AM Syndicate
Liberation
PS, US Sophomore effort from Austin TX based band. Formed in the Spring
2004 by Omar Chavez of RHYTHM OF BLACK LINES, AM Syndicate's sound
is a constantly evolving musical experiment - both catchy and challenging
- which is often described as a cross between the Arcade Fire and
the Animal Collective. "The mesmerizing lushness that has always
propelled AM Syndicate's music is pervasive and all-encompassing on
Liberation. (The album) is a musical force that deserves recognition."

sprawling through guitar riffs spanning deep electronic canyons overlooked
by a melancholic grey sky. A journey leading to discovery & a
final mutation. All players delicately playing off each other, creating
a mesmerizing work that sounds like nothing they have done before
yet still retaining the audio signatures they have become known for.

Apples In Stereo
Her Wallpaper Reverie [re-issue]
PS, US Re-issue. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "the band's most overtly psychedelic
record, it's also their most experimental, achieving a near-perfect
balance between candy-colored popcraft and musique concrète-influenced
interludes. In a sense, the disc is a response to the grand ambitions
of fellow Elephant 6-ers Olivia Tremor Control and their likeminded
Black Foliage album, but the Apples' integration of Beatlesque melodies
and experimental noises is much more seamless; not only are Her Wallpaper
Reverie's songs the best Robert Schneider's yet written, but they're
produced with a new richness of detail -- from the wonderfully Lennon-esque
"Strawberryfire" to the Kinks-ish "Ruby," the
music positively shimmers."

Fun Trick Noisemaker [re-issue]
PS, US Re-issue. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "One of the defining albums
of the mid-'90s indie scene, the Apples in Stereo's full-length debut
is one of those records that marks a sea change in musical attitudes,
akin to Mudhoney's "Touch Me I'm Sick" or Pavement's early
singles... The album that defines the post-grunge indie pop shift
from sullen negativity into a kind of cockeyed, giddy optimism, and
is also among the handful of albums that turned Brian Wilson, Arthur
Lee, and Burt Bacharach into cool names to drop at the record store...
Fun Trick Noisemaker is a minor masterpiece."Also available on

full-length album is a return to their early-'60s Beatlesque sound...
Robert Schneider's lyrics are more emotional and personal here than
on earlier releases, and the added intimacy, as well as the musical
layers, make The Discovery of a World Inside the Moone an intricate,
poignant lunar trip."

Aspen Woods
New World Disorder
PS, US Aspen Woods debut 70 minute 10 track debut LP will be released
on Razorblade records (home of Bristol shoegazers Secret Shine www.secretshine.co.uk
and liverpudlian acoustic artist Vincent Callan). Covering subjects
ranging from the ritual sacrifice of Princess Diana in 'Passing of
a Moon Goddess' to the unbreakable mother and son bond in 'The Witch's
Son', the woods have recorded as much of the album as possible live
using traditional recording techniques, to capture the guts and spirit
of their live shows much the same way as the bands influences would
have done so in the hazy 60s and 70s. Latchman Manghat (whose previous
works include the celebrated great lost HEADS psychedelic album and
Julian Cope favorite 'At last' that was 'er never... lost!) at Rolling
Rex Studios has engineered and expertly, painstakingly co-produced
the album with the band. For the Woods its as much about the journey
as well the destination, just like how you choose to live your life
- there are too many people prepared to step on too many people to
get to where they want - only to realize their not happy when they
get there. Getting where you want is nothing without putting in the
hard graft to feel the satisfaction. People want things to easy in
this day an age, without being prepared to work for it or care about
who they step on the way. US distribution has been secured with Tonevendor,
and the band are now seeking UK distribution aiming for a February
29th '08 release date and live dates to be announced throughout 2008
after the band return from the US. Homing their psychedelic crafts
on a fruitful Bristolian live scene. The band have played memorable
psychedelic hypnotic wig out sets at the legendary Espionage club
and the world famous Cube cinema (check the live footage over at www.aspenwoods.co.uk)
and have supported a wide variety of bands from Italian space rockers
UFO Mammut to Japan's instrumental wonders Mono. Marketing plans for
the album will be advertisements and media assault on the major alternative
music press UK and US.

Autechre
Quaristice
PS, UK New album of clicktronica from veteran ambienteers. ALL MUSIC
GUIDE: "at 73 minutes in length, most of the 20 tracks are more
like vignettes, yet the ideas arrive fully formed, never appearing
to be dashed off or loosely sketched. The variety of ideas is nearly
imposing, the best of which include the deadened chiming and clanging
of "Simmm," the stealth jitter of "Tankakern,"
the Drexciya-worthy pitch-black neo-electro of "Rale," and
the handful of stunning and duly swarthy ambient tracks -- especially
the closing 12 minutes shared by the chilling "Notwo" and
"Outh9x" tandem. A couple moments, unsurprisingly, border
on the inscrutable, with "Fol3" sounding like a collage
of car collisions and slammed doors smeared and backmasked for nearly
four minutes, and "bnc Cstl" more like a hyper-speed gag
of sound effects, its high hats and snares tucked deeply into the
mix. While it can take some time to get a handle on its generous stream
of components, Quaristice is far from just another Autechre album.
Not since LP5 has being impressed been so obviously secondary to enjoyment."

