Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

Crystal Stilts "Self-Titled" CD $10.25 (Woodsist)
Recent singles collection from awesome NYC lofi garage-pop freaks that sunk its hook and won't let go, plus it's on the weird and wooly Woodsist label, so it's automatic. Yes, there's a C86/Subway/K Records/Flying Nun battle of naive/gothic/weird wills going on here; all in the very best ways. Echoing and gothy, like Joy Division with a twist of Pin Group fuzz-fusion, naïve and sweet like Beat Happening shaded with The Razorcuts. Garage odes! Moody dirges! Woozy ballads!

13th Floor Elevators
Going Up: The Very Best Of The 13th Floor Elevators
PS, UK 2004 release, single CD best-of collection. "The 20 greatest mind-blowing highlights recorded for the International Artists label between 1966 and 1969 by the pioneering psychedelic rock group. Featuring the groundbreaking single, 'You're Gonna Miss Me,' other classics such as 'Fire Engine,' 'Slip Inside This House' and 'May The Circle Remain Unbroken,' plus the recently discovered nugget 'I Don't Ever Want To Come Down' and a manic version of Van Morrison's garage classic, 'Gloria.' Fronted by the truly eccentric and iconic Roky Erickson, The 13th Floor Elevators produced some of the most inventive and memorable music of the era. Their often-menacing drug-fuelled songs with a potent combination of R&B, folk-rock and Kinks/Stones punk and stoned lyrics based on a nihilistic hippy philosophy have brought them cult status ever since."

All That The Name Implies
S-T
PS, US This mellow collection of communal U.S. hippie folk was recorded in 1968 and went undiscovered for decades. Featuring male and female vocals, strummed 6 and 12-string acoustic guitars, congas, flute and tambourine, it's a lost gem that's bound to appeal to fans of stoned rural psychedelia. The songs range from touching ballads to whimsical ditties and a highly unusual medley in tribute to folk giant Fred Neil. It makes its CD debut here, and comes complete with all four sides of their equally-rare and obscure 45s.

Ambarchi, Oren
A Final Kiss on Poisoned Cheeks
PS, US There is a vivid breadth to the guitar deconstructions of Australian OREN AMBARCHI. Sometimes his work takes a delicate lilt; it can also dive into dark and deep pools of sound when he joins cowl-core ensembles Sunn O))) (with Stephen O'Malley) and Burial Chamber Trio (with Greg Anderson). Whether with those bands, solo, or in collaboration with luminaries ranging from Mike Patton and John Zorn to Christian Fennesz, he consistently reroutes his instrument into zones of arch, alien abstraction. "A Final Kiss on Poisoned Cheeks" offers a dizzying gaze straight into a chasm of extreme frequencies - paint-peelingly high and bowel-churningly low - all set atop a sub-strata of menace, angst, and contemplative beauty.

Ant Trip Ceremony, The
24 Hours [re-issue]
PS, US In 1968, a group of talented college students at Oberlin College formed a band and recorded their only album, 24 Hours. Pressed in scant quantity, this album would become a collector's item, selling for hundreds of dollars. Cicadelic Records is excited to release the complete album on CD with detailed liner notes and photos on the history of the band. The psychedelic sounds that emanate from this album will have listeners 'turn on, tune in, and drop out.' Originally Issued In 1968. 40th year anniversary release!

Arms
Kids Aflame (CD/DVD)
PS, US Inspired by a love of "sad/weird/insular genius types" like Neil Young, Stephin Merritt, & David Byrne, the music cloaks catchy tunes in fuzzy, echo-laden production & TODD GOLDSTEIN's melodramatic, crooned vocals. A true one-man band, he recorded this over a period of 3 years, playing all the instruments himself. A hazy, late-night mood runs deep in the record's 13 tracks w/ a surprise around every corner.

Atlas Sound
Let the Blind Lead Those
PS, US VINYL VERSION. To make the 4 sides of the album complete, there are 6 NEW SONGS added!! One of the latest "true queer art punks" to emerge from the cracked pavement of southern suburban sprawl, this is the solo moniker of DEERHUNTER frontman/provocateur BRADFORD COX. This is, essentially, a bedroom album, a collage, mixing the garage rock & ambient electronic influences previously explored w/ Deerhunter in a new context, w/ newly explored recording techniques, mainly laptop based, learned w/ guidance from kranky artist Nudge's Brian Foote.

Atlas Shrugged
PS, US In March 2008, while ATLAS SOUND toured the U.S.A., chief Atlas Provocateur BRADFORD COX stopped off in Olympia, Wash. to lay down some tracks at the Dub Narcotic studio for this stellar Disco Plate release. Entirely off the cuff, Bradford made up the song on the spot, played all the instruments and improvised vocals. The session was engineered by CALVIN JOHNSON, who in his guise as Selector Dub Narcotic added his own flourishes, vocal and melodica, mixed the arresting B side "version". Another instant classic in our Dub Narcotic Disco Plate series of 7" 45 RPM records.

Belong
Same Places (Slow Version)
PS, US With "Same Places (Slow Version)," BELONG evinces a slow-motion transformation - plate tectonics, wired for sound. Aural mountains melt into seas; yet icy barrens yield to breathing jungles of detail. The single, sprawling track may evoke decay, dissolution and destruction, but underfoot are tendrils of inexplicable joy. Belong sings a lullaby of obliteration, and the paradox it embodies would make both Kevin Shields and Tony Conrad proud: crushing melancholia and shuddering euphoria, inexorably intertwined.

Bitcrush
Shimmer and Fade
PS, US Originally released in 2005, 'Shimmer and Fade' was a limited time download EP from n5MD's sub-label En:peg Digital. Within its forty-eight minutes, bass and guitar arose from the background to a place of prominence and carried the EP's melodic content. This change in form represented an important period in the natural evolution of the Bitcrush sound, a time that found Mike Cadoo transitioning from his post-industrial and IDM beginnings found on Enarc to the more ambient/post-shoegaze direction of 'In Distance.' After years of requests to bring Shimmer and Fade back, n5MD has chosen to re-release it as a re-mastered CD which contains four extra tracks not found on the original EP. Limited to 1000, this release will serve as a time capsule of what was yet to come.

Black To Comm
Fractal Hair Geometry
PS, GERMANY Black To Comm is the solo venture of Dekorder label boss Marc Richter. With two and a half albums released on his own label he has established himself as one of the most prolific drone artists out there with a forthcoming album on the American Digitalis label, a collaborative CD with Datashock on Ikuisuus, a 7" on the Irish Trensmat label and a collaboration with Xela in the works "Fractal Hair Geometry" is Richter's most refined and original work to date, picking up where the electrifying drone works of his monumental Double-LP left off. Like the last records this album is centered around recordings of a variety of vintage organs. While "Wir können leider..." often featured pure harmonium sounds and spacious recordings of chuch organ and mellotron, the new album opts for a more electronic, effects-laden sound, sending an old Farfisa Compact Deluxe and Casio SK-5 through an armada of analogue & digital effects pedals. The results are massive one-chord drones layered into dense & ecstatic, flickering & pulsating clusters of psychedelic electronic sound. Additional wordless vocal effects, hyperventilating & sizzling drum machines and hypnotic violin and guitar noises make for a hyperactive sound that never stands still even though most of the music is pure drones (sometimes consisting of more than 50 recording layers). Decidedly simple but gorgeous melodies shine through the mist from time to time, making a Black To Comm record always much more accessible than your average drone album. There's even a heavy 4/4 bass drum smuggled into a track dedicated to the late Leigh Bowery, one of the most enigmatic creative figures of the mid-80's UK club scene (and singer of Minty). Guests include Jonna Karanka (aka Kuupuu) on piano, Guido Möbius on trumpet and current Black To Comm (live) band members Renate Nikolaus on violin and Ulf Schütte (of Datashock, Aosuke, etc.) adding electronic sounds. Along the lines of the music, seminal German artist Oliver Ross has created a massive multi-layered neon-coloured collage artwork that is printed on special ultra-heavy cardboard stock.

