Parasol New Arrivals • July 02, 2007

Hi Folks,

First of all, we’re sure that you’ve already prepared yourselves for family get-togethers, cookouts, swimming pools and watching the sky ignite after sundown. Second of all, be sure to pull out your Explosions In The Sky records for this joyous occasion.

Not a whole lot to report this week but get ready for an extremely heavy new release day of the 10th. Spoon, Caribou, Arcade Fire, Justice, Ulrich Schnauss, Sigur Ros, Interpol and Buffalo Tom will all be dropping their latest offerings that day so be sure to send a memo to your ears alerting them to keep their day planners clear.

Enough from us. Lets move on to the reason you’re reading this in the first place. Plenty of good stuff to sift through so with that said, enjoy the list and we’ll meet you back here next week.

Stop, drop and roll,

Royal & Paul

16 Bitch Pile Up/Mike Shifet
Split
PS, US Mike Shiflet has produced some of the more interesting tapes & whatnot of midwestern out-ness from his Gameboy label & from his legendary duo tour w/ BURNING STAR CORE/C. SPENCER YEH. Like the amazing beard he has sported since childhood his music is a free-fall of acoustic wonder. 16 Bitch Pile-Up are into producing a wholly personal thrombosis of noise improvisation. These recordings by both artists were done when both were still residents of Ohio & reflect that time & space right before each other's exodus. They're raw & righteous & ready for you to take a bite.

AMP
All of Yesterday Tomorrow
PS, UK 'All of Yesterday Tomorrow' is a collection of singles, non-album and compilation tracks, and unreleased material by Amp, the experimental music and sound collective. In its fifteen-year history, Amp - the "trans_European esoterrorists" - has become a towering antiestablishment in contemporary and experimental music. Comprised of the core duo of Richard Amp and singer Karine Charff, Amp has released music on a raft of renowned international record labels, including the seminal Kranky, Wurlitzer Jukebox, Darla Records and Space Age Recordings. The Amp collective operatives have been drawn from an equally enviable list of bands - from the legendary Third Eye Foundation, Flying Saucer Attack, Spiritualized and Julian Cope, to the distinguished Laika, Movietone, Gallon Drunk and Prolapse. 'All of Yesterday Tomorrow' compiles 38 tracks spanning over a decade of Amp's oeuvre - including 12 unreleased songs, versions and outtakes, the 10 tracks from the out of print 1998 singles album, 'Passé • Présent', and 16 more non_album, vinyl_only and compilation tracks.

Arcade Fire
Intervention
PS, US From the first giant blast of the church organ, its clear that this is one of the grandest songs they have written so far. And how do you get any grander than that? Well, by inviting famed Arizona veterans, CALEXICO, to contribute horn parts to "Ocean of Noise" a song they liked so much - they recorded their own version - which appears as the b-side here!

Bailey, Derek
Standards
PS, US With chunks of standards seamlessly integrated. Of course it works perfectly, & it makes one wonder why such material has routinely been so absent, even forbidden, in music that is described as free. More curiously the sleeve notes feel they have to explain & justify the admixture - a squirm Derek himself wisely keeps out of. I'd forget the packaging & the idea that this is something odd or special. It works.

Each song lives & breathes in its own little world. Ex-ADD N TO X members yearning to make a different kind of music, one that was at the same time familiar & yet alien, pop fluff w/ hidden spikes.

Black To Comm/Aosuke
Split LP
PS, GERMANY This vinyl-only split-lp release is a meeting of two of the most interesting bands coming out of Hamburg, Germany at this moment, both continuing the long tradition of both challenging and explorative music coming from this city in the last decades. From krautrock to the origins of the so-called neue deutsche welle from experimental sound artists to some of the finest pop ambient, hamburg is regularly spitting out some of the most singular artists on this planet. Both Aosuke and Black To Comm have absorbed influences from all these sources (and a million others) while working towards their very own individual vision. The two brand new tracks by Black To Comm are continuing the massive organ/voice drone alchemy of the last double-lp while refining and personalizing his sound, reaching new heights of blazing sonic mysticism. Aosuke have decided to home-record their new material, continuing their loop-oriented, monotone yet highly melodic ambient journeys. Working with repetition and small abstractions, all instrumental "loops" are played by hand and recorded live without overdubs (one of the main principles of the guitar/electronics duo), creating surprisingly concrete dormant and somnambulistic soundscapes while fortunately completely lacking the washy and drowsy effects of most ambient music. Black To Comm is the one-man project of Marc Richter who is the brain behind the Dekorder label as well. So far he has released two albums on his own label ("rückwärts backwards" and "wir können leider nicht etwas mehr zu tun..."). Aosuke is the duo of Tobert Knopp and Ulf Schütte, the latter being a label head as well (tape tektoniks). Last year they have released their debut "monotone spirits" album co-released by Hamburg's Audiolith label and South Germany's Meudiademorte label.

