Parasol New Arrivals • May 02, 2006

Hi all,

This week you’ll find fantastic new releases from Black Ox Orkestar, Hood/Themselves, Pan American, Backyard Babies, Black Keys, Margot & The Nuclear So And So's, Black Heart Procession, Massive Attack, and more. Also, our good friend Todd Bell mailed us a video link of an amazing band called Dragonforce. Plenty of hair and over-the-top wicked dueling guitar solos to last a lifetime. My neck hurts.

That's all I have to say about that,

Royal/Paul

Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week
Motorpsycho - Black Hole/Blank Canvas DCD $18.28 15% off (Stickman)
Special sale pricing for one week! Check out sound samples on our front page. Notorious Norwegian psych-pop-prog-rock juggernaut's new double-album remains a favorite here at Parasol HQ! Since Motorpsycho’s last official album 'It’s Love Cult' (2002) our beloved trio shrank to a duo with the departure of their longtime drummer, Hakon Gebhardt. The remaining members, guitarist Hans Magnus “Snah” Ryan and bassist Bent Saether, forge onwards, both continuing to share vocal duties and Bent proving to be an extremely accomplished drummer/percussionist. Not surprisingly, the magick of Motorpsycho prevails. 'Black Hole/Blank Canvas' harkens back to the band’s early monumental guitar-rock manifestation, without sacrificing their affection for sixties-styled Beach Boys harmonies, the seventies' Cosmic Americana and jam band action. With two discs there’s a little bit of everything, and possibly more than one kitchen sink. MOJO Magazine said: “Their yearly waxings still manage to encapsulate their dazzling spectrum of psych rock sound: West Coast pop, Sonic Youth, post-Rubber Soul Beatles, Blue Afternoon-era Tim Buckley, all ages of Floyd. While there’s plenty of history here, it’s always re-envisaged by fresh eyes… Motorpsycho have got the musical chops, they’ve got a brilliant, bizarre way with songcraft (think Super Furries), all they require is your attention.”
Jim's Pick: Best New Music from Scandinavia
Johnossi - Self-Titled CD $11.48 15% off (V2 Scandinavia)
Check out full-song sound samples on our front page. Monumental garagerock from Swedish duo Johnossi. John sings in a Jeff Buckley-esque range and plays acoustic guitar through half-a-dozen effects pedals and several large amplifiers, while brother-in-arms Ossi provides Bonham-esque drums. Listen to tracks from their swaggering self-titled debut and you’ll know why I’m putting this album in my Top 3 for 2006, right between The Fine Arts Showcase and Hell On Wheels… Click here to check out Jim's new and improved Scandinavian music page, updated every other day or so. Plenty of sound samples and a bit more detail than you get in the regular update.

Agoraphobic Nosebleed
PCP Torpedo
PS, US Originally released in the final year of the 20th century in the unconventional 6'' vinyl format, it's finally reissued on CD-in the equally unconventional 3'' CD format. The hideously deformed & many-fanged suckling of guitarist/machinist SCOTT HULL (PIG DESTROYER) & vocalist/programmer J. RANDALL (ex- ISIS), they specialize in stereophonic slaughter & extreme pharmacological distress, the combination of which is commonly referred to as "hyper-grind". Disc 2 is a remix CD feat. Auer, Jon
Songs from the Year of Our Demise
PS, US Best known as songwriter/guitarist/vocalist for the POSIES & member of BIG STAR. First solo full-length of original material. The record is at turns more gritty & more lush, more atmospheric & more immediate, more universal & more personal than anything he's done in the past. It reflects the highs & lows of both a soaring exuberance & a crushing fatalism. Keyboards, cellos, organs, chimes & gizmos come 7 go while Jon's signature guitar work & angelic voice consistently echo the emotional turmoil of the past half decade.

Baker, Keef
Pure Language
PS, GERMANY Following two CDs on n5md, UK's multitalented Keef Baker offers on Ad Noiseam a solid 6-track MCD in which his music takes a resolute acoustic and organic turn. Warm voices flow through "Pure Language" on top of a very distinctive bass and a new found drum'n'bass twist. Keef Baker enriches this vocabulary with a playful use of tempo changes and contained noise, writing down a music both human and massive, full of emotion and yet assertive. "Pure Language" is neither a whisper nor a shout, but a thoughtful and laid statement, to be listen to with care and enjoyed with ears wide opened.

