Berry, Chuck
Johnny B. Goode: His Complete '50s Chess Recordings (Limited Edition,
4PC, Remastered)
PS, US John Lennon once said that if you were going to give another
name to rock & roll you might as well call it Chuck Berry -- a
phrase that has been repeated to exhaustion precisely because it is
no exaggeration. More than any other single musician, Berry defined
the sound, style, and attitude of what rock & roll is, pushing
guitars and cars to the forefront, constructing a world of soda shops
and jukeboxes that resided just down the road a piece, finding an
endless world within three chords. Fats Domino may have started the
big wheel rolling, the Everly Brothers invented the power chord, Buddy
Holly married pop with tough rockabilly, Little Richard had the manic
energy, and Elvis Presley broke down the barriers, but Chuck Berry
was the one that created the culture. How he did it is at long last
chronicled in detail on Hip-O Select's Johnny B. Goode: His Complete
'50s Chess Recordings, a four-CD set containing all his singles from
the '50s (which include most of his biggest hits), album tracks, and
rarities, including demos and unreleased recordings. Berry, of course,
had another decade of vital recordings on Chess ahead of him (and
an often-overlooked series of worthy recordings for the label in the
'70s), but within these '50s sessions is where the heart of his legacy
lies, as this is when he created rock & roll out of jump blues,
country boogie, juke joint R&B, Harry Belafonte calypso, and Nat
King Cole crooning. Listening to Johnny B. Goode: His Complete '50s
Chess Recordings is an entirely different experience than The Great
28 or any other hit-heavy compilation where all the brilliant singles
sound so much of a piece that they give the impression that they were
all cut at roughly the same time. Those who learned Berry's music
through these compilations -- and there are generations of listeners
who did -- may be surprised that certain hits like "No Particular
Place to Go" or "You Never Can Tell" arrived well into
the '60s and so are absent here, perhaps jarringly so. What "Johnny
B. Goode" does a superb job of is putting Berry's music in context,
illustrating what happened when by methodically going through every
existing recording in the Chess vaults, including alternate takes,
instrumental jams, a few live tracks, a single by the Ecuadors featuring
Chuck on guitar, and a handful of unreleased cuts. Unlike Hip-O Select's
similar Bo Diddley I'm a Man: The Chess Masters 1955-1958 there are
no major unreleased songs (I'm a Man had Bo's original "Love
Is Strange"); instead, this has a plethora of alternates, all
sequenced in succession, which would give this the feel of an excavation
if the music itself wasn't so energetic and enjoyable. Many of the
alternate takes here have seen the light of day elsewhere, usually
on the Rock 'N' Roll Rarities or Missing Berries series (a heavy dose
of these were also first unearthed on the 1974 LP Chuck Berry's Golden
Decade, Vol. 3), but the value of "Johnny B. Goode" is in
having all of this music in one place -- not just for the sake of
completists who need to have everything an artist cut, but to hear
how the artist developed. That is true here, as Berry gets more confident
as the years pass, but the remarkable thing about "Johnny B.
Goode" is that it shows how Chuck emerged almost fully formed
with "Maybellene" and then continued to mine that same vein
of blues, hillbilly, jazz, and R&B for years. His wit sharpened
quickly, while his music jelled so the boundaries between his influences
evaporated, but the only major introduction to come later in the set
is his signature opening guitar riff, debuting on "Johnny B.
Goode." Indeed, it's a bit of a shock to realize that it took
him so long to nail this defining musical turnaround, but that may
be the biggest revelation on this set. Instead of being filled surprises,
Johnny B. Goode engenders a deeper appreciation of Berry's art. Hearing
the successive alternate takes pile up after each other, it's easy
to appreciate Chuck's verbal dexterity, how he spins from one scenario
to another on "Reelin' and Rockin'," suggesting just how
quickly the words came to him. This, in turn, makes it easier to appreciate
the potency of his poetry, but comparing this rapid-fire humor to
the finely crafted details of "Memphis Tennessee," "Brown
Eyed Handsome Man," and "No Money Down," or the vivid
teenage renderings of "School Day" and "Sweet Little
Sixteen" and "Almost Grown" demonstrate just how carefully
crafted his lyrics were. Similarly, Johnny B. Goode: His Complete
'50s Chess Recordings also offers an understanding of how rich and
varied his musical gifts were. Listening to all the recordings in
a row emphasizes how deep the blues ran within his music, and nowhere
is that truer than on lengthy unreleased instrumentals, simply titled
"Long Fast Jam" and "Long Slow Jam," where Chuck,
longtime pianist Johnnie Johnson, bassist Willie Dixon, and drummer
Jasper Thomas lay back and play for over 11 minutes for each cut.
As Berry's brevity always seemed key to his brilliance -- his singles
always were succinct, never lasting longer than they should -- it
might seem that such prolonged jams would be flabby, but they're mesmerizing,
particularly in how they showcase Johnson's fluid, rolling piano.
The blues is at the core of Berry's rock & roll and he never abandoned
it, even if he enthusiastically turned it inside out. As Johnny B.
Goode shows, Berry hit upon his formula early -- the first disc alone
contains "Thirty Days," "You Can't Catch Me,"
"Brown Eyed Handsome Man," "Roll Over Beethoven,"
"Too Much Monkey Business," and "School Day,"
while the second has "Rock & Roll Music," "Sweet
Little Sixteen," "Reelin' and Rockin'," "Johnny
B. Goode," and "Around and Around," classics and standards
one and all -- and he was savvy enough to know not to fix something
that wasn't broken and so he didn't. He continued to refurbish and
ever so slightly expand his formula into the '60s, creating some of
his greatest music in the years to come -- -- and with any luck, Hip-O
Select will document that in future releases -- but Berry's '50s recordings
for Chess prove one of the greatest bursts of creativity in American
music. This is not only the foundation of Chuck's music, but rock
& roll and pop culture of the 20th century, and it's thrilling
to finally have it all as a complete box set. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine,

Cooder, Ry
I, Flathead
PS, US Ry Cooder has always been a musical storyteller, from his self-titled
debut album (which featured both well-known and under-recognized folk,
blues, swing, and jug tunes) to Boomer's Story, his last two offerings
for Nonesuch (Chavez Ravine and My Name Is Buddy), and his many film
scores (including those for The Long Riders, Paris, Texas, Last Man
Standing, Geronimo, and The End of Violence, just to mention a few).
When his contributions as a musicologist, producer, and collaborator
-- such as his contributions to the various Buena Vista Social Club
recordings (including the film score) and his work with V.M. Bhatt,
Pops Staples, Ersi Arvizu, and guitarist Manuel Galbán of Los
Zafiros -- are included, he becomes a genuine mythmaker. I, Flathead
contributes to the weight of Cooder's legend in many ways. First,
there's the title, an obvious nod to the late Isaac Asimov's -I, Robot;
then there's the legend -- the entire story is told in a 100-page,
hardbound novella that accompanies the Deluxe Edition -- about beatnik,
country music nut, and salt-flats racer Kash Buk, his band the Klowns,
the strange and wonderful extraterrestrial visitor called Shakey,
and the Passenger who pursues him. It's even subtitled "The Songs
of Kash Buk and the Klowns." Finally, there's the music; it's
a set of 14 original tunes that employ everything from country rockabilly
to blues; strange, shimmering exotica; and Latin-influenced rock,
swing, and mariachi music. Musically, there isn't anything here you
haven't heard from Cooder before, but it's shaken and stirred differently
and owes a nod or two to Tom Waits' deadpan storytelling manner. This
album doesn't have the futuristic Latin groove of Chavez Ravine or
the traveling dust-bowl balladic country and folk that was on My Name
Is Buddy, but it is simultaneously as welcoming and off-putting as
both those earlier records. The songs can be enjoyed with or without
the novella, as they were meant to stand apart. The story in it is
directly related, but there is a story the recording tells on its
own. The sound of the record is frighteningly crystalline for roots-oriented
music -- the dirty-assed bottleneck slide guitar-fueled "Ridin'
with the Blues," with drummer Jim Keltner and guitarist Rene
Camacho, feels too clean despite its tempo and loose vibe. "Pink-O
Boogie" follows with the same band -- with added percussion from
Joachim Cooder -- but the groove is nastier and dirtier, and feels
like it could have come from the Get Rhythm album in 1987. Near the
end, Jesús Guzmán arranges some crazy string work to
take it out. The rootsy rocker "Waitin' for Some Girl,"
where Cooder plays everything but drums (courtesy of Martin Pradler)
sounds like a lost John Hiatt tune from Ry's Slide Area period (it's
also better than anything that Hiatt has come up with himself in ages).
Old pal Flaco Jiménez lends his accordion to "Filipino
Dancehall Girl," a beautiful norteño tune that is kissed
by cha-cha in Joachim's rhythms. "Spayed Kooley" is, as
one might expect, a humorous Western swing jam, but played by a basic
rock trio. And then there's the beautifully articulated swing ballad
"My Dwarf Is Getting Tired," one of the more beautifully
warm broken love songs Cooder has ever written -- and the string touches
by Guzmán make it a shuffling lounge fave. Ultimately, "quirky"
doesn't begin to describe I, Flathead, but it doesn't have to: this
disc is simultaneously both vintage and futuristic Cooder doing what
he does best, offering listeners ghost traces of the past as they
materialize on the dusty desert horizon like a mirage. ~ Thom Jurek,

