Parasol New Arrivals • May 01, 2007

Hey Sugar,

Well, tomorrow’s going to be a busy day around the old Parasol compound. Jose Gonzales is stopping through our sleepy neighborhood to shake hands and grace east-central Illinois with that golden voice and wooden-box-with-strings contraption. Our very own New Ruins will be going on before Jose’s set so if you’re in town, better pull that big hand forward a few minutes so you’ll be sure to get in because, unfortunately, there are no advanced tickets for this shindig.

In other news, we just found out that the new Trembling Blue Stars CD has been pushed back until June 5th. It’s well worth the wait, friends and it’s good that a handful of you good people have already gotten your pre-orders in. Since TBS’s flight has been delayed, it may be worth your while to explore their past catalog. There may have been a few catalog pieces that have slipped through the cracks.

Now it’s time for us to turn off the chatterbox and turn up the new Dinosaur Jr.

Really nice,

Royal/Paul

Aa
gAame
PS, US They've been honing their unique, intensely stylized brand of DIY maximalism in the lofts, clubs & parking lots of NYC since '02. Like an ADD-afflicted Boredoms or Aphex Twin re-imagined as a high school marching band, their polyrythmic sound synthesized elements of hardcore, ambient, pop, crunk, noise, dance, psych & dance filtered through their distinct, largely self-taught aesthetic.

Alex Delivery
Star Destroyer
PS, US ALEX DELIVERY have gleefully exposed their myriad gifts and influences with their debut full-length "Star Destroyer," almost two years in the making. On it the New York-based quintet have demonstrated their penchant for the electro-organic, seamlessly blending the sharp and gentle, like a chain-gang draped in organza. You can hear the chattering of insects resonating from the inside of a kettle drum, and you can imagine this colossal robo-beast wobbling and waltzing down an abandoned carnival boardwalk. Sylphs soar across strings, occasionally descending to enjoy some wiggle-worthy poly-rhythms. These and many more colorful characters have climbed aboard the "Star Destroyer."

Antiguo Automata Mexicano
Kraut Slut
PS, MEXICO Angel Sánchez Borges, the man behind AAM (Antiguo Automata Mexicano) takes techno to the next level with his second album and first release with Static Discos. Previously AAM released the infamous Microhate album on Germany's Background label. Inspired by German kraut and space rock, minimal techno and screwed up digital antics, AAM's Kraut Slut is the stuff of wicked dance dreams. Angel Sánchez Borges also records as Seekers Who Are Lovers on the Soundsister label. In a recent interview on URB Magazine, Borges says his secret to the AAM sound is his love for "My Bloody Valentine, a gentle way of dealing with strange layers of sounds. I want people to dance to these noisy grooves". Pitchformedia recently described his music in "the glitch/dub/minimal techno vein, with carefully constructed rips and blips stretched across a wide, white sonic canvas".

Asa Irons & Swaan Miller
S/T
PS, US This record is forever. After listending to it you'll realise that it doesn't matter that Asa Irons plays in Witch with J Mascis as well as the acclaimed folk outfit Feathers. This record needs no associations and it's songs are so timeless that they feel as if they've been passed around for generations and hardly need any recording medium at all. This is the first release from Asa Irons and Swann Miller but it sounds like they've lived within each others voices for a million years. Asa's deep-breath-voice lays down a mossy hill for Swann's beautiful voice to tread upon. His guitar work is simply intricate and his fingerpicking perfectly suits the way their voices combine to become one. This record always has been and always will be. This record is forever. "After spending years in New Hampshire and often Nova Scotia, I began writing songs about my Northeastern window through which I view the world. Most of the pieces represent strong fundamentals in my life such as living without comfort resources like electricity and running water, the building trends of carpentry and masonry with which I make my living, and the slow paced rural life in which I grew up. The land of Northeastern North America is very important to me and compelled me to describe it in the form of music. Many people in my life were musicians - my father, cousins, friends - so I had plenty of good examples to pull from and think about. My style of song writing, I believe, comes from the influence of these loved ones combined with certain deep-rooted melodies or images from books that have stuck with me. (Such as sound tracks of old cinema and authors like Tolstoy and Carolyn Chute.) My older sister's art work has also had a tremendous effect on the way I see the world. Many of her primary subjects revolve around various representations of our own home place and the people who inhabited this and the other woods houses in which we grew up. One of the people connected to me through music and lifestyle is Swann Miller. She is the daughter of a man who was a good friend of my father's. Through the '70's our fathers built houses together around N.H. and also played a lot of music. So, I have known Swann my whole life and perhaps it was inevitable that we made music together. When I reached her house in the winter of 2003, I had just had my notebook of songs stolen along with other things. I decided to try to catalogue all I could remember by practicing them. Swann practiced with me. On a whim, her boyfriend - who works as a sound engineer - recorded the two of us singing in an abandoned yellow women's bathroom in the basement of the building where they lived. It all took about an hour and a half including set up of mics, recording, and breaking down. I borrowed a twenty year old Guild guitar from a friend of a friend which was very similar to my father's guitar that I grew up with. I am so happy to have had the opportunity to help capture Swann's beautiful voice and continue the music of our families. The album is a quick glimpse of a world view from Southern New Hampshire through the voices of two old friends whose fathers were friends before them." Asa Irons

Asylum Choir, The
Look Inside The Asylum Choir
PS, UK Poised between his past as a top Wrecking Crew session man (Phil Spector, The Byrd's, Sonny And Cher) and assistant to Liberty A&R head Snuff Garret, and his future as a 1970s rock superstar, Leon Russell teamed up with his Texas psych buddy Marc Benno to work with Gene Clark, Harpers Bizarre and Gary Lewis in their new studio, eventually making this unusual and breathtaking album. Intended as a state-of-the- art, quasi-psychedelic statement: from the lead-off 'Welcome To Hollywood' to the bizarre 'suite' 'Episode Containing 3 Songs', 'N/Y. Op.', 'Land of Dog', 'Mr. Henri The Clown', the album attracted rave reviews from all the hip critics, but sadly proved a commercial non-entity. Possibly having a 'offensive' cover didn't help...so we include for your delectation a choice of that, the replacement, and the rather groovy UK cover: can't be bad! Russell, post-Mad Dogs And Englishmen a bona fide superstar, purchased the band's unreleased second album and released it on his own Shelter Records, to rather better sales. Here once more is this amazing lost gem, intensified in Rev Ola style, and ready to work it's magic! A great-lost psychedelic nugget by one of the major rock superstars! Wonderfully re-mastered in the most painstaking RevOla way and with the usual amazing RevOla packaging with very special notes!