Codec & Flexor
Killermachine
Ps, US 2nd full-length release from Cologne-based techno duo Sven Zalac & Matthias Freund. They've been ranked among the absolute outsiders & infant terribles of the dark electronic/new wave-pop underground for a long time now. Replete with tech-y beats, dirty guitar riffs crowned with spherical vocals & superior hooks. They take a more pop-like line, though strictly continuing their merging of indie rock & dark techno/electro.

Dead Machines
Dead End on Olson St.
PS, US VINYL ONLY. Moldy Michigan basements and unwritten horror movies alike know and love the Dead Machines. This megalithic noisemaker is the work of John Olson (Wolf Eyes, American Tapes) and Tovah Olson (Wooden Wand & The Vanishing Voice) and "Dead End On Olson St." is a new chapter in this prolific couple's body of work. Dead Machines rely less on bombast and clenched-fist and dig deeper into sound and the space between sounds for their sonic de-evolvings. This record has one long peice per side, clicking like a stopped rotor over tape loops, bizarre horns, fucked up delay units and homemade electronics. Beautifully paced and possibly sweet as it is terrifying. Cover art by John Olson is a full-color collage of some flesh-eating types, and the pressing was done entirely on white vinyl.

Here the trio raises the bar once again with their exceptional playing & unwavering dedication to forward-thinking song craft. Time signatures bend & shift intuitively. Rich washes of melody & layers of noise are the voices that punctuate crisp musical constructions. Engineered by Martin Bisi (SONIC YOUTH, DRESDEN DOLLS, SWANS, HELMET, BRIAN ENO).

Joined by an enemble (sharing members w/ANTONY & THE JOHNSONS, ELYSIAN FIELDS, VANITY SET) on cello, violin, guitar, baritone sax, bass, sparse drums & heavenly vocal harmonies. Music of a vague & fevered futureland, one of glowing birdcages & other lost items. "Haunting, romantic songs...an ensemble of remarkably talented artists."-Flavorpill. We say HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Hegre, John & Maja Ratkje
Ballads
PS, GERMANY Ballads is the first collaborative album by two key figures of the Norwegian noise, improv, experimental, whatever-you-call-it music scene. Anyone expecting a rackety wall of distorted feedback guitars and voices will be gently surprised though by the sparse and intimate sketches to be found on this wonderful record. Songs are stripped down to their raw bones using only the most essential elements to reveal the soul behind every single sound. Superfluous effects seem to be completely absent, creating an open space for miniscule details, always ready to implode into noisier tracks such as "Private Matter". The album culminates in "Hammock Moods", a quietly mesmerizing epic finale with Maja Ratkje humming a beautiful melody over Hegre's gorgeous near-psychedelic guitar playing. Let's all hope for a sequel to this album! Maja Ratkje is a member of Spunk (Rune Grammofon) and noise duo Fe-Mail. Her solo album "Voice" (produced in collaboration with Jazzkammer) got an Award of Distinction at Prix Ars Electronica in 2003. In 2001 she was the first composer ever to receive the Arne Nordheim distinction award. She has collaborated with Jaap Blonk, Ikue Mori, Otomo Yoshihide, Wolf Eyes, Matmos, Lasse Marhaug, Jason Forrest, Kim Hiortoy, Ulver and many others. John Hegre is a member of Jazzkammer / Jazkamer (Smalltown Supersound), Kaptein Kaliber, Golden Serenades, New Boiling Near The Fjords (with members of Alog) and others. His first solo 3"CD came out on Dekorder in 2003. Jazkamer will release their aptly titled new album "Metal Music Machine" in spring 2006 and Hegre is working on an as yet untitled solo album for Dekorder. Frans de Waard in Vital Weekly 519: "Yeah, right, a album of ballads by these two renowned noise artists? This is noise with the big N, and this is the future of noise music. Excellent!"

PS, US Overlooked 1998 solo debut from TALK TALK frontman & majority genius behind the LP that launched a thousand post-rock bands, Talk Talk's "Laughinstock." Like that touchstone, this album is stripped down for maximum emotional impact, utilizing the signature sound of mixing acoustic guitar w/vocal harmonies & piano to illustrate his uncanny ability to master an atmosphere. Minimalist beauty.

