Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

The Quarter After "Changes Near" CD (Committee To Keep Music Evil) $12.00
New album from psych-pop kingpins. Lead by the two Campanella siblings- songwriter/singer Dominic & guitarist/producer Robert. Dom's prominent twelve-string Rickenbacker & rich melodies set the tone for songs that range from dense guitar-driven psychedelic attacks to further explorations into down home country in the grand tradition of West Coast rock. They are joined by a collection of LA musicians including friend & mentor Ric Menck (Velvet Crush, the Tyde), Matthew Sweet, Miranda Lee Richards, Mara Keagle, Eric Heywood (Son Volt), Christoff W. Certik (Winter Flowers), Kirk Hellie (Meow Meow), Probyn Gregory (Wondermints, Brian Wilson Band), & Matthew Sigley (Lovetones, Daytime Frequency). POPMATTERS: "It is a fine line between derivation and influence. The work of Quarter After exhibited on this perfectly transcendent piece of retro pop easily places them closer to the latter. As his swollen list of credits attests, Rob’s skills as a producer are unsurpassed. The bright, harmonized, richly dynamic sheen on this record is not a parody of groundbreaking ‘60s sound, but a shining example of it still vibrating in the 21st century."

Boy Omega "Hope On the Horizon" CD (Acuarela) $13.50
Things get a little more ornate and orchestrated on Boy Omega’s latest, now available Stateside from Spain’s Acuarela label. However it gets here we’re happy! Trading in those electronic beats for strings, horns and pianos BO maestro Martin Henrik Gustafsson’s intimate songcrafting still recalls Conor Oberst and Elliot Smith, but this time out the songs are awash in a Sufjan Stevens-esque grandeur unheard on previous efforts, thanks in part to the Boy Omega Orchestra (Per-Ola Eriksson, Karin Wiberg and Andreas Lassus), and guest–appearances by members of Tiger Lou, Audrey and Irene. Sound samples available on our front page.

In Case You Missed It, Angie's PLG Sale CD Of The Week

Bettie Serveert "Private Suit" CD $8.00
Serene, sonic loveliness from this critically acclaimed Dutch pop outfit, Private Suit showcases the glorious maturation of a pop band. Undeniably sultry and seductive, warm and waltzing, Bettie Serveert (teamed up with English producer John Parish) have created a masterpiece. Stunning production, Carol Van Dyk's smoky vocals and the band's shimmering, strummy avant-pop, slinky rock, and gracefully faceted folk have never sounded better.

Bettie Serveert "Log 22" CD $8.00

Pairing the elegant and accomplished beauty of its predecessor Private Suit, with the energy and reckless abandon of their classic debut Palomine, Log 22 is a veritable sonic trip and probably their best album yet!

Alaska In Winter
Dance Party in the Balkans
PS, US Art student Brandon Bethancourt takes much of his influence from all his early years of growing up in the (American) South West, immersed in the musical low-rider culture of Sante Fe, New Mexico, as well as a slight Arabian influence on the part of his parents & their Byzantine church music. He has recently toured the US & Canada w/ Beirut.

Ambarchi, Oren
In the Pendulum's Embrace
PS, US NOW ON VINYL!!! He continues his otherworldly investigations w/ a kind of dark twin to his landmark "Grapes From The Estate". Despite the use of glass harmonica, strings, bells, piano, percussion & guitars, it's startling that the world created is still unmistakably his own & that there is such a cohesion of vision throughout the 3 lengthy pieces.

Am-Boy
Clayton's Hideout
PS, US Last copies. Forrest Wolf returns with his sophomore effort, a 10 track nugget of kaleidoscopic melodies. Perpetuating his trademark "Walt Disney World on acid" brand of nostalgic electronics, this particular journey is a limited vinyl-only affair. The synths have sheen, the reverb is whale-like at times, and the rhythms are programmed simply and effortlessly to lock down the pace. Am-Boy maps out a gauzy route through his own daydream nation, inviting you to get lost for 35 minutes and ease away from reality. Very spliff friendly. Not a departure, but an upgrade from his debut, Floridian, this Long Player proves the songs to be better and frankly, more psychedelic. The moods vacillate between the up tempo chime of opener "Clayton's Hideout" to the slack-keyed wooziness of "I am boy." "Ready to Go Home" and "Glass Wails" represent two of the best tracks Am-boy has given us with their clipclop rhythms, warm bass lines and hallucinatory toppings. The 3 tracks closing out side two are an ambient postcard from the depths of wonderment, awaiting the perfect science fiction images to accompany the walk home. Warm, rich and a bit twisted, Clayton's Hideout is a charming addition to the growing Wobblyhead catalog.