PS, US Formed in Scotland (re-located to Amsterdam) the band manages
to take a distinctly US punk sound & re-frame it with a willing

creates a hybrid sound which feels linked somehow to the early 90s

Duke Spirit
Neptune
PS, US Perhaps it shouldn't be surprising that Neptune sounds so much
more polished and cohesive than the Duke Spirit's first album, Cuts
Across the Land. After all, their debut was culled from years' worth
of singles and EPs, while this album was recorded almost three years
after Cuts Across the Land was ready for release. At any rate, it's
a pleasant surprise: on Neptune, the Duke Spirit don't just focus
their music, they expand on it, too. For the album's sessions, the
band reunited with producer Chris Goss, who they worked with on "Mayday,"
their song for UNKLE's 2007 album, War Stories, and it's clear from
the hymn-like opening track, "I Do Believe," that Neptune
boasts more studiocraft than anything the Duke Spirit did before.
Fans of the band's scuzzy, experimental side will miss the rawness
that Cuts Across the Land had in spades, but chances are they won't
miss it for long, because Neptune's songs are just as compelling as
they are polished. "Send a Little Love Token" and "Into
the Fold" show off the band's formidable rock, even if they're
not as serrated as they would've been had they appeared on Cuts Across
the Land, while "The Step and the Walk" shows how the album's
polish sets off Liela Moss' tough but graceful singing. More than
ever, her richly raspy vocals are the band's focal point: she's crisply
self-assured even on the bluest songs, such as the lunging ballad
"Dog Roses," and unsinkable on "This Ship Was Built
to Last," a churning blues-rocker that sways to and fro between
surging brass and slide guitar like a boat caught in a storm. The
other bandmembers stretch to match Moss' newfound versatility, often
with striking and unexpected results. The group's Sonic Youth fetish
resurfaces with "You Really Wake Up the Love in Me," which
ignites the sexy buzz of "Sugar Kane" with more hooks and
passion as Moss wails "You always stir up the sea." Then
they follow that song with the album's biggest surprise, "My
Sunken Treasure," sweetly soulful pop with bouncy pianos straight
out of Motown. For every tempest like "Lassoo" or "Neptune's
Call," there's an unabashedly pretty moment like the almost serene
"Wooden Heart" or "Sovereign," either of which
would have been completely out of place on Cuts Across the Land --
but it's the depth, power, and flair of moves like these that make
Neptune the real introduction to the Duke Spirit. ~ Heather Phares,

result, creating four vignettes of his sterile industrial zones. As

Infinite Body
A Series of False Awakenings
PS, US Kyle Parker is Infinite Body. Like most of California's harsh
noise youth crew (Impregnable, Privy Seals, Pedestrian Deposit), IB
is the polar opposite of Kyle's former project, Gator Surprise. There
is something about the shift from creating unrelenting, emotional
harsh noise to ambient dream-like drones that works perfectly. Infinite
Body's debut CD White Hymn was a masterpiece of light, colorful, but
heavy synthesizer and vocoder pieces. A Series of False Awakenings
shows a seasonal change, with a heavy presence on field recordings:
children in parks, chimes, and the spring ambience of light winds
and birds' songs. These are meshed with synthesizer, vocoder and carefully
strummed guitar pieces, to create an elevated sense of reality: entirely
surreal. Kyle's thoughtful and sincere work is certainly some of the
most well executed around and the upcoming Infinite Body/Emaciator
split LP on Monorail Trespassing will only further solidify this.
In an edition of 300 LPs with pro-printed fold-over sleeves with art

Johansson, Jonathan
En Hand I Himlen
PS, SWEDEN "Yes, there's more than enough room in your life for
another sensitive Swede reviving early-1980s new romantic sounds,
especially if said Swede has heart firmly clasped to sleeve and hand
reaching so valiantly to heaven as Jonathan Johansson. On "En
hand i himlen" (which translates to "A Hand in Heaven"),
the Stockholm-based electronic artist, whose debut is slated for February
on Hybris, harnesses soft vocals and dreamy synths (think A Flock
of Seagulls' "Wishing") to a particularly dramatic electric
drum and a pulsing bassline (think New Order's... any song). The son
of a preacher, Johansson spent three years recording songs in a bunker
to get the right sound. "In hand i himlen" is nothing you'd
call new, but damned if he doesn't make it all sound freshly autumnal,
another ideal song for another overcast day." - Stephen M. Deusner,

Judys, The
Moo [re-issue]
PS, US The original 'Moo' album finally re-issued on CD for the first
time! CD sports seven bonus tracks, mainman David Bean's "Modomusic"
EP. Released almost four years to the day after Washarama and following
an eighteen month hiatus, The Judy's Moo album has a slightly more
progressive sound: richer production values, fuller arrangements and
thicker harmonies. As the band returned to the stage in 1985, this
was the album that showed the band's maturity and development as songwriters
and musicians. The twelve songs on Moo, laced with solid-state irony,
well-placed cynicism and standard issue Judys' wit, show the band
at the peak of their creativity and acted as a springboard for their
live extravaganzas. The album was released with The Moo Tour - a month
of live performances across the state which included giant cereal
boxes, moving conveyer belts of milk cartons, and a dancing cow while
the band donned milkman uniforms. Critically acclaimed and fan-revered,
The Moo Album continues to be a milestone in Texas pop music.

Judys, The
Land Of Plenty [re-issue]
PS, US First ever official release for The Judys last album, recorded
but never released! In 1990, The Judy's set out to record a new album
with a new Judy's sound. Featuring the lineup that had been established
over a number of years the band, including Barbara Donaho (keyboards/guitars),
Lee Malone (bass), and Darwin Keys (drums), set out to explore new
horizons musically and thematically. Land of Plenty injected multi-layered
keyboards and guitars, stacked vocals, a gospel choir, and even a
bit of banjo into the band's palatte and sought to realize Bean's
vision of a new Americana musical landscape. Broad in its scope and
daring in its expansion of the band's definition of itself, Land of
Plenty was shelved when the group disbanded before the CD's release.
While a handful of copies have been given out, this is first time
this long sought-after project has been available to the general public.

Majesty Crush
I Love You In Other Cities: Best of... 1990 - 1995
PS, US Led by the bizarre DAVID STROUGHTER (P.S. I Love You), Majesty
Crush was one of the more obscure but essential shoegazing groups
to rise out of the short-lived U.S. scene in the early '90s. Hailing
from Detroit, Michigan USA, Majesty Crush was comprised of lead singer
David Stroughter, bassist Hobey Echlin, guitarist Michael Segal and
drummer Odell Nails III. While incorporating the same lush, dreamy
sound as other shoegazer acts of the time, it was the lyrics of Majesty
Crush songs that set them apart from all other artists of the genre.
Stroughter's often strange and obsessive lyrics cover such subjects
as stalking Jodie Foster (No. 1 Fan), torture (Boyfriend), a female
cashier at an adult book store (Sunni Pie), actresses (Uma), tennis
stars (Seles) and Italian porn stars (Cicciolina). Majesty Crush released
only one major album, Love 15, in 1993. Among their notable releases
are 1992's No. 1 Fan and 1994's Sans Muscles." The band broke
up in the mid 1990s. Lead singer Stroughter went on to form a similar
outfit called P.S. I Love You and drummer Nails went on to perform
with Astrobrite and Robin Guthrie of the Cocteau Twins.

One More Grain
Scarborough Fair
PS, UK OMG formed in the summer of 2006; with their first album 'Pigeon
English' being released on that bellwether of independent labels Victory
Garden. 'Isle of Grain' followed in January 2008 on White Heat grabbing
album of the week in the Sunday Times (5 out of 5 stars) and the band
needing a wheelbarrow to carry the positive reviews. The single 'Having
a Ball' was unlikely championed by Radio One tosser Zane Lowe. Scarborough
Fair' has the village fair fancifulness of Paul Simon's tinkering
arrangement replaced by a both haunting and decidedly enchanting yet
darker and more forthrightly trippy affair; a mind-warping, dream-like
dub collage. Either a lysergic haven located deep in the mindset of
Sun Ra, or a hazily atmospheric, drugged feel as if It's Immaterial
were produced by Martin Hannett. It's a deeply engaging and crafted
reclaiming of a folk foundation stone. 'Giriama Wedding' another traditional
arrangement but this time a Kenyan wedding song which apparently was
stumbled upon by way of a release on the legendary Nonesuch Explorer
imprint, entitled 'Witchcraft and Ritual Music'. A dizzyingly up-tempo
and frenetic gem that provides for a hot thick stew of wired, squirreling
ska-like brass arrangements, all woven into an acutely vibrant and
weirdly sultry ethnic pop song. If we weren't any the wiser we'd have
hedged our bets by saying it was the Contortions in a grueling stare-down
with Pigbag Edition of 500 on 7" vinyl. For fans of Early Factory

