Parasol New Arrivals • June 05, 2007

Howdy all,

I know that every Tuesday I say that I’m going to keep the jabbering to a minimum and today I’m going to honor those words. You may be asking yourself “but why, Roydude?” Well, I’ve started this Tuesday off with a mild concussion from banging my head on the bottom of the stairwell while using the paper shredder. So, if I start talking about records that came out in 1984, you can blame it on the baseball-sized welt on the top of my lid.

Runners take your marks. Oh boy how our necks are going to hurt in the morning with the likes of Pissed Jeans, Pelican, Shellac, Shout Out Louds, and Boy In Static working their way through the speakers.

With that said, we’ll rendezvous back here in exactly seven days.

Cover the earth,

Royal & Paul

Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

Pelican "City Of Echoes" CD $12.50 (Hydra Head)
Their third record is a series of (r)evolutionary instrumental ruminations on touring and the homogenous effects of globalization. With shorter songs and expanded catchiness, "City Of Echoes" is Pelican's "pop album". After exploring Earth's melodicism, Goatsnake riffery, and Hum post-rock textures, they've now decided to drastically reduce their song length and deliver a driving rock record. "One minute you're being sucked down by an undertow of surging, cascading guitar riffs and crashing drums, and the next you're being lulled to sleep at the bottom of an ocean of soothing ambience. A positively elemental album for scope, ambition, and vision" - Kerrang. "Pelican sculpt triumphant epics as awe-inspiring and unstoppable as shifting glaciers".

Abruptum
Evil Genius
PS, US NOW ON LP!! Formed in 1989 by IT and All. IT had planned to create the band already in 1987 but it wasn't until 1990 that he found the right member to do it. The same year, they recorded their first two demos. There are a multitude of myths surrounding this cult act. The band further became legendary due to the fact that IT was one of the leaders w/in what was called the Satanic Black Circle. IT left the scene completely after several events w/in the circle & threats to him & his family.

Bob & Gene
I Can Be Cool b/w You Don't Need Me
PS, US The A-side is the bittersweet lament of a young man who doesn't have all the hip clothes of the callous attitude of the "cool" but knows in his heart his love for his girl is right. The B-side is a MoDo side that has never been previously issued. It is an artfully constructed Jackson-esque, midtempo track. The recording is rough but as always, the message cuts straight to the heart.

Bonde Do Role
With Lasers
PS, US Riotous Brazilian MC and DJ three-piece Bonde Do Role play baile funk - a flippant, punked-up take on Miami bass developed in Rio's favelas - and yet aren't from Rio. A characteristic of baile funk is its playfulness and mash-up guerrilla-style sampling. Grunge, heavy metal, and cheese were added to the melting pot here. Their SXSW appearances were the talk of post-festival blogs, described in many instances as a "Brazilian Beastie Boys" with their explosive performances and filthy lyrics.

Brown, Steven
Brown Plays Tenco + Live 1988
PS, UK Steven Brown is a core member of cult avant garde band Tuxedomoon. As a solo artist he has recorded some ten solo albums, including Music For Solo Piano (1983), Searching For Contact (1987), Half Out (1991), Nine Rain (1996) and Decade (2003). Brown Plays Tenco was recorded in Italy in 1987 and features Steven's own interpretations of five songs written by cult artist Luigi Tenco. Born in Cassine in 1938, Tenco scored many hits as a singer in Italy during the 1960s, but shot himself through the head at the San Remo Festival in 1967 after Ciao amore ciao (Hello, Love, Hello), failed to reach the final. The suicide note explained that his suicide was a gesture of protest against the jury's taste in music. Never available on CD before, Brown Plays Tenco has now been digitally remastered with twelve bonus tracks recorded live in Italy in 1988. These include in-concert renditions of songs by Luigi Tenco as well as solo material by both Brown (Besides All That, rwf) and Tuxedomoon (What Use?, Egypt , Lowlands Tone Poem). Artist Resume: Steven Brown was born in Chicago in 1952, and currently resides in Mexico City. Tuxedomoon formed in San Francisco in 1977 around the nucleus of Steven Brown, Blaine Reininger and Peter Principle. Following a string of releases on the Residents' Ralph label, the band relocated to Europe in 1981. Their dozen-odd group albums include the classics Half Mute, Desire, Suite En Sous-Sol, Ghost Sonata and Holy Wars. The latest TM album Bardo Hotel was released in 2006.