Bearsuit
OH:IO
PS, US Fresh out of hiding, six piece Bearsuit have a whole heap of brand-spanking-new shonky pop songs replete with glitter, knives, smiles, shouts and catchy choruses to make you feel happy sad and slightly scared at the same time. Subjects include terrible bloodthirsty gangs of tiny children, getting jiggy with dinosaurs, fist-fighting your younger self, signing up for intergalactic warfare, finding love, the colonization of the solar system, the search for tangible proof of a 'soul', and a dirty old crow: you know: the usual shit. Already championed by the likes of Steve Lamacq, Huw Stevens, Phill Jupitus, XFM, the NME, Artrocker and Plan B. With a live show including flute, guitars, keyboards, samples, cornet, singing, bells, accordion, theremin, drums, oh and a keytar plus a variety of outlandish stage gear - blood soaked prom dresses, marching bands, 'nurses of death' outfits, spacemen and silver bear-botwear to name but a few - Bearsuit are certainly a band to catch live! here's some nice review quotes what people have said. '...fun, fresh and exciting listen...shout their wonder from the rooftops' --NME.

Beatundercontrol
Cosmic Repackage
PS, UK Since bursting into the world in the late 70s as a punk-driven bass evangelist, Sweden's Ulf "Rockis" Ivarrson has since been on a relentless voyage of musical discovery while paying his dues to pay the rent. Through early 80s bands like The Quiet, playing the blues with the Eivon Boogie Band, backing up Swedish guitar hero Clas Yngstrom in his group Sky High or a host of sessions, Ulf nurtured a growing desire to uncork an inner vision which sounded nothing like any of these lucratively-popular positions. After a stint with world music-techno marauders Hedningama, where he pioneered a new instrument called the bass mandora, Ulf took the plunge in the late '90s and started Beatundercontrol. Conventional song structures went out the window as he explored his fixations with the mighty dub, noise and experimental music that knew no boundaries, emerging with widely acclaimed first album The Introduction in 2003. 'Instead of writing banal three-minute songs with mindless expressions and meaning, I rather try to challenge myself through textures, noises and basslines,' he explains. This philosophy is explored with often stunning results on Ulf's second Beatundercontrol album, Cosmic Repackage, a colossal aural menagerie of space-jazz brass themes and solo flights, subterranean pulses and darkhued banks of strings which dart between European avant textures to late 60s hypno-drone alchemists the Third Ear Band. It's a heady brew, ranging from the nocturnal back alley jazz of "Neighbourterror Blues" to the intense freeform scattershots and coruscating atmospherics of "Departure". If dub's shadow looms over the album, notably on tracks like the bottomless fizz-bombs of Interruption, it steps out and flashes its glorious sonic stiffie on the alien skank of "Subversion Dub", albeit lashed with dissonance and howling winds. From punk rock to the outer limits, Ulf Ivarrson has cause to celebrate quite a remarkable musical journey and does so with one of the year's most intoxicatingly uncompromising aural statements.

Black Fortress of Opium
S-T
PS, US Inspired by the lore surrounding a little town in Turkey , Afyonkarahisar, which translates into "Black Fortress of Opium." Their self-titled debut album was recorded in Brooklyn, NY by Martin Bisi (IGGY POP, SONIC YOUTH, DRESDEN DOLLS) over the course of seven months in 2007. The 10 original tracks are often reminiscent of Middle or Near Eastern sounds channeled through American folk instrumentation (mandolin, banjo) as well as e-bowed electric guitars, with female vocals that alternate between powerful and soulful to soft and mournful.

Black Keys, The
Attack & Release
PS, US New album! ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Evidently, their 2004 mini-masterpiece Rubber Factory represented the crest of their brutal blues wave, as ever since singer/guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney have receded from the gnarled precision of their writing and the big, brutal blues thump, they started to float into the atmosphere with their 2006 EP-length tribute to Junior Kimbrough, Chulahoma. Ever since then, the Black Keys have emphasized waves of sound over either ballast or song, something that should be evident from the choice of Danger Mouse as the producer of Attack & Release, a seemingly unlikely pair that found common ground in the form of Ike Turner. Danger Mouse worked with the rock & roll renegade when he produced the Gorillaz's Demon Days and the plan was to have the Black Keys cut an album with Ike but Turner's death turned the project into a full-fledged Keys album. That's the official story, anyway..."

Borko
Celebrating Life
PS, GERMANY VINYL VERSION!!!
Morr-080
LP
$15.00

Borko
Celebrating Life
PS, GERMANY Celebrating Life is the first full-length release from Icelandic artist Björn Kristiansson and reflects a life in music full of experiences. The oldest of these eight tracks are up to six years old, and Morr label-head Thomas Morr has been their eager and attentive listener. How does a punch in the belly sound? Kristiansson has written a song about it called "Spoonstabber," where you'll hear an elegiac Tetris, encapsulated by delaying beats, tumbling samples, guitars, trumpets and a melody that goes on for an eternity. Borko - who also works as a musician for film and theater as well as a music teacher at a primary school in Reykjavik - expresses melancholy and nostalgia through rhythm-machines. His songs can reach dramatic heights with climbing melodies, as well as play up the stoicism of repetition and modulation. His work at the laptop and mixing desk live on stage have helped fuel his inspiration as well as childhood prog rock LPs, Jim O'Rourke's ear and electronica's warmth.