Johnossi
S/T
PS, SWEDEN Jim's Pick: Truly astounding rock-folk-pop duo's debut album recently re-released in Scandinavia with three bonus tracks. John sings and plays acoustic guitar through effects pedals and several overdriven amplifiers and Ossi (Oskar) plays the drums and sings backup. Although on paper it might not appear so spectacular, it is. Very loud and frantically fantastic. Huge songs and a dramatic Jeff Buckley-esque vocal range... What you get is triumphant rough-edged rocksongs and cathedral-sized balladry that truly recalls the primal furor and sultry sweetness of The Gun Club at their most anthemic...something about that ringing hollowbody guitar sound and that wild wild west feeling. Other names being dropped are as diverse as The Soundtrack of Our Lives, Wilco, Jeff Buckley, and The Darkness, which hardly makes sense, but still...

Margot & The Nuclear So And So's
Dust of Retreat [re-issue]
PS, US All Music Guide REVIEW: "Margot & The Nuclear So-&-Sos have created an album that both the casual music fan and music perfectionist will enjoy. The Dust of Retreat is a cinematic chamber pop songbook of what was once and what might have been. Singer/songwriter Richard Edwards, only in his early twenties when he composed these mini-epics, is quite fond of New York. Mesmerized by the Greenwich Village art scene of the 1960s and curious about how people lived during that time, he uses this interest as the inspiration behind The Dust of Retreat. Whether that is through film, poetry, or music, the notion that another world exists within those realms holds a romantic kind of quality. That kind of thing is nearly unimaginable unless you lived through it; however, Margot & the Nuclear So and So's build upon some of those castles in the sky. It takes a band of eight to realize this vision, as a lush assortment of strings, brass, percussion, and guitars keeps The Dust of Retreat at a steady pace, regardless of the mood and tone of each song. Edwards is like a less anxious Conor Oberst on the more melodic, folky tracks such as "On a Freezing Chicago Street" and "Skeleton Key." Hints of melancholy waltz along on the acoustically painted "A Light on a Hill" and "Jen Is Bringin the Drugs," but it's the orchestrated pop moments where The Dust of Retreat really takes shape. Just when you think Edwards' voice is going to break, he gains control again, particularly on the album's standout track, "Quiet as a Mouse." Edwards' soaring vocal keeps hope alive in the midst of sorting out self-discovery: "When I awoke/I was alive in somebody's room/I felt life and love and hope infesting my bones/Wake up, you've got a lot of things to do/Wake up, the sun is rising without you." You want to believe him. What The Dust of Retreat does for indie rock in 2006 is almost everything Neutral Milk Hotel wanted to do in 1998 with In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. Just give it a chance." Motorpsycho
Black Hole/Blank Canvas [2CD]
PS, GERMANY Notorious Norwegian psych-pop-prog-rock juggernaut's new album is finally here! Since Motorpsycho's last official album 'It's Love Cult' (2002) our beloved trio shrank to a duo with the departure of their longtime drummer, Hakon Gebhardt. The remaining members, guitarist Hans Magnus "Snah" Ryan and bassist Bent Saether, forge forever onwards, both continuing to share vocal duties and Bent proving to be an extremely accomplished drummer/percussionist. Not surprisingly, the magick of Motorpsycho prevails. 'Black Hole/Blank Canvas' harkens back to the band's early monumental guitar-rock manifestations and the majestic rock of multiple early nineties scenes (think Swervedriver) are well represented here, without sacrificing their affection for sixties-styled Beach Boys harmonies, the seventies' Cosmic Americana and jam band action, and the eighties' Paisley Underground. With two discs there's a little bit of everything, and possibly more than one kitchen sink. MOJO Magazine "Their yearly waxings still manage to encapsulate their dazzling spectrum of psych rock sound: West Coast pop, Sonic Youth, post-Rubber Soul Beatles, Blue Afternoon-era Tim Buckley, all ages of Floyd. While there's plenty of history here, it's always re-envisaged by fresh eyes... Motorpsycho have got the musical chops, they've got a brilliant, bizarre way with songcraft (think Super Furries), all they require is your attention."