Aux 88
S-T
PS, US If anyone mistakes their live show as a scaled down electronic hip hop oriented Parliament show, well, you're not too far off the mark as Aux 88 is one of the few groups who remember that techno has its roots in the hip hop of pioneers like Afrika Bambaataa, Planet Patrol & Newcleus. They tour actively & circle the globe in their hunt for new converts to their futuristic message.

Badgerlore
We Are All Hopeful Farmers, We Are All Scared Rabbits
PS, US BADGERLORE is the great tribal council of the so-called "Freak Folk" movement. The supergroup features Rob Fisk (DEERHOOF, 7-YEAR RABBIT CYCLE) and Ben Chasny (SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE, COMETS ON FIRE), with Tom Carter (CHARALAMBIDES), Pete Swanson (YELLOW SWANS), Glen Donaldson (BLITHE SONS, JEWELED ANTLER) and Liz Harris (GROUPER). Together they proceed with masterful nuance and inexorable tension; "We Are All Hopeful Farmers, We Are All Scared Rabbits" is the sound of effigy mounds slowly rousing from prehistoric slumber.

Baird, Megan
Waltz of the Tennis
PS, US Folks, this 7" is going to be very limited / please order right away! Member of THE ESPERS, this 7" is the first recording by Baird under her own name. Side A is a graceful and bittersweet cover of the under-appreciated 60's folksters Fraser and Debolt's classic. For the B-side, she recorded an a capella version "Dear Companion"-an aching lament sung "in the style of the chapel," whispers its way into your soul.

Bates, Martyn
Imagination Feels Like Poison
PS, US 1st U.S. issue of a full length solo lp by the stunniing vocalist & founding member of EYELESS IN GAZA. Originally released in 1997, it is primarily a collection of songs that are brightly bittersweet, conjuring up ghostly & vivid invocations of folk/psych. Voice, and suprisingly, banjo are the principal instruments that carry the music, fleshed out by the inventive use of Autoharp, percussion, whistles & pump organ.

Beatnik Filmstars
Shenaniganism (Tape Hiss & Other Imperfections)
PS, UK Beatnik Filmstars return with their eighth full length album, and this one is really something else. More 'Odd-Pop' sure! The group recorded a new album ('If We Did That Then...') at the end of last year, but in typical Beatnik fashion, decided to record another more Lo-Fi one straight away, in the space of two weeks, despite not having any songs. So everything you hear on this album was written and recorded in a two week period in February (the other new Mid-Fi album will be released later...). As usual everything was self recorded in their homes, on a variety of recording equipment, from plain old cassette to 8 Track. No computers were allowed anywhere near the music... Some journalists will slate the record for it's under-produced sound, but Beatnik Filmstars hate the over polished sheen on modern pop music. If this group, nicknamed the 'British GBV' really are the 'British GBV' then this album must surely be their 'Bee Thousand'. Fans of eccentric British pop music will love this album. Imagine a Lo-Fi Kinks, with a hint of The Fall at their most melodic, with Smiths style humour, and Syd Barrett conducting. Fans of the group's earlier albums 'Phase 3' and 'In Hospitalable' will love this record. New fans will be delighted with this collection of songs. This album should be the soundtrack to your summer. Only you can make it so...The first 500 copies all come with a one of a kind hand made booklet, wrapped in a printed Tracing Paper sleeve, packaged in a jewel case with a yellow tray. Some recent quotes about the Beatnik Filmstars: Screwball, infectious and ablaze with more hooks than a Japanese deep sea fishing trawler.More deranged episodes than an acid flashback resulting from a bad trip. Wonky pop with Investing mock Stones and Cockney Rebel harmonies aplenty, the warming glow of the barbed fuzzy felt like West Coast fizz pop. Delicious, dinky and distracted, the trip like laid back kookiness seductively subtly evoking elements of Bacharach. A spliff smoking day-glo kaleidoscopic tapestry lysergic enhanced celestial honey crusted waltz nuzzling snow baked gem.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (B.R.M.C.)
Baby 81
PS, US New album. AVERSION: "Seemingly inventing its bad-trip acid blues as it cuts through Baby 81, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club staggers through an array of dark, dingy blues. "American X" melds dingy, shoegazing guitar tones with guitar solos that worm their way into the center of your mind. "Cold Wind" and "Took Out a Loan" grab sleazy modern blues riffs -- think Primal Scream or The Soledad Brothers -- and toss them into a bottomless pit of shadowy production that brings out their roadhouse sleaze. Other tracks divert from the hard-edged blues to return to the band's classic Psychocandy-influenced soundscapes, as "666 Conducer" and "Berlin" take a break from the Delta inspirations to revert to the murky rock'n'roll of the band's Take Them On, On Your Own (2003, Virgin)."

Blow, The
Poor Aim: Love Songs (reissue)
PS, US "Poor Aim: Love Songs" is resilient electro-pop music that can be lovingly devoured by people of all ages and coolness factors. Already, the songs have fallen into a beloved repeat-play position in many a heart (and cell phone, as ring tones!). In their experiment, the two challenged each other with stringent requirements: JONA insisted that the rhythms couldn't be redundant; KHAELA guaranteed that the lyrics held sentences worth repeating. They succeeded. The songs are catchy as hell, and rise to meet all of the duo's snobby music standards. With sing-along-when-you-think-you're-alone types of refrains, it's as if the oldies station on the car stereo is playing at the same time as the urban party music station, with the occasional interfering sonic sway of an eighties keyboard refrain. That mash of sounds would come closest to describing "Poor Aim's" productional pitch, the sound of feeling fun and desperate and bravely romantically unsuccessful all at once; easy listening for difficult feelings.