Bruni, Carla
Comme Si de Rien N'Etait
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The title of Carla Bruni's 2008 album, Comme Si de Rien N'Etait (As If Nothing Had Happened), is a good joke. After all, since her last album Bruni fell into a whirlwind romance with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and ended up marrying him and becoming the "First Lady" of France. That's a pretty big "something," and indeed it isn't often that the romance of a singer and a president is chronicled on record as it is here -- though you need to be fluent in French to catch the details, since only her cover of '50s pop classic "You Belong to Me" (which is a witty nod to a semi-scandalous trip the couple took to Egypt and other exotic locales before they were wed) is in English. You don't need to know exactly what's going on lyrically, because the intimate-sounding arrangements on the ballads and the light and breezy sound of the more uptempo tunes clue you in that there is romance in the air. Along with the nice arrangements, the best thing about the album is Bruni's intimate and sultry singing. She can purr like a Gainsbourg girl, strut sassily, or croon quite tenderly -- sometimes all within the same song. Most of the time she sounds like you always hoped a '60s French bombshell would sound but never quite did (think Bardot or Birkin). Not surprisingly, Bruni appears totally in control throughout the album, which could be down to her having written almost all of the songs herself, or could be down to her new position in the world. Whatever the reason, it makes for quite an improvement over her previous album, No Promises, and fulfills the promise of her charming debut, Quelqu'un M'a Dit. It is probably the best album released by a "First Lady," but beyond that, it's a pleasant, sometimes compelling album by a singer/songwriter with some stories to tell and a lovely way of telling them."

Best start building the Marcus Garvey tug now.

Byrds
Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde
PS, US A key transitional touchstone in The Byrds' fabled canon, 1969's Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde was the next stop in the band's pioneering country-rock trajectory and the first album by the post-Gram Parsons lineup. With leader Roger McGuinn at the helm of a stellar new edition of the band featuring guitar god Clarence White, drummer Gene Parsons, and bassist John York, Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde sees The Byrds bridging the gap between the psychedelic flights of the group's mid-'60s albums and the down-home, country-based style developed only months earlier with Sweetheart of the Rodeo. In addition to containing strong McGuinn originals ("King Apathy III," "Old Blue"), more of the band's beloved interpretations of Bob Dylan classics ("This Wheel's on Fire" and a medley blending The Bard's "My Back Pages" with Jimmy Reed's "Baby, What You Want Me to Do"), and even a Gram Parsons collaboration (the bemusing "Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man," which cleverly celebrates The Byrds' love of country music while simultaneously taking a dig at small-minded rednecks), Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde also boasts two tracks composed by McGuinn for the obscure, racy '60s cult movie Candy. Mastered from the original Columbia Records analog master reels, Sundazed's exact reproduction of the original LP will have Byrdmaniacs everywhere soaring to high heaven!

Coldplay
Viva La Vida
PS, US When Coldplay sampled Kraftwerk on their third album, X&Y, it was a signifier for the British band, telegraphing their classicist good taste while signaling how they prefer the eternally hip to the truly adventurous; it was stylish window dressing for soft arena rock. Hiring Brian Eno to produce the bulk of their fourth album, Viva la Vida, is another matter entirely. Eno pushes them, not necessarily to experiment but rather to focus and refine, to not leave their comfort zone but to find some tremulous discomfort within it. In his hands, this most staid of bands looks to shake things up, albeit politely, but such good manners are so inherent to Coldplay's DNA that they remain courteous even when they experiment. With his big-budget production, Eno has a knack for amplifying an artist's personality, as he allows bands to be just as risky as they want to be -- which is quite a lot in the case of U2 and James and even Paul Simon, but not quite so much with Coldplay. And yet this gentle encouragement -- he's almost a kindly uncle giving his nephews permission to rummage through his study -- pays great dividends for Coldplay, as it winds up changing the specifics without altering the core. They wind up with the same self-styled grandiosity; they've just found a more interesting way to get to the same point. Gone are Chris Martin's piano recitals and gone are the washes of meticulously majestic guitar, replaced by orchestrations of sound, sometimes literally consisting of strings but usually a tapestry of synthesizers, percussion, organs, electronics, and guitars that avoid playing riffs. Gone too are simpering schoolboy ballads like "Fix You," and along with them the soaring melodies designed to fill arenas. In fact, there are no insistent hooks to be found anywhere on Viva la Vida, and there are no clear singles in this collection of insinuatingly ingratiating songs. This reliance on elliptical melodies isn't off-putting -- alienation is alien to Coldplay -- and this is where Eno's guidance pays off, as he helps sculpt Viva la Vida to work as a musical whole, where there are long stretches of instrumentals and where only "Strawberry Swing," with its light, gently infectious melody and insistent rhythmic pulse, breaks from the album's appealingly meditative murk. Whatever iciness there is to the sound of Viva la Vida is warmed by Martin's voice, but the music is by design an heir to the earnest British art rock of '80s Peter Gabriel and U2 -- arty enough to convey sober intelligence without seeming snobby, the kind of album that deserves to take its title from Frida Kahlo and album art from Eugene Delacroix. That Delacroix painting depicts the French Revolution, so it does fit that Martin tones down his relentless self-obsession -- the songs aren't heavy on lyrics and some are shockingly written in character -- which is a development as welcome as the expanded sonic palette. Martin's refined writing topics may be outpaced by the band's guided adventure, but they're both indicative that Coldplay are desperate to not just strive for the title of great band -- a title they seem to believe that they're to the manor born -- but to actually burrow into the explorative work of creating music. And so the greatest thing Coldplay may have learned from Eno is his work ethic, as they demonstrate a focused concentration throughout this tight album -- it's only 47 minutes yet covers more ground than X&Y and arguably A Rush of Blood to the Head -- that turns Viva la Vida into something quietly satisfying. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Doormouse
Stanley Yerkowski presents: Xylophone Jism as The Ridiculator
PS, UK So way, way, way back in 1994 Dan Doormouse first starting making hardcore techno in Milwaukee Wisconsin, then one day he stumbled upon a Sun Ra record and thus, "Breakcore" in the United States of America was born. He began the legendary Addict and Distort record labels soon after, and began releasing the most fucked up high intensity music the world has ever seen. The nephew of Lemme from motorhead (really, no shit!), Dan soon started performing solo and with his band Meat around Milwaukee in the Midwest of the US, gaining a massive following of renegades, speed freaks and social workers. Somehow, Mike Paradinas (Mu-ziq) took notice, and "Broken" was Dan's first major CD release in 2002 on the Planet Mu record label. Es
Sateenkaarisuudelma
PS, FINLAND Originally released as a 2LP by the (K-RAA-K)³ label in 2005, Sateenkaarisuudelma is Fonal label-head Sami Sänpäkkilä's fourth solo album under the name Es. The 2CD release is a trilogy containing three independent parts: "Sateenkaarisuudelma," "Maailmankaari" and "Pianokaari." Sateenkaarisuudelma was conceived from live songs performed on tour with Black Forest/Black Sea's Miriam Goldberg on cello, Jeffrey Alexander on guitar and effects, and Fursaxa's Tara Burke on vocals and keyboard. "Maailmankaari" I and II were recorded at Boston's WMBR radio station. Featuring rushing piano cadences and stabs, the sounds of burbling streams and static, softly chanting vocals, spectral, psychedelic ambience, dark koan/drones and endlessly looped guitar and electronics, this double album is a contemplative journey into a sound quite beyond freak-folk or Finnish quaintness. Other musicians include members of Kemialliset Ystävät, Kiila and Lau Nau.

Faint, The
Fasciinatiion
PS, US Their 1st album in 4 years through their own, newly-formed label. In certain ways, the album is the most mechanical & precise of the band's work: the vocals sound less human than ever before; the bass lines are more mangled, keyboards spiral & squeal out of control; electronic pings & stabs invade the melodies; the lyrical anxiety & disdain of previous albums pervades almost every song.

Foster, Josephine
This Coming Gladness
PS, UK This is Colorado-based Josephine Foster's (Born Heller, The Supposed) debut release for Bo Weavil Recordings, and her third full-length album. This Coming Gladness is the highly-awaited follow-up to 2006's A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing on Locust. This Coming Gladness is transcendental fin de siècle songs from one of the great unsung voices and songwriters of our modern times. Josephine Foster unites rarely united royal realms: self-penned operatic art songs cast in freely-rendered blues with electric guitars and drums beating the path along with harp and piano flourishes. She has a voice that was trained for opera, but creaks like ancient mountain folk floating out from a dusty Victrola. She surpasses any "weird-folk" labelling through the sheer timelessness of her songcraft -- making baroque balladry sound new yet remembered from some not-too distant shared American past. Joining her on this recording is electric guitarist Victor Herrero and drummer Alex Nielson.