R.E.M.
Accelerate
PS, US For years, R.E.M. promised that their next album would be a
rocker, an oath to fans that perhaps made sense during the early '90s,
when they were exploring the pastoral fields of Out of Time and the
gloomy folk of Automatic for the People, but in the years after Bill
Berry's 1997 departure, the desire of longtime fans for the group
to rock again was merely a code word for the wish that R.E.M. would
sound like a band again. Apart from a few fleeting moments -- "The
Great Beyond," their "Man in the Moon" re-write for
the 1999 Andy Kaufman biopic, Man in the Moon; "Bad Day,"
a mid-'80s outtake revived for a greatest-hits album -- R.E.M. not
only didn't sound like a band, but they seemed at odds with themselves
and their very strengths, culminating in the amorphous, mummified
Around the Sun, a record so polished and overworked it didn't sound
a bit like R.E.M., not even like the art-pop outfit the band turned
into after Berry's retirement. It was a situation so dire that the
band recognized the need for corrective steering, so they stripped
themselves down to bare-bones for 2008's Accelerate. In every way
Accelerate is the opposite of Around the Sun: at 36 minutes, it's
defiantly lean, it's heavy on Peter Buck's guitars and Mike Mills
backing vocals, its songs don't drift, they attack. Even the songs
constructed on acoustics feel like they're rockers, maybe because
they hearken back to the eerie, ramshackle grace of "Swan Swan
H" whose riff echoes through both "Houston" and "Until
the Day Is Done." This is not the only time that R.E.M. deliberately
refers to the past on Accelerate, but reverential self-reference is
the whole idea of this project: they're embracing their past, building
upon the legacy and the very sound of such underground rock landmarks
as Lifes Rich Pageant and Document. Not that this album could be mistaken
for an exhumed classic from the '80s: Michael Stipe's lyrics are forthright
and never elliptical, and the same could be said about the music,
as it's sonically streamlined and precise, hallmarks of a veteran
band. One of the benefits of being veterans is knowing how to create
a record this focused, and Accelerate benefits greatly from its concentrated
blast of guitars, as the brevity of the album makes R.E.M. seem vital
even as they're dredging up the past. By no longer denying the jangle
and pop that provided a foundation for the group's success, they sound
like a band again.
Such praise dangerously threatens to oversell Accelerate, however,
suggesting that the album has either the unearthly mystique of Murmur
or the ragged enthusiasm of Reckoning when it has neither. This is
a careful, studied album from a band that knew they were on the brink
of losing their audience and, worse, their identity. Accelerate finds
R.E.M. attempting to reconnect with their music, with what made them
play rock & roll in the first place, instead of methodically resurrecting
a faded myth. They reconnect handsomely, creating an album the can
stand next to work from their peers, like Dinosaur Jr.'s exceptional
comeback Beyond and Sonic Youth's casually vital Rather Ripped (whose
"Incinerate" reverberates in the dissonant open-ended "Accelerate").
As comebacks go, that's relatively modest, but the very modesty of
Accelerate is what makes it such a successful rebirth as R.E.M. no
longer denies what they were or what they are, and, in doing so, they
offer a glimpse of what they could be once again. ~ Stephen Thomas

Raccoo-oo-oon
S-T
PS, US All things must come to pass, if you love something set it
free, it's better to burn out than fade away, blah blah blah. No platitude
can mask the permanent bummer of a favorite band breaking up in their
prime, and such is the case with Iowa City's most untamed civic treasure,
feral-psych foursome Raccoo-oo-oon, who decided to dissolve this year
after nearly half a decade of radical and galvanizing activity (tapes,
tours, t-shirts, etc). Fortunately they're generous sorts, so their
parting gift to the fans/haters/planet is a vicious, thorny wilderness
of endless, nameless songs heaved across four fried sides of black
vinyl. Crawl a mile in their shoes. As far as R.I.P. band statements
go, this self-titled monster is tough to beat, by far the most ambitious
slabs of sounds the RAC pack has ever put together. Doomed, desperate
prog-rock flailings decay into hollow purgatories of dimly pulsing
ambience, only to re-erupt into pissed percussion firestorms and experimental
electricity. There are a few moments of Behold Secret Kingdom-style
focus, but for the most part the mood remains raw and acidic, four
souls on edge, backs to the crowd, channeling everything they have
left inside. It's deconstruction time again. Nearly 80 minutes of
music, mastered by Pete Swanson, housed in reinforced double LP jackets
with 'Andy/Daren in repose' photo artwork, plus a pro-printed 11x11
insert. Edition of 500.

PS, US Multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer JHEREK BISCHOFF
has had one of the more quietly prolific careers in the last decade
of independent music. He's served as both full-time member and guest
musician/arranger for experimental pop crews The Dead Science, Xiu
Xiu and Parenthetical Girls, composed music for dance and orchestral
performances, and elegantly produced records for many of his talented
friends. His multi-syllabic musical capabilities and voracious attention
to detail have lent all of these projects layers of intricate loveliness
and classical drama, qualities that find full flight on Royals, the
debut release from Bischoff's solo project RIBBONS. For an artist
whose interests and abilities are as varied as Bischoff's, sometimes
the greatest question in making work can be to decide which path to
pursue, but on Royals the answer is simply to allow the path to unfold.

Strawbs
Dragonfly [expanded, remastered re-issue]
PS, Germany Dragonfly was the second album to be released by the Strawbs,
though much other material unissued in the late '60s that preceded
it has since been made available. (In fact, earlier versions of two
of the songs, "I Turned My Face Into the Wind," and "Josephine,
for Better or for Worse," appear on the archival releases Strawberry
Music Sampler, No. 1 and Preserves Uncanned, respectively.) Dragonfly
was also the only LP the band recorded with cellist Claire Deniz in
the lineup. Though an attractive and competent record, it's not as
impressive as their debut. The songs aren't as striking, and the arrangements
-- even with the addition of a fourth full-time member in Deniz --
aren't as effective as the mating of folk-rock, medieval, and classical
music that characterized the best songs on the first album. It's a
more subdued effort, and not as grave in its mood, Deniz's cello doing
much to mellow the sound. Dave Cousins retained his appetite for epics,
though, in the ten-minute "The Vision of the Lady of the Lake,"
which had piano by soon to be Strawb Rick Wakeman. When the fuzz guitar
unexpectedly piles into the mix a few minutes into the track, joined
by strange hissing background noises, it reaches a tense height that
the rest of the record doesn't match, though it's accomplished and
pleasingly introspective dawn of the '70s British folk-rock. [Mercury
UK's 2008 reissue included four bonus tracks.] ~ Richie Unterberger,

Strawbs
S/T [expanded, remastered re-issue]
PS, Germany The Strawbs had done an album with Sandy Denny handling
many of the vocals, and had also done quite a bit of unreleased recordings
(now on the double CD Preserves Uncanned) prior to 1969's Strawbs.
This is still their first proper album, but their wealth of prior
live and studio experience most likely helped make it sound more confident
and fully formed than many a debut effort. The group distinguished
itself among the burgeoning school of British folk-rockers by delivering
bittersweet folk-rock with a storytelling flavor. Dave Cousins' songwriting
was on the sober and occasionally over-earnest side, but nonetheless
the record was strong and alluring enough to immediately establish
the Strawbs as one of the better first-generation U.K. folk-rock outfits.
Some of these songs had been around for a while, as the presence of
some of them on Preserves Uncanned and Sandy Denny & the Strawbs
attests. However, the group took big strides from bare-bones folk-rock
in the studio by dressing these in arrangements -- sometimes with
light recorder, choral backup vocals, and orchestration -- that gave
the Elizabethan melodies a pastoral, quasi-classical feel at times,
without losing sight of an acoustic base. "The Man Who Called
Himself Jesus" and "Where Is This Dream of Your Youth"
are among their best and most ambitious songs, and even if the compositions
can sometimes take themselves too seriously, the music's never less
than respectable. [Mercury UK's 2008 reissue included four bonus tracks.]

Verlaine, Tom
Dreamtime
PS, US 2008 Re-Issue Tom Verlaine's second album (originally on the
Warner Brothers label) as a solo artist after disbanding Television,
is not groundbreaking or innovative as much as it is consistent. The
post-punk early '80s spawned only a handful of bands that lasted more
than a few years, but Verlaine in his time was one of the more distinctive
voices that did not depend on hitmaking status. Verlaine, David Byrne
with Talking Heads and Dave Thomas with Pere Ubu perfected the non-plussed,
upper octave, pained and tortured artistic style that identified the
New York CBGB's no-wave crowd of rock singers. What is distinctive
about Dreamtime, aside from its thick guitar fortifications, firm
stance, and unwillingness to modify a sound he believed in, are the
issues surrounding the making of these recordings. The first session
was marred by the usage of poor quality reel-to-reel tapes, barely
yielding only half an album. Other songs had to be re-recorded with
different players, due to the original band's unavailability. There's
also a strong connection with Patti Smith, who Verlaine toured with
when leading Television. First session bassist Fred Smith, also from
the original Television group, keyboardist Bruce Brody, and drummer
throughout, Jay Dee Daugherty, are major contributors to the uniform
texture of the tunes. A resultant basic yet visceral sound stripped
of bells and whistles gets to the heart of the uncomplicated rock
sound of the day, expressing a young man blues stilted by a changing
world. It's hard to pin down a "hit" track," but several
rank as distinctive. "Without a Word" is molded in the classic
Television style, with repeat guitar lines from Verlaine and Ritchie
Fliegler, "There's a Reason" is self-explanatory and prototypical,
while "Fragile" revises Byrne's distant vocal foresight,
with Verlaine claiming someone "stole my secret," and further
adds the repeat guitar hooks. "Penetration" is likely the
rave fave, at once propelled, strutting, and plodding with the sparest
of diffuse guitar, and inferences -- sexual or otherwise -- galore.
"Always" sports the kind of cooled, ambiguous message under
no frills rock & roll, with Verlaine exclaiming he has a clue
on "the best kept secret in town." Then there's the effeminate
singing of "Down on the Farm," evocative of Dave Thomas
and his stressed out style, the slow funky R&B elements of "Mary
Marie" enhanced by the organ work of Bruce Brody, and a choogling
Creedence Clearwater Revival ramble during the mainly instrumental
jam "The Blue Robe." Perhaps the most advanced track, "A
Future in Noise" epitomizes the disarmed CBGB's vibe with slightly
built intensity, resolutely controlled. Not so much a set of tidy,
trimmed concepts when one listens closely, as it is a vision of an
artist laying it all out from the bottom of his heart. Many would
easily admit Dreamtime is Tom Verlaine's shining hour. ~ Michael G.

