Parasol New Arrivals • February 06, 2007

Hi Friends,

Well, my friend, Rachael and I were extremely excited to go see our favorite band, you guessed it, Midlake on Valentine’s Day at Schuba’s, in Chicago. But as our luck would have it, both shows are completely sold out. So with that said I figured I’d completely exhaust the albums and EPs that we have in the shop, here. To my dismay they keep disappearing and reappearing in the strangest places. For example, my co-worker, Jim, told me that my beloved CD was in plain view but it took me a good few hours to shift my gaze to the ceiling beam where the disc had been carefully nestled. After a couple of nudges with the broomstick the disc fell into my loving arms. Being reunited has never felt so good. Now, I’m trapped in a game of where’s Waldo yet again. It seems that Paul has sent me on yet another scavenger hunt. The CD case is right here, but the disc itself is missing and allegedly in plain sight. I’m going to pass the mic to Paul now as I summon the ghost of Sherlock Holmes.

Howdy folks. In my defense, I still like the “Trials Of Van Occupanther” CD but need a vacation from its brilliance for a day or two and thus the drastic measures. I’ve got an idea, maybe we should talk about another record. We just received the new double disc of “Writer’s Block” by Peter Bjorn And John. The extra disc includes the single version of “Let’s Call It Off” plus several remixes, b-sides and rare tracks. Hope the promo copies arrive soon or we’ll have to buy one for in-store play.

Angie’s always working on adding new stuff to the sale list so visit often or you might miss out on that special item that Google never seems to turn up any hits for.

We gathered in spring,

Black Belt "Two Minutes To Midnight" CD+BONUS CDSINGLE $13.50 (Novoton)
Black Belt traffic in gritty garage-rock heaviosity and dirigible psychedelia, Swedish stonerrock with plenty of muscle, and a righteous late-60s-early-70s vibe, plus frontman Joen Carlstedt sports one of the most majestic afros in Rock! Fans of fellow Scandinavians Elope, Motorpsycho and The Soundtrack of Our Lives (and those bands' shared passion for channelling rock gods of other eras) will find plenty to adore here... If you are into big fuzzy guitars, fringe jackets, overdriven vocals, frayed denim, sweet soul and tons of swagger look no further. CD is packaged in an extremely plush full-color gatefold jacket with an elegant vellum wrap, while inside there's a booklet that folds out in the shape of a cross and receives an official R Rating for full-frontal nudity. Initial orders will also receive a copy of their "Hold On" single (PG-13) as a bonus, single features two awesome songs that don't appear on any album.

Acid King
III
PS, US ILegendary bay area doom band. Finally on vinyl! Produced with the help of San Fransico's legendary engineer Billy Ander-son, this is the album that Lori & Co. were born to make. Filled with thundering low end & fat ass riffs AK-III will redefine the definition of the word heavy for years to come. It?s thick & viscous, pooling together in a meaty muck. AK-III?s one of those albums that refuses to let go of your subconscious.

Aereogramme
My Heart Has a Wish That You Would Not Go
PS, US Their 3rd full-length album is an ambitious, cinematic & beautiful beast. Trading in the sludgey, metallic heaviness that filled half of "Seclusion" for a more serene, pensive feel, this explores the quieter side of the group's musical landscape. RIYL: Isis, Mogwai, Flaming Lips.

Afflicted Man
Complete Recordings
PS, US Too freaked out for punks and too punked out for freaks, STEVE HALL stalked the nascent British Punk/DIY scene under the guise of AFFLICTED (later AFFLICTED MAN) throughout the early '80s to the interest of almost no one. Hiding in plain sight, Hall unleashed a string of 7-inches and LPs that evoked a singular and unique take on the punk sneer made fashionable by the Sex Pistols and their minion. Primitively blending elements of psychedelia and dub over his feral, chainsaw approach, Afflicted Man unleashed a miasma of tripped out, fuzzy aggro thrashers that would eventually climax into a masterpiece of pedal stomping carnage-the unimpeachable Get Stoned Ezy LP-the likes of which are only now being fully digested. Easily one of the UK's strangest and ignored DIY punk bands. This collection includes the entire output; all three mega rare 7-inches plus the hard to find LPs The Afflicted Man's Musical Bag, I'm Off Me 'Head, and the aforementioned Get Stoned Ezy. Complete Recordings is the type of release to make even the most knowledgeable of humbugs sit up and take notice. Essential in every way.

Agust, Daniel
Swallowed a Star
PS, US From the co-founder of GUSGUS is a collection of songs he has pain stakingly crafted, composed & orchestrated over the past couple of years. It reunites him with Bix (who has remixed Madonna, Beck & Sigur Ros). The result is a collection of blissful, mini-symphonies w/ an infectious pop edge. Electronic hisses, fizzes, & squelching bass lines, they've created a rich tapestry of orchestration, eerie bleeps & rousing soulful vocals.