Garnett, Gale and the Gentle Reign
S/T
PS, UK Like a lot of folk-pop performers who began their careers in the early- to-mid-'60s, by the end of the decade Gale Garnett seemed to have drifted into the rock and psychedelic scene, hooking up with the band The Gentle Reign to cut these two bizarre albums for CBS. Singer, journalist, actress (from cult 60s movie Mad Monster Party to My Big Fat Greek Wedding), star of Scopitones (check Youtube for some delights!), Gale Zoe Garnett is a marvel and a one-off. Listening to this album one has to wonder who is she taking on here? Bobby Gentry with her smoky voice and good looks, Grace Slick with her swooping rock stylings, or even Frank Zappa with the satirical tone and radio acting? Gale Garnett is a law unto herself. Rev-Ola is proud to bring you her two ndeservedly obscure late 60s albums with The Gentle Reign, a mere smidgen of the woman s immense and unique talent. ** Re-mastered in top Rev-Ola style by Norman Studio 3 Blake and with beautiful repackaging for a beautiful lady! ** Includes both amazing albums in their entirety! ** A must for all fans of out-there psych, sexy femme pop, avant-garde stylings and cult 60s artefacts!

Halstead, Neil
Oh! Mighty Engine (ON SALE)
PS, US New solo album from Slowdive/Mojave 3 mainman... In the late '90s Neil fronted a band called Slowdive, and after a couple of really good records they split. From there Neil formed his current band Mojave 3, who have released 4 records to date with a few more to come, we hope. Hard to find 2 bands with more critical accolades, and at the core of those bands was Neil and his songwriting. Oh! Mighty Engine is the name of Neil's newest solo record. It is a record that can handle excessive listens and seems to absorb every mood. It is really hard to find a record that can make you happy, sad, and can make you laugh all at once. He writes songs that are very personal to him, and then allows space for everyone to take their own meaning away from his lyrics ("Go skies and thrones and wings. And poetry and things" from the song "Elevenses"). Neil is an old soul and his newest solo record is exactly who he is. Welcoming, warm, clever and kind.

The Encyclopedia of Swedish Punk 1977-1987
PS, US Beautifully produced hardcover edition, 320 pages, full color. Kinda unbelievable in that same way that all "unbelievable" things are, I mean how does this book exist?! "Do you get nostalgic shivers down your spine when someone mentions the word punk? Are you a real geek when it comes to record collecting? Have you ever wondered what was out there -- deep in the underground of the Swedish punk scene? Then this book is for you! Find out everything you want to know about leading acts such as Ebba Grön, KSMB, Attentat, Anti Cimex, Mob 47, Asta Kask and Strebers. But also about every other band that ever released a record during the first ten years of punk music! In this book you will find all the facts: line-ups, home towns, biographies and complete, fully illustrated discographies with all sleeves depicted in full color. The discographies detail variations in vinyl pressings and covers, colored vinyl existence -- and just about everything else of interest for any serious collector of Swedish punk records. Finally, you get to see the full output from legendary bands such as Vicious Visions, Shas, Absurd, Kriminella Gitarrer, 57 KEZ, Kessler Jugend, Bad Boo Band and other similar acts. Over the years, early Swedish punk has obtained a cult reputation among music fans all over the world and some records will fetch ridiculously high prices at auctions. Those records were often pressed in a very small series by private labels. This book includes Premium Publishing's established price guide indication ratings, showing the current status among collectors for each and every entry! It has taken the author some ten years to collect the massive amount of information contained in this book. Premium Publishing is now very proud to present the definitive reference guide to all the recording acts during the first ten innovative years of the Swedish punk era!"

Keith
The Adventures Of Keith
PS, UK Keith scored a massive worldwide hit in 1967 with the record 98.6, which featured on our release Keith Ain't Gonna Lie (RPM 273), and is the subject of an entire column in this months Mojo Magazine. We are pleased to present Keith s 1969 self penned LP, The Adventures of Keith, which is reissued for the first time, and is also on CD for the first time. A striking set which tells the story of a boy, Charley Cinders, who is born [Waiting to Be]; he's blind [Alone On The Shore]; the trials and tribulations he has to deal with [Marstrand, China Clipper, The Problem, Elea-Elea, Trixon's Election] and ultimately his own demise [Charley Cinders]. In production the music speaks loudly of Keith's British pop influences and the arrangements twist and turn in such a way that they could only be from a songwriter enthralled with Sgt Pepper. All of which explains why The Adventures Of Keith fell through the cracks in mainstream 1969 America, only to become a highly sought-after soft rock collectable in recent years. Full story inside from a new interview with Keith (aka Barry Keefer).

Leinonen, Ville
Suudelmitar
PS, FINLAND Originally released on CD by Poko Records in 2004, this is the debut full-length release by Ville Leinonen. This is a musical journey to the shores of imagined inner lands and to the Scandinavian forests of hopes and dreams. These songs are moments of beauty from nature, cities and villages. It's autumn in Finland. Freezing wind blows from Itämeri -- the sea. Rain washes the streets of Helsinki. Suudelmitar expresses knowing and understanding foreign cultures as they appear in common everyday life and music. Sweet and nostalgic flamenco-styled guitar and strident, trilling flute evoke a troubadour, street musician vibe. Bossa nova grooves are carefully orchestrated with horns and male and female jazz duets, and there's even a surprising sitar jam. Laid-back indie lounge for world travellers riding on a joyful breeze.

Lights Out Asia
Eyes Like Brontide
PS, US Once a band has developed a sound that is undeniably theirs it can be difficult to push beyond those confines and expand the sound into new territory. Lights Out Asia set out to do just that and have succeeded in writing a record that was as much a sign of the times as it was an expansion of their aural bubble that has been their watermark. They have been called ethereal, post-shoegaze and sleep-rock, but on their third full length "Eyes Like Brontide" the band slides into a darker more ominous and less lucid dream than on previous efforts. The release is a stylistic shift from the sweet lullabies of their debut "Garmonia" (Sun Sea Sky) and the electronic drum driven post-shoegaze of 2007's "Tanks and Recognizers" (n5MD). The song dynamics on the album deserve special attention. For the first time in Lights Out Asia's history they have gone for broke with some of the most epic drum machine driven post-rock this side of the Pacific along with solemn disconnected passages of dream nourished sonic. The occasional floating vocal and dusty winding guitar they are known for are still present, but "Eyes Like Brontide" brings a whole new dimension to the Lights Out Asia ethos. Most importantly, the band has expanded upon its sound without throwing away the original blueprint or alienating its fan base. "Eyes Like Brontide" is recommended for fans of Hammock, Bitcrush, Robin Guthrie and Manual.

Lollipop Shoppe, The
Just Colour
PS, UK One of the MUST HAVE Garage Rock classics! Originally known as The Weeds and featuring Fred "Deep Soul" Cole, The Lollipop Shoppe sound amazingly modern! After The Weeds signed to UNI Records, their new manager, the infamous "Lord" Tim Hudson, insisted they change their name to The Lollipop Shoppe to fit in with the current trend of bizarrely named bubblegum groups. The band's actual recordings are hardly bubblegum, but instead a mix of crunching garage rock and wild psychedelia. The album and its single, You Must Be a Witch, are period classics and still prized by collectors, though neither made the charts. The band opened for stars such as Janis Joplin and The Doors, and appeared in the biker movie Angels from Hell. They were to regroup as The Weeds once out of "Lord" Tim's clutches, and Fred Cole was to lead cult band Dead Moon. But it is for this, the classic Just Colour, that The Lollipop Shoppe are justly acclaimed.

Machinefabriek
Dauw
PS, GERMANY Machinefabriek is the alias for Rutger Zuydervelt currently residing in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Since 2004 Zuydervelt has unleashed an uncountable number of self-released 3"CD's (his format of choice) in lovingly designed sleeves (all made by himself). In the past years some of these releases have been compiled into amazing albums such as "Slaapzucht" on the Root Strata label, "Weleer" on Lampse, the "Cello Recycling" 10"/CD on Type Records and "Bijeen" on Kning Disk. Recent collaborations with Stephen Vietiello (on the 12K label), Freiband, Steinbrüchel and other likeminded artists have expanded the horizon veritably. Machinefabriek's music has been remixed by the likes of Xela, Lesser, Svarte Greiner, Alva Noto, Pita, Kim Cascone, Ben Frost, Black To Comm and others. Only few Machinefabriek material has been recorded specifically for an album release but these have always been stand-outs in the vast catalogue. Both "Marijn" on Lampse and "Ranonkel" on Burning World Records were classic recordings, squeezing a large amount of what people love about Zuydervelt's music into one album, at the same time giving him the space to expand on new ideas. Likewise "Dauw" is one of Zuydervelt's most subtle & quiet yet refined works. Mainly built around small but gorgeous melodies of piano and guitar playing and the crackling sound of dusty vinyl samples, these songs slowly build into intensive hymn-like angel choirs of sheer heavenly beauty. Zuydervelt's output often has drawn comparisons to the likes of Fennesz, Godspeed, Arvo Pärt, Basinski, Tim Hecker, Phillip Jeck, Mogwai and Earth, which is certainly not all wrong and some of these have been influences in the early stages of his career but he has since developed a strong and individual language all of his own. Mastered by Guiseppe Ielasi with elegant artwork by Zuydervelt himself; metallic print on grey cardboard stock.

