Parasol New Arrivals • December 04, 2007

Hey all,

First of all be sure to check out the Parasolarians' Favorite Albums of 2007. Our lists are up.

Second of all let me offer my sincere apology to Dinosaur Jr. for forgetting to add “Beyond” to my year-end top ten list. I mean, come on! As Wayne would say, “Have you gone mental”? You know, Wayne…Wayne’s World. Garth knows what I’m talking about (no, not Garth Hudson). Drrr.

I mentioned last week that the new releases were simmering down as the year comes to a halt but if you take a glance at the list below you can see how wrong I was. Sometimes, it’s good to recognize your flaws.

Ok then, cast your eyes downwards and we’ll meet you back here next Tuesday.

Shaaa,

Ol' Roy and Paul

All new kozmic soul-psych opus from The Society of Rockets, formerly known as iconic San Francisco psych-pop collective The Shimmer Kids Underpop Association. Part horn-happy 70s fuzz-soul, part bleary-eyed shoegaze, part California sunshine-pop, the Society of Rockets’ experiment machine chugs on, devouring all darkness and spitting out an ever-soulful array of dizzying psych-rock gems. LP vinyl in gatefold jacket includes coupon for free digital download of the entire album plus a exclusive bonus track.

Jim's 11th Hour Scandinavian Pick

Mattias Barjed & Various Artists "Upp Till Kamp OST" DCD $20.00 (Razzia)
Special Pre-Order: Happens every year, an 11th hour addition, in fact it's not even here yet! Please pre-order and we'll do our best to get it to you before the Holidays, but we cannot make any promises. Mattias Barjed, glowering guitarist for The Soundtrack of Our Lives, created and curated this double-album soundtrack for a hip new Swedish miniseries (about twenty-something rockers in early-70s Gothenburg) that plays out like a gritty retro-rock opera! Features contributions from Barjed's TSOOL bandmates, plus members of Elope, Hipwhips, Jan Martens Frustration and many more. Also includes a new, unreleased song by The Tallest Man On Earth. Check out sound samples on our front page. I'm calling this my Album Of The Year and just in time to take the top spot on my list of fave Nordic albums of 2007! Full list here.

4 Bonjour's Parties
Pigments Drift Down To The Brook
PS, US 4 BONJOUR'S PARTIES is a seven member strong ensemble from Tokyo, Japan. Their debut full-length release, "Pigments Drift Down To The Brook", with it's expansive, chamber-music approach to song structure and production, hints at modern risk-takers Architecture In Helsinki and The Arcade Fire. Alternating between sweet and majestic, the combination of male and female vocals, sung both in English and Japanese, is an aural wonder. Keyboards and wind instruments lay on top of a bed of dream-rock guitar, bass, and drums, creating moments of 60's guitar pop, Neu inspired repetition, and modern electronics, all within the same expansive track. "Pigments Drift Down To The Brook" marks 4 Bonjour's Parties as a band that deserves close attention.

Acnode One
Acnode One
PS, US 30-year anniversary reissue of this LAFMS cassette artifact, in a deluxe gatefold double LP presentation. "When one goes digging into the caverns of free jazz, underground, DIY, improvised or noise music, the Los Angeles Free Music Society is a group that you'll find crawling alongside the greatest artists in its under appreciated history... and future! ACNoDE ONE was created by two of the LAFMS's key members: Dr. Id and Ju Suk Reet Meate of Smegma fame. Recorded in 1977 as a hand-made cassette, side A was Dr. Id and friends and side B was all Ju Suk. With influences ranging from Beefheart, Nervous Norvus, and Ron Geesin through the whole ESP catalog, this is one of the defining examples of the LAFMS sound. They travel with ease from Zappaesque freak outs, teeth rattling tape loop drones; psychedelic kiddy record cut ups, to a beautiful bowed bass solo in the vein of Scott la Faro or Henry Grimes. It marks an important turning point in Smegma's development. As Ju Suk points out, 'It was a time of great transition. With only one Smegma "gig" in two years, our music was going inward. The reel to reel tape decks at the time lent themselves to wild misuse... they were very exciting times experimentally.'"

Aloha
Light Works
PS, US Aloha's most gorgeous, ambitious, and fully realized songs on a 30-minute long mini-album. Richly detailed, moody, intensely rhythmic, and flowing with melody. Aloha multi-instrumentalist and studio wizard TJ Lipple mixes in the studio magic while leaving the free-spirited vibe of the recording sessions intact. Piano, brass, oddly tuned guitars, drums, bass, mallet instruments, and vintage keyboards fill out the arrangements.

Angell, Theo
Auroplinth
PS, US "What can I say about Theo Angell? He's an artist, a musician, a filmmaker, a shaman. He lives and works in New York City, but plies his trade all over the country. Angell is perhaps best known for his work in Hall of Fame and Jackie-O Motherfucker, and also as part of Samara Lubelski's live band. But with the release of Auraplinth, all that will change. This is Theo Angell's opus. This is his masterwork. It finds him at his absolute peak and delivers an album unlike anything else. He uses his voice to etch out a detailed map of the stars, made up of dirt and bone, proving the organic nature of the cosmos. Auraplinth is an amalgamation and invention, joining foundation with the ether. Both of these forces are constantly at work throughout these 15 tracks."