Claudia Quintet
For
PS, US Since their founding in the late 1990s, TCQ has walked a unique path in contemporary jazz. Unlike most jazz ensembles where the particular musicians may come & go, drummer, composer & leader John Hollenbeck always wanted Claudia to be a 'band' with a sound not only determined by the compositions & the instrumentation, but with the actual players who perform the music. This conception is why Claudia has had an immediately identifiable sound since its inception. Drew Gress-acoustic bass, Matt Moran-vibes, Ted Reichman-accordion & Chris Speed-clarinet & tenor sax all make TCQ the fantastic band that it is. An astonishing band with a huge range of emotional depth & range & with appeal far beyond strictly 'jazz' listeners. For this, their fourth album, they've released an album of dedications. This album & band has wide appeal beyond just 'jazz' fans. ""This is a true ensemble from top to bottom, a sonic equivalent to a hand-woven tapestry.... Impressive." - Downbeat

Cure, The
Three Imaginary Boys
PS, US They recorded their debut album @ Londons Morgan Studios & released it on May 8, 1979. After touring for almost all of '77, the band changed their name to The Cure & rearranged their line-up w/ the sacking of Porl Thompson, giving birth to an unusual power trio. This line-up lasted only for their 1st album, making it unique in its essentially minimal sound. The album was released in the US w/ a different title (Boys Dont Cry - from one of the bands best selling singles) & a slightly different track listing.
Lilith-130

Dactyl
Teething
PS, US This Baltimore quartet's debut storms like an Amrep time capsule being cracked open after 10 years in a deep void. Rhythmically dense w/ a wall of sound, it's an approach favored by most late model noise outfits that most bands have been too chickenshit to attempt for a long time. Lyrically bizarre, vocally cuckoo.

Domm
Yoloxochitl
PS, US Dommm, aka Dominic Tiberio, hails from Los Angeles, and pushing through cracks of those sun bleached and dusty sidewalks comes his debut record on the Los Angeles based upstart record label, Young Cubs. By deftly mixing the electronic chaos of the Tigerbeat6 roster, with the ambient buzzes of Fennesz and spinning it together with pop synth stabs, he creates a warm humanity that takes you from heartbreak one minute to the dance floor the next. Tracks like "Sloth" and "Dad" set angular, jagged guitars side by side with abstract beats and mixing them in a perfect, organic haze. The thumping bass on "With a Statue" and synth outro flash like disco lights in an empty club calling out for anyone in the dark to dance. Taken from a Sandra Cisneros novel, yoloxochitl is an ingredient in tea that helps sooth heartache. Underneath the electronic chaos of this record lies a sense of loss but that same chaos envelops it and twists it into a livable, but imperfect compromise. Listening to "Yoloxochitl" is like watching a hazy sunset over the City of Angels, flawed and beautiful but altogether feeling that you are happy to be alive.

Jesus Lizard
Live
PS, US While the studio recordings of Chicago's Jesus Lizard are part of the canon of 90s indie rock, anyone who saw them knows their reputation as thee live band of that era is completely accurate. This DVD captures the original quartet in 1994 playing to a packed and frenzied crowd at the Rat in Boston. The band's workman like approach to their taunt, pummeling sound is contrasted by frontman David Yow's Dionysian revelry as he whips himself & the crowd into an ecstatic mess. This 2 camera shoot catches all the blood, spit & sweat of a truly killer live band at their peak.

