Bacon & Egg
Are Fanduvo
PS, US A hip hop metal journey through the wastelands of New Jersey's & Washington's stripmall towns, BMX paths & video game parlours. It's a lifestyle record, if you will, plum full of self-references, rhymin', stealin', & tight lead work. It's the guys from VOLUMEN, but this is very much a living, breathing, rocking band with it's own life.
WantageUSA-001

DC Snipers
Missle Sunset
PS, US They bring something different to the table with each of the 11 tracks on this album; & its hard to do that & actually end up with a record thats good! They prove its not impossible. Taking cues from other musical pioneers like the Screamers, Gang of Four, Urinals & the Electric Eels; they forge into their own fragmented, audience-less sector & begin to build a following based on songs that are undeniably catchy without sticking to a musical script.
DeadBeat-62
CD
$13.00

Dntel
Jukeboxseries 100-10
PS, US First output since 2001. Dntel shares some of his most beautiful sounds ever. He dives further into electronic tones to tug heartstrings and make sad boomboxes bling. Jimmy is joined by the magic voice of MIA DOI TODD and the glowing guitar art of PAUL LARSON. These frequently collaborators combine talents to perfectly conjure the melancholy wonder of Dntels world.

El Pero DEl Mar
Lookl! It's El Perro Del Mar!
PS, SWEDEN El Perro del Mar was founded in December 2003 in Gothenburg by the sole member of El Perro Del Mar, Sarah. In November 2004 El Perro Del Mar released the three-track ep "What's New? El perro del mar" which included the songs 'This Loneliness, 'It's all good' and 'I can't talk about it'. She also worked together with Swedish Jens Lekman and together they released a split vinyl single on which Sarah contributed the song 'Shake it off'. The single was available in Sweden and in the U.S via Jens' label Secretly Canadian - but it was quickly sold out. El Perro Del Mar also went on a short tour in Sweden accompanying Jens around this time. In Spring 2005 a compilation of all the earlier released tracks, 'Look it's El Perro Del Mar', was released, once again for Hybris. Sounds like The Concretes in bedroom-recording mode, Jens Lekman's lofi orchestrations, Phil Spector girlgroup wall-of-sound 60s pop...

Hi Soft
Amateur
PS, US Great Philly band w/ former members of the LILYS. Fits in great w/ the current crop of somewhat retro guitar based indie rock that is the rage these days, but w/ a unique style that will appeal to real music geeks as well as hipsters. RIYL: XTC, MBV, 60s psych, Echo & the Bunnymen.

Laakso
My Gods
PS, US New full-length album from Swedish/Finnish folk-rock elementalists. Not quite as elemental or viscerally folky as their acclaimed releases for Adrian Records (also available), but the band's popsense is certainly thriving. Still in league with longtime producer Jari Haapalainen (Bear Quartet, Concretes, many more) for their V2 EP debut Laakso explore some glossier higher-fi-er textures while still whipping up a a truly cathartic frenzy.

PS, BELGIUM New repress of this mid-90s release.
SUBROSA-057
CD
$14.00

Mardie, Montt
Drama
PS, SWEDEN Montt Mardié is the brilliant voice of David Pagmar from Stockholm, Sweden. "Drama" is a breathtaking collection of extremely soulful pop. Fans of Acid House Kings' latest will find much to love here, but really Montt's quite a bit sexier, like fellow Swedish act Moneybrother. Excellent music blog Swedesplease said "equal parts Duran Duran and Motown soul" but we're leaning more towards the classic sounds of Style Council and The Colourfield, and even, occasionally, some of George Michael's biggest hits. Yes, even Wham! at times. With a hint a camp Montt Mardie is one of Sweden's brightest new pop hopes.
Hybris-022

Expedition To The Hairier Peaks
PS, US 4th full length from these fort thunder founding fathers. Brian Chipendale (Lightning Bolt) & Mat Brinkman (Forcefield) team up & destroy time & space by bringing the harshness to the next level. In the truest veing of black flag's process of weeding out they introduce the album & at your breaking point they segue into the deaf retard mutant jams youve grown to love.