Basinski, William + Richard Chartier
Untitled 1-3
PS, US LINE is proud to release this new updated and remastered version
of William Basinski and Richard Chartier's universally acclaimed work
Untitled 1-2. Originally released in 2004 on the noted Japanese label
Spekk, the original edition of 1300 sold out within 2 months. This
new version Untitled 1-3 includes two new works 'Untitled 3' and 'Untitled
3 (reprise)' and has been remastered with care by Taylor Deupree.
"Untitled 1" contains Chartier elements from 1991-1992 and
Basinski elements from 2003 using the Voyetra 8. "Untitled 2"
contains Chartier elements from 2003 and Basinski tape loops from
1981 and 2001 using the Voyetra 8. "Untitled 3/3(reprise)"
contains Chartier elements from 1993 and the 2006 sound installation
Mixing Desk commissioned for the Bleeding Edge Festival at the Montalvo
Arts Center in Saratoga, California and Basinski elements from 1997
using the Voyetra 8. "Untitled 3" mixed by Basinski. "Untitled
3(reprise)" mixed by Chartier. "Richard and I became friends
after meeting at Tonic in NY when he and Taylor Deupree did a show
with Carsten Nicolai. He contacted me about a possible collaboration
and sent me a track which I thought was very rich and harmonically
similar to something I had recently been working on, a very swampy,
dark piece I was calling "The Garden of Brokenness" after
a very beautiful new installation by James Elaine. I popped it into
pro tools with my piece and something really special was happening,
so I spent a few weeks weeding my track, trying different things...eventually
I stripped it way down and we were both quite happy with the result.
Richard came up to NY and we fine tuned it a bit together and it was
done. Since the piece had changed quite a bit we decided not to use
that title for this piece. He then sent me another one and again,
it just worked with something else I had been working on...the second
track came together very quickly, and there you have it! I love Richard's
work...very elegant, like the man!" - William Basinski. Both
William Basinski and Richard Chartier have been digging through their
archival matter as of late. In fact, the majority of Basinski's recent
output is the result of his discoveries, including his profound Disintegration
Loops series. Chartier, meanwhile, based his recent production Archival1992
upon two older pieces evolved into a single-minded composition of
subtle disquiet. LIMITED EDITION: 1000

Bauhaus
Go Away White
PS, UK New album! 'Go Away White' is everything you would hope Bauhaus
would deliver as their final statement. Fronted by a cover photo of
Bethesda, the angel of the healing waters in New York's Central Park,
the music inside is pure cathartic renovation, a psychedelic glimpse
into an enchanted moment. Aided in part by guitarist Daniel Ash's
inspired use of Jimi Hendrix's own personal Vox wah wah pedal, gifted
to him by Peter Murphy at the start of the sessions, it is pop as
much as it is experimental. The 10 songs on 'Go Away White' channel
the kind of magic timelessness you could imagine on a mighty bill
with Joy Division, Bowie, Devo, the Creatures, Antony, My Bloody Valentine,
and Kraftwerk--with Oscar Wilde playing master of ceremonies. NME:

Beach House
Devotion
PS, US The familiar organs, slide guitars & reverb are intact
but they offer some new directions here. Having developed their craft
exponentially since last year's debut, their new record is a crisp
recording that showcases a set of fuller & richer songs, with
the band taking the pop duo format to the limit. ALL MUSIC GUIDE:
"With Devotion, Beach House prove once again that they're one
of the more strangely named bands around. Their music is so lonely,
so haunting, that the only beach house it evokes is a deserted one,
stranded on a winter night so desolate that summer isn't even a memory.
Then again, that atmosphere is precisely what made Beach House's self-titled
debut so striking, and Devotion is even more so, since Victoria Legrand
and Alex Scally bring more focus, depth, and warmth to their unmistakable
sound... Like Beach House, Devotion sounds like it was made for, and
possibly in, the dead of night. This time, though, Beach House's dark
moods have more shades, and even a little bit of light, making them
all the more compelling."

Beequeen
Sandancing
PS, US After the by now usual gap of some two years, Beequeen is ready
to present their latest album, further maturing their sound from 'The
Bodyshop' (also on Important Records). More song based, this album
features new vocals by Olga Wallis solely (with some backing by Freek
Kinkelaar). Well-rounded popsongs in some places, but Beequeen never
forgets to put in some strange element, without leaping in the dark
alley of pointless experiment. Orchestral in 'The Illogical Song',
collage like in 'The Edie Three Step' or a simple rhythm machine in
'The Honeythief'. Beequeen does all, and with great care and seemingly
ease. This album features also the help of Barry Gray, former (and
first) guitarist of The Legendary Pink Dots, and would not have been
the album that is without the invaluable production skills of Erik
Drost.

