Aloof Proof
Piano Text [re-issue]
PS, US Re-issue of an mid-90s ambient classic. "There is no ambient
record greater than Aloof Proof's Piano Text. It is the kind of album
that becomes essential after just the first listen. Since it was quietly
released in 1994 -- a time, remember, dominated by the ambient techno
boom of such artists as the Orb and Future Sound of London -- it has
achieved a kind of cult status among fans of the genre. This is largely
due to the edited versions of the album's two tracks that appeared
on Asphodel's sprawling drone compilations, opening the world of Aloof
Proof to thousands of eager listeners in the mid-'90s... This is an
album that must be listened to -- no words can adequately describe
how spellbinding the music is, how staggeringly elegant it is."

Barjed, Mattias & Various Artists
Upp Till Kamp [OST]
PS, SWEDEN Jim's Favorite Album of the Year 2007! The vintage-rock
soundtrack to a cool new Swedish TV miniseries (about twenty-something
rockers in early-70s Gothenburg) as created by Mattias Barjed, guitarist
for The Soundtrack of Our Lives. I'll be interested to see how the
songs and scores are used in the miniseries, but spread across two
CDs it's like a freakin' Rock Opera, featuring a little bit of everything:
Bjorn Olsson-esque acoustic and electric instrumental interludes,
gritty organ-fueled garage-rock, some mesmerizing live stuff... So
totally of-the-era, but I guess that is not surprising! Includes contributions
from several of Barjed's TSOOL mates, including frontman Ebbot Lundberg;
a brand new song from The Tallest Man On Earth; plus guest appearances
by Elope's Sebastian Aronsson and Anders Person, Hipwhips' Markus
Lindmark, The Frustration's Jan Martens, Mustasch's Ralf Gyllenhammar
and series actors/stars Sverrir Gudnasson and Fanny Risberg, among
others! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Berry, Shane
The Scrawlys EP
PS, GERMANY Shane Berry was born in South Africa and presently lives
in Japan's capital, Tokyo. There he creates his tracks, all of which
go directly from the ears to the legs. He released an EP on Trapez
and tracks on the New York label Synewave. His songs are played and
charted by numerous DJs, and colleagues such as Richie Hawtin and
Dominik Eulberg hold Berry's work in high esteem. The new EP on Glückskind
might also please them. Again Shane takes two bass lines and twists
the sounds for several minutes through an electronic meat grinder.
Over the kick, it pulsates and holds it all together perfectly. 'Scrawlys'
is refined, reduced minimal techno. 'Deep Space' goes a bit deeper,
techno-wise. Indeed, there is also a dominating bass loop, but the
insertion of reverb and delay leaves the track with far more room
to breathe.

Bethell, Craig
A Day Full of You, A Night Tired of Me
PS, UK Debut album by ex-Locust vocalist Craig Bethell. The album
displays a plaintive songwriting style that unashamedly croons its
way through a set of eleven varied songs influenced as much by avant-pop
baritones Scott Walker and David Sylvian as it is by a troubled and
melancholic Chet Baker. Mark Van Hoen (Locust, Mojave 3, Sing Sing)
lends production duties and evokes an atmosphere of Low-era Bowie,
employs a careful use of Rhodes piano & subtle strings), as well
as vintage synthesizer, distant harp motifs and brushed drums.

Blessing, Lynn
Sunset Painter
PS, UK Shortly before he appeared on the landmark Advancement LP in
1969, vibraphone virtuoso Lynn Blessing released this, his only solo
album. A superb fusion of jazz and laid-back psychedelia, it features
musicians such as Sneaky Pete Kleinow (Flying Burrito Bros., John
Lennon, Frank Zappa) and Wolfgang Melz (The Association, Gabor Szabo)
and was produced by legendary jazz flautist Paul Horn (Miles Davis,
Donovan). Including a handful of mellow originals alongside unorthodox
covers of songs by The Beatles, The Byrds, The Who, Bob Dylan and
Judee Sill, it's a laid-back delight from start to finish. As Blessing
says at the outset: "sit back, relax, and take off your shoes..."

Brannon, Norman
The Anti-Matter Anthology: A 1990s Post-Punk & Hardcore Reader
PS, US While much ink has been spilled over 1980s punk and hardcore
mythology, very little has been done to document the era that followed.
Indeed, it's a glaring omission. In the 1990s, punk rock entered its
adolescent stage and began reevaluating its own music, politics, and
traditions. And before long, the result of this collective soul-searching
became clear: If hardcore wanted to remain relevant in the new decade,
it was going to have to rebel against itself. "The Anti-Matter
Anthology" is perhaps the first published book dedicated to this
transition.

Butcher The Bear
Get Away b/w Leave This Town
PS, UK Butcher The Bar is the 22 year-old Joel Nicholson, who currently
resides in the north of England with his acoustic guitar and a couple
of instruments such as a banjo, a melodica and an accordion. "Get
Away" is a melancholy goodbye to a town, a disillusioned memory
of a city that fades away while still living in it. "Leave Town"
is as minimal and as maximal as a pop song could be: a guitar, a banjo
and a warm voice.

Catanzarite, Stephen
U2's Achtung Baby (33 1/3 Paperback Book)
PS, US Stephen Catanzarite takes a close look at what many consider
to be U2's most fully formed album through the prisms of politics,
spirituality, and culture, illuminating its previously unexplored
depths.
Description:
Stephen Catanzarite takes a close look at what many consider to be
U2's most fully formed album through the prisms of religion, politics,
spirituality, and culture, illuminating its previously unexplored
depths, arguing that it's a concept album about love and the fall
of man.
Authors: Stephen Catanzarite is the managing
director of the Lincoln Park Performing Arts Centre, just outside
of Pittsburgh. He has created a course tracing the history and development
of American popular music from Tin Pan Alley to today - which will
be delivered, online, to thousands of high school students across
the U.S.
Reviews: Stephen Catanzarite takes his readers
on a metaphysical trip with Achtung Baby...The book reads like a well-written
thesis, and Catanzarite is knowledgeable both musically and theologically.
The songs are the bones on which the author fleshes out his theories,
with the help of quotes by philosophers, poets, musicians (Axl Rose,
of all people), and whole passages taken from books by religious scholars
of different faiths. There are references to Neil Young, Led Zeppelin
(the Tower of Babel is the original stairway to heaven), Bob Dylan
and Morrissey for the rock cognoscenti, as well as a few Chinese proverbs
thrown in for good measure." -@U2

Alone: The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo
PS, US Weezer dude's home-recordings, recorded unaccompanied, unaided,
single-handedly, all by himself, without help, in seclusion, isolated.
A collection of his favorite demos from the past fifteen years. PITCHFORK:
"Somewhere along the way, someone told Rivers Cuomo that he needed
to rein it in. To the world's dismay, he listened, and made three
records of faceless, predictable approximations of what the public
supposedly wanted his band Weezer to be. Demo collection Alone does
the opposite, collecting all sorts of goofy and indulgent ideas--
robot voices, barbershop-quartet harmonies, over-emoting, an Ice Cube
cover-- reminding us why we fell for dorks with horn-rimmed glasses
and flying-V guitars in the first place."