Nobody
Jukeboxseries 100-09
PS, US Nobody is the 27-year old somebody named Elvin Estela, an LA vinyl junkie hypnotized by analog waves and creates albums mirroring phases of his stereo obsessions. His first two albums on Ubiquity Records were a hip-hop/cosmic jazz statement springing from early studio days & back alley freestyle sessions. Estela is also part of SAVATH & SAVALAS (PREFUSE 73). Two psychedelic hip-hop tracks called "Tilijems Castle" & "Tilijems Forest." Both are instrumentals

Beatings
Holding On To Hand Grenades (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)

Melancholic lyrics, scream-sung counterpoint harmonies & hair-raising guitar leads front a pummeling, thunderous rhythm section that swings unexpected shifts in tempo & turns songs on a dime. Compared to Hüsker Dü,Mission of Burma and the Pixies for their erratic guitar work & abrasive vocal stylings.

Casiotone For The Painfully Alone
Young Shields (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 25TH)
PS, US Owen Ashworth finally jettisons the confines of lo-fi minimalism for an expanded production palette. A bite sized intro to his new CFTPA made in conjunction w/ Jherek Bischoff (DEAD SCIENCE, DEGENERATE ART ENSEMBLE. A driving, menacing anthem with its cold synths, frantic drum machines, & pulsing bass undermined by Ashworth's signature monotone, it is a brilliantly bitter narrative that stands as the most confident & sinister track in the Casiotone songbook. The single's b-side is an electro reworking of of Prince's "When You Were Mine," which features guest vocals from XIU XIU's Caralee McElroy, & somehow manages to sound giddy and gloomy at the same time. CD also features 2 beautifully retrofitted CFTPA classics from their sold out Alphabet Series 7": "Roberta C" appears here as a huge, swooning epic with a full string arrangement and a ridiculous, floor-killing beat, and "The Subway Home" has been reworked as a darkly beautiful dirge which pairs Ashworth's raspy baritone
with Bischoff's skeletal contrabass arrangement.

Cat Power
The Greatest (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US This is not a greatest hits album, despite the title. It contains all-original songs written by Chan Marshall (professionally known as Cat Power), and features the great Memphis session musicians Teenie Hodges on guitar, Leroy Hodges on bass (Al Green, Hi Rhythm Section), drummer Steve Potts, and more. The combination of Marshall's superbly evocative and flexible voice plus some of the greatest Southern soul players, has produced a masterpiece. These songs explore themes of Southern loss, longing, and marginality.

Clearlake
Amber (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US 2000's debut, "Lido" sparked a sell-out UK tour and won plaudits from all sorts of stellar peers and heroes. 2003's "Cedars" established them in the US and Canada, along with a two-month visit that included dates with Stereolab and The Decemberists. This is the follow-up. From mesmeric to buzzy Byrdsy rush to Kinksy oomph to countrified lament, it's their wildest, deepest, most surprising album so far. Produced by Clearlake's Jason Pegg with Steve Osborne (U2) and Jim Abbiss (DJ Shadow, Arctic Monkeys).
Domino
CD
$13.75

Cluster
Cluster '71 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US On the outer edge of German space rock, Cluster '71 stands as a testament to minimalist "cosmische" music. The 3 untitled tracks composed and performed by Moebius and Roedelius are exploratory, ever-changing pieces with focuses on guitar distortion and synthesizer wails, though each goes far beyond. This album deserves the many accolades it's been given, and holds up as an early landmark in the history of beatless ambience.

Comus
First Utterance (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 27TH)
PS, US Comus' first album contains an imaginative if elusive brand of experimental folk-rock, with a tense and sometimes distressed vibe. Although there are elements of traditional British folk music, there's an edginess to the songwriting & arrangements that would be entirely alien in a Fairport Convention or Pentangle disc. At times, this straddles the border between folk-rock and the kind of songs you'd expect to be sung at a witches' brew fest, the haunting supernatural atmosphere enhanced by bursts of what sound like a theramin-like violin, hand drums, flute, oboe, ghostly female backup vocals, and detours into almost tribal rhythms.
Breathless-52002
CD
$17.25