Kammerflimmer Kollektief
Jinx
PS, US LP version. This is the 6th full-length release from Karlsruhe, Germany, recorded by Tobias Levin at Electric Avenue Studio. This band is still a "collective," although w/in the last yrs & extensive touring through Europe, a group of 3 core members emerged from the original line-up. Whispering, a laid-back pop rhythm & something that sounds like an overwound gramophone, these 8 songs leave the wide-screen cinemascope soundscapes of the previous albums behind. With their serenity, these songs sound almost like a sediment of the band's earlier approach.

Ladybug Transistor
Can t Wait Another Day
PS, US On their sixth full-length, this Brooklyn-based collective crafts a delicate mix of hazy, airbrushed melancholia infused with a brighter undercurrent - a promise of good things to come in a country tinged manner that'll have the hardest of hearts melting. Channeling Fred Neil and Bobby Goldsboro, Gary Olson fulfills his promise as one of the more inspired songwriters of the past decade and anchors his current batch of songs with his restrained baritone. The Ladybug Transistor sound more self-assured here, perhaps due to the addition of keyboard and guitar.

PS, NETHERLANDS Announcing a new child to the Sending Orbs family has always been a great pleasure of a special kind, but rarely has the unity of great music and artwork brought us to such mountainous spheres of admiration and pride. Legiac is the well-known and genre-present Funckarma brothers, teaming up with vintage analog synth-guru and professional behind-the-scenes soundtracker, Cor Bolten. This is an album following fully along Sending Orbs' catalog: 70 minutes of unearthly ambient, heartbreaking pads, punching beats and the insane sound-production Funckarma is so known for.

Long Blondes
Someone to Drive You Home
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Following in the shabbily glamorous footsteps of fellow Sheffield residents Pulp, the Long Blondes' debut album, Someone to Drive You Home, is a snappy pop album of quintessentially English vignettes about how growing up is hard to do. The quintet, which is fronted by femme fatale vocalist Kate Jackson, will make you fall in love with their girlish innocence, then steal your boyfriend and break your heart... One of those albums that's honest to goodness fun, and pulling it off with as much pastiche as the Long Blondes makes it one of the year's nicest arrivals. Jarvis Cocker and co. would be proud." Low Low Low La La La Love Love Love
Ends of June
PS, US Initially intended as musical outlet for Kelly Dyson, Low Low Low La La La Love Love Love's full inception came in the form of a sudden, unplanned collaboration between Kelly and vocalist Natalia Brightmore. Instant musical chemistry coupled with a brief period of writing & recording yielded a complete body of bittersweet, forthright folk songs, self-released on the band's own Birds and Rodents label (UK) in 2004. Two years later, after randomly stumbling upon some breathtaking Low Low clips online, Portland, OR label Other Electricities realized there was something unique brewing overseas. The band with the impossibly long name occupied space in their ears and repeated listens only further reinforced the fascination. The two parties eventually got to talking and came to the conclusion that this music needed to reach a wider audience; these sounds just couldn't be slept on much longer. Ends of June is Low Low's second outing and first U.S. release, boasting twelve new, intimate tracks saturated in the same undeniable warmth and familiarity offered on their debut. Here, the music's immediacy and accessibility fails to wane even slightly, building upon the solid groundwork laid in the first album. Natalia's amicable departure and a change in line-up, currently featuring Kelly Dyson (guitar, lead vocals), Ellis Dyson (drums, clarinet, percussion), Chris Robinson (guitar, vocals), Hugo Edwardes (bass), Nick Guy (vocals, percussion), and Brian Lutchmiah (vocals, percussion), has filled out Low Low now more of a band then an "acoustic folk duo". Despite these alterations, no element of overall sound is compromised as new paths are traversed with regards to instrumentation and arrangement. Self recorded and produced in Ellis' bedroom studio, Ends of June showcases Low Low's progressive and deft grasp on songwriting. From the pensive yet infectious "The Way You Play," to the fluid lullaby "Happiness at the New Day," it's near-impossible to deny the resultant intrigue of each composition, and of the record as a whole. These songs beckon to be taken in again and again... Collectively, the band members live and work in and around Manchester, England. To date, they have shared stages with the likes of Regina Spektor and Six Organs of Admittance. Plans are currently being made for a re-master/reissue of Low Low's s/t debut, which should be available in wider release mid-2007. "As acoustic documents of the breakdown of a long-term relationships go, this is up there. Recorded lo-fi style - in a bedroom apparently - this affecting release combines breathless harmonies and fragile tunes to achieve a strange warmth. Also makes Belle & Sebastian sound like Motorhead." - The Crack "Rooted firmly in the world of low/no-fi folk, this is a charming record that recalls the same juxtaposition of fragility and strength of character that suffused the early Elliott Smith albums." - Tangents. For Fans Of: Devendra Banhart, Iron & Wine, Six Organs of Admittance, Nick Drake Songs of Green Pheasant.