Meters
Kickback
PS, US No city marches to a funkier beat than New Orleans, and no Crescent City band ever upheld the joyous second-line tradition with prouder panache than the Meters. Their eight classic 1969-1977 albums for Josie, Reprise, and Warner Bros.--all of them available on Sundazed--signaled a new and exciting era of Big Easy funk. Now it's time to dig a little deeper: Kickback--in essence, the Meters album that never was--gathers precious rarities from the Meters' mid-'70s Fire On The Bayou/Trick Bag period, including previously unissued gems, newly unearthed alternate versions, and a treasure trove of blistering funk sure to delight fans of the legendary group.

Michael Night
I'm Not Entirely Clear How I Ended Up Like This
PS, UK "I'm Not Entirely Clear How I Ended Up Like This" is the debut UK release for Dublin/Berlin beat combo Michael Knight and represents the logical progression in their ongoing musical argument that influences as diverse Beethoven, Bach and Bacharach can make compelling bedfellows. The result is 11 slices of the most irresistibly sophisticated pop music and, as further evidence of their genius, the album has been released with instrumental and vocal versions of each song. Imagine Modesst Mussorgsky backing Jens Lekman and you're halfway there. The presence of Brian O'Shaughnessy (The Clientele, Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine) on mixing duties should give an indication of the sonic palette on offer: sweeping strings, haunting harmonies and dramatic mood swings. The Cd comes in a double Cd gatefold digipak, complete with liner notes & lyrics. REVIEWS: "Why Michael Knight aren't already huge is both baffling and beguiling; but sooner or later these songs will be discovered. I may as well say it in advance, then; I told you so". SoundsXP. "Supremely beautiful songs, which have a heart, a soul, a wry sense of humor and none of that upsetting necessity to make every lyrical couplet rhyme" In Dublin.

Music Go Music
Reach Out
PS, US Like a bolt from Zeus, MUSIC GO MUSIC have struck again with their new 12" single, 'Reach Out.' This outing finds them exploring a darker side of pop music; the place where Deep Purple's brute force meets the Carpenter's tragic wistfulness, where Blondie's power-hooks cross melodic swords with Meat Loaf's drama-rock theatrics. They've expanded their palette considerably, yet the sound is unmistakably theirs, and the magic of it points the way to the light at the end of the tunnel. 'Reach Out' is the monologue of a would-be savior, offering to lift us from the pit of despair. It treks from Logan's Run ambience to proto-metal riffing to disco-gallop to TV detective funk and back again.

Near The Parenthesis
L'Eixample
PS, US Near the Parenthesis follows up 2007's "Of Soft Construction" with "L'Eixample," Tim Arndt's most focused work to date. L'Eixample draws on inspiration gained during travels through Barcelona, Spain. Of particular interest was the innovative and sometimes peculiar modernist architecture of the L'Eixample district. In Catalunyan, L'Eixample literally means an extension, a strong symbolic parallel to the music found on Arndt's latest work which itself reflects an extension of the Near the Parenthesis' sound. While this collection begins where "Of Soft Construction" left off, it quickly migrates to an even calmer and more atmospheric experience. Through L'Eixample, Arndt has moved closer to an emotional apex and provides even greater melodic rewards.

Normanoak
Estra
PS, US NORMANOAK has another piece of vinyl to share with the world, a true follow up to last year's "A Double Gift of Tongues". This new album is called "Estra", named after a powerful horned goddess whom Normanoak has been busy invoking recently in small performance spaces around the country. Everything was recorded in his bedroom in Bloomington, Indiana, on three different tape machines. The music on "Estra" shows more variety than any of his previous efforts. Chugging rock songs burn up into soft, dark dirges that feature a uniquely made-up language code. Screaming minute-long hardcore songs fade into freaky, fucked instrumentals. There is even a song which curses the current state government, and their excessive logging of Normanoak's home forests of Southern Indiana. Throughout these 14 pieces, Normanoak takes on many personalities, such as his alter-ego Poisonoak. Over time the listener can begin to notice the shifts in perspective that the singer makes. Normanoak is more than just another musician. His work is pure sorcery at its most successful.

Paavoharju
Laulu Laakson Kukista
PS, FINLAND This is the highly-anticipated second full-length release on Fonal Records from Finland's Paavoharju, a collective formed around two brothers -- Lauri and Olli Ainala and their troupe of associates. The group is a collective project of ascetic born-again Christians. Laulu Laakson Kukista (A Song About Flowers of the Valley) evokes the sounds of raindrops falling on a sheet metal roof melting together with an old television's random dot-pattern noise. Backwards pianos, backwards vocals, tilted organ and baroque beats lean against sweeping operatic soundscapes and gossamer back-porch folk singalongs. Leena Uotila's soft voice echoes in empty, dusty rooms. Cat-owls gather to the skies, apple trees are blooming and waves rock a barrel against the pier. Suddenly all this started to form esoteric mildew to cassette's magnetic tape. Mind-bending devotional rock-opera from the deepest Finnish forests. THE ONION: "Paavoharju is part of an intriguing scene that subsists in Finland but seems to hail from a spirit world where the natural and the ethereal blur. The latest of several notable offerings from the Finnish label Fonal, Laulu Laakson Kukista finds the group studiously adrift, with impressionistic glimmers of sound (bird chirps, static, warbly chimes) situated within delicate songs that draw on everything from acoustic folk to the kind of smeary polyglot pop favored by Animal Collective and especially Gang Gang Dance. The group functions as a collective led by two born-again Christians, but the sounds they make suggest Christians of an extraordinarily mystical sort."

Padden, Daniel
Pause for the Jet
PS, GERMANY Since 1995 Daniel Padden has been a member of Volcano The Bear, with several highly regarded album releases on Nurse With Wound's United Diaries label, Textile and Beta-Lactam Ring Records. After his move to Glasgow he started The One Ensemble Of Daniel Padden as an outlet for his solo recordings with releases on Catsup Plate, Secret Eye and Textile. When The One Ensemble slowly metamorphosed into a band of its own, Padden started to record his solo output under his birth name, with last year's "The Isaac Storm" on the Ultra Exzema label being the first seminal result. Over the years Padden has developed a strong fascination for obscure musics from all over the world (re his recent "Epiphanies" article for The Wire magazine): mouth organ love-songs from Thailand, The Ramayana Monkey Chant from Bali, Khene pieces from Laos; so-called world music from Burundi to Bulgaria. Combining these interests with his love for British Folk and Art Rock (This Heat, Robert Wyatt), Kraut Rock (Faust), Free Jazz, the surreal collage techniques of Nurse With Wound and the odd humour of The Residents, he has developed a totally unique and highly personal musical vision without ever sounding overambitious or directionless. Gorgeous song-writing is seamlessly transformed into pure fuzz or string drones, suddenly interrupted by some improvised reeds or collapsing percussion, all within the blink of an eye, and never losing its natural flow, "Pause for the Jet" is already an auspicious aspirant for our "Record of the Year".

Primal Scream
Beautiful Future
PS, UK New 2008 import-only album from The Primals! PITCHFORK: "Beautiful Future is an especially rich title coming from a band with such a sloppy past, but its concise, laser-focussed 10-song tracklist-- bearing the pop-golden touch of producers Paul Epworth (Bloc Party, the Rapture) and Bjorn Yttling (Peter Bjorn and John, Lykke Li)-- suggests Primal Scream's latest high is sobriety. The opening title track features the most joyous, clear-headed melody they've sung since Screamadelica's "Movin' on Up", but in a much different dressing. Here, their Exile-era Stones influence yields to the cheeky glam of Sparks, from the jaunty piano riff, hand claps and ascending chorus, to Bobby Gillespie's wry commentary on middle-class privilege: "Congratulations/ You're living the dream/ In the dead heart of the control machine."