Boonaraaas!!!
5 Steps Ahead
PS, US While most musical groups are taking two steps back, their thrust is most definitely forward. They bash out their heart & soulpoppin' sonic nuggets using vintage equipment but the noise they make is very much NOW! A treat for the ears & the eyes, no matter what your persuasion. Trich's sassy singing & bass attitude along w/ Christina's command of the big beat provides a rockin' solid foundation. Laura's Danelectro action blends w/ Tine's rhythm licks to create a fuzz-infused wall of sound that is so direct that you'll wonder what the heck just hit you.

Cabot, Sebastian
Sebastian Cabot, Actor... Bob Dylan, Poet
PS, UK Beloved London-born character actor Sebastian Cabot made a career out of playing the terribly proper British gentleman. With a well-groomed tidy beard, a distinct upper crust accent, and a weight of more than 250 pounds, he projected an image of kindness and refinement and managed to appear both cuddly and stuffy at the same time. As the star of The Time Machine, Johnny Tremain, Ivanhoe, and Kismet, he is best perhaps remembered by all those from 5 to 50 as the omniscient 'Narrator' in Walt Disney's series of 'Winnie The Pooh' movies, and as Bagheera in The Jungle Book. The title says it all really: Sebastian Cabot tackles the Bob Dylan songbook on this startling relic from the anything-goes psychedelic era; with his half-spoken, half-sung baritone vocals and erudite British manner, Cabot certainly puts an utterly unique spin on favorites like "It Ain't Me, Babe," "All I Really Want to Do" and "Like a Rolling Stone", an excellent look at the high vs. low culture debates of the 1960s that wanted to in effect "promote" Dylan and others from vulgar "songwriters" to "poets". The fact that en route, Cabot outdoes both William Shatner AND Leonard Nimoy in the 'Golden Throats' stakes is surely a bonus! A total classic, to be sure!

Callahan, Bill
Woke on a Whaleheart
PS, US New solo album from Smog mastermind Bill Callahan. PREFIX MAG: "Like Howe Gelb's 'Sno Angel Like You from last year, Whaleheart uses the conventions of traditional American genres to disguise slightly skewed songwriting. Strangely, the incorporation of these motifs doesn't render his work any more conventional. Instead, it's as if Callahan wandered into the wrong studio but taught the players his songs anyway. That sense of uneasy displacement, though, is exactly what makes Woke on a Whaleheart a fitting addition to Callahan's body of work."

Cold Bleak Heat
Simitu
PS, US "Simitu" is the second album from COLD BLEAK HEAT, the dream-team, east-coast avant jazz line-up of alto/tenor saxophonist PAUL FLAHERTY (DREAM/AKTION UNIT), drummer CHRIS CORSANO (VAMPIRE BELT, SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE), trumpeter GREG KELLEY (NMPERIGN, HEATHEN SHAME), and acoustic bassist MATT HEYNER (NO NECK BLUES BAND, TEST). While explosive as their 2005 debut, "Simitu" brings a melancholic, even sensitive feel to these improvisations. Yet, no need to worry about these four wipin' tears on their sleeves. CBH wages between the melodic centers/ghostly solos of Flaherty/Kelley and loose, downhill, free blow outs you'd expect, all while mainting the grand swell of a hardcore jazz symphony. Even as complex and multi-paced beats sink into bowed-drones and vocal hollers, focused lyricism remains the returning leader. Features liner notes and drawings by Christina Carter (CHARALAMBIDES).

Sensuous
PS, US With Sensuous, Cornelius further explores the dazzling atmospherics he developed on Point. It's a disciplined sound that's also wildly experimental, bursting with electronic pulsewaves, wood-grain acoustics, minimalist interludes and raw guitar freakouts. Released as an enhanced CD, it features a video for "Fit Song" and an interactive widget of panoramic Tokyo. (Everloving Records will also release the Sensuous DVD this fall with music videos for all 12 songs, plus more special features.) Sure, you could dance to it, but you could also throw on the headphones, sit back in your Eames chair and get whisked away to Keigo's multidimensional planet of sound. Courrier, Kevin
Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica
PS, US <p>In the spring of 1969, the inauspicious release of Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band's Trout Mask Replica, a double-album featuring 28 stream-of-consciousness songs filled with abstract rhythms and guttural bellows, dramatically altered the pop landscape. Yet even if the album did cast its radical vision over the future of music, much of the record's artistic strength is actually drawn from the past. This book examines how Beefheart's incomparable opus, an album that divided (rather than) united a pop audience, is informed by a variety of diverse sources. Trout Mask Replica is a hybrid of poetic declarations inspired by both Walt Whitman and the beat poets, the field hollers of the Delta Blues, the urban blues of Howlin' Wolf, the gospel blues of Blind Willie Johnson, and the free jazz of Ornette Coleman. This book illustrates how Trout Mask Replica was not so much an arcane specimen of the avant-garde, but rather a defiantly original declaration of the American imagination.

Damiak
Micalavera
PS, US Abe Dichi who's musical works are released via the Damaik alias is what you would classify as a true cosmopolitan musical entity. Spending most of his life moving between Mexico, Europe and the United States somehow gives his debut album "Micalavera" for n5MD an undercurrent of international, almost globalized, method. Add in the mixing and mastering of Mio and Valgeir Sigurdsson (Bjork, Mum, Bonnie "Prince" Billy) at Greehouse Studios in Iceland and this compounds the borderless sense of musical place that Micalavera embodies. The album title which roughly translates to "my skeleton" utilizes guitars, melodium, harmodium, violin, piano, field recordings, and live drums as well as electronic elements and edits that may recall similar moments to Sigurdsson's copatriots Mum and Blindfold or even to the more delicate moments of Dntel. Micalavera is an absorbing mix of many musical styles interwoven into a bright, affectionate, yet cohesive whole that features 12 vignettes of multicultural instrumentation, technique, and raw wondrous emotion.