Alkaline Trio
Remains [CD+DVD]
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "If there's something Alkaline Trio loves more than red, black and drinking their way through darkness and heartache, it's recording songs for compilations, B-sides and split albums. So it's only fitting that seven years after their self-titled singles collection, it would be necessary for the Trio to release another album to round various songs up into one tidy package for maximum consumption. In addition to multiple compilation appearances, their half to splits with Hot Water Music and One Man Army are here -- including the excellent cover of the former's "Rooftops" -- along with a few live cuts. Remains is absolutely essential for fans, not just for the completion factor for personal collections, but because most all of the songs here are up there with the band's best. Seriously, this is good stuff. "Hell Yes" leads things off with mischievous defiance; from cuts like "My Standard Break from Life," "Queen of Pain" and "We Can Never Break Up" to additional covers (The Damned's "Wait for the Blackout" and Berlin's "Metro") this record has no time for filler... The DVD includes five music videos ("Stupid Kid," "We've Had Enough," "Time to Waste," "Mercy Me" and "Burn") and random tour footage... Hardly a bunch of tossed away afterthoughts, Remains is an incredibly solid collection of songs that any fan would be foolish to miss. (Corey Apar)

Amnesty
Free Your Mind
PS, US "The 700 West Sessions" Based in Indianapolis in the early 70s, the group released only 2 obscure 45s in their recording career. They had a poltical edge similar to L.A. Carnival & the hardest brass section since The Kashmere Stage Band. While their biting, difficult-to-categorize prog funk/soul/rock could potentially reach far beyond Indianapolis's bounds, the band never found a label to take them to the next level. Obviously influenced by, but by no means simply imitators of, the sound of early Parliament & Funkadelic arguably the most unique funk to originate from Naptown, & some of the best music of its kind.

Arc Lab
No Spectre
PS, US Arc Lab's sophomore release "No Spectre" finds the n5MD imprint returning to its roots. Medard Fischer (a.k.a Arc Lab) uses almost 99.9% the digital realm to create his sonic tapestries. Those familiar with Fischer's music will hear unparalleled growth in his production and songwriting since 2005's "the nineteen floors" (MMBP). Those unfamiliar will take comfort in his musical expressions. "No Spectre" features cascading rhythms reminiscent of some of Telefon Tel Aviv's beat-work, the melodious cadence of early Arovane and some of the warm yet slightly sinister elements of label-mate Proem. It highlights a delicate balance of tension and emotion, harnessing errant melodies, fractured percussion and granular synthesis experiments to make that all-important musical connection with the listener. Human moments made by machines? A human heart succumbing to the synthetic? Or maybe just an artist utilizing some old spectres to make something all his own... tracklisting: I`m All Vectors, Versions, Natch, So Much For No Surprises, The Several Song Dead Days, Miss Wet T-Shirt Vancouver 2006, Plays Tim Arndt, Spectres, The Past!, All Parallels.

Bikeride
The Kiss (ON SALE)
PS, US Praised by Uncut, MOJO, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, CMJ, the L.A. Times, and many other publications, Bikeride pedals along with their fifth long player, The Kiss - their first in over four years. The Kiss takes off where 2002's Morning Macumba last left us, still showcasing Bikeride's knack for adventure and exotica. Just as many of the songs on Morning Macumba, were written abroad in Brazil and Peru, the music on The Kiss was written while traveling around the world. The songs were simmered in indigenous native spices, put through the Bicycle Rider pop filter, and then spit out as only Bikeride can do. But please don't be confused. Bikeride, the band that put red, white, and blue, on the map years before 9/11, remains dedicated to Americana and the everlasting pop song. Listen to the countrified "A Dancer's Feet Are Not So Neat" or the bubblegum pop of "She's Radioactive!" Compared to bands as disparate as The Beatles, Pixies, Beck and Earth Wind & Fire, Bikeride tackles just about every musical genre with fun and precision. The new sound is not just American, but American Gothic. Bikeride has embraced history. No, not the 15+ years they've been around, but the days of yore. Listen to "There's Something Odd About Elizabeth". It's Victorian, spooky, dreamy, and just might make you beseech Bikeride to play your funeral. Listen to "Hole in My Eye". It'll make you swing from a sail, drink Rum, and put on a blouse. (It's that Pirate-y!) Then there's "Podiaphobia"- an epic five minutes of prig-rock set amid maidens and castles- part Monty Python, part Lord of the Rings. Sure to be a Renaissance Fair favorite. Yes, they've gotten darker but they haven't abandoned their sunny California roots. Listen to "Your Lips and You", the first single off The Kiss, and you'll see that Bikeride remains in top-pop-form. It's a Revolver-esque sound collage where East meets West in an explosion of strings and Santoors. Also, check out "The Mystery of Magnet Power" and you'll see how only Bikeride can fuse influences as dissimilar as Bowie and the musical Annie. If you've been hungry for fresh Bikeride, this new record will appease your appetite. It's hard to resist and soft as a Kiss.

Biosphere
Cirque
PS, US REISSUE, originally released in 2000. Quite unlike any other, Geir Jenssen's so-called "Arctic Sound" transforms the space in which it is played. This music is an intimate reflection of the space & climate of his Arctic base in Tromsö, Norway, but made universal. Adjectives like "glacial" & "remote" do no justice to the intense emotion of the music. Layers of detail reveal themselves as you listen & appreciate the convergences deep w/in the music, between classical & pop, the soundtrack & its voiceover.

Birch Book
Vol 1
PS, US Re-release . Psychedelic folk pilgrim JON MICHAEL B'EIRTH (IN GOWAN RING) marks an evolution in sound away from the overtly psychedelic towards simplier, highly effective, direct song based approach, reflecting the distillations of a perennial rambler, reckoning a road less traveled. This is not overly experimental, not droning or psychedelic but it simultaneously brings the older mystic folk into the current & points a new way forward. Cohesive, beautiful & often highly moving.