Magic Bullets
A Child but in Life Yet a Doctor in Love
PS, US The astonishing debut album by the San Francisco sextet Magic Bullets. A tour-de-force with 10 songs that make friends with the rich traditions of post-punk (Gang of Four), new wave (early Talking Heads) and C86 (The Wedding Present), whilst introducing themselves to contemporaries influenced by these scenes (The Walkmen, French Kicks) with their own secret handshake. Singer Philip Benson's poised, dynamic croon towers over his contemporaries, yet does not overshadow his own band's intricate musicianship - a crafty layering of Felt-esque melodies onto Bizarro-era chords. "Yesterday's Seen Better Days" launches the record with a C86 meets "Ticket To Ride" guitar riff, coyly anticipating Benson's dramatic album entrance. Benson's voice - energetic, yet inconsolable - coaxes the listener into a world in which deceptively bright colors are used to draw bleak pictures. "Heatstroke" is an unforgettable renewal of the classic new wave territory paved by The Stranglers and Power, Corruption and Liesera New Order.

City Of Echoes

With shorter songs and expanded catchiness, "City Of Echoes" is Pelican's "pop album". After exploring Earth's melodicism, Goatsnake riffery, and Hum post-rock textures, they've now decided to drastically reduce their song length and deliver a driving rock record. "One minute you're being sucked down by an undertow of surging, cascading guitar riffs and
crashing drums, and the next you're being lulled to sleep at the bottom of an ocean of soothing ambience. A positively elemental album for scope, ambition, and vision" - Kerrang. "Pelican sculpt triumphant epics as awe-inspiring and unstoppable as shifting glaciers" - Revolver.

Pikelet
Self-Titled
PS, AUSTRALIA Pikelet is Evelyn Morris, a 24 year old musical wunderkind from the outer suburbs of Melbourne who began life as a hardcoreobsessed drummer, and still currently serves on sticks in such heavy-hitting Melbourne institutions as Baseball and True Radical Miracle. But a couple of years ago, something tickled Evelyn's brain in a funny way and she felt compelled to grab an old accordion, a guitar and a delay pedal, and launch a decidedly un-hardcore solo career. The name comes from Evelyn's mother, who used to spoil her kids with pikelets when she was a little strapped for cash. "She always had eggs, she always had flour and powdered milk in the cupboard, so she would just throw together pikelets," Evelyn told Mess + Noise Magazine recently. "It was a really big deal for me, but I found out later that it was just what she did when she had nothing else." Engineered and produced by US uber-producer Casey Rice (Tortoise, Sea & Cake, Ben Lee and countless others), Pikelet's debut self-titled album is a gorgeous, multitiered work of swirling and shifting melody, layered harmonies and charming story-telling, almost entirely performed by Evelyn herself. All in all, Pikelet is a uniquely assured and distinctive debut.