Dinosaur Jr.
Beyond (Digipack Packaging)
PS, US Reunion album by all original members (J, Lou, and Murph, and all the accompanying disfunctional psychoses and neuroses) is one of the finest "comebacks" in the history of "comebacks". Fat Possum says (and we agree): "Beyond is a monster of form. From the staggeringly paced guitar spew that opens "Almost Ready" to classic soft/throb dynamism of "What If I Knew," Beyond is an exquisite slab of pure Dinosaur Jr. It's hard to understand the alchemical relationships that exist within certain bands. Some groups can change line-ups without anyone noticing. But that was never really the case with Dinosaur Jr. The pieces that fell away over the years were missed. But now they have all been collected together in one place. For how long no one can say. So just dig it while it is. Because Beyond is beautiful."

Keepsake
PS, US Linda Draper's much anticipated fifth studio long player, "Keepsake" brings you along for 10 beautifully crafted songs - it continues where her last LP, 2005's "One Two Three Four" (produced by Kramer) left off. The album marks her first self-produced effort, along with co-producer Major Matt Mason (Adam Green, Kimya Dawson, Jeffrey Lewis etc.) and was recorded at Olive Juice Music Studios in New York City. The CD presents Linda in an intimate setting accompanied throughout by stand-up bass, piano, violin, cello, slide guitar, touches of percussion and xylophone - the focus always being the pure beauty of Draper's vocal performance. "A shining light of excellence...a delightful voice that immediately enchants." (Tasty, UK)

Duncan, Paul
Above the Trees
PS, US Paul Duncan, a Texan now in Brooklyn, constructed his first two records homemade studios. His music has always been marked by the unique combination of traditional instruments - guitar, pedal steel, drums, banjo, strings, glockenspiel, piano, horns - and confident exploration of synthesis and noise. This was the essence of 2003's To An Ambient Hollywood and 2005's Be Careful What You Call Home, both released on Hometapes, both critically acclaimed, and both built from the ground up. Above The Trees breaks rank from its two predecessors both in impetus and craftsmanship. The album, grown of the ether of experience rather than a catalogue of strict memory, was written in a short three months and recorded in an even shorter week What may be Paul's most musically straightforward record yet may also be his most psychologically complex. Through a turbulent and sensual process, he takes into account the intangible - the ebb and flow above the trees - and translates it all through people and the instruments in their hands. Paul traveled to Chicago to record Above The Trees with engineer Tim Iseler at Soma EMS. Something came to life during that hot week in July, and with the help of many old and new friends; the record features performances by Adam Wills (Rhys Chatham's Essentialist, Bear In Heaven), Christopher Bear (Grizzly Bear), David Daniell (San Agustin, Rhys Chatham's Essentialist), Doug McCombs (Tortoise, Brokeback). Fred Lonberg-Holm (Terminal 4, Lightbox Orchestra), Joe Stickney (Rhys Chatham's Essentialist, Bear in Heaven), Josh Berman (Rob Mazurek's Exploding Star Orchestra), Ken Champion (Jim O'Rourke), Nate Lepine (Cursive, Smog), Nate Swanson, and Tim Daisy (The Vandermark 5). For Above The Trees, the studio became Paul's home, and these players his visitors. The result may be the most heartfelt and sonically exciting record in Paul's infinitely expanding catalogue of sound.

Electric Soft Parade
No Need to be Down-Hearted
PS, US US debut for multi-instrumentalist brothers, who are also known as The Brakes, and compared to everyone from The Band to Stereolab, with a menagerie of lo-fi folk, thumping blues and free-form psych-rock, whilst always retaining a pop shimmer. MOJO: "Full of regret, hard-won wisdom and DIY pop artistry No Need To Be Downhearted transcends bog-standard indie to build a world of sophisticated melody and ingenious arrangements, encompassing Broadway gumption, Tahiti 80-style sunshine pop, and exquisitely lachrymose minimalism. Mutes brass, Ben Folds Joanna, ELO synth showers and Left Banke harmonies belie the record's home-studio genesis, plonking E.S.P. in the van of a modest progressive pop renaissance recently hinted at by Field Music and The Earlies."

Forest Giants
Things We Do When We're Bored
PS, UK Forest Giants record, produce and write everything themselves. They design their own sleeves. They arrange their own gigs. They make their records in rehearsal rooms and people's houses. There are no publicists, no producers, no managers, no a&r, no agents, no drugs, no nothing. In the world of popular music, this is what it means to be truly lo-fi... This is the Forest Giants third and last album. It's a double album actually. The record is full of pop songs, and we think it sounds a bit like a cross between New Order, Galaxie 500, Smog and some other good bands.. On the record there's a song about going to the dog races, and a song about getting an operation at Christmas. There's a song about giving someone a trumpet for their birthday, and a song about religious cults. There's a song about insomnia and a song about Peter Perrett. Oh, and before we forget, there are lots of songs about relationship breakdowns, without which no Forest Giants album would ever be complete.