Williams, Hank
Unreleased Recordings (3PC, Boxed Set)
PS, US Considering the seismic impact Hank Williams had on country
music, it's remarkable to think that his recording career lasted a
mere six years -- he signed with MGM Records in early 1947, and was
found dead in the back of his Cadillac en route to a gig on the first
day of 1953. Williams was a prolific recording artist during that
period, cutting an impressive 68 singles in addition to appearing
as a regular guest on WSM's weekly Grand Ole Opry broadcast from Nashville
and maintaining a punishing schedule of personal appearances. Given
Williams' overloaded agenda, it's hard to imagine why he'd agree to
also host an early-morning radio show five days a week, but starting
in January 1951, he did just that, performing from 7:15 a.m. to 7:30
a.m. every Monday through Friday on WSM, sponsored by Mother's Best
Flour. The show lasted for 15 weeks, and since Williams was frequently
out on the road and unable to make it into the studio for live broadcasts,
he recorded most of the Mother's Best programs in advance. Thankfully,
a Williams fan at WSM had the presence of mind to save the transcription
discs of the Mother's Best shows when they were in danger of being
thrown away, and after years of legal wrangling over the rights to
the recordings, the Hank Williams estate has finally arranged for
an authorized release of this material. The Unreleased Recordings
is a three-disc set that features 54 songs from the Mother's Best
broadcasts, and for serious Hank Williams fans this collection was
well worth the wait. The quality of the recordings is usually as good
as his studio sessions of the period and often better, with Williams'
vocals frequently sounding stronger and more resonant than on his
singles, and the performances are strong but casual at the same time.
For these shows, Williams and his band the Drifting Cowboys usually
worked out the set lists on the fly, and it's said that the bandmembers
often found themselves playing tunes they'd never formally rehearsed
for the radio audience. But despite all that, the musicians follow
Williams with skill and confidence, and the emotional force of Williams'
vocals is an impressive thing to hear. Though a number of Williams'
greatest hits are on the song list (sometimes before they were recorded
for mass consumption), some of the most remarkable moments come when
he pulls classic country and gospel favorites from the songbook: "On
Top of Old Smokey" and "Cool Water" are given unexpectedly
powerful and dramatic readings; "Cherokee Boogie" and "Tennessee
Border" sound enthusiastic and energetic in the hands of the
Drifting Cowboys; and white gospel classics like "Softly and
Tenderly," "Dust on the Bible," and "I'll Fly
Away" are delivered with genuine fervor, as Williams and his
band join their voices together for some stellar harmonies. Given
how Hank Williams' body of work has been extensively recycled and
repackaged in the 50-plus years since his passing, the discovery of
a cache of unheard Williams sessions would be good news even under
the least favorable circumstances, but The Unreleased Recordings presents
the country legend not only in fine form, but essaying some unexpected
material with heart, soul, and savvy; it won't replace the man's essential
catalog, but it certainly brings a welcome new perspective to his
music as well as his influences. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide

PS, SPAIN The long-awaited comeback by The Yellow Melodies, from Murcia
(Spain). After a long time since their leader Rafa Skam has been involved
in other projects -his huge fanzine 'El Planeta Amarillo', playing

they are again The Yellow Melodies, with Rafa Skam and Pilar Aparisi,
as well as the new guys Jesús González and Jaime Belmonte,
and they come back to introduce us their fourth record, "The
Championship Cup", with a lot of of enthusiasm and savoir-faire;
this mini-album has a gorgeous production, and it is full of beautiful
arrangements. It shows the talent of this band along this mini-lp
in a 10 inch vinyl, that will satisfy the sunshine pop and 60's psychedelia
lovers as well as classic and contemporary British pop fans. The mini-lp
is released exclusively on vinyl, as a gift for those who love appreciating

Zevon, Warren
Warren Zevon [expanded re-issue]
PS, US Warren Zevon was a ten-year music industry veteran who had
written songs for the Turtles, backed up Phil Everly, done years of
session work and been befriended by Jackson Browne by the time he
cut his self-titled album in 1976 (which wasn't his debut, though
the less said about 1969's misbegotten Wanted Dead or Alive the better).
Even though Warren Zevon was on good terms with L.A.'s Mellow Mafia,
he sure didn't think (or write) like any of his pals in the Eagles
or Fleetwood Mac; Zevon's music was full of blood, bile, and mean-spirited
irony, and the glossy surfaces of Jackson Browne's production failed
to disguise the bitter heart of the songs on Warren Zevon. The album
opened with a jaunty celebration of a pair of Old West thieves and
gunfighters ("Frank and Jesse James"), and went on to tell
remarkable, slightly unnerving tales of ambitious pimps ("The
French Inhaler"), lonesome junkies ("Carmelita"), wired,
hard-living lunatics ("I'll Sleep When I'm Dead"), and truly
dastardly womanizers ("Poor Poor Pitiful Me"), and even
Zevon's celebrations of life in Los Angeles, long a staple of the
soft rock genre, had both a menace and an epic sweep his contemporaries
could never match ("Join Me in L.A." and "Desperados
Under the Eaves"). But for all their darkness, Zevon's songs
also possessed a steely intelligence, a winning wit, and an unusually
sophisticated melodic sense, and he certainly made the most of the
high-priced help who backed him on the album. Warren Zevon may not
have been the songwriter's debut, but it was the album that confirmed
he was a major talent, and it remains a black-hearted pop delight.
[Rhino Records released a remastered and expanded version of Warren
Zevon in late 2008, with the original album accompanied by a bonus
disc of demos, alternate takes, and live performances. The early demos
confirm that Zevon's creative vision was clearly in place long before
he had the budget to make a "real" album, and the 1974 recording
of "Carmelita" boasts an extra verse that didn't make it
to its "official" recording. Otherwise, the alternate material
is often rougher and less precise than what made the final cut, which
sometimes works in its favor and occasionally does not, though even
the weakest of the archival performances are intriguing -- especially
when he invites a lady friend to "geeze some Octomol" during
"Join Me in L.A." -- and Zevon is in fine voice. The remastered
version of the original album sounds excellent -- clear enough that
you can hear the workings of the piano's pedals on "Frank and
Jesse James" -- and the new liner notes by Bob Mehr are smart
and revealing. Warren Zevon still ranks with the artist's best and
most lasting work, and this new edition treats it like the landmark
it truly is.] ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide

Antony & The Johnsons
The Crying Light (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US Antony and the Johnson's breakthrough second album "I
Am a Bird Now" won the UK's prestigious Mercury Prize in 2005.
The success that followed introduced many to a pioneering soul singer
unafraid to explore themes that traversed darkness and light, life
and death, male and female. Antony's inimitable voice sparked the
interest of artists ranging from Bjork to Hercules and Love Affair,
resulting in a series of critically acclaimed collaborations. "The
Crying Light" is the highly anticipated full-length follow-up
to "I Am a Bird Now". Here, Antony shifts the thematic focus
and explores his relationship with the natural world. The intimacy
of the Johnsons' sound is enveloped by avant-classical composer Nico
Muhly's symphonic arrangements. The record's centerpiece, "Another
World" traces the singer's dispair in the face of a vanishing
landscape. Antony and the Johnsons' music bridges the gap between
avant-classical music and the blues, and the band's sold out performances
have resulted in standing ovations from Carnegie Hall to the Apollo.
"The Crying Light" is a soul-stirring new work with its
daring compositions and captivating vocal performances. Antony and
the Johnsons have created a subtle and timely work that brings a magical
and yet changing world to the forefront of our consciousness.

& almost Suicide-ish sense of pop form & the experimental
nature of contemporary Scott Walker works.

Bon Iver
Blood Bank (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US The four-song Blood Bank collection continues down the path
forged by 2008's critically acclaimed For Emma, Forever Ago. While
still tied to the identity of the place where it was born, Bon Iver
is no longer an unplanned entity synonymous with Justin Vernon. It
is an idea, a place and sentiment that has now become as international
as it is timeless. From the title track's remembrance of the winter
warmth we seek, to the summer love tribute of b-side gem"Babys,"
Bon Iver's snow-blanketed harmonies live across the seasons. Still,
there is a reverence for sabbatical, solitude and the winding down
of time. As much as Emma is about the cold, the Blood Bank collection
is about the warmth that gets you through it. You can feel the air
move. Like a fire you've been stoking for hours and finally got to
sustain itself, the heat blisters your face while your back is frozen
solid. Bon Iver has grown to include more than what was available
at the much-fabled Wisconsin cabin, such as piano, slide guitar, and
vocoder. As Justin layers on harmonies in the meditative R&B a
capella "The Woods," he declares "I'm building a still
to slow down the time." It is as poetic as it is necessary. Both
expansive and intimate, these four songs explore the darker and lighter
natures of the seasons and what they signify, and offer a dynamic
glimpse into the Natural energy and refined craftsmanship that characterize
Justin Vernon's music.