Durutti Column, The
Fidelity
PS, UK LTM is proud to announce the release of four expanded CDs by
The Durutti Column, the legendary Factory Records ensemble formed
and fronted by virtuoso guitarist/composer Vini Reilly. Fidelity was
originally released by Les Disques du Crepuscule in April 1996, and
features ten tracks written and performed by Vini Reilly, with occasional
guest vocals by Elli Rudge. In addition to Vini's trademark guitar
style, the album also features sleek programmed beats and synth textures.
The expanded Fidelity CD also features one bonus track, My Only Love,
originally issued in 1995 on a free CD with a guitar magazine. The
attractive booklet for this digitally remaster includes background
notes, and the text of the original press release. Artist biography:
Manchester native Vini Reilly formed The Durutti Column in 1978, recording
his debut album The Return of the Durutti Column the following year
with producer Martin Hannett, a set of delicate instrumental tracks
housed in an abrasive sandpaper sleeve. Subsequent landmark albums
include LC (1981), Without Mercy (1984), The Guitar & Other Machines
(1987), Sex & Death (1993), Fidelity (1996) and Someone Else's
Party (2003). A prolific recording artist in his own right (usually

Friska Viljor
Bravo!
PS, SWEDEN Debut album recorded by two drunk, lovelorn Swedish lads.
Though sung in English throughout these songs are so very very Swedish.
Comparisons include the legendary Bob Hund and their alter ego Bergman
Rock, The Libertines and Beruit, and when I say that this could be
a collection of unheard Shout Out Louds singles & b-sides I mean
that as a very good thing. LONDON TIMES: "Friska Viljor's songs
are heart-on-sleeve, declamatory and impossible to dislike. Bravo
indeed." CONTACT MUSIC: "There may be only so much heartache
that can be mined in any band's lifecycle, but while it's here, it
should be welcomed. Bravo is like some Libertines/ Kaiser Chiefs cross,
so full is it of anthemic indie pop, like fellow Swedes the Shout
Out Louds (or the Danish Figurines). The sound of lost love is written
through the songs, but it is not a depressing place to be - the sound
of defiance comes through the lyrics, while the music, that throws
in ukelele, accordion, trumpet and flugelhorn on top of the guitars
and drums, like some rockier Beirut, is energetic and propulsive.
Who knows if there could be a second album with the same spit and
polish, but who cares? Bravo is a fantastic first album."

Illiad, The
A Sad Day On Pluto
PS, GERMANY The Illiad is a young quintet from Ohio. A creatively
produced demo put World In Sound's attention to the band leader Kyle
Pittman, an introverted and deeply emotional singer and guitarist.
A Sad Day On Pluto was recorded in Cleveland, Ohio in 2007 and contains
13 original tunes reflecting a tasty spectrum between early Pink Floyd
jamming, '60s garage/flower-power and loner folk style, and features
very catchy lyrics combined with interesting 'psychedelicate' melodies.
Pittman's music captures a unique style of composing fresh music with
the influences of Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd, West Coast Pop Art Experimental
Band, The Velvet Underground, Marc Bolan and David Bowie. The mixing,
mostly done by Pittman himself is truly a 'trip in time' -- a 'stereo-experimental'
'60s style like Pink Floyd's Piper at the Gates of Dawn! The song
'Are You A Librarian' can be heard on Trip In Time Vol.2 (Psychedelic
Rock Reflections). With expressive vocals, screeching guitar hooks
and sunny Farfisa sounds in these electric tunes and classic ballads,
The Illiad create the beginning of a fantastic voyage into a concrete
vision of dreamy songs.

Kazumasa, Hashimoto
Euphoriam
PS, JAPAN Noble, the label that brings "music for everyday life"
will top off 2007 with the new album "Euphorium" by the
magical alchemist of sound, Kazumasa Hashimoto. This will be the first
album since Hashimoto's previous album released 1 year and 9 months
ago. With a delicate combination of academic musical theory and unrivaled
creativity, Kazumasa Hashimoto has been applauded all over the world
for the deep and warm music like a "blissful honeymoon between
classic and electronic music." The newest album "tiny people
singing over the rainbow", by label mate Gutevolk and produced
by Hashimoto is also a piece of work that is showered with the magical
talent of the artist. Hashimoto also enchanted the crowd from around
the world in June in Barcelona at Europe's largest electronic music
and multi-media art festival, the sonar festival. In the new album
titled "Euphorium", Hashimoto plays and produces most of
the instruments in the album from the piano, guitar, bass to drums
accompanied by several guest artists playing violin and cello. The
new album features more vocal tracks including M-5, featuring Gutevolk.
The pop melodies and the elegant and sophisticated arrangement of
the tracks create a beautiful and breathtaking harmony that blend
magically to create a kaleidoscope of sound. A sorcery of sound will
lure listeners into a world of dreams. The newest album "Euphorium"
skillfully portrays undeniable happiness and the shadows that lurk
behind that paradise to prove that artist Kazumasa Hashimoto, has
stepped beyond borders of electronica and soft rock to create a new
universal monument of pop music that is new yet nostalgic at the same
time.

Morita, Takuya
Woman and Shadow
PS, GERMANY Tokyo-based Takuya Morita is one of the most promising
young Japanese artists in the minimal techno scene. After releases
on the Morr Music and CYMK labels, he is now debuting on Adjunct with
his most uncompromising and powerful dance music to date. A single
string pattern opens up 'Woman and Shadow,' its hypnotic summon is
soon answered by syncopated bleepy patterns and staccato synth. Dark
vocal samples permeate the scene, the bass warbles the floorboards,
the cavalcade of rhythms soon turns its march into a gallop, a maddened
late night ride of Takuya's wild stallions. Jeremy P. Caulfield catapults
the original's sound particles into space and conducts their fall
into a gracious dance of echoing and reverberating beauty. 'Broken
Memory' is another fundamental parable in the Book of The Morita Law
of Techno. The high priest reads the Proverbs, his chimes of trance
hypnotize the crowds through an infinite vertigo of magnetizing dance
rhythms. A serious effort for serious holiday celebrations.

Reviews: "The latest addition to the evergrowing
33 1/3 series (now up to volume 51) is an in-depth look at Nick Drake's
final album "Pink Moon". Tackling a 28 minute album of sparse
folk by an artist whose life went largely undocumented (there are
no known video clips or interviews with Drake) is a daunting task,
but Petrusich handles the job nicely by telling the story through
interviews with the people who knew Drake and worked with him musically,
as well as testimonials from current artists who have felt his influence.
She also does a great service to the readers by not painting Drake
as some romantically doomed poetic soul, like so many other writers
have done in the past. In fact, she does an excellent job of dispelling
many Drake myths (ex: he didn't anonymously leave the tapes for Pink
Moon at Island's reception desk without saying a word), and even points
out flaws in the album (many of the vocals are garbled). The most
interesting part of the book is the final third which focuses on Pink
Moon's 21st Century revival thanks to a 2000 Volkswagon commercial
featuring the title track. While many make the argument that using
a song to push a product cheapens the artistry of the song, "Pink
Moon" was used to such great effect that it has simultaneously
become synonymous with Volkswagon. More importantly, thanks to commercial
exposure, annual sales of the album jumped from 6,000 to 74,000 in
the year that it hit the airwaves - exposing Drake's work to a new
generation. Perhaps the best praise I can give the book is that after
I finished reading it I put it down and listened to Pink Moon."

Belle & Sebastian's If You're Feeling Sinister (33 1/3 Paperback
Book)
PS, US If You're Feeling Sinister includes interviews with band members,
producers, management, and a range of fans, and provides perspective
on how Belle & Sebastian transformed themselves, over the space
of a decade, from an underground, slightly shambolic cult secret into
a polished, highly entertaining, mainstream pop group.
Description
If You're Feeling Sinister shows how Belle & Sebastian transformed
themselves over the space of a decade, from a slightly shambolic cult
secret into a polished, highly entertaining, mainstream pop group.
Along the way, the book shows how the internet has revolutionized
how we discover new music-often at the cost of romance and mystery.
Authors
Scott Plagenhoef is Managing Editor for Pitchfork Media, the world's
most popular and influential alternative music website.
Reviews
"Plagenhoef knows his subject matter inside
and out and has gone the extra mile to research and contextualize
the work- a necessary task, since the band refused to be interviewed
for the project...it's nice to see a modern classic get some due recognition."