Bitcrush
Epilogue in Waves
PS, US '"Epilogue in Waves" is the third album from n5MD
main-man Mike Cadoo's ever evolving Bitcrush moniker. The album is
the soundtrack to a story which begins with a sense of hope, but whose
undercurrents pull you to the end you feared. Epilogue in Waves marks
the end of Cadoo's "wading in the ocean" thematic metaphor
for lost time that constituted the backbone of his previous album,
"In Distance." As his self-described "rock record,"
the album eschews some of Cadoo's previous electronic methodologies
for a more stripped-down songwriting style which utilizes only guitars,
basses and drums. This experiment in the basics has led to a sonically
rich release that still contains those warm musical crevices to find
solace in. Epilogue in Waves will please fans of previous works by
Bitcrush as well as neophytes to Cadoo's brand of emotional and sometimes
epic songwriting.

Boy Omega
Hope On The Horizon
PS, SPAIN On "Hope on the Horizon", Boy Omega (Swedish genius
Martin Henrik Gustafsson) follows up his critically acclaimed 2006-albums
"The Black Tango" and "The Grey Rainbow", with
yet another impressive collection of songs that showcase the growth
of his songwriting. As always when you hear a new Boy Omega-record,
there's something new going on. This time it's a lot less electronic
than before. This is something warm and analog, featuring big walls
of strings, horns, acoustic pianos etc. It sounds melancholic and
drenched with the bitter beauty of life. Besides from recording "Hope...",
releasing two albums, a tour-cd (feat. 15 rare tracks and covers),
two singles, the split CD "If we were oceans" and appearing
on the Magnetic Fields tribute CD "Our love is meaningless",
Boy Omega also managed to play more than 60 shows in 2006. Germany,
Austria, The Netherlands and the UK were frequently visited. In the
summer they played the Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg, The End of
the road festival in the UK along with artists such as Ryan Adams,
Ed Harcourt and Badly Drawn Boy. They also did shows together with
Isobel Campbell, Akron/Family, The Hidden Cameras and Jason Collett.

Bryars, Gavin
Hommages
PS, UK Remastered. Originally released in November 1981 on Les Disques
du Crepuscule, Hommages was recorded in Leicester in February 1981
and produced by noted Belgian new music composer Wim Mertens. The
album was conceived as a series of diverse homage's to other composers,
which include Bill Evans (My First Homage), Ferruccio Busoni and Gustav
Holst (The English Mail-Coach and The Vespertine Park) and Percy Grainger
(Hi-Tremolo). Featured musicians included Andrew Bilham, Ronald Reah,
Andrew Renshaw, Nigel Shipway, Dave Smith, John White and Marie Wilson,
as well as Gavin Bryars himself on piano and vibraphone. The album
is the only one that documents the important period between Bryars'
early experimental music and later works from Medea onwards, as well
as his enthusiasm for small composer/performer ensembles. The new
63 minute digital remaster of Hommages now includes two bonus tracks
composed and recorded by Bryars during the same period: Danse Dieppoise,
and the lengthy piano piece Out of Zaleski's Gazebo. The booklet features
extensive notes by Gavin Bryars on the origin and performance of all
six pieces, and preserves the original album cover artwork by Marc

Cash, Brent
How Will I Know If I'm Awake (ON SALE)
PS, GERMANY The Marina label presents the debut release from Athens,
GA-based Brent Cash. Sounding like a lost sunshine pop classic from
the '60s, How Will I Know If I'm Awake is overflowing with hook-laden
choruses, multi-layered vocal harmonies and lush, sophisticated arrangements.
It's the sound of endless summers and good vibrations. From the start,
multi-instrumentalist Cash decided to record his songs like "they
did it back then," hiring the best musicians in town and assembling
a mini-orchestra featuring strings, brass and even a harp. The results
are simply stunning. From the opening chords of "Everything That's
Grey," we enter melody wonderland, a place where major 7 chords
rule and beautiful vocal harmonies dazzle your mind. "Digging
The Fault Line" is full of Byrds guitar jangle, sounding like
the perfect soundtrack to cruise into golden California sunsets (with
a great Wes Montgomery-like guitar solo along the way). "Only
Time" explodes with 100 % fat-free youthful euphoria -- Roger
Nichols meets The 5th Dimension. While deeply rooted in '60s songwriting
-- influenced by Bacharach, Wilson, McCartney, and yes, The Monkees
-- Cash certainly has his own unique signature style. Just listen
to "And Had We Ever?" and "I Think I'm Falling In Love"
-- with its complex, enchanting textures, ignoring conventional song
structures. "Love Is Burning Down Tonight" -- a striking
duet between Brent and Amanda Kapousouz -- is a special highlight
of the album, while "Good Morning Sunshine" could be the
theme song to the best TV series in the world -- the harpsichord-driven
piece is chock-full of amazing twists and turns of melodic beauty.
"This Sea, These Waves" moves us into bossa nova territory
-- starting off in a classic Getz/Gilberto mould, the song soon morphs
into heavenly orchestrated Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 elegance.
"More Than Everything," clocking in at over six minutes,
ends this beautiful song circle with a great final statement about
overcoming heartbreak, delivered with the sincerity of a Carpenters
record. Music made the way it was meant to be heard.