Bryars, Gavin
Hommages
PS, UK Remastered. Originally released in November 1981 on Les Disques du Crepuscule, Hommages was recorded in Leicester in February 1981 and produced by noted Belgian new music composer Wim Mertens. The album was conceived as a series of diverse homage's to other composers, which include Bill Evans (My First Homage), Ferruccio Busoni and Gustav Holst (The English Mail-Coach and The Vespertine Park) and Percy Grainger (Hi-Tremolo). Featured musicians included Andrew Bilham, Ronald Reah, Andrew Renshaw, Nigel Shipway, Dave Smith, John White and Marie Wilson, as well as Gavin Bryars himself on piano and vibraphone. The album is the only one that documents the important period between Bryars' early experimental music and later works from Medea onwards, as well as his enthusiasm for small composer/performer ensembles. The new 63 minute digital remaster of Hommages now includes two bonus tracks composed and recorded by Bryars during the same period: Danse Dieppoise, and the lengthy piano piece Out of Zaleski's Gazebo. The booklet features extensive notes by Gavin Bryars on the origin and performance of all six pieces, and preserves the original album cover artwork by Marc Borgers.

Caned & Able
Smoke
PS, UK Since impressing far and wide with their Beats for Bars project Patrick Bird and Martyn Savigar have now expanded their range of collaborators to weird, wonderful and sometimes audacious effect. In the immediate vicinity, there's former Specimen and Siouxsie & the Banshees guitarist Jon Klein, drummer Chris Bell [also Specimen but a bevy of 80s giants too] and, showing up in the course of this hallucino-genic journey, Billie Holliday, Catatonia, Marc Bolan and even the young John Peel, whose unmistakable and always welcome tones talk about woodland creatures on 'Deaf Aid' amidst another calming space-shuffle before singer Anna Jacyszyn wafts in. The concept is mash-up taken to diverse extremes creating slow motion symphonies which plant some familiar voices in fields of dreams where the mood is deep, dubbed and drenched in ghosts as Billie Holliday looms in "Trav'lin' Light" to spine-melting effect, "Soul Clapp" creates a new hiphop hybrid, "White Space" is an orchestral treatment of goth-glamsters Specimen and there are tracks like "Deuteronomy" where the players stretch out after the guests have left. This is an opiated aural delight from start to finish, by which time you might be stroking the ceiling like a long-lost friend, satisfied that now the world's a better place and wondering why they don't make them like this any more.

Chevron
Tuff Shite
PS, GERMANY Chevron's intricate beats and party anthems get down and dirty with "Tuff Shite". Partly inspired by Chevron's hometown, and partly the result of his extensive live experience all throughout Europe, the six complex, crisp and tongue-in-cheek tracks presented here are also a lot more than just "tuff". Upbeat and clear, the A side displays (again, as if necessary) Chevron's talent for complex rhythms and catchy melodies. Flip the record, and the B side delivers the dancefloor-packing tracks, where jungle, hardcore and breakcore collide in a tasty and incisive way. Welcome to Blackpool, don't let the comets hit you on the way to the club.

Channeling the urgency of 80s Brit/shoegaze but with an updated sense of production values and texture, touching on influences such as Red House Painters, R.E.M., Echo and the Bunnymen and The Cure. Crow Tongue
Ghost Eye Seeker
PS, US Crow Tongue's first full length finds them summoning distant howls from the fog of night. Fingerpicked strings & Eastern instruments recall CT's musical heritage (the acid-folk of Stone Breath), but here they are layered with primitive homemade instruments, circuit-bent electronics & mantric drones. "Ghost Eye Gaze" opens the album with a 5-part drone-raga, improvised to back a shamanic chant, pushing from free-folk to free-noise & back again. "Seeker" follows in 2 parts with bass dulcimer & tablas leading into an electric swarmandal excursion. The album closes with "Candle, Corpse, and Bell" where Crow Tongue shows their dub influence with guimbri & tabla-machine slowly spinning through the echochamber.

Electric Pop Group
Sunrise EP
PS, US Brilliant Matinée debut from popular Swedish band The Electric Pop Group. The quartet astonished everyone late in 2006 with a self-released debut album that came out of nowhere to make numerous year-end lists and earn countless favorable reviews including comparisons to legendary bands on Creation Records (Razorcuts, Primal Scream, The Pastels, Jesus and Mary Chain) and Sarah Records (The Sea Urchins, Another Sunny Day, Brighter, and The Field Mice). As one of many indie record labels that took notice, Matinée made contact with them just as they started work on new recordings last summer and this EP is the first fruit of those sessions. Especially notable given the band's name, this EP also marks the addition of acoustic guitars to their repertoire. The EP kicks off with 'I Could See The Lights', an incredible tune and one of the first new songs the band recorded following the success of its debut album. Guitars jangle, drums pound, keyboards chime...the song simply shimmers and will serve as a perfect summertime anthem even in the face of less agreeable weather. It demanded to be released as a single so here it is! In addition to the lead track, the EP features three glorious additional songs: 'This Is The Town' is another chiming A-side, an infectious song that features prominent keyboards as the perfect counterpoint to three glistening guitar parts. 'Summer's Day' is a showcase for the newly added acoustic guitar, a fragile song that is similar to and every bit as poignant as the classic track 'For Always' by Razorcuts. Finally, 'Come And See Me' employs keyboards to great effect, creating a mesmerizing and soaring hit that is an especially lovely way to end the EP for sure. On this release, the band takes its sound-described by one esteemed music writer as "both studiously retrospective and thoroughly contemporary"-and expands it with added instrumentation and superb songwriting. The result is a modern indiepop classic and another sparkling addition to the Matinée discography.