Band Of the Holy Joy, The
Leaves That Fall In Spring
PS, UK One of the quintessential 'Rough Trade' bands of the 80s and beyond, The Band Of Holy Joy are a truly unique proposition. Combining the dark but unapologetically humane poetry of singer Johny Brown with the instrument action of Chris Brierley (violin) and Alfie Thomas (accordion, keyboards), as well as many other more occasional contributors, BOHJ built a loyal international fan-base for their by turns romantic and bleakly humorous songbook. Critically adored, the band featured on the covers of several music papers and magazines in their heyday, journalists citing them as 'pop deviants inside the urban wasteland', or 'outsider art you can dance to'. With the vast majority of their records out of print, this 'Best Of' has been specifically selected by the band, drawing on a catalogue of some eight albums and a similar number of singles. Includes a brand new, never before released recording of 'Real Beauty Passed Through'. Extensive sleeve notes written in co-operation with the band, including fan testimonials, as well as lyrics, unpublished photographs and a complete discography, complete the whole package. The Band Of Holy Joy are current active on the live circuit again, making this the perfect time to re-discover the magic.

Blome, Benno
From Antenna to Antenna 1
PS, GERMANY "Not many labels established in the '90s have managed to achieve a consistent advancement without alienating from their roots. Even fewer labels have created a true brand thanks to their very own aesthetic of sound and artwork that are loved and respected by DJs and producers around the globe. Wearing the fitting title From Antenna to Antenna 1, it contains a 17-track CD mixed and compiled by label-head Benno Blome with a best-of from recent releases that have been released only on vinyl previously. Additionally, it brings four previously unreleased tracks." Bodies Of Water
Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink
PS, US BODIES OF WATER started in DAVID METCALF and MEREDITH ARTHUR'S closet. They were newly married and lived in a very small house. The closet was the only place to put the computer that they used for recording. They eventually formed a musical group to play David's songs. Meredith figured out the piano, and their friends Kyle Gladden and Jessie Conklin learned to play the bass and drums, respectively. In the ensuing years, the four have learned to deftly spin those threads which inevitably weave their way through every Bodies of Water song: ebullient group singing, melodic invention, thundering polyrhythms, and sublime dramatic tension. "Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink" is their first full-length record, and the first release from the band's own THOUSAND TONGUES label. The songs stray from verse-chorus structure but are engaging and memorably crafted, drawing on an admixture of traditions; the transcendent intensity of gospel, brutish gusto of punk rocking, earnest idiosyncrasy of American folk, sonic inclusiveness of tropicalia, planned jamming of prog, and the sincere bombast of musical theatre. These songs can be likened to a sort of emotional topiary; an unruly living mess lent its shape by the psychic framework around which it grows. Since its inception Bodies of Water have added an auxiliary corps of musicians and when playing in L.A. their ranks can swell to as many as 11; hitting, blaring, strumming and bowing away. The four core members' vocal synchronicity remains the group's hallmark. Their calls, responses, shouts and harmonies ride above and around a retaining wall of sound in a fleeting burst of neo-tent revival immediacy.

Bosmann, Karl
Eskalation
PS, GERMANY "Escalating drone sounds like a mixture of Cluster/Kluster and KTL or Sunn O))) with vocal parts in the style of Tazartes and Tibetan monks. Brotzmann/Wilkinson Quartet
One Night At Burmantofts
PS, UK "A long overdue meeting of two of the titans of the saxophone today. Alan Wilkinson (alto, baritone & voice) and Peter Brötzmann (clarinet, tarogato & tenor) together with Willi Kellers (drums) and Simon H. Fell (bass) blow up one hell of a storm. The individuals on this recording consciously commit, putting themselves 'out there,' over the edge. The energy, the electricity, generated by saxophonists Wilkinson and Brötzmann, is a result of their fearless approach to the precipice and their willingness to stare, unblinking, into the abyss. And yet while this music, free jazz, improv, call it what you will, exists at the boundary of our cultural existence, it echoes the sounds first identified as jazz, back at the birth pangs of the modern age. It is the commitment to a collective sound devoid of ego with the fearless individual, that makes this music extraordinary, that provides the moments of almost spiritual communion." JAZZ

By The End Of Tonight/Tera Melos
Complex Full of Phantoms
PS, US Coming off the heels of the scarcely limited 3" CD series - and a full two years after the release of their debut album - BY THE END OF TONIGHT has finally dropped the anvil of badass on us with six new jams. In the two years since the release of their brilliant "A Tribute To Tigers", BTEOT have toured almost non-stop, playing every rock club, living room (or even barn) that would have them. Their relentlessness has paid off, as their half of this split album with good friends and like-minded power jammers TERA MELOS is far and away their most accomplished work to date. Not to be outdone, Sacramento's Tera Melos have also been on the road more than they've been home this year, touring with the likes of Fall of Troy and Horse the Band. Their frantic, absurdly complex songs are the perfect compliment to By the End of Tonight's darker, more sinister instrumental metal. Though both bands play a hyper-catchy, addictive form of spastic punk, Tera Melos brings to mind a hybrid of fellow Sacramento speed freaks Hella and Cap'n Jazz, while BTEOT draws an unfathomable arc between Blink 182 and The Jesus Lizard. The combination makes this by far the strongest release to date from either band.