Prints
Just Thoughts
PS, US Quickly following their debut full-length, PRINTS return to stir the pot with a little more pop, their usual dose of psychedlia and an intoxicating amount of dance. Once again produced at home by multi-instrumentalists Zac Nelson and KENSETH THIBIDEAU, the songs here were originally conceived as b-sides for a proposed single for "Too Much Water" from the group's eponymous debut. By the time three new songs were completed, they stood too strong on their own to be pushed out as b-sides, so the decision was made to forfeit the single and instead offer the songs as a stand-alone EP. Meanwhile, DFA cofounder and Hercules and Love Affair producer Tim Goldsworthy fired up his new alter-ego Thee Loving Hand for an epic super-funk remix of a pair of Prints tracks, "Pretty Tick" and "Meditation" (featuring, among other things, the funk bass skills of !!!'s Tyler Pope). To top it off, acclaimed visual artist Toben Seymour directed an eye-popping video for "Too Much Water," which is included here on the Enhanced CD portion of the disc.

Q65
Nothing But Trouble: The Best Of...
PS, UK From Den Haag (The Hague) in Holland, Q65 were among the country's wildest beat groups of the 1960s. Their firebrand approach to the beat and rhythm n blues boom was the opposite of what most of the country's successful pop group fraternity were putting over at the time; best represented with the unpolished, raw intensity of "You're The Victor", their 1966 debut for Decca which shook up the charts and caused shockwaves throughout the nation's living rooms. They continued to crack the top end of the Dutch pop charts with killer singles such as "The Life I Live", and "I Despise You"; took part in a crazy record company promotional stunt crossing the sea from England in a rubber dinghy, and in Revolution, created one of the best debut LPs of the era. The group split up early and although they would make several comebacks as Q65, and also as Circus, and continue to make several records well into the 1970s, the initial magic had gone. To this day the power and impenetrable charm of the original Q65 remains unsurpassed. ** Visually re-mastered in the usual huge Rev-Ola style! ** Beautifully packaged with oodles of rare photos and memorabilia! ** In-depth liner notes by Sir Lenny Helsing with input from the band themselves! ** An absolute 100% necessity for all fans of 60s garage, R & B, beat, psych.

Roden, Steve
Airforms
PS, US Limited to 600. Sold out quickly in 2005. Line just found 100 in storage. Airforms was first presented at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art [ Scottsdale, Arizona ] in April of 2004. The work was inspired by a group of experimental houses designed by Wallace Neff in the 1940's using a process he called airform construction. The houses were built by spraying concrete over an inflated balloon structure. Inspired by the nautilus sea shell, the houses were an investigation into the aesthetic possibilities of structures formed by air, and the psychological effects of living inside a kind of organic space. The installation attempted to reflect Neff's ideas in the use of air as an inspirational skeleton and physical presence in the construction of the forms as well as the audio. Five objects were built by laying plaster over small balloons. The sound work was created using the transformed sound of a breath blown through an old wooden organ pipe. Both essentially built from Roden's own breath. The original multi-channel audio work consisted of five small speakers, each placed within a single plaster form. The version for this cd has been re-organized for stereo listening. The lack of narrative structure attempts to create an audio space in line with Neff's architectural interests in the airform projects. Steve Roden is a visual and sound artist from Los Angeles. His work includes painting, drawing, sculpture, film/video, and sound installation.

Rosenholm, Eleanoora
Vainajan Muotokuva
PS, FINLAND This is the debut full-length by Eleanoora Rosenholm. Eleanoora Rosenholm comes from Pori, Finland and is a project began by Noora Tommila, Pasi Salmi and Mika Rättö. They crafted a genius pop album with murderous lyrics inside the dark stone walls that surround SS-Palace studio. The time came to take the show on the road and the band evolved into a full 8-piece. Weird, almost avant synth-pop harmonies with creepily-sweet Finnish vocals, sometimes vocoded. Combining the best of karaoke-backed dance tracks with propulsive '80s sheen and tastes of Bow Wow Wow/Lizzy Mercier Descloux-esque tribe-pop irreverence. Totally addictive and hook-ridden, like you can't stop eating candy -- this is weird-disco any housewife serial killer would be proud to dance to. PITCHFORK: "Think you might've had Fonal's M.O. figured by now, didja? PS, US Saw these dudes for the first time as a cohesive unit at a recent wiese / wether gig in philadelphia. i've been seeing mat perform as newton for a minute, and known jared for what seems like a decade. in recent years i've been floored by some one-off collabs he has done with matt franco and skeleton warrior, so i was way interested in finding out what those two dudes plus cohort marc zajack (deep fried tapes) had in store. their setup was fairly minimum... some mixers, pedals, and a couple of guitars tuned to untuned. from second one though the most enormous sounds ruptured through the room. i mean, shit was gigantic. every once in a blue moon you could think to yourself "oh, i think that sound is coming from that", but usually it was just a vulgar mess. asked to do a tape while smoking weed out of an apple in the back of the store, even though i remember there being a pipe earlier. i guess that just fit. Soda Fountain Rag
It's Rag Time!
PS, UK Soda Fountain Rag is the musical universe of Ragnhild Hogstad Jordahl, a one-woman indiepop phenomenon from Bergen, Norway. Having released a number of sold-out limited edition cdr EPs for DIY labels such as Cloudberry and Anorak in 2007, "It's Rag Time!" is her debut CD release, containing 14 more subversive pop classics about bitterness (Go!), reorientation (I was Reborn) and the importance of not killing clowns (Don't Kill The Clowns), all delivered with unfathomable sincerity. Imagine, if you can, an anti-folk Nico playing all the instruments in a Nintendo pop garage band. The Cd comes in an attractive high-gloss cardboard gatefold wallet, with lyrics booklet and beautiful illustrations by Peter Danielsson.

Sparks
Introducing
PS, US Originally released in '77, this their 7th album & the only one of their 20 long-players not available on CD. Finally, you can hear the much-discussed but rarely heard transitional album from Ron & Russell Mael's near 40 yr career. Today this sounds less like made-for-heavy-rotation AOR & more like a comment on, or rather series of pastiches of daytime US radio-fodder.

Sparks
Exotic Creatures Of The Deep
PS, US The result of a yr spent in near-isolation, this could, perhaps, be seen as a natural evolution from their last 2 records, on which popopera, rock, & high drama combined to redefine their sound. However, the remarkably exceptional & notably catchy creations are the key that enables many more, as Sparks have said, to "come and meet them."

Supersister
To The Highest Bidder
PS, UK First ever UK CD release for this classic album from the masters of Dutch prog rock -- remastered from the original tapes, with four bonus tracks. Eccentric, accomplished and unique, Supersister's albums are a joy to any fan of original music. Terminal 11
Illegal Nervous Habits
PS, UK Remember when IDM music was interesting? Yes, it's been a long time, and computers have "given us" many cheap, lifeless albums since then. But wait! Here's Mike Castaneda, AKA Terminal 11, fresh from Phoenix Arizona, to prove to the world that it is possible to tame your computer and force it to work for the powers of goodness. Illegal Nervous Habits is easily the greatest album ever made! It's an emotional rollercoaster of a record, with thrills and chills, heartbreaking sacrifice and enough guts and grit to make even your grandmother pay attention. But what does it sound like? Well Johnny, imagine a million bits of information flying through the air, and watch these bits weave and dive like a ballet on PCP. Then, as you're just getting bored, these bits make pictures of your friends laughing and having the best fun they ever had. Yeah, that's trippy isn't it? Well this album is just like that, and MORE.

Vandervelde, David
Waiting For The Sunrise
PS, US Just as there are albums that artists were born to make, there are albums that labels were born to release. "Waiting For The Sunrise" is one of those albums for both DAVID VANDERVELDE and SECRETLY CANADIAN. Upon first laying the needle down, the listener is greeted by a warm wash of sounds that seems to breeze in from decades back. Vandervelde's singular voice emerges from the drums and keys with "When the morning comes, I will be fine, I will be fine, I will be fine" and you're pretty damn sure he will be. The tones may be familiar, but his voice as an artist is his own, new and wholly contemporary, and you feel lucky to be here to watch the emergence. Critics marveled at Vandervelde's songwriting on his debut "Moonstation House Band", the mini-album which had the aesthetic wherewithal to hold its own side-for-side with the classics as a late night jam record. Spin magazine remarked that "at a pipsqueakish 22 years old, David Vandervelde is already generating the kind of indie-net whispering that musicians twice his age pine for." And on songs such as "California Breezes", "Someone Like You" and "Lyin' In Bed", it's clear that the material on this first long-player from Vandervelde is of a higher order - lyrically more personal and stripped down. "Waiting For The Sunrise" is the beautiful result of having extended himself both musically and emotionally.