Modern Ambivalence
PS, JAPAN Modern Ambivalence is the fourth album by Leeds long standing
proponent of electronic music, RandomNumber. Modern Ambivalence is
the latest incarnation of an evolving style which has taken shape
over the past eight or so years which flowered from early noise experiments
that gave way to a tentative and primitive electronica that was released
on the now defunct, yet legendary CDR label, Fencing Flatworm. Since
these early digital musings Robson's music has charted a course of
increasing melody and of rhythmical complication with releases for
California's Rocket Racer 2002's Understand Your Date & Time of
Nowhere and Mogwai's Rock Action 2001's NME Dance single of the Week
"The Fact That I Did" EP, Towards The Forlorn Society (2003)
for Catmobile Records took the trademark sound to it's limit with
it's brittle and unsettling mix of rhythmic obfuscation and winter
smeared synth impressionism that tested the boundaries of home brewed
electronic music. During this period, other more accessible EPs and
mixes appeared for labels as diverse as Vacuous Pop and Irritant (who
gave homes to early releases by Kid606, Knifehandchop and Printed
Circuit). Shows with the likes of I Am Robot & Proud, Printed
Circuit, Kid 606 and Cex would see the randomNumber live performance
taken across the waters to France, USA, Mexico and Canada throughout
the whole 2002 to 2004 period and would represent Robson's most prolific
period of international touring as a solo artist. The tensions of
these awkward, yet compelling mid-period pieces soon gave way to a
more confident and relaxed sound that was no less compromising in
it's desire to chart the dark and melancholic landscape of contemporary
electronica, but presented a more coherent and accessible sound that
appealed to a wider audience. Golden Acre Sleeps (Highpoint Lowlife)
(2006) ushers in the dawn of a Post-Electronica era of scene fragmentation
and ghettoisation with bedroom producers increasingly marginalized
into obscurity or MP3 mediocrity, against this backdrop, Golden Acre
comes across as a breath of fresh air from the very grassroots of
the scene. Throughout this recent period, the randomNumber sound continues
to develop, as Golden Acre was being released to a world increasingly
enthralled by the new breed of over confident pretty boys with guitars,
giddy on corporate expense accounts, Robson continues to be a credible
live performer at both rock and electronic shows, playing with the
likes of Thee More Shallows, Pram, Clark, A Silver Mount Zion, Christ
and Bracken to name a few, showcasing material from the Modern Ambivalence
sessions.

Strawberry Guillotine
PS, US Sic Alps toss out three new tracks for this seven". Title
track 'Strawberry Guillotine' takes the listener on a guided tour
of an imagined war between the sprawling Golden Gate Park homeless
population and the more established model yacht community. Musket
blasts sound off as shopping carts laden with gasoline and styrofoam
emerge from the silent bushes and charge the blood-dimmed shores of
the cement-bottomed Spreckles Lake. Cover art co-opted from '90s L.A.
anti-legends Summer Hits, who stole it from the Walker Brothers in
the first place. Apparently Rex from Summer Hits is now homeless in
London where his long beard is black on one side and fully gray on
the other. This record is humbly dedicated to him.

Vapaa
Hum Hum Hum
PS, FINLAND Vapaa is a loose collective of musicians but this recording
represents the basic 'core' group; Joel Kivela, Tiitus Petajaniemi,
Keijo Virtanen and Jari-Pekka Koho. We met in Jyvaskyla, Finland in
year 2003-2004 and after that we have made many records to different
labels and played live shows around Finland and one tour in Europe
as Keijo and the Free Players. Organic, drifting psychedelic improv
without much in the way of modern equivalents. Easily compared to
a few Krautrock favorites (early Amon Duul 2 and a very quiet Ash
Ra Tempel) -- but in general a bit more relaxed (perhaps a little
International Harvester?) For those well versed in the LVD sound,
this is fairly definitive.

Wilson, Carl
Celine Dion's Let's Talk About Love (33 1/3 Paperback Book)
PS, US Non-fans regard Céline Dion as ersatz and plastic, yet
to those who love her, no one could be more real, with her impoverished
childhood, her (creepy) manager-husband's struggle with cancer, her
knack for howling out raw emotion. There's nothing cool about Céline
Dion, and nothing clever. That's part of her appeal as an object of
love or hatred - with most critics and committed music fans taking
pleasure (or at least geeky solace) in their lofty contempt. This
book documents Carl Wilson's brave and unprecedented year-long quest
to find his inner Céline Dion fan, and explores how we define
ourselves in the light of what we call good and bad, what we love
and what we hate.
Authors: Carl Wilson is a writer and editor
at The Globe and Mail, Canada's national newspaper, and his work also
has appeared in Pitchfork, Slate, The New York Times, Blender and
many other publications. His pieces were selected for two of Da Capo
Books' annual Best Music Writing collections, in 2002 and 2007, by
guest editors Jonathan Lethem and Robert Christgau. He runs the popular
music blog Zoilus.com and is part of the team behind Trampoline Hall,
Toronto's acclaimed nightclub series of lectures by non-experts, which
toured America in 2002.
Reviews: "Let's Talk" about one of
the most interesting music books you'll read this year... The always
critical and erudite Mr. Wilson actually approached Let's Talk About
Love as a non-fan grappling with questions of "good" and
"bad" taste... It's almost certainly the only installment
in the series to discuss French-Canadian race relations, rockism,
and Milan Kundera's thoughts on kitsch."

Baja
Wolfhour (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, US Daniel Vujanic´s third full-length release under the
alias Baja, entitled, intensively displays the composer/musician´s
exciting approach towards a "free electronica" genre. Fusing
stripped-down folk, (free-)jazz, twisted pop, electroacoustic sound,
maximized-minimalism, indietronics, eerie chamber music and a portion
of sedative post-post-rock, "Wolfhour" plays with postmodern
expectations as much as possible while avoiding pretentious, highbrow
implications. There is at least as much ear-friendly repetition as
there is stunning fragmentation. Vujanic´s compositions range
from psychedelic piano ambience to sunny uptempo-pop, from electronic
jazz fusion to cryptic sample ruins. Leitmotifs appear, evolve and
fall apart into transcribed bits of data nebula. Beginnings sound
like ends and vice versa. Sounds teleport. Comments on Baja's Sound:
"Mirroring the obstinacy and arbitrary nature of human emotions,
Vujanic is using electronic music in a way that makes it less a statement
about media or a contemporary discussion about subverting conventional
songwriting than a tool of matter-of-factness..." - Coke Machine
Glow "If the indie rock just isn't getting it done for you anymore,
Baja's enveloping, intangible compositions may be just the guide you
need to more engaging musical territory. Tiny Mix Tapes ...beautifully
strange thing in between postrock, notebookindie, jazzy bitparts and
occasional guitar eruptions and - yes, indeed - pop..." (10 points)