PS, US Essential limited edition 180-gram vinyl release pressed in an edition of 500 copies. Eleh's pure analog drones are a perfect complement to Sun Circle's ecstatic high-volume compositions. Eleh's track is a slight departure from the sub-sonic bass-heavy drones of their first two records. This time around there is more emphasis on a glistening shimmer. Sun Circle's Important debut is psychoacoustic minimalism meets psychedelic maximalism: ecstatic high-volume drones, long-form trance musics & peace noise performed with bowed strings, voices, organs, percussion & world instruments.

His music has been called folk, blues, bluegrass, noise, and even (gasp!) new age. On this EP, Fahey uses heavy reverb, electric slide & feedback to create an eerie mood. The Mill Pond is all over the place stylistically, so it should confuse those who try to pigeonhole Fahey into any one category. It further proves that there is only one category into which he fits: truly innovative guitar genius.

Fleischmann & Tarwater
Morr Music Japan Tour EP [2005]
PS, GERMANY 2005 tour-only release, distributed in the U.S. for the first time, with Fleischmann providing two alternative versions of tracks and Tarwater providing three exclusive tracks. Anyone who has heard Fleischmann's The Humbucking Coil will already know "From To" and "Broken Monitors," but hearing them in these new-and-improved versions is a pleasure and a privilege -- the tracks are fleshed out with effects and distortion which makes them feel more fun and freer than their predecessors. Tarwater also don't disappoint, with their first offering "Cassedy" sounding like a 1950s slow dance as realized by the BBC Radiophonic workshop -- the EP's highlight and an incredible view of exactly what Morr Music is all about -- alternative and unusual pop music, pure and simple.

Flower Travelin' Band
Satori [re-issue]
PS, UK The Flower Travellin' Band's first musical outing, Challenge, was released in 1970 and was essentially a series of covers of Cream, Hendrix, Big Brother and Jefferson Airplane material. However, Satori appeared a year later and forever changed the way the group would be perceived, both in Japan and in the musical world at large. Possessing the vision to select Akira "Joe" Yamanaka as their vocalist, the Flower Travellin' boys elevated themselves above other Japanese bands of the time, whose efforts were largely confined to imitating British and American bands of the era. Satori, which was released in 1971, is a conceptual hard rock/psych album driven by Hideki Ishima's furious guitar licks which erupt and explode over the harmonic heart beat of the drums and bass and Yamanaka's banshee-like vocal style which was turning him into an occidental Iggy Pop or Robert Plant while the band itself was rapidly becoming Japan's answer to Led Zeppelin. Satori is a huge album in every way. From power chords to Eastern-tinged North African six-string freak-outs and crashing tom-toms, the band flexes its collective muscle from start to finish. In short, this is a real rock classic of the type they simply don't make any more.

Gerrard, Denny
Sinister Morning
PS, UK Denver Gerrard had his brief moment in the spotlight of stardom in British rock as one half of the Warm Sounds, the duo that he formed with Barry Husband in 1967. They hit number 27 on the U.K. charts with "Birds and Bees," a trippy psychedelic pop number released by Decca Records' Deram Records imprint... On his classic solo album from 1970 the four members of the cult underground rock band High Tide back him. A welcome reissue for a classic album that contains some of the most innovative music of the era!

Giles, Giles & Fripp
The Cheerful Insanity Of...
PS, UK This great album is where it all began for the King Crimson stalwarts. An excellent late 60's album which touches on psychedelic pop, (often compared to early Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd) with jazz influences and a whimsical brand of surreal humour. Fripps's guitar is on top form on Suite No. 1 and shows the shape of things to come when in 1969 when he and Mike Giles teamed up with Greg Lake and Ian McDonald to form King Crimson. This remastered reissue comes with bonus tracks and enhanced artwork and should appeal to all lovers of eccentric late 60 s Psychedelia and fans of King Crimson.