Clue To Kalo
Lily Perdida (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US Satisfyingly schizophrenic, Clue To Kalo's third full-length
release Lily Perdida is ten voices in one, all of them a different
branch off the same electric folk tree. Amidst jangly guitar, mod
ribbons of flute, and the voices of mastermind Mark Mitchell and duet
partner Ellen Carey, ten musical perspectives on fictional character
Lily Perdida emerge, each song from the point of view of a different
person in her life. A post-modern frolic of keyboards, harpsichords
and laptops, Lily Perdida is a gorgeous and sonically sprawling commentary
on the nature of history and identity. Each succeeding track reinterprets,
misreads or conflicts with the accounts that came before to collectively
create an anti-portrait of the main character. The music ebbs and
flows with the changing characters but never strays from the utterly
satisfying sound we have come to expect from Clue To Kalo. Hailing
from Adelaide, Australia, Clue To Kalo mastermind Mark Mitchell blends
a lo-fi acoustic-folk aesthetic to computer-based production in which
the technology is the means rather than the end. A generous use of
layered melodies, elemental textures, and multi-tracked vocals highlight
a vast range of influences and solidify the fact that Clue To Kalo
is first and foremost a songwriter. In addition to many shows in Australia
and Japan, Clue To Kalo has toured throughout the US and Canada, was
a featured artist at the Mush 2003 CMJ and 2005 SXSW showcases, and
has shared the stage with luminaries like the Greenhornes, Willowz,
Death Cab For Cutie, Caribou, and many more. Inventive without being
inaccessible, Clue To Kalo has established himself as a singular artist
of extraordinary scope and depth.

Forever Sparrow (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 13th)
PS, FRANCE Color Cassette was initially the project of a single musician,
Jason Corder (aka OffTheSky): an old guitar and one four track recorder
went head to head in their home studio of Lexington, Kentucky. But
this solitary project quickly evolved into a collaborative one, in
the course of casual meetings that became veritable musical interventions.
In the course of four years, 14 musicians worked at the home studio.
Today, Color Cassette is Jason Corder and Matt Yarington (aka Set
In Sound), with various guests such as Clint Colburn (vocals), Colin
Campbell (drums, vibes), Anna Hess (violin) and Jordan Munson (textures,
field recordings). After Small Town Smoker, the first EP in 2008 ('single
of the week' at Boomkat, reference for online mail orders), Color
Cassette is now releasing their first concept album, Forever Sparrow.
It tells the story of a little boy who gets lost in a magic forest,
and when he is transformed into a sparrow, he chooses to stay in this
extraordinary world forever. This musical journey, which evokes the
themes found in Peter Pan and Alice In Wonderland, takes the shape
of an acoustic collection in outlines deformed through an electronic
prism. Sketched during the sunny summer afternoons of 2007, this handful
of ideas metamorphosed into song-format fragments, which put forth
the best part of a sound digression. They form a record that is a
miniature, moving, and sometimes disturbing, odyssey. COLOR CASSETTE:
Jason Corder : vocals, lyrics, vibes, melodica, drums, guitar, bass,

taken from seemingly unrecognizable sources, add to the feelings of
unresolved tension, bringing to mind the later works of Scott Walker,
the slow-build of Gorecki's "3rd Symphony" & the murk
of Gavin Bryars' "The Sinking Of The Titanic." He operates
in the area between composed & improvised music, building bridges
between classical music & dark ambient drones & textures.

Bracken / Bibio Remixes (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 13TH)
PS, UK Tracks : A : 'You Are An Annual' remixed by Bracken B : 'Stars
In Autumn' remixes by Bibio. 2 track 45rpm heavyweight 12" vinyl.
"Epic 45 are those cooler than thou post-post-rock chaps who
wang an album or EP out occasionally to be consumed rabidly by you,
the hungry music vulture. Now they've a limited remix 12" in
a variety of sleeves, one for each season of the year. I remember
when we used to actually have seasons in this country rather than
the schizo mulch of conditions we get these days! Bibio & Hood's
Chris Adams AKA Bracken are the prizefight contenders here, Bibio's
re-jig of 'Stars in Autumn' being an atmospheric brooder reminiscent
of later period Boards of Canada. Building up from fractured astral
wildlife effects into a spaced clanky ambler of a tune, I can also
hear bits of Intricate in there, a reassuringly old skool electronic
vibe, full of drifting twinkles & a shuffling phat beat. Very
cinematic in places, it really sets the mood for a lazy sunny afternoon's
loafing! Bracken re-shapes 'You are an Annual' into a pastoral and
blissed out journey full of hesitant bass thrums, shifting, morphing
effects that slip in and around the serene vocals and some impressive
dubbed-out delay and phasing action! This sounds closer to his later
Hood vision rather than the sonic tinkering and future pop of his
solo Bracken material and should just be the icing on the cake for
fans of both Hood & Epic 45! A real treat this one & we're
proud to be giving it the coveted SOTW" spot!

Fire Witch
Japan (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 13TH)
PS, US This Melbourne, Australia act plays thundering, spacious metallic
sludge. This is a LTD ED, silk screened 1st run of only 200 copies
on COLOR vinyl. Aquarius Records sez of the band: "Aussie noise
rockers the Grey Daturas had been telling us forever about some killer
band called Fire Witch, who they played w/ all the time. FW are another
band who traffic in the slooooooooow & heavy, but they definitely
give it their own twist. Not sludgy like SUNNO))) or their legions
of followers, & not really noisy like many of their countrymen.
Instead they're some sort of strange downtuned slowcore mathrock.
Massive basses (that's right. no guitars!) churn & throb, the
drums a crushing pound, over the top, drawn out wailing 'leads', all
the makings of a proper rock band, but instead they fuck it all up...
laced w/ all sorts of killer melodies, making it sound like a doomed
version of June Of 44 or Engine Kid"

Frumpy
Frumpy 2 [re-issue] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 27TH)
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Inga Rumpf's Frumpy was among the most
startling bands on the entire German rock scene of the early '70s,
an act so diametrically opposed to the Krautrock boom beloved by critics
elsewhere that first impressions of their music always leave listeners
scratching their heads. If Frumpy has any role models, it is a collision
between Meddle-era Pink Floyd and a less-precocious Uriah Heep. Frumpy
2, unsurprisingly their second album, features just four tracks, but
all are soaring slabs of emotive guitar and keyboards, deeply progressive
of course, but unquestionably pop as well... Rumpf herself, meanwhile,
has a range and depth comparable to Curved Air's Sonja Kristina, with
an emotive strength which seems all the more remarkable when you remember
that English is not her native language... The guitar and keyboard
solos and duels which take place above the tumultuous rhythms are
as spectacular as anything else in the genre. But even while you're
sitting slack-jawed in awe, it is very difficult to play favorites.
Frumpy, like Rumpf's Atlantis after them, has antecedents aplenty,
and their influences peep out behind every corner. But the manner
in which they've been sewn together owes little to any Anglo-American
role models and little to any Krautrock basics, too. Quite simply,
Frumpy 2 is the prog album you'll be returning to long after the others
have all dulled into wallpaper."

All Will Be Changed [re-issue] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 27TH)
PS, US No other artist has had as lasting an influence on German rock
music as Inga Rumpf. Her smokey, bluesy voice, influenced by icons
such as Mahalia Jackson and Nina Simone, fills fans all over the world
with enthusiasm to this day. Her seemingly limitless stylistic range
has rightfully earned Inga Rumpf a reputation as Germany's no. 1 rock
vocalist. 1970's All Will Be Changed saw the newly formed band gear
their music to established international sounds, but they immediately
found their own style thanks to the ever-present drone of a Hammond
organ and Rumpf's unique voice. They initially worked without a guitarist,
allowing keyboardist Jean-Jacques Kravetz to rotate the powerful Leslie
rotor. The national press initially eyed Frumpy with the typical scepticism
of that time towards anybody who made rock music on German shores.
Unimpressed by such ambiguities, Frumpy continued to work on their
career and influenced countless other bands and vocalists over the
years. Their now legendary debut album is being released completely
remastered in digipak format with exclusive liner notation and rare
photos.