Club 8
Strangely Beautiful + 5
PS, SWEDEN Reissue. Labrador is proud to present the fourth of four
CD album re-issues by one of Sweden's most influential indie pop bands.
Club 8s fifth album "Strangely beautiful" is released with
original artwork and nothing less than five (5) bonus tracks. "Strangely
beautiful" was the last of three albums in Club 8's productive
peak between 2001 and 2003. Within a time frame of less than two years
the band managed to release three full-length albums and two Eps without
ever losing on quality. Quite the opposite, "Strangely beautiful"
was by many considered their best album to date. "Strangely Beautiful
is Club 8's best and most varied record to date...on this album, the
band's trademark blend of soft indie pop guitars, perky dance beats,
melancholy synthesizers, and sweet and innocent vocals remains intact,
but Johan Angergard, the chief architect of Club 8's sound, seems
to have spent some effort trying to expand their sound a little. The
work pays off handsomely and the album sounds full of life and energy."
ALL MUSIC Their previous album "Spring came, rain fell"
had been a very diverse history ranging from electronica and dub to
acoustic pop. Therefor it came natural for Club 8 to move in the opposite
direction on their next album and make a more homogeneous album. "Strangely
beautiful" mostly revolved around guitar based and melancholic
pop music. But there was, as always, tracks that stood out as completely
different from the rest. And in typical Club 8 manner this track,
"Saturday night engine", was chosen to be the single. This
noisy and Northern Soul-inspired track was a clear forerunner to The
Legends "Up against the Legends". But that's another story.

The Friend I Once Had + 6
PS, SWEDEN Reissue. With a glittery mix of jangly guitars, bossa nova
and sophisticated, melancholic pop melodies, "The Friend I Once
Had" was a big step forwards for Club 8. Their debut album "Nouvelle"
may be regarded, as a twee pop classic by some but the band would
happily rather bury most the songs under a rock. This is the album
they wish was their debut. "All bubble-pop, break beats, and
xylophones, Friend I Once Had was a step forward from the fey gestures
Club 8 had once been known for." ALL MUSIC GUIDE "...showcases
lusher, bouncier songs suitable for both easy listening and sophisticated
grooving .... music that you will immediately cherish..." CMJ
"It is absolutely essential to own at least one Lp by this group.
I'd probably suggest this one as the place to start, but you really
can't go wrong." 10 + INDIESPINZONE "The friend I once had"
was not only a first step towards the band's characteristically elegant,
yet melancholic, "Club 8 - sound"; it was a step towards
a much bigger (and possibly wider) audience. The album gained critical
success and reached thousands of new listeners in the US, Europe and
Japan and they even had a minor hit with the single "Missing
you". Ironically, this is the only song from the album parts
of the band can no longer stand. "The Friend I Once Had"
celebrates 10 years and remains a minor Swedish pop classic. A must
have for just about anyone genuinely interested in quality POP.

Club 8
Spring Came, Rain Fell + 5
PS, SWEDEN Reissue. Labrador is proud to announce the third of four
CD album re-issues by Sweden's kings & queens of happysad indie
pop. Club 8s third album "Spring came, rain fell" is released
with original artwork and five (5) bonus tracks. "Spring came,
rain fell" was the start of a whole new era for Club 8. They
had just bought their own recording equipment and started the now
famous Summersound Studio together with fellow band Acid House Kings
and from this a whole new level of creativity emerged. You can tell
Club 8 enjoyed their newly found freedom with a studio of thier own.
"Spring came, rain fell" is sparkling of experimental lust.
Without ever losing their touch for seductive pop melodies Club 8
here produces songs and sounds ranging from dub and electronica to
smokey trip hop and folky and acoustic pop. They did everything just
because they could do it and because they loved doing. "Club
8 use the studio to bring the best out in every song ... shafts of
melodica shine a light through Komstedt's dewy fatalism. It may be
bleak, but you can't stop returning." - MOJO "As summer
slips away, wallow in some Scandinavian sadness with this Swedish
duo's wonderfully soothing (UK) début." - TIME OUT (London)

Club 8 + 2
PS, SWEDEN Reissue. Labrador is proud to present the second of four
CD album re-issues by Sweden's melancholic pop heroes. Club 8s self-titled
third is released with original artwork and two (2) bonus tracks.
It took three years from the previous album "The friend I once
had" to the release of "Club 8" and listening to the
albums after one and another it's obvious how much they'd changed
in absence. This album definitely moved the band in a new direction.
And you can tell directly from the first song on "Club 8".
"Love in december" is breathtaking, soulful pop imbued by
dark Scandinavian winter atmosphere and bittersweet melancholy. "If
a lover's arms were as soft and sultry as the music on Club 8, returning
to them again and again would pose little conflict, and the same goes
for slipping into Club 8." ROLLING STONE