Hailing from Steven's Point, WI there's not much else to do but rock out & smash stuff.

Dupree, Taylor & Christopher Willits
Listening Garden
PS, US Limited to 1000. LINE presents the latest collaboration between artists Taylor Deupree (12k) and Christopher Willits (12k, Ghostly International). Often known for their skittering and melodic blend of guitar and synthesizer, Deupree and Willits are heard here creating "ambient music" in one of its true definitions of spatial "wallpaper" sound, although in Listening Garden's case, the walls are glass and sky. Listening Garden was originally developed as a sonic alteration of two quiet indoor/outdoor tea spaces installed at the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media in Yamaguchi, Japan, in June of 2004. The audio installation was designed to heighten visitor's senses and alter the sonic space as they sat, read, or had quiet conversation amongst the trees. Taylor Deupree and Christopher Willits composed a number of short, randomly sequenced multi-channel soundworks using guitar and electronics. The fragments of sounds, while both gentle and subtly richer, are intentionally weathered, eroded and understated, generating a sonic bridge between the digital work of sound and the audio sphere of nature. The audio on this CD is built from location recordings taken in the garden over the course of a week during the exhibit. The environmental and incidental sounds played a large part of the physical work and are captured and utilized in the recording. Listening Garden is meant to enhance the experience of simply sitting and enjoying one's place in time. This CD is best heard in a similar situation and at a low background level. Headphones are not recommended.

Friedl, Eribert
tra[k]_t
PS, US Limited edition of 500. "This is the final work in the series of works-encompassing ataraxia, bradycard, trans~, and back forward-using the cymbalon as source material. The process of working with this hammered stringed instrument for this series has been a "discussion" between the instrument and myself, an exploration of traditional playing, digital processing, and mixtures of both.I feel that trac[k]_t should convey the scope of using an instrument without losing both its intrinsic nature of engagement as well as the sound of how it is played. Being a conceptual work, rather than a kind of "tract," the process of this recording has become a kind of instruction for myself to understand not only my work with this instrument in of itself but also its communion with digital processes. The work is to be continuation in sound from my previous works. While not a repetition of ideas and sounds, rather it has become more of a search for the essence of this instrument. The way of working with it to come to a satisfiable conclusion and summation."Heribert Friedl lives in Vienna where he studied sculpture at the University of Applied Arts. In his exhibitions he has been working with scents and its non visual phenomenons - sometimes in combination with sounds. He has had exhibitions, sound performances and projects in Hungary, Germany, England, Italy, USA, Cuba and Austria.Since 1998 he has worked solo and in collaboration with artists such as Bernhard GŸnter, John Norman (Radian) and Dale Lloyd. In addition to the utilization of digital sounds and field recordings, Friedl been using sounds of cymbalon and zither in his most recent series of works.Friedl follows the kind of minimalist aesthetics that composes with few sounds, small events, and nearly imperceptible movements.

Released less than a year after their second album "Feelings for Something Lost", "Höstluft" was made by David Wenngren during the end of 2006 and the beginning of 2007. PS, US Now a sound all their own, jerking around w/tricky rhythms & beautiful squeals, carving a road map into the black, tar stained, abyss. Can I call it pop Kevin Elliot World of Wumme "Stumf's songs are much leaner...& benefit from the tense guitar noise & fat trimmed writing. Tightly wound B-side 'Van v. Night of Pleasure
Godard vs. Truffeau
PS, US No matter what a band is doing, if they're rockin', the rockin' can't be denied. NOP rocks out hard under cover of reductive 4-track production, making for a pretty blown-out time. The barking vocals lend themselves to this format, maybe a little bit better than the songs do, as without the nuance of zero-dollar production, their amped-up material might sound like a stunt of some kind. Yet they do know how to rock, with big riffs & some out of control guitar histrionics. I think we have a winner here!" -Doug Mosurak Dusted.