Chaim & James Blonde
Roxy Feeling
PS, GERMANY James Blonde and Chaim present their debut 12" on MBF, a tribute to Roxy Music. "Roxy Feeling" is hypnotic with sequencers creating a super, seemingly effortless dub-groove in a timeless, stripped-down arrangement. The first and original mix of "Crack" is a traditional synth-driven song, with ghostly voices out in the distance. A more minimal remix follows by Hamburg's Pelle Buys - straight, rocking, stripped-down German techno-house. ELECTRONIC

Crash That Took Me
Orchestrated Kaleidoscopes
PS, US "Orchestrated Kaleidoscopes" Debut record is a colorful blending of sounds brought together to create an abstract pop record. Full of layered textures mixing fuzzed-out guitars and orchestral instrumentation, Orchestrated Kaleidoscopes is lyrically and musically based on the relationship between color and music, expanding their experimental pop into a sonic wall saturated with reverb & a sprinkle of psychedelics to weave a tapestry of visual imagery. Notable influences include Roller Skate Skinny, early Mercury Rev, the psychedelic stages of The Kinks and VU, topped off with Jon Brionesque celesta solos. Guests incl. Brandon Carr (EARLIES) on vocals, Kris Youmans (PAPER CHASE) on cello, Ryan Fitzgerald (POLYPHONIC SPRESS) on guitars. Recorded, produced & mixed by Casey Diiorio (MIDLAKE, [DARYL]) at Valve Studios in Dallas; mixed down onto half-inch tape and sent to Abbey Road Studios in London for mastering by Sean Magee (Spiritualized, Placebo, Paul McCartney)

Dashboard Confessional
The Shade Of Poison Trees
PS, US Vinyl LP. "Tom Petty, Springsteen, Neil Young, and Pearl Jam...these are the people I look to," says Chris Carrabba, the creative force behind Dashboard Confessional. "They do what they want and follow their hearts, going wherever their music is taking them. I look to those guys, and I start to think: how does it work for them? What were they holding on to, and do I hold on to that as well?" With the release of his fourth full-length album Dusk and Summer, the Boca Raton, Florida resident is no longer simply an up-and-coming musician; he's a career artist. Dusk is certainly the most defining album of what has already been a remarkable career; on one end, it's a return to the full band sound of Carrabba's earliest, pre-Dashboard work, and yet also the most forward-thinking and innovative record he's ever recorded.

Draheim, Charlie
Possession
PS, US "Pressure. Steam. Scrap yard drainage, leaking into the corners. Mold and mildew - seepage. Cracks, crevices containing black days and red nights. The infection is spreading. False and forgotten. The Butcher, as he's known amongst friends and enemies, slices his way though flesh and bone on his first vinyl appearance and his finest moment to date. Contaminating the A-side with sick tones, nauseating hiss and whine, the rumble and wet sadism of clogged sinuses led to climax in an orgy of rotten magnetic tape. Mongrel howls and junkyard threats make up the unhealthy flip of this record - the slowest of rhythmic thump wrought in contrast to relentless clang reminding of the new, no, The OLD Blockaders. It ends the second you wake up. Throw your vacant body in the gutter." -Greh Holger (Hive Mind, Chondritic Sound). Edition of 320 with hand-screened textured card stock covers.

Drake, Nick
Fruit Tree [3CD+DVD, 2007 Edition]
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Included in the box are the original three albums in mini LP-like cover sleeves (two of which are gatefolds). Also included is A Skin Too Few, a 48-minute documentary that contains on-camera interviews with Boyd, Gabrielle Drake (Nick's sister), Wood, Paul Weller, Nick's parents (who are not shown on camera), and a few others. The documentary offers few new clues but there are some devastatingly beautiful moments... One thing that is universally agreed upon is that the box should exist in some kind of definitive way, and it has been lovingly assembled with everything getting the grand treatment, aside from the glaring omission of those five cuts. No matter which of his three albums is a personal favorite, the quality of the music is the one thing that cannot be argued here -- it will simply continue to endure and grow in terms of its legend and importance, enlightening and engaging new listeners as they encounter it in the 21st century."

PS, GERMANY This is the second collaboration between these two artists on Traum. Their weekly visits have become somewhat of a ritual, meeting at Ananda's factory for some cherry Danish pastries & jasmine tea. What sounds harmless ends up being a real rave bomb. Eux Autres
Cold City
PS, US Eux Autres (pronounced ooz-oh-tra), a Portland-based duo, plays pop music. The band consists of brother and sister Heather and Nicholas Larimer. Heather plays drums, Nicholas plays guitar, and they both sing. Practices frequently devolve into shoving matches. Eux Autres write compact songs with sparse instrumentation. Their music has been unfairly described as "fun." But while the surface of the songs might seem nonchalant, the lyrics offer skewed observations and fierce barbs. Most of their songs are about a) military history b) being "done wrong" or c) sports. Sadly, Eux Autres are the only people who notice this. The band sounds like the unrequited love song Doug Martsch would have penned for Francoise Hardy, had the time/space continuum conveniently collapsed. Eux Autres' debut 7", was released in 2003, and their first full-length CD, Hell Is Eux Autres, recorded by Jeff Stuart Saltzman and Janet Weiss (Sleater-Kinney/Quasi), was self-released in 2004 and re-released in 2006 by Grenadine Records (Montreal, QC). Galwad Y Mynydd
Galwad Y Mynydd
PS, UK "Gruff Rhys joins the Finders Keepers team once again to produce this, the third instalment in our critically-acclaimed and best-selling Welsh Rare Beat series - combining the 2 ultra rare Galwad Y Mynydd EPs on one album for the first time ever! Galwad Y Mynydd defined a Dyfed-centric harmonic gentle vocal sound. Formed by brothers; Alwyn (17) and Eifion (16) Daniels, their Camarthen grammar school friend Derek Brown (18), and Camarthen Technical College student Mike Harries (19) on drums; Galwad Y Mynydd (The Call of The Mountain) ticked all the right boxes in their quest to deliver in their own words 'a new style of contemporary Welsh folk music.' Choosing musicality over volume, beauty and heartache over protest and politics, they were a young anomaly in Welsh language pop. The follow-up to the critically-acclaimed Welsh Rare Beat compilation and accompanying album to the new Welsh Rare Beat 2 compilation, this album features exclusive liner notes from Gruff Rhys and Derek Brown (in Welsh). Guillemots
Back To Mine
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The Back to Mine series started as a way for DJs and electronica or electronica-leaning artists to compile some of their favorite late-night songs (the first volume, by Nick Warren, was released in February of 1999 and artists like Morcheeba, Faithless, Danny Tenaglia, Tricky, and Underworld have all followed suit). While it's true the Guillemots do incorporate a variety of different styles into their music, and that many previous bands didn't necessary stick to downbeat or techno -- Audio Bullys, for example, had a particularly rock heavy set -- the Guillemots are the first true rock or pop band to put their name on the Back to Mine cover. Some of the choices on here make a lot of sense, like Joan As Police Woman's (with whom Guillemots toured) "The Ride," Liars' "The Other Side of Mt. Heart Attack," and even Sonic Youth's "Providence," while others, while they assuredly hold meaning to at least some of the members, hardly fit with the rest of the selections or the band's sound (Roots Manuva's "Witness (1 Hope)" and Raphael Saadiq's "Still Ray" being the most prominent examples). All of which means that this specific installment of Back to Mine works better for someone who wants to listen to what Guillemots like, not necessarily music that sounds like Guillemots like or even a particularly cohesive mix." Hedberg, Johan
5-spars EP
PS, SWEDEN Labrador proudly presents the solo debut from Johan Hedberg of Suburban Kids with Biblical Names. "5-spårs EP" (mean "Five track EP" in Swedish) is nothing less than brilliant - a splendid mix of electronica, Tropicalia and pop. Welcome to the sound of a true pop genius. In the summer of 2007 Johan Hedberg bought a computer with an installment plan. This new gear gave him inspiration to do some productions on his own. With the motto "fast production and no turning back" Johan's way of working is quite the opposite of the one of Suburban Kids with Biblical Names. The latter is famous for re-recording, re-writing, re-making and polishing their songs over and over again before they're finished. Surprisingly or not, the fast way of making art works perfectly for his solo productions. "5-spårs EP" will be released in a limited edition of 500 copies on 10" vinyl.