Breaking Point: 20 Hard-Edged Beat Diamonds
PS, UK This is the Psychic Circle label's second volume of prime beat mostly from the '60s UK, with a couple of excursions into Europe. So here we all are once again, gathered around the notional Dansette. A tottering stack of vinyl awaits our investigation. Is it gear or is it grotty? Fear not, for we do not have the burden of uncertain critique thrust upon us. All the sounds presented within have passed aural muster, and are straining to enthrall the listener. Unearthed, dusted down, and shoved frugging into the spotlight, we have a top Liverpool band recording under a pseudonym, a British soap star, a Dutch outfit who briefly featured a future UK prog-rock superstar, and a band of hard-rockin' sailors, plus a whole lot more. Specially compiled by legendary psych musician and Psychic Circle label-head, Nick Saloman (The Bevis Frond). Artists include: Liverpool Five, Shorty & Them, James Tamlin, The Muldoons, The MI5, The Dennisons, Lee Grant & The Capitols, Hamilton King, Tages, The Dee Tees, The Circles, The Shakers, The Mike Cotton Sound, Lee Curtis & The All Stars, Chris Kerry, Tiffany & The Thoughts, The Moonlighters, George Bean, Kenny & The Wranglers, and Les Cruches.

Action Biker
Hesperian Puisto (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 12TH)
PS, SWEDEN It really is time for Action Biker's first solo album! It has now been six years since she emerged as an artist doing fun and popular live shows and releasing CD-R's in the indie pop scene of Gothenburg, Sweden, which included people like Jens Lekman and The Honeydrips. Since then, Sarah Nyberg Pergament has been involved in other projects, such as Flow Flux Clan, Kissing Mirrors and The Dreamers, whose record "Day For Night" has received great acclaim from different places around the world. Over the years, Sarah has also performed lots of Action Biker shows (some, as an opening act for Le Tigre and The Embassy), contributed to recordings with Lars Blek (The Field), Differnet and The Honeydrips, and all this time, new recordings with Action Biker have popped up on compilations and singles. In brief, when "Hesperian Puisto" finally is released, it means the début of someone with a lot of experienceŠ The record is named after the Hesperian park in Helsinki, Finland, where Sarah lived for a while. She describes her music as baroque on synthesizers. It is pop music built on complex naivety - altogether very accessible music with distinct vocals and a crispy, sweet, analogue sound. Two great-looking videos are also included on the CD. References and Influences: Young Marble Giants, Broadcast, Dislocation Dance, Moondog, Virna Lindt, BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Antena, Francoise Hardy, Saint Etienne, Brian Eno, Ghost Box, Stereolab, Fred Astaire, Maurice Ravel, ESG, Komeda, Cluster, Flying Lizards, Syd Barrett, The Passions, St Christopher, John Barry, Can, Human League, Colleen, Marine Girls, Eric Dolphy, Telex, George Delerue, The Wake, Kraftwerk, Lori & The Chameleons, Differnet.

The modest level of success achieved by the band can be traced in a steady trajectory from noble beginnings on the south coast of England, formed by principle songwriter Michael Gale... And that trajectory shows no sign of abating.

Clientele, The
That Night, A Forest Grew (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)
PS, SPAIN This is the third, and last, of a trilogy of E.P.s the Clientele have recorded for Acuarela. They have always used the Acuarela E.P.s as a way to stretch out between albums, to create a through-the-looking-glass version of the band that shadows the better-known history of their albums. 'Ariadne' experimented with drones and minimalism; 'The Lost Weekend' stretched the foggy sound of their debut to epic proportions. In contrast "That Night, a Forest Grew' is the most commercial and -shockingly- danceable thing they've ever recorded. Part Bacharach, part Television, part Orange Juice, the E.P. shares the pristine clarity, light and shade of 'God Save the Clientele', but adds a new element of summer pop perfection. This is The Clientele as a hazily remembered 1970s cartoon series, all distanced off-key colors; imaginary summer hits, radio waves beamed in from a dream-discotheque.

PS, US Ballsout psych-rock-garage-soul from Long Beach long-hairs: rips, shreds, thrashes... Fans of Wooden Shjips' mind-numbingness and A Place To Bury Strangers' visceral intensity will find this majorly mandatory. PITCHFORK: "Merging psych, garage, lo-fi, prog, and countless other influences, the group easily maintains consistency despite a complete inability to be pinned to any specific movement or trend... It's tempting to be patient and call this disc a stopgap on the way to a triumphant debut full-length. But EP is plenty substantial as is; at 25 minutes, it's only a few shy of Nouns or, more to the point, any number of psych-rock classics from decades past."

Disciplines, The
Smoking Kills (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 12TH)
PS, NORWAY PRE-ORDER @ $15.00, regular price $17.00. New band featuring KEN STRINGFELLOW. The Disciplines--a razor sharp, fuel efficient jet machine blending a full-on, rock blast worthy of AC/DC with anthemic melodies as sweet and singable as ABBA; a place where indie-level humility and charm meets a stadium-sized musical reach. Formed by American indie icon Ken Stringfellow (the Posies, R.E.M., Big Star, Lagwagon etc.) and the three instrument-wielding members of Norwegian chart successes Briskeby, the Disciplines have just released their first album, SMOKiNG KiLLS (Voices Music & Ent., Norway/Denmark). The album has already drawn rave reviews in the Norwegian national media; the singles "Best Mistake" and "Oslo" are bona fide chart hits; the band has been the subject of its own TV special and is on most of the major festivals in Norway this summer. The band was asked by Snow Patrol to support their London show last year; R.E.M. included the track "Yours for the Taking" on their Q magazine mix CD and has tagged the band to support their Scandinavian stadium shows in September. Coming up: a feature on Ken in Elle Scandinavia; festival and club dates in Netherlands, Spain and France; and a partnership with Chess Mobile that will put the band on screens large and small this summer (Chess will release a limited edition Disciplines phone that will come pre-loaded with the album and other features specific to the band). The band has played in Helsinki & Berlin and is looking at hitting both North and South America in the next year.

Girl Talk
Feed The Animals (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 23TH)
PS, US Pittsburgh artist Gregg Gillis (a.k.a. Girl Talk) has scrupulously created music from samples for over eight years. His fourth album on the Illegal Art label, Feed the Animals, continues his sonic evolution towards his party-infested live show and steps even closer towards a creation that is centered on pop musicality rather than attention-deficit sample splicing. Girl Talk has been known to underground audiences for several years, but it wasn't until 2006 that Gillis crossed over and caught the attention of a larger audience. With Rolling Stone, SPIN, Blender, Pitchfork, and even Beck including Night Ripper in their "best albums of 2006" lists, Girl Talk has gone on to be booked by major festivals (Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Virgin, All Points West, Pitchfork, DEMF, etc.), and solicited for remixes (Beck, Thrill Jockey, Tokyo Police Club, Grizzly Bear, Simian Mobile Disco, Peter Bjorn & John, TeddyBears, and Of Montreal). And with roughly 200 live shows over the last couple of years, Gillis has consistently played larger venues to capacity crowds (every date on his 2007 North American tour with Dan Deacon sold out). PRESS QUOTES: "One endlessly entertaining mega mash-up" - Rolling Stone "Gillis' craft is stunning and his tastes are exquisitely diverse" - Blender "A masterpiece that employs an estimated 300 samples" - SPIN "Massively recommended ... the voracious music fan's dream" --- Pitchfork "Media assassins Illegal Art come forth with yet another brilliant Girl Talk record." - XLR8R "Sounds like your favorite mash-up DJ after about 11 espressos" - Entertainment Weekly "Mashes together booty-shaking rap, iconic indie rock, and, uh, ABBA" - MTV.com.

Judys, The
Land Of Plenty [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 2008)
PS, US First ever official release for The Judys last album, recorded but never released! In 1990, The Judy's set out to record a new album with a new Judy's sound. Featuring the lineup that had been established over a number of years the band, including Barbara Donaho (keyboards/guitars), Lee Malone (bass), and Darwin Keys (drums), set out to explore new horizons musically and thematically. Land of Plenty injected multi-layered keyboards and guitars, stacked vocals, a gospel choir, and even a bit of banjo into the band's palatte and sought to realize Bean's vision of a new Americana musical landscape. Broad in its scope and daring in its expansion of the band's definition of itself, Land of Plenty was shelved when the group disbanded before the CD's release. While a handful of copies have been given out, this is first time this long sought-after project has been available to the general public.