Coltrane, John
Turning Point
PS, UK Over the all too brief 40 years of his life, John Coltrane
had a profound and far-reaching effect on the world of jazz and beyond.
Yet acclaimed as he already was after spells as a sideman with giants
such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk, it was only
in 1957 that his musical vision began to truly find focus. The "spiritual
awakening" of which he spoke prompted him to make wholesale changes
in his lifestyle. Out, went the bad habits that had made many fears
for his life, to be replaced by an all-consuming quest to make music
that transcended national and cultural boundaries, bringing both player
and listener to a state of connectedness with God. This edition illustrates
that landmark year with selections from four important sessions; collaborations
and first dates as leader with Tadd Dameron, Kenny Burrell, Tommy
Flanagan and Red Garland. The listener will find abundant evidence
of one of jazz's undisputed greats demonstrating total mastery of
the music that succored him through his early years - blues, swing,
bebop - and already beginning to hunger for fresh challenges. Coltrane's
eclectic attitudes, encouraged by his friendship with Ravi Shankar,
would soon inspire The Byrds ('Eight Miles High'), Jimi Hendrix, The
Grateful Dead, The Doors, Tom Verlaine, The Stooges. Mating Call /

Corsano, Chris
The Young Cricketer
PS, US "The Young Cricketer" is CHRIS CORSANO'S debut of
Frankenstein/gamelan skin detail. It's a monster and a babe all wrapped
under the guise of "The Solo Drum Album". Corsano's flea-market
kit of cast-iron pot lids, super-bouncy-balls on sticks, butter knives,
and even a sax mouthpiece jammed-in-a-hose conjures a part rhythmic
maelstrom, like a Milford Graves drip painting, and the sweet metallic
ice drones of Tony Conrad and Keiji Haino rubbing sticks together
until end days. Globally known for a dozen scorched/power jazz sessions
with sax blower Paul Flaherty and a cadre of collaborators and groups
(Jandek, Bjork, Jim O'Rourke, Dream/Aktion Unit, Vampire Belt, Michael
Flower, Dredd Foole, etc.), Corsano's drumming has leapt from post-hardcore
explorations into outrageous, primeval and outright futuristic depth
during his past 10 years of recorded documentation. This LP is a field
recording of wire, skin, metal and soul -- not tunes for yr neighbor's
bongo party. Originally issued on Corsano's own Hot Cars Warp label
as a CDR, this LP IS REMASTERED AND ISSUED IN A 600 EDITION.

Crabapples
Crabapples For Change
PS, US Inspired equally by '78-'79 punk (Buzzcocks, Swell Maps) and
'80s and '90s pop (This Poison!, Television Personalities, Boyracer),
The Crabapples were a tough little Bay Area four-piece that exploded
briefly on the scene a few years back. Loud but melodic, their specialty
was short, catchy tunes played with sloppy abandon. Live shows clocked
in at around 15 minutes and this 4-song EP is an ideal keepsake of
The Crabapples effervescent charms. From the mod-ish pogo of "Quality
(Not Quantity)" to the angular "The Earnest Young Man Song"
to the full-on near-hardcore of "Crabapples For Change"
this great EP rushes along in a breathless blur, fuelled by lager,
explosive tunes and a love of great pop. The band included members
of The Frenchmen and Black Tambourine, and this single is sure to
please all fans of scrappy punk-ish pop. All copies pressed on colored
vinyl in a hand-stamped sleeve.

Dot Tape Dot
Tomavistas: (Selected Rarities 2002-2007)
PS, US Daniel Romero is a multi-faceted musician based in Asturias,
north of Spain. In a very short time he has molded a very personal
discourse based on constructing low-budget electronic pop with lo-fi,
toy instruments, combined with stunning homemade visuals. "Tomavistas"
is something like an old video camera - literally taking in and recording
the landscapes of contemplative, visual sound. It is a collection
of Daniel Romero's rarities and personal favorites recorded as dot
tape dot, spanning the years 2002 - 2007. "Tomavistas" is
born of love of the domestic flavor of the "underground"
and the pleasure derived spending time making music for this scene.
Considering the difficulty for listeners to find these tracks, it
became time to compile them along with other, little known pieces
and clears out space for a new personal stockpile to be built. These
12 tracks are taken from limited edition compilations, vinyl only
releases and "unofficial" albums, from labels in France,
Germany, Spain, Japan, Mexico, UK and Canada. This collection is intended
to serve as a retrospective for fans, highlighting different musical

Dreamers, The

PS, SWEDEN The Dreamers are an Anglo/Swedish duo featuring Sarah Nyberg
Pergament (Action Biker) and Kevin Wright (Always and Mr. Wright,
on él, Le Grand Magistery and Siesta). After meeting at a Swedish
music festival in 2004, the pair began making music together via London,
Stockholm and Helsinki, and fusing jazz pop, bossanova, and soundtrack
music. With "Day for Night" the Dreamers have made--to paraphrase
Michel Legrand on Tom Jobim- the sad music that makes the world a
better place. Influences: Stan Tracey, Caetano Veloso, Colleen, Francoise
Hardy, Kryzystof Komeda, Matching Mole, Anna Karina, Bill Evans, Monica

Snafu
PS, UK East of Eden's second album, "Snafu" was originally

dominated the music, leading eventually to Arbus playing the infamous

PS, US END.USER is one of the cornerstones of the modern eclectic
electronic music. Support from BBC Radio's Mary Anne Hobbs and a list
of DJs too long to fit on a one sheet, from many different genres,
and releases across many platforms have built him into a juggernaut.
A usually prolific artist, having recorded for Hymen, Ad Noiseam,
Sublight, Cargo, and many others, he took 2007 off, working on something
very special - his debut album on Ohm Resistance. Having relocated
to San Francisco, a new lease on his creative power is demonstrated
adroitly over the entire album. Album: left shows the most range of
END.USER's album making career. Intensely personal, intensely musical,
and just plain INTENSE at points, the album showcases a spectacular
array of skills across the board. From radio play material ("black
light") with Aussie vocalist Sol Thomas, to collaborations with
and remixes by influential electronic acts SCORN and COUNTERSTRIKE,
to absolutely stunning, no boundaries drum n bass, the album is diverse
and full of powerful compositions. Compelling from start to finish,