Freelovebabies
Home Improvement for Condemned Buildings
PS, UK This is Will Carruthers' 2nd solo LP as the freelovebabies, and while he's done much of the work, he is anything but alone. The blood, sweat and tears of people he's held in high regard over the years both personally and professionally fuel this record. It's no secret where Will has come from and where he's been, his contribution to a handful of influential Spacemen 3 records and the seminal debut from Spiritualized, Laser Guided Melodies are all part of his personal history. Eyes forward and the present very much at hand, this record stands on it's own two feet and commands that you remember; the man makes music every bit as much as the music makes the man. 'Sky Blue Feeling' settles on high, with that signature bass billowing down and crystalline guitar licks piercing through like so many shafts of light. A whisper soft bit of drumming and otherworldliness bring the opening track to a gentle close. 'On The Drip' is the most nostalgic offering on the record and is the most obvious show of Willie's proud musical past. Rooted in the earliest and most revered days of Spiritualized, it is both a tribute and a show of how many aces he's got up his sleeve. The vocals are raw and raucous, the bass climbs high, spurred on by an unrelenting beat, as he begs 'Gimme something fuckin' new." Fragile is the only way to describe 'Too Soon to Say Goodbye' it stirs with a haunting intensity, lone piano melody, and an achingly strung out vocal that bears a Lennon-esque quality at his most shattered. Freelovebabies also features Mark Refoy of Slipstream (ex Spiritualized), Jonny Mattock (ex Spacemen 3/Spiritualized drummer), and Kevin Cowen (Spacemen 3/Darkside).

Gainsbourg, Charlotte
5:55 [US editon w/bonus tracks]
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Even though 5:55 isn't technically Charlotte Gainsbourg's first solo album (that would be Charlotte for Ever, which was released when she was 13), it is her first solo album as an adult and, with the help of a dream team of collaborators, it's a fittingly sophisticated set that touches on her father Serge's brilliantly louche, literate pop without being overshadowed by it. Air's Jean-Benoît Dunckel and Nicolas Godin (who paid tribute to Serge Gainsbourg particularly well on 10,000 Hz Legend's "Wonder Milky Bitch") wrote 5:55's delicate music, while Jarvis Cocker and the Divine Comedy's Neil Hannon penned its lyrics. This mingling of French and English influences is mirrored in Gainsbourg's subtly expressive voice and accent, which provides the perfect complement to the album's lush sounds and vivid imagery..."

Grails
Burning Off Impurities
PS, US Following soon after the critically praised "Black Tar Prophecies" collection on IMPORTANT RECORDS, Portland, Oregon's GRAILS return with their first proper studio album since 2004 release of Redlight. "Burning Off Impurities" - their debut for TEMPORARY RESIDENCE LTD. - makes good on the promise of those past releases in delivering an album that not only thrusts the group to new heights, but also pushes the instrumental rock genre forward for the first time in nearly a decade. An increased interest in psychedelic, ambient and world musics is most likely to blame for Grails' exploration of the lesser-traveled paths of modern music. Influenced in equal parts by ASH RA TEMPEL, ERKIN KORAY, POPOL VUH, BLACK SABBATH, LED ZEPPELIN, and dozens others, this is very likely the closest Grails will ever get to making a classic rock record; the kind of sprawling masterpiece that you savor for years before passing it on to your younger brother so he can repeat the process.

Johnson, Calvin And The Sons of The Soil
S/T
PS, US In 2003, K recording artists KHAELA MARICICH (THE BLOW) AND JASON ANDERSON had a vision. "What if Calvin Johnson played all his best songs from over the years, with a band of real music-making people?" This was their vision, and they decided to make it happen. Jason formed a band of other K music stalwarts that included KYLE FIELD (LITTLE WINGS) on bass with ADAM FORKNER (YUME BITSU, VERSION) and Jason sharing the guitar and drum playing duties. Dubbed by Jason the SONS OF THE SOIL, they set out to modernize the primitive. Khaela designed a graphic image that perfectly captured the Sons of the Soil's transcendental vibe. A tour was arranged that crossed paths with other fine Olympia types, including REBECCA PEARCY and MIRAH. Songs were chosen that spanned the years and various combos, including songs originally recorded by HALO BENDERS ("Love Travels Faster"), DUB NARCOTIC SOUND SYSTEM ("Booty Run") and the GO TEAM ("Sand"). Rehearsals commenced, and then it was off across the Western United States for a rollicking, rockin' good time.

Knack, The
Time Time Time
PS, UK The Knack are best remembered today as the band Paul Gurvitz was in before he formed hard rock trio Gun of "Race With The Devil" fame. However, their music is much more deserving than that simple footnote. They were originally known as The Londoners, a moniker they adopted whilst paying their beat group dues in the clubs of Germany in the early 60s. Upon returning to the UK in 1965 and changing their name to the rather hipper The Knack (after the recently released Richard Lester film), they recorded half a dozen singles for Decca and Piccadilly including the mod R&B ravers "She Ain't No Good", "Time Time Time" and "Stop!". Their final single, "(Man From The) Marriage Guidance And Advice Bureau", featured a more mature acoustic sound, which nodded towards both The Kinks and the impending psychedelic explosion. They split in 1967 but not before cutting the superb pop-psych tune "Light On The Wall" which remained unreleased until it was included on a volume of the psych compilation series Incredible Sound Show Stories under the name Happy Vegetable. Gun debuted by performing a version of the same song at a BBC session just weeks later. First time on CD and produced with the full involvement of Paul Gurvitz himself! Features all six Knack singles plus the impossibly rare Londoners single released on the Star Club label! Expanded with two unreleased tracks and features brand new liner notes by Stefan Granados and tons of fab memorabilia courtesy of the band!

LeGrand, Michel
Eva / A Time For Loving: OST's
PS, UK A combination of two extremely rare Michel Legrand film soundtracks. His score for Joseph Losey¹s important film "Eva" (that famously starred Jeanne Moreau) is amongst his greatest, most original work sharing the charm and imagination of the works for which he is best known: "The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg" and "Windmills Of Your Mind" which propelled Legrand to international superstardom. On "Eva" Legrand¹s music is complimented by Billie Holiday ('Willow Weep For Me' and 'Loveless Love') and Tony Middleton that are used so effectively. "A Time For Loving", restored to the catalogue for the first time in decades has a more romantic Parisian style and is boosted by songs by the great Dusty Springfield ('The Sea And Sky') and Matt Monroe ('A Place In Paris'). Eva (1962) Introduction / Main Title / At The Bar / Water Ski / One Morning In Roma / Willow Weep For Me (Sung By Billie Holiday Vocal) / Eva's Room / Tivian Visits Eva / Eva And Tivian / Eva And Francesca / Eva, Francesca And Tivian / A Hotel In Venice / The Wedding / Dumped Tivian / Loveless Love (Sung By Billie Holiday) / Epilogue / Finale / Adam And Eva (Sung By Tony Middleton) A Time For Loving (Paris Was Made For Lovers) (1971) / Paris Was Made For Lovers (Sung By Michel Legrand) / The Street Where They Live / 1937-Where Love Begins / A Place In Paris (Sung By Matt Munro) / Do You Come Here Often? / Concerto For Cabs / Pavanne For People / The Sea And Sky (Sung By Dusty Springfield) / In Love, In Normandy / old lovers never die, they simply fade away/ 1942-Where Love...Ends / Fanfare For A Christmas Oyster / Paris Was Made For Lovers (Sung By Michel Legrand And Chorus).

