Step inside if you dare - you won't believe your ears!

Port Royal
Flares
PS, UK The Resonant label's quest to unearth new artists continues with this magnificent, sprawling, widescreen debut from Genoa, Italybased guitar collective Port-Royal. "Flares" is the result of more than two years of home recording, and displays scope and ambition that exudes confidence - almost arrogance - in their own vision and ability. Although "Flares" has much in common with the likes of labelmate Stafraenn Hakon, for example, there's no way you could classify this as simply a post-rock album; Port-Royal utilize understated electronic beats and subtle spoken vocal samples as well as guitars, and have created a body of work with no obvious parallels or comparisons. 'Flares pt.3', track 9 from the album is included on the latest Wire Tapper CD. The Wire Tapper CD is given away free with ALL copies of Wire magazine issue 256 (June 2005). Also featured alongside port-royal are Pajo, Kid606, Juana Molina, Picastro, Junkboy, Ariel Pink etc etc. 20 tracks of new and varied music. Review: "Very much in the Manual school of grand post-rock, Port Royal seem to have a dizzyingly expansive remit that will appeal to anyone bewitched by Sigur Ros, Jonas Munk or even Ulrich Schnauss, fashioning gloriously hued sunset music which positively bursts with aural paroxysms. Encompassing electronica, IDM, post rock and any other stravaig movement you like to mention 'Zoboine' combines the kinetic optimism of Mogwai's 'Rock Action' with Cocteau drums and crackling machine beats into a confection that is neither too sweet nor too bitter. Its just occurred to me yet again what a great label Resonant is and this is a simply fabulous release. Highly Recommended!"

Preston, Billy
Billy's Bag
PS, UK Remember the majestic organ work on The Beatles "Get Back"? That was Billy. Although probably best known through his association with The Beatles, "Billy's Bag" is chance to showcase Mr. Preston as a talent in his own right. Just prior to this release Preston had already made a name for himself as a very fine Piano and Hammond organ player on a number of soul/jazz/r&b albums released in the US . In the UK following tours with Sam Cooke and Little Richard some of Preston's singles made it to these shores and became turn table favourites at the Mod clubs, such as 'In The Midnight Hour' and the self penned title track 'Billy's Bag'.

Prince Valium
Andlaus
PS, UK A debut of sorts on Resonant, from yet another Icelandic artist; Prince Valium put the 'um' in Sk/um, the duo responsible for the fine IDM electronica mini-album "I Thagu Fallsins" in early 2003 (RESCD004), alongside Skurken (the 'sk' half). Working both as a partnership and as individuals since then, "Andlaus" (meaning 'without breath') is the first material from the Sk/um members to see the light of day, so to speak, since the Sk/um release. This sees Valium - 30 year old Thorsteinn Olafsson - take a step back from the Plaid-style playful electronics of old, instead leaning notably towards epic soundscapes utilising both real instruments (guitar being predominant here) and his computer, to create what is ultimately an ambient album in essence. Mostly instrumental - the exception being the breathtaking female vocal-led second track "Crying Hearts " - "Andlaus" is stunning, evocative and overwhelming, with widescreen production that belies its bedroom origins.

Quiet Five, The
When the Morning Sun Dries the Dew
PS, UK The Quiet Five are a mid 60's English Harmony Beat band who had a UU hit with a cover of Simon and Garfunkels 'Homeward Bound'. The band included cult pop luminaries Richard Barnes and Kris Ife, who went on to write with Mr Teenage Opera Mark Wirtz and make an album as Judd for Larry Page, as well as more behind the scenes production work.
The Quiet Five were regulars on the Live circuit and in the studio. They made recordings mostly with producer Ron Richards, plus Alan Moorhouse on their last single Goodnight,Sleep Tight, a proto-pop-psych feel and Brill Bldg.-style record in 1967.

Rameses III
Honey Rose
PS, US Rameses III are architects of the most beautiful swathes of blissful ambience whose releases have previously found homes on labels like Celebrate Psi Phenomenon, Music Fellowship, Scarcelight, MYMWLY, Barl Fire and Type. On "Honey Rose", the group's first release for Important, the South London trio builds a bucolic soundtrack to Jon Spira's mysterious short film "Suityman". Whilst the influence of Bruce Langhorne, Boxhead Ensemble and much of the 4AD roster can be keenly felt on this six song EP, so too can the wondrous drone narratives that are such a feature of Rameses III's previous works. More structured and melodious then much of their output, "Honey Rose" is the perfect plac