Celletti, Alessandra
Way Out (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22nd)
PS, UK LTM is proud to announce a new studio album from Alessandra
Celletti, the virtuoso Italian composer/pianist whose previous CDs
include acclaimed interpretations of works by Glass, Satie and Gurdjieff.
Way Out is Alessandra's third album of original material, following
Overground (1997) and Chi Mi Darà le Ali (2006). Recorded in
Rome in 2007, Way Out marks an innovative exploration of several musical
styles, including vocal tracks sung by Alessandra as well as a number
of her exquisite solo piano compositions. She is joined on most of
the tracks by drummer Fabio Ferri, while Renzo Pin provided English-language
lyrics. Stand-out tracks include Dear To Me, Burning and Hundred Points,
the latter a future pop classic complemented by a brilliant animated
video clip made by Tony Sbarbaro. A unique set that defies classification,
Way Out also features one bonus song, the beautiful title track from
Alessandra's previous artist album, Chi Mi Darà le Ali. The
memorable cover image is the painting Pensando alla Guerra by artist
Isobel Blank. Short biography: Alessandra Celletti studied piano at
the Santa Cecilia Music Conservatory in Rome . After graduating she
continued her studies with Vera Gobbi Belcredi, specializing in French
piano works of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. In 1994 she
released Les sons et les parfums, an album of pieces by Debussy, Ravel
and Satie. Since then she has followed an irregular artistic path,
characterized by sudden departures from classical music. Her second
album, Viaggio a Praga, an exploration of the work of Bohemian composers,
saw Alessandra awarded a scholarship by the Czech Republic in 1997.
On returning to Italy she began working with Kha Records. Her collection
Esoterik Satie proved hugely popular in France , and Gnossienne #1
was used by Guy Ritchie in his 2005 movie Revolver. Alessandra is
now preparing to release two new albums. The Golden Fly will appear
in Italy in October 2007, and Way Out by LTM in January 2008.

Chico Hamilton Quintet/Elmer Bernstein
OST: Sweet Smell Of Success (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, UK One of the most important films of the fifties, Sweet Smell
Of Success boasts one of the great jazz scores; a combination of abstract
jazz themes written and performed by the Chico Hamilton Quintet and
a furious orchestral score by the masterful Elmer Bernstein. These
albums were released seperately in 1957 - both became very considerable
rarities - and are here combined in a single edition in digital format
for the first time. Sweet Smell Of Success is memorable for the vicious
performances of Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis and its uniquely nasty
view of the tough underbelly of New York fifty years ago. It was directed
by Alexander mackendrick ('The Ladykillers' 'Whisky Galore' 'The Man
In The White Suite' 'Mandy') Its audience is with jazz and film buffs
and the eternally stylish; strong export potential everywhere.

4-Track Blues (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE TBA)
PS, US 4 song EP from some French kid(s?) making with the Memphis-sound

rough. Scums stats: 600 copies on baby- blue swirled vinyl.

Devine & Griffiths
Wheels To Get To Heaven (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 8TH)
PS, UK Ian Devine is guitarist with Manchester post-punk band Ludus
and one half of the duo Devine & Statton. This is the new album
recorded with Amanda Griffiths on vocals. To narrow the field, this
is a record that sits in the same emotional and musical league as
the third release from The Velvet Underground, the first album by
The Smiths, Neil Young's 'Harvest Moon', Nico's 'The Chelsea Girls',
Carole King's 'Tapestry' or Joni Mitchell's 'Court and Spark'. And
how to justify such a grand claim? It all comes back to the music,
and the world opened up by the music. 'Wheels To Get To Heaven' is
a near perfect conflation of darkness and light: that such enchanting,
mesmeric songs make eloquent not simply such sadness, but such heartfelt
vulnerability to the curves and ragged edges of seemingly commonplace
days.

Dolenz, Jones, Boyce & Hart
Same (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 15TH)
PS, UK Almost immediately after the demise of The Monkees in 1970,
there was industry clamour for a reunion and publisher Christian Dewalden
came forward with an offer to finance the project. Micky Dolenz and
Davy Jones were enthusiastic but as Mike Nesmith wasn't interested
and Peter Tork couldn't be found a kind of pseudo-Monkees was created
enlisting the services of gifted songwriting team of Tommy Boyce and
Bobby Hart, who had written The Monkees first number one 'Last Train
To Clarksville', 'The Monkees Theme (Hey, Hey We're The Monkees)'
and '(I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone'. So Dolenz, Jones, Boyce &
Hart was born. With the Monkees logo under copyright and not available
for their use, the foursome set off on tour as 'the great golden hits
of the Monkees - the guys who wrote 'em and the guys who sang 'em.'
DJBH made its first public appearance on July 4, 1975 at six flags
over mid-America in St. Louis, Missouri, where they were met by 12,500
of the same screaming fans who had followed the Monkees 10 years previously.
Performing a raft of Monkee hits (Peter Tork had joined DJBH onstage
at Disneyland) the band appeared on 'American Bandstand' and 'Don
Kirshner's rock concert' and toured the States for a year before heading
to the far east. They have the distinction of being the first American
band to play in Thailand (they had to cut their hair to be allowed
into the country!). The success of the American tour secured a contract
with capitol records. The subsequent 'Dolenz Jones Boyce & Hart'
was produced by Boyce & Hart and though light and very pop, is
regarded as the most coherent Monkeerelated
release since 1967¹s 'Pisces Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones'.

Durutti Column, The
Circuses & Bread (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, UK LTM is proud to announce the release of four expanded CDs by
The Durutti Column, the legendary Factory Records ensemble formed
and fronted by virtuoso guitarist/composer Vini Reilly. Circuses &
Bread was originally released by the Factory Benelux label in April
1986, and features ten tracks written and performed by Vini Reilly,
together with drummer Bruce Mitchell. Stand-out tracks include All
That Love & Maths Can Do and the single Tomorrow. This expanded
edition of Circuses & Bread also features ten bonus tracks, including
the rare Japanese single For Noriko/Love Fading, compilation album
tracks Verbiers and The Aftermath, and four previously unreleased
tracks from the cancelled 1983 album Short Stories For Pauline. The
bonus cuts also include the rarely heard 1983 single I Get Along Without
You Very Well, a Hoagy Carmichael cover sung by Lindsay Reade and
dedicated to her former husband, the late Anthony H. Wilson (Factory
Records founder and Durutti Column manager). The booklet restores
the original cover design by 8vo. Artist biography: Manchester native
Vini Reilly formed The Durutti Column in 1978, recording his debut
album The Return of the Durutti Column the following year with producer
Martin Hannett, a set of delicate instrumental tracks housed in an
abrasive sandpaper sleeve. Subsequent landmark albums include LC (1981),
Without Mercy (1984), The Guitar & Other Machines (1987), Sex
& Death (1993), Fidelity (1996) and Someone Else's Party (2003).
A prolific recording artist in his own right (usually with drummer
Bruce Mitchell), Reilly has also guested on records by Morrissey,
Olive and Holly Johnson. For many years the group were managed by
the late Anthony H. Wilson, founder of Factory Records.