Mary Onettes, The
S/T
PS, SWEDEN Long awaited debut album from Sweden's best new band. These ten songs sound somewhat like a modern version of A-ha dressed in black mixed with early The Jesus and Mary Chain on an arena. We love every little second of it. It took them two years and three labels to get here, but if that's what they needed in order to produce what must be one of the finest Swedish debut album ever, it was worth all the wait. Everything about this album is just perfect. From the confident and obvious choice of simple calling it The Mary Onettes to the epic artwork. The classic ten songs format where each song has it's obvious place on the album. First-rate songs all the way dressed in production perfectly balancing between futuristic and timeless. Biography Although development are crucial for a band one thing have remained the same, the songs. The band revolves around Philip Ekströms song writing and although some songs have been stripped down, rebuilt or even thrown away they have kept coming. Things started happen for The Mary Onettes in spring 2004, signing with a brand new label the future couldn't look brighter. Six months later the band lost the deal without being given the chance to release anything. Eight months of despair followed until Sony/BMG decided to sign up the band up for an EP. The debut was released may 2005 and didn't make big fuzz to the main crowd, although it got great reviews. A couple of months later the band found themselves without a recording contract once again. Instead of splitting up or getting depressed they started building a music studio and plans took form to start an own label and release everything themselves. A demo cd to Swedish indie label Labrador changed those plans. For the first time the band felt that they had a label that understood them and their music. Signing for a full length album in spring 2006 led to more frequent studio sessions and recording in their new built studio in Gothenburg, Sweden. Humans don't believe in stagnation, it's in our nature to develop, evolve and invent. The Mary Onettes started out in 2000 and when looked at in retrospect, many things have changed. Starting out as a passionate, yet naive rock band from a small town and therefore a lot to prove, the band have managed to stay together because of their love for music and each other. It takes time for a band to develop a sound and to create that special bond between members in a rock group. Six years on, that development is still in progress.

Merzbow & Carlos Giffoni
Synth Destruction
PS, US Over 60 minutes of total analog destruction by noise king Merzbow and Brooklyn noise boss Carlos Giffoni, This live collaboration was recorded during Giffoni's Synth Destruction Japan Tour in September of 2006. This is Sound Totalism and is as heavy as it comes: totally brutal, totally ugly, totally beautiful, totally intense, totally classic, totally analog, total synth and total destruction. Intense artwork by Jenny Akita. Author, activist, painter and sound artist Masami Akita had been at the foreground of experimental music for over 25 years. Inspired by psychedelic rock, free jazz, early electronic composition as well the physical arts, especialy Kurt Schwitters' Merzbau, Masami Akita has created a musical language all his own. Carlos Giffoni, despite his young age, has been an in-demand Brooklyn collaborator for many years. He has worked with Jim O'Rourke, Thurston Moore, Nels Cline, Chris Corsano, Fe-Mail and many others. In 2005 he releases his first solo record titled Welcome Home on Important Records. This is Merzbow and Giffoni's first collaborative release.

Midnight Movies
Lion the Girl
PS, US Midnight Movies first made waves in 2004 with their eponymous debut, about which the LA Times called "undeniably cinematic". After a line-up change and a new label, they return with this release. The California landscape serves as a perfect backdrop for "Lion The Girl". The hypnotic vocals of Gena Olivier cut a seductive path through the layers of lovely psychedelic landscapes. The OC Weekly appropriately crowned Olivier with having "all the beauty and talent of a modern-day Grace Slick." Produced by Steve Fisk (Screaming Trees, Nirvana, Pell Mell). /// AVERSION: "Midnight Movies refines the spaced-out atmospheres of its self-titled debut (2004, Leftwing) and makes room for hooks and harmonics we'd expect from a super-modern guitar-pop band... Owing a little bit to The Jesus and Mary Chain and the faintest debt to Lush, Midnight Movies finds a rich, dense and compelling brand of twilight pop on Lion the Girl."

Wires Reply
PS, US The three members of NAMELESSNUMBERHEADMAN grew up together in a small town in Oklahoma, but the three of them (Jason Lewis, Andrew Sallee and Chuck Whittington) ultimately settled in Kansas City and have been playing, writing and recording as NNHM for about six years. Having released two prior full-length albums since July 2002 that have been received well, but it's with this ST. IVES release that they make their grand statement as artists. With "Wires Reply," they join the afternoon drive between your ears where Sparklehorse covers Skylarking in its entirety, where Pinetop Seven and Tortoise make 4-track tapes as teenagers, and The Notwist backs up Robert Pollard in the beautiful headspace of blissful lo-fi stereo. Cohesive in sound and vision, "Wires Reply" is a dream that doesn't jump around and confuse you, but calms and guides you through a hazy panoramic photograph. This is a balmy summer in Midwestern America. This is the smell of the trees and the street at the end of the longest days. This is a genuine, honest celebration but, all the same, it is fighting the sinking feeling that there is no one left to believe anymore. The guitars buzz. The drums crack. The mellotrons whir. The three sing at the top of their lungs. As with all St. Ives releases, "Wires Reply" is a VINYL LIMITED EDITION RELEASE (to just 300 copies). The artwork is lovingly hand-wrought by the band in a celebration of folk art and the return to care in record making.