Nectarine No. 9, The
It's Just The Way Things Are Joe, It's Just The Way Things Are
PS, UK Reissue. A compilation of works from their first 3 albums, recorded for legendary Scottish labels Postcard & Creeping Bent. A Sea With Three Stars: Postcard (1993) Saint Jack: Postcard (1995) Fried For Blue Material: Creeping Bent (1998) These three albums have long been deleted, so it was felt that Creeping Bent's "It's Just The Way Things Are Joe..." primer should resurface these post-post punk nuggets. The 7th of May, 1977: This is the date when everything changed forever, as the Clash's "White Riot" tour hit Edinburgh. However, it wasn't the Clash that connected with a bunch of teenage punks in the audience who would go on to form the fulcrum of "the sound of young Scotland", it was Vic Godard & the Subway Sect. Their ramshackle grey-glare/treble-to-the-max guitar sound was THE major influence on Postcard Record's "Orange Juice" & "Josef K", and Fast Product's "Fire Engines". The Fire Engines leader, DAVY HENDERSON, has actively carried the torch for Vic, with Godard continuing to make his influence felt on Henderson's work with THE NECTARINE No.9 over the past 10 years.

Nilsson, Harry
Son of Schmilsson
PS, US Emboldened by the huge success of "Nilsson Schmilsson," HN was ready to let it all go when it came time to record the follow-up. While working from a familiar, melodic pop/rock base, he created a record that covered a spectrum of ideas, sound effects & oddities. There are song parodies, hard rock songs, love songs & even a cheerful singalong w/retirees at an old folks home. PETER FRAMPTON & RINGO STARR are among the many musicians who performed. At its heart is a fanastic set of songs that illustrate what a skilled, versatile songsmith he was. REMASTERED w/4 bonus tracks, 3 previously unreleased..

Pan American
For Waiting, For Chasing
PS, US (ala LABRADFORD) From a technical point of view the album is a sensitive combination of the electronic domain (synthesizers, computer) & acoustic instruments (guitars, percussion, flugelhorn), with the latter involving friends & musicians like Steven Hess (percussion) & David Max Crawford (Flugelhorn). Filaments of percussive elements condense to polyrhythmic elements, layers of sound, instruments & field recordings merge to build up a mystic parallel, not so much fictional, world. There is a very personal trace throughout the album.

Radio Dept.
Pet Grief
PS, SWEDEN "Pet grief" is a completely different album than the debut "Lesser Matters". You'll hear from the very first chord that you're listening to The Radio Dept. The mood is darker, more epic, grander and even more beautiful than ever. "Pet grief" is the best songs Pet Shop Boys never wrote and the album you'd hoped. My Bloody Valentine did after "Loveless". The key to what makes it so special, what makes it all sound so much like The Radio Dept. might be the ever present melancholy that permeate everything they write. It's been three years since the debut album "Lesser matters" was released (two since it was released by XL in the UK) and even if the band has released two Eps, "Pulling our weight" (2003) and "This past week" (2005) since that "Pet grief" is definitely the most anticipated Swedish album in a very, very long time.

Vega, Alan & Revolutionary Corps Of Teenage Jesus
Righteous Lite
PS, UK Reissue. Vega came to prominence with Mercer Arts savants, the legendary Suicide. For many, the debut Suicide album is one of the touchstone recordings of the 1970's, and still sounds harrowing to this day.RIGHTEOUS LITE sees Vega reconvene with former Altered Image and Black Grape producer Stephen Lironi. Vega & Lironi first worked together on a 12" techno remix of the Suicide classic, "Frankie Teardrop", which went on to become a NME Single of the Week when that accolade actually meant something in sales terms.Righteous Lite is the sound of urban paranoic New York blues that is Vega's forte, and is positively harrowing. It follows on from the recent "Daddy Died - A Brooklyn Nightmare" maxi-EP, which featured remixes by Vega devotees such as Mongoose, Future Pilot AKA, Fire Engines / The Nectarine No9's Davy Henderson (t/a The Measurement of Souls), SSD, etc.