Judys, The
Moo [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE 2008)
PS, US The original 'Moo' album finally re-issued on CD for the first time! CD sports seven bonus tracks, mainman David Bean's "Modomusic" EP. Released almost four years to the day after Washarama and following an eighteen month hiatus, The Judy's Moo album has a slightly more progressive sound: richer production values, fuller arrangements and thicker harmonies. As the band returned to the stage in 1985, this was the album that showed the band's maturity and development as songwriters and musicians. The twelve songs on Moo, laced with solid-state irony, well-placed cynicism and standard issue Judys' wit, show the band at the peak of their creativity and acted as a springboard for their live extravaganzas. The album was released with The Moo Tour - a month of live performances across the state which included giant cereal boxes, moving conveyer belts of milk cartons, and a dancing cow while the band donned milkman uniforms. Critically acclaimed and fan-revered, The Moo Album continues to be a milestone in Texas pop music.

Kid Montana
Temperamental + Singles (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 12TH)
PS, UK LTM is pleased to announce a double CD set from Kid Montana, the Belgian electronic pop duo who recorded a string of acclaimed releases for chic label Les Disques du Crépuscule between 1984 and 1987. Temperamental + Singles gathers together the Temperamental album from 1986 with six track mini-album The Las Vegas Gold Rush and singles such as Revisiting Yalta, Spooky, Love May Be Blind and Still Colour Waiting. Featured producers include Marc Moulin and dan Lacksman (of Telex) and Gilbert Lederman (Berntholer). Digitally remastered, the 31 track, 2 hour 2xCD compilation also includes all tracks from the rare debut ep Today from 1982, and three tracks from a final unreleased demo recorded in 1987. The CD also includes MPEG versions of the video clips for Still Color Waiting and Spooky, directed by Serge Bergli. Artist biography: Kid Montana was initially the nom de guerre of Jean-Marc Lederman, formerly keyboard player with Digital Dance and Fad Gadget. After an experimental debut EP on Sandwich Records in 1982, Lederman spent time in London playing with The The and Gene Loves Jezebel, before recruiting American-born singer Dudley Kludt for the second Kid Montana single, Revisiting Yalta, in 1984. The following year the duo signed with Les Disques du Crépuscule, releasing a run of sophisticated electro-pop records, although mainstream success eluded them. The duo split in 1987, Lederman afterwards recording several hard electronic albums with The Weathermen, and with Julianne Regan as Jules et Jim.

Machine Fabriek & Stephen Vitiello
Box Music (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US Rutger and Stephen sort of accidentally met through e-mail. A simple note regarding an ordering question for a CD led to an enthusiastic e-mail conversation and climaxed in a musical collaboration. This all happened in a very short period, both musicians being very inspired by the concept of "exchange," as a means to cross space and time -- Rutger living in the Netherlands and Stephen in Virginia. Most of the time, when (electronic) musicians work together it's a matter of swapping digital files. In this case they decided to do something different and sent each other a box full of (mostly non-musical, or musically non-functional) objects and recordings, with the "assignment" to make music with those objects and all as source materials. As the titles tell, we're talking about an egg cutter, thumb piano, a broken kraakle box, rice, chocolate sprinkles, old cassette tapes, a broken 7" record, etcetera, etcetera. Both musicians made two of their own solo tracks with the box they received, and the last track was done together by Rutger adding sounds and processing to a piece started by Stephen. For Rutger/ Machinefabriek this is part of his most delicate work. For Stephen, it was a new and extremely enjoyable form of long-distance collaboration. Machinefabriek: Rutger Zuydervelt, better known as Machinefabriek, lives in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Started as Machinefabriek in 2004, he released 40+ small run home-made cdr's as well as work for Type Records, Lampse, Digitalis, Staalplaat (Mort Aux Vaches) and now 12K. A double remix cd was released in 2007, with interpetations by Alva Noto, Pita, Mitchell Akiyama, Xela, Gert-Jan Prins and many more. Collaborations (live or recording) include Steinbrüchel, Jasper TX, Wouter van Veldhoven, Simon Nabatov, Frans de Waard, Aaron Martin and Peter Broderick. Stephen Vitiello: Stephen Vitiello is a sound and media artist based in Richmond, VA. CD releases include Bright and Dusty Things (New Albion), Listening to Donald Judd (Sub Rosa) and Untitled/Exchange, a collaborative CD with Michael J. Schumacher (A Question of Re-Entry). Solo exhibitions of Vitiello's sound installations, photographs and drawings have been presented at The Project, NY, Museum 52, London, the Texas Gallery, Houston, TX and Diapason, NYC. Group exhibitions include the 2002 Whitney Biennial and the 2006 Biennial of Sydney. Over the last 18 years, Stephen has collaborated with numerous musicians and artists including Scanner, Pauline Oliveros, Andrew Deutsch, Julie Mehretu and Tony Oursler.

Manhattan Love Suicides
Burnt Out Landscapes (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 12TH)
PS, US "This Leeds foursome's fuzzed-out dream-pop recalls not only JAMC, but also the willowy female vocals of C86 alumni the Shop Assistants. However, rather than revive the sexualized gore of the 80s movie underground-- or the black-leather tropes of recent retro noise-poppers like the Raveonettes-- the Manhattan Love Suicides' elf-titled debut throbs with the giddy vulnerability of the scene that the NME's C86 compilation helped spawn." Pitchfork. The Manhattan Love Suicides have a mission. They want to write, record and release songs on their own accord. The DIY ethic is in their blood. The idea of getting their name out there by writing, recording, and releasing as many songs as you can as a way of promotion is old fashioned at best. This collection of songs is taken from the 4 singles they released over last year with additional unreleased songs as well as some live recordings. The Manhattan Love Suicides wear their influences on their sleeves and never has Phil Spector's Wall of Sound met so cohesively with Jesus and Mary Chain's. The hypnotic noise and feedback are highlighted with a pounding beat and heart breaking female vocals. Just when you are thinking the shoegaze drone will go on the hooks come in and you hear the girl group sounds to keep you from zoning out. For influences think Jesus and Mary Chain, Galaxie 500, The Velvet Underground, The Rosehips, The Golden Dawn, Meat Whiplash... that kind of stuff. Basically these are the bands that every hipster /record store clerk covets in their own collection. The Manhattan Love Suicides feature former members of the much buzzed about Leeds's band Pop Threat. A much talked and written about band that sparked Sonic Youth and Velvet Underground comparisons that released several singles, eps, and tracks that ended up on compilations. Who's songs played by John Peel landed them releases on Fierce Panda and Mook Records.

Minisnap
Bounce Around (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 12TH)
PS, US Minisnap's "Bounce Around" is the first release by members of The Bats without lead singer/songwriter Robert Scott. Kay Woodward takes the lead with her strong but delicate vocals and her own turn at song writing. The same rhythm section of The Bats is there so the comparisons are hard not to make. The folksy Velvet Underground sound keeps chugging along with Kaye's vocals leading the way. Minisnap features the songwriting skills of Kaye Woodward (vocals, guitar) along with fellow Bats, Paul Kean (bass, guitar) and Malcolm Grant (drums) plus Marcus Winstanley from The Undercurrents on guitar. It isn't often that a member of one of your favorite bands steps from supporting to lead role and completely bowls you over. Kaye does so with her angelic voice and heart filled songs.

Moondoggies
Don t Be A Stranger (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 19TH)
PS, US Seattle's Moondoggies play timeless American music. Warm three-part harmonies, gothic Rhodes organ, and wanderlust guitar mark a sound rooted in boogie blues and cosmic country. Whipsmart songwriting leads to hook-heavy tunes that bristle with originality. Shades of gospel, blues, rock, and country commingle, and wall-of-sound harmonies radiate joy and passion. The influences of The Band, The Byrds, and especially early Grateful Dead are evident, though The Moondoggies' lyrical economy and compositional sensibility render these tracks fresh and unique.

Owl Service, The And Alison O'Donnell
The Fabric of Folk EP (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 2ND)
PS, UK If you thought social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook were just devices which sucked you into an unstoppable vortex of wasted time, then think again. A chance discussion between Steven Collins and Alison O'Donnell, formerly of legendary Irish prog-folk troupe Mellow Candle, took place on such a website and out of that conversation came the first fruits of this collaboration. The Fabric of Folk is a 5-track EP featuring Collins' in his guise as main man of the Owl Service, one generation of folk-rock crashing head-long into an earlier, glorious era represented here by the considerable vocal talents of Alison O'Donnell. Capturing the many different faces of folk-rock, the five songs here - two are original compositions by the pair, one of which was written with the Straw Bear Band's Dominic Cooper - are perfectly formed, heartfelt and touching but with more than a hint of darkness. This follows on from the Owl Service's previous release for Static Caravan, the Cine 3" CD (VAN 140), and arrives alongside their debut album A Garland of Song, which is being released on Southern Records. Meanwhile, Alison's former band Mellow Candle have returned to prominence on the back of the newly repackaged Swaddling Songs - their solitary album release - which has been remastered and reissued by Esoteric/Cherry Red. Inspired by a mutual recognition and respect, the pairing of Collins' band with O'Donnell is a dreamy combination. Imbued with a sense of revivalism, The Fabric of Folk is far from backward-looking and instead concocts something incredibly new which, while referencing the production techniques and masterful storytelling of Brit-folk's heyday, is bubbling with new ideas and an inherent knack for crafting sublime arrangements.