Hitchcock, Robyn
Shadow Cat
PS, UK Robyn Hitchcock has taken time out from working with The Venus 3 (which features various members of REM) and John Paul Jones (who has been busy with his former band Led Zeppelin lately...) to compile an exclusive album, Shadow Cat, for London's premier oddball label Sartorial Records. This collection of previously unreleased material from the Hitchcock vaults dates from 1993-99, providing the missing link between The Egyptians on A&M and the Warner Bros years. Shadow Cat itself features Moris Tepper, mainstay of Captain Beefheart's Magic Band, on lead acoustic guitar, and all tracks are Hitchcock originals, but for the Hendrix cover "The Wind Cries Mary" (on which Sartorial boss Terry Edwards plays Hammond organ). Aside from Edwards making a further appearance on "Never Have To See You Again", Robyn performs all instruments & vocals. From the concise opening cut, For Debbie Reynolds, to the concluding title track, the quality of the songwriting & performance shines through - "out-take" albums are all too often cobbled together from unreleased (unrealizable!) material. Not so here. These 14 tracks were whittled down from around 30 contenders, carefully edited & remastered to create a cohesive album - even to the point of sequencing the songs as two sides, despite it not being manufactured on vinyl. Essential for those who have followed Robyn from his early days in The Soft Boys (with Kimberley Rew, Morris Windsor and Andy Metcalfe) to his work with film director Jonathan Demme and beyond, this release also serves as a fine introduction to the work of one of Englands most treasured songwriters. Enjoy! Track listing SIDE 1: 1 For Debbie Reynolds, 2 Never Have To See You Again, 3 Love Affair, 4 The Wind Cries Mary, 5 High On Yourself, 6 Because You're Over, 7 The Cat Walks Her Kind Of Line. SIDE 2: 8 Statue With A Walkman, 9 The Green Boy, 10 Real Dot, 11 Nothing But Time, 12 Beautiful Shock, 13 Baby-Doll, 14 Shadow Cat.

Keef Hartley Band
The Time Is Near...
PS, UK Considered by many to be one of the finest exponents of powerful Jazz Rock, Keef's earliest engagement was as replacement for Ringo Starr in Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. He was also Mick Fleetwood s replacement in John Mayalls Blues-Breakers and featured on many recordings by the band. In 1968 he formed his own group recruiting the highly regarded Miller Anderson on guitar and vocals. Although they performed at Woodstock the band was not filmed. Latterly Hartley became involved with group Vinegar Joe and with singer / songwriter Michael Chapman.

Les Troubadours Du Roi Baudouin
Missa Luba
PS, UK Hailed by Stanley Kubrick as Absolutely, one of the great films, Lindsay Anderson s stylish, surrealistic, uncompromising and confrontational film IF... encapsulated the revolutionary atmosphere of the sixties; and four decades on has lost none of it's power to astonish and provoke. Malcolm McDowell (of whom IF... made a star), suggested the bewitching, other-worldly music of Sanctus from the Missa Luba, a version of the Latin Mass based on traditional Congolese songs, which establishes the film s very particular atmosphere. IF... captured the public's imagination beyond anyone's expectation and the memorable Sanctus subsequently became a chart hit (I couldn¹t believe it recalled McDowell). Les Troubadours du Roi Baudouin, a choir with percussion section consisting of about 45 boys from 9 to 14 years old, and 15 teachers were formed by Father Haazen. The Missa Luba is pure Congolese. It is completely void of any modern, western musical influences. None of it is written. Certain rhythms, harmonies and embellishments are spontaneous improvisations. This edition, comprising the mass and native songs of the Congo, is the first complete restoration of the original album first released in 1963.

Swaddling Songs
PS, UK Featuring girl singers Clodagh Simonds and Alison Williams, Mellow Candle never achieved commercial success they deserved spawning a legendary psychedelic folk-rock album akin to Fairport Convention or Fotheringay. Touring to support Thin Lizzy (Simonds played on Lizzy s album Shades of a Blue Orphanage ) and Horslips, the band had a short lived existence. Clodagh Simonds later went on to play again with Mike Oldfield and Jade Warrior and this release serves as evidence of the talents of both Simonds and the band who deserved far more commercial success than they attained. Farewell Mr. Happy
PS, SWEDEN With their last album, Man Overboard, still in regular rotation we welcome with open arms these Swedish electro-pop mavens' new recordings. Farewell Mr. Happy is yet another beautiful and bizarre collection of uncompromising looped and sampled dark-dreamery, comparable to The Knife and Bjork, with a sinister Phil Spector vibe. Their sonic habitat remains a sleepy, hyper-sensual sonic otherworld, but the edges here aren't softened at all, in fact the opposite is true. The new songs are dangerously serrated and sprinkled with oldchool industrial flourishes, but of course it's Anja Bigrell and Marie Eklund's woozy and winsome vocal aerobatics that stir the spirits and tug purposefully at the heartstrings. Highly recommended.

Morrison, Van
Keep It Simple
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "This is lived-in, soulful music, the kind that can only be made after years of playing the classics, and if that doesn't quite make for a compelling album, it does make for a comforting one. It's as easy to slip into this album as it is a warm bath, as Van's cantankerous rumblings only surface (quite slyly) on the closing "Behind the Ritual," where he scats "blah blah blah" on the corner, suggesting that whatever he's singing doesn't really matter -- and, in a way, he may be right, as the lyrics, the songs even, don't matter as much as the overall sound on Keep It Simple, which is as pure a groove album as he's ever made. There are no surprises, but when you do something this well, there doesn't need to be."