Copy
Mobius Beard (PRE-ORDER: JANUARY 10TH)
PS, US Combining dense harmonies, delivered in an 8- bit baroque electro style somewhere between Yellow Magic Orchestra & Ratatat, w/ snap-tight digital reminiscent of Dabrye. Fuzzy bass synths ride syncopated drum patterns, jump-cutting into ambient spaces & cresting in victorious melodic themes. The result is a crossover work of electronic pop that will appeal to both hardcore sound boys, IDM nerds & the casual listening masses. Get lost in melodic contemplation or bounce, pump a fist, and strain your neck to the beat.
AudioDregs-061
CD
$14.50

Delta 5
Singles And Sessions - 1979-81 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US Part of the Leeds/UK art/music scene in the late '70s that launched The Gang Of Four and The Mekons, Delta 5 was signed to Rough Trade after only a few months in existence, and released their first single, "Mind Your Own Business/Now That You've Gone" in 1979. BBC host and producer John Peel requested the band do a "Sessions" gig for him and they were officially on their way. Relentless touring with The Gang Of Four, Echo And The Bunnymen, B52s, The Specials, The Teardrop Explodes, and U2 put the group on the map. They continued until various members departed in 1981, when they recorded one last single and broke up in 1982. This release contains long unavailable material as well as the never before released Peel Sessions.

Diskaholics Anonymous
Trio-Weapons of Ass.. (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 16TH)
PS, US ...Destruction. Trio consisting of the less than anonymous THURSTON MOORE (gtr) & JIM O'ROURKE (synth) (SONIC YOUTH) & Swedish free jazz legend MATS GUSTAFSSON (sax, electronics). Avant/punk/noise/free jazz. Moore's guitar will make you think of NY in the 80's and Sonic Youth around the time of "Bad Moon Rising." O'Rourke's laptop was last heard on Wilco's monumental "Less Than You Think" on A Ghost Is Born. Mats Gustafsson sounds like Albert Ayler playing punk rock. The result of these three titans clashing together is an intense blow-out. Raw, grandiose & brutally beautiful. Rec. live in Sweden in 2002.

Durrett, Liz
Mezzanine, The (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US In contrast to Liz's previous work, her second release is a surprisingly hi-fi affair. Gone are the hissing ghosts and unsure echoes that once haunted and obscured her recordings. Her voice and guitar are the focus here, and she performs with more energy, determination, and flat out rawness than ever before. These eleven songs cover a lot of ground. Produced by Vic Chesnutt and engineered by Andy Baker (Macha, Japancakes, Glands).

$12.50

East River Pipe
What Are You On? (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US This sixth release (and first new East River Pipe record since 2003's "Garbageheads On Endless Stun") is another magical, intimate album, one that continues to justify Rolling Stone's claim that F.M. Cornog is "one of our generation's great eccentric songwriters". Fans of SMOG, Mercury Rev, and My Morning Jacket should take notice of Cornog's mastery.

PS, US VINYL VERSION!!!
SubPop
LP
$11.75

Elected
Sun, Sun, Sun (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US The rope-strong, luminous follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2004 debut, "Me First". Recorded while singer/songwriter Blake Sennett was on tour with his other band, Rilo Kiley, the album is propelled by the kind of unsettled, exploratory impetus that's only native to the American open road. While portions of the album were recorded in studios, Sennett recorded and produced the majority of his creations in environments he was passing through. The dichotomy between feeling completely at home and at the same time homeless on the road fuels Sennett's biting, reflective lyricism and grand, sweeping compositions.

Ester Drang
Rocinate (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US On their third full-length, Ester Drang catapult even further into their patented synth-dripped rhythms, throbbing percussion, rising horns, and post-grazer grandeur, having as much in common with Brian Eno's mournful drone as they do The Notwist's passionate textures. A beautiful ensemble of tracks that prove songs not only have the power to elevate or to infiltrate, but when properly strung together, can be as transcendent as they are moving.
JadeTree
CD
$14.50

Everlovely Lightningheart
Cusp (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US This collaborative is an entity capable of producing, perverting, destroying, distributing, stealing, and selling a vast and sprawling array of existing as well as unheard of forms of cultural products and concepts. Their performances range from serene to chaotic. Including anywhere from two to a dozen performers, each is a truly unique experience. They've played shows with Isis, These Arms Are Snakes, Pelican, Bastard Noise, and more. As well as playing the conventional club circuit, they've also been included as part of several museum and art collective events. They document every performance with audio, video, and photography, creating an extensive library of work. "Cusp" is beautiful in its chaos and simplicity. It is a humbling and sad composition, the sort of sadness that tunes the listener into the physical state of humanity.