RF & Lili De Mora
Eleven Continents
PS, US Acoustic / Indie / Dream Pop. For the fans of: Kings of Convenience, Azure Ray, Joanna Newsom, RF, The Year Zero, Familiar Trees. "In addition to Ryan Francesconi's deftly picked guitar and Lili De La Mora's breathy voice, wisps of cello, trumpet, flute, and harp drift through the album gentle as a breeze, never upsetting its delicate balance. The result is music that moves efficiently without sounding hollow and artificial, music that is full of embellishment while sounding neither gaudy nor ostentatious. The album's finest moments, though, come when the silvery tones of Joanna Newsom's harp join the mix. The album's title track unfurls to reveal a rushing, ever-growing spiral of graceful guitars, playful harp strings, and fragile, pensive vocals. Every note sounds as if it has been bathed in silvery twilight." - Jason Morehead, OpusZine

Slaraffenland
Private Cinema
PS, US Based in Copenhagen, Slaraffenland found its final formation in 2002: Christian Taagehøj, Mike Taagehøj, Bjørn Heebøll, Niklas Antonsson, and Jeppe Skjold. They expertly expanded on the guitar-bass-drums standard with brass and woodwind instruments, various racketmakers, and transfixing gang vocals. Many of them childhood friends (and Mike and Christian identical twins), they've spent years developing a sound that conjures everything from free jazz to noise to melodious addictive rock. PITCHFORK: "This Danish quintet's first full-length release on Home Tapes is a full of dark and radiant songs that compete and unite at equal turns. The album opens with the peaceful, anemic bombast of "Sleep Tight", its winds and strings chugging through crashes of cymbals and bass. An ominous chorus of voices enforces a marching cadence, but the precision breaks midway for guitars and distant howls reminiscent of Animal Collective's Campfire Songs... The album as a whole is a brave perambulation, drawing on the acidic thunderstorms and gorgeous lullabies of two great Icelandic exports (Björk on "You Win" and Sigur Rós for aching closer "How Far Would You Go"). In music, it's not often that this borderline overindulgence, where structure and uniformity are all but forgotten, works. But here the members of Slaraffenland showcase their virtuoso skills and shared vision, always modestly." (Liz Colville)

Uton
Alitaju Ylimina
PS, GERMANY Uton is the one-man project of Jani Hirvonen originally hailing from Tampere and currently travelling and recording in India. Hirvonen is one of the most active musicians of the Finnish underground scene that has recently presented us the likes of Kuupuu, Kemialliset Vstävät, Islaja, Paavoharju and Lau Nau and a seemingly never-ending stream of beautiful and highly original record releases. The music of Uton is no exception there, drawing inspirations from psychedelia to free jazz to pure ecstatic drones and noises using a wide range of acoustic instruments from various parts of the globe and a bulk of electronics. Recorded in glorious lo-fi the mystery of Hirvonen's sound is difficult to pinpoint; sheer ravishing beauty, elegancy and variegation is stashed behind a wall of grey, inscrutable haze - gorgeous melodies and voices, reeds and alien sounds gleaming through the mist from time to time, shimmering like diamonds through layers of dust. Uton has previously released dozens of cd's, cd-r's and cassettes on a myriad of labels including jewelled antler, pseudo arcana, last visible dog, digitalis and his own ikuisuus. He has collaborated with amon dude (avarus), anla courtis (reynols), antony milton (black boned angel), ben reynolds, peter wright, phil todd (ashtray navigations) and jan anderzen (tomutonttu, kemialliset ystävät) among others. The latter collaboration (under the hevoset moniker) will be released on lp by dekorder later this year.

On Matchless Years Aarktica embraces the spirit of the best works of brethren Jesus And Mary Chain, Spiritualized, and Magnetic Fields, as well as a progression toward "dark disco" and a meshing of 1950's vocal pop sensibilities atop Aarktica's established atmospheric sound. The tradition of moody pop aural heroin has never sounded so comfortable. Matchless Years is by far Aarktica's strongest and most accessible work to date and is sure to gain them new fans. Personell: Jon DeRosa - vocals, guitars, bass, percussion, pump organ, harmonium, gamelan bells. Aaron Spectre (Drumcorps) - drum programs, Chris Carrico (ex-Crucifer) - electric guitar, Charles Newman (Magnetic Fields, Stephin Merritt producer)- organ, keyboard, Mike Pride - drums, percussion, Seth Misterka - alto saxophone, James Duncan - trumpet, Gretta Cohn (ex-Bright Eyes/Cursive)- cello, Kendall Jane Meade (Mascott) - backing vocals, Ernie Adzentoivich - electric & upright bass. Ariel Kill Him
Named After You (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 10TH)
PS, JAPAN "Named After You" is the first new full-length album by Ariel Kill Him (aka David Lehnberg of Gävle, Sweden) since 2003's successful "In The Pyramid" (10,000 copies sold in the US, Japan and Europe). Although more electronic than AKH's three previous albums, "Named After You" feels more organic; an effect which Lehnberg achieved by keeping his arrangements stripped down and spontaneous. The Quince release features two bonus tracks, "It's Christmas" and "With Celesta." Lehnberg was the singer for Lelah (3 albums) and currently sings and writes songs with the band Ikaros (1 album so far). For fans of Mum, Sagor & Swing, Mew, Jeniferever, Stina Nordenstam and The Gloria Record.