Long Dark Twenties
PS, US An unusual turn for Nadja, which culminated via a chance meeting of Aidan Baker and Jon AD of Anthem in NYC, This recording (on a single sided 7") demonstrates Nadja's ability to fuse their sound to the construct of the Pop cover, with the cover in question being "Long Dark Twenties", which was written by Paul Bellini of The Kids In The Hall, and was first widely heard in their film Brain Candy! In doing so, Nadja displays traits rarely exhibited in their music, like full vocals, drumming, even the good old classic pop chorus, all in such a remarkable way this it shows all that the possibilities for reinvention with this group are far from exhausted. "Long Dark Twenties" is presented as a one sided 7" with hand letter pressed covers (both inside and out) and will be available in a multitude of vinyl colors.

Nelson, Willie
One Hell of a Ride [retrospective boxset]
PS, US Four CDs spanning the gent's entire career, so far, from the mid-1950s to 2007. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "this is the first box to ever attempt a thorough overview of his career, beginning with his earliest singles for Sarg and D, running through the countrypolitan Nashville productions of his Liberty Records and his wonderfully rambling RCA recordings of the '60s, then settling into the star-making sides for Columbia in the '70s and '80s, yet the set doesn't end there, as it runs through his albums for Island and Mercury in the '90s and 2000s. For sheer scope, this beats all, but what makes One Hell of a Ride so useful is that it covers all the ground accurately, picking a blend of hits, concert staples, and relative obscurities to present a career overview that may be illuminating even for serious fans, as this tells a full, complete story with its 100 tracks."

Northern Portrait
The Fallen Aristocracy EP
PS, US Magnificent debut release from new Danish trio Northern Portrait who are ready to take the world by storm with one of the strongest singles released by Matinée to date! The release has all the makings of a modern pop classic and, according to somebody in the know, will "shake the indiepop world to its very foundations." The band lists indie legends The Smiths, Echo and the Bunnymen, and The Housemartins among its influences and they certainly should appeal to fans of these and other classic pop groups plus contemporary favorites like Math and Physics Club too. Lead track 'Crazy' is the one that got the band noticed when it appeared on a newly christened Myspace page late last summer. Written and recorded in a four-hour time frame that marked the beginning of Northern Portrait, the song was completed intuitively with absolutely nothing prepared until guitars plugged in. A mix of acoustic and electric Rickenbackers, the guitars jangle in all the right places recalling Smiths classics like 'This Charming Man', and the vocals fit the music perfectly. It's a hit! 'A Quiet Night In Copenhagen' is the first of three additional tracks on the EP and sets the bar pretty high with more jangling guitars, nice tempo changes and other instrumentation. Short and to the point, the song is a fairly universal tale of a kind of voluntary outsiderism. 'Waiting For A Chance' is a bit slower and recalls the brightness of The Trash Can Sinatras or The Sundays if they had a male singer. The song features more of the characteristic Northern Portrait guitar sounds plus some nice keyboards. Final track 'The Fallen Aristocracy' is an ode to all romantics-bittersweet, but definitely more sweet than bitter. Using glockenspiel in addition to guitars, the song bounces along nicely and just might make the case of saving the strongest track for last. This debut demonstrates amazing promise for a new band and leads one to wonder if the b-sides are this good just what does Northern Portrait have in store for its debut album?

Powell, Baden & Vinicius De Moraes
Os Afro-Sambas / A Vontade
PS, UK Vinicius de Moraes was the principal lyricist of Bossa Nova, (Girl from Ipanema, Chega de Saudade and Insensatez are amongst the famous international hit songs he wrote with Tom Jobim), and Os Afro-Sambas is his response to the commercialization of the movement by the mid-sixties. Co-written with the brilliant Brazilian guitarist Baden Powell and eventually released in 1966, these eight songs combine Powell's melodic gifts with Bahian folk traditions and Gregorian chant. With the joyous vocalizations of Quarteto Em Cy, the atmosphere is at once haunting and spontaneous. The music hasn't even begun to date. Recorded at a time when musicians around the world were looking to break down barriers - between classical and pop, East and West - but the Afro-sambas appear to recognize no such barriers in the first place. Os Afro-Sambas is an absolute stunner. One of the most exquisite pieces of Brazilian music ever recorded, it is combined on this edition with the intimate, irresistible, A Vontade, Baden's most successful solo LP of the period and one of his finest achievements.

Quarter After, The
Changes Near
PS, US New album from psych-pop kingpins. As his swollen list of credits attests, Rob's skills as a producer are unsurpassed. The bright, harmonized, richly dynamic sheen on this record is not a parody of groundbreaking '60s sound, but a shining example of it still vibrating in the 21st century."

PS, US Incredible new album. With a sound that has matured from adorable to drop-dead gorgeous in the space of time between releases The Second Band's new album, The Definite Form, is more epic, more anthemic and more assured than ever, an orchestral-pop gem that will be in my Top 10 for 2008. The Orebo, Sweden combo's soulful brass-driven euphoria is still evident, but this time out, older and wiser, it's tempered with a feeling of heartbreak and melancholy that is sweetly Swedish. Fans of The Beautiful South (arrangements), Headlights (sweetness), Bright Eyes (earnestness), Okkervil River (rustic charm) and Shout Out Louds (a manic melancholia) will find plenty to swoon to here.