Collaboration LP
PS, US Dream-team hook-up between legendary Belgian avant/industrial/savant-goof CASSIS CORNUTA-still one of the most singular synthists/conceptualists to come out of the post Nurse bag-and JOHN OLSON and MIKE CONNELLY of WOLF EYES. Housed in a massively ill fold-out six panel cover with art by DENNIS TYFUS and pressed in a one-sided LP with an etching on the B-side, the sonics match the sound of slowly rending circuit boards, cold beams of Euro glare and what sounds like the first drawled chord of "Iron Man" with fluttering electronics that hover in the air with all of the malevolent anti-gravity of leather wings.

Black Belt are purveyors of extra-large 70s stonerrock grooves, and 2MTM was produced by Jari Haapalainen (The Bear Quartet). GROOVE MAGAZINE: "...A mix of fiery seventies hard rock, psyched out mangle and a flirt with groovy soul that can make your hips pop. But it is the energy that hits me right in my heart. It is dirty like a coal miner, reaks of sweat like a festival fanatic and snorts like a testosteron filled bull. Chose any song you like of the eleven, it doesn't matter. PS, US The follow-up to their smash debut, "Silent Alarm", is every bit as bright, powerful, and catchy, with the addition of more muscle, attitude, depth, and a bit of polish courtesy of their producer, Jacknife Lee (U2, Snow Patrol). Inspired by lead singer Kele Okereke's interest in what he calls "the living noise of a metropolis", this record captures every detail of daily life in a modern city from the ebullient to the mundane. From the quiet desolation of commuting to casual sex, from going out on a Friday night to the long ride home early in the morning, these are songs desperate to understand the meaning that pulses under the moments of our every day.

PS, US This 1970 Asylum album once again available on vinyl. Continuing his jazz explorations, he createdthe most "out" albumofhis career. The 5/4 time signaturetitle track is strikingly weird w/ haunted house pipe organ & 2 faster-paced numbers, the mellow contemplative love song "I Had A Talk With My Woman" & the slightly funky blues-based "Nobody Walkin'," are even fun. PS, US 1st-ever CD reissue of some of the most amazing Turkish music ever recorded: wild, raw & w/ fuzz guitar all over. Bunalim (which means "depression" or "frustration" in Turkish), founded in '69, was one of the most well-known underground groups on the Turkish music scene of the early '70s. This release is a blend of their work from 1970-72, & feat. everything from American-influenced garage to early punk experiments to fuzzed-out psychedelic heavy Eastern drone, incl. a cover of Iron Butterfly's "Get Out Of My Life, Woman" sung in Turkish.

On this release, he delivers synth-laden, post-techno hooks and indie-pop moves provided by underground heroes, Boom Bip and DJ Nobody. Ceephax
Volume One
PS, US AKA Andy Jenkinson. This encompasses an old school acid sensibility crossed w/ the energy & innovation of the famous "Universal Indicator" acid series, plus a melodic & moody experimental side that is revealed in his mellower moments. The style is techno/acid/house/drum & bass/experimental/ambient... basically all electronic/dance styles, i.e. braindance. In Jenkinson's hands the sound of the 303 has taken on a new & important role that has surpassed the lame & predictable offerings from the psy-trance & acid techno camps.

Circle
Miljard
PS, FINLAND A new Circle album is always cause for celebration around these parts and this particular one gives us even more reason to get giddy; two cds absolutely bursting with minimal chilly Finnish soundscapes. Yes you heard me right, the kings of the new wave of Finnish heavy metal have thrown down their guitars, kicked aside their Krautrock leanings and picked up the piano to sculpt out a series of horizontally leaning and deeply pensive pieces closer to say Willam Basinski or Deaf Center than Neu! or Can. Conjuring up perfectly the icy Northern European landscapes of their homeland, the band dispense with riffs altogether in favour of looping textures and haunting field recordings. The first disc, across its one hour duration explores quite magnificently the piano, with compositions and improvisations edging on the subtlety of Goldmund's 'Corduroy Road', yet adding layer upon layer of haunting drone and worrying atmospherics giving the tracks a great weight. In fact there's much in common with Angelo Badalamenti's 'Mulholland Drive' score, or even the classic soundwork on David Lynch's similarly gloomy 'Eraserhead', it's a common reference to say that something is Lynchian, but Circle manage to share a common vision with Lynch here, managing to achieve darkness without being camp and a dense atmosphere without breaching on the industrial. This is only further confirmed when you reach disc two, the most powerful of the two parts, which uses what sounds like church bells and crackling old records to push the atmosphere level to 11. Parts of the disc even lean toward the classic work of pianist Harold Budd, or even Vangelis's seminal crackly gem 'Memories of Green' from the Blade Runner soundtrack. By the time you reach the final track, the 22 minute long shimmering masterpiece 'Viitane', you will have probably ordered the band's entire back catalogue; 'Miljard' is a bold and intense statement from one of the world's most interesting acts, and should hopefully win them an even more sizable fanbase. It seems like they can master every style they approach so here's to another 20 years. Incredible stuff...

Circle
Tulikoira
PS, US "The fold out of the CD reveals the large letters NWOFHM, a Finnish pisstake on the semi obscure slogan New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, and that gives us some clue that CIRCLE have returned to the psycho hardcore of their brilliant 2002 album Sunrise. Finland's finest export have scaled back the krautrock and minimalist sounds in favor of raging lunatic metal punk with indecipherable and insane Finnish vocals, odd sounds, and amazingly tight musicianship, yet what they play never comes close to standard fare. When you listen to Circle it is so apparent this is a band that has something truly special going on, and that they are without a doubt at the height of their powers."