Hey Willpower
Hundredaire
PS, US The title "Hundredaire" (let you go) is a play on words of Kelis and Andre 3000's "Millionaire". An homage with a life of its own. No money, same problems. WILL SCHWARTZ from HEY WILLPOWER sings it like he means it; a postmodern take on a love gone awry. Inspired by real life events, and masterpieces like "You Keep Me Hangin' On" and "Walk On By", it's a story everyone can understand. Whether it's the beat of the snare that happened to be there, the Yamaha "Bar Mitzvah Keyboard" on which Will plays the lead riff, or the vocal choir that catapults the simple phrase in the chorus "Let You Go" straight into your heart, there's something for anyone who has felt the highest of highs, and the lowest of lows.

Ito, Hidenobu
Wake
PS, GERMANY "Hidenobu Ito is not really known in Europe, although he already has a list of releases to show, but on the other side of the world - in Japan. Hidenobu grew up in Inagi City, a municipality of Tokyo. Since his childhood he has been interested in game and experimental music. So, he started working as a cartoonist to afford his own music equipment. In the 1990s, he began producing his first tracks, music compilation albums and soundtracks. Up to now, Hidenobu Ito released his music on labels such as Flyrec, Elegantdisc, NS-com, TripTrap, Sub Rosa, etc. The first contact to the Mo's Ferry crew was his track 'Lover' on the third series of the 10" label, Fenou. After that, one of his tracks had been included on the Mo's Ferry Prod. 25 last year. Now, there's his first solo release for the label called Wake. The title track definitely helps to find a proper genre for this EP (like minimal), but it already shows Hidenobu's vision to include no out-of-the-box samples, but experimental and organic snippets." Jansen, Steve
Slope
PS, US "Former Japan band member and regular David Sylvian collaborator Steve Jansen releases his astonishing solo album on Samadhisound this Autumn. On Slope, tension underlies the crisp rhythms and intricate programming, while a collection of distinctive vocalists draw out the sentiment and expression in his songwriting. As Jansen explains, 'with this album I approached composition attempting to avoid chord and song structures and the usual familiar building blocks. Instead I wanted to piece together unrelated sounds, music samples, rhythms and 'events' in an attempt to deviate from my own trappings as a musician.' The album features guest contributions from Sweet Billy Pilgrim, Thomas Feiner, Anja Garbarek, Nina Kinert, David Sylvian, Theo Travis and Joan Wasser (Joan As Policewoman). Presented as ever in a beautiful digipak featuring exquisite artwork from Australian artist Dan McPharlin and designed by Chris Bigg."

Jobin, Antonio Carlos
Wave
PS, RUSSIAN FED. "By the time this album was released, Antonio Carlos Jobim was already an international superstar. Having recently won a Grammy (1965) for 'The Girl From Ipanema,' by 1967 all the big name stars from up north were breaking down his door to work with the new 'Gershwin of Brazil.' In fact, Jobim had just finished working on an album with Frank Sinatra when he went into the studio to record this album. Recorded in 1967, Wave is actually one of the lesser known masterpieces of Brazilian music, and undoubtedly one of Jobim's greatest. Here Jobim and the great Claus Ogerman lead a top-flight cast on hidden classics like 'Batidinha,' 'Triste' and 'Wave.'"