Jeremy Jay
Love Everlasting (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US 4 songs: Love Everlasting · Lite Beam · Jet Stream
· Love Everlasting (Winter Version) It was winter outside and
something was happening in the storybook world of Jeremy Jay's psyche.
While working on his upcoming full-length Slow Dance [KLP197] (to
be released in spring '09), there was an icicle-caked excitement that
resulted in a snow-flurry of extra recordings. The cozy, insulated
vibe of Olympia, Washington and Dub Narcotic Studio took hold and
Jeremy, along with Ilya Malinksy (guitar), Nick Pahl (drums) and Derek
James (bass) crafted "Love Everlasting" [KLP202] a separate
12" single. These extra songs, recorded with a fiery compulsion,
were written in Jeremy's Los Angeles apartment and expanded in studio.
The song "Lite Beam" took shape with a solarized hi-hat
and synth bass - a real disco dance cut; "Jet Stream," has
that special synth bass that propels it to a dance floor climax, and
the single itself, "Love Everlasting," twinkles magnificently
with a sensual glide. Jeremy Jay and his band have toured extensively
across the U.S.A., Europe and Australia in support of his recent album
A Place Where We Could Go [KLP187] and will be reacquainting the U.S.
with their icy soundscapes after the release of this 12" single.
"Part poet, part '50s teen idol and part ghost, Jeremy Jay [takes
listeners to] a place where girls have fairytale looks and candied
apples are served for lunch, where dreams, fantasies and movies collide,
and where Gene Vincent, Buddy Holly, Morrissey and Alan Vega are loved
equally. It's no surprise that Jay calls his hometown of Los Angeles
'the City of Angels' -- he's a true romantic and sensualist, transforming
his surroundings into a glamorous, magical reality." - All Music

Peter Liecht w/ Voice Crack (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US This 1989 film collects samples from the land-and-soundscape,
underscoring in the process the oft-ignored industrial underpinning
of our latter-day culture. Voice Crack, the everyday household electronics
duo of Norbert Moslang & Andy Guhl, are part Licechti's vision
with exploration of their musical workings . Whether clicking quietly
& rhythmically or humming & shrieking at ear-splitting volume,
their recycled electronics produce innovative sounds and provide an
appropriate accompaniment in this cinematic search for the detritus
of our culture, the lost & destroyed remains of the last century
of progress. A short, tense film comprised of flashing images: footage
of Voice Crack rehearsals & concerts is juxtaposed with visual
shards of the fall & winter landscape of the area between Alpstein
and the Bodensee. Utilizing color & black-and-white footage as
well as combining the visual & the acoustic in an expression that
subtly synthesizes the two, Liechti delineates a world of existence
through sound & geography. All Region.

Machine Fabriek & Stephen Vitiello
Box Music (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US Rutger and Stephen sort of accidentally met through e-mail.
A simple note regarding an ordering question for a CD led to an enthusiastic
e-mail conversation and climaxed in a musical collaboration. This
all happened in a very short period, both musicians being very inspired
by the concept of "exchange," as a means to cross space
and time -- Rutger living in the Netherlands and Stephen in Virginia.
Most of the time, when (electronic) musicians work together it's a
matter of swapping digital files. In this case they decided to do
something different and sent each other a box full of (mostly non-musical,
or musically non-functional) objects and recordings, with the "assignment"
to make music with those objects and all as source materials. As the
titles tell, we're talking about an egg cutter, thumb piano, a broken
kraakle box, rice, chocolate sprinkles, old cassette tapes, a broken
7" record, etcetera, etcetera. Both musicians made two of their
own solo tracks with the box they received, and the last track was
done together by Rutger adding sounds and processing to a piece started
by Stephen. For Rutger/ Machinefabriek this is part of his most delicate
work. For Stephen, it was a new and extremely enjoyable form of long-distance
collaboration. Machinefabriek: Rutger Zuydervelt, better known as
Machinefabriek, lives in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Started as Machinefabriek
in 2004, he released 40+ small run home-made cdr's as well as work
for Type Records, Lampse, Digitalis, Staalplaat (Mort Aux Vaches)
and now 12K. A double remix cd was released in 2007, with interpetations
by Alva Noto, Pita, Mitchell Akiyama, Xela, Gert-Jan Prins and many
more. Collaborations (live or recording) include Steinbrüchel,
Jasper TX, Wouter van Veldhoven, Simon Nabatov, Frans de Waard, Aaron
Martin and Peter Broderick. Stephen Vitiello: Stephen Vitiello is
a sound and media artist based in Richmond, VA. CD releases include
Bright and Dusty Things (New Albion), Listening to Donald Judd (Sub
Rosa) and Untitled/Exchange, a collaborative CD with Michael J. Schumacher
(A Question of Re-Entry). Solo exhibitions of Vitiello's sound installations,
photographs and drawings have been presented at The Project, NY, Museum
52, London, the Texas Gallery, Houston, TX and Diapason, NYC. Group
exhibitions include the 2002 Whitney Biennial and the 2006 Biennial
of Sydney. Over the last 18 years, Stephen has collaborated with numerous
musicians and artists including Scanner, Pauline Oliveros, Andrew
Deutsch, Julie Mehretu and Tony Oursler.

Music Go Music
Warm In The Shadows (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US Warm in the Shadows rounds out the trio of three-song 12"
singles that Music Go Music have released over the course of 2008-09.
It's both a fitting end-piece to the trilogy and a remarkable expansion
of the group's sonic and emotional breadth. There is a casual but
undeniable magic to these songs, and it flows around and out of each
note of every melody. Title song "Warm in the Shadows" is
dance music, as envisioned by a group with a greater allegiance to
pop archetypes than to the hymns of the dance-floor. It's a step in
a different direction; an invitation to shake, coupled with a gentle
evocation of the pain of wrecked love ("what kind of heart would
break so easy as my own"). It's a case history and a cure for
both the lovesick and the lovesick-to-be. The B-side offers up stories
of exotic depravity consuming itself in ways both savage and deceptively
elegant. The gypsy rhythms of "Thousand Crazy Nights" undergird
a tale of dog piled revelers instructed to "feel with your face,
let eyes be your hands" whilst "trapped in desire's aggro
dance.""Love,Violent Love" is a psychedelic voyage
through a land of raving mobs who "spiral past control"
once their love is at last requited. This collection of songs is further
proof of the power of the transformative embrace in which Music Go
Music holds what is dear to them, and the singular vision that they
impart to it.

was described as "rapper songwriter". With this album, he's
become a singer songwriter. He did all by himself in his small bedroom,
like songwriting, recording and playing all the instruments (guitar,

Ocean
Pantheon Of The Lesser (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 11TH)
PS, US 2xLP to follow in about one month. Following their acclaimed
breakthrough debut album that caught the ears of critics and fans
worldwide, and became Important's highest selling album, Ocean has
returned with their forward thinking, brutally heavy and purely minimalist
sophomore album Pantheon Of The Lesser. Pantheon Of The Lesser was
composed over a period of two years in Ocean's home studio in Portland,
Maine. As the seasons passed each track was written, re-written, played
and then re-played as layers were slowly stripped away until the true
essence of the song was revealed. Once Ocean entered the studio it
took another two years to deconstruct Pantheon Of The Lesser until
they had found the essence of their writing. This disciplined deconstructionist
approach to songwriting is how Pantheon Of The Lesser is how Ocean
takes it to the next level of the abyss. The result of this compositional
technique is over an hour of strictly bare instrumentation and a kind
of natural heaviness that slowly rises and falls in a pure organic
fashion. Everything in it's own time. Simply profound. Heavy like
Schoenberg. While Ocean continues to explore and expand upon their
"less is more" approach of profound musical minimalism and
sheer heaviness, Pantheon Of The Lesser is a bit more musical than
its predecessor. The Beacon, the opening track on Pantheon Of The
Lesser, was played as Ocean's complete set on a recent US tour and
on dates with Mono and Boris. Clocking in at 41 minutes on record
and over an hour live; The Beacon evolves in 3 distinct movements
with fleeting moments of hypnotic melody and earth shaking heavy dirges
creating an all-encompassing tone of pure misanthropy. The second
and final track on Pantheon Of The Lesser, titled Of The Lesser, carries
a similar theme of misery. Written as an ode to distraction, chemical
and otherwise, it is Ocean at their most personal: a pure sonic stream

Kanye West, Elliott Smith, and Fiona Apple, as well as scored the
films Magnolia, Synechdoche NY, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless

finds him reinterpreting two cuts from of Montreal's most recent album
Skeletal Lamping. These are by no means remixes, as Brion literally
reinterprets the songs by taking the basic tracks and adding more
instrumentation and backing vocals, including the work of Nickel Creek
vocalist and mandolin-player Chris Thile.

Olson, Mark & Gary Louris
Ready for the Flood (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 27TH)
PS, US New collaboration from Jayhawks duo! Although they've toured
together and renewed their friendship, this is the first recording
by Olson and Louris since Olson left the Jayhawks in 1995. What would
become READY FOR THE FLOOD was recorded at Sage & Sound Studios
in Hollywood with friend Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes. Louris
had called in Robinson, who happened to be in town at that point,
for vibe support and he ended up producing the album; he also appears
on the album playing harmonica and contributing backing vocals. READY
FOR THE FLOOD captures the stripped down, fingerpicked guitar playing
and Laurel Canyon sound of an earlier time, with allusions to English
folk Bert Jansch, Nick Drake, John Renbourne, whom both Mark and Gary
had both been getting into independently and a simpler, live recording
technique where capturing the right vibe was as important as the sound.
It s an album that only two career musicians and friends could make
organic, intuitive and loosely confident, heartfelt and moving, echoing
with the combined experience of two kindred spirits reuniting to do
what they do and love best.