Art In Manila
Set The Woods On Fire (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 7TH)
PS, US After Azure Ray disbanded, member Orenda Fink put her energies into a solo record in 2005, called "Invisible Ones". Upon touring in support of that album with various revolving band members, she chose the cream of the crop and formed a new group called Art Belle, then changed it to Art In Manila (a nod to radio host Art Bell's exodus to the Phillipines). On this release, the band flirts playfully with genre wanderlust without ever abandoning cohesion. Moody slow-burners follow four-to-the-floor rockers that butt up against serene ballads. A powerful debut.

Boat
Let's Drag Our Feet! (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 10TH)
PS, US BOAT is back with their second LP entitled, "Let's Drag Our Feet!". Recorded in the basement in Seattle, Washington, the trio has improved upon the lofi sound of their debut. This time out, each song is an anthem. Slightly fuzzy vocals collide with simple guitar lines, start stop drumming, handclaps, la las, ba bas, ooh oohs, slippery theremin, some 8 bit Nintendo keyboard sounds, electronic kazoo, double trumpet, and enough energy to make you play air drums or shout out lyrics in the car /office/deli/wherever you spend your days. Seattle's BOAT proudly takes it's place along side the ranks of the rejected with it's debut LP - Corey duBrowa Magnet BOAT's somehow able to rein all those elements in to create playful, catchy-as-hell pop jams that will lodge themselves into your heads and your hearts and refuse to come out. - GorillavsBear [SLOPPY POP] BOAT's ridiculously charming pop songs have burrowed into my psyche, and I don't think they're leaving anytime soon. The Seattle trio's hand-clappin' clunky pop tunes come off as ultra-fun, but D. Crane's half-sung, half-shouted lyrics prove him not only a great smart-ass, but a thoughful and sympathetic narrator, too. - AMY MCCULLOUGH Willamette Week Boat's songs are great: part solid and charming melodic pop drenched with narratives and part goofy but endearing indie rock laced with the sounds of a drunken orchestra. So thanks for the warning, Boat, but next time, don't be afraid to put yourselves out there. You're pretty fuckin' rad. - MEGAN SELING The Stranger.

Carta
The Glass Bottom Boat (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 21ST)
PS, UK The fruits of a lengthy process involving an ever-changing line-up featuring a revolving door of San Francisco musicians, this is the long-awaited debut from Carta, now with settled personnel surrounding core member Kyle Monday. Engineered by Beulah's Eli Crews and featuring Sacha Galvagna and Jared Matt Greenberg (Charles Atlas) and Alexander Kort (Subtle) amongst others, 'The Glass Bottom Boat' is a remarkably accomplished album, as one might expect considering the pedigree of those involved. Having found a home on eclectic UK label Resonant, Carta's audience should be broad and widespread, with their overall sound avoiding pigeonholes. The album is mostly instrumental, predominantly downtempo but with constant emphasis on melody. The title track features full vocals from Sarah Bell, and sounds like the best thing Espers have ever recorded. Packaged in lavish six-panel digipak. Early review from US site www.thesilentballet.com: 'It's rare that we see an album that is so grounded in reality, yet simultaneously this is immaculately breathtaking.'

Dolour
The Years in the Wilderness (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 10TH)
PS, JAPAN The fourth and strongest album to date by Shane Tutmarc's Dolour, "The Years in the Wilderness" is an ambitious 19-song set split up into two parts: the bombastic, occasionally dark rock of Storm & Stress and the lighter, but moody, jazz-pop of Hell or Highwater. The new album is a departure from Dolour's previous albums, New Old Friends (2004) and Suburbiac (2002), which were very manicured, production-heavy albums, featuring hundreds of over-dubs performed by Tutmarc himself. On this album, Tutmarc looked to the past to find a fresh way to record; inspired by Miles Davis's recording sessions, he gathered his favorite musicians and let the songs come together live in a Seattle studio over two very full sessions. Storm & Stress combines the grandeur of Led Zeppelin's more ambitious tracks with the pop-noise of the Pixies and Nirvana. Hell or Highwater showcases Tutmarc's love for traditional American songwriting, with nods to gospel, country, Americana, and Tin Pan Alley. Themes of love, spiritual yearning, and self-doubt lend a warmth and depth to this music that is beyond Tutmarc's years.