Clouds
Legendary Demo
PS, US Boston's Clouds deliver unbridled action-rock harking back to the mid/late '90s Man's Ruin garage onslaught - which, in turn, owes its collective hearing loss to the likes of the Wipers, Bad Brains, Stooges, and MC5. But there's more. From nasty psych and southern power grooves to "Party Grunge" and sax'd-out dub, this record has it all. Though the band proudly wears their influences on their sleeves, they stand apart because the melting pot sounds unique. They lock and stock their way through manic tracks that meld ZZ Top, the Stooges, Bad Brains, Karp, and Sun Ra.

Cohen, Danny
Shades Of Dorian Gray
PS, US Cohen has been mentioned in the same breath as everyone from Tom Waits, Vic Chesnut, and Jad Fair to Daniel Johnston and the Residents. Danny, a one-time cohort of Captain Beefheart, has stepped up the arrangements on his latest release. Mellotrons, horns, organs, and lap steel adorn these sixteen songs full of riotous images and indelible hooks, sounding positively Wilson-esque. "Shades" is the musical equivalent of an accomplished painting. Equally cerebral and serendipitous, Cohen's third album on Anti is an eclectic song cycle that thrives, informs, and rewards with each successive listen.

Cornsican Paintbrush
Aquarian Hymns
PS, US The latest from the husband-and-wife team of BRAD and EDEN ROSE (Digitalis, NORTH SEA, WAX GHOST, GOLDEN OAKS, etc.) under their CORSICAN PAINTBRUSH moniker. Combining lush instrumentation with clattering percussion and ramshackle beats, Corsican Paintbrush creates a new world of sound out of old world technology. Swerving feverishly between what could easily be chopped up Native American rhythms, sampled Celtic melodies, and space-age funk played on trash heaps, the music of Corsican Paintbrush is actually all of this and none of it. Aquarian Hymns is nine tracks of gorgeously recorded acoustic grace; marked with periodic bursts of lysergic freak-outs, from the sharpened slide guitar strings and tired voice of "Break Through These Branches" to the heavy accordion and woodwind drones of the closing track "Aquarius." Corsican Paintbrush paints an engrossing picture of a folk music never before encountered, and it does so with broad and yet delicate swaths of color and texture.

Der Tpk
Harmful Emotions
PS, US DER TPK is the charming acronym for DER TEENAGE PANZER KORPS, and anyone who can't appreciate the imagery of a pipsqueak quartet of fuzzy, distorted youth, drenched in DIY testosterone, rumbling out from sewers and into the street, just hasn't been vibing on the correct History Channel. Based outta parts unknown (Germany? California? Is there a difference?), Der TPK gnash and gnarl through the charred landscape of the underground like a small battalion of Tiger tanks blasting across the steppes of the Ukraine. Their sonic attack at times recalls the anxious throb of Mars in their prime, but suddenly it shifts and you could swear you were locked in battle with-uh, listening to, that is-the early discordant rumble of Savage Republic. These four youths-BUNKER WOLF, CATHOLIC PAT, BOY TRUE and EDMUND XAVIER-understand they are channeling a vortex of sound, circa '79-'81. That's where they wanna be. The walls shake, the floor crawls. Hey, whatta place! And really, how could comparisons to Mars and Savage Republic ever be a bad thing? Has Siltbreeze ever lied to you? Limited, one-time-only vinyl edition. Previous releases on Skulltones and Pink Skulls (via Jewelled Antler Collective) are out-of-print and mega-rare.

Dragon Or Emperor
S/T
PS, US DRAGON OR EMPEROR is the awesome two-piece lightning-bolt drums & bass assault of AARON MOORE (VOLCANO THE BEAR, SONGS OF NORWAY) on drums/vocals, and STEWART BRACKLEY (BLACK CARROT, Songs of Norway) on bass guitar/vocals. Somewhat akin to a geeky Lightning Bolt in thrift store suits loosening up and playing jazz-metal, with additional manic Pere Ubu-style vocalizations, Moore beats absolute hell out of his drum kit, whilst Brackley embarks on daring fretless excursions to the absolute edges of what constitutes a rhythm. Dragon or Emperor creates an enormous sound that marries their intense mixture of fun and chaos. Aaron and Stewart have been friends for over 20 years, and have previously played together (along with fellow Volcano the Bear member, Nick Mott) in the improv jazz trio, Songs of Norway (Beta Lactum Ring Records). However, it was when Moore heard Brackley sing for the first time-with Black Carrot-that he knew the right thing to do: form a band with him, and explore his new found voice.

Early Years, The
S-T
PS, UK The chilling, psychedelia-drenched self-titled debut from this UK band is a dense mix of the trio's influences: Spiritualized, Mogwai, Television, Neu, and Tortoise. A sound that lies somewhere between their joint love for ambient noise, motorik beats, drones, feedback, harmony, and melody. They've been a fixture of late night MTV2 rotation, and recently created the soundtrack for a Nike World Cup commercial. The US version of this album contains a bonus disc with four additional tracks and two videos. "Within ten songs, The Early Years manage to run the gamut of emotional exploration that leaves you elated, desperate, and moved in such ways you had not felt since your own early years. Truly wondrous" - The Fly (UK).