Lets Go Naked
Insides
PS, UK This is 16 track career retrospective compiles singles, selected album tracks, unreleased gems and 2 new tracks from Brisbane's Lets Go Naked. Re-mastered and first time on CD. John Peel favorites. Band now reformed, writing and recording new material for 2008 release - launch gigs in Brisbane and Sydney. Band contains well known Brisbane TV celebrity, news anchor man Andrew Lofthouse and ex The Go Betweens John Wilsteed. Let's Go Naked had an initial burst of activity in the eighties with the release of the album "Everything" on Sydney's Waterfront Records. This album found Let's Go Naked as exponents of the Brisbane sound, with an angular, driven guitar style, incorporating keyboard sounds for certain tracks. Think the Go Betweens early records. The "Three Limbs" single on Trust Records then found Let's Go Naked emerging with their own refreshing sound. This track became a favourite of the late John Peel on his BBC shows bringing Lets Go Naked to a wider audience. The late eighties and nineties found Let's Go Naked exploring this sound, recording intermittently, including the single "Sometimes"; finding perfect moments and moving on to the next one. The new century seen renewed interest in Let's Go Naked, initially prompting the re-mixing of a few lost gems and ultimately writing and recording again. Two recent new tracks appear on this retrospective and find the band in rude form. Recording is well under way on a new album for 2008 release. October 2007 saw a return to the stage at The Zoo in Brisbane for a well received re-union show. Lets Go Naked are Murray Power (vocals, guitar), Andrew Lofthouse (bass guitar, backing vocals and keyboards), Nick Patterson (drums and backing vocals) and ex Go Between John Wilsteed (guitars). Rosalinda McGovern, Martin Thompson, Steve McKensie and Anthony Perrott have also been members and contribute to the retrospective CD.

Libertines
Best Of: A Time for Heroes
PS, US AVERSIOIN REVIEW: "Besides being the best British rock act of their era, The Libertines used their mix of Jam-like riffs, Clash-like energy and drunkenly loose arrangements as a chisel at which to pummel the haughty sensibilities that were at the heart of the English music world. Borne in days when Radiohead's most esoteric albums duked it out with Coldplay's most overwrought arena posturing and the dying remnants of the failed DJ revolution, The Libertines were that much-needed wake-up call that rock didn't need to attach itself to fashions, concepts, cutting-edge technology or the ass end of the print media as a reason to exist. Simple rocking, and rocking well, was always reason enough to exist. Now, with the chaff culled from a pair of already strong albums, Time For Heroes delivers a set that outshines most retrospectives from acts with five or six albums in their back catalog -- and proves that ultimately, the Libertines will be remembered for making great music."

Lightning
Lightning 1968-1971
PS US "Lightning was an offshoot of Minneapolis '60s legends Litter that featured guitar wizard Tom 'Zippy' Caplan. After recording the Litter's 1966 garage classic Distortions and 1968 psych masterpiece $100 Fine, Caplan split from the Litter and formed Lightning. The band started out as a power trio and cut one fierce Cream-inspired single 'William' b/w 'Of Paupers And Poets' in 1968 under the White Lightning moniker with Twin Cities record producer Warren Kendrick. The band regrouped into a quintet and scored a record deal with P.I.P. which issued their eight-song album. That album has since become a highly collectable LP. Lightning became one of the Midwest's hardest working rock acts and toured extensively throughout the region during their three-year tenure. This authorized CD reissue includes their entire LP, the aforementioned 45, plus six additional bonus tracks (including edited 45 mixes of two album tracks) all wrapped in an archival 12-page booklet with lots of photos and liner notes by Litter-scribe Doug Sheppard. Between this package and Arf Arf's White Lightning Strikes Twice [1968-1969] release, the band's entire musical legacy has been properly archived. Fans of Blue Cheer, Cream, Hendrix, and Arf Arf's four psychedelic Dose comps will really dig this new disc."

Lindisfarne
Very Best of Lindisfarne
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Gathers together an excellent cross section of tracks from the three years (1970-1972) of Lindisfarne's first phase, considered to be the band's most attractive and adventurous period. EMI's collection presents 18 tracks of the group's finer moments from Nicely Out of Tune, Fog on the Tyne, and Dingly Dell, plus two previously unreleased recordings tacked on at the end. Opening with the band's two biggest hits ("Meet Me on the Corner" and "Lady Eleanor"), The Very Best of Lindisfarne immediately showcases how diverse the group was with psychedelic folk and British Invasion-tinged pop, with clever orchestration and the rawer elements of soft rock creeping to the surface. Perhaps the two unreleased recordings are the only downside to The Very Best of Lindisfarne, as they were obviously recorded at a later date than the rest of the material and lack the urgency and excitement of the meat of the collection. Regardless, The Very Best of Lindisfarne is a fantastic set for those curious about what the band was all about." (Gregory McIntosh)

Minus Story
Make The Dead Come
PS, US "Make the Dead Come" is a limited edition mini-album that MINUS STORY created as a creative outlet in the middle of making their upcoming full-length "My Ion Truss" (due out June 19, 2007). In between recording sessions for "My Ion Truss" with producer JOHN CONGLETON (THE POLYPHONIC SPREE, EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY) at Electrical Audio and Low Key, the band self-recorded "Make the Dead Come" on their 8-track in Kansas City. A thematic continuation and resolution of the death/ghost songs from their last two full-lengths "No Rest For Ghosts" and "The Captain Is Dead Let the Drum Corpse Dance, Make the Dead Come" is a darker and scarier journey with the group of Boonville, MS natives. On it, they rejoice in their trademark intuitive & distorted self-recorded style, which they've warmly named the Wall of Crap. This is their first recording with new band member Lucas Oswald, who contributes hammer dulcimer and background vocals.