PS, US VINYL VERSION!!!
5RueChristine

$8.75

Excepter
Sunbomber (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US This EP serves as a launching pad into the visionary plane of the modern-day barnstormer. Excepter is a synthetic protest band engineered to erase cultural distinctions through polarized confusion. They're damaged where Black Dice are experimental, and primitive and impulsive where Animal Collective are whimsical. This is full-fledged ambient house, maybe calypso but who's counting, unafraid of its reggae roots, too. A band to watch.

Faithfull, Marianne
Come My Way (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 27TH)
PS, US In 1965 Marianne Faithful released 2 debut albums simultaneously, a self-titled pop album and an album called Come My Way comprised somewhat unexpectedly of folk tunes. While the 1st album generally reaffirmed her persona as she-devil and soulless poster child of that hedonistic generation, the latter gave listeners a fleeting glimpse of a hidden darker side, perhaps an unintentional foretelling of those black days that would soon follow. This reissue, available briefly in the UK and Japan, feat. 4 bonus tracks: her classic 1969 single "Sister Morphine," released prior to the Rolling Stones' version, the 1964 B-side "Blowin' in the Wind," "Et Maintenant," from a 1965 EP and the 1966 B-side "That's Right Baby."
Lilith-104
CD
$18.00

Film School
S/T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US Film School is a band with impressively eclectic influences (Pink Floyd, The Who, obscure electronica, metal, drone, alternative '80s), a grandiose collective musical history, and a healthy bout of critical acclaim. "Wonderfully off-kilter pop songs" - NME. "As their name implies, Film School creates sounds with a cinematic eye...This four-song EP is a compact 23-minute trip that proves this San Francisco quintet have serious dibs on becoming leaders if Haight-Ashbury is ever to rise again" - CMJ. Rave live reviews in the NME and The Fly followed their UK visit in September 2004, supporting TV On The Radio. The Sunday Times Culture Magazine hailed them as one of the new bands that "should be huge", and Music Week included them in their rundown of the "eleven buzz bands on the brink of greater things."

Gossip
Standing In The Way Of Control (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US The first thing that strikes you is the rhythm. The Gossip have been making punks dance since they debuted five years ago, long before dance punk existed. Soulful and jagged, you can hear everything from Dischord to Motown. The vocals resonate with the confidence of the lyrics, asking people to hold on just a little bit longer, reassuring youth that there are others out there, and spitting in the face of all who say otherwise. Their third album was recorded by Guy Picciotto (Fugazi). This is the sound of a band destroying and surpassing all expectations placed on them.

Hollingsworth, Taylor
Tragic City (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US "Taylor Hollingsworth and his band are sloppy and wild in the mode of The Stooges or The MC5 (or The Rolling Stones at their worst), which are likely models, yet this band's overall tone often recalls bands such as The Only Ones or The Heartbreakers. If they played fast and hard instead of loose and slinky, they could even be The Saints. A lot of the sloppiness is salvaged, or accented, by white-hot guitar runs that take the sound into Johnny Thunders territory, by way of Billy Gibbons. Vocals, for the most part, remain in the more disturbing/intriguing range of Peter Perret and Nikki Sudden, so you can see why it is difficult to accept this band's approach as just a happy accident" - Black & White.

National Trust, The
Kings And Queens (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US Their second full-length is a freaky conflation of dance music, like a 31-flavor ice cream social on a hot summer's day where bongos and subs keep time for a gaggle of face-painters, genies, and roller-queens, but it's more about lifestyle than any generic allegiance or retro revivalism. The band calls it "body music". "Kings And Queens" makes nods to disco, house, and pop, as well as what the band members heard around them on the streets, in parks, and in clubs. Equally present are Chicago-style horns, R&B falsetto, Latino percussion, and bass lines with more soul than a gospel choir. Produced by Abel Garabaldi, engineer for R. Kelly, Fat Joe, Ciara, and Britney Spears.