Durutti Column
Idiot Savants (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 17TH)
PS, UK The Durutti Column follow-up 2006's Keep Breathing with a brand new album, Idiot Savants. Written and played by Vini Reilly, with drums and percussion from the Guru himself, Bruce Mitchell. The Durutti Column emerged from the late 70s Manchester punk scene and has remained one of the most intriguing, enigmatic (and arguably under appreciated) acts in the country. The band name is derived from a 60s anarchist movement. - an anarchist group in Europe who published a book with a sandpaper cover so that it would destroy all the other books on the shelves. He borrowed the practice of using sandpaper as a packaging medium, until record shops forced him to stop, fed up of the stock surrounding the Durutti Column being destroyed. Despite the tremendous critical acclaim that greeted his music, Vini Reilly seldom performed live during the early 1980s. The days of gigging with Joy Division were over and Vini became a virtual recluse. However his reputation grew and by the 90s Durutti Column's legendary status made them a cult attraction all over the world, a position they maintain to this day.

Fine Arts Showcase, The
Sings Rough Bunnies (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 2007)
PS, SWEDEN Third album from Gustaf Kjellvander's Fine Arts Showcase, and the follow-up to his 110% brilliant. The short version: TFAS covers 11 song by Swedish cult-twee-punk-lofi duo The Rough Bunnies. Highly recommended. The long version: This is an album of many stories. Gustaf Kjellvander and his friends in The Fine Arts Showcase have made a covers album, entirely based on songs from the Swedish, rather unknown, jangly, lo-fi band Rough Bunnies. Why is that? Let's make Gustaf himself explain: "I was first introduced to Anna Vermina and her cousin Frida, the founding members of Rough Bunnies and Inside Riot, through mutual friends. Frida gave me a CD-R just days before they were about to move to Berlin. About six months later I was looking for someone to rent my spare room. I bumped into Frida by chance, who told me she had moved back from Berlin to Malmö and needed a place to stay - so she moved in. I was already smitten by Inside Riot at this time, and when Frida played me the songs they had recorded in Berlin, along with the Rough Bunnies record C-sides, it blew me away. I played it to everyone who came over to my house. They became an obsession that carries on to this day. I knew I wanted the Fine Arts Showcase to cover their songs. The problem was that with a catalogue of songs as amazing as theirs it was hard to pick just one, so I came up with the idea that we should do an entire record instead (in the Merle Haggard sings Jimmy Rodgers tradition). And here it is: a musical love letter to two of my favorite songwriters, a celebration of the pop geniuses of the Vermina family. Rough Bunnies (and their twin group Inside Riot) have inspired me more than any other band this side of the millennium and this record is my way of thanking them. Rough Bunnies Saved My Life" - Gustaf Kjellvander

Frank, Bob & Murry, John
The Gun Play EP (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 17TH)
PS, UK "The Gunplay EP", released in Europe on Decor Records in May 2007 during Bob Frank and John Murry's month-long tour there in support of "World Without End", was originally meant to be recorded as a supplement to the full length album mentioned previously. Instead, this "EP", if a ten-song record can truly be called an EP, is filled with the work of the same musicians who participated in the recording of "World Without End" and was once again produced and recorded by Tim Mooney of American Music Club. "The Gunplay EP" resurrects 4 old murder ballads from stagnation and gives them back their original lyrics, sanitized to suit broader audiences through the years. In addition, it includes the newly-penned "Gary Gilmore, 1977", written by Bob and John specifically for this EP. It also includes two live recordings, both songs from "World Without End": "Joaquin Murietta, 1853" and "Boss Weatherford, 1933". "..and then they immediately record a stunning EP in addition. The work of Frank and Murry is filled with ferocity and brilliance." -- Allan Jones, UNCUT Magazine "..beautifully dark and depressing. This is sure to become an underground hit." --Whitney Matheson, USA Today "4/5 Stars" --Joe Breen, The Irish Times "Oppressive, claustrophobic, and extraordinary. Just make sure you listen with the lights on." --Brian Denny, Morning Star, Britain.