Frank And Walters, The
You Deserve To Be Happy
PS, SPAIN We live in a world that constantly tells us we don't have what we need and we are not who we should be. It's a non-stop unavoidable torrent, of comparatives, negatives and superlatives. "A Renewed Interest In Happiness" by The Frank And Walters, tell us that everything is going to be all right. It is an antidote to the trials and tribulations we all face. Questions and answers beautifully packaged in unforgettably perfect melodies. The early spring of 2006 saw a little town called Ballyvinny make an entry into the indie-pop history book as The Frank And Walters kicked off the sessions that would eventually become their fifth studio album. True as always to their 'Brave Indie Warrior' code, their surroundings came complete with no running water, no heating and no soundproofing. The first ears to hear the record were on the cows that stared curiously in the window of the practice room. The sessions went well and a team was assembled. Dave Couse came on board as the producer (having previously worked on Grand Parade and indeed EP1 back in '91). Richard Rainey signed up to mix some tracks. Paul met sound engineer Kieran Lynch while on a train journey from Dublin to Cork and secured him as the recording engineer for the album. Work began in earnest in May. It quickly became clear that something special was happening. It is probably their finest work.

Gira, Michael
Songs For A Dog
PS, US A collection of solo songs by New York City's prolific MICHAEL GIRA (SWANS, ANGELS OF LIGHT, Young God Records). On Songs for a Dog, Gira has collected ten tracks that catch him in his purest form. Mostly built around his guitar and voice in a home studio environment, the songs here both expose the very kernels from which he usually works from and illustrate only too perfectly how they can function without the layers of sound he's also often fond of exploring. More importantly, these songs capture an artist who seems forever capable of pushing himself into new avenues and whose laurels consistently get cast aside in the process. Imported from the UK. Limited edtion.

Using all analog equipment, they're bringing it back to the era when Giorgio Mororder and Claudio Simonetti ruled the dance world. Greenham, Lily
Lingual Music
PS, US Britain's best known sound poet is Bob Cobbing, but it's hard to come up with a list of other sound poets working in Britain in the '60s and '70s. It's equally difficult to think of any female sound poets working anywhere. LILY GREENHAM was Danish, but spent her childhood in Vienna. After several relocations across Europe she settled in London in 1972 with her British husband (musician and poet Peter Greenham), where she lived until her death in 2001. Nearly all of her own writings and compositions date from after her arrival in London, but prior to her arrival in London she had been involved in two major European art movements. The Wienner Group in the late 1950s and the "Groupe de Recherche d'Art Visuel in 1964. In London she began to record her own text based compositions that used a mixture of sound poetry techniques, electronics and multi-tracking. The term 'lingual music' that she coined for her compositions refers to her technique of using tape loops of text to create complex and dense musical structures. This 2CD set compiles a wide variety of her own work (1968 and 1984), including live solo performances, film soundtrack pieces, as well as many tape pieces.

PS, SWEDEN New album (2006) from Swedish melodic rock bucaneers G&TSS, who hail from Helsingborg. A bit tricky to define because of the various musical influences such as tango, folk, country and pop. Holiday For Strings
S/T
PS, BELGIUM It may sound pretentious to say that CD is one of the most exciting debut releases of this year. But as far as we know it surely is. Think the mad guitars of a clean Sonic Youth mixed with the groove and unlimited beats of an alternative Lee Perry or Animal Collective. Swedish band Holiday for Strings is throwing infinite melodies, humor, tensions and relief like no others ever did before. CD is slowly becoming unforgettable after its first listen. Catchy without being hip, HFS proves through their rhythms, guitars, vocals that groove has its place among alternative post-pop, that funky tunes and beats can be perfectly connected to everlasting guitar riffs. Purely and simply outstanding... Mastered by Harris Newman (Constellation) and designed by Hans Seeger (Pulseprogramming, Tortoise,...). "Swedish connection appears in the form of the fabulously named Holiday for Strings from Stockholm, whose deeply groovy "I got Two Hands" sounds like an unholy alliance between The Monochrome Set and the B52's" John Gill for THE WIRE

Human Eye
Dinosaur Bones + 2
PS, US Following the imminent collapse of Detroit's long-running punk rock killers the Clone Defects, frontman Timmy Vulgar took a little time off before he assembled the world's weirder Human Eye. Putting the "what the fuck are they doing?!?" back in punk rock, Human Eye is a psychedelic and synth-freak out organism with a sneering skeleton that's trapped in a basement covered with Misfits posters and Electric Eels bootleg tapes on the floor. The most punk-rooted of the recent movement of new and thoroughly insane Detroit bands who are drinking spray paint or Sparks (depending on which is cheaper) and making really exciting, really fucked up new sounds. This 7" follows their debut LP on In The Red Records last year and has three songs exclusive to Ypsilanti, including a cover of weirdo forefathers The Urinals. Hyvonen, Frida
Music From The Dance Performance 'Pudel'. (ON SALE)
PS, SWEDEN Parasol fave backed by a small symphony! Sweden's Frida Hyvönen has been without a home for nearly a year. She got bored and restless in her apartment in Southern Stockholm and gave up her lease. Since then she has been travelling and touring all over Europe and the US (her debut was released this past Autumn via Secretly Canadian). Playing shows, visiting friends, writing new songs... She has also found the time to record a new album - Frida Hyvönen Gives You: Music From The Dance Performance 'Pudel'. It's the first release in her experimental 'Frida Hyvönen Gives You'-series in which she intends to put out whatever she feels like, be it instrumental music, spoken word or even "a new, very foul language", as she herself puts it.

The music on this album was originally written by Frida for the dance performance Pudel, directed by choreographer Dorte Olsen. In September she recorded the songs together with a small orchestra - some horns, a small choir and a string quartet - in collaboration with producer and string arranger Jon Bergström. The recordings take the music way beyond being the soundtrack to a dance performance. Just listen to 'Fall Is My Lover' or 'See How I Came Into Town' or any of these numbers. Heartbreaking songs, boldly arranged, beautifully played and with Frida's exceptional voice at their core.