Rubinoos, The
Everything You Always Wanted to Know About The Rubinoos [3-CD boxset]
PS, US Tommy Dunbar and Jon Rubin formed the Rubinoos while still in junior high. After playing a few school dances, they graduated to the club circuit. In 1975 the band was signed as one of the original acts on the newly formed Beserkley label. The Rubinoos made their recording debut that year with the song "Gorilla", on the Beserkley Chartbusters LP. Continuing the trend of bands such as the Raspberries with their engaging blend of innocent bubblegum and power pop, their cover of Tommy James' 'I Think We're Alone Now' made an appearance in the US charts... With a career now into its 32nd year, the Rubinoos show no sign of losing their inspiration and continue to deliver perfect power-pop songs. Shady Bard
From The Ground Up
PS, UK From The Ground Up is the debut album from Birmingham's Shady Bard, a mini indieorchestra of pianos, guitars, casiotones, violin, cello, French horn and samples. Their music is at once passionate, eloquent, tender, bombastic and fragile, evocative of Coldplay, Mercury Rev, Sigur Ros and Sparklehorse. Singer Lawrence Becko, whose cracked tones contribute to the album's bruised tone, writes using a special gift known as synaesthesia, which is the pairing of two or more senses. When Lawrence sees words, they appear as colours. "Synaesthesia shapes what we do in every way and makes me very obsessive," he explains. "To me, every word and every chord have a colour and they all have to match up. So Penguins contains a lot of light blue, white and green colours to match with the imagery of ice and nature. Torch Song and Fires are rich yellows and oranges respectively to reflect their titles." The album joins a loose group of ecologically themed albums that includes Grandaddy's The Sophtware Slump, Pulp's We Love Life and British Sea Power's Open Season. Penguins, Bobby and Treeology all look at the consequences of environmental irresponsibility, Treeology telling the story of a tree surgeon who attempts to preserve an entire forest with creosote and varnish but kills the trees in the process. The nature-loving theme runs not just through the lyrics but through the band's actions as well - they handed out birdseed to the public at one gig, band member Jasmine Hollingum makes craft from natural objects and they once performed in the Victorian bandstand at Birmingham's botanical gardens. "But as much as nature, I think we're influenced by a bigger theme of how people deal with the world†around them - with climate, with living things, with the land, with each other," they say. "We use environmental problems to say something about the wider picture - sometimes personally, sometimes politically."

Sickboy
Musical Therapy
PS, UK Very Friendly, Lowlands and Wood Records are proud to present the long-awaited third album by Belgium's biggest breakcore artist SICKBOY Milkplus. With a unique and fresh sound, this 8 track album doesn't fail to surprise you with its efforts to combine fun and raw breaks. Some say this isn't the usual SICKBOY we can expect - others say you can expect anything from SICKBOY - but what he did on this album is taken all his musical influences and simply made a difference that leaves you feeling of warmth and bass. It sounds like a very personal album. Remarkably are the many synthesized landscape feel atmospheres that overrule the overall sample-based work of SICKBOY. If one thing stands out on the album is it's wicked programming, variation and innovation. It almost doesn't sound like laptop music anymore and yet this album truly sounds like a breakcore record that you've never heard before.

Thompson, Richard
Sweet Warrior
PS, US Literate rocker Richard Thompson's new album, Sweet Warrior, is a return to his classic electric sound, his first plugged-in album since 2003's The Old Kit Bag. Filled with 14 songs of stories of loss and betrayal, the album also contains one of Thompson's most overtly political songs to date, "Dad's Gonna Kill Me," told from the perspective of a nervous young soldier stationed in Baghdad (abbreviated as "Dad" in the song). Richard Thompson is a consummate singer, songwriter, and guitarist. His career stretches back to the late '60s, when he was a founding member of the British folk-rock Fairport Convention. In the late '70s, with his then-wife, Linda, he recorded Shoot Out the Lights, which regularly makes critics' lists of the best records of all time. In the '90s, he experienced another career renaissance with the album Rumor & Sigh and he remains an elder-statesman of alternative rock.