Fair Weather
Beginning From An End (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, UK ANDY FAIRWEATHER LOW's CLASSIC PROGRESSIVE ALBUM - NOW 24-BIT
REMASTERED WITH 6 BONUS TRACKS. Following the demise of AMEN CORNER,
Andy Fairweather Low and fellow musical cohorts Blue Weaver, Clive
Taylor and Dennis Byron underwent a musical transition into the band
FAIR WEATHER. Heading into a "Progressive" direction the
band adopted a harder edge and were the first act to sign to RCA Records'
progressive imprint NEON (an attempt to rival Philips' VERTIGO label).
Perhaps the most successful NEON signing, the band secured a UK TOP
TEN hit in "Natural Sinner" before releasing their sole
album, "Beginning from an End". Featuring guest contributions
from DAVE EDMUNDS on "I Hear You Knockin'", although the
album was a success in Europe, FAIR WEATHER lasted a mere 13 months
before disbanding. This ESOTERIC reissue gathers together the album
and six tracks released over three singles to comprise this definitive

to a noted singer-songwriter. Recording an album for Marmalade Records,
Farr then signed to CBS Records in 1970, recording this sole album

Fessenden
v1.1 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, US Joshua Convey, Stephen Fiehn, and Steven Hess (On, Pan American,
Haptic) have been actively writing and performing as Fessenden since
2004. This Chicago/New York-based electro-acoustic trio creates distinct,
atmospheric and progressive sound collages, at times weaving quietly
subtle textures against harsh moments of volume, or low hums and buzzes
against crisp percussion while drones interplay with staccato chords.
"v1.1" represents their first release of studio-recorded
material. An exercise in restraint, where hypnotic and atmospheric
palettes create a vague sense of foreboding, this release engages
the acute listener with new concepts of structure and texture. Praise
for Fessenden: "Playing on a rusty knife edge, these artists
mould a new genre of inquisitive reduction of technical abuse..."
-Touching Extremes "Contemplative music that combines the best
of improvised music, real instruments and yet manages to sound so
micro-sound." -Vital Weekly "Like drifting Arctic waters
in an atomic sub, slowly diving, headset plugged directly into the

I've heard, Fessenden members seem to be in no hurry to move things
along here...just a few compass degrees this way or that...Fessenden

Fine Arts Showcase, The
Sings Rough Bunnies (PRE-ORDER {AGAIN!}: SALEABLE JANUARY 8TH)
PS, SWEDEN Third album from Gustaf Kjellvander's Fine Arts Showcase,
and the follow-up to his 110% brilliant 'Radiola'. The short version:
TFAS covers 11 song by Swedish cult-twee-punk-lofi duo The Rough Bunnies.
Highly recommended. The long version: This is an album of many stories.
Gustaf Kjellvander and his friends in The Fine Arts Showcase have
made a covers album, entirely based on songs from the Swedish, rather
unknown, jangly, lo-fi band Rough Bunnies. Why is that? Let's make
Gustaf himself explain: "I was first introduced to Anna Vermina
and her cousin Frida, the founding members of Rough Bunnies and Inside
Riot, through mutual friends. Frida gave me a CD-R just days before
they were about to move to Berlin. About six months later I was looking
for someone to rent my spare room. I bumped into Frida by chance,
who told me she had moved back from Berlin to Malmö and needed
a place to stay - so she moved in. I was already smitten by Inside
Riot at this time, and when Frida played me the songs they had recorded
in Berlin, along with the Rough Bunnies record C-sides, it blew me
away. I played it to everyone who came over to my house. They became
an obsession that carries on to this day. I knew I wanted the Fine
Arts Showcase to cover their songs. The problem was that with a catalogue
of songs as amazing as theirs it was hard to pick just one, so I came
up with the idea that we should do an entire record instead (in the
Merle Haggard sings Jimmy Rodgers tradition). And here it is: a musical
love letter to two of my favorite songwriters, a celebration of the
pop geniuses of the Vermina family. Rough Bunnies (and their twin
group Inside Riot) have inspired me more than any other band this
side of the millennium and this record is my way of thanking them.

Heaven
Brass Rock 1 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, UK CLASSIC PROGRESSIVE JAZZ ROCK ALBUM REISSUED ON CD OFFICIALLY
FOR THE FIRST TIME- 24-BIT REMASTERED FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES.
Heaven, a jazz rock group from Portsmouth, burst forth onto the British
rock scene in 1970 when they appeared at the legendary Isle of Wight
festival sharing a bill with The Who, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix et al.
Making a stunning debut, the band (now managed by festival organiser
Rikki Farr), soon secured a recording deal with CBS Records who signed
the band for a large advance. The resulting double album "Brass
Rock 1" appeared in 1971, adorned in a lavish fold-out sleeve.
Well received critically, the album failed to achieve the expected
success and Heaven soon disbanded, leaving behind a fine example of
classic jazz rock. Officially released on CD for the first time, this
Esoteric Recordings reissue is digitally remastered from the original

Klein, Alan
Well At Least It's British (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 29TH)
PS, UK 60's Brit Pop with an influence on 90's Brit Pop. Includes
rare Joe Meek produced tracks. All first time on CD, and first ever
reissue. After writing the soundtrack to the quintessential pre- Beatles
English pop movie What A Crazy World Alan Klein scored a deal with
Decca to write and perform his view of English society at the time.
His style of delivery was very distinctive, not unlike contemporary
Anthony Newley, and writing like Lionel Bart. Alan was managed by
Ken Pitt who also had another client called David Jones, soon to be
David Bowie. That the early style of Bowie's delivery is also akin
to Kleins must surely be more than coincidence. In the mid 90's Damon
Albarn was asked about his influences and said about this LP "
...it was instrumental in me making Modern Life Is Rubbish, and changing
and getting an idea of my own self.... I can't believe that David
Bowie didn't know him inside out, and the same with Ray Davies. My
favourite track goes ' he's a twentieth-century Englishman ' (see
Blur's For Tomorrow). It's a fantastic record." Klein went on
to tour the world as vocalist in the New Vaudeville Band. For bonus
tracks we include the two singles he wrote and recorded in 1962, both
produced by Joe Meek, and the 1965 singles including the withdrawn
Age Of Corruption.

Kubin, Felix Und Das Mineral Orchester
Music for Theatre and Radio Play (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, GERMANY We are extremely excited to announce the 1st collaboration
between the Dekorder label and our old friend, local conspirator and
private hair gardener Felix Kubin. Kubin has achieved worldwide reputation
by releasing post-dadaist, futuristic NDW-influenced Organ&Korg
smash hits on his own Gagarin label, on A-Musik, Ski-pp, Meeuw, Diskono
et al. He has collaborated with People Like Us, Coolhaven, Mark Boombastik,
Asmus Tietchens, ensemble Intégrales, David Fenech, Ergo Phizmiz,
Boris D. Hegenbart, Wojtek Kucharczyk and many others. His first recordings
date back to his teenage years in the early 1980's, followed by his
electroacoustic noise duo Klangkrieg and the pseudo-communist Liedertafel
Margot Honecker. Right from the start Felix Kubin has written and
recorded music for films (hence the title of his first album) by the
likes of Mariola Brillowska and Anke Feuchtenberger and continues
the German tradition of "Hörspiel" (radio play) with
works such as "Territerrortorium", "Nachtspeicher",
"Orpheus' Psykotron" and "Syndikat für Gegenlärm"
(with guest appearances by Matmos, DAT Politics and Wolfgang Müller
of Die Tödliche Doris). Some of Kubin's most gorgeous and adventurous
works are his contributions to "The Raft" (a radio play
by the mysterious Xentos Bentos of The Homosexuals, directed by Lukas
Simonis of Coolhaven, Trespassers W, Dull Schicksal) and his soundtracks
for theatre plays by Branko Simic ("Zufall", based on a
short story by Vladimir Nabokov) and the notorious Schorsch Kamerun.
The latter (known in Germany as a member of Goldene Zitronen) directed
"Hollywood Elegien" based on a song cycle by Bert Brecht
and Hanns Eisler. Now the best parts of these works are for the first
time available on LP and CD, simply (and aptly) titled "Music
for Theatre and Radio Play". While the musical spectrum on this
release covers a variety of styles and moods it's still almost immediately
recognizable as a typically Kubin-ist work featuring the main ingredients
his records and body-and-mind-boggling live shows are famous for.
Twisted rythms & playfully clever arrangements that could have
been created by a mutated reincarnation of the legendary Juan Esquivel;
hauntingly ethereal tracks sounding like a narcoleptic John Carpenter
playing Angelo Badalamenti arrangements; contorted Big Band music,
pre-war Schlager and Vaudeville sent through a malfunctioning pre-digital
time machine; Ennio Morricone cloned as a Russian male choir; instrumental
workers' songs Hanns Eisler might have imagined in a feverish nightmare
- it's all there, and more!