O'Malley, Stephen
Keep an Eye Out! (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US Table of the Elements continues to celebrate its 15th anniversary
with the tenth installment in its Guitar Series Vols. 3 & 4. It's
a 12xLP romp of deviant fretnoise by some of experimental music's
most prominent players, including Christian Fennesz, Thurston Moore,
and Sunn O)))'s Stephen O'Malley. Sunn O))) founder Stephen O'Malley
summons a mesmerizing drone, absorbing the listener into an aural
tar pit of deep, inexorable oblivion. He wears a cloak of post-metal
allegiances with behemoths like Earth, but beneath that, there is
a vibrant body of work that owes as much to the heady minimalism of
Tony Conrad and Steve Reich. Constantly pushing at the extremes of
volume and duration, O'Malley's sound is a physical phenomenon, infused
with an intimidating power - and possessing, at its core, an oddly
meditative tranquility. "The supremacy of Table of the Elements
for the past decade as an unwavering outpost of ultra-experimental
strains can be attributed to its concomitant adherence to valiance.
Most of the Table of the Elements catalogue has no broad commercial
appeal, and many of its projects - scores for films directed by early-60s
Conrad associate Jack Smith or a 3xCD box set by an unknown two-guitars-and-drums
trio from Atlanta - are risky ventures, even with respect to the experimental
marketplace. Yet, this philosophy of risk works because everyone associated
with the label feels like they're doing important work releasing important
records, and they're willing to go for broke to make it happen."

the wildest stuff around." -KYLE GANN (NEW YORK TIMES)

PS, US The One Up Downstairs is members of American Football, Owen,

boards and became the frequent recipient of questions sent to the
Polyvinyl info e-mail account: were they actually a band, did they
sound like American Football, did they ever record? The answers to
all of these questions are a resounding "yes." In an effort
to make the songs available to fans Polyvinyl released the band's
only recorded output a few years ago, which led to another question:
would the songs ever see a proper release as a 7"? Long sought
after, these songs are now available as a 7" that includes a

O'Rourke, Jim & Loren Connors
Two Nice Catholic Boys (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US These two nice Catholic boys, Loren Connors and Jim O'Rourke,
met at the crossroads each night during a 1997 European tour. By this
time O'Rourke had reissued Connors' seminal heartbreak album In Pittsburgh
on his Dexter's Cigar label and was preparing to produce the guitarist's
big-band mash-up Hoffman Estates with Alan Licht. Together, Connors-O'Rourke
unravel slow motion Venusian style blues across three extended pieces
to thundering, feedback splattered grooves. The spontaneous melodies
shift from devastating, country road intimacy to hypnotic over-amped
rock. It's ferocious, epic, and an utter beauty capable only from
two who know themselves and each other all too well. This live CD
is only the second duo release by these musical partners despite performing
together since the mid-90s. During the past decade, O'Rourke has repeatedly
returned to hours of recordings captured across Europe to select these
47 minutes.

Parenthetical Girls
Safe As Houses (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US "THERE'S BLOOD BETWEEN MY LEGS, AND IN THE GRASS OUTSIDE
YOUR HOUSE I CAME." With this goose-pimplingly visceral couplet
begins the fragile journey of Safe As Houses, the second album from
experimental Northwestward pop band Parenthetical Girls. Though some
two years past between the initial release of the (((GRRRLS))) LP
(Parenthetical Girls' debut album, recently reissued on Slender Means
Society), Safe As Houses' narrative begins precisely where that album
left off-on the same sweat-and-menstrual-blood-soaked summer lawn
that so tenderly concluded their debut-but this time from a harrowingly
different perspective. "Love Connection, pt. 2" cements
the somber, ostensibly sinister narrative tone that shrouds much of
Safe As Houses, while simultaneously establishing the tremendous sonic
leap the band undertook in their two years of relative quiet. From
there, the record leaps into an altogether different sort of narrative-one
anchored in the surprising confidence of words-singer Zac Pennington's
plainspoken and startlingly corporeal apparitions. Unsettling and
beautiful in equal measure, Pennington's a-linear narrative weaves
the surprisingly evocative mythology that cradles the record's kitchen-sink
experimentation. Recorded with the band's previous three-piece configuration
(an ensemble made up of Pennington and Dead Science members Sam Mickens
and Jherek Bischoff-a regular contributor to Xiu Xiu and Casiotone
For the Painfully Alone, who also served as producer for the record),
Safe As Houses embraces the group's shrewd attention to the awkward
confluence of experimental and pop musics-creating a record that is
at once more difficult and more intrinsically palatable (not to mention
significantly darker) than anything so far bearing the Parenthetical
Girls name. Which is to say, it's much better.

Parenthetical Girls
(((GRRRLS))) (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US The cumbersome history of the (((GRRRLS))) LP begins sometime
in 2002, when two childhood friends began a home recording project
in a failed milltown of Everett, Washington. Compiling an innocent
assortment of equipment (bass synthesizer, ill-tuned guitar, analog
tape delay, and glockenspiel), Pennington and thencollaborator Jeremy
Cooper embarked on a course to emulate the spirit of their mutual
musical interests, which at the time primarily included the likes
of Brian Eno, Pete Kember, Phil Spector, and the early Rough Trade
catalog. Over the following year, the clunky results were compiled
onto a low bias cassette tape (split into a strained eight tracks)
and labeled "Parenthetical Girls". This cassette was mixed
down to a single copy, the original tape promptly lost. A year or
so later--with the help of considerably more capable hands (namely
the Dead Science's Jherek Bischoff and Xiu Xiu's Jamie Stewart- Pennington
set about digitally (and heavily) retrofitting the original recordings
into seven proper compositions. To further complicate matters, Pennington
commissioned Bischoff and Stewart to complete two radically different
sets of mixes for the songs-which have since become respectively known
as the "O" and "X" versions of the record. But
now it's four years on. In that time, Parenthetical Girls have released
two more critically-acclaimed full lengths (2006's Safe As Houses
[Slender Means Society] and this year's Entanglements [Tomlab]), toured
the US and Europe with the likes of Deerhoof, Xiu Xiu, Los Campesinos!,
Evangelicals, and Casiotone For the Painfully Alone (whose album Etiquette,
incidentally, features a rather lovely cover of (((GRRRLS)))' closing
track "Love Connection"). We are pleased to finally present
(((GRRRLS))) with the wide distribution that it deserves for the first
time. In an attempt to maintain the distinct duality of the LP release,
the CD version of (((GRRRLS))) features both editions of the album-but
in two different, enhanced CD formats: version "O" (as mixed
by Jherek Bischoff) plays on any standard CD player like your average
CD should, while the "X" version (as mixed by Jamie Stewart),
takes advantage of the near ubiquity of the iPod revolution by offering
its tracks as super high quality MP3s, accessible via any computer.
(Confused? Me too. Just put it in your computer-you'll figure it out).
Additionally, the enhanced materials feature "Inspirational Shortpants
(avec paroles)," a track not available on the original vinyl
release.

Psychic Ills
Mirror Eye (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US "Psychic Ills have that dance band by accident thing going
for them in a big way. Everything about them is bewitching, really,
evacuating, an unlikely future-primitive grind." - Village Voice
"This NYC quartet set their stall somewhere between oceanic guitar
abstraction and the brittle crunch of psychedelic guitar rock, feeding
their extended chugging jams through a thick fog of fuzz." -
The Wire Mirror Eye, the second full-length album from Psychic Ills,
is an altogether heady affair and as its title suggests, a perspective
reflection. Through the course of eight tracks, Elizabeth Hart, Jimy
SeiTang, Brian Tamborello and Tres Warren journey through a unique
amalgamation of electronic explorations, improvised jamming and various
sonic experiments that yield a record at once familiar and otherworldly
- and unlike anything happening right now. Sprawling opener "Mantis"
sets the record's tone with modulating synths and hand drums that
give way to a loose groove, terrestrial guitar patterns and shamanic
vocals. If you are still around when it rolls into its ending nearly
11 minutes later, its safe to say that you're on board. Following
that, the open-ended trance rock of the second track, 'Meta' fades
up as if the band has already been jamming on it long before the listener
has been let in. It departs in a similar fashion, save for a brief
reprise of reversed tape and whatever remnants of the chorus' "Meta,
Meta, Meta" are hanging around in the listener's head like a
contact high. "Sub Synth" is an off-the-cuff synthesizer
splice that descends into the improvised space raga of "Eyes
Closed." I Take You As My Wife Again" continues deeper into
the abstract with metallic synths and improvised electronics transitioning
into organic percussion and whistles before ultimately arriving at
its minimal techno inspired ending. Fingernail Tea" is the most
straight forward song and vaguely harkens back to elements of their
previous full-length, Dins. The hallucinatory next track, "The
Way Of" is the album's last burst of energy, forming out of spinning
synths and clatter, and riding an eastern bass line and watery guitar
riff before unravelling under percussion and goat scream mania. final
track "Go to the radio" is a come down of sorts combining
two main processed loops, an electronic tambura with a circular dubbed-out
field recording of a man's voice repeating the song's name and message,
and perhaps the album's for that matter. Mirror Eye is the imaginative
culmination of a period of exploration for Psychic Ills. A transcendent
combination of musics that symbolizes how far the band has and continues
to evolve beyond genre - and a fun listen too. This release will be
followed by a mini-lp in the winter of other unheard material from
this period.