Green Pajamas, The
Box of Secrets: Northern Gothic 2 (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 31ST)
PS, US New album of psychedelic pop from Seattle veterans The Green Pajamas, mining childhood nostalgia on their new album... Box Of Secrets is a conceptual album, a follow up if you will to 'Northern Gothic' (Camera Obscura, 2002), with three intertwining themes running through it: local legends, characters, and personal mythology. Inspired less by arcane literature and more by The Green Pajamas three songwriters' own childhood experiences: 70's TV movies dealing with gothic themes of murder, secrets, the supernatural; along with small town life in the Pacific Northwest, the vague setting for many of the songs is the Washington coast. The mostly fictional stories enclosed within this 'Box of Secrets' evoke a shared memory or that spooky sweet nostalgia, whether lived or not. Though the subject matter is dark, the music and songs themselves promise to be a bit more rocking and psychedelic, moreso than their last true studio album '21st Century Séance', which explored more mellow moods... CITY BEAT REVIEW: "File the Green Pajamas under 'the best band you've never heard'. The Seattle collective, led by Pop mastermind Jeff Kelly, routinely releases jaw-dropping albums that melt in the ear like a lysergic caramel from the Sgt. Pepper chocolate sampler."

Lights Out Asia
Tanks and Recognizers (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 17TH)
PS, US Wisconsin post-celestial-shoegazer trio Lights Out Asia delivers their sophomore full length and debut for n5MD titled Tanks and Recognizers. This follow-up to their critic and fan favorite Garmonia (sun sea sky) pushes their sound far forward with a palpable intensity by giving a seemingly subliminal nod to some of the more electronically minded ethereal bands of the mid 80s to early 90s like Breathless, Chapterhouse, My Bloody Valentine or even the more emotionally rich moments of Colourbox. Lights Out Asia who is actually influenced more by a more current crop of like-minded artists such as Mogwai, Massive Attack, and Robin Guthrie's various works, blend them all, the erstwhile and contemporary, with an updated style, feel and modern expansiveness. Tanks and Recognizers is a cinematic and ambitiously crafted album which could easily fit into any indie rock or electronic music collection. Soaring, floating, and moving forward as it pulls you in to its hopeful heart consuming ebb and flow of electronics, guitars and lofty vocal yearning.

My Little Airport
Zoo Is Sad, People Are Cruel (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 12th)
PS, SPAIN MY LITTLE AIRPORT is an indie-pop/electro-noise-pop band from Hong Kong (the second Hong Kong artist in the Elefant Records story, right after THE PANCAKES), formed by P and Nicole, college classmates since 2001, and well known in the Hong Kong area thanks to the big success they had with their debut album. "Zoo is sad, people are cruel", is a fourteen-song album compiling the best moments off their two albums. A sweetest selection that will make you laugh and it will make you sigh, and above all it will fill you with joy. Their lyrics are about relationships and stories between P and his friends and acquaintances. Really, the lyrics are about this. Just check out song titles like "Victor, fly me to Stafford", "You don't wanna be my girlfriend, Phoebe" or "Leo, are you still jumping out of windows in expensive clothes?". Their twee-pop sound shares the naïveté of the Sarah Records bands, the simple chrams of CONFETTI and THE SOFTIES and the unaffected intonations of HEAVENLY's Amelia Fletcher. Sometimes, their sound tends more towards punk-pop à la HELEN LOVE (as in the short pill that is "Gigi Leung is dead"), and they also openly acknowledge their fondness for SLOWDIVE y MOJAVE 3, who might be a big influence on the final track, "Dee, it may all end up tomorrow". But, with a song titled "When I listen to The Field Mice", what else could they be but an indie band?

New Pornographers
Challengers (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 21ST)
PS, US The fourth album is airier, more spacious, and more relaxed than its jackhammer predecessors. In general, Carl Newman's songwriting is slightly more scrutable this time around; his lyrics still ring with wry perception and political metaphor, but they betray some of the magnanimity that comes with new love. The sophisticated, rich production values and complex range of songwriting allow us to extend the group's audience to new groups: AAA radio listeners, fans of Neko Case's solo work, and coffee drinkers in general.

Prefab Sprout
Steve McQueen [re-issue, remastered, expanded] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 10TH)
PS, UK Upon the UK release of Steve McQueen in 1985 frontman Paddy Mcaloon explained "I'm probably the best songwriter on the planet... Seriously...on my day, who are my rivals?" Though assuredly just stirring up the press, the fact is, he was right. It remains one of The Best Pop Albums EVER... This is a 2007 digitally-remastered double-disc expansion of the popular UK band's much loved second album, originally released in 1985. Original producer Thomas Dolby did the remastering Job, ensuring that all the band's original artistic sound and intent remains intact. Include a second disc with eight of the album's 11 tracks in re-arranged acoustic form, beautiful versions that prove the songs' genius, recorded by Paddy in 2006. MOJO: "The ultimate album [of the era]...as sublime as pop can be." UNCUT: "Music steeped in the classics - Lennon & McCartney, Bacharach & David, even pre-rock'n'roll types such as Gershwin - but rich in emotion as well as intelligence." P.S. This album was released in the US under the name 'Two Wheels Good'.