Rodriguez
Cold Fact (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 19TH)
PS, US It's one of the lost classics of the '60s, a psychedelic masterpiece drenched in colour & inspired by life, love, poverty, rebellion, and, of course, "jumpers, coke, sweet mary jane". The album is Cold Fact & what's more intriguing is that its maker - a shadowy figure known as Rodriguez - was, for many years, lost too. A decade ago, he was rediscovered working on a Detroit building site, unaware that his defining album had become not only a cult classic, but for the people of South Africa, a beacon of revolution. Co-produced by Beastie Boys/Mos Def sample heavy guitarist Dennis Cofffey. Featuring legendary Motown players The Funk Bros. This album is mastered from the original tapes with new deluxe packaging, including a 36 page booklet with unseen photos, archival material & new notes including interviews with Rodriguez.

Discoballs: A Disco Tribute To Pink Floyd [re-issue] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 12TH)
PS, US Back in 1979, way before the flood of tribute albums swamped your local record store's bins, this curiosity featuring disco versions of Pink Floyd songs came out on Warner Bros. Now, usually when you put the words 'disco' and 'tribute' together in the same phrase, the result is not going to be pretty. What does, however, make this album reissue-worthy is that two of the folks behind this, Claude Engel and Jannick Top, were members of the legendary French prog group Magma, and they were no doubt instrumental in the adventurous choice of tunes on this record. Sure, 'Money' and 'Have a Cigar', which was a minor hit, are not such a stretch, but disco versions of 'Interstellar Overdrive', 'Arnold Layne' and 'One of These Days'?! Not even Syd Barrett in his wildest dreams could have imagined such a thing! It's easily the most danceable Pink Floyd album ever!

Sailboats Are White
Turbo (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)
PS, AUSTRALIA As completely incidental as it may seem, the acronym for Sailboats Are White is in fact SAW. Coincidence? Perhaps, but it's also a pretty accurate musical description. Schaeffer, Janek
Extended Play [Triptych for the child survivors of war and conflict] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US LIMITED EDITION 600. LINE is proud to release the latest audio work from British composer and installation artist Janek Schaefer based on his installation of the same title. Installation Reviews: "a piece to return to again and again... haunting and lulling" [The Wire, UK] "so inspirational, and in many ways very spiritual" [Gerry Turvey] "I was so deeply touched by your piece" [Mandeep Kaur Samra] Red is the colour of Life, of Death, and of Love. Scarlett, my first child, was born in 2005, and since then I have been very aware of how lucky we all are. have been constantly comparing this to the fact that my mother was born in Warsaw in 1942 - the epicenter of World War II. How opposite can two beginnings be? This inspired me to produce the Extended Play installation, which continuously and positively celebrates hope and new beginnings, for child survivors in all situations around the world. The original idea for the composition came from learning about the 'Jodoform' system of secret musical messages that were broadcast by the BBC Service, during music they played was given a particular meaning, which was interpreted by Polish Underground. Discovered from the original Jodoform logbook, that the lovely Polish folk song 'Tango Lyczakowskie', was broadcast on the day my mother was born. Song describes how children in 1918, had been forced to take up arms, in defense of their town. From this tune, chose a short rising musical phrase, and with my arranger Michael Jennings, developed a ten-minute score. Each of the three solo parts was then recorded separately, edited, and cut onto vinyl. In the gallery, 3 x Cello EP's, 3 x Piano EP's, and 3 x Violin EP's are played at either 33, 45, or 78rpm using nine retro record players. These play continuously, and each was modified to stop playing briefly in response to the audience moving around the exhibition. This has the effect of changing and extending the composition, so that it is never the same again.

Souls On Board
Blood Face (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 19TH)
PS, AUSTRALIA Like some unholy breeding ground, SOULS ON BOARD are loyal to an ever-evolving matrimony - beauty and dirt, ugliness and invention, dumb and smart, mind-blowing power and grace. BLOOD FACE is the new EP, the Melbourne group's second release after their "hurtling and assured" self-titled EP debut of 2005. Released by wunderkinds Low Transit Industries, the EP saw the band draw comparisons to The Pixies & Sonic Youth. BLOOD FACE picks up the hazardous extremes of that first rugged EP and beats them into a new shape. A shape with pointed edges, electricity in the veins and a wall of psychedelic sound bubbling under a whip-smart guitar bleed section. While the tunes bulge with shining phrases & stirring twists, lyrically BLOOD FACE grapples with dark visions and uncomfortable realities - these ills given some respite by the pop playfulness of the 6 tracker.

Chemical Chords (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 19TH)

Sweet, Matthew
Sweet Sunshine Lies (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 26TH)
PS, US SPECIAL PRE-ORDER PRICE! New album from Matthew Sweet joined by Susanna Hoffs, Ric Menck and Richard Lloyd. Pretty Parasolly, dontcha think? Without warning, this consummate artist just may have made the album of his life, not by consciously trying to recapture the brilliance of his three milestones, Girlfriend, Altered Beast and 100% Fun, but simply by following his big heart, while hot-wiring the process between inspiration and execution so that there's no longer any distance between them. With tongue only partly in cheek, Matthew describes the new record's sound as "power-pop-folk-rock-psychedelic-melodic-singer-songwriter-type stuff." That turns out to be an accurate general description, but the real intrigue is in the details. By turns achingly melodic and drivingly visceral, Sunshine Lies swirls with relatable emotion and bad-ass attitude, seamlessly incorporating the artist's expansive aesthetic from one end (poetry) to the other (noise). On Sunshine Lies, Sweet intermixes his distinctive brand of shimmering folk rock ("Byrdgirl," "Daisychain," "Around You Now") and signature goosebump ballads ("Feel Fear," "Pleasure Is Mine," "Back of My Mind"), with the album's primary impulse, what he refers to as "the crazy songs." These are heady, arrangement-based pieces where anything goes in terms of tone, texture and performance-the mindblowing "Time Machine," the balls-to-the-wall "Room to Rock," the brawny "Flying" and the Who-like "Let's Love."

PITCHFORK: "While it's understandable to be skeptical of another skinny dude with a mustache, a guitar, and a worn-out copy of The Anthology of American Folk Music, the more time you invest in Shallow Graves, the more you'll realize how unusually memorable it is. Ultimately, Shallow Graves transcends comparison-- which is saying an awful lot, given the popularity of its prototype-- and Matsson is a natural-born folksinger, earnest, clever, and comforting."

Splendid Isolation (Pre-Order)
PS, SWEDEN A collection of exclusive tracks from the Radio Dept., Testbild!, Most Valuable Players, Differnet, Action Biker, Viktor Sjöberg, VED, Peter Jackson, Peter Nilsson, Redmalm, Enheten för musik och melodi, Malkovic, Erik de Vahl, Band in a Box, Flow Flux Clan, Robotboy, and Jian. Between January and December 2007 Friendly Noise released 18 mp3 singles offered as free downloads from www.friendlynoise.se. From the start it was intended to be a one-year-long project. The idea was simple: contributions chosen by us from our extended family of old friends and new discoveries, usually two songs, together with an introduction by the artists themselves and a picture to illustrate and enhance, once or twice a month. This was meant as a complement to our CD releases, and a chance to easily distribute great songs, in cases where the album context isn't necessary. These two ways of distribution aren't contradictory, they're related, as we stated on our website. Soon we realized the series had become a success, both when it came to the quality of the output and the amount of interest generated. So "Splendid Isolation" - our third compilation after "Friendly People Making Noise" (2003) and "Are You Scared To Get Happy?" (2006) - is our way of documenting the series through a selection of the songs and thus giving them a more official kind of release. The record is also a celebration of five years of Friendly Noise as a label. The order of the songs on the record isn't chronological, it's instead our attempt to make the record sound as good as possible as a whole. TRACKLIST: 1. Bognor Regis (Peter Jackson) 2. (Jack) Lullaby (Viktor Sjöberg) 3. Rondo (Most Valuable Players) 4. Stratoscope (VED) 5. Get Nowhere (Peter Nilsson) 6. Hultviksvägen 7 (Peter Jackson) 7. The Bravest Person I Know (Redmalm) 8.