Extended Play [Triptych for the child survivors of war and conflict]
(PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US LIMITED EDITION 600. LINE is proud to release the latest audio
work from British composer and installation artist Janek Schaefer
based on his installation of the same title. Installation Reviews:
"a piece to return to again and again... haunting and lulling"
[The Wire, UK] "so inspirational, and in many ways very spiritual"
[Gerry Turvey] "I was so deeply touched by your piece" [Mandeep
Kaur Samra] Red is the colour of Life, of Death, and of Love. Scarlett,
my first child, was born in 2005, and since then I have been very
aware of how lucky we all are. have been constantly comparing this
to the fact that my mother was born in Warsaw in 1942 - the epicenter
of World War II. How opposite can two beginnings be? This inspired
me to produce the Extended Play installation, which continuously and
positively celebrates hope and new beginnings, for child survivors
in all situations around the world. The original idea for the composition
came from learning about the 'Jodoform' system of secret musical messages
that were broadcast by the BBC Service, during music they played was
given a particular meaning, which was interpreted by Polish Underground.
Discovered from the original Jodoform logbook, that the lovely Polish
folk song 'Tango Lyczakowskie', was broadcast on the day my mother
was born. Song describes how children in 1918, had been forced to
take up arms, in defense of their town. From this tune, chose a short
rising musical phrase, and with my arranger Michael Jennings, developed
a ten-minute score. Each of the three solo parts was then recorded
separately, edited, and cut onto vinyl. In the gallery, 3 x Cello
EP's, 3 x Piano EP's, and 3 x Violin EP's are played at either 33,
45, or 78rpm using nine retro record players. These play continuously,
and each was modified to stop playing briefly in response to the audience
moving around the exhibition. This has the effect of changing and
extending the composition, so that it is never the same again.

Fakerie is as much for the ears as the eyes. Glowing white lights
ebb and expand from darkness in shifting series - like clustered stars
- as penetrating resonances of acoustic and electronic overtones decompose
into the tiniest sand-like components. Traces of Mary Lucier's mid-1970s
burn films and Francois Bayle's musical investigation into the physical
and psychical world is present. The specially programmed Region 0
(free)/NTSC format DVD plays in constant loop. Its 22- minutes can
be expanded into hours allowing the user to immerse themselves in
the work. This DVD is Shearer's first long-form film release. In the

PS, US 2 songs: My Music Is My Sweat b/w Great Salt Lake "My
Music is My Sweat" began with a conversation between Karl Blau
and Angelo Spencer about how music is similar to body odor and, like
everyone's stench, one's music is also unique and identifiable. Angelo's
music is as raw as sweat. Recorded in one day, on one take by Blau,
this 7" is a puddle of twitchy urgency. Generally a one-man band,
this recording is fleshed out with frantic drum fills and fidgety
keys by L'Orchidee d'Hawaii soon after they finished a tour with Spencer.
"My Music is My Sweat" is the sprint and "The Great
Salt Lake" is the cool-down, exasperated pause needed to sprint

hero. "Music should always be like that." featuring L'Orchidee

Some Deaths Take Forever (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, UK LTM presents the second in a series of expanded CD reissues
by visionary French electronic composer Bernard Szajner. Originally
released in late 1980, Some Deaths Take Forever is a deeply emotional,
sometimes disturbing musical account of the feelings of a prisoner
on death row, conceived as the soundtrack to a short film by Amnesty
International. The album mixes dark, angular and unnerving electronic
textures with dynamic rock arrangements, guest musicians including
Bernard Paganotti of Magma. Reviews rated the album highly: 'A modern
electronic masterwork - one of the most exciting and innovative piece
of electronic music to be released this year' (Melody Maker); 'Frantic,
outraged music shames the bulk of oscillator nuts peddling their dodgy
little repetitions around' (Sounds); 'Unquestionably one of the decade's
most accomplished fusions of sophisticated electronics and driving
rock' (NME). The expanded 60 minute CD features three previously unreleased

Superficial Music (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 13TH)
PS, UK LTM presents the first in a series of expanded CD reissues
by visionary French electronic composer Bernard Szajner. Originally
released in late 1981, Superficial Music incorporates elements of
his previous album Visions of Dune played backwards at half speed
and treated digitally, as well as the three-part suite Oswiecim, an
imagining of the Holocaust informed by the experience of his own family.
Sometimes harmonious, sometimes unsettling, Szajner's music is never
less than extraordinary. Reviews rated the album highly: 'Superficial?
No, superlative music! If you care at all for soundscapes that eschew
cheap escapes, this album will do far more than tickle the surface
of you mind' (NME); 'A significant success - a wholly involving and
frequently disturbing blanket of continually contorting synthetic
sound' (Melody Maker). The expanded 65-minute CD features three previously
unreleased bonus tracks, recorded in 1982. Bernard Szajner biography:
Born in Grenoble in 1944, Szajner first made his name as a lighting
designer for Magma, Gong and the Who. Having invented new instruments
such as the laser harp used by Jean-Michel Jarre, Szajner began to
record experimental, conceptual albums of his own, including Visions
of Dune (1979), Some Deaths Take Forever (1980), Superficial Music
(1981) and Brute Reason (1983). He has also recorded as Zed, and was
one half of The (Hypothetical) Prophets. Since the mid 80s, polymath
Szajner has worked as a painter, filmmaker and theatre director.

Oldham, and Jason Molina. In 2006, after three months in Europe touring
on his third and most accessible album, Minor Works, Tillman recorded
his fourth collection of songs at home with his brother and roommate.
Cancer and Delirium struck a perfect balance between the intimacy
of his earlier releases with the nuanced, melodic sense of Minor Works.
Each song imbued with the same strikingly disconsolate singing and
devastatingly poignant prose that Tillman is known for and accented
with some of his most gorgeous, spare arrangements. Vacilando Territory
Blues, Tillman's fifth and first with Western Vinyl, came as the result
of three different recording attempts in 2008, in which entire sessions
were scrapped, and ultimately the majority of the final material would
surface and be recorded days before mastering. The push and pull of
this record veers sharply from the tone of Tillman's previous releases,
which for the most part, adhere to a singular mood and stylistic execution.
The tension dynamically between songs like "Firstborn" and
"New Imperial Grand Blues" is hard to reconcile, but the
way the songs are framed herein belies a cohesion not dissimilar to
classic oddball albums such as After The Goldrush. Sacrifcing a stylized
album, the breadth of Tillman's abilities as a songwriter emerge on
VTB, in an array of musical personalities bound by his lyrical existential
dread and economical arrangements. In 2008, Tillman joined longtime
friends and musical collaborators, Fleet Foxes. Casey Wescott and
Christian Wargo both appear on VTB, along with several regular contributors
who were willing to adapt to several idiosyncratic recording obstructions.
Vacilando Territory Blues is far and away Tillman's most collaborative
effort, and the most striking moments here are those seemingly stumbled
upon, without resorting to second-takes or microphone re-adjustment.
This album casts a strange perspective on what people have come to
expect from Tillman's music, but these songs, though oddly untethered,
reveal the process of someone coming to terms with the prospect of
making music in the void.

The Airing Of Grievances (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US Patrick Stickles, lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter, launches
his insights across a wall of defiant, triumphant rock anthems, which
have earned comparisons to Bruce Springsteen, The Pogues, and The
Replacements. "Patrick Stickles howls with anguish way beyond
his 22 years, often cramming lyrics into tight spaces just to make
sure he gets the last word in. The drama's more Boss than Bright Eyes,
fueled by blue collar frustration and, most notably, beer" -
Pitchfork.

Week That Was, The
S-T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 26TH)
PS, US 2008 debut album from the British Electro Pop outfit, chiefly
Field Music dude David Brewis' big brother, and featuring contributions
from Field Music colleagues. Musically the record is an expansive
tribute, paying direct (and indirect) homage to the wildly ambitious
Linn Drum and Fairlight experiments of Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, and
Tin Drum-era Japan. Fused with typically detailed arrangements and
a sense of drama, this makes The Week That Was a brain-shattering,
32-minute epic, straying far outside the conventions of most indie-guitar
music.

Welcome Wagon, The
Welcome to the Welcome Wagon (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 20TH)
PS, US This debut album by The Welcome Wagon unveils a ramshackle
sing-a-long enterprise of a Presbyterian pastor (the Rev. Vito Aiuto)
and his wife (Monique) wrestling out the influences of folk music,
religion, popular culture, and church tradition in a collection of
songs that is as soulful as it is good-humored. This gorgeous brew
is reflected in the group's repertoire, which unflinchingly consolidates
a vast history of "sacred" song traditions: from old Testament
psalms, to Presbyterian Psalters of the 17th century, to iconoclastic
pop innovators of the 1960s (The Velvet Underground), to charismatic
catholics of the 1970s (Lenny Smith), and even into the melancholy
lovelorn pop of the 1980s (The Smiths). Recorded, produced, and arranged
by Sufjan Stevens. The Welcome Wagon WELCOME TO THE WELCOME WAGON

Woolson, Raymond Scott
Broken Things Mended (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 10TH)
PS, US Raymond Scott Woolson has been creating guitar-driven ethereal
music for many years now. Broken Things Mended is his fifth full-length
album of celestial shoegaze sound-scapes. A long year in the making,
and several more months of perfecting during the mixing and mastering
process, this release continues Woolson's exploration of soaring guitar
epics and pastoral mood meanderings. A fair amount of variety went
into the mix. Here a shimmer of dreampop, there a buzz of psychedelia.
A brush of piano, a burst of drums, and on several occasions even
a very commendable imitation of a string orchestra. Those are in fact
guitars. An ocean of guitars. The songs of Broken Things Mended are
bright and uplifting. There may be a passing touch of melancholy,
a brief wistful feeling, but absolutely no doom and gloom. Woolson
will not add to the burden of darkness in the world. His is the music
of light and love, of faith and hope. These songs look forward and
upward. Victories are won, promises are kept, and broken things are
mended.