Ideal Free Distribution
S/T
PS, US Inside your raincoat you find a plastic pocketwatch. It is chiming. Now is the time for the Ideal Free Distribution. The makings of the Ideal Free Distribution came together in 1997 when Eric Griffy, Tony Miller, and Craig Morris decided to make some recordings in Eric's bedroom of some of the primitive ramblings trapped in their heads. Often crude and amateurish, the songs nonetheless had a unique sound and vision that encouraged the three to keep it up. Inspired by Scott Walker, Belle and Sebastian, Beach Boys, and the more obscure elements of the psychedelic genre, they pressed on with the creative process. In a few months, the songs became respectable enough to play for others, and good enough to keep the group recording more material. As their maturity as songwriters grew, some of these new songs (about 50/50) were absolutely wonderful. However, since these new recordings were made in the boys' tiny hometown of Benton, Kentucky, they would never see any release beyond that of compilation cassettes passed around to friends and family. The advantage of this obscurity was that the band was able to learn to cull their weaker songs and focus their efforts on tunes that were worthwhile. The culmination of these developments began to appear in 2003 and 2004 as Eric, Tony, and Craig began writing material for their forthcoming single (Saturday Drive/Apples and Oranges) and LP. With a full lineup due to the addition of Joe Drury on keyboard and guitar, Mike Grote on drums, Marci Schneider on mellotron and castinets, Shelly Morris on vocals and percussion, and Samantha Herald on accessory percussion and vocals, Robert Schneider of The Apples in Stereo heard and loved the demos for these new songs, and his enthusiasm has spread throughout the psychedelic underground who happened to hear them. Through Robert, the band found a home in Athens, Georgia's Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records. Mike Turner, head of the label, caught wind of the band via the undeniable enthusiasm that Robert had for the band. RIYL: Apples in Stereo, the Association, Belle & Sebastian.

Immune
Sound Inside
PS, BELGIUM It's always easy to compare a band to another but in this case even if we can feel a lot of influent bands, we can't easily describe the grace and beauty that touch Immune's wonderful official debut Sound Inside. Magnificent guitars, piano melodies, smooth electronics, strings and drums are melted in a thrilling imaginary score for a sad but hopeful world. Some references that are usually mentioned are Mark Hollis, Sigur Ros, Hood, Arab Strap or Elbow. Immune defines a thin line between post-rock and sad post-electronic with its own delicate wave of tenderness that will push you to remind all the souvenirs of your childhood or the smell of winter falling leave in lonesome woods. Simply superb. Immune was founded in 2001, in Lyon (France). "As all the most beautiful stories, Sound Inside never last long enough...but gives itself clues and evidences of eternity". ROCK POST. "Think Hood, think tensions, think wide, think Lali Puna, it's a melancholy that keep us immunized proving that there's more than sound inside, there's also heat" - Eraserhead.

PS, SWEDEN Juvelen is pure pop songs mixed with soul. Songs that will knock you down and drag you up over and over again. Juvelen is Swedish for The Jewel, a cut diamond, smooth surface and sharp edges. Clean and sparkling, or if he can say it himself: "Straight from the dungeons of pop! Born in a Stockholm basement some two years ago, rising from the ruins of compromise and time wasted, Juvelen signaled the start of something funky fresh. Finally the record will be set straight. La Jr
Dos Casas
PS, SPAIN LA JR (previously know, simply, as JR) are back, led as usual by Frank Rudow (also a member of Viva Las Vegas and Manta Ray), Rafa and Borja. Almost three years after their latest release (also titled "La JR"), "Dos Casas" is a work of dark atmospheric lounge, trancey Kraut-Rock groove or anti-jazz-folk, as we like to name it. Less hermetic than their previous albums, less strictly "autistic pop", LA JR could be a blend between Ry Cooder, The Sea and Cake, AR Kane or Sun Ra, and their new 11 songs -all created thru' modest handicraft ingredients-, part of what we think is one of the best European albums of 2007. When writing a music review or in this case a press release, it is difficult not to resort to subjectivity -the me, myself and I syndrome. The reader doesn't give a damn that I woke up a day later feeling like it was Friday when actually it was Thursday, that the sun had skulked away shyly as it had come at dawn or that a spike from my cactus had prickled me reminding me to water it. Having said this, I have not been asked to write about time travel, weather reports or botany. It could mean absolutely everything or absolutely nothing. And it is exactly this everything and nothing that awakens my interest in LA JR. Please excuse the subjectivity. I came across Jr or more specifically a fragment of the track 'Abrir, amar, y dos sonrisas' from the album 127 (1999, Acuarela) two years late. I can't remember if I invented the tag or if I read it in a press release, but whatever the case I associated it and type cast it as Dadaist pop. Speaking of Dadaism, I would like to quote a text in a book by Richard Huelsenbeck that I coincidentally finished today: "Anyone can be a dadaist. Dadaism does not restrict itself to any particular art form. The waiter in the Manhattan Bar who serves a curaçao with one hand whilst scratching his gonorrhoea with the other is a Dadaist. The gentleman dressed in a raincoat that takes off around the world for the seventh time is a Dadaist. A Dadaist should be someone who thoroughly understands that you have the right to ideas only when you apply them to life; the Dadaist is a totally active person who only exists through actions, their only means of knowledge". I'll leave you to make your own conclusions. There is no exact definition for the word 'dada' and there are no exact words to describe the multifariousness of La Jr. Last year, with the release of La Jr (Acuarela) I chose pantheist rock instead of dadaist pop to pigeonhole them (because of 'Las dos en la nave'), but as I'm listening to their recent release 'Dos casas', I am finding it more difficult to sum it up in a nutshell. The cookie jar opens and the sound of 'Lav decoración 1' renders the air, I nod my head, tap my toes and duly change my position although not my perspective as many things remain the same; Frank Rudow is still an outstanding percussionist (that hypnotic softness in 'Un lado útil'), Rafael Martínez's disjointed singing is just as lustful and irreverent ('Mi a Mi' and 'Arrebato') as ever and equally seductive, I'm sure you'll agree. This is most evident in 'Yo voy a cambiar eh!', so much so that it is not necessary to refer to the title to be convinced there's been a change here. 'Pistoleros' is to music what assemblage is to art; an overlaying of diverse, motley materials; it sounds like porcelain, wood, glass and it squeaks even though it doesn't sound like squeaking.