Project Jenny, Project Jan
XOXOXOXOXO (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 14th)
PS, US Even as our hyper-digital age makes the world smaller, the soundscape of American music keeps getting bigger. Genres multiply, divide, revive, and recycle themselves-reinvented as pre-this, post-that, or this-core, and that-hop. So slap a label on Project Jenny, Project Jan if you want but you'll find that label is constantly changing. On XOXOXOXOXO, you'll witness how a young duo from Brooklyn pushes the boundaries of modern music. The band's signature sound-Sammy Rubin's jaunty electro-pop hooks fueled by saucy freestyled vocals from Jeremy Haines-is infectious without being predictable. And on this album, you will hear shades of every genre, from Latin, old school hip-hop, and reggae, to blues, rock, old time rags, and 80s electro. Some songs even brush up charmingly against bluegrass, big band, and swing, resulting in a sound that is fiercely, uniquely their own. So can you call Project Jenny, Project Jan post-indie-pop electro-core? Sure, if you insist on categorizing. The bottom line is that this is smart, energetic dance music for a new generation of listeners-the kind of people who'd rather shake it on the dance floor than puzzle over sub-genres.

Pumice
Pebbles (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 10TH)
PS, US Pumice's rollicking brand of loner DIY - precariously devoid of gratuitous pose - is a colorful, desolate sound world unto itself. Pebbles offer the unlikely marriage of astute refinement & wild abandon, with songs uplifting & sincere, yet dark with oddball substance to spare. Self-recorded, committed to 8 track tape & mastered by Pete Swanson (YELLOW SWANS), resulting in the biggest-sounding record in the Pumice canon. The small silver guitar remains at the fore, only now that signature of the Pumice sound is presented in startling clarity, augmented by Neville's booming drums, piano flourishes & tape manipulations.

Saint Joan
Wrecker's Lantern (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 10TH)
PS, AUSTRALIA Album title alludes to the 19th century practice of luring a ship onto the rocks by faking the beam of a lighthouse with a swinging lantern, causing the ship to run aground, its treasure to be plundered. It continues the bands interest in all things maritime...the sea as the subconscious as Carl Jung would have it. The band takes inspiration from Hieronymus Bosch in "The Four Last Things" and The Tempest in "Singing Bowl". They conjure love & loss, seasick sailors & freight trains, hills & mountains, rivers & fading street lights. Epic, psychedelic stream-of-consciousness psychodramas about loss like 'December' contrast with the more fragmented, melancholy of "Gone" with its looping guitar & lush strings. The wide screen folk-rock drive of "Singing Bowl", place it alongside vintage Walkabouts. Recorded in an old warehouse in the autumn "The Wrecker's Lantern" evokes time & place at every turn and yet seeks to transcend them. It is the sound of beauty, timeless & incarnate.

Santa Dog
Kittyhawk (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 10TH)
PS, JAPAN Santa Dog play sparkly, sassy, summer-soaked pop with chiming guitars and a sinister fringe. Think Blondie going two rounds with the Throwing Muses on the edge of a cliff with a stiff breeze whipping up skirts and mischief and you're still nowhere near capturing the band's distinctive sound and uniquely English charm. This Bristol-based four piece's debut album, Kittyhawk, comes on the heels of their three self-released EPs that captivated audiences and press alike. Santa Dog are 'perfect pop' (Lostmusic), 'more addictive than opium' (Whisperin' & hollerin'), and play 'the kind of classic guitar pop that exists in its own universe, mercifully free of the shackles of hyperbole & trend' (Norman Records). Also look out for the debut single, released in the UK in May on 7" vinyl and digital download through new London indie label, SoundsExperience.

Avant-Dernières Pensées: Selected Piano Works features several of Satie's best known compositions, including the famously poised Trois Gymnopédies, all six haunting Gnossiennes and Je te veux, as well as more experimental pieces such as Descriptions automatiques, Avant-dernières pensées and Sports et divertissements, an extraordinary collection of 21 miniatures from 1914 with illustrations by Charles Martin. Also included is Satie's single-act, neo-Dada lyric comedy Le Piège de Médusa, and comprising 'seven tiny dances for Jonah the Monkey' and illustrated by the Cubist painter Georges Braque. Speal, Shane
Stealing the Fire (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 8TH)
PS, US It could be a modern incarnation of the old blues scenario: A man sits in his single-wide mobile home with a primitive guitar & belts out mean murder ballads & dark spirituals through a rusty harmonica mic. But it's not a "scenario." This is the real shit. Speal was living in the middle of a Pennsylvania trailer park. He plays a cigar box guitar. And he recorded this album on a simple 4-track cassette recorder. "Stealing the Fire" features stark homemade recordings of Speal performing the works of Timothy Renner on a primitive cigar box guitar. It was a simple premis in the beginning. Speal just wanted to know what Renner's dark folk music would sound like if were soaked in Delta blues. Speal covers Renner's work from Stone Breath, Spectral Light & Moonshine Firefly Jamboree & solo recordings.