Trembling Blue Stars
The Last Holy Writer (2X10")
PS, SPAIN "The last holy writer" is the sixth album by TREMBLING BLUE STARS, thesecond one released worldwide through Elefant Records. This album is dark, intimate, melancholic and cloudy, but every now and then there are rays ofsunshine coming through the clouds, riding sunny melodic breezes. SLOWDIVE and THE CURE are still good references for this music, but they are toolimited to describe the unique sound of TREMBLING BLUE STARS, a sound that'sready to mingle melodic, sensitive pop with many electronic sounds, distortions, noises, static and even field recordings that envelope thesongs with a nostalgic halo. On one song, percussion is provided byfootsteps on dry branches and shingles, and on another song a recording of dawn on the Romney Marsh provides the backdrop. THE RAIN PARADE, MAZZY STAR and GALAXIE 500 come up here and there: on this album there's folk, andthere's electronica and 80's influences and avant country and, of course, there's the best pop music you can hear. There's no doubt you will fall inlove again with Bobby Wratten's music. They have hit the target again. "The last holy writer" is the proof that one of the most influential bands in indie-pop is at its most creative, daring and inspired, now more concentrated than ever in writing the most beautiful popsongs you've heard for ages.

Vapnet
Nagot Daligt Nytt Har Hänt
PS, SWEDEN Vapnet doesn't stray too far from the band's effervescent pop compositions, although it does sound like they've tidied up the arrangement for their guest Jens Lekman, that features on one of the tracks. Bells, flute, melodica, guitar, and that show-stealing sax blow kisses to one another over a percolating beat, goosing the stop/start melody to that exuberant filigree that leads so joyously into the chorus. Despite the exuberance of the music, an undercurrent of melancholy runs through it.

Beat Chic: Dream Babes
PS, UK We return to the successful 60's Brit Girl series Dream Babes for the seventh time, with a theme that is a focus on the 'Beatier' end of the spectrum. Taking Merseybeat as a bench mark we include a few tunes that illustrate the sounds around at the time Merseybeat struck, such as American pop covers 'Pop Pop Pop Pie' and 'That Boy John', 'the Showband' recording of 'Baby Roo', and Joe Meek's production of 'Hobbies'. Then progress through prime time Beat records, such as The Beat Chics rousing 'Now I Know' complete with swirling farfisa like organ in the middle section, very reminiscent of early Animals. A motif that returns on the Alan Price produced 'Can't You Hear My Heartbeat'. Finally emerging mid decade with a hint of what came next, Motown influenced backbeats and Horn parts perfectly exampled on 'Lets Start The Party Going'. Which is where we will pick up next volume. On Beat Chic we also include a healthy dose of recordings being reissued for the first time, such as those by Polly Perkins with whom we have just connected (preface to a Polly Perkins solo collection). Also three previously unreleased recordings, those by Christine Holmes, discovered in the archives of songwriter Pete Dello where Miss Holmes assisted the pre-Honeybus artist/writer with early demos. You Too Can Be A Beatle - Polly Perkins / Doesn't He Know - Christine Holmes / That Boy John - Billie Davis / Pop Pop Pop-Pie - Simone Jackson / Baby Roo - Eileen Reed & The Cadets / Hobbies - Jenny Moss / Now I Know - The Beat Chics / Falling In Love Again - Polly Perkins / Can't You Hear My Heartbeat - Goldie & The Gingerbreads / Young Lover - Polly Perkins / Tomorrows Fool - Marian Angel / The Folk I Love - The Carrolls / Every Little Kiss - Christine Holmes / Why Can't I Love Him - Jacki Bond / Guess I'm Dumb - Dani Sheridan / Here Comes My Baby- Christine Holmes / Everybody I Know - Carol Friday / You Don't Care - Val Lenton / Gone Tomorrow - Carol Friday / Whatever Happened To The 7 Day Week - Bella And Me / Lets Start The Party Again - Karen Young / Headlines - Goldie

Wagoner, Porter
Wagonmaster
PS, US Wagoner is a true legend. He kicked out hard-hitting honky-tonk anthems in the 50s, pioneered music television with the long-running "Porter Wagoner Show" (1960- 1980), influenced everyone from Johnny Cash and Dwight Yoakam to The Byrds and Gram Parsons, recorded seminal concept albums in the 70s, populated with the lonely, addicted, and mentally ill, and captured the imagination of nascent punks like Alex Chilton. Last year, Marty Stuart - longtime Johnny Cash sideman and torchbearer of traditional country music - approached Wagoner with an unrecorded Cash song written for Porter called "Committed To Parkview". Porter and Marty built an album around the song, revisiting the classic feel of his chilling concept albums, interwoven with barroom honky-tonk. The result is a record of raw beauty.