English, Lawrence/Ai Yamamoto
Plateau
PS, US Over the past three years Ai Yamamoto and Lawrence English
have been exploring the ideas and linkages between field recordings,
texture and minimal electronics. Occasionally crossing paths around
Australia and sharing the odd live performance together, the duo realized
they shared a strong interest in the character of sound and the creation
of sonic works that carry a strong sense of suggested narrative and
memory (both invented and real). On Plateau, they create evocative
and generously textured passages of sound that mask gentle field recordings
collected across the globe including Yamamoto's home prefecture of
Nara, Japan where English also spent time. Considered In worldwide
as the "Bible" of modern, cutting edge and new music and
in publication now for over 20 years is the U.K. monthly magazine,
The Wire, here is what they had to say upon review of "Plateau"
in the February 2006 edition: A man of many collaborations, Lawrence
English joins fellow Australian sound artist Ai Yamamoto for Plateau,
a somber album of impressionist fragments connected more by mood and
ambience than by movement and composition. As in his previous work
with Tujiko Noriko DJ Olive and Philip Samartzis, English applies
a considerable amount of DSP-distilled polish to the ensuing sounds,
whether they are textured field recordings, rasping tam-tams or post-Eno
dronescapes. Considering that Plateau jumps from tonefloat shimmer
to wintry Durutti Column guitar flourishes to a music box palindrome
and back to a bout of ominous minimalism, English's production serves
to encase the entire album with a consistent aura. Plateau's numerous
stylistic transitions and melodic interludes never veer far from a
compelling if fragile melancholy.

Erik M
Steme
PS, AUSTRALIA Between his reputation as swift shifting improviser,
concrete composer and turntable deconstructionist, Marseilles based
artist ERIKM has earned himself an enviable position in the European
music community. With Stéme, his most ambitious and fully realised
compositional work to date, he devolves and recontextualises the boundaries
between sound source and sound media. In essence, Stème originates
from a selection of ten one minute long sound pieces burned on a CD
that was deliberately damaged. These media (music on modified media
or field recording) formed the basis of multiple improvised session
including multiple stages of construction and destruction of these
acoustic matters using my different electronic real time live music
systems (3k-pad8system & MD or CD-dj and electronics). The resulting
sounds are truly distinctive - filigree like sonic details are brought
into sharp focus, tuning the ears with their paced spatial movements.
Occasional grabs of the source sound material appear and are erased
equally as quickly. A genuinely powerful statement of compositional
intent. ERIKM has instinctively followed a relatively unusual, even
risky, career path. Stemming from his interest in visual arts and
his first musical experience as a rock guitarist, he has for some
years now become steadily more and more renowned for his virtuoso
turn tabling and his use of electronic instruments and tools in an
integrated scenic set-up eRikm has followed up musical collaborations
with Voice Crack, Christian Marclay, Luc Ferrari, among others. He
is certainly one of the better-equipped artists of the new generation
to actually demonstrate a relationship between rock music (in its
widest sense) and contemporary music ; hiding behind neither cultural
camouflage nor an easy pandering to his audience.