PS, US (Pronounced "dis-lec-six"). French disco punk featuring the original drummer of Daft Punk. This is a repressing of their debut 7-inch that was originally released by the band. The awesome lead vocals call to mind Eve Libertine of Crass. Emi (vocalist) emits such passion and conviction that it's hard to turn away. The music recalls fellow Crass label mates Dirt mixed with the rhythmic collisions of Essential Logic. Anoice
Remmings (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, UK Let's get this straight immediately. Anoice is not another instumental group with strong rock tendencies and an armchair association with classical music. Unlike numerous contemporaries which they will undoubtedly be compared to, their goal is not to follow the trends and make the soft/loud/soft/loud juxtapositions in every song, but to carefully craft each song with a strong attention to melody, solid accompaniment, and courteous counterpoint. One of the remarkable qualities of Anoice is that they truly work as a group, with members who aren't afraid to remain quiet while others play. Through meticulous composition Anoice has achieved an unrivaled quality. While the band isn't intentionally attempting to be cinematic, the recordings achieve something breathtaking and emotive: imagine the Rachel's scoring a film by Ang Lee. Anoice's music is anthemic and rich while being introspective and personal. Each track is preceeded by brief and dense ambient tracks to clense the audio palate much like ginger in your sushi boat. Anoice are a six-piece group based in Tokyo. The band was formed in January, 2004 by members Ricco (guitar/keyboards) and Taku (guitars and mandolin), who were soon joined by Yuki (piano), Utaka (viola), Matsu (bass), and Yossy (drums). While each member cites different musical influences, it's fairly evenly split between rock (think My Bloody Valentine meets King Crimson), classical and modern composers (Perhaps Debussy and Shostakovitch writing together after drinking heavily from Phillip Glass), jazz and electronic ( Autechre meets Mum maybe?). Combining all of these influences with their obvious Japanese heritage Anoice has created an album with an emotional arc, climaxing magnificently as it ends and leaves the listener determined to press play once again. Pronounced "a noyce," the name comes from the Celtic word for "now" (Anois). Remmings is their debut release and contains four named songs and five unnamed songs. Cover art by Non Format. Mastering by Jeff Lipton (Flaming Lips, Magnetic Fields) "Anoice have produced something entirely different and original, a mature record of great beauty and attention to detail that rises above any clichés and should by all accounts establish them as one of the leading artists today." Battiato, Franco
Pollution (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, US Franco Battiato's wonderfully lively 1973 concept album Pollution is an audaciously psychedelic album drawn from the space rock dimension with good portions of electronics and keyboard layers. Drawing heavily on the VCS3 synthesizer, Battiato and company (besides himself, three backing band members play synth as well) give Pollution an extreme electronic edge. With comparisons to Ash Ra Tempel, Faust, and Pink Floyd, Pollution was declared "genius" by Frank Zappa. Extremely influential on the '90s Chicago post-rock mafia. Original artwork. Bear Quartet, The
Eternity Now (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, SWEDEN New album from one of the world's best pop bands. "Eternity now" will be released on the 24th of May in Sweden, likely a day earlier here at Parasol. It has only been eight months since their last release "Saturday Night" and like that album, this is an album that has an electronic touch with really nice harmonies and a twist of Black Sabbath. The first single will be "The Repairing of the Red Sea". The band says: "It was recorded at Dubios at Odenplan, Stockholm, Sweden with Chrille Roth, just as "Saturday Night". Eleven songs, of which two are skits, you know like it (used to be) on hip hop records. It's heavily electronic and sometimes heavy metal. Not purely though. It's not "genre music" in that way, but it distinguishes itself from the latest album, which sort of fell between two chairs; we tried to fit songs into a form that we didn't really master at the time. This time we only rehearsed for 45 minutes and more or less wrote the songs in the studio. It feels way better. The album's a bit monotonous (in a good, minimalistic way) and it's much more melodic than we thought it would be. About half of it, if you count the minutes, is intrumental and we have a spectacular guest on one of the songs. Can't say who it is yet though."

Beirut
Gulag Orkestar (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 9TH)
PS, US While sounding like the work of an entire Balkan gypsy orchestra playing modern songs as mournful ballads & upbeat marches, is actually the work of 19 year old Albuquerque native Zack Condon w/an assist from Jeremy Barnes (NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL & HAWK & A HACKSAW). There are no guitars on this album; instead, horns, violins, cellos, ukuleles, mandolins, glockenspiel, drums, tambourines, congas, organs, pianos, clarinets and accordions all build and break around Condon's deep-voiced crooner vocals, swaying to the Eastern European beats like a drunken twelve-member carnival band.