Rema Rema
Wheel In The Roses (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 10TH)
PS, US 25 years after this record launched 4AD as a label under Ivo's exclusive guidance, REMA-REMA's 'Wheel In The Roses' is being re-issued in a strictly limited edition of 1000 CD's. While the early Axis label singles had served an important research and development function, the arrival of Rema-Rema provided Ivo with something more important: a reason for continuing. Returning to the shop one afternoon to find five people about to play Peter their demo tape, Ivo was immediately struck by the post-punk quintet's music, later saying, "It was the first point I knew that we were actually doing something serious." The band consisted of Gary Asquith (guitar/vocals), Marco Pirroni (guitar), Mick Allen (bass/vocals), Mark Cox (keyboards) and Max (drums). Their sole EP, Wheel In The Roses, featured one side of studio recordings and another of live material. Their songs "Fond Affections" and "Rema-Rema" were later covered by This Mortal Coil and Big Black respectively. Rema-Rema split u
p shortly after the EP's release in April 1980. Pirroni later hit the big time with Adam And The Ants. Asquith, Allen and Cox formed the short-lived Mass with Danny Briottet. Asquith then moved on to Renegade Soundwave, while Cox and Allen stayed with 4AD as part of The Wolfgang Press.

They listen to all kinds of music and when they're done, throw it all in the pot. No compromises, just a swampy mass of influences frothing and bubbling until it sounds nothing like its composite parts. "Part ear-bleed punk-funk, part old skool rap. PS, US CD version has been out of print for 14 years. Re-mastered & repackaged. Known as the most left field, & at the same time most hard edged, band in all of England, their concerts attracted Experimental, Punk & New Wave audiences alike. Over time it has also proved itself prescient; there are musical innovations here that anticipate genres that would take another 15 years to reappear. Votolato, Rocky
Makers (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US Soundtracked by the songs of Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash, Rocky had an unconventional upbringing on a horse ranch in Texas before his mother moved the family to Seattle. There he spent his high school years discovering the underground punk/indie scene. Inspired by bands like Fugazi, he and his brother Cody (founding member of hardcore/art combo The Blood Brothers) formed a punk band called Waxwing. Over the course of three increasingly accomplished solo albums, Rocky has matured into a truly phenomenal talent. "Makers" is an amazing album of songs that seem to have been scratched into a boxcar wall by a worn out and lonesome ghost. "Votolato has stones like Bruce Springsteen and hangover wisdom like Paul Westerberg" - Alternative Press.

We Are The Fury
Infinite Jest (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 24TH)
PS, US If early 70's glam and late 70's post punk had a love child in 2005, We Are The Fury would be it. However, they're not your average lo-fi regurgitation. With influences ranging from Bowie and T-Rex to Talking Heads and Television, We Are The Fury reveal a truly unique sound and style. "We Are The Fury cause an electric rage of keyboard, guitar, drums, and bass that creates an almost manic excitement that is rarely matched by any other band" -Skratch Magazine. For fans of Head Automatica, Hot Hot Heat, Ima Robot, and My Chemical Romance. Produced by Tim Patalan (Lovedrug, Sponge, The Fags).

Wolfgang Press
The Burden Of Mules (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 10TH)
PS, US One of 4AD's longest serving acts, The Wolfgang Press were formed by Michael Allen (vocals, bass) and Mark Cox (keyboards) in 1983. The pair had previously played alongside future Adam And The Ants guitarist Marco Pirroni in Rema-Rema, who cut one EP for the label in 1980. They then briefly reunited in Mass, who managed a single and an album before disbanding (Mass colleagues Gary Asquith and Danny Briottet went on to form Renegade Soundwave). The Wolfgang Press' debut album, The Burden Of Mules, ploughed a similar post-punk furrow to Rema-Rema and Mass. It featured guest contributions from fellow 4AD signings Richard Thomas (Dif Juz) and David Steiner (In Camera), plus, crucially, guitarist Andrew Gray. The latter soon joined the group full-time.

Wooden Wand & Vanishing Voice
Voice- Gipsy Freedom (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 21ST)
PS, US This is the sound of them combining their sound more fluently than ever before. Compensating for the relative dearth of wooden instruments this time around is guest star DANIEL CARTER. This is both their most confounding & rewarding release. You may hear faint echos of Albert Ayler on one track, Iommi-derived riffage on the next, torch songs that sound torn straight from a Gershwin songbook on the next & Can style epic grooves on the next. The sound of a band breaking out of the box & using the discarded shapes to construct strange new universes.