Misraki, Paul
And God Created Woman
PS, ITALY "Although Brigitte Bardot was already famous in France, this is the movie that made Bardot an international star. She was the first foreign language star to gain such widespread popularity abroad and she opened the door for others to follow in her footsteps. Bardot was a bombshell in any language... and you certainly didn't need to read the subtitles to see that! The tag line to the movie was 'And God Created Woman... but the devil created Brigitte Bardot!' An erotic drama (the scene with Bardot dancing barefoot on a table is still hot enough to melt any acetate it's printed on) co-starring Jean-Louis Trintignant (who Bardot allegedly had an affair with) that tells the tale of 'life and love' on the Riviera. It made St. Tropez the popular resort for the rich and famous that it soon was to become. French director Roger Vadim (known for his affairs with beautiful women) was Brigitte's husband at the time and he wrote this film specifically for her, in hopes of adding more depth to Bardot's on-screen characters.." Adolfo goes to Brazil where he becomes a very successful actor; Vittorio remains in Italy and he also becomes a stage and movie star; and Luciano becomes a director, playwright, film critic, scholar and ardent Communist. Murder In The Cathedral
Afraid Of...
PS, GERMANY "Amazingly underrated French neo-psychedelic band. Arisen from the ashes of The Heretic Dreams, Murder in the Cathedral was founded in the beginning of the '90s by brothers Stephane (guitar, keyboards, vocals) and Pascal Moru (bass, keyboards) and drummer Gilles Lepron. Influenced by new groups like Plasticland, Prisoners, and in the tradition of 13th Floor Elevators, Chocolate Watchband or Plastic Cloud, the boys tried to create their own sound. Their first eponymous album (included as a bonus album on this CD), released in 1996, shows a mixture of guitar-oriented neo-psych in the vein of Plastic Cloud, Morgen and Grateful Dead. It consists of 8 titles, instrumental pieces alternating with vocal ones (sung in English). It was very positively received in the neo-psychedelic underground and the limited edition of 500 was sold out within a few months. 2nd album Afraid Of... saw the light of day in 1999. Now the music is much more structured and contains less jam-like passages. According to the reviewers, the crucial sound influences range from The Byrds to Bevis Frond, combining the San Francisco acid sound of the '60s with Oriental sounds. Again the album (limited edition of 500) was sold out within a few months. Although Long Hair is specialized in psychedelic/progressive music of the '60s and early '70s, we would like to present all lovers of psychedelic music this outstanding band."

Nascimbene, Mario
L'Eneide OST
PS, ITALY "Mario Nascimbene's music for the 1971 hit TV series of Virgil's immortal epic, the Aeneid, is not so much a comment on the scenic action, as a study of sounds and themes used to emphasize the psychological nature of the various characters. Amidst instrumental and vocal sounds (including the splendid voice of Olga Karlatos) an extremely new and intriguing concept in film music of the '60s/'70s is born. The viola of Dino Asciolla - warm and vibrating - manages to transport the listener into an ocean of sound of rare intensity. The splendid and sensible conducting skills of Maestro Carlo Savina add (especially in the five voice canon, a reinterpretation of antique and archaic melodies) a certain expressive luster that makes Mario Nascimbene's new sounds a confirmation of his great artistic genius." Necessary Intergalactic Cooperation
Nic
PS, UK Welcome to the wonderful electro-jazzy-funky-chunky magical world of Norway's Necessary Intergalactic Cooperation, or NIC for short [pronounced nick]. Based in Oslo, NIC is a fearless band of experienced sonic explorers bound together by a common thirst for musical challenge and diversity. This is a multi-faceted sound, without boundaries, that takes its influences from punk, jazz, reggae, soul, dub and electronica. A few years back, drummer Ted Parsons [Swans, Prong, Jesu, Killing Joke] spent some time hanging out in London with ex-PIL guitarist Keith Levene, jamming, chewing the fat, having a few beers and making plans to record together. Eventually, a few years later, Keith found himself in Oslo's Mok Studios alongside Ted and the rest of the NIC crew keyboard wizard Markus O Klyve, Texan guitarist and vocalist Chuck Frazier, bassist Matti Hansen, audio/dub scientist Fredrik (Kjeks) Kjelman, producer Scotty Hard and an elastic bag full of flexible ideas. This is the result, a ravishing album of laidback and funkadelic tunes. Vibrant, intensely textured guitars and keyboards layered over complex rolling rhythms sprinkled with some sweet soul vocals. And to cap it all they managed to recruit legendary Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær to contribute some beautifully haunting trumpet on track 4, Tume.

New Colony Six, The
Sides
PS, UK Often compared to Paul Revere & The Raiders (with whom they shared digs in LA), Chicago's New Colony Six burst onto the scene and into the charts with the garage-pop classic "I Confess" in early 1966. They followed this with a string of excellent Anglophile-influenced singles and scored further hits with "I Lie Awake", "Love You So Much" and "You're Gonna Be Mine", all released on their own tiny Sentar label. In 1967, their sound changed with the addition of Ronnie Rice and the band began licensing their singles out to Mercury Records. Pursuing a more harmonic pop style reminiscent of The Association or The Buckinghams they scored their biggest hits so far with "I Will Always Think About You" and the timeless "Things I'd Like To Say" in 1968. The four albums New Colony Six released between 1966 and 1969 are all excellent and feature a wide-ranging sweep through garage rock, harmony pop, light psychedelia and even jazz-influenced sounds. Sides, as the title suggest, collects various singles, alternate versions and unreleased tracks from across their entire career which have largely escaped reissues of their work so far.