Newsom, Joanna & The Ys Street Band
EP (ON SALE)
PS, US All new arrangements & performances of 2 already-classic Joanna songs & the debut of a brand-new song, its a solid short-play record at least & another inspiring slice of Newsom at best. PITCHFORK (Best New Music, 8.7 score): "You have to lower the stakes after an album like Ys, because you can't raise them. Joanna Newsom's follow-up is a lot less formally ambitious: A three-song quickie, with one new song and two old ones, recorded live in the studio with four members of her acoustic touring band. Of course, "less formally ambitious" on Newsom's scale is off the charts on virtually anyone else's..."

S-T
PS, US DAVID WINGO has been the soundtrack to Southern lives for years- literally. He framed the onscreen images w/ beautiful, complementary hitting all the right emotional notes. The songs are aural Polaroids of fleeting feelings, places, & people. Lushly evocative, these are moments in motion, breathing life into sepia-toned memories. Layers of guitars, keyboards, & sculpted sound samples wash over you.

Oliveros, Pauline
The Wanderer
PS, US The Wanderer is based on a single modal scale (B C# D D# E F# G#) and rhythmic modes based on a meter consisting of 3/4 and 3/8. Part I, Song, is intended to explore the unique resonant qualities of accordion reeds through long sounds. Subtle variations come about from differences in tuning and air pressure. Part II, Dance, demonstrates the sharp accenting power of the accordion bellows in a mixture of cross rhythms characteristic of jigs, reels, batucadas, Bulgars, klezmer forms, Cajun dances, and music of other diverse cultures. The Wanderer was composed in November, 1982 especially for the Springfield Accordion Orchestra, directed by Sam Falcetti. This recording documents The Wanderer's world premiere, as it was performed 27 January, 1983 at Marymount Manhattan Theatre. The orchestra consists of twenty accordions, two bass accordions, and five percussion, with Pauline Oliveros as soloist, Sam Falcetti conducting. Horse Sings From Cloud, written in 1975, is one of Oliveros' best known works. Like most of her Sonic Meditations, it can be performed vocally and/or instrumentally, solo or in collaboration. A solo version of Horse Sings From Cloud has been recorded on Accordion & Voice. An early version of the score reads, "Sustain a tone or sound until any desire to change it disappears. When there is no longer any desire to change the tone or sound, then change it." This time, Horse Sings From Cloud is performed in ensemble. Joining Pauline Oliveros on bandoneion are Heloise Gold on Harmonium, Julia Haines on accordion, and Linda Montano on concertina. This quartet version incorporates the microtonal differences in tuning of the selected instruments, creating shimmering reed sounds somewhat similar to the shimmering of a Balinese gamelan.

Oliveros, Pauline
Accordion & Voice
PS, US Pauline Oliveros (b. 1930) is an accordionist and composer who currently resides in Kingston, New York. Her instrument is tuned in Just Intonation and she often includes it in her meditative improvisational music. Her music is not meditative in the sense that it is intended for listening to while meditating, rather each piece is a form of meditation, such as her aptly titled Sonic Meditations. A central figure in post-war electronic art music, Oliveros is one of the original members of the San Francisco Tape Music Center (along with Morton Subotnick, Ramon Sender, Terry Riley, and Anthony Martin), which was the resource on the U.S. west coast for electronic music during the 1960s. The Center later moved to Mills College, where she was its first director, and is now called the Center for Contemporary Music. Oliveros often improvises with the Expanded Instrument System, an electronic signal processing system she designed, in her performances and recordings. "Accordion and Voice was the first of my recordings as a soloist. I was living in an A-frame house in a meadow just below Mount Tremper at Zen Mountain Center. I had a wonderful view of the graceful saddle mountain top. When away on a performance trip I would imagine the mountain as I played Rattlesnake Mountain. I followed the feelings and sensations of my many experiences of the mountain - the changing colors of the season, the breezes and winds blowing through the grasses and trees. Horse Sings From Cloud taught me to listen to the depth of a tone and to have patience. Rather than initiating musical impulses of motion, melody and harmony I wanted to hear the subtlety of a tone taking space and time to develop. The tones linger and resonate in the body, mind, instrument and performance space. My thanks to Important Music for bringing these pieces to be heard again." - Pauline Oliveros 2007

First Original Silence
PS, US A monster is born, a clash of the the titans! The new band of THURSTON MOORE (SONIC YOUTH), TERRIE EX (THE EX), JIM O'ROURKE, MATS GUSTAFSSON (THING), PALL NILSSEN-LOVE (THING), & MASSIMO PUPILLO (ZU). Recorded live on the OS Italian tour, September 2005 in Teatro Arisoto, Reggio Emilia, Italy, to be more specific. This is the first in a series of recordings from OS. Musically one can hear the obvious influences from early Sonic Youth & The Ex mixed with the Scandinavia free-jazz. But you can hear their many influences from Black Flag, to drone rock, to Albert Ayler, to Boredoms, to noise, punk, Dead C, Merzbow & 60s minimalism. This is 100% improvised rock. A monumental, raw and harsh beautiful out- rock masterpiece. Artwork by Kim Hiorthoy