Magnetic Fields, The
Distortion (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 15TH)
PS, US New album! STEREOGUM: "The Magnetic Fields can't be accused
of false advertising in titling studio album eight Distortion: Each
tune's wrapped in a fuzzy, clamoring shell, even when the feedbacking
acoustic piano and guitar hum's relegated to deep in the background.
Distortion's consistent textural palette's reminiscent of Holiday's
"Desert Island," but this is all about icy New York City,
or some other place where it snows. Besides distortion, the songs
are coated in the lonesome darkness of The Charm Of The Highway Strip.
Sigh. On the whole, it sports more sonic depth than 2004's sorta minor,
stringier i. Let's consider it a baker's dozen of sad-and-out-of-love
songs... Let's also consider it incredibly beautiful."

GUIDE: "The brief tracks on Soateramic Sounds... are a giddy
cacophony of fuzzy pop gems. Magoo's songs are noisy, quirky, and
occasionally low-fi, but above all they're hooky, with sing-along
choruses and friendly melodies packed into every second. It's quite
a likeable approach -- some of the album's tracks are rockers, others
are mid-tempo pop songs, and still others, surprisingly enough, are
atmospheric and rather mellow. Each song casually dedicates itself
to churning out snappy, memorable structures. Between the band's charming
generosity with melody, their scattered and idiosyncratic approach
to instrumental presentation, and their inexhaustible supply of hooks,
Soateramic Sounds... proves to be an immensely satisfying listen."

work inspired by Moorcock's writings and was wonderfully conceived
and delivered. The ESOTERIC reissue is remastered from the original
tapes and includes 7 bonus tracks, 3 of which are previously unreleased.
The booklet features an essay by HAWKWIND founder & friend of
Michael Moorcock NIK TURNER. It an essential release for fans of HAWKWIND,

Heretic Pride (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 19TH)
PS, US The Mountain Goats have recorded four fine albums that have
established them as a genuine cult phenomenon and confirmed John Darnielle's
status as one of the finest lyricists of his generation. "Heretic
Pride" is a suite of songs about mythical creatures, imaginary
cults, slasher films, and pulp fiction novelists. Here, Darnielle
has also come up with some of the most anthemic, impassioned, and
downright catchy songs of his career. "It's rare to come across
such specific and purposeful prose in modern pop. But, alongside Bright
Eyes' Conor Oberst and the Decemberists' Colin Meloy, John Darnielle
is helping bring fine lyric writing back to life" - NY Daily
News.

Nyro, Laura
More Than A New Discovery (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 29TH)
PS, UK Rev-Ola proudly re-presents the album which introduced to the
world the wonderful talent of Laura Nyro! More Than A New Discovery
(aka The First Songs) is openly informed by the styles of Laura's
youth. She had just turned 19 when she recorded the album in early
1966, and the songs retain a youthful exuberance and glisten with
beautiful pop melodies and then-fashionable, sturdy 1960s New York
arrangements. Laura's lyrics are already as poetically-charged and
mature as at her peak, from the wise "And When I Die" to
the observational approach of "Buy and Sell." Musically,
the album was obviously tailored to fit the prevailing landscape of
1960s female pop singers and it often has the same soulful atmosphere
of Dusty Springfield and Evie Sands or the brash, bravura pop of Barbra
Streisand, who was to take "Stoney End" to the charts three
years later. Although Laura's albums would become more and more influential
and adventurous, this, her first outing, features the majority of
her most famous and revered compositions. Due to production decisions
she did mot agree with, Laura Nyro more or less disowned her debut
for many years, until the music fan in her began to appreciate the
set forms as one might a Motown hit of the period, no matter how overexposed
and hackneyed. With new manager David Geffen, a slew of covers of
her material hitting the charts, and a controversial showing at the
Monterey Pop Festival, Laura Nyro signed a favourable new deal with
Columbia Records, making some of the most essential albums of the
late 1960s and 1970s...but that is another, quite wonderful story.
Listen now to where it all began. Fantastic album by one of our very
favourite artists! Beautifully re-mastered in true RevOla style with
lovely packaging as usual... A must for all fans of Laura Nyro, and
of classic New York girlpop... the set form she made into so much
more!

PS, UK Two of the most brilliant poets of the beat generation, Kenneth
Patchen and Lawrence Ferlinghetti performing their compelling works
in a jazz context This edition captures the movement in poetry toward
all-inclusiveness, and a belief that the language and music of the
street had their own beauty, integrity and significance, rooted as
they were in the experience of ordinary people. Patchen is one the
most important american writers of the 20th century and Ferlinghetti
wrote 'Coney Island Of The Mind' which sold a million copies. In terms
of both attitude and style, Patchen and Ferlinghetti paved the way
for Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison and Captain Beefheart. Strong export potential

S.T. Mikael
Mind of Fire (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 15TH)
PS, SWEDEN After an 11 year silence, here's a new album by the mysterious
and legendary Swedish psychedelic multi-instrumentalist, S.T. Mikael.
Mikael spearheaded the DIY psychedelic rock/folk movement of the late
1980s/mid-'90s... Now that he's finally back, here's a chance at last
for the world to join his psychedelic world again. The music, stretching
out in many different directions, has been done freely and spontaneously
in an extremely relaxed and happy environment. He also joins forces
with Dungen's Reine Fiske and Fredrik Björling, whose musical
expertise now also grace the grooves. These otherworldly acid tripper
recordings now exist in the real world and S.T. Mikael proves, once
again, to be a gifted songwriter and an unconventional performer with
a very personal ear for acoustics and an emotional honesty seldom
seen these days. Melodic folk-rock elements flow with waves of heavy
fuzz-phase leads; weird, detached, haunted vocals echo over the band
and the whole thing seems to teeter on the brink of psychedelic oblivion.
This is not psychedelic revival, but the psychedelic NOW. His soaring
vocals, surreal lyrics, fragile, folky melodies, heavy fuzz riffs,
mind-bending soul funk and penchant for the spiritual and mystical
make this a fascinating voyage that is so mind-twisting, soul-swirling,
upper psychedelic that your third eye takes you on a joyride through
an altered state! This album makes your brain start thinking in those
pebble-splash-pond-mind circular expanding waveforms that reveal the
password to tomorrow. The CD also contains 9 previously-unreleased
vintage recordings and unique spoken introductions by Mikael. Limited
edition of 2,000 copies only.

Sambassadeur
Migration (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, SWEDEN Migration is a sparkling pop album, where breezy vocals
meet deceptively sunny arrangements that perfectly wrap up the most
heartfelt melodies. Biography: Sambassadeur debuted on Labrador in
winter 2005 with the release of the "Between the Lines"-EP.
The EP was followed by their self-titled debut album later that year.
The songs were all recorded at home which gave the production a primitive
quality that labeled them by some as being a lo-fi-twee act. This
was never the bands intention. If the cliché is that songs
are like children, then Sambassadeur saw no purpose in stagnating
in front of their home-computer while watching their kids being taken
custody by those who didn't have the ability to, indeed, read between
the lines and see through the understated surface of the songs. This
called for some change. The EP "Coastal Affairs", released
in may 2006, marked the start of a development towards a more luxurious
setting. Without loosing their enigmatic qualities, songs like "Kate"
and "Marie" introduced a breeze of new confidence. The Sambassadeurs
saw the opportunity to take things to even greater heights and returned
to the scene in late august 2007 with "Subtle Changes".