Cruel and boundary less, these Leviathan tracks continue to push the band into the uncharted waters of punishing black metal art. Of particular note is the fact that these Leviathan tracks represent the first time ever that Wrest has played live/acoustic drums on a Leviathan album. Although each Leviathan album released is a credible, important achievement The Blind Wound material is outstandingly dark and impressive. Their is a decidedly more "human" vibe here but fear not its still grim and cold as ever. This material was initially available on a split CD with Sapthuran but now is available on its own on 180-gram virgin vinyl.

Liles, Andrew
New York Doll
PS, US 3rd release is comprised of multiple concert recordings at different locations that were brought home, chopped up & put back together again. Sometimes the emphasis is more the synthesizer/ambient part, sometimes the taped sounds of people talking, girls singing or even a telephone conversation. Still there is a great sense of Nurse w/ Wound but nevertheless has his own identity. His collage work is set against a hybrid of drone related music. Over 90 minutes in this 2CD collection.

Lilja, Tobias
Time is on My Side
PS, US "Time Is on My Side" is Swedish experimental composer Tobias Lilja's second full-length album and first on n5MD. This follow up to his sonic debut "Ex-leper" (nonresponse) has all the controlled visions of decay as its predecessor but with the addition of Tobias' desperate yet controlled vocals. These vocals bring to the fore-front a humanistic layer of melody to the tonal blizzard of Tobias' music yielding new dimensions which are to most, unclassifiable. Said by the artist to be somewhat loosely inspired by some of David Sylvian's recent work, this comparison though is almost a moot point due to Tobias' originality in his instrumental composition and his vocal delivery, melody and cadence. "Time Is on My Side" is truly in a world of its own. A teetering balance of contradictions... Frigid yet in some way invitingly warm, desperate with a false sense of hope, other-worldly yet somehow familiar, this balance is where Tobias Lilja excels and is proof of an artist who has found "his" sound. "Time Is on My Side" is one of those rare works of art that comes along to help you through those dark times when everything seems hopeless...

Loney, Dear
Loney, Noir (ON SALE)
PS, US This multi-instrumentalist Swede builds songs using a modest home studio set-up. As such, he's released four albums on CD-R in the last few years and has managed to sell several thousand of them pretty much on his own. His music has been described as soulful indie folk with a powerful mini
orchestra. Layer upon layer, adding instrumentation and vocals, these songs seem to bloom like time-lapse photography, depicting glimpsed scenes of
modern disaffection and timeless yearning. "Loney, Noir" is at once effervescent and resigned, exhilarating and melancholy, joyous and confessional.

Midlake
Ballon Maker (LIMITED STOCK)
PS, UK Midlake are 5 young ingenious young men hailing from the musically rich town of Denton, Texas. Second single Balloon Maker is a wonderfully eccentric and endearing tale about a small-town balloon maker. Led by melancholy brass, off-kilter keys, and Tim Smith's fragile vocals, this would melt even the hardest of hearts. The (equally eccentric) video for Balloon Maker was directed by Jason Lee (star of Almost Famous, Vanilla Sky etc). Midlake are his favourite band and he kindly gave of his services free of charge. Difficult to pigeonhole, Midlake have crafted a stunning sound that combines bittersweet psychedelic melodies with inspired electronica and warm acoustic sounds, drawing comparisons with the likes of The Flaming Lips and Grandaddy. 'B' sides on the CD single include the 'Balloon Maker' video as well as 3 superb new tracks.

Oram, Daphne
Oramics
PS, US DAPHNE ORAM is best known for her design of her Oramics system, and also for co-founding the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in 1957, but until now the only easily available piece of music by her on CD has been the 8-minute long "Four Aspects." There was also a 7-inch EP from 1962 on HMV, released as part of the Listen, Move and Dance series that was specifically designed to help children dance. Although the short pieces on this record are very basic it could be argued that this is the first ever electronic dance record! Now for the first time is a survey of nearly all the major pieces that she produced since her departure from the BBC in January 1959 until her final tape piece in 1977. The two and a half hours of music on this 2CD set covers the whole range of Oram's post BBC output. All of the music is electronic with some occasional use of real instruments, especially small percussion and piano frame. There is also some use of musique concrte techniques. The works fall roughly into the following categories: works for TV and cinema advertising, film soundtracks, music for theatre productions, installations and exhibitions as well as concert pieces and several studio experiments.