In Pink (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 26TH)
PS, US Fabrizio Modonese Palumbo took almost 2 years to churn out "In Pink" due to the triple duty he pulls with bands Larsen and XXL. In Pink is a pretty extreme one, swinging between joy and fear, introspective moody songs and explosions of - desperately optimistic - energy. Still it is more a diary than an exorcism, filled with songs about death and transfiguration, including a version of an Irish traditional theme (which also Johnny Cash interpreted on one of his American albums) and Joy Division's classic Atmosphere (which Fabrizio lists among the best songs ever written).

Aliens
Astronomy for Dogs (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 19TH)
PS, US Highly anticipated debut from founding/former Beta Band members... ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Great title...conjuring up some pretty evocative images, but The Sixties 101 would be a more accurate moniker for this album, the first from a trio of ex-Beta Band members' new outfit, the Aliens. Across the disc, the group offers up a primer in virtually everything that made that decade so musically memorable, all wrapped around 11 glittering pop songs... Sheer brilliance this, and without even a hint of the self-indulgence that so defined the late '60s/early '70s. And that's the real beauty of this set, for all its proggy, psych-out elements, every note and each effect within are there for good reason, even at its most seemingly jammy, free-form improvisational... Beyond all the inspired arrangements, exceedingly clever echoes of the past, flawless musicianship, and expert self-production, what lingers are the band's magnificent melodies, be they lavish ballads or revved-up rockers, classic pop from the past for today. Alien they may be, but you'll be begging them to transport you away." (Jo-Ann Greene)

Aroah
El Dia Después (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 12TH)
PS, SPAIN Aroah's much anticipated third studio long player, El día después, brings ten songs sung in Spanish where sincerity lays next to hope: smart, moving, stylistic and melancholic folk pop music that's often orchestral yet intimate. El día después is a record of an intense, harsh reflection. Produced by Raül Fernandez (Refree), who also helped Irene crafting the acoustic and inspired atmosphere of "En el patio interior", an EP released about two years ago. In this new album, Irene's voice sounds new and clean. She now sings every line in Spanish (except for some words in English and French), surmounting all the shyness she has suffered from since she started writing lyrics. Not far from Ida, Mary Timony or Lisa Germano (she has even been called "a Catpower you can relate to"), Irene now turns what used to be folk raised in an American hotbed into a sincere and moving and (often) orchestral pop. We either have to point out El día después is nearly a rupture with Aroah's first two records, or just mention she has chosen to take a new and adventurous path. Irene reveals all of her poetry, talent, humor and shy optimism throughout its 29 minutes. Aroah has grown older, wiser. All of her thoughts evolve in this touching album of beautiful simplicity.

Art Brut
It's a Bit Complicated (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 19TH)
PS, US Much like the art movement of the same name, Art Brut are outsiderish, rebellious, punk before punk, and deliciously libertine. Cozy Endings (CD/DVD) (PRE-ORDER:SALEABLE JUNE 19TH)

This CD/DVD set offers the seeker the rare opportunity to catch a glimpse of the aural and visual experience that have only been available to live audiences in limited locations. Artanker Convoy generates the sound: alien waves punctuated by sly rhythms that accommodate a crowd whether it is dancing, watching the visuals or relaxing. MUX brings to bear the combined visual acumen of choreographers, lighting specialists and video artists to create an ethereal landscape through which the band dissolves and dancers flow through.