Samurai
S-T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, UK Classic Progressive rock album - Now 24-bit remastered from
the original master tapes. New essay & interview with Dave Lawson.
"Samurai" is truly a lost classic of the Progressive era.
Released on the short lived Greenwich Gramophone label in 1972, the
album was influenced by the experiments of groups such as KING CRIMSON,
GENTLE GIANT et al, but was more than a mere clone of these bands.
Evolving from the equally excellent band WEB (whose album "I
Spider" is a classic of the genre), the musicianship on the album
was excellent and Keyboard player DAVE LAWSON's compositions were
groundbreaking and memorable. Sadly the group disbanded shortly after
the release of the record resulting in limited sales. However, the
influence of the album was not lost as both DAVE LAWSON and TONY REEVES
soon joined DAVE GREENSLADE to form the group GREENSLADE, effectively
taking up the musical mantle laid down by SAMURAI. This Esoteric reissue
features a booklet with previously unseen photographs and an interview
with DAVE LAWSON.

Scientists, The
Swampland: Birth Of The Scientists (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, UK Formed in Perth, Australia, but later to relocate to Melbourne
and then London, Kim Salmon's Scientists played a brand of minimalist
punked-up swamp blues that saw them become legends on at least three
continents. Just about everyone loves the Scientist, from Sonic Youth
and Mudhoney (both of whom have asked the band to play with them)
to Sub Pop to Henry Rollins - in fact, the entire US alt-rock hierarchy.
And what's not to like - this new compilation for the UK features
the strongest tracks from the band's legendary Blood Red River recordings,
notably 'Swampland', one of the most evocative and best loved Australian
songs of all time. But that's not all: as well as the studio recordings,
with Kim's permission we've unearthed some dynamite live recordings
from 1982 that have never been released anywhere before. The packaging
includes a mammoth essay on the band's history written by Alex Ogg,
with full co-operation and humorous asides from Kim, plus photos and
memorabilia. A handy starting point for those new to the band, featuring
as it does the cream of the Scientists' work from their acclaimed
early Melbourne period, but spiced up with some amazing live tracks
for the established fan.

Set In Sand
Nothing Against The Ocean (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, JAPAN "Nothing Against The Ocean" is the debut CD of
Set In Sand, licensed by Hue (JAPAN) from Abandon Building Records
(US). Set in Sand (one of the many aliases of producer Lendin Hopes)
was brought into this world around 2000, originally designed as a
purely electronic and instrumental project working within the nether-regions
of IDM. Early Set in Sand creations followed the blueprint for experimental
electronic song crafts, disjointed percussion and glitchy filtered
melodies with subtle instrumentation and vocal samples offering a
hint of things to come. Two net releases came out in this vein, the
self released "Are You Listening EP" and the full length
"You Say You Can't Sleep Alone" by German label Subsource.
Around 2004 Lendin reconnected with his singer-songwriter roots, adding
acoustic guitar and vocals to a large portion of his compositions.
Examples of this style can be found on the net release "Mini
Splintered Things" hosted by the good folks at Drift Records.
In addition to these three net releases Set in Sand has contributed
songs to a number of compilations including "Assemblage Sessions
1 and 2 CD's" (Abandon Building), "Subvaritrax" (Subvariant),
"Ctrl-Space" (Modsquare), "The Karaoke Hymnal"
(Peppermill Records) and "Calderas of the Mind" and "Heart
on the Right Spot" ( Project Mooncircle/ Botanica Del Jibaro).
Set in Sand is also the producer for the whacky Hip Hop duo Flowtation
Addvice (who's debut "Terrain Clouds" is due out on Abandon
Building in early 08.) With "NATO" Lendin has synthesized
all the elements of his early work into a weird piece of sonic experimentation
masquerading as a sort of Pop album. Half of the albums 8 songs feature
vocals, a surreal blend of androgynous singing and hyperactive MC
work. The music is based around skeletons of guitar and programmed
beats with multiple layers of digital nonsense wrapped around them.
A most distinct touch is Lendin's use of live drums in complimentary
patterns over the grounding electronic percussion. It results in a
blurring mesh of chaotic calm, establishing a kind of fresh voice
in the world of beatmaking. In other words it's pretty decent stuff.

Silver Apples
Contact [re-issue] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 8TH)
PS, US This is a reissue of the second album Contact by '60s electronic
legends Silver Apples, originally released by Kapp Records in 1969.
This enigmatic duo, armed only with percussion, vocals and an early,
specialized synthesizer, is often credited with giving the musical
world its first electronic album, as well as having a significant
influence on bands which followed in their wake; bands such as Ultravox
and Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark. Silver Apples, named after
a W.B. Yeats poem, consisted of electronics wiz Simeon Coxe and percussionist
Danny Taylor. Simeon built an impressive collection of electronic
paraphernalia (dubbed the "Simeon") which ultimately included
a dozen oscillators, six of them tuned to bass notes which he played
with his feet, an assortment of sound filters, telegraph keys, radio
parts, lab gear and a variety of second-hand electronic junk. Contact
ushered in the band's recorded popularity and a national tour was
quickly organized. Several tracks on Contact feature bass lines provided
by Simeon's banjo playing, but it is the clever use of the lead oscillator
and new-found intensity of the lyrics that sets Contact apart from
its predecessor. Such was the level of Simeon's growing electronic
proficiency that the intro to the album's opening track, "You
And I" more than successfully recreates the sound of an airplane
taking off. Silver Apples all but disappeared from the musical firmament
when Kapp folded in 1970, only to re-emerge in January 1997 to perform
before a celeb-packed audience at the Knitting Factory. Again, the
critics were unanimous. As the MC waxed poetic during an introduction
to the Silver Apples concert in San Francisco, 1968: "You are
about to have probably the most unusual musical experience of your
life. The music will enter areas of your mind never before opened
until now. At times it may be hard to understand, but if you let the
music penetrate, you'll dig it."

S-T [re-issue] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 8TH)
PS, US This is a reissue of the self-titled first album by '60s electronic
legends Silver Apples, originally released by Kapp Records in 1968.
Fresh off their stint as The Overland Stage Electric Band, Simeon
and Dan Taylor formed their own extravagant, two-man electronic space-odyssey,
Silver Apples, to pretty remarkable critical acclaim. Their debut
enjoyed a 10-week stay in Billboard's Top 100 list, and the album's
first track, "Oscillations," made the Top 10 list in numerous
cities around the U.S. The music critics loved them. "What's
so amazing is that they make absolutely mind-shattering music with
all this junky equipment" commented one reviewer, quite possibly
astounded over the then-mindbending concept of build-it-yourself electronics
combined with rock drums. The debut album features lyrics by poet
Stanley Warren who met the duo at the Third Annual Avant Garde Arts
Festival in 1968, organized by topless cellist Charlotte Moorman.
An absolutely essential piece of musical history from electronic/psychedelic/rock
music's ground-breaking legends.