PS, CANADA The band's first release in 3 years finds them louder and looser with crackling guitar crescendos, dive-bombing swirls of strings, rasps wails and group vocal passages that are posititively spine-tingling. On 13 Blues For Thirteen Moons, riffs are the backbone more than ever. Anchored by new drummer Eric Craven (ex-Hangedup), the band works its slow build and burn with newfound patience, sinuousness and ferocity. Whether methodically framing walls of sound over the four-on-the floor punk dirge of '1,000,000 Died To Make This Sound' or exploding in sheets of free noise and melody on 'Black Waters Blowed,' the band has never rocked harder and has never sounded more determined, desperate and driven.

Stars In Coma
You're Still Frozen in Time
PS, SWEDEN André Brorsson is Stars In Coma, hailing from Skåne in South West Sweden, he's been putting out albums and EP's on small labels for the last few years. The new CD album "You're Still Frozen in Time" was recorded during the rainy summer of 2007 and it's a compilation of songs, some old, some new, that represents the perfect introduction to the man and his pop music. Stars In Coma sounds a bit like the sonic swirl of Felt, the off-kilter melody of The Pastels, the pure pop of fellow Swedes Celestial and also like... well, nothing else really. A one off! There are so many fine bands emerging from Sweden at the moment, but Stars In Coma are out there, occupying their own musical niche, creating their own sound. The first thing that hits you are the melodies, there's fragility and beauty to these songs. Stars In Coma present a C86 aspect to the finely crafted pop tunes, but that's not the limit of their musical style. Check the near glam rock swagger of "Radio", complete with the echo of hand claps, and the synth driven rhythms of "Transformation" as evidence of the musical versatility on show. Lyrically, there's a lot to be engage your ears too. From the pent up pop-rant at the apathetic masses on "People Put Up With a Lot Of Shit" to a lament on his own tortured indiepop genius on "Radio", André's words compliment the music perfectly. Listen too, to the explosively catchy melody of "Invisibility Trick" and the lovelorn melancholy of "I Wish Someone Would Dance With Me", and wipe away a tear or two. The story so far then, but more importantly, a sign of things to come! Fall in love with these pop gems before everyone else does. Gigs in England, Denmark and Italy as well as his homeland are signs of people catching on and of a brilliant future for Stars In Coma." --David Kendrick, Popklubb Fanzine.

Stevens, Meic
Gwymon [re-issue]
PS, UK When his classic Outlander LP failed to break through in 1970, Welsh singer-songwriter Meic Stevens' major label days were over. Gwymon ("Seaweed"), his legendary second LP, was recorded on his own terms in London in the summer of 1972, and highlights his pop sensibilities, with folk and blues influences also to the fore. It was only released in Wales in a tiny pressing, and has barely been heard since. Shortly after its recording, Meic moved to France, where he spent much of the rest of the decade in exile. The album makes its long-awaited CD debut here, complete with two bonus tracks, a detailed booklet featuring rare photos and an introduction from the man himself, making it an essential purchase for all fans of psychedelic singer-songwriting.

April
PS, US 11 songs at almost 74 minutes. In the spirit of "Ghosts" & "Tiny Cities", Mark was joined by the same players as before, including drummer Anthony Koutsos (Red House Painters), bassist Geoff Stanfield (Black Lab), violist Michi Aceret, & percussionist David Revelli. This also finds Mark in the company of guest vocalists Bonnie Prince Billy, Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie), & Eric Pollard (Retribution Gospel Choir). 7x7 SAN FRANCISCO: "From the sweet finger plucking of "Harper Road," a song that pays homage to his girlfriend's mom's battle with cancer, to "Tonight in Bilbao," a mesmerizing mediation on homesickness that cradles you with lulling drums, April is overflowing with acoustic introspection. "I had to get some perspective on some heavy things," Kozelek says. That perspective finds expression in ballads recalling Gordon Lightfoot and melodic jams reminiscent of Jeff Buckley."

Uncut
#132 (May 2008) [Magazine + CD]
PS, UK Editor's Letter: What I most wanted to talk to Robert Plant about when I met him last August was Raising Sand, the album of what he called "dark, sexy Americana" he'd recorded in Nashville with bluegrass singer Alison Krauss and producer T Bone Burnett. That album was unlike anything Plant had done previously and seemed to me the best thing he'd put his name to in the long years since the demise of Led Zeppelin.

Of course, by the time we meet again in Birmingham five days later to talk in more detail about the album, there's something else looming. Plant, not wanting to be misleading or evasive, eventually confirms in confidence that, yes, Led Zeppelin would be reforming, for one show, at London's O2 Arena.

The eventual official announcement provokes an incredible reaction, an absolute frenzy for tickets. The gig itself - delayed once, by an injury to Jimmy Page - turns out to be by general consent a triumph. Surely, it was argued, the taste they'd had of being Zeppelin again would prove irresistible to everyone involved, including Plant, whatever his commitments to a tour with Krauss and T Bone.