Alison Statton
PS, US The title pays homage to the lovely young Welsh girl who fronted Young Marble Giants & Weekend. The songs pay
homage to failed relationships & the uncertainty of youth via a batch of intelligently informed compositions; one that should appease fans of Jens Lekman, Orange Juice & the early Belle & Sebastian records. Female vocals float through the back drops as trumpets & saxophones spurt lost Stax lines, a glockenspiel chimes, guitars feedback, drums flail & a young man sings sweetly about all the things young men should sing sweetly about. Alison Statton confirms Andrew Churchman's position as top-notch modern songwriter. Pawas
Never Met Them
PS, GERMANY "Pawas is now back with his very own three-track EP on the label of Koletzki & Meindl. All tracks were created in Pune in India, Pawas' hometown, and the EP is about three different characters: Alicia, Charlie and Edward. Each one of them has a certain distinctive vibe about them: 'Alicia' is deep and eloquent; 'Edward' is more hectic and restless while 'Charlie' seems the funky and witty sort. In terms of music, 'Edward' is carried on a powerful, deep synthie melody, a big breathing bass line and some great percussive clicks and clacks that turn into a slightly ravey minimal burner later on in the tune. Very hot! 'Charlie' is a little lighter and is pushed forward by a great funky melody that creates the perfect after hour moment. Imagine yourself on the beach when the sun is coming up. 'Alicia' on the A-side is a deeper, more housey affair and has a melodic, percussive and Detroity appeal. Pawas has managed to create a very fresh and unique signature sound and with releases on Squonk, Connaisseur and Flash Records, 2007 seems to be the year for him." ELECTRONIC

"Panikattack" (originally released on Plus 8 in 1996) gets a more radical overhaul with Guido Schneider excavating and enhancing the gritty funk of the original for some serious peak-time action. Prophet, Chuck
Hurting Business
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Singer/songwriter and cracking guitarist Chuck Prophet breaks the Americana mold on his fifth solo recording, and pops turntablism and noisy Tom Waits-style clanks into his formal songs as an experiment. It works: there's the bouncy Farfisa-toned title song, and "Lucky" is an absolute hit single right in the minimalist pocket with its guitar, drums, Hammond organ, and falsetto vocals (all certainly atypical on a Prophet-style production). "God's Arms" has a melodious Eastern hymn spin thanks to swirling Mellotron and mando guitar subbing for sitar. Though Homemade Blood was his high-water mark, new listeners may want to connect with this so-called departure before digging deeper into Prophet's wealthy storehouse of songcraft." (Denise Sullivan)

Sachiko
Kunado
PS, US "Japanese vocalist and instrumentalist Sachiko (Overhang Party, Vava Kitora, Kosokuya) looses a second, white-hot solo release. Her brilliant debut You Never Atone For on There/Musik Atlack rode gilded wings straight to the heart of the psych sun. The journey continues with Kunado. A tincture of Taj Mahal Travellers, wispy oscillations and lysergic vocals bathes the recording in delicate atmosphere as Sachiko's sonic attack leaves vicious and harrowing results. A listen not soon forgotten." ELECTRONIC

Schlarb, Chris
Twilight and Ghost Stories
PS, US A work of personal identity and deep catharsis, "Twilight & Ghost Stories" is a dense 40-minute modern composition featuring a disparate cross-section of musicians from the avant-garde, independent folk, jazz and electronic communities (including DIRTY PROJECTORS, SUFJAN STEVENS, WALTER KITINDU, CASTANETS, PARKER PAUL, BHOB RAINEY, and MICK ROSSI). A creative and accomplished jazz guitarist, CHRIS SCHLARB cut his teeth producing hip-hop tracks, teaching music workshops and co-founding the free music collective CREATE (!). Chris Schlarb is also one-half of I HEART LUNG, which Tiny Mix Tapes called "some of the most energetic free-jazz to spit out of America." Spanning all of these endeavors, "Twilight & Ghost Stories" finds Schlarb playing acoustic piano, organ, electric and acoustic guitar as well as tapes and percussion.

Simmons, Jeff
Naked Angels OST
PS, GERMANY Deluxe full color gatefold edition. "This is the first of two Straight label albums by Zappa's multi-talented 'sideman,' Jeff Simmons. In Seattle 1968 Herb Cohen and Frank Zappa were at the sound check for Jeff's band Easy Chair and were fascinated by Jeff's talent. He was soon signed to Straight records and later Jeff was in the Mothers of Invention at the time of 200 Motels. Both albums, Naked Angels and Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up were recorded in 1969. Reflecting strong fuzz guitar, heavy and psychedelicate surf-rock, Naked Angels, the original soundtrack for a Roger Corman cult biker movie, is a sequence of mostly instrumentals that combine the freedom of the late '60s mood and melody perfectly. This LP reissue comes with the original gatefold cover artwork by John Williams and includes the original French movie poster. This album is one of the coolest soundtracks made in the late '60s and was carefully remastered to sound today as fresh as it was 40 years ago."

Society of Rockets, The
Our Paths Related [LP vinyl & digital download ticket]
PS, US And away we go... Part 70s fuzz-soul, part bleary-eyed shoegaze, part California sunshine-pop, the Society of Rockets' experiment machine chugs on, devouring all parts and functions in its wake and spitting out an ever-widening array of dizzying psych-rock gems. The latest full-length release in a long line of left-turns and surprises, "Our Paths Related" is a cosmo-tour of potentialities, a series of violent hybrids and stylistic feints, rooted heavily in the often (and unjustly) ignored black rock wing of psychedelia: early Funkadelic, Muddy Waters' "Electric Mud", Chains and Black Exhaust. But this is just the framework, the launching pad - a jumping off point to which other systems and avenues can be joined and explored. The sonic experiments of the album play against each other, each element running headlong into the others... At this point in the band's career (both in its previous incarnation as the Shimmer Kids Underpop Association and on previous albums "Sunset Homes" and "Where the Grass Grows Black"), the 10-?member strong collective has rambled across a wide swathe of American musical territory, from quiet country-tinged balladry to ceiling-shattering garage rock, and, much like similarly restless heroes Neil Hagerty and Jason Pierce, the band continues to push the boundaries of their playing in an effort to find more room to grow. With its energetic wall of sound and kaleidoscopic backdrop of experimental films, combining equal parts distorted guitars, three-part harmonies, and Stax-Volt horns The SOR deliver the record-collector's version of a raucous Sunday church service. Hallelujah, and welcome to the congregation.