Extras 64 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 8TH)
PS, SPAIN Souvenir's 'Extras 64' has been conceived as the epilogue
to their record '64' (Jabalina Música 2007), which was released
at the beginning of this year and critically acclaimed as an inspired
change of course in the sound of this heterodox Spanish indie band.
Initially intended as a single to feature their song 'Si tu sais pas'
-an irresistible techno-pop gem which Souvenir wrote and recorded
after the release of '64'- it has eventually become a real treat for
fans which includes their cover version of Blondie's 'Hanging on the
telephone' (which Souvenir are performing live on their current tour),
three remixes of songs from '64', and their amazing first-ever video
of the song 'Allô, allô'. So 'Extras 64' features two
brand new tracks, a
video and three remixes which give songs from '64' an even more dance-oriented
dimension. For this task Souvenir have chosen artists on their same
wavelength, such as Johan Agebjörn (the Swedish producer and
songwriter who's responsible for the success of this year's brilliant
debutante Sally Shapiro) who has taken 'Allô, allô' to
new dancefloor heights, or Spanish singer Miqui Puig, who has remixed
'Une semaine en ballon'. Also, Souvenir's Jaime Cristóbal has
revamped his own 'Accident à Londres'. These new 5 dancefloor
fillers are topped by a brilliant video produced and directed by Spanish
ace company Producciones Entrelíneas. The video takes the avant-garde
aesthetics of '64' further on and the result is a pleasure to the
eye, with a special mention to Patricia, whose appearance on the video
is especially captivating. Iker Spozio, again, is responsible for
the 'Extras 64' artwork, and Arturo Vaquero has been in charge of
the mastering.

Sparrow, The
The Complete CBS Recordings 1966-67 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 29TH)
PS, UK After our amazing release by the legendary Mars Bonfire, here
is a follow-up of sorts....now listen carefully....Dennis Edmonton,
drummer Jerry Edmonton and bass player Nick St Nicholas had all played
together in Toronto 'British Invasion' band, Jack London & The
Sparrows in 1965. When the group split from singer Jack London, they
added new members, going through a succession of future Canadian music
stars, even swapping members back and forth with the legendary Mynah
Birds, before settling on permanent members John Kay and Goldy McJohn.
Soon, their new, high energy blues-rock style got them the attention
of the Rolling Stones agent Jerry Brandt, who got them a prestige
gig at Sybil Burton's hot nightclub Arthur in the summer of 1966.
A deal with Columbia Records followed, with a single "Tomorrow's
Ship" being the result. It failed to chart, as did the followup
"Green Bottle Lover", and The Sparrow decamped for California,
playing at every legendary venue with everyone you care to mention,
to a fair amount of acclaim. In June 1967, however, Dennis Edmonton
announced his decision to go solo, changing his name to Mars Bonfire.
This effectively fragmented the group, with St. Nicholas and new guitarist
Michael Monarch joining members of the Hard Times as T.I.M.E...though
Monarch soon left to join the other Sparrows in their new project
STEPPENWOLF...who broke through with songs written by Mars Bonfire
like "Born To Be Wild"....and were soon rejoined by St.
Nicholas... and so it was that all the members of THE SPARROW were
involved in the phenomenal success of STEPPENWOLF! A twisty turny
story, but, oh my, is the music worth it! The full Columbia recordings
of THE SPARROW including the lost audition tapes! Includes the first
full-on rock recording of "The Pusher" later made famous
by Steppenwolf...Beautifully remastered in true Rev-Ola style, with

Against Nurture (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, SCOTLAND ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "here are a few reasons why you
should care about Suckle: they are a band founded by ex-Vaselines
Frances McKee, they are on the antiestablishment, flag-waving Chemikal
Underground label, and they sound like a female-fronted Tindersticks
fighting the urge to vomit up an overdose of Prozac. Partly, this
is a consequence of McKee's sinister monotones guiding along melodies
that just barely scrape the sky of what a struggling listener could
call optimism. "So Happy Before" -- with touching echoes,
minimalist piano, and slide guitar -- stretches the very definition
of its title, while "Honey Suicide" builds up a subtle premise
of angular basslines and soaring, sun-streaked choruses that will
have you feeling elated and depressed at the exact same time. Suckle's
brand of enchanted unhappiness should not be undervalued: The simple
folk-pop of the past may be just a shadow, but this is the sound of
a confused personality just aching to be discovered."

Valet
Naked Acid (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 4TH)
PS, US 2nd solo release from Portland artist Valet, aka HONEY OWENS.
She states: "These songs were Inspired by the Pacific Northwest
landscape, semi-conscious dream states & the idea of one's dna
code being accessed as eternal memory. I started off w/ the idea to
make a 'songs' record but it really didn't turn out that way. Instead
the record became it's own story. Track one is a static beach journey
duet w/ ADRIAN ORANGE & tracks 3, 4 & 5 are collaborations
w/ MARK EVAN BURDEN (Silentist) on drums."

Garden Of Forking Paths (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, US Compiled by James Blackshaw, compositions were recorded specially
for this collection by Helena Espeval (Espers), James Blackshaw, Jozef
van Wissem & Chieko Mori. Beautifully assembled, the album serves
as a singular & particularly unique musical statement. A compilation
of experimental music for solo stringed instruments, with little to
no overdubs. "Despite the variation in instrumentation, not to
mention the differences in nationality & backgrounds of the performers
themselves, it is also interesting to note certain similarities to
be found between the five tracks contained on this compilation. Sometimes
it can be heard melodically; sometimes within the movement, space
or colour of the pieces; sometimes it is simply felt - a purity or
emotional resonance that defies analysis & can rarely be articulated
into words, at least not by me anyway." -Blackshaw

Wasted Youth
Wild And Wandering (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, UK This CD reissue of Wasted Youth's influential classic 'Wild
& Wandering' is widely considered to be a fore runner of the Goth
movement. It was originally released in 1981 on the Bridge House label.
The CD features 5 bonus tracks, including the singles 'Paris France'
and 'Do The Caveman'. All the bonus tracks are live recordings taken
from the band's album 'Wasted Youth Live'. The CD features all the
original artwork, the sleeve notes are written by the band's manager
and record company boss, Terence Murphy. There is also a complete
band discography included. Wasted Youth's career was short lived but
they left a lasting impression with their innovative sound in the
post punk days of London in the late 1970's. Wasted Youth's guitarist,
Rocco Barker, later of Flesh For Lulu, has been entertaining the nation
with his 12 week C4 TV series 'A Place In The Sun - Costa Chaos' which
sees him buying and developing a property in Spain.

I Spider (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, UK CLASSIC PROGRESSIVE ROCK ALBUM - NOW 24-BIT REMASTERED FROM
THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES. NEW ESSAY & INTERVIEW WITH DAVE LAWSON.
"I Spider" is truly a lost classic of the Progressive era.
Originally released by Polydor Records in 1970, the album was influenced
by the experiments of groups such as KING CRIMSON, GENTLE GIANT et
al, but was more than a mere clone of these bands. The group evolved
from an excellent blues influenced band who released three albums
for Deram, who then recruited Keyboard player and writer DAVE LAWSON
and recorded their final album. The musicianship on the album was
excellent and Keyboard player DAVE LAWSON's compositions were groundbreaking
and memorable. The group soon evolved into SAMURAI (whose eponymous
album is also released by ESOTERIC this month). This Esoteric reissue
is remastered from the original master tapes and features two bonus
tracks recorded live in Sweden in 1971, a booklet with previously
unseen photographs and an interview with DAVE LAWSON.

Xiu Xiu
Women As Lovers (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 29TH)
PS, US The performances, led by Stewart's one-of-a-kind voice, are
intense, virtuosic & painted in a spectrum of acoustic & electronic
colors that one would be hard pressed to find equaled on any album.
This marries the ancient w/ the futuristic, each in all their beauty
& terror. Traditional gongs collide w/ a rat's nest of computerized
layering. Make no mistake. No other Xiu Xiu album has ever been more
approachable or communicative on a basic human level.