The album quickly moves into uncharted territory with the atmospheric "The Ghost Of You Lingers" and moves through several different stylistic changes from the explosive "You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb" to the wall-of-sound horns of radio single "The Underdog". Their most heartfelt batch of songs since 2001's "Girls

St. Vincent
Marry Me (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 10TH)
PS, US WOW! St. Vincent is the moniker of singer/multi-instrumentalist/composer Annie Clark and this is her debut full-length. She's opened for such diverse acts as Television, Jose Gonzalez, and Sufjan Stevens, and she's an inventive and versatile guitarist who has also performed with avant-garde composer Glenn Branca. On this record, she writes cinematic pop epics that feel at times like Paris in the 20s before all the fun ended. Or, conversely, an orchestra of pure modernity - a new American music, informed by jazz, gospel blues, Southern folk music, and classical composition but, in the end, an animal original unto itself. She's been compared to everyone from Bjork to Kate Bush to Jeff Buckley, and her beautiful voice melds perfectly with her intricate guitar work.

Steinbecks
Far From The Madding Crowd (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 10TH)
PS, US On Far From the Madding Crowd Steinbecks' songwriters, brothers Josh & Joel Meadows, team up with their cousin Tali White (Lucksmiths, Guild League) to craft one of the first shining pop gems of the post-Candle Melbourne pop scene. The Meadows brothers have been writing and singing songs about things that matter to them for longer than either care to remember, but Far From the Madding Crowd marks the first time the brothers have written and recorded with their cousin.
Two songs on the album - 'The Doppler Effect', a powerful pop punch that dissects the city/country relationship, and the gorgeous 'Have You Ever Looked After a Song?' - are sung and co-written by White. Other stand-outs include opener '1987 + 1994 = 2007', in which the 'becks somehow manage to blend the sensibilities of the Pet Shop Boys with the sensuality of Pavement, and the angsty nature hymn, 'Moon & Stars'. Musically the record has echoes of Nick Drake, Lloyd Cole, My Morning Jacket, The Chills and Big Star. Lyrically, the 'becks tackle questions as diverse as: what happens to modern society when the oil runs out? Why is compromise not a dirty word when you're in love? will we ever learn to learn from the past? And, if you could go back to being a teenager, would you? The world is in a mess, The Steinbecks seem to acknowledge, but faith, hope and love remain. Far From the Madding Crowd exists within this reality and tries to tell the story of it through the only medium The Steinbecks know: the pop song.

Teaneck
Masters of Achievement (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 10TH)
PS, JAPAN California three-piece, Teaneck, flaunt a confident rock sense and eminently hummable pop melodies on Masters of Achivement, their first full-length album. Known for their energetic live performances, Teaneck formed after lead singer, Loren Isaac, was hit by a car and realized the time to rock out was 'now or never.' The fast-charging trio developed an international following through the magic of MySpace, and eventually recorded with the producer of power pop faves, Ozma. The resulting songs fuse past and present, pungent and pleasant, with the taut simplicity that only a three-piece can generate. Skipping along through sunny, country-tinged rock, alt-pop catchiness, and triumphant rock and roll, Masters of Achievement certainly lives up to its title. For fans of Weezer, Fountains of Wayne, and The Foo Fighters. Initial release features limited edition special packaging.

Torske, Bjorn
Feil Knapp (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 10TH)
PS, NORWAY First album in six years! In many ways "Feil Knapp" (Norwegian for wrong button) represents a sound that sits somewhere in between "Trøbbel", 1999's seminal "Nedi Myra" on Ferox and his underground cult hit "Søppelmann" on Svek. With influences ranging everything from Count Ossie & The Residents via 22 Skidoo to Idut Boys, Torske has created his very own & characteristic signature sound, a unique blend of warm & melancholic house, quirky avant-disco, leftfield electronica & dark, heavy psychedelic dub. In other words; this album has everything that we have learnt to love Bjorn for. Weirdly melodic & wonderfully groovy.