Protection Spells
PS, US A LIMITED NUMBER OF RECENTLY UNEARTHED COPIES OF THIS LONG-UNAVAILABLE, SOUGHT-AFTER RELEASE. "The Protection Spells" is a collection of songs recorded over a period of several SONGS: OHIA tours. Presented here are nine entirely improvised pieces. The approach to these songs involved no rehearsals, no second takes, no additions and no going back. What you have here are songs that just happened in real time. The many musicians on these recordings were friends, bandmates, and, at times, total strangers. I have long hoped to offer the listener a chance to have some of these great accidents on record. It is a direct look at my songwriting process, only a little more risky, and nobody has any idea what direction we are going until we all start working on it together. I think that the years of improvised music I played in the past helped to strengthen the risk-taking with these songs. Here the goal was to still have basic songs without falling into long freak-out noise experiments, saving that kind of exploration for live settings. You will notice the appearances and disappearances of ideas that could never be recreated, not that they are all brilliant, but they are certainly not forced. The seemingly arbitrary moments of strange repetition the lyrics, the clear lack of a preconceived system of established song parts, all are the marks of improvised songwriting. Since even the singing had no idea what the floorplan of the song was to be, there were some unanticipated troubles and some shy steps taken, but I have preserved these mappings of the dangerous musical byroads that Songs: Ohia has always depended on. I hope you enjoy this. -Jason Molina, July 10,2000

The Ghost
PS, US A LIMITED NUMBER OF RECENTLY UNEARTHED COPIES OF THIS LONG-UNAVAILABLE, SOUGHT-AFTER RELEASE. "The Ghost" is a dark affair. As a matter of content, its themes are bleak, on the verge of total blackness. Loneliness, alienation, desperation, and dark, anxious nights. As a matter of atmosphere, the album is even darker. Surface noise has never been so important to a record's mood and tone. Yes, it sounds like it was recorded on a highway, but this is a dark fucking highway at a lonely, desperate hour and the only set of keys you have are those to the car that won't take you any closer to home. It's dead and you're scared and totally alone. It's just such an occasion that JASON MOLINA sings and plays of in a roundabout way on "The Ghost". Recorded in one day direct to Jason's boom box with the tiny little microphone, this brand new batch of songs was written in a very short period in the early months of 1999. For Jason, fidelity was never an issue, in fact it was a tool. The boom box's inefficient battery-powered motor is just as integral to the recording as the vocal and guitar performance that occurred that February afternoon in Jason's room on his day off of work. This recording may be noisy but it is not a demo. It was originally made available in limited quantities-to be sold on the SONGS: OHIA tour of the East Coast with Drunk in the Spring of 1999 and the European tour in the early Summer 1999, however Secretly Canadian recently discovered enough parts of this release to resurrect it one more time.

The Art Of Letting Go
PS, GERMANY Kompakt's superheroes Michael Mayer and Superpitcher aka Supermayer get assigned to rescue their friend Ewan Pearson from the greedy Psychoprog's slippery tentacles. Tea Company, The
Come and Have Some Tea With The Tea Company
PS, GERMANY "From New York City, The Tea Company was one of the early birds from the U.S. psychedelic underground scene, with an LP on the market, originally released on Smash Records, in '68. This album stands for the evolution of the 45 rpm psych-garage bands to the upcoming LP-generation with extended improvisation parts. The music is inspired by The Beatles, using exactly the same equipment as them. The Tea Company played with lots of freaked out echo organ/guitar noises on a 12 string Rickenbacker and various stereo madness, reminding strongly of Syd Barrett's spirit but more driven by hard hittin' drums. The album is a mind-blowing, intense production (CD includes 4 bonus tracks by The Naturals). Remastered for this CD-release the sound is experimental, intense and fresh, the 8 page booklet contains a nice bio, photos and memorabilia. A must for those who wanna feed their minds with unusual early heavy psychedelic rock!"

Welsh Rare Beat 2
PS, UK "Gruff Rhys joins the Andy Votel, Dom Thomas and the Finders Keepers team once again to produce this, the second instalment in our critically-acclaimed and best-selling Welsh Rare Beat series. Derived from Dyfed bands with added friends from further a field in the Swansea valleys, Cardiff and Flint in the north, this is a wide and wonderful collection of bands - some were part of a political upheaval that empowered Welsh speakers to sing and express themselves in their mother tongue, part of a wider international youthquake, others were singing from the heart, paying the bills and just happened to live in Wales during this cultural crossroad. Here for your enjoyment are songs mostly about the sky, flying, seagulls, clouds and ghosts. But also songs that deal in political activism, The Mabinogi, or issues of Welsh identity. Girl group boy meets girl songs, parodies of boy meets girls songs, Welsh language covers of English and American hits of the day sung in a traditional Welsh style counteracted by traditional Welsh folk songs played in contemporary Anglo-American styles. The follow-up to the critically acclaimed Welsh Rare Beat compilation, this album features exclusive liner notes and track-by-track annotations from Gruff Rhys as well as a number of tracks previously unavailable on CD."