Ever since, the speculation about what they might do next has continued, as they say, unabated. Will they tour? Make a new album? What had it been like for them, back together at the O2, and what would it take for them to do it again? In this month's exclusive Uncut cover story, you can find out what Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones have to say about the reunion, each other, what it was like to be Led Zeppelin again and where they go from here. It starts on page 36.

Under Byen
Siamesisk EP
PS, US Live recordings, a collaboration between Danish art-rockers Under Byen and the renowned chamber orchestra Danish Radio Sinfonietta (a 42-piece classical orchestra). It swells with an icy sensuality, evoking the majestic Nordic glacial terrain and the gothic tales of Hans Christian Andersen. A carefully crafted audio expansion of Under Byen's distinctive theatricality. Pretty as a music box and grandiose as a full-scale symphony, Siamesisk successfully and intriguingly echoes the ancient ebb and flow of the sea against the Danish coast. The art-rock band Under Byen (Danish for 'under the city') broke the music world open with 2006's North American release of its album Samme Stof Som Stof. 5 tracks.

Voice of the Seven Woods
S-T [expanded]
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Following a lengthy string of 7" singles and EPs that have been finding an ever-increasing audience as the psychedelic folk revival gains steam, Voice of the Seven Woods finally made their full-length debut with this self-titled album, which singer, guitarist, and sole permanent member Ricky Tomlinson claims is the culmination of the project. It's a true shame if this album is indeed the last Voice of the Seven Woods release, because this is among the finest releases so far in the whole style. Far too many of Tomlinson's compatriots think it's enough to cop some ideas from an old Incredible String Band album and leave it at that, but the list of influences here cannot be so easily summarized. Like Davy Graham or Pentangle, Tomlinson is well-versed in jazz, blues, country, and certain world music styles; for example, one of the album's many high points, the ripping "Second Transition," features a wild and woolly solo on the electric saz, a modern updating of a traditional Middle Eastern instrument that was last used this effectively on a rock record on the Cedars' 1967 freakbeat classic "For Your Information." Most crucially, Voice of the Seven Woods simply rocks much harder than, say, Devendra Banhart, with a heavy psych-pop vibe in the manner of the Bevis Frond: the genuinely trippy "Underwater Journey" could be placed intact on a Rubble-like compilation of unknown psychedelic-era jams with no one the wiser, and the epic "Return from Byzantium" has the hypnotic pulse of vintage Can. At just over six-and-a-half minutes, that last song is twice the length of all but two others (the opening solo acoustic reverie "Sand and Flames" and the Nick Drake-style ballad "Silver Morning Branches"), and that sense of concision is vitally important to this album's effect as well. Psychedelic doesn't have to mean endless, after all."

Wild Swans, The
Space Flower [re-issue]
PS, US The Wild Swans' follows XTC (masquerading as the Dukes of Stratosphear) and the Damned into the more pop-oriented side of the '60s: the sort of area that could produce a three-minute single and a ten-minute hallucinogenic mind-blower. Pink Floyd got to be quite masterful at this aspect of things with Syd Barrett; the Moody Blues, too, used to be able to do this to a degree. Typically, the Wild Swans, with a somewhat softer sound than they've had previously, have followed in this rather English area, twenty-some years down the line. What you get for your money is a rather catchy collection of hook-driven numbers...not to mention the royally absorbing "Sea of Tranquility," a track that ticks along on a rolling bassline, dispenses with vocals along the way, and proceeds to play sonic games that suck you in and make you wish it could have gone on lots longer than ten minutes. One of the factors in the Swans' favor is certainly an endearing simplicity. Where their songs have often been complex sonic tapestries, Space Flower shucks off the complexities in favor of a very '60s production... It's great fun, very catchy, and probably great for parties."

22 Pistepirkko
(Well You Know) Stuff Is Like We Yeah! [regular version] (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 22ND)
PS, FINLAND New 2008 album from Finnish psych-pop phenoms! The fab three, back with guitar-based spaced-out bohemian blues-rock and proto-garage-psychedelia, produced by Kramer (Galaxie 500, Daniel Johnston, Ween, Bongwater). Recorded in just 10 days at the band's own Altai studios 22-Pistepirkko step forward with their idea of impressive simplicity, lively trio-playing and good melodies. After periods of heavy experiments in electronic production work, their current concept of keeping things simple was already their approach for the Drops+Kicks (2005) album sessions. Now, with the new album one can hear it in full bloom. P-K Keränen's vocals and guitar playing have gathered depth that one doesn't hear too often. Additionally, drummer Espe Haverinen simplified his playing to a great effect and sings more touching songs then on any other album. Asko Keränen's sonic bass, weird organs and effects add a room with a view, so specific 22pp and just right for producer Kramer to play with those bits and pieces in a most gentle and subtle way. Chris Bailey of The Saints heard it and wrote: "From the first bars of the opening track you know you are in for a treat, this record is MAGIC. Each song has its own personality and reference point which should defy inclusion on the same album yet all combine to create an astonishing journey through all that is glorious about pop music. ...a stupendous piece of work!"