Fairport Convention
Liege & Lief (Deluxe Edition, 2PC, Remastered)
PS, US In the decades since its original release, more than one writer
has declared Fairport Convention's Liege & Lief the definitive
British folk-rock album, a distinction it holds at least in part because
it grants equal importance to all three parts of that formula. While
Fairport had begun dipping their toes into British traditional folk
with their stellar version of "A Sailor's Life" on Unhalfbricking,
Liege & Lief found them diving headfirst into the possibilities
of England's musical past, with Ashley Hutchings digging through the
archives at the Cecil Sharp House in search of musical treasure and
the musicians (in particular vocalist Sandy Denny) eagerly embracing
the dark mysteries of this music. (Only two of the album's eight songs
were group originals, though "Crazy Man Michael" and "Come
All Ye" hardly stand out from their antique counterparts.) Liege
& Lief was also recorded after a tour bus crash claimed the lives
of original Fairport drummer Martin Lamble and Richard Thompson's
girlfriend; as the members of the group worked to shake off the tragedy
(and break in new drummer Dave Mattacks and full-time fiddler Dave
Swarbrick), they became a stronger and more adventurous unit, less
interested in the neo-Jefferson Airplane direction of their earlier
work and firmly committed to fusing time-worn folk with electric instruments
while honoring both. And while Liege & Lief was the most purely
folk-oriented Fairport Convention album to date, it also rocked hard
in a thoroughly original and uncompromising way; the "Lark in
the Morning" medley swings unrelentingly, the group's crashing
dynamics wring every last ounce of drama from "Tam Lin"
and "Matty Groves," and Thompson and Swarbrick's soloing
is dazzling throughout. Liege & Lief introduced a large new audience
to the beauty of British folk, but Fairport Convention's interpretations
spoke of the present as much as the past, and the result was timeless
music in the best sense of the term. In 2007, about a year after Liege
& Lief finally earned a gold disc in the U.K., Island Records
released a two-disc "Deluxe Edition" of the album. Disc
one features the original album remastered by Denis Blackham, and
while it doesn't sound strikingly superior to the 2002 expanded CD
version, the audio is certainly improved over the 1993 CD (and the
original vinyl LP). Disc two features ten bonus tracks: two Liege
& Lief outtakes that surfaced on the 2002 reissue, "Sir Patrick
Spens" and "Quiet Joys of Brotherhood," lead off the
disc, while another take of "Quiet Joys of Brotherhood"
also makes the cut. Most of the rest of the disc consists of BBC recordings
of Fairport live in the studio in 1969, along with a fine cover of
"The Ballad of Easy Rider" and a jokey medley of "The
Lady Is a Tramp" and "Fly Me to the Moon." Ultimately,
the added material on the bonus disc doesn't seem to add as much to
the package as the presence of "Sir Patrick Spens" and "Quiet
Joys of Brotherhood" enhanced the 2002 edition, but the original
album genuinely plays better in its original eight-song sequence,
and this deluxe version does boast a beautifully designed package.
Fairport fanatics will want to pick this up for the rare BBC material,
but the less obsessed will do just fine to hold on their copies of
the 2002 issue. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide

Fine Arts Showcase, The
Sings Rough Bunnies
PS, SWEDEN Third album from Gustaf Kjellvander's Fine Arts Showcase,
and the follow-up to his 110% brilliant. The short version: TFAS covers
11 song by Swedish cult-twee-punk-lofi duo The Rough Bunnies. The
bonus, on top of it all, twist to the album is that it is mastered
by the legendary Mr Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub!
The long version: This is an album of many
stories. Gustaf Kjellvander and his friends in The Fine Arts Showcase
have made a covers album, entirely based on songs from the Swedish,
rather unknown, jangly, lo-fi band Rough Bunnies. Why is that? Let's
make Gustaf himself explain: "I was first introduced to Anna
Vermina and her cousin Frida, the founding members of Rough Bunnies
and Inside Riot, through mutual friends. Frida gave me a CD-R just
days before they were about to move to Berlin. About six months later
I was looking for someone to rent my spare room. I bumped into Frida
by chance, who told me she had moved back from Berlin to Malmö
and needed a place to stay - so she moved in. I was already smitten
by Inside Riot at this time, and when Frida played me the songs they
had recorded in Berlin, along with the Rough Bunnies record C-sides,
it blew me away. I played it to everyone who came over to my house.
They became an obsession that carries on to this day. I knew I wanted
the Fine Arts Showcase to cover their songs. The problem was that
with a catalogue of songs as amazing as theirs it was hard to pick
just one, so I came up with the idea that we should do an entire record
instead (in the Merle Haggard sings Jimmy Rodgers tradition). And
here it is: a musical love letter to two of my favorite songwriters,
a celebration of the pop geniuses of the Vermina family. Rough Bunnies
(and their twin group Inside Riot) have inspired me more than any
other band this side of the millennium and this record is my way of
thanking them. Rough Bunnies Saved My Life" -Gustaf Kjellvander
WIRELESS BOLLINGER REVIEW: "But the hook
that makes this album fun isn't just the fact that most of the tales
told in each song are full of girly sweetness. Rather it's the Fine
Arts Showcase sound itself - and in particular, Kjellvander's sensationally
produced voice, mixing with the aforementioned feminie splendour of
Rough Bunnies' original words, that make it work so well. Instead
of coming across as simply a cute, slightly cheeky female pop record,
what we've got here is an album by a man who's lovingly singing through
diary entries, discovering her fascinations, disappointments, sexuality,
crushes - the works. This grown male's perspective on adolescent female
territory delivers a fresh-sounding positive romanticism to Sings
Rough Bunnies; and it's bloody infectious."

Fireflies
Goodnight Stars, Goodnight Moon
PS, SWEDEN Fireflies is Lisle Mitnik. He grew up in the tundras of
New England playing classical piano and one day he moved to California
to go to school and decided to start writing songs. He bought a porta-studio
and started recording, combining his love for lo-fi indie recordings
of the 1980s and 90s with his unrefined knowledge of classical arrangement.
He try to craft each song into a tiny snow-globe-sized universe you

Sun Giant
PS, US Seattle's Fleet Foxes make such complex, harmonic, 70s inspired
folk-rock, it's hard to believe that the band's principle songwriter,
Robin Pecknold, is only 21 years old. There's a moment on David Crosby's
"Laughing" where Cros, Joni, and the whole gang hit a harmony
that might be the most gorgeous moment in the history of recorded
music. The Fleet Foxes know that moment and they go for it. This EP
is a precursor to the band's debut, "Ragged Wood", out in
June.