Others, The / Sans / Sungragon
Listen to the Sky: The Complete Recordings 1964-69
PS, UK Listen To The Sky is a fascinating journey through the changing musical landscape of the '60s as realised by a group of young musicians from Richmond, Surrey. Influenced by local heroes The Rolling Stones and The Yardbirds (who wasn't?), they started out as The Others in 1963. Their guitarist had been kicked out of Hampton Grammar School for wearing his hair too long and they were soon signed up by the Bryan Morrison/Jimmy Duncan agency in London, home of The Pretty Things. With their R&B credentials in place, their first single was a respectable reading of the Bo Diddley staple "Oh Yeah" in 1964. Sadly, various band members were pressured into quitting the band and continuing their studies and the band was reborn with a more pronounced Who/pop-art influence, first as The Army, then as Sands. They were managed by the Marquee Organization and enjoyed a residency at the esteemed London venue in late 1966/early 1967 before being snapped up by Brian Epstein and Robert Stigwood at NEMS who put them on stage at his one of their infamous Saville Theatre nights as support to Cream and Edwin Starr. By the time they came to record their next single, Sands had lost band members to the Jeff Beck Group and Procol Harum (then at number one!). Stigwood insisted they record "Mrs Gillespie's Refrigerator", a tune by his new darlings The Bee Gees but the B-side, "Listen To The Sky", is all their own work... with a little help from Holst's "Mars God of War" from The Planet Suite. The track has since become an acknowledged classic of British psychedelic pop, making regular appearances on compilations such as the Nuggets 2 and Mojo magazine's Acid Drops And Space Dust box sets. Following Epstein's death, interest in Sands disappeared and half the band quit, leaving just two members to forge ahead as Sundragon. Signed to MGM and assigned to producer Derek Lawrence, they were convinced to cover The Lemon Pipers' recent US smash "Green Tambourine" as their debut and Sundragon's excellent version became a minor UK hit in 1968. The album that followed features further US covers ("So You Wanna Be A Rock 'n' Roll Star", "Windy") alongside strong psychorientated originals ("Five White Horses", "Look At The Sun", "Peacock Dress") with muscular musical support from the nascent Deep Purple. As was so often the case, neither the album nor the follow-up singles fared very well. A handful of pseudonym singles (High Noon, The Cruisers, McClintock) followed before the close of the decade saw this particular musical storybook close with it. - Features all the original '60s releases by The Others, Sands and Sundragon! - First time on CD for almost all of these 23 tracks! - Includes four previously unreleased bonus tracks! - Features R&B belter "Oh Yeah", psych-pop classic "Listen To The Sky", soft-pop favourite "Far Away Mountain" and bona fide UK hit "Green Tambourine"! - In-depth liner notes by Stefan Granados featuring all-new interview material with original band members! - Remastered in the usual astounding Rev-Ola style! - A must for all fans of British '60s pop, psych, soft-pop, R&B, blue-eyed soul and even Deep Purple!

Saradon
The Completist's Library
PS, US Sarandon , the English spiky-pop trio formed in late 2003, will be releasing their collection of U.S. and U.K. singles "The Completist's Library" on December 5 via Athens, GA HHBTM Records. It's a 32 track CD & LP compiling the four mini albums released by Sarandon thus far. From the opening song "Pin up" to the closing "Anthony & Simon", all 32 songs work as a whole regardless of the time between recordings as well as personnel changes. Sarandon formed in late 2003 between London and Leicester. Sarandon are a pop band with a short attention span. Head Honcho, Crayola had been in mid-Eighties antiheroes The Colgates. He also ran Thee Foundation for Nothing cassette label and performed in too many bands to recall, including Future Sperm Brasil, Scooter, Pimp, Rocket Jockey & Team Mollusk. He's appeared on over 100 albums and released 25 solo albums. He now runs the kabukikore label. He had the idea for Sarandon swirling round in his head for some time and finally got round to asking his friends Joe and James if they'd help out. Their first release was a 7 track 7" album entitled "The Miniest Album" (Run Out / Banazan). Released in 2004 it quickly gathered some great reviews from all over the world along with a bunch of radio play. Not bad for a band that had only rehearsed twice and played live once before their recording. There's even rumor of possible gigging action for the elusive 3-piece, including the possibility of some shows alongside legendary Japanese nutcases (and fans of the band), Melt Banana. RIYL: Minutemen, Big Flame, C86.

PS, US Lead singer of 90's indie-rock darlings Velocity Girl releases her second solo album, further marking her departure from the guitar-driven noise pop of her former band. Although this record provides love songs in spades reminiscent of Burt Bacharach and Carole King, Shannon doesn't shy away from exploring darker subject matter. Groovy, laid-back beats, warm piano, sweeping strings, and stately horns give these songs a timeless classic pop feel, with the central feature of Sarah's solo work, her voice, showing strong as ever. "Stark and sultry. Shannon's voice, strong and limpid is utterly at ease with a pre-Elvis mode of delivery" - The Washington Post. "Breezy, sunny pop sounds" - NPR, Morning Edition.

Sibiria
Inom Familjen
PS, SWEDEN Sibiria was founded in 2002. The debut album "Norrlands inland" was released in September 2005. Swedish daily "Hallands nyheter" wrote: "The first Swedish band in a long time that deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence as The Smiths". "Inom familjen" is their second album. Although the distances between the four band members and the strong connection to their hometown Östersund is two things which imprints Sibiria, the lyrics range from a variety of subjects, such as love, hate and friendship. But we shouldn't talk so much about the lyrics. It's the music that is important, even if Sibiria sings in their native tongue, which is