Pandatone
Happy Together
PS, US Hello. Since Pandatone himself runs Music Related - the label this CD "Happy Together" appears on - he thought it was weird to write his own press blurb. So I was asked to write it. We're old friends by NYC standards, so I headed out to Queens to listen to the tracks and talk to him about making it. Upon arrival, I proceed to harass him about his apartment. (I always do this.) "You're 30 now. Don't you think it's time to stop living like you're in college?" "But I just got this cool paper shredder and humidifier," came his retort. We moved into the "studio," which is more like a storage space for boxes of CDs and cables than a studio - or even a bedroom. He started playing me Happy Together, but I had to almost immediately ask, "What's the deal? I thought you said you'd never release any Pandatone material on your own label?" He replied, "Yeah, shit is fucked like that. But listen to it anyway." I agreed... shit is fucked, and so I shut my yap. On the album, there are some very nice songs featuring female vocalist "Julliana Barwick" - uplifting numbers with deep production. Although slow in tempo, they are upbeat in spirit. Then there are tracks with male vocals that are much more melancholy. Pandatone tells me he doesn't write lyrics. The words are just the "shit in his head" when he hits record. Lucky for him, I think they work well together - almost playing out like shattered romance. It's been almost three years since his debut LP on Neo Ouija records. Besides the use of acoustic guitar, I'm not sure there are many similarities between this record and his debut. The influence of running Music Related is almost instantly apparent. His room is full of instruments now - from child-sized toys to a huge reel-to-reel tape deck. The Pandatone studio is the wrong environment for a clinical claustrophobic, but full of creative possibilities if you're the right type. It feels like this environment has been transferred into the songs for Happy Together. Pandatone's fascination with the actual sound of recording is plastered all over the album. Using lots of tape and background noise, he tries to bring out specific tones that are just too far gone to really be there. The influence of Shugo Tokumaru and the Boats is fairly noticeable - though not copied. The sound of NYC is in there too - with some tracks featuring an almost junktronic-type percussion. While the album plays and even after it ends, he is much more interested in talking about the artists who are working on stuff for Music Related than his own music, and I leave with a handful of CDs. Whether he likes comparisons or not, I would recommend Happy Together if you like Psapp, Müm, and Tujiko Noriko.

Part Chimp
CUP
PS, US Less than a year ago, PART CHIMP toured the United States bearing $99 guitars duct taped together, a ramshackle drumkit with pom poms, and stacks of junkyard amps...not really your optimum selection of rock gear. But, from the first click down on their octave pedals, Part Chimp laid into one of the most devastatingly awesome tours on which the MONITOR team has ever laid their eyes and ears. It was on this tour that we became aware that Part Chimp were the most under appreciated rock band active today. Who else plays this loud, with this much fury!?!? Part Chimp continues their course with their new Monitor release "CUP." A compilation only available in North America, "CUP" contains the new single "New Cross", rarities, alternative versions of past tracks, a previously unreleased cover of the BEATLES' "Wild Honey Pie", and two music videos. The album, just like the live show, is raw, raucous, and will just as easily rip your head off if the volume is adjusted correctly.

Pollard, Robert
Silverfish Trivia
PS, US New album from GBV/Budweiser guy. RETRO-LO-FI: "On first glance, Bob's new EP Silverfish Trivia looks like it contains nearly as many instrumentals as it does actual songs, but it plays through like a singular twenty-minute piece. A highly abstract and slightly more mellow piece to be sure, but it's a whole and needs to be treated as such... Silverfish Trivia is a short wonder of a record."

Proem
A Permanent Solution
PS, US Richard Bailey and n5MD team up yet again, this time to release his 6th Proem studio album "A Permanent Solution". There is an undeniably classic IDM vibe to "A Permanent Solution", one that has been missing from the genre for some time. Ever present are the moments you have come to know, feel and respect of Bailey's music. However, Bailey tears the seam on the bag of atmospherics he's been hiding and pours the contents like thick syrup over every track. The Proem beatwork is intact but there is a much heavier emphasis on letting the backdrop propel the songs forward. There are people still superfluously creating this style of electronica but not with as much depth and style as Bailey projects into his music. "A Permanent Solution" is a perfect jump forward while still keeping true to the "Proem sound".

Pterodactyl
S/T
PS, US The songs on this record range from incessant and infectious ("Polio") to sparse and spacious ("Three Succeed") to epic and redemptive ("Esses"). Combining a noisy post-punk palette with adventurous, arresting lead vocals and harmonies, PTERODACTYL'S first full-length offers up a compellingly catchy, scratchy sound that is not easily forgotten. In 2006 Village Voice music critic Robert Christgau caught a performance of "Polio" at the tail end of Pterodactyl's set and ranked it the best "tail end" in a month of New York live shows, writing: "A 20-minute Dungen song deserved its 10-minute flute solo. The unknown Pterodactyl repeated the same climactic six-note riff for six minutes. This was so much better than that flute solo."

Section 25
Communicants
PS, UK NTSC Region 0 DVD. Multi-region format. LTM is proud to announce a new live DVD Communicants from cult post-punk group Section 25, previously with Factory Records, whose brand new studio album Part-Primitive is released in May 2007. Formed by Blackpool brothers Larry and Vin Cassidy in 1978, Section 25 gigged extensively with Joy Division, A Certain Ratio, Durutti Column, New Order and the original Factory stable, completed two North American tours, and recorded keynote albums Always Now (1981) and From The Hip (1984). Their sublime proto-techno single Looking From A Hilltop remains an oft-sampled club classic. Although Section 25 disbanded in 1986, core members Larry (bass/vocals), Vin (drums) and Jenny Cassidy (keyboards/vocals) regrouped in 2001, joined by guitarist Ian Butterworth (ex Tunnelvision) and multi-instrumentalist and engineer Roger Wikeley. Although work on the new album was set back by the untimely death of Jenny Cassidy in November 2004, the group began gigging again in May 2006 across Europe. Communicants offers a professional multi-camera shoot of their triumphant homecoming show at Blackpool Empress Ballroom in October 2006 (as guests of New Order), as well as bonus performances from Brussels, Dublin, Athens, Paris, London and Poulton. The 70 minute DVD also features interview material with Larry and Vin, and footage shot on the road. As well as SXXV classics Dirty Disco, Friendly Fires, New Horizon and Looking From A Hilltop, new songs Gene and Can't Let Go are also featured. Section 25 will be promoting Communicants with further live shows, including an American tour in May 2007, and will also be following their memorable appearance in the 2006 documentary Shadowplayers with spots in upcoming documentaries on Factory (BBC4) and Joy Division.