PS, US Rather than sticking with the bedroom orchestra arrangements
of their debut, Snaggle and Buck (Oedipus), with Trumpet they opt
for a more traditional band arrangement. They round their song out

Saturnalia
PS, US The first album from the collaboration forged in late 2003
by Mark Lanegan and fellow maverick singer-songwriter Greg Dulli.
"Saturnalia" finds the Dulli nicknamed "Satanic Everly
Brothers" going even deeper into the shadows than ever before.
It proves rootsy but baroque, handmade yet modernist, teeming with
siren melodies that don't resolve. The cumulative effect proves internal
yet epic: the netherworld symphonics of Mogwai, Sigur Ros, and Bohren
und der Club of Gore are touchstones, alongside the sprawling emotions
of Pink Floyd, the melodically catchy paranoia of the Beach Boys,
the primal confessionals of John Lennon. Still, what Dulli and Lanegan
achieve ultimately feels like the determinedly individual product
of two auteurs coming together.

Happy Matt
PS, US Ripping a page from the Meaty Beaty Big And Bouncy songbook,
The How might not be The Who but you'd be forgiven for getting them
mixed up. The mod-rocking brainchild of Matt (Henry's Dress, The Coachwhips,
Sic Alps) and Stewart (Boyracer, 555 Records), The How pays cheeky
tribute to the Spirit of '66: slashing guitars, pop-art graphics,
sharp threads and even sharper tunes. Upbeat A-side "Happy Matt"
will have you frugging in no time, throwing more shapes on the dancefloor
than the Ace Face himself. On the flip, "I Was A Boy" Matt
sings oh-so-sweetly while Stew pummels his drum kit into submission;
midway through the song bursts into a complete feedback frenzy, going
all red with purple flashes. Two ace tunes to end your summer, all
wrapped up in colored vinyl and a hand-screened transparent sleeve.

Landes, Dawn
Fireproof
PS, UK ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Landes' second album shows that while
she's been characterized as a folk artist, it might be more appropriate
to say she has her own quietly varied spin on a number of styles,
using her talents as a studio engineer to create something that has
a tense, moody feeling that wouldn't surprise listeners of performers
ranging from Suzanne Vega to Alison Krauss (or, for that matter, producers
like Jon Brion and T Bone Burnett). Backed by a variety of able performers,
most notably Ray Rizzo on "drums, vocals, chaos," Landes
plays everything from guitars to Optigans to bells as well as sings,
but what's interesting is how relatively uncluttered Fireproof sounds
-- there's always a sense of space that the music fills but doesn't
dominate, matched by the gentle swath of echo she adds to her voice)."

Lodger, The
Grown-Ups
PS, US The Lodger was born in Ben Siddall's Leeds bedsit flat in 2004.
Encouraged by local label Dance To The Radio, Ben recruited friends
for bass and drum duties, tuned-up with live shows around town and
debuted in early 2005 with a track on a Dance To The Radio compilation.
The band quickly followed-up with their excellent debut single "Many
Thanks For Your Honest Opinion," the "Watching" 7"
on Double Dragon, and track for the hotly-tipped Wrath label's split
7" series. 2006 was when the band got their act together-- a
permanent line-up of Ben, Joe and Katie was established and the band
went out on the road in the UK with kindred Yorkshire spirits The
Research in February. London indie label Angular Records released
the band's ace third single "Let Her Go" shortly afterwards.
This single won the BBC 6music's Rebel Playlist and started to pick
up airplay worldwide. In the summer the band decamped to Alan Smyth's
tiny little Sheffield recording studio to record songs for their debut
album. Thirteen tracks were recorded in a week in September and the
result is "Grown-Ups." On the heels of the successes of
bands like The Kaiser Chiefs and The Arctic Monkeys, the north of
England is fairly bursting with exciting guitar pop bands, and The
Lodger are amongst the brightest hopes. Taking their cues from fellow
northerners The Smiths and The Wedding Present, The Lodger's music
is classic melodic pop, fueled by sparkling hooks and plangent lyrics.
The tunes are sharp and timeless, a thoroughly modern distillation
of great Britpop from the 60s right up to today. Grown-Ups is a perfect
introduction to the thrilling pop charms of The Lodger.

PS, AUSTRALIA Lullatone are back with their latest Conceptual pop
masterpiece, Lullatone presents the bedtime beat This new 10 song

beat", which features a drum solo of tapping water in a bathtub!
Other interesting sounds to be found on the record include a bed tapped
to sound like a bass drum, snores cut up into hypnotic, breathy drum
beats, Yoshimi's human beatbox, marching in slippers, and a full cast
of toy instruments and soft sine tones intricately arranged into tiny
little dazzling melodies recorded half at home and half in a music
room at a Japanese elementary school. This is both Lullatone's strangest
and most pop album yet, and a future classic for sure. So, come on

PS, US His first record in three years. Malkmus' genius is that he
knows exactly when to fetter. These songs may sprawl like the Central

a glistening sound world that finely textured with the most delicate
of raw organic sound and chaotic electronic noise. Not at all extreme
as with Menches previous work but rather a more subtle presence can
be heard here on Glass Forest. Subsonic bass drums crawling underneath
a massive sheets of glass-like sound layering infinitely into a thick