I Am The Cosmos (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 1ST)
PS, US Big Star guitarist Chris Bell was one of the unsung heroes of American pop music; despite a life marked by tragedy and a career crippled by commercial indifference, the singer/songwriter's slim body of recorded work proved massively influential on the generations of indie rockers who emerged in his wake. Bitcrush
In Distance (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 15TH)
PS, US "In Distance," Bitcrush's latest offering and first on n5MD, finds Ex-Gridlock beat-smith Mike Cadoo pushing n5MD further into a world where two disparate yet emotional elements, human and electronic, are merged into one. Recorded over a one year span, In Distance is "very personal," by the artist's admission. Cadoo has laid himself bare in an introspective ride where shimmering shoe-gaze-centric guitars, broken electronics, dual bass work, live drums, and Mike's now trademark "the one left behind" vocal style meld together into long aural road-trips ending at dusk in the middle of nowhere. A trip you will be more than happy to take considering who is driving. Vast and heartfelt; engaging yet adrift, In Distance has as much in common with his debut "Enarc" (Component) and the "Shimmer & Fade" EP (Enpeg) as it does with the more recent output of Mogwai, Album Leaf or even Fourtet. In Distance leads us there, now how do we get home...for fans of: mogwai, fourtet, ulrich schauss, dryft.

Black Heart Procession
Spell, The (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 9TH)
PS, US "The Spell" is the most fitting name yet for a Black Heart Procession record. Spells are cast over a person, a love affair, a nation, a world; they enchant and entrap, disorient and delude. They're the heart of this release, and there's no better word to describe the spooky intoxication of the band's sound. Theirs is the sound of driving at night across the West. Like the wide-open landscape, this is music that knows how to be both desolate and lush. Here, a song's 6/8 beat will pull you into a moody seductive waltz and next, the violin and piano evoke the house band of a lonesome cabaret with the lights turned low. Then the strings stop their mournful crying and shift into a propulsive thrum, and now we've got the pedal to the metal and we're heading straight down the open road into a cinematic twilight.

Black Time
Midnight World (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 9TH)
PS, US The point is talent over ability, ideas over proficiency, energy over competence-action, time, and vision. Add some musical instruments to this confusion and the resulting mess is "Black Time" -shambolic but passionate, hollerin' and wailin' at the dying of the red light. If you pay attention to zines, blogs and websites dedicated to sub-underground rock, then no doubt you are aware that Black Time have been getting favorably compared to Crime, Pussy Galore, The Electric Eels, The Cramps and The Fall. A string of hopelessly limited edition vinyl 7"s and 12"s have stoked the fire. The hype is justified in this case, as Midnight World is the perfect marriage of chug-a-lug, primeval drumming, opaque layers of guitars, new wave cinema references, '60s and '70s punk, lo-fi static and overwrought vocals from frontman Lemmy Caution. The best UK export since The Country Teasers.

Boris
Pink (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 16TH)
PS, US These new recordings effectively combine all the strongest elements of what they are capable of into one solid, complete, concise album. It's mega-drone, balls- out punk rock, extreme dark psychedelia & 70s' fuzzed out acid rock. The clincher is an infusion of ultra-catchy melodicism into their already heavy foundation. There's infectious vocal melodies that combined with intelligent song-writing create a solidified, undeniable union. It comes with a die-cut cover that when opened reveals 3 perforated acid-tab cards.

Boyracer
Punker Than You Since '92 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 16TH)
PS, US DOUBLE 'BEST OF' 75 SONG RETROSPECTIVE. Since the early 1990s Boyracer have existed around the singular pop visions of Stewart Anderson. Armed with a selection of fuzzboxes and a carefree revolving door line up, Boyracer have been carefully crafting their buzzsaw assault, shaving seconds off frantic slithers of adrenaline punk-pop. Noted recordings on numerous indie-cred labels such as Sarah Records and Slumberland, and brutally honest sweaty live performances have cemented Boyracer's place in global indiedom as influential stalwarts of the genre. This double disc set, on the band's own 555 Recordings label, features 75 selections from their exhaustive back catalogue. The tracks chosen (by Stewart) span the band's global history from Leeds, UK to Flagstaff, Arizona, via stints in Japan and Australia. Forever embracing the DIY ethic to excess, Boyracer are known for their completists nightmare of a back catalogue, (with nearly 500 songs on commercially available releases to date). "Punker Than You Since '92" includes much of the band's best known and strongest material coupled with long out of print tracks, (including the impossible to find debut 7" unavailable anywhere since it's release in 1992). There are tracks from strictly limited releases too, such as 2005's lathe cut 10" LP (which was a pressing of 75 copies worldwide). The compilation is a welcome round-up for diehards, a chance to fill in some gaps for the casual observer, and is also a perfect introduction for the new and curious to one of indiepop's longest standing and respected bands.