Arthur & Yu
In Camera (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 19TH)
PS, US This Seattle duo made an album with soft, layered vocals that float over textural acoustics, "In Camera" is an audible effigy of a time past, and an album made for forgetting and remembering. Drawing sonic inspiration from the Velvet Underground as well as the studio experimentation of Lee Hazlewood, each track is a study in expansion, centered loosely around chiming guitars and swirling melodies. Grant Olsen's hazy croon is lifted by the smooth harmonies of Sonya Westcott (formerly of Rogue Wave), and both reel in the influence of Nancy Sinatra between the familiar crash of a tambourine and layers of guitar. This debut is built upon nostalgia and exudes an undeniably earnest warmth.

Astral Social Club
Super Grease (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 26th)
PS, US Super Grease is a limited edition of 500 vinyl only release from Vibracathedral Orchestra/Sunrrof!/A Band member Neil Campbell. This is a companion release to Astral Social Club's Neon Pibroch cd also on Important. Astral Social Club is the current project of Neil Campbell, formerly of Vibracathedral Orchestra, Sunroof!, A Band and many more. Campbell has been active since the early 80s, and The Wire magazine has said that, along with his friends Richard Youngs and Matthew Bower, he "provided the map co-ordinates for much of what passed for a post-punk UK underground during most of the 80s and 90s". Campbell's approach as Astral Social Club could be seen as both a continuation and a refutal of his work with Vibracathedral Orchestra - a continuation in that it continues the quest into the unknown stellar regions of improvised drone-based music, and a refutal in its espousal of most of the elemental organic rock modes that made that band so special. The focus here is more on alien electronics and overloaded loop disorientation, sometimes even working with sounds more readily associated with the far end of dance music to produce a truly vast 21st century psychedelic sound.

Black Bonzo
Sound of the Apocalypse (PRE-ORDER:SALEABLE JUNE 26TH)
PS, US Domestic release for Swedish retro-psych-prog act's second album. Their first album was a very popular title for Parasol Mail Order. Black Bonzo members include vocalist Magnus Lindgren, new bassist Anthon Johansson, drummer Mikael Israelsson, guitarist Joakim Karlsson and Nicklas Åhlund on keyboards. Black Magic Disco
Self-Titled (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 26TH)
PS, US BLACK MAGIC DISCO is the new all-star band featuring Tom Greenwood (Jackie-O Motherfucker), Maurizio & Roberto Opalio (My Cat Is An Alien) and Ramona Ponzini (Painting Petals On Planet Ghost, Praxinoscope). The project was born out of an idea from Tom Greenwood, former leader of the avant-folk-blues ensemble Jackie-O Motherfucker (JOMF), who invited Maurizio and Roberto Opalio, aka the Italian improv duo My Cat Is An Alien (MCIAA), and their close collaborator Ramona Ponzini (also involved with the two brothers in the projects named Painting Petals On Planet Ghost and Praxinoscope, as well as in the new collaboration with Z'ev) to perform with him for two months of touring throughout all Europe in May/ June 2005. As one can imagine, the result was killer. The music which came out of he live performances was totally explosive, combining Ramona's Japanese vocals & hypnotic chimes with Greenwood's psych-blues guitar attitude & wild turntablism, over MCIAA's alien cosmic flux of electric guitars, space toys & percussions, creating a still unheard mixture of sounds unifying archaic & post-modern, western & eastern, sky & earth.

The original album's 15 tracks are augmented with 12 bonus songs for a total of...27! ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Irresistible guitar pop." TIME OUT NY: "The Bongos' 1982 debut is one of the best albums to come out of the NYC area during the fertile, shadowy period between punk and new wave. A pitch-perfect mediation of the nervy energy of fellow Hobokenites the Feelies and the jangly guitars that R.E.M. would soon make famous, Drums Along the Hudson's concise songs and terse, cryptic lyrics sound just as fresh today. At least eight of the record's 15 insanely catchy songs (including the one that's 29 seconds long) would totally weaponize a mix-tape."
